Re: Stus-List Octopus on a Landfall 38

2016-09-07 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List
I can speak to this...although I have a 37, not a Landfall 38, the issues which
Fred addresses are the same; pinched stern and zero wiggle room below
decks...are the same; it was tough getting ours to fit and took several
attempts and placements before we finally settled on a location; on my boat the
octopus drive sits in the stern area, just aft of the quarter berth and on a
slant (I believe the technical term is cattywampus) which doesn't look like it
will match at all with the radial drive; but once adjusted, it does a marvelous
job and steers true! It's a lot of effort but with it not to have the
mechanism on the wheel.

Paul — regardless of tiller arm or radial drive (NOT quadrant — thanks, Chuck
Gilchrest! :^), the geometry of the drive to the rudder post is the same: you
need to mount the drive pin X inches from the center of the rudder post. So
the angle through which the drive has to rotate is the same. The biggest issue
with the Octopus drive on the Landfall 38 (besides the fact that there's no
room around the steering area) is the fact that the rod that Octopus uses as
the ram actually extends out past the mounting base when the drive is
retracted, which limits the mounting locations as the stern pinches in so much
on the LF38.

The 1212LAM12 (or the version with the remote pump, the 1212LAR12) would be my
choice, as well; I’ve been looking at this issue of below-deck drives for my
boat for years, and I really like the Octopus drives. I’ve sold several to
people on the list; I just haven’t gotten around to doing it myself. :^)

Anyway, the geometry is fine for the Octopus drive, if you can find the room,
along with a mechanically-inclined very small person with very long arms to do
the install…

Re: Stus-List Anchor test - recommended lunch hook/kedge?

2016-08-28 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

Dave, I use a danforth as my second anchor; 35 lb CQR as primary; last
Saturday I rode out a line of several squalls which came from 180 degrees
opposite of my primary anchor position, the danforth held through all of them;
while several boat, which had set only a bow anchor struggled and drug anchors;
we were in about 14 ft. of water with a mud bottom... so, the danforths do
work; although, if I were in sand or rock, I might want one of those
fortresses!

Quite a pair of testimonials... And some interesting replies.

Based on the replies here and much of what I've read online, there is little
point in having a danforth type when a larger and smaller rocna, delta or Bruce
type would cover both bower and kedge applications. What does surprise me is
the hype around the fortress, which many find troublesome or impossible to set
in certain conditions. (As I did) Will play around with mine a bit more, but
will certainly invest in something more consistently reliable.

Thanks. Dave.

Interesting. Two different boats do the same sailing trip, both of them from
Halifax. I wonder what they add to the drinking water in Halifax.

Btw. I think that the guys I know did it in a different (not C) boat and a
little bit bigger (30 or 31 ft.).

Hi Richard

Several years ago during haul out I noticed the board was not up all the way
and the fibreglass at the end was frayed. The crane director asked me what I
wanted to do. I had no choice but to place Persuasion in her cradle. As she
was set down on her keel you could hear the fibreglass crunch. From then on it
was jammed up. Probably low water and backing in and out on my slipped caused
the fibreglass damage and spreading on the board breaking the seal of the
filler.

I was going to mention Ken Hellewell but David beat me to it. You may be able
to identify the bow of a C 38 (not Landfall) on the cover of his book:
https://www.amazon.ca/Kens-Cruising-Yacht/dp/0972749225

I think it's a 38, anyway. That book has been on my wish list for a while.
We just sailed our 32 from Killarney to Penetang - not "offshore" but 21 hours
and no land in sight for some time. It's not a big deal, but it felt that way
to me and the lady. Boat has always proven tougher than us. We have no ego
about the sailing anymore and I'm not afraid to admit that I am a fair weather
sailor :)
We pick our weather. When you're crossing an ocean you don't really get that
luxury. We've made similar passages on Lake Ontario - the great lakes can be
really rough, but you get to pick your weather so it's avoidable, most of the
time. We have gotten caught out in some really scary stuff anyway and the boat
is always tougher than we are.

Perhaps you've seen the news about the flooding in south Louisiana. It's been
bad. Lots of folks flooded out. Lots of sad stories.

The water began to enter my neighborhood in Baton Rouge early yesterday
morning. The Admiral and I watched the water slowly rise in the street in
front of our house. It filled the street then crept over the sidewalk inching
its way toward the house. It stopped about 8 last night 20 inches below the
elevation of the house floor. We still have water in the street but it's
receding slowly. Others weren't so lucky.

Many of the Admiral's family and friends were flooded.

Roads are still closed. It will be days before many folks can return to their
homes to assess damage.

To make this sailing related, I keep Touche' sails in a commercial storage
nearby. The storage building is adjacent the bayou which backflowed into our
neighborhood. The Admiral and I went to the storage unit yesterday morning to
raise stuff off the floor. Touche's sails didn't get raised. I'll go visit
the storage later today. Hopefully it remained dry. Otherwise I'll be drying
sails all week and being grateful it's not clothes, furniture and belongings.

Thoughts and prayers to all affected.

Dave,

We added an all in one refrigeration unit to our 33-2, one of the best upgrades
yet! Used this unit
http://www.westmarine.com/buy/waeco-adler-barbour--coolmatic-cooling-conversion-kit--7895881

installed it on the cockpit side of the icebox, had to cut the cockpit bulkhead
also. The insulation was in good shape, and about 3" thick. Last weekend we
found ice in some of the water bottles after we left it turned a bit too far
down.

We also reworked the lid, as I got tired of it hitting me. I removed the hinges
on the back side, and hinged it in the middle so it folds onto its other half.
This also means we can remove completely to fill, empty or clean the icebox.

Hi All,
Seems the boat is never "done".I read a recent thread here on older
iceboxes and the benefit of improved insulation, and wonder about my '85.
As other work gets done, the ice box has moved up the project list a bit.

I replaced the gasket and the manual drain pump, and will need to tighten the
lid screws to address wear/lid wobble, (might need screw holes filled) and
replace the rusting and now detached wire basket/shelf inside. For sure the
small gap between the two lid sections could be sealed somehow, and I will cut
a closed-cell foam "blanket" to cover the top. This should help deal with the
gap as well as insulate a bit better. After that, the work gets more invasive
as the insulated (we hope) cavities are quite difficult to access.

Has anyone tackled a 33-2 ice box? I am wondering mostly about the amount of
insulation and whether it was installed effectively. Any thoughts or advice
would be much appreciated!

Re: Stus-List CNG tank refill, purchase or exchange in Canada OR the US

2016-06-23 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

Mike, I feel your pain! I have the CNG and I cannot even find a place that
will attempt to refill it, except for the place in Oregon; which would require
shipping the tank to them, having it filled and then having it shipped back to
menot a viable option for me... I have looked into converting and it is a
bout a $2000 project...
anyone else out there with any ideas? Thanks

Subject: Stus-List CNG tank refill, purchase or exchange in Canada

We discussed this three months ago and I have been working on it since. The
cooking fuel on our Frers 33 and on a friend’s Sabre 34 as well as a number of
other boats manufactured in the 1980s was Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). We
have a gas distributor in Nova Scotia (Heritage Gas) that supplies large CNG
bottles to commercial customers where they do not have pipes to supply natural
gas. They do not have a consumer refilling side.

I have found that since our boats were purchased in US (and built there) the
CNG canisters we have are DOT certified (which is US only) and not CTC so have
no Canadian certification. In order to have refilled they need to be certified
in Canada and then we need to find a place to have them refilled. One option
is to purchase new tanks the same way we do for propane.

The reason I am sticking with CNG and not converting to propane is that I do
not have a propane locker. CNG is lighter than air and does not require one.
My only option for Propane would be to hang a tank off the pushpit, modify the
gas lines to reach it and modify the oven to accept it. Refilling the tanks is
a much more attractive option.

I have purchased the boat CNG refill adaptor that Joe mentioned below. I also
have an idea where I may be able to refill a tank and I have managed to find
one Canadian certified tank. All of that was a three month long endeavor.

I then had an idea. Surely it is possible in Canada to purchase a new tank of
the correct specifications that is certified bot Canada and US. It must also
be possible to have this filled as a normal course of business thru one of our
regular gas and tank supply companies such as Praxair or Air Liquide. Does
anyone on this list have experience with where to purchase these tanks with the
appropriate valves and who would fill them? The alternative would be to drive
to the nearest place that exchanges these tanks which I believe is Camden
Maine. That is a 12 hour driove and involves transporting gas canisters over
an International border …

Thanks

The tanks is a modified SCUBA tank. 1100 PSI is about just under half full.
They are usually about 2200-2400 when topped off.
You need to go on FleaBay and look for an adapter to hook your tank up to the
CNG station to fill it. They hold about $4 worth of gas. Your other choice is
to find a marina that does CNG tank exchange for about $100!
Something like THIS is what you need:

Re: Stus-List Roller Furling Line

2016-06-21 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

I had not heard of it either, but the furling line for my boat had the core
removed for the part of the line which was wrapped around the drum...which is
most of the line...it took a bit getting used to the feel of it, but it works,
(which is the most important part)!

Randy, good job; I had a very similar incident here on the Ohio River about
three years ago when an over loaded runabout sank and we were the only boat
near; there were 6 people on this boat, two adults and four teenagers; no one
wearing life jackets, no one could swim and there are a ferocious current
running; my wife and I were on my C 29 and threw life jackets, boat cushions
and anything that would float at them, we rescued five of them and one adult
nod not make it; the rescue was made even more difficult because the teenager
only spoke Spanish,,,which I didn't!The Police and rescue gave my wife and
I a commendation award, but I am still haunted by not getting every one safely
on board...

Just a little story to share with you all.

Went out for a leisure sail Friday evening with my daughter her friend, in
Beaufort 4 or 5 conditions. We sailed under main only, and there was a 15"
whitecap chop on the water. Hardly any boats on the lake, but one windsurfer
really hauling ass.

Out in the middle of the lake, we heard some yelling, and looked around to see
three PFD-less people standing on a small low fiberglass fishing boat that was
going down by the stern. I barely had time to say "shit, they're sinking."
Next time I looked, the boat was gone, and the people were in the water amongst
various debris. There were no other boats in the vicinity and I realized we
were going to have to rescue them as quickly as we could.

Started my Atomic-4 without running the blower first, luffed my main, drove to
them, and threw out my life sling. Had to circle them three or four times
dragging the life sling line by them, before we could get them all pulled in
and aboard via the swim ladder. I missed on the first try or two just due to
the wind and water conditions and my main flogging. One of them was about 30
yards from the other two, who told me to get the lone guy first. By the time
we got the other two aboard, they'd been in the 68-degree water probably ten
minutes.

Dropped the main, drove to the marina, docked at the launch ramp, and called
911 for the first guy at the request of the second one. I think he was very
intoxicated or high on something. He was incoherent and unable to move his
body well, and it wasn't from exhaustion. Plus his friends told me to get him
first, so they must have known something.

Anyway, couple lessons learned. First, my life sling line was not already tied
off with the life sling in the bag. It should have been. Had to tell my
daughter's friend to tie it off before throwing it out. Second, in all the
chaos we forgot to give them blankets when we got them aboard. One went below
and my daughter gave them all towels, but they were all at least very cold if
not in the beginning stages of hypothermia. Third, don't expect the Chatfield
State Park rangers to respond to a mayday hail on VHF 16 - I hailed as soon as
I grasped what was happening, to no avail.

It was lucky that I was in the right place at the right time. There were no
other boats around. These three were too far in the middle of the lake to swim
to shore and I don't know if they could have given the conditions (including
theirs). And I'm glad we were able to get a line to them before having to
witness any of them drowning. Couldn't have done without my daughter and her
friend (both 22-ish) - that would have been too much for me to manage alone.

After we unloaded them, filed our statements, put the boat away, and drove
home, we toasted the good things in life with many dark & stormies and
whitecaps. I'd never seen anything like that before, and I hope I don't have
to again.

The point is that the engine and any gears in the transmission are not turning,
but the prop shaft will be rotating in the forward direction. So the clutch
plate that transmits power to the prop shaft will be turning, with very light
pressure between the drive plate and the clutch surface (which, IIRC, on a
Kanzaki is a double ended cone?). That leads to glazing of the drive and driven
plates, rapid clutch wear, and premature transmission rebuild.

Life would be even better if I was able to use my autohelm. I have purchased

it below deck. As all C owners know there is very little room at the best of
times and it appears that when they made the LF38, autohelm was never even a
consideration.

I was wondering if there are any other LF owners out there that have
successfully installed a linear below deck drive that would be willing to pass
on their installation process. Photos would also be appreciated.

Life is good on a boat, even when you are fixing her.

The rumors are true, the First (and hopefully annual!) International River City

Racing will be on Lake Ontario off Youngstown, so winds shouldn't be quite as

The format will include racing Saturday and Sunday, with awards thereafter. At
the Clubhouse, we will have drink specials all weekend, with live band and
party Saturday evening, open to all Club members.

A Continental breakfast will be offered on Saturday & Sunday mornings to get

Re: Stus-List Autopilot purchase and solar panel install

2016-04-20 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List
I can't for Fred, but I can speak for myselfI researched autopilot units
until I was blue in the face and initially decided to go with Fed because he
was on this listhowever, once I received all the parts and began assembly,
I came to rely upon Fred's advice an helpful suggestions to the point where I
don't think I could have done it without him...he took the time to listen to my
questions (posed in a not-so-clear fashion I'm sure)...and offered suggestions;
he was insightful about my particular boat because he has one (I have a 37,
Fred has a 38)...and he was able to discern when there was a real problem from
when I just wasn't understanding the written directions; so, if price is
the only object, then shop on...but if you want the unit to work, call Fred

I'll checked Hodges Marine just now - they are a little more than Defender.
As for Fred - he can jump in if I'm wrong but I've seen a few of his messages
where he said he couldn't beat the sales prices on similar items.

My only substantive comment on paint is to consider Awlcraft vs Awlgrip.
Particularly true if you're concerned about scratches. Awlcraft is easier to
repair and blend.

Touche' is Sunfast Red Awlcraft over 3 coats of high build primer. The
Awlcraft looks great!

Re: Stus-List Hull color inquiry

2016-03-28 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

Dave's post reminded me...I am going to be in a situation where most or all of
my hull may need repainting; (blemishes on hull from dock piling); so I began
looking at other boats for ideas; I have always been enamored with the dark
hulls, especially the Flag Blue ones like Dave Risch's boat; however, I have
been warned by the local "experts" that they are difficult to maintain and show
scratches way more than the lighter colors; also , that they are hotter in the
summer...; so my question to those of you with darker hulls...how much of the
above is true? Would you go back with a darker color if you had the chance?
Any other factors I am missing? Many thanks as always

Re: Stus-List Stus-CNG tank refills

2016-03-21 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

Anyone on the list who has a CNG system for the stove? My boat came from
Massachusetts and it uses CNG for the stove; I am in Kentucky on the Ohio River;
the gauge shows about 1100 (pounds?); the tank is about 2 1/2 ft long, maybe 8
inches in diameter? (guessing on these)
My questions are: is there any way to know what this represent in usable fuel
left in the tank? (or alternatively, how much fuel comes in a full tank?)

there are a couple of CNG stations for vehicles around here but no one has
heard of refilling a tank; any ideas? What do you guys up East do? I would be
willing to ship the tank via UPS if that's allowable...

Many thanks (and note I remembered to change the subject line!)

I got a Blue Sea socket and plug and wired the plug to the panel and mounted
the socket near my engine panel and ran that to a Sunsaver Duo controller in
the lazarette and from there up to the battery compartment. I just plug in the
panel before I leave the boat and unplug when I come back and store the panel
below deck while sailing. It sits on the companionway hatch cover while I am
gone. I got a 50W panel sized to fit on the hatch and it is heavy enough with
the aluminum frame that it does not blow away. Dave

Re: Stus-List Wooden Boat Article by Rob Mazza

2016-02-23 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

All, the March/April issue of Wooden Boat has a really nice article by Rob
Mazza about "Pipe Dream"; designed by George Cuthberson; Rob's description of
how the design came into being is fascinating and very helpful in understanding
how our boats came to be distinctive as "C"; Rob states that this boat was
designed in 1958, and it was/is intended as a wooden cruising boat, however,
when I saw the photograph I was stunned... while the cabin and deck are not the
typical C, the hull clearly sets the tone for the hull shape for all of our
boats! Rob, you did a great job on this article, and should do a follow up on
what happened, design wise, between Pipe Dream and the C production
designs...maybe a whole book? Fellow listers, get your hands on this article,
it is required reading for any C historian!

Re: Stus-List Soft shackle

2016-02-17 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

Dennis; could you please explain for me how a soft shackle doesn't get hung up
whereas a knot or other arrangement does? I have looked at these (but have not
used one), and have read all the articles about them in the mags... and I am
having conceptual difficulty with the fact that the soft shackles have knots
on them and could hang up just as much as a well tied jib sheet...or, what am I
missing? many thanks!

Re: Stus-List ; A Unit of Time book

2016-02-10 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

Sometime last fall, someone on this list mentioned a couple of books for
reading, one was Whynott's "A Unit of Water, A Unit of Time", which I purchased
and have just finished. I failed to note the name of the person who suggested
this book, but I wish to say thank you; what a great work!I knew nothing of
the Maine boat building world or of Joel White, but this book immerses one into
the middle of the boat yards and the wood shavings and the boat launchings...I
thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was astounded when I read that EB White, who
had written the "Elements of Style", a book I have used for 38 years in my
office, was the same person who had written of boats and whose son this book
was about...;

This is another, perhaps hidden joy of this list...in addition to boat repair
tips and product sourcing...one can be guided through the nautical literary
scene...so thank you again to the person who made the recommendation.

NB; I am now going to begin "Solo Around the Horn" by Hartjoy...

Re: Stus-List Diesel Heaters and installation

Dwight; like yours, my boat came with a Dickerson Newport model solid fuel
heater..although we don't get too many really cold night during the summer, and
the boat is winterized for winter, I still haven't had the nerve to fire it up
yet...but it looks very nice on the bulkhead! Any suggestions about getting
over the fear of lighting a fire in the middle of the cabin? And, if that
works, there's the matter of the CNG stove

I wonder if anyone is installing/using solid fuel cabin heaters
nowadays? Alianna came to me with a Cole stove mounted on the Port

good heat and it's sort of like having a little fireplace inside the

only use it a few times when living aboard on cool damp nights.

wouldn’t show the scratching from rocks and debris while tied to the beach.
Nearly any shop or amateur welder can fix aluminum, some prettier than others.
i would say the floor stays very cool in the water. Ours is naked aluminum,
and will stay that way. We power it with a 5 hp merc 2-stroke. Planes with

We carry it on davits.

sending in the hatch, waiting months, and paying more than a new hatch? Let's

Re: Stus-List Wheel replacement C mk3

2016-01-04 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

Chuck; my path down the "wheel envy road ended with the purchase of a 40 "
Lewmar folding wheel; I have had it on three different boats and I love it; I
will never go back to a conventional wheel...; I had to take it to a local
machine shop to get it to fit the steering hub; (the first boat was a C 29,
which had the Cinkel helm, and the others had Edson..); there were able to make
perfect fit...in fact, they had never been asked to work on something like this
and became as enthusiastic about it as I was! good luck!

Hello listers after a year's sabbatical from this list. My 35-3 has an Edson
36" six-spoke flat wheel with 1" straight hub. (maybe all are same)

Here's a confession: I have suffered from wheel envy, and recently purchased an
old 44" Yacht Specialties wheel on ebay. It has similar, but not quite, same
hub and keyway dimensions. The hole in the hub of the YS is a tiny fraction
smaller than Edson shaft. It will part-way fit, but the diameter of the hub
hole needs a shave.

Aside from just looking cool-er, (to me) I removed my 'camel hump' and sit to
the side of the helm and this refit will make steering really nice.

Anyone out there who might have switched wheels with any experience and/or
advice on who, where or how to get this a proper fit? (I have an idea and am
searching for machine shops but wonder if there are some who have done this)

Also...I might have a 36" Edson for sale if this works...

The section of sole under my nav table, where I put my feet, was just screwed
down to the interior liner. I pulled it up and cut a hole in the liner,
accessing an area big enough for tool storage so I can use the top drawer for
something else. It's far enough aft and high enough that any bilge water
doesn't find its way up there. I hinged the teak and holly to be a lid.

Re: Stus-List Anchor locker hinges; a historical perspective

2015-12-23 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

In following this thread, and for the new owners out thereI recommend
taking a look at the C photo album specs; for many of the models, it seems
that the early designs used the external "strap" hinges which the first poster
asked about; then somewhere in the late 1970s or early 1980s, C quit using
external hinges and began using the piano hinges, thus accounting for the
differences in the specs...this is easy to spot if you go to the old
advertisements for any model, (on the photo album)...there one can review the
photos and see whether the boat has strap hinges, or if no strap hinges are
showing, then presumably piano hinges;

In general, there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained from reviewing the old
ads; one can see the same ideas used in multiple designs, but tweaked or
adapted...its also your roadmap to why your boat sails as well as it does...the
emphasis is on performance, and then creature comforts..
I have often been amazed that the layout and interior designs for most all of
the models are traceable back to the first boats in the late 60s, early 70s...

...and a Merry and wonderful Christmas to all on the list!

Paul,

My 86 model has piano hinges everywhere on deck. Three cockpit lockers, the
lazarette, and the anchor locker are all stainless piano hinges. Mine have
loosened up over time and I have had to repair and tighten each of them.
Adding some epoxy filler really helps the small screws get a bite.

Re: Stus-List Lines led forward

2015-12-21 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

Dave; my 37 has four cabin top winches and they appear to be original; the
spec drawings show two winches and two more as optional equipment; then, of
course, there are places for up to four winches on the raised deck areas near
the mast, so I'm guessing that the original purchasers would have ordered what
arrangement they wanted;

Interesting thread. Put me in the move lines forward camp.

I’m generating schematics of new line and hardware layouts right now. And one
thing that I have been mulling over for quite some time is moving most, but not
all, of the halyards back to the mast. Or mast area as it may be. And one the
strategies is to go back to the original layout where the halyards came off the
base of the mast and went to dedicated winches mounted on the cabin top.

Right now I have two jib halyards, the main halyard, the spinnaker halyard,
mainsheet, 1st and 2nd reefing lines and port and starboard traveler controls.
And the there are miscellaneous lines forward that haven’t been accounted for
under the old layout; cunningham, vang adjustment, and a nifty light-duty
preventer line that leads from mid-boom through the boom and down to the mast
base. Oh, and pole downhaul and lift.

There is just too much line cluttering up the coach top and the sides of cabin
under the dodger.

I’ve been scouring the internets and found photos of J/40’s and J/44’s where
the lines splay out to winches and line collection bags. I’m liking that. And
the original deck layout for the 37’s clearly shows 4 winches. From the holes
that I have been filling the former layout included one winch on the port side.

Sam,
I purchased a 1985 35-III about three years ago, and one of the initial
upgrades was refrigeration. I wanted cold beer for my crew and I whenever we
were out sailing or at the dock talking over the days race. I installed a
Domestic CU-86 CoolMatic 80 Series Condensing Unit - Air Cooled, with a
Domestic VD-09 CoolMatic 80 Series Evaporating Unit. I liked the CU-86 unit
because it is smaller than most compressor units. It is designed so that it can
be mounted on a bulkhead (no need to fabricate a shelf). In the case of the 35,
it hangs on the bulkhead behind the ice box. Easy install. Nice and neat, out
of the way. It generates almost no heat, and I never hear it running. It seems
to be very efficient because I can sail all day 5-6 hrs running a complete set
of instruments, a sail comp unit, 2 GPS's, an inverter powered laptop, with the
refrigeration on two group 31 batteries with minimal battery loss. I'm in
Michigan and the summers are generally in the 80's. I have not added any
insulation to the box, and beer is always cold.

The unit was purchased online from Defender Marine. The CU-86 Condensing Unit
was $755.00, and the VD-09 Evaporating Unit was $260.00. If your interested I
can send you pictures of the installation.

I don't have any experience with the unit you referenced. I'm not sure how to
install that unit on a 35 III. With the unit I described, I can keep a bag of
ice cubs in the evaporator for cool drinks, which also makes the unit more
efficient. I would go with a DC system if it were me. Its always running,
always cold whether you are at the dock on shore power or out on the water.

Re: Stus-List small start battery for yanmar 3hmf

2015-12-01 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

This was recommended for a 2gmf yanmar:

"Shorai makes a nice, lightweight, Lithium-Iron motorcycle battery:
http://shoraipower.com/lfx18a1-bs12-p86
It starts my Harley easily and weighs about 2 pounds. It?s also smaller than
most motorcycle batteries. That's a lot of power in a small package."

My question: would this same battery work for a 3HMF, and would the charger
recommendation be the same? I like this idea a lot...!

Stupid me, I had my head stuck in the automotive world...
thanks for the suggestions. Cool little lithium batteries, and yes, would be
very easy to fit. Need to check charge profile compatibility with with my
shore power charger, but for a dedicated start battery that's not essential.
Josh - yes, have done my homework on the rest and purchased a blue sea acr/vsr
as well as their isolating/combining selector switch in panel, (nice, it has
24/7 breakers incorporated) plus a victron battery condition monitor. I have
the 55a alternator so should be ok, and House bank is two form 31 deep cycles.
Will revise the grounding to a proper buss as part of this. Big improvements
in functionality!

I knew I'd seen some cool options. Those looked pretty awesome! Small
enough to fit anywhere and powerful enough to start.

As discussed on this list before, an ACR or Xantrex Echo-charge is what

you should use to keep the start and house banks separate but allow the

alternator to charge both. A combine switch allows for emergency starting

with the house batteries. A very small lead acid battery is enough to turn

the engine. If you don't have enough room for a U-1 tractor battery then

you might find a motorcycle battery that will fit your needs. Even two 6v

motorcycle batteries might solve your space problem. There are some great

lithium options in motorcycle batteries too.

All, we completed the Pensacola - Havana Race on C 34+ Dejavu last
Thursday November 9th, crossing the finish at 9:36am. We sailed the entire
race, only running the engine to charge batteries. We had five total in the
crew and ran a helm schedule of two hours on the wheel with another crew keeping
them company. The plan was that each person leaving the cockpit would then have
a long break. One of our crew became seasick so we sailed most of race with 4
primary crew. Winds were mostly SE and fairly strong at 20 - 25 knts but one 24
hour period with 30+. We were double reefed most of the race and the boat
behaved well with little weather helm. Dodging freighters at night in the Gulf
of Mexico is part of the race and we had our share of those. AIS is really
helpful and better than radar for those situations. We were the smallest boat
in the race and took 3rd in Division and 3rd overall.

It was great to arrive
in Cuba and we had many experiences while there. It is a vibrant land with
friendly and curious people filled with unrealized dreams due to the controls
the Cuban government puts on its citizens.
On Saturday we participated on the
Havana Cup Race along with 20 other boats. Only one other boat pointed as high
as Dejavu and that was the J130. This gave us a big advantage against much
bigger boats but on our final tack toward to finish we messed up a maneuver so
we ended up 5th in that race. We are in Key West waiting for a weather window
to sail up to Tampa and then later back over to Pensacola.

Best to Everyone
on the List

All diesel is made to the same set of standards. The red stuff just has adye
in it to indicate that the highway fuel tax has not beenpaid.

When your engine was built, diesel fuel had 5000 parts per million ofSulphur
content. The Sulphur was a significant factor in lubricating theinjection pump,
injectors, etc.

In the mid to late 90s, in anticipation of the Tier 2 emissionsstandards, Low
Sulphur diesel became mandatory. Sulphur content wasreduced to 500 PPM, and
lubricity additives were incorporated in thefuel.

In the middle of the last decade, in anticipation of Tier 3 emissionstandards,
Ultra Low Sulphur diesel became mandatory. Sulphur content oncurrent fuel is 15
PPM. A new Tier 3 engine is designed to run on ULSfuel, just like a new gas
engine is designed for ethanol.

Yanmar, Cummins, and Perkins (the 3 brands of diesels I used to
teachtechnicians about) all recommend that you add a lubricity additive toyour
fuel if your engine was built before Tier 3 and ULS diesel becamethe norm. For
our size engines that means about 2010 (1 year later inCanada). The service
bulletins from Yanmar and Cummins (which Iunfortunately lost when the laptop’s
hard drive went up in smoke) bothspecifically recommend the additive from
Stanadyne.

Even though my Universal M35B is a Tier 3 version, I still add
Standynelubricity additive (although I do occasional use a product from
Lucas).It can’t hurt.

I also put BioBor JR in the fuel as an algaecide and try to keep my tankfull
during winter storage. As Josh said, the nasties live in the waterin the tank
and eat the diesel (don’t get me started on bio-diesel). Analgaecide and
reducing the chances of condensation in the tank are goodpolicy for avoiding
fuel filter problems.

I’ve used about 2 tanks of fuel this year, so I’m not concerned with theduel
degrading in storage like you get with ethanol stored in a boat.Diesel can
generally be stored for about two years without significantdegradation.

Joel,

I’ve used butyl tape for a deck hatch, baby stay track and pedestal guard deck
mount brackets. It did the job and remains pliable forever. The hardest part
of rebidding was to remove the old sealant which cracks with age. My
understanding is some 3M products adhere to the gelcoat better than the gelcoat
adheres to the fiberglass. I worked a sharpened putty knife between the item
and the deck so as to cut the sealant.

Here’s a great article on using butyl tape:

Listers,

My wife is considering buying me an autopilot system for my 50th (YIKES!)
birthday next year to replace our failing Robertson unit. She saw the video
from the 2015 Northeast Rendezvous of Nader sitting in his cockpit eating lunch
while the boat drove itself to Clinton and said “Oh you gotta have that!”

The Octopus hydraulic drive is already installed and I’m somewhat partial to
the Raymarine EV-200 system (and Fred Street has pretty good pricing), but
wanted to see if anyone else has recommendations on units I should look at.

All the best,

Edd

Re: Stus-List Trucking to Georgian Bay

2015-10-01 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

Steve; I have had three different boats trucked for long distances; assuming
your are dealing with a reputable company, there are a few things you should
do; first make sure everything that can move in the inside is secured, tied,
taped or removed from the boat; then take lots of photos for insurance
purposes; you can't have too many! Most of the time you will wrap the mast and
all of the rigging in plastic. Tie off the wheel so the rudder wont move
during transport. Sometimes they will want the electronics removed from the
binnacle... I have found that upon completion of the delivery, the truck
drivers appreciate a tip when they do a good job, (actually all of the time),
so have a little cash ready; then enjoy the experience; its really something to
see your boat going down the highway at 60+ mph!

Subject: Stus-List Trucking to Georgian Bay

Hi All,

Suhana is moving!
I'm loading her on a truck next Thursday and we're saying goodbye to Lake
Ontario. It's been nice but we've done the Thousand Islands two years in a row
and really want to get up to the North Channel.

I've never trucked a boat before. Anyone have some tips to share? I'm bringing
her to a marina with a travel lift. They are taking the mast down and hauling.
The trucking co is doing the loading, including the folded cradle. From there
they're driving up to Midland to Bay Moorings Marina where their travel lift
will bring her down and onto the cradle. The trucking co told me to keep my
cradle pads in the locker so that they can get at them when they are there, but
aside from that, no other tips. I'm sure there are things I'm not considering!
Anyone have any recommendations or things to consider when trucking a boat?
Mast lays down alongside the boat on their trailer, not on deck. I'm thinking
about removing my stanchions and lifelines just because.

Anyone here at Bay Moorings Marina in Midland? That's where we'll be landing.
Would be nice to know if any other listers are around. Would be great to have a
brain to pick about anchorages and gotchas in the area.

Cheers,
Steve

> misreported.<

I have looked closely at balsa core that was damp, wet, and rotten (failed). I
would not be concerned with a racer/cruiser C with damp core here and there.
For me, damp means the balsa still looks tan in color and smells like balsa or
polyester resin. (It is easy to assess the color and smell of the balsa by
pulling some hardware mounting bolts in the area of concern.) Unless heading
out on a adventurous offshore voyage I would not recommend making repairs
beyond re-bedding the deck hardware. Tapping around with a hammer, mildly damp
core will sound much like dry core unless delamination has occurred. IIRC
Baltek’s study of wet core failures found 80% of the structure’s strength is
retained up to 30% water gain.

If the balsa core is wet enough for the tea colored stain to be visible around
fittings and mounting bolts, especially near high load areas I would
investigate enough to be confident on how wet the balsa is and the limits or
the wet area. If the wet core area is in the immediate area of a fitting, for
example under a halyard block, I would make a limited repair in that area.
When tapping with a hammer, wet to very wet core will start to sound slightly
dull when compared to a known dry area.

If fully failed core is found, extensive repairs may be called for. On Calypso
the fully failed core we found stank like a swamp polluted with polyester resin
which looked black and was often completely broken down by some sort of acidic
chemical reaction. When tapped with a hammer the fully rotted/failed areas will
sound hollow and dull. Often there will be signs or failure like the dark tea
colored stains, corroded aluminum backing plates, and distorted inner skin.

For those boat owners with good DIY skills repairing limited core issues is
messy but not difficult. Over on Sailing Anarchy – Fixit Forum there is a
great topic underway titled “Ericson 32 mast step repair” that covers, with
pictures, replacing a failed plywood area under a deck stepped mast. The
process discussed would work great for balsa repairs and is similar in concept
to what I have done repairing failed plywood and balsa around Calypso’s mast
collar. I chose to work from below as the inner skin is significantly thinner
than the outer skin. As Calypso’s race oriented interior is “stick” built we
have good access to most of the damaged areas.

Based on a quick look at the listing, if I was in the market for a LF 38 I
would not be frightened off by a moderate amount of wet core but I would do my
own inspection and tapping about with a hammer.

Subject: Re: Stus-List Universal Engine panel wiring

David;

Previous owners, shade tree mechanics, and inexperienced/inexpensive mechanics
often make repairs or modifications that are ill advised or less than optimal.
For example, I recently helped one of the boaters on our City Docks diagnose
why his recently replaced fuel gauge did not seem to work reliably. Turned out
the guy who replaced the gauge had gotten power from the glow plug button – the
downstream side of the glow plug button – so the fuel gauge was only powered up
when the glow plug button was pushed.

Universals and Westerbekes are designed to be wired and started in the manner
described in the owner’s manual. I would restore the wiring to what is shown in
the wiring diagram, for a couple of reasons.

Regarding the 8V at the starter solenoid terminal: You saw battery voltage
(about 12.6v) on the hot side of the starter button with the button not pushed,
0v on the output side of the starter button with the start button not pushed,
and then 8v at the solenoid terminal when the button was pushed. When you push
the button you are energizing the coil of the solenoid and creating what is
almost a dead short across the solenoid. What you were measuring between the
solenoid terminal and ground is the voltage drop that results from resistance
in the coil, resistance in the metal of the starter, resistance across the
bolts holding the starter in place, and resistance in the metal of the block as
the current travels from the solenoid terminal to the ground wire. 8v is a bit
lower than I would expect, but I see nothing unusual in such a reading. Your
starter and solenoid are fine.

As Neil pointed out, pressing the glow plug button does a lot of things.

Of course it powers the glow plugs, which are in essence a high resistance
short in the wiring, and the voltage at the output side of the glow plug button
will drop into the 11.5v to 12.0 v range. Powering the glow plugs heats the air
flowing into the combustion chambers, which is needed for a cold start and
improves starting during hot starts. In indirect injection diesels (where fuel
is injected into the airflow before the intake valve instead of directly into
the hot compressed air just before the conclusion of the compression stroke)
the glow plugs are needed to get good initial combustion. Hot air makes the
starting easier and faster, reduces the load and cranking time on your starter,
and ultimately how much current you draw from the battery to start the engine.

The glow plug button also powers the electric lift pump that supplies fuel at 4
or 5 PSI (it might be as high as 7 PSI, but I don’t recall exactly) through the
engine fuel filter to the inlet of the high pressure injection pump. That lift
pump coming up to pressure is the rapid clicking sound you hear for the first
few seconds after you push the glow plug button. After the engine starts, the
pump is powered off the oil pressure switch as Neil described. In a hot start
situation without power to the lift pump, the high pressure pump will supply
fuel to the injectors for a few engine rotations. But if the engine does not
start the pump will be starved for fuel and the engine will not start. Fuel
starvation becomes more likely as your fuel filters get plugged over time.

As I said, I’d put the wiring back to what it was supposed to be according to
the manual and the wiring diagram.

Since I got my boat, I have been bothered by the fact that the engine will not
start in the way it is described in the manual unless plugged into shore power.
The manual says to hold the glow plug button for about 30 seconds and then
while continuing to hold that button in, push the start button. When I do
that, the starter does not turn over. If I release the glow plug button and
push the start button the engine starts fine. My father

My reference to prepping for a long offshore voyage had more to do with being
far away from a source of additional filters and other fuel related services.
The utility of having two filters and a manifold that can switch between them

rode of 80' of 5/16 chain and 150' of 9/16 nylon 3-strand. The biggest hassle
is mounting the roller on the bow. I am buying a stock roller and having a
stainless plate in the shape of the stemnhead fitting welded to the bottom;
that will be tapped into the stemhead.

Thanks Ken

For sale but not sold. As a matter of fact racing on it in 2 hours ….

If Koobalibra sells then my racing gets a lot more expensive as we have to use

Mike neglected to mention the 115 he races on out of Halifax, NS is also for
sale (but it is a long way from Florida).

I will echo what John has asked. What are you planning to do with the boat?

I have raced weekly on a CC115 for the past 6 years and have sailed quite a
bit and raced some on and against a 99 as well. Of the four models I believe
these are the most commonly raced

The CC 115 sails extremely well to wind but likes to have a good sized crew to
run it. We like to have 11 bodies on board when we race to give adequate
weight on rail and to get all the jobs done. Both the 115 and 99 have
oversized spinnaker and pole but the 115 requires dip pole gybes since it has a
mast end and a guy end on the pole. This requires a mast person as well as a
foredeck person for gybes. The 99 can do end for end or dip pole so requires
one less body. Last year in a race week 7 was an adequate crew size on a 99.

The rig on the 115 is quite large. The main sheet is led to a winch on either
coaming and is more work to run than that on the 99 which is I believe 6 or 8
to one with ratcheting cam cleats. The traveler on the 99 seems to work better
than that on the 115 as well. Much else is the same on the two models

The interiors of both the 99 and 115 are quite nice but the aft cabin in the 99
is a bit more cramped although my wife and I have slept quite comfortably in
the aft cabin on a 99 more than once.

If going offshore the 115 is a far bigger boat than the 99 but I cannot speak
for the 110 or 121.

For rigging the loads and simplicity of the 99 are very nice. Many of the
adjustments such as backstay are not hydraulic and are well geared and easily
adjusted. By comparison the loads on the 115 are higher making it difficult to
adjust outhaul, halyard etc while hard on the wind.

If you want a 99 for racing the boat named Rabbit is for sale. It is hull
#1, has the original 6'6 keel, carbon rig, bow sprit, carbon wheel and custom
Spartan interior. This would be the fastest CC99 in existence and there is a
huge difference in performance between the 6.5 ft keel and the 5.5 version.
Note that if you are concerned about going places because of a deep draft then
forget the 115 which I believe is 7 ft and go for the 5.5 ft 99.

Both of the newer CCs that I have regularly sailed on and raced on are very
nice designs and very nice sailing boats. CC IMO really dropped the ball when
they changed to only the shallower keel on the 99 as it has affected the
performance noticeably but is still a very well performing boat even with the
5.5 ft keel. The shallower keel has the weight a bit aft on the 99 compared to
the 6.5 ft keel making it very important to get weight forward for optimum
trim. A Carbon rig 6.5 ft keel version here in Halifax is very fast and an
Olson 30 that has raced against both variants of the 99 commented how much
faster the deeper keel one was.

You are not going to do wrong with either the 99 or the 115 but if short handed
sailing a lot the smaller 99 is easier to handle. IMO CC made 4 very lovely
models in these boats. Good luck with your search

Oh - and the cut out transoms on all models are something I am very envious
about. Swimming off the 99 is very convenient compared to climbing up the
transom and over the pushpit on our Frers 33

Subject: Stus-List Upgrades!

Landfall 38 update...bigtime!

Alegria came to me (formerly Lanakai, Fugawi out of Grand Traverse Bay, MI) in
2006 with older but working systems...SH VHF, ST4000 Auto, Furuno 16xx Radar,
Garmin GPS, Alpine Stereo. It hadn't been used in a couple of years and had
been kept inside. The Prior Owners had done a quality job in taking care of
her. I had previously upgraded the Autopilot to the XPS-5 SmartPilot and was
using a Garmin 478 for GPS and Charts.

Upgrades this year:
Replaced wet core under Pedestal and Rudder post.
Replaced Pedestal with Edson Vision Series...so I could have...
Raymarine a97 9 display w/remote at the helm and
Standard Horizion Matrix 2200 VHF with AIS and Remote MIC
Raymarine Color Hi Def Radar
Raymarine Fishfinder transducer (B60) in bow
Raymarine Masthead instruments
and Fusion AV750 stereo with Sirius/XM

This was a BIG project for me...and I could not have completed it without Fred
Street's very capable assistance. When I was overwhelmed, he just took over.
He plugged it in and everything worked! It was magicical. I highly recommend
his services.

Pics available upon request. Just in case anybody is interested...I do have a
bunch of leftover parts that I would be very pleased to part with for a modest
contribution to offset this year's expenses. Feel free to contact me off line
if you are interested...

I appreciate this list lotsI may not contribute much but read it daily.
Thanks again to Stu who deserves all of our support!
Now I just want to sail her.

Pegathy spent most of the month of June on a cruise from Baltimore to Nantucket
and back. Lots of sailing and lots of good shore time as well. Highlights
include:

The outside trip from Cape May to Block Island, wind almost 30 knts on the beam
the whole way and phosphorescent jellies at night. Seas 6-8.

Caribbean style navigation in 35knts (avoiding shoals by water color) on the
trip from Martha's Vineyard to Nantucket (charts showed 20 feet, actual depth
3-7 feet, boat draws 5, interesting),

Nantucket, a wonderful island

An osprey attacking my wind vane. The bird was considerate, though. He dropped
it on the deck, not in the water, and didn't break it.

Entering Woods Hole in dense fog, using my conch shell as a foghorn. Thank the
Lord for chartplotters.

The Mystic Seaport Museum

Sailing into Newport for the first time, and helming the 12 meter Intrepid.

Sailing under the bridges on my youth, Throgs Neck, Whitestone, Triboro, 59th
St. (Queensboro), Williamsburg, Manhattan, Brooklyn - all for the first time.

A $30 mooring 3 blocks from Broadway (79th St. Boat Basin)

Watching the World Trade Center disappear behind a thundersquall while less
than 2 miles away.

Sailing past the Statue of Liberty at sunset (wonderful pics)

A sleighride from the Verrazzano Bridge to Sandy Hook (40 knot winds).

Sailing among the dolphins off the NJ coast.

Loosing the alternator/water pump belt in the CD canal, towing the 38 footer
with the 8.5 foot, 2hp dink while installing the spares, all in front of the
Admiral who was waiting to have dinner with us at Shaeffers in Chesapeake City.

A wild finale sailing down the Chesapeake in a 4 foot chop and 30 knot winds.

I'm putting together a site with the log, pictures and video. I'll post a link
when it's done.

I once did a 100 mile distance race with a family that was a bit influenced by
reggae. The ONLY two CD's they brought were Bob Marley Legend and Jimmy
Buffett Songs You Know by Heart. They played them alternately continuously
from the noon start until our finish around 1:30am the next morning. I still
have trouble listening to either of them.

Before and after races we might fire up some Santana or some Southern Rock;
Credence, Alabama, Allman Bros., ZZ Top, etc. Gets the crew jazzed up.

The worst was a short fling with the CB Song of The Legendary Shack Shakers
Cocka Doodle Don't CD.

Generally we prefer variety. The Cafe del Mar CD's are nice. At anchor during
dinner we like soft tunes like Secret Garden. Most of the time we hook Pandora
to the stereo and go with soft jazz.

Joel,

I purchased a Beta 30 from Beta Marine in NC. The engine has almost exactly the
same specs as the old Universal M-35, including the 16” mounts.

The people at Beta, especially Farron Peffer, have been tremendously helpful
during each step of the process. They answer every question and offer up advice
easily. Could not imagine a better outfit in terms of service.

The engine is now in and all of the connections are being made today. A new
shaft is also going in (insert your own “Edd’s shaft wasn’t long enough” jokes
here.) In the end, I expect to have the Enterprise back by Monday.

It’s been a long, somewhat expensive, journey, but the end is in sight.

All the best,

Edd

Or...listening to a VHF exchange 150 miles from US coast between 2 boats during

tack by tack! When you get home, (and if you feel up to it), could you give
us a review of what you did to prep for the race, the boat and the crew, and
how you made decisions during the race? Some info about the return leg also?
Thanks

Will they begin separating after they get into the Gulf Stream? I have never

I am very pleased to report that Alianna was launched on Wednesday past and got
her sails put on, cockpit led running rigging setup and standing rigging rough
tuned yesterday ; she is now resting peacefully on her moorig in Schooner Cove
expecting to do a shake down sail tomorrow if all goes as planned. Her deep
cycle batteries held charge well over the winter and seem strong and reliable,
that's 9 consecutive years now and never off the boat since day one.
Surpisingly all electronics worked well without any problem but I did realize
after about 10 minutes that the gps chart plotter does require the card to be
installed, a small oversight caused by the excitement of being afloat after the
long winter on the hard. She cleaned up very well thanks to Awlgrip, Awlwash
and Awlcare and a new coat of black International bottm paint and the interior
stayed surpisingly fresh and clean during winter storage thanks to ample
ventilation and a garboard drain. I did have to rebed 3 fixed lenses in my
Beckson ports...for which I used 3M 5200 with some trepedation but I don't ever
want to remove these lenses again, so if reports are correct about the adhesive
tenacity of 5200 and this works over the long haul there may indeed be a place
to use 3M 5200 on a sailboat...time will tell and I'll be sure to let you all
know.

Thanks for all the info so far.

Racing is not an issue for this sail. Neither is real light air, I can motor,
use the spinnaker, or drag out one of my 170 genoas. I have a Mylar and light
Dacron 170 that both have hardly been used.

I am thinking smaller instead of bigger because when the wind is really kicking
I want to roll in to around 100% and still have a good shape.

I have looked for used sails for years now and kind of given up on that. Unless
the boat sinks, no one is giving up a good furling jib. If you want a racing
sail or an old hank-on sail, plenty of those around. It looks like I will need
to go new for this.

Hi, Patrick. I’ll admit my bias up front; I design and install marine
electrical and electronics systems, and have been a Raymarine-certified
installer.

Okay, that’s out of the way.

Raymarine in the past did have a bit of an issue with network versions; but now
that they’ve settled on SeaTalkNG for most medium-speed data (SeaTalkNG is
basically an NMEA2000 network with one additional wire to support the older
SeaTalk1 data), that’s not much of an issue any more. I’ve sold a bunch of i70
systems in the last year or two, including several to people on this list. Ask
them what they think of the i70. The feedback I’ve received so far is
universally positive. The i70 will repeat/display just about any NMEA2000 data
available on the network. That data can come from “dumb” analog transducers by
running them through an inexpensive ITC-5 instrument converter. Often the old
speed/depth transducers you currently have in your boat can work this way; and
even wind, if you have an older Raymarine wind transducer.

You can also go the route of “smart” transducers; the DST800 depth/speed/temp
triducer works great this way, and only requires one hole for the transducer.
Currently, Raymarine wind transducers do require a converter like the ITC-5 to
be used on a SeaTalkNG/NMEA2000 network. You could go with another
manufacturer’s “smart” wind transducer, but then you lose the ability to
calibrate the transducer.

I’m surprised at the answers you got from Ray’s tech support people; they’re
usually much better than that.

BG makes nice stuff; but you’re probably going to pay a bit more, as the
distribution network for sales of BG is much smaller than other manufacturers;
and that also makes it harder to get support. BG is part of Simrad, and tends
to gear their equipment towards the racing market (where they can command a
premium price). You could spend less and get Simrad, with many of the same
features. Or go with Raymarine.

I can source Raymarine, Furuno, Simrad and other gear for people on the CC
list at dealer prices; let me know off-list if you’d like to talk further about
this.

Hi, Adrian, and welcome to the list! And the LF38! Both excellent choices…
:^)

The original tank in my 1979 LF38, hull number 009, was made by Kracor up here
in Wisconsin; it’s 32 gallons, and their mold number 5064. I'll email you a
PDF spec sheet on the tank offline.

As far as I know, you can still get these from Kracor.

Hi Everyone,

I am a new LF 38 owner in the Annapolis area. The brown water holding tank on
my boat failed prior to my purchase and had been removed. My LF 38 has the
STBD quarterberth, not the nav station. The holding tank will go under this
berth. While I am open to thoughts around soft tanks or composting heads, I am
most interested in finding out if anyone can tell me the make/model/size of the
original holding tank so I can determine if I can replace it or look to another
vendor/option.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Stus-List rig tuning

On everything up top on the standing rigging, Rob, by up top do you mean
that the rings are still acceptable for the turnbuckles? thanks

Subject: Stus-List rig tuning

On everything up top on the standing rigging, I now use only SS cotter
pins.this is because on several occasions, and I can not explain how it
happened, the split rings vanished. Luckily, nothing fell down before the
missing split ring was detected. I have no explanation how the split rings
disappeared but I do know that since being replaced with cotter pins, there has
not been been a missing pin.

The thread Subject is rig tuning..on that note I have rod rigging and a
Loos RT10 tuning gauge is a must for me..I can't pull on shrouds and tell
how much tension is there. Now someone will chime in and tell me to measure my
threads in the turnbuckles. But how do you initially do that without a
reference point with the benefit of a gauge.

When we were campaigning our Kirby 25, we made rig adjustments depending on
the conditions. We still used a Loos gauge to take the guessing out of the
equation.

I shouldn't admit this but I will.on my shroud turnbuckles, I use the
small plastic pull/lock strings (or whatever they are called). Once I get my
rig tuned early in the Spring after a few sails, it stays that way all season
unless I adjust it after periodic checking with the Loos gauge and sighting the
mast, of course.

Re: Stus-List Question about steering cables

2015-05-06 Thread Richard N. Bush via CnC-List

Rick, thanks, I do not have any slack wires, but I can deflect/pull them
about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch; some one had suggested I look at the Edson Utube
video, which I did; they say the 1/2 to 3/4 in. is about right; leaving little
or no play in the wheel. I think I'm good on this one , only 1,001 more things
to do!

Richard,
Someone else may chime in with better info, but my question is what you
consider “play”. Does that mean that you can deflect the cable by .5-.75”? or
that the cable hangs that much with no pressure? I would think the second
scenario would not be acceptable. I would also think that you would feel that
in the steering or will at some point. I have adjusted mine to “snug” but mine
is readily available! Thanks for reminding me though as I need to check mine
as well.

Cheers
