Los Angeles CFUG reforming - for real

2006-02-03 Thread Cary Gordon
I have, in a moment of enthusiastic madness, taken on reestablishing the Los
Angeles CFUG, formerly part of SCFUG. If you would be interested in
presenting at a meeting in the next few months, please let me know. There
will be no charge for membership or attendance, although we will try to have
a low cost food option, if folks want it.

Meeting day is not set, but will probably be Tuesday or Wednesday evenings
at 6:30 PMI am currently looking for a meeting place, most likely on the
West side of Los Angeles.

Please contact me off list is you can provide:

A meeting place;
A speaker (such as yourself); and/or
You are with an organization that would be interested in
underwriting
the group, which would not be very expensive, as most fixed
expenses like the Web site, etc. are already covered.

The site should be up later this week.

Thanks!

You might want to look at HSQLDB <http://hsqldb.org/web/hsqlFeatures.html>.
It is all Java, lightweight and has a nice feature set. It also has a
version that runs in memory, which is kind of interesting.

RE: LDAP

2005-03-15 Thread Cary Gordon
We use OpenLDAP because it meets our clients first requirement - it is free.
The downside, for LDAP beginners, is that it is not particularly user
friendly, meaning that, if you aren't an LDAP expert, and you don't know
precisely how your organization needs to be structured, you will do it
wrong. Hopefully, by the third redo, you will have it right.

I used to use the Netscape (now Sun ONE) directory server, which was much
easier, but is now (post Netscape) frighteningly expensive at about
$1.25/user for large, no cash organizations. My client has about 100k users,
and budgets about $0.005 per, which allows for a hefty linux box and a small
stack of LDAP books.

BTW, add me to the list of happy Softerra LDAPBrowser users.

RE: backing up SQL Server DB across the network

2004-11-01 Thread Cary Gordon
This is common, if not universal when backing up DBs from a maintenance plan
across the network. There are two choices to make this more reliable. Do
your maintenance plan backup locally, then either use backup software to
write it to the NAS (you don't need hot DB backup add-ons), or open the
backup folder on the DB machine to the NAS - read only is fine - and pull it
onto the NAS with a script.

You can set your maintenance plan to limit the number of days of backup that
it holds in the target folder, so there is no added human intervention
needed.

I have a NAS unit and am trying to use it to backup SQL Server DB at night.
I'm using a UNC path as part of the maintenance plan. The problem is it
seems I can not complete a backup. The backups always fail with this error
message:

BackupDiskFile::RequestDurableMedia:  faulre on backup device
"\\powervault\backup_1\sqldata\". Operating system error 64 (The specified
network name is no longer available.).

The error only occurs when the database is backed up, the transaction logs
are backed up to the same UNC path with no problem.

Is it not advisable or even possible to do backups like this?

RE: Drop-Ship Limitations to California

2004-10-19 Thread Cary Gordon
This hold true for every state that charges sales tax. If you are in CA and
hsve one local warehouse that you ship from, it is dead simple: You charge
tax in CA and no tax anywhere else.

The mail order computer stuff companies have a more complicated situation.
They have limited warehousing on their own. Almost everything is dropped
shipped from distributors like Ingram Micro, Tech Data, etc., and those
folks have warehouses everywhere. The big vendors are connected to the
distributors extranets, but even that does not guarantee that they have
current stock info, so if they sell you a framitz that is in IM's PA
warehouse, and it turns out to only be available in CA, they (and you) have
a problem.

I went through a huge argument with a company in Denver who sold me a
product that was supposedly coming from the manufacturer in Tennessee. They
found out after the fact that it had shipped for CA and hit my credit card
for the tax. I wound up in a heated conversation with the president of the
company, and, finally, they took it off.

This is SOT but it may affect anyone writing programs to do ecommerce with
customers in California.

I was recently told by a pcConnection representative that they could only
drop-ship items to California from pcConnection warehouses in Ohio and
Tennessee -- because of California tax laws.

Anyone ever heard of this?

In my case it has caused a 2 1/2 month delay in receiving an item I ordered
on Aug 2 that was in stock (but apparently not in the correct warehouse).

RE: OT - NAS storage device and SQL Database

2004-09-01 Thread Cary Gordon
The odds are that this would seriously suck. Your only chance would be to
create a separate network just for this connection, and that would have to
be something like gig fiber using NICs with onboard processing - sort of a
discount SAN.

I tried writing a backup file to a NAS using a DB maintenance plan over a
private gig copper net using standard NICs and it generated lots of errors.
I wound up writing it directly to the DB server and sucking it onto the NAS
with a (more forgiving) backup program.

You could always install your db server on the NAS - the Dell NAS OS is W2k.

3) They are in Moscow and the address given for "Anastaia Velikopolskaya",

Re: blackstone talk at CFUN

You are describing two related Netscape technologies: LiveScript became
_javascript_, and Netscape built an early push system based on its
server-side _javascript_/LiveScript technology.

I was working - with little to show for it - with the Netscape SuiteSpot
server-side technology when I heard about CF.  I saw a demo of 1.5, then
ran out and got a copy of the newly minted 2.0.  I completed the project
that I had been working on for two months in two weeks, and the rest, as
they say, is history.

Now, I could do it with CFMX and Dreamweaver in about two hours or less.

Re: Backup SQL Server Users

2004-06-08 Thread Cary Gordon
I agree.  We have a variety of otherwise pretty good backup software
available - Retrospect and BrightStor.  They seem to do backup okay.  It is
only the restore that never seems to work.

We dump everything to a file via a maintenance plan and back that up.

Caveat:  If you are doing big league ecom and need to backup 12 times a day
(literally), you need to use software like Retrospect and BrightStor with
their respective SQL server agents, otherwise you will take too much of a
performance hit.

I suggest that you move your dns to an easy to use, free service like

We do it the old fashioned way - BIND on Linux, but there is no need for
you to get that involved if it is not needed in you business.

If you do want to learn the nitty gritty, get Cricket Liu's DNS & BIND from

RE: OT-Firewall

We recommend Cisco and Sonicwall. For most applications, the SonicWall will
do everything needed and it is has a great administrative interface.

The Cisco PIX is more flexible, but it needs a lot of attention and an
expensive Cisco maintenance contract so you have something to attend to it
with.  You can run one of these without going to Cisco's PIX school, but I
don't recommend it.

We do sell these, as well.

RE: CGURU Install Help Needed

2003-08-25 Thread Cary Gordon
My advice for installing or uninstalling anything on W2K is to close every
application and stop any service that will permit you to stop it without
taking down the machine.

Generally these are: Event Viewer, Plug and Play, Remote Procedure Call
(RPC),Security Accounts Manager, and Windows Management Instrumentation
Driver Extensions. There may be others, depending on your installation.

If any of the CF services will not stop, first try opening the Task Manager
and stopping their processes. If that does not work, you can either
restart the server in the protected mode and disable the services and
restart, or you can go to www.sysinternals.com and download pstools. Then
you can use pskill to stop anything you like.

Good luck,

Re: ColdFusion on Linux

2003-07-29 Thread Cary Gordon
CF for Linux does not include an Access ODBC driver. Access is different
from database servers like MySQL or MS SQL. The .mdb file is basically
just a data file. The Windows Access ODBC driver uses the MSJet database
engine (we won't muddy this with MSDE) to become, in effect, the database
server.

AFAIK, there is nothing with similar functionality available on other
platforms.

There is a company called Intelligent Converters
<http://www.convert-in.com> that makes utilities to convert from Access to
MySQL and back again. You should check them out.

The encryption is performed on submission, so the form does not have to be

It would be much easier to do this with ssl certificates. You wouldn't
need commercial certs for this. With IIS, you can generate both a server

Re: Starting CF with cfstart.bat - Can you assign an account?

2003-01-31 Thread Cary Gordon
No.

The cfstart.bat file just scripts the "net start" command, and that command
only accepts one parameter: service name.

The service runs under whatever user name it was set up to run under in the
services control panel.

This is, however, not to say that what you want cannot be done. All it
would take is a script or program that:

stops the service, if it is running
runs a registry script to change the user name

starts the service

RE: WWWOT certification experiences/plans?

2003-01-07 Thread Cary Gordon
Okay, I have to tell my story...

CERTIFICATION MADE MY BUSINESS!

Really.

This is how it happened. I had started to work full time as a consultant
programmer, when a client told me that her shop was looking for a
Technology Director (CIO). I polished my CV and applied. I seemed to be a
good fit for the job. I had a nice interview with their search committee.

I didn't get the job.

It went to a guy with an MSCE.

Flash forward 16 months. I have 2 1/2 employees and am doing great. I get
a call from my client.

Bob the MSCE, who BTW had zero interest in computers, but wanted an easy
job, is leaving because the work is too hard. He has accomplished not one
goal during his tenure and his major project, which was one month from
going live when he was hired, is still at square one.

Typical Bob story: Being a "hands on" kinda guy, he installed 9 servers in
his office. Fortunately, it was close to the electrical panel. The only
rub was that he couldn't get the temperature below 102 degrees.

Anyway, they want to know if I am still available. When I stop laughing, I
reply that, no, I am not available as an employee, but we will take the
project on as a contractor.

I GIVE THANKS DAILY TO THE GODS OF CERTIFICATION!

RE: mySQL & CF

CFQueryParam gives you an easy way to validate the query params. Some
clever, bored hackers have figured out how to do things like pass a drop
table query through the header. It is an even easier exploit if you are
passing query parameters through the url string.

Of course, you are correct, and this is the key to my complaint, and to the
complaints proffered by many other developers.

MM is trying to fly by the seat of their marketing strategy rather than
cultivating developers - the folks that have to buy in for them to actually
make sales.

Re: eWeek Article about CF on Linux

2002-12-04 Thread Cary Gordon

One of the subtexts here is the utter bankruptcy of MM's approach to
application servers.

In order to productize CFMX for application servers, they have put the
relationship between CF and the Java App Server into a black box.

Why? To prevent users of the standard editions from getting some of the
"added functionaltiy" of the ColdFusion MX for J2EE packages for free.

Why? Because they can charge a hefty premium for the J2EE version.

Why? Because they assume that anyone running one of these servers has
money to burn.

This is the same approach that they take to CF on Solaris, which is only
available in an Enterprise version.

I have 9 Sun Fire VL100's deployed with Solaris 8. These machines each
cost about $1500 all up with the OS, Netscape One, etc. No way am I going
to spend $4,999 apiece - over nine times the cost of CF on Windows or Linux
- to run CF on these boxes. For $45,000, We are more than happy to learn
php...

The MM server line makes no sense to me. Who can explain the rational for
buying Flash Remoting MX for $1k when that functionality is built into CF
pro at $800 or JRun at $900?

I think that MM needs to simplify it's product line and unbundle all of the
features in CF Enterprise and CF for J2EE. If I need sandbox security or a
Type IV driver for Oracle, I will cheerfully pay for it. Just don't make
me pay for it on my appliance server...

I have found that the easiest way to test across browsers and operating

RE: Query of queries oddness

2002-07-16 Thread Cary Gordon

The code is correct. I did try your suggested changes though.

Apparently, the query of queries needs the original query identifier. You
can see this in the cfdump and also by outputting a query column list.

Query of queries oddness

2002-07-16 Thread Cary Gordon

I am having what I see as an anomalous issue with a query of queries. The
code and the results are below.

One of the queries is a cfdirectory listing.

cfdump'ing the query of queries ("qq") returns the correct data, but
outputting it does not.

Somehow, the cfoutput of the query of queries is returning the info from
the first row of the cfdirectory listing, rather than the row that matches
the test.

 SELECTfiles.fileName, users.UserName
 FROM files, users
 WHERE files.fileOwner = users.UserID

 SELECT getdir.name, getdir.size, getdir.datelastmodified,
q1.UserName
 FROM getdir, q1
 WHEREgetdir.name = q1.fileName

   #GETDIR.DATELASTMODIFIED#,#GETDIR.NAME#,#GETDIR.SIZE#,#Q1.USERNAME#

Slash-like CF app?

2002-07-12 Thread Cary Gordon

I am looking for a Slash (Slashdot Like Automated Storytelling Homepage)
type app. Briefly, Slash and its variants (PHPSlash, etc) allows the
posting of articles and their threaded discussion. It is like Forums, but
subtly different in that it is more magazine-like.

Re: SOT SSL

2002-07-09 Thread Cary Gordon

This was bound to happen with Thawte. Verisign's original strategy was to
keep the Thawte price low, but make them maor challenging to deal with. Now
they have almost doubled the price, bringing it to just above half of the
Verisign offering.

I think that the low priced offering from Equifax
has taken the regulatory pressure off of
them to keep their price down.

OT: Solaris (was RE: Ebay API Implementation with CF (http/xml))

2002-05-10 Thread Cary Gordon

I think that the truly outstanding features of Solaris are its
administration and its patch "cluster" delivery system.

I am not the worlds most experienced Solais admin, but, as our servers to
not run graphical interfaces, I am used to working from the command
line. There is a certain wonderful simplicity to using text based
configuration files and shell scripts for basic system management.

On the other hand, for all of the Solaris admin books out there, there are
few good ones (forget Janice Winsor). If you need one, try UNIX System
Administration Handbook 3rd Ed by Evi Nemeth (0130206016).

Re: OT: Whats the Deal with XML?

2002-05-06 Thread Cary Gordon

The deal with XML is that it is a data-centric standard for moving any type
of information that can be text encoded, It is platform agnostic, meaning
that it is designed to deal with anything from a text pager to a mainframe.

XML is self-contained in that it points the receiving application to either
a DTD or to one or more XSL stylesheets that give that application the
information it needs to display, process, or store the encapsulated data.

Being text, XML can easily be moved by the existing HTTP and HTTPS protocols.

The point of XML is that it delivers a information in a way that does not
require a lot of human negotiation between the developers or users on each
side of the transaction as comma delimited text would.

RE: CF/Database Help

2002-03-29 Thread Cary Gordon

I am not Dave, but my company does a lot of work for the government and we
are always running into this scenario:

The client decided they needed a database back in '84, so "Joe" in the
phonics department (or whatever) picked up a book on Dbase 3 and wrote one.
The original had 3 tables with about 40 records in each.
Somewhere along the line, they moved to Foxpro, then to Informix (or SQL
Server or Sybase or who knows)
They now have 172 tables. The biggest has 622,000 records.
Normalization?
Documentation?
They live, as you might imagine, in abject terror, and, of course,
They need to be able to access the data in its current form so it will work
with the 300 or so reports that some consultant wrote in RR ReportWriter.

So, having learned many lessons, we insist (we can do this) that they allow
us to put the data in a reliable structure. Then we create queries to make
everything look the funky way that they like it.

The bottom line is that, as an insider, you may not have the clout to pull
this off by fiat, but once in a great while the voice of reason can be
heard over the din of the mob.

Re: SQL lisence headaches

2002-03-26 Thread Cary Gordon

That would be true were we running applications where stored procedures and
triggers are absolutely necessary. The reality for >most< of the world is
that, while they are useful, they are far from necessary.

For the others, we will keep our behemoth SQL 2k server plugged in for the
time being.

In the short term, we just put all our sp's back into CF. For the long
term, MySQL 4.1 will have stored procedures, nested subqueries and foreign
key constraints.

Re: MySQL Cold Fusion Question?

2002-02-14 Thread Cary Gordon

You can use Access as a front end to almost anything via ODBC. On the
machine with Access, create an ODBC connection to your foreign database -
this assumes that the database is accessible via the network. Then you can
either link to or import the foreign database, depending on your needs.

If the database is not accessible via the network, you are down to writing
a query to generate a delimited file and sneakering it to the Access machine.

Aha.

This sounds like Osprey #1. Take a look at
<http://www.activecomputer.com/>. As I said earlier, it is a front end, so
you should be able to have your way with the back end.

RE: request scope.

2002-01-31 Thread Cary Gordon

Every other language that I can think of (and I can think of plenty) that
use the term "global" regard items defined as by that term to be accessible
across the application.

Since, AFAIK, "global" is not defined in the CF language specification, I
think that it would be a good idea to accept the broader application of the
term if we are to use it with respect to CF.

It is not possible to fully address your question with the information

In general, unless you are nesting result sets, you want to loop through
the results using This result line is

Re: Disabling "back" button

2001-09-07 Thread Cary Gordon

Actually, I have found that the most effective way of doing this is to set
up an intermediary "launch" page which takes you to the target page,
passing any variables, etc. along the way.

In other words, the user starts on page a, follows a link to page b which
then moves everything along to page c. Every time the user hits the back
button from page c, they go back to b, which pushes them to page c again.

It is not unbeatable (you can use history), but it is quite effective. I
did not invent this, and I think that it is vaguely annoying when I
encounter it, but sometimes we have to do what we must.

Dodging page timeout

2001-08-24 Thread Cary Gordon

Is there any way in 4.5x to dodge the page timeout setting in the
administrator?

I keep it set to 30 seconds, which is plenty for normal activity.

The exception is one page which publishes about 150 discrete, complex html
pages. If it ever finished, it would take under 2 minutes. It isn't a
public page, and only needs to run every other week.

TIA,

Notable titles include: Adv anced Coldfusion 5: Application Development By
