Re: [CGUYS] A Multigenerational Look at the iPad
The second market of aging baby boomers and the greatest generation may be even more significant in that it is mostly untapped. This market has been largely bypassed by the information age. The majority is off the grid and many are computer phobic. The PC or smart phone is not intuitive to them I have to say that I think they are on the mark with this assessment. My husband is fairly computer illiteratehe has a macbook and an iMac but I had to set them up for him and have to answer daily questions on how to accomplish what to me are obvious things. His cell phone is as old as he is (67)g and he really wants to get rid of it because he doesn't need it. But ever since the announcement of the iPad he has bombarded me with questions about it and what it will do (for him). He is a readerwith books lining the walls and every other surface of his officeand is huge on newspapers but is sick of having to throw them out because of the waste. He does crossword puzzles all the time.so for him, the big iTouch is perfect. He couldn't manipulate or see to read on the small version so the big one is the answer. This is the first time Ive ever had to compete with him for first rights to a tech toy! I want an iPad too! [CGUYS] ? about download speeds
I don't really understand how to interpret the speed I get on the speed test sites. [CGUYS] Has anyone added Bluetooth to a mac tower?
I just got a gorgeous bluetooth keyboard (Logitech diNovo Edge) and was shocked to discover my MacPro doesn't have bluetooth! I had thought it was standard in all Macs but mine was the last of the ones made in 2007 and in Jan of 2008 new models came out. The older ones didn't have bluetooth as standard equipment. So, I've found instructions on the web for adding it and have ordered and received the bluetooth card...but I'm REALLY nervous about installing it. I've added RAM and harddrives.they're plug and play. But this thing is TINY and you have to attach a TINY antenna wire from the computer to the card. Have any of you actually done this? Was it fairly easy and straight forward? I guess I need some hand-holding. I really don't want to take the tower to the Genius bar and leave it there. It's heavy (and I've had recent shoulder surgery and not supposed to lift things) and I don't want to wipe all my passwords from it. So, I need to do my own work I guess. Or I could return that keyboard...nah.it's a work of art! Paula there are also inexpensive bluetooth USB dongles that you can purchase that will do the same thing and just plug into the USB port. Sheesh , you'd think they might have mentioned that on the Apple Discussions group. Thanks, Stewart. If I feel too intimidated when I start installing the card (which I already have), I'll search for the dongle. Re: [CGUYS] iPhones Everywhere
'm seeing them all over the place. Last night everyone sitting in the row in front of me was fiddling with their iPhone while waiting for the lecture to start. This reminds me of the early I'm seeing a lot of them too. I LOVE my iPhone and wonder why I waited so long to get one. The voice quality is sharp and clear and I never lose my connection like I did with Verizon. Im sure that is just related to locality tho. The only downside is battery life. If I actually talked on the phone many times a day, I would be constantly recharging it. But it last for hours and hours playing Pyramid and Solitaire! I did get a portable recharger here: http://richardsolo.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPRODProdID=264 It's small and easy to carry in a pocket or purse. And I just noticed they have a newer one out that has a larger capacity. Might have to get it too. g It will recharge iPods that use the dock connector. Re: [CGUYS] Comcast puts on the brakes
Note that if they can gat away with that, they can do anything else they please. Next they will be sending you a list of approved partner websites where traffic won't be counted against your bandwith cap. Only option I see is local: getting the neighbors together to let the local pols know that Comcast is reneging on its charter commitments and its charter should be voided. Let a more honest company take over its operations. Comcast will argue that Federal regs preempt local control. I couldn't agree more, Tom. But getting MY neighbors to join in an effort to fight Comcast is an exercise in futility. I live in Big Business country and with the exception of maybe 2 other people in a neighborhood of over 100 families, I am vastly outnumbered. Signs I put in my yard just asking for the protection of Habeas Corpus, no political signs, are stolen immediately. The one neighbor I am in touch with who would agree that this (comcast's edict) is wrong would tell me he is afraid to draw attention to himself. I live amongst sheep and wolves. Does anyone know what Verizon's policy is regarding bandwidth? Do they also restrict it? I could go back to their slower service over the phone lines if Comcast kicks me off. Re: [CGUYS] Comcast puts on the brakes
Does anyone know what Verizon's policy is regarding bandwidth? Do they also restrict it? I could go back to their slower service over the phone lines if Comcast kicks me off. From an engineering point of view, I think there would be little incentive to cap FIOS because it does not have the same flaws as cable provided broadband. Of course they still could apply caps as a means of charging extra for something that costs them almost zero. Evil has no bounds. Unfortunately, FIOS isn't available at my home tho it IS just 3/4 mile away! When I temporarily tried the Verizon DSL the technician couldn't believe we didn't have it but we don't. It's CONcast for high speed or nothing. We had the cable vs DSL/fiber discussion here a few months ago and our cable fan bois insisted that cable provided broadband was not technically flawed and severely bandwidth limited. We now see that cable can not carry the load. My download speed last night varied from 4874 kb/sec to 8676 kb/sec. It used to be a lot faster. Of necessity, as more people sign up for cable provided broadband, the caps will get lower and lower and lower. I'm afraid you are right about that. Re: [CGUYS] Comcast puts on the brakes
So, I wrote to Comcast today to let them know that this LONG time Comcast customer was going to have serious issues with their bandwidth limit because I would be backing up many hundreds of GB's of data to an online service and that was perfectly legal to do. Was I going to be 'punished' by being banned for a year if I exceeded the limit several months in a row while I was backing up? Here is the answer I got from themand it was patently obvious he wasn't answering my question/concerns at all. And , yes, I have responded to them. From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Web Form Submission: General Inquiry (KMM3291V93103L0KM) Date: September 16, 2008 3:25:39 PM EDT To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Paula, Thank you for your message concerning the Comcast High-Speed Internet service. My name is Jordea, I will be glad to assist you today. We maintain an Acceptable Use Policy as part of our high-speed Internet service. The policy describes what constitutes unacceptable conduct and use of the service, including requirements regarding data usage. We?ve had our Acceptable Use policy in place for years and the policy itself remains the same. The only thing that is changing is now we?re going to provide a specific number (250 GB) for what would qualify as excessive use. We?ve been evaluating a monthly data usage threshold for quite some time and we?ve heard from customers that they would like us to provide a specific number for excessive use. Excessive users consume substantially more data than typical residential users?only less than 1% of customers use excessive amount of data today. It?s important to keep in mind that that the vast majority of customers don?t fall into the excessive use category. To learn more about excessive use, you can go to our FAQs page at http://help.comcast.net/content/faq/Frequently- Asked-Questions-about-Excessive-Use The 250 GB monthly threshold will begin October 1, 2008. You will continue to get the same amount of speed you?ve been getting. Keep in mind that only a very small number of customers actually reach 250 GB in a month today. As part of our pre-existing policy, we will continue to contact the top users of our high-speed Internet service and ask them to curb their usage. A typical residential high-speed Internet user doesn?t even come close to using that amount of data. To put it in perspective, currently, the median data usage by our high-speed customers is approximately 2 - 3 GB each month. 250 GB falls more into the excessive use category?going well above and beyond typical Internet usage. To reach 250 GB in a month, for example, a customer would have to do any of the following: Send 50 million emails (at 0.05 KB/email) Download 62,500 songs (at 4MB/song) Download 125 standard-definition movies (at 2 GB/movie) Upload 25,000 hi-resolution digital photos (at 10 MB/photo) There are a number of online tools you can use to measure your data consumption. You can find such tools by simply doing a Web search ? for example, you can search ?bandwidth meter? to locate some options. If you use multiple computers in your home, you should make sure to measure and combine their monthly data usage to get an accurate read of total data consumption for your entire account. Thank you for choosing Comcast. We value your business. Re: [CGUYS] Comcast puts on the brakes
How would a Comcast subscriber know when that usage limit has come close to being exceeded? Does Comcast provide subscribers with notifications about how much or how little usage they have left before being kicked off? Is it the subscribers duty to keep tabs on all their bandwidth usage? No, they do not let you know. In the post I sent a bit earlier with the response from CONcast, it tells me that I can do a search online to find my own software for monitoring my own bandwidth usage and that I'll have to do it for every computer in the house and add them up myself. THAT is not their problem. Paula/IN/USA * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

While everyone is talking cellphones..I'd like input on which ones have the clearest sound on a call. I'm on Verizon and have been using the original LG Chocolate for a couple of years and I HATE it. I struggle to u nderstand what people are saying on it and it has nothing to do with the volume. I can turn it up or down and the voices are still mushy or garbled and Im constantly asking people to repeat themselves. I really want an iPhone but there are still just too many problems with it so I am waiting. I'd like WiFi and some basic PDA functions (calendarw/alarm,addressbook,notes). Don't care too much about the camera because Im picky about photos and as Tom mentioned, no matter how many MPs they have, their lenses are crap and the photos reflect that. I just carry a small pocket camera all the time. If my Palm LifeDrive had a clear sounding phone in it, it would be perfect! Re: [CGUYS] My Macintosh saga
They couldn't, however, do this for everyone, obviously. I wonder what their formula for this level of service is? Several months ago the display went out on my MacBook Pro that was only abouty 4 mos old. I took it to the Genius Bar and they said they had to send it in because they couldn't fix it.obviously. A couple of days later a woman from Apple called and offered me a brand new one exactly like mine but it would take 2 weeks as they were out of the 15 right then or I could have a 17 right away. I was amazed they offered the bigger one as a replacement but I said I'd wait for the 15 to come. I just didn't want to lug around a 17 machine. And for a while I had lots of problems with my iPods and they always gave me new ones, no questions asked. Re: [CGUYS] Will iPhone Kill Radio?
There are more podcast feeds than I can keep up with. Some of the best are from NPR, CBC, BBC, and some local stations. iTunes keeps filling up with more and more good stuff. I especially like APM's Future Tense. These are short, 5-minute programs that often inform me of tech events that are important but not covered elsewhere, I have to ditto Tom here. I used to have every TV in the house on all day. Now there is just one on for 'noise' for my parrots. I have very few TV shows I bother to watch. Radio offers nothing unless I can get an occasional program off XM when in the car. But iTunes keeps me so busy with a multitude of informative and educational programs that I have a hard time choosing what to listen to first. I download dozens of podcasts every day and find myself looking for excuses to work at something that allows me to also listen to my mp3 player. Podcasting is the future of media. It will just take some time to get the masses educated as to how to access them. I can listen to my favorite NPR show and my Photoshop tutorials and Mike Malloy and Thom Hartmann shows when it's convenient for me and not have to be glued to a tv or radio at their chosen time. Re: [CGUYS] Amazon's S3 service and Jungle disk or Google docs
I mentioned Cyberduck already. It has a setting to throttle the data rate. I missed that one, Tom. Ill look into it. I checked out S3 as db suggested but it would be around $75/MONTH for me to store all my photos, music, videos and some other misc data. That's a lot per year for just a home user. Guess I'll stick with ext. drives for now. I have joined Smugmug tho and will gradually be uploading all my .jpg's to them so at least those will be safely out there. Interestingly they also offer a vault service so you can store data other than photos thru them. But their vault is thru S3 and it would cost me $99/month for less data than if I went directly thru S3. I'd better start using all the blank cd's and dvd's I have sitting here and just make copies. Re: [CGUYS] Amazon's S3 service and Jungle disk or Google docs
Maybe you can make Mozy work for you. Once it's all backed up won't your additions and changes be minimal? A total restore would take a long time too but would be do-able if you didn't mind waiting. The saying: Time is money applies here I guess... I suppose that's true but I'm afraid Comcast will cut my speed if I'm uploading 24/7 for months which is what it would take to do it all. When I stop the upload and restart it later it appears to begin all over again so I don't want to stop it. Also the Mac version doesn't have a place where you can adjust the speed of the upload to lessen the pressure on the computer resources so I'm stuck with the way they have it set. I've emailed their tech support (3 days ago) but have gotten no response. I'm going to check out the links you sent to reviews of other services too. Thanks for your input on this. Re: [CGUYS] Amazon's S3 service and Jungle disk or Google docs
Does your backup need to be online (i.e. over the Internet)? It sounds like you might be better served by using an external (USB, Firewire, or eSATA) hard-disk. Get a 500GB unit (or more, prices are coming down, and your data will only increase over time). Actually, get two. Then, after doing your first backup, take it with you on yo I've done that, Vicky. But I have found that my external drives end up not working right after sitting for a while. I have two WD 'MyBook' drives that my mac won't mount so I can't get anything off them or add to them. Another one is making loud clicking sounds so doesn't sound like it's going to be around long...and when I tried to mount it recently my Mac wouldn't see it at all. It is backed up on another drive so all is not lost. I just thought 'online' storage would be safer. It's nice to be BACK! You have no way of knowing what is being blocked and no mechanism to retrieve any false positives. It's amateur hour at Comcast. Oh how true. I now wonder what else isn't coming through. ANd I also know that some of my email never gets to the recipients but that seems to be an AOL problem as it is AOHell that refuses my comcast mail sent to friends if I send to more than a tiny few of them at once. If I send something to all of my friendsmaybe a dozen or so.AOL refuses it for the 4 people who use it. And for a whilemaybe when Comcast was bouncing my ComputerGuys mail.it was also bouncing mail back to friends who had sent me private mail. Re: [CGUYS] LCD monitor question
Paula, Dim LCD screen has become a common compaint, and there may be a solution! I have been repairing laptops recently, and they have a small board along the boarder of the LCD screen called the 'inverter'. It can cost as little as $20 in single quantity. According to http://www.inventgeek.com/Projects/shorts/lcdfix.aspx you can install it in as little as 20 minutes. I first looked for one of these six months ago, and the one I needed cost $95, but I searched for the same inverter last month, and found several sources for under $30 and lots of models to choose from! This would indicate that there is a growing market for this type of repair! Save that monitor from the junk heap! - Brian Thank you Brian! I'll check this out and see if Im capable of doing the repair. Nothing lost except the price of the inverter if it doesn't work , I guess, as the old monitor is going to be recycled when I replace it. Re: [CGUYS] LCD monitor question
Why would you replace a proven technology that still works with a newer technology that apparently has a shorter lifespan? Business reason please. I switched because the lcd's are easier on my eyesat least when they are working well. My CRT monitors were really causing my eyes to hurt. [CGUYS] LCD monitor question
I bought a new Dell LCD monitor so I could have a dual setup. Now, with both of them side-by-side, I realize that my eyes weren't going bad fastthe older LCD monitor(also a Dell) is very dim and the letters are a bit soft or blurry. I do calibrate my monitors and had been having problems getting it to calibrate well. I thought my eyes were going! This monitor is about 3 1/2 yrs old. Is it normal for lcd's to go bad this quickly? I have t he brightness turned all the way up now and it's still pretty dim, especially compared to the new one.And even with calibrating, the colors are very different between the two. I had planned on keeping my email on the older monitor and Word too. But I can hardly bear to read anything on it now. My eyes won't stay focused and I have to squint to bring the words into focus. If I put it on the new monitor, no problem reading at all. Just wanting to know if this is normal or has it gone bad faster than it should have? Im not sure I can continue to use it even for things like the tool bars of Photoshop, calendar, iTunes etc because it really bothers my eyes. Thanks! No, but Mozy is excellent depending on what you needs are. Mozy has a decent interface, free for 2 GBs, $4.95 for unlimited storage, Really? UNLIMITED storage? I'm talking maybe 600 gig of photos. Another 500 gig if I back up my iTunes folder. I don't need file sharing. Mozy.com??? Re: [CGUYS] Verizon DSL Service Dry Loop
No. DSL does not work that way. You get the speed you pay for plus usually a small margin. You get it reliably. You don't get wild highs and lows. That wasn't my short experience with ATT DSL. I started out paying for the highest speed they offered and tested it several times a day for a week. I never got the higher speed but the lowest speed I got was the 'top' of the next level down so I called and switched to the lower cost service since the highest speed for t hat was what I'd been getting. Suddenly my speed dropped by half or more and was not even getting the minimum speed advertised for that level. I called tech support several times with no luck in improving my speed and lots of excuses. I had 30 days to cancel without having to pay THEM for cancelling and that's what I did. Cancelled it. I still had my Comcast cable going on another computer so I just hooked everything back up to that and instantly was back up to speed. The DSL was cheaper but I got what I paid for. Re: [CGUYS] ebook readers
Be sure that the person who will potentially receive the ebook really wants one and realizes its features and limitations. Otherwise the ebook will end up spending more time on a shelf or in a drawer, or broken. For electronic books, I prefer unabridged audiobooks on my iPod. My 2 cents. If anyone gives you an ebook reader, Betty, I'll be happy to take it off your hands!!! I'd love to have one but can't really rationalize it. I am one of Audible.s original subscribers so I have hundreds of books there that I listen to on my mp3 player but sometimes it's more convenient to read one and I just like electronic gadgets, I guessand the ability to carry a bunch of books with me in a small space. I have a Palm LIfeDrive and do put a few ebooks on that and read even on a small screen without a lot of problem. I always have it with me so always have a book available. I also find that I get very irritated with people (read:husband) when they interrupt me when I'm reading an audible book because it's very much like interrupting a movie. I don't feel that way if I'm reading on the Palm and can immediately look down and see where I was and go back a couple of sentences to refresh my memory. SoI say both are good and paper is ,well, old technology. Re: [CGUYS] Podcast limitation with iPods
From what I can tell one can only get a few recent programs from iTunes and that iPods only work (well?) using iTunes. QUESTION 1: Is that true? QUESTION 2: Are there any combinations of software and hardware that one can use to put old ARCHIVED programs on a PDP? I pretty much only use my iPod for podcasts and I've gotten them from many sources. However, I believe you have to transfer them to the iPod via iTunes. Even when I was Windows only I used iTunes to make the transfer. I've never tried using any other method. I know you can see your iPOd as an external disk in My Computer when it's attached so you could theoretically drag the podcast over to that 'drive' but I don't know how you would find it to play it. iTunes is free and works with Windows so that would be the most trouble free way to go. As to archived podcasts, if you can download them to your computer you then, in iTunes, go to File-Add to Library and in the window that opens choose the location of the file. You can choose multiple files by holding down the...ooops,it's Command on a Mac...forget what it is on Windowsmaybe Shift) Anyway, they'll be placed in your iTunes library where you can then transfer them to the iPod. Enjoy! I LOVE podcasts! She claims we've used 1/3 of the total of earth's natural resource. In her fancy graphic she shows things like trees being cut down...wow a third of all forests are decimated? In 3 decades? wow. Oh wait...forested areas have remained relatively stable since the early 1900's since companies that log these forests know that if you don't plant also they would have been out of business in 1909. Since no one really knows for sure how much coal or oil or natural gas lies under ground it's hard to pinpoint using 1/3 of it in the last 30 years. She also states offhandedly that almost 50% of the federal budget goes to military. Most estimates point closer to 20% even with adjustments made f I love STUFF. I have lots of STUFF so I'm not anti shopping. Mike, I'll see if I can contact the people who made it and find out where they got their facts. It is my understanding.but I DONT have facts yet to support itthat the forestry companies cannot replant trees in large enough numbers to replace the enormous forests that are now just gone forever. ANd in other countries, they aren't always replanting, they're just stripping the trees away and leaving the ground open to erosion. And the destruction of the mountains in W.Virginia , USA, alone has destroyed not only natural beauty but has poisoned the water of nearby streams that people still use, forced the people who've lived on those mountains off their land because of landslides from above and have kept people from accessing their land...and in some cases their family graveyards because the mining companies have bought the land around them and denies them accessat least until the mountain is mined out. Photos of such can be found here: http://ohvec.org/ and here: http://ilovemountains.org/multimedia I am not from W.Va or anyplace where this kind of thing is going on so I don't have a direct interest in it. But I am a consumera big one. I love to shop but if my habits are going to make life miserable for future generations, I think I...and others like me.should at the very least be aware of how we are impacting the future. I didn't take from the movie that we needed to return to prehistoric behavioronly that we should work to lessen the bad stuff that comes out of consumerism by finding cleaner ways to make our 'stuff' and by using renewable basic ingredients. Tom P said: Normally, DSL should not do that. This implies that some bandwidth is being consumed by NACs. The speed measuring sites do not seem to register NACs. Tom, what is NAC? I just checked the DSL speed and it was 962 down...and less than a minute later it was 2280 down. But no matter what, the cable is staying 4 times faster or more even tho it too varies widely. Now, I do pay a lot more for the cable$25/mo for the DSL and $49/mo for Comcast but the speed matters to me. I am used to downloading podcasts very quickly and have not enjoyed waiting and waiting for them to finish downloading with the DSL. Re: [CGUYS] I'm so confused...need simple instructions. was:Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok? Update
Mike said: It's only anecdotal but I've heard from many people across the country with DSL that they almost always get the lesser service then what they pay for on average. This is exactly what she described. When she dropped it to the service she was actually getting, the actual speed dropped again. That's exactly what was happening. I was getting the top speed for my current level of service when I was on the elite level which was the bottom of the speed for that level. Once I changed to a lower service level, I never again got that 3 mbps speedexcept with ATT's own speed test. That test site is consistently faster than any of the other sites I've used and since it is run by ATT, I imagine it is rigged to give optimum results even tho the customer can never actually achieve them. Now that I've got the cable going on my laptop, I can see that my speed it immensely faster even tho it is a windy, snowy ,freezing day and surely all my neighbors are inside and online. Normally I do notice slowdowns on cable when kids are home from school or on weekends but right now at least it's fast compared to the DSL. I think Im going to cancel the DSL. It's a lot cheaper than the cable but maybe I can tell Comcast I'm going to cancel and get a better rate with them. ;-) Paula IN/USA Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO what a ride! [CGUYS] I'm so confused...need simple instructions. was:Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok? Update
I decided to go ahead and set up the ATT DSL and see if I liked it. I had signed up for the elite service which was to give me up to 6000kb/s. Of course she didn't tell me up to but said I'd get 6000 kb/s. I managed to figure out how to turn off the wireless in the ATT modem so I could continue to use my Apple Airport Extreme. It took me all day and part of the evening but I finally had all the computers in the house connected and everyone getting their email...no small thing for me as we get mail from multiple sources and none of them initially would come in with their old settings. My husband who is totally tech ignorant was ranting and raving something about why can't I just leave things alone. ;-) So it was a tense day to say the least but I did get it all figured out. Then I started testing the speed I was getting and it was wy below what she said I would get and was paying extra for...I was only getting 3000 kb/s. She said I should get between 3500 to 6000 kb/s and that maybe I should just downgrade to the next lowest level whose high speed was 3000 kb/s so I'd get the fastest level of that. OK. I did so. Then a few hours later, I was running more tests and the speed was only 1200 to 2200 kb/s in a level that was to guarantee me 1500-3000. From the reading I was doing on DSLreports, it appears they can turn up and down your speed remotely? So would they deliberately make it so you only got the bottom of the level you paid for? Would threatening to cancel make them give me what I paid for? Jim just came out and told me that some video clips that he had been able to play before now tell him that we don't have enough speed for them to play correctlyand they play very jerky. He's definitely not happy and neither am I. I feel like we're getting jerked around with this speed thing. So, I decided to hook the comcast cable back up and unplug the dsl. The cable modem shows activity but I can no longer connect to the internet. I even turned off the wireless and plugged the cable directly into the Mac Pro.shows ethernet is on but no connection. Then I plugged it directly into my laptopsame thing. So the cable, which had been working just fine is now useless and the DSL is too slow for what we need it to do. Besides just bitching and unloading my frustration on here, I am asking for some simple explanation of how these two forms of internet connection work differently and how I can go about getting the cable modem to go back out to the 'net again. Do I have to get down on my knees and cry and beg Comcast to come fix it and promise never to cheat on them again? Can you not have both DSL and cable connections in the same house even if on separate machines? I'm sitting here in Broadband Hell , watching the freezing rain fall on the 1 of snow we got this a.m. and feeling sorry for myself. I have to stop and remember that Tulsa has had no electricity for a week and are getting bombarded yet again. So feel free to smack me upside the head and tell me to get over it! g But if you can get my cable to work again on even one machine I'd be s grateful. Re: [CGUYS] I'm so confused...need simple instructions. was:Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok? Update
Mike said: .AT$T's motto is 'we aren't happy till you aren't happy.' Funny but sad. I will say that everyone I worked with was very nice and tried hard to make sure everything was going as it should...tho they did screw up the initial order requiring me to cancel everything and start over again with more time on the phone. Tom P said: If you reprogrammed your AirPort router to log you in via the DSL modem it will no longer have the settings to connect you through the cable modem. So, no, it is not as simple as just moving the wire from the DSL modem to the cable modem. I turned off all the routers and other equipment except the cable modem which I plugged straight into my laptop and it did show it was connected but wouldn't go to the 'net. However, I did just unplug the modem and computer and left them off for a while. I just restarted and I have a cable connection now on the laptop using the ethernet cable. So I was able to test my cable speed on there. What I have found is that the 3 different testing web sites I used all gave me very different numbers so I still have no idea what I'm actually getting. The ATT speed test site had me testing the fastest both on DSL and cable : DSL: Download between 2200-2500 kbps; upload between 640-660 kbps Cable: Download 20.114 mbps Upload 1.590 mbps The Test My connection site that Tom recommended: Varied widely depending on location it went to. The Washington DC site was twice as fast as Chicago. DSL Chicago Download 770 kbps to 1.o9 Mbps; Upload around 645 kbps WA DC download 2.85 Mbps Upload 648 kbps Cable: Chicago download 2.93 Mbps Upload 1.59 Mbps WA DC download 5.49 Mbps Upload 1.59 mbps The DSLreports site DSL Download 1630 kbsp Upload 580 kbps Cable download 11249 kbps Upload 1542 kbps So, I have no idea what to do now. I have a little less than 30 days to decide if I'm going to keep DSL. If I go back to Comcast I have to figure out how to get my router to work with it again and change all the email settings. UGH. But it does appear that , right now at least, Comcast is considerably fastertho at times it seems to crawl along. Do those of you with more experience in this area have any thoughts or opinions? The only color I'd consider is red; the others are too boring. I'll have to borrow my son's iPod touch when he gets his soon [I won't be bored with that, either]. Go to the Apple Store and pl Woman after my own heart. I love color everywhere and having to choose between black or white really didn't thrill me. My video iPod had a wardrobe of exciting colors and patterned cases! I gave my son-in-law the new Nano for his birthday and he loves it. Tho small, the screen is sharp and clear. OH...and besides the audio books I mentioned earlier and tons of music, I also have a lot of photos, a number of video tutorials for photoshop, some tv shows and my address book and reminders on it. This version does it allalmost. Re: [CGUYS] iPod Recommendations?
I'm ashamed to say I can't leave home without my 30GB video iPod. I've got my entire CD collect I never leave home without my 60 gb video iPod, either...and I only have 10gb left! If you get your wife a gift cert. for Audible.com she'll get hooked on audio books too. I think now you have to get what they call the Classic ipod to get a similar one. I was really wanting an iPOd touch before they came out but they don't have nearly enough storage on them and no buttons that enable you to turn it on and off or go back and forward without looking at the screen. Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok? Update
The box with my DSL ATT stuff arrived today and Im not sure I'm going to even try to install it. I hadn't realized that their modem was also the wireless box. I have NO intention of redoing my wireless network again. I just bought...and lovean Airport extreme and want to use it. According to the instructions in the box, I have to use the ATT modem and set up wireless thru that. No way. Does anyone know if I can keep using the modem I currently use for Comcast and plug the DSL cable into that? It's much more complicated than I had anticipated just because I'm not new to this and want to keep my equipment the way it is now. Thanks guys. Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok?
DSL *can be* faster. In practice it is often a lot slower. DSL bandwith is dedicated to you and is throttled back to give you the speed you pay for. Cable is shared so your speed depends on who you are sharing with. As we have seen recently with Comcast, it can also be limited in various ways. DSL is usually more reliable. Well, I'm going to have their elite level with supposedly very fast speeds. In evenings and on weekends my Comcast connection really drags along most of the time. And I have suspected that they have stopped some of my downloads at times. I was redownloading a lot of files from iTunes and after a short time they'd just stop and I had to restart them...sometimes many times. It will be interesting to see how much difference I notice. Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok?
How differently each of us sees things. I was forced into 1.5mbit over a year ago and have been suffering ever since. I can't do more then one thing at a time. I used to download all my podcasts in a minute or so, now i'm waiting almost an hour for all of them to update one or two at a time because there isn't enough bandwith to do them at once. If I have BT going forget it...I get knocked off *IRC* when I'm on BT. Let me rephrase...*I get knocked off IRC basically just text chat* when I'm using BT Mike, who is your service through? I definitely want to avoid them! I get dozens of podcasts in and stream radio and surf all at the same time. When I asked the ATT rep what speed Id get with the elite service the number 6000 was mentioned but I didn't catch what the 6000 was. I'm pretty sure I'm not getting close to it tho on Comcast. Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok?
ATT tried to do the same to me. I figured that I would be getting something more reliable, but slower. I opted to wait until FIOS was in the neighborhood. It may be worthwhile to you to have the reliability over the speed. -- John DeCarlo, My Views Are My Own No, John, speed is everything! g Comcast has been reliable enough but slows down to a crawl when kids get home from school or over the weekends. Re: [CGUYS] The Worst Thing about Macs
I can't help but say that the worst thing about Macs/OSX is the Dock. Great operating system otherwise but whenever I am using OS X and multi-tasking between programs, web pages, files etc, I am spending a LOT of time struggling with the various windows... trying to find one I had open before, trying to get others I have, open out of the way etc. Hmmm, I also have several programs running at once with multiple windows but I love using the dock. When I was on Windows, I put a dock-like software on that so I could have the same function there. I guess you must have a LOT more running than I do if it's hard to find them on the dock. Re: [CGUYS] iPod cases
I have several different iPod cases for various activitiesand because I like to decorate mine. g iSkin makes many types but I've used the rubberized ones that come with a screen protector and wheel protector. You can even get those (the protectors) in varying colors if you like variety. They've been very durable BUT...as others have mentioned, the belt clip breaks eventually or slips off. They also make a hard plastic, clear case with a kick stand so it will sit up for watching video. I haven't used it but do use a similar one by another company on my Lifedrive and like it a lot. It has protected my Lifedrive well over a couple of years of drops and bumps. http://www.covercase.com/product_detail.php? pid=585gclid=CK_0kZeFvY4CFR6QIgodch38zA I also have the iFrogzanother rubber one that has bands that encircle the edge of the iPod...mainly decorative but it does cover the slot for the dock and keeps dirt out. It comes off easily but is still a PITA if you dock and undock frequently. From that company I also purchased my favorite casea metal one lined in rubber. Looks great, really protects the iPod but..the belt clip broke offthe screw actually broke in half. I tried using it just in my pocket or slipped in my waist band but the metal is slick so it was always slipping out. http://ifrogz.com/ I like this one because you wear it around your neck and can stick it inside your shirt when working in a wet or messy environment. I use it for gardening. http://www.thegadgetlocker.com/product_info.php/products_id/1493? osCsid=a3ca8caa91909c6f3926af37e78dd768 This is the clear case I use on my LIfedrive. VERY well made and durable. I like it a lot and if I eventually get the new iPhone-like iPod, I'll probably get this one for it. http://www.otterbox.com/ And if you really want to have fun with your iPodor know someone who does, this is a great site: http://www.istyles.com/ Paula/IN/USA raven880atindy.net * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Change in Terminology AND broken iBooks
I'm getting into this topic a bit late but: The MacBook PRO is the one that may be more delicate, although friends ho have them haven't had problems--yet. The MacBook [replacing the iBook] is solid. FWIW, my MacBook PRO was knocked off the table and landed face down on the floor. I've had this happen many times with my Toshiba laptops and only problem I had was a broken USB port one time. But the MacBook PRO is a different animal. It booted but there was nothing but light on the screen. Couldn't do anything to get the screen to work. I took it to the Apple Store and they sent it to Apple for repair. It was less than a year old and I did have Apple Care for it so no charges. That was 2 wks ago. A part had to be ordered for it. They called me yesterday to tell me the part still had not come in and they considered this way too long a time for repair so they offered me a brand new MacBook Pro. Needless to say, I accepted. I will have to reinstall everything (and I had backups) but there was no guarantee all my info would still be on the first one. My only worry is that because I couldn't wipe the hd myself, all my passwords will be accessible to the techs and I REALLY don't want to go thru and change them all as it also affects my husband's passwords and he's very resistant to change. ;-) Anyway, I'd say the MacBook Pro is fairly delicate compared, at least, to my Toshiba notebooks from the past. Re: [CGUYS] Sicko -- discussion location (off topic)
alance things out. We do not like rationing and we will fight rationing at every turn. My wife's grandmother died of an aortic aneurysm. Diagnosed, but not treated, she was over 80. My grandmother died due to a failed hip operation, her third in two months and she was over 90! OK which one died where I guess it really doesn't matter which was where. My mother also died because of an aortic aneurysmdiagnosed late by incompetant dr.s here in the good old USA. She was diagnosed correctly , but too late, after my husband, a physician, made arrangements to get her moved from IL by ambulance to Indy so we could have someone we knew look at her. So, to get good treatment, she too had to travel hundreds of miles to a reputable medical area. And her sister,my aunt, died following hip surgery at age 80 and she DID have good care but she was OLD. And, medicare and her insurance did pay it. S*it happens! Being in the US is no guarantee of good care or a good outcome even if you can pay for it and we pay and pay and pay for the privilege of mediocre care. And as has been stated 45 million people can't afford any care at all. Shameful. I'd prefer to pay a slight increase in taxes if need be and do away with the outrageous insurance fees we pay. We'd come out ahead. Re: [CGUYS] Canada
I am not sure. When you talk about rationing it sounds like a bad thing. But in terms of dollars and cents the Canadian System has to make sure that the tax money is well spent. In the US the private sector has a lot of rationing by the insurance companies. And then there is the case of the ones who don´t have insurance and have to use the Emergency Rooms to have care when things go out of hand. Isn´t this a form of rationing? A perverse one? It absolutely is rationing.we just don't call it that. Depending on the procedure and your insurance company (if you even have one) you may or may not be allowed to have said procedure. It's up to, not your doctor , a medical professional, but your insurance company employee who was hired off the street. It happens way more than most people want to think. If you are a patient in an HMO where the dr. makes more money by NOT prescribing expensive tests or sending you to a specialist, you are rationed in your care. National health care is NOT socialist or socialized medicine. People with money can still go where they wish and pay the price. Even if you are using gov't paid care, you could still choose your dr. It depends on how it is set up. But, until a way is found to get insurance companies and profit out of the practice of medicine, I see no hope for us. Re: [CGUYS] Memory question.....Tom?
But, would the flash things running overnight on a Mozilla type browser cause OSX to close? Looks like there may be more than one thing amiss. Need to clear things out to get a better picture of what is causeing your CPU problem. This shutting down of OSX is happening EVERY night now but doesn't occur when I leave the same things running all day. Again this a.m. I had the transparent box telling me OSX had shut down and to turn off the computer. I don't know of anything that I've set to run over night. Do any of you have any idea what might be trying to run and is shutting me down? Re: [CGUYS] Memory question
Woke up this a.m. to find OSX had quit again. It seems to happen every night now. I don't have any backups running then. I do set the computer to sleep after about 1/2 hr. I did forget to restart it in safemode when I went to bed. Right now, with only mail running the CPU is running between 5% and 16% if I'm not typing. Paula -- do the open pages in Camino have Flash ads? Can you install a Flash blocker? Does that make a difference? Yes, two of them have flash ads. I'll see if Safari can turn those off. Interestingly, Macworld weekly email newsletter just came in with an article on tracking down processor hogs. It didn't tell me anything new tho...and nothing to indicate why I keep shutting down. Even my Windows machine didn't blue screen this often! I'll keep working on this tho. Re: [CGUYS] Memory question
Paula, lose the widgets. Set up a larger swap file for Photoshop. Mine's on a separate drive [it's in the prefs somewhere; in my ps you can select up to 4 swap disks]. Does Camino have a memory leak like other Moz browsers? I use some beta versions just so I can have a debug menu. Can you add more RAM? Hi, Betty. I did turn off the widgets. got up this a.m. and OSX had shut down on me again. But, right now...even with my widgets running, the cpu is going up and down between 6% and 25%. The culprit with that, at least, seems to have been Camino. I switched to Safari instead. I don't like it much but will get used to it. I'm maxed on RAM with 2.5 gb. I don't really understand how Mac handles ram tho. It always looks like I'm almost out of it and am using a lot of virtual rameven when I'm not running much. I don't know what caused it to shut down last night but I did do a screen shot of the report on it. It can be seen here: http:// homepage.mac.com/raven880/FileSharing1.html I will reboot in safe mode again tonight and see what happens. Last night I was booted up normally tho I had turned off all the widgets and extra programs. re: my sig line..It's a vain attempt to convince myself I am NOT getting old. Re: [CGUYS] Memory question
If I were you I'd look closer at each CPU hog and see what it's doing or if there are settings you could change to stop this behavior. For example, there are certainly setting in Camino you could alter, but I'd start by closing o Thanks, Jordman. I've dumped Camino as it seemed to have a real problem using resources. I can keep the same tabs open with Safari and use far less CPU time. But I've been watching the monitor and am baffled by one thing. When it shows, say User29%, System 14%, when I look up at the individual processes, they don't seem to add up to that much. Most of them say 0.00 or 0.10...all very low except for whichever program I am actively using like Mail right now is 10% and a few others around 5%. And none of it accounts for OSX suddenly quitting. Re: [CGUYS] Background programs running
One thing I've noticed on my computer is that a lot of programs are running in the background, some of which do not need to be running. Question...can you direct me to a good source so I can figure out what some of these things are and put an end to the things that do not need to run? Is there a good program (inexpensive or free) that can make the adjustments and close down those things which do not need to be ru I'd like to know that for OSX. I can turn them off temporarily with Activity Monitor but they start up again when I reboot. ANd I have some things that I installed that aren't in Applications folder so I can't get rid of them. How do I find those? I installed a MailTags app that opens when I open Mail. I tried it, don't need it but can't get rid of it. Re: [CGUYS] Memory question
Now I'm starting to think you are pulling my leg. Do you routinely drive your car through ditches and then complain about the rough ride? I'm chuckling here. g I do run my truck thru ditches from time to time but I don't complain. I do expect it to perform as it was intended. ;-) Yes, I expect my machines to run whatever software is made for them. Or was it the rollerball that made you keel over? LOL I left it open overnight with Lightroom with several hundred thumbnails open in the library, Photoshop CS2 with 2 large photo files open, mail, Camino with 8 tabs, Palm Desktop,(thought it might be the problem) , system preferences, dashboard with several widgets and iTunes all running. It's still working fine, almost briskly , this a.m. The CPU load is around 45-54% most of the time. You said that was too high. With so many big programs running at once, what would you consider normal for the CPU? If the Logitech multibutton rollerball is the issue.seems I've heard of problems in the past with Logitech drivers..do you or anyone have a suggestion for a mouse/rollerball that is more stable and has programable buttons. I use those constantly instead of reaching for the keyboard to do things. Well that explains the high load. Maybe you should try your streaming with iTunes? I did. No sound. iTunes wouldn't play anything. At that point it was doing a disk repair and it lools like you really needed it. I had already run disk repair a few days ago and after that, it said it was ok. As my dropped laptop has a non-functioning screen now..things fall apart in bunches, it seems.I have to go to the Apple Store today anyway. I'll look for a new mouse because I have a feeling it is the rollerball that has caused my problems. First tho I'll reboot normally, with the external speakers still unplugged, and see if the flakiness returns. Re: [CGUYS] CPU load question
Tony B said: but on any computer that simply has graphics programs open, your idling load should be close to 0% CPU. Idle priority tasks like indexing, defragging, or malware scans will raise this, but should be obvious because of the disk activity. It could also be malware activity like a trojan. I'd be suspicious if it wasn't back to 0% after idling I wasn't aware of trojan's on Macs??? I don't have any virus/trojan scanning software on here so have no idea if I have one. What is recommended for checking for trojans on Macs? After idling overnight Activity Monitor still showed 45% but I do have widgets that update regularly like the weather map and a live camera. But on the monitor, those aren't using any of the cpu % of any consequence. Mike said: Just opening the viewer to see the load makes the load go upif she opens it, looks real quick and closes it, she'd see that kind of load every time. Might want to leave the window open and see what happens as you stare at it (watch the grass grow). I did have the viewer open to watch it and it rarely dropped below 40%. I have rebooted normally (not in safe mode) so my Logitech rollerball is working as is my internal speaker. I'm still, for now, running at45-50% most of the time unless I'm actually doing something on here. I don't have Photoshop or Lightroom open. I'll open those and see what happens. Is there a way to tell if it is the CPU having problems or the RAM? Ok, all the same things are now running..plus drivers for Logitech, Huey monitor, sounds, etc that didnt' run in safe mode. It's varying between 47% and 58%. Activity Monitor says it is around 28-40% User and 10-28% System with some variations higher and lower. Camino is taking by far the greatest amount of time..25% give or take. I've used Firefox and Safari before but found the same issue with each of them and I don't care for either of them but will dump Camino if it is the culprit. I'm going to leave now to go get my laptop looked at and see how this one is running when I get back. Thanks everyone for your interest in this problem. Re: [CGUYS] Memory question
What happens when you run from a safe boot (Shift key down on Mac's startup)? Well, initially it wouldn't start up in safe mode. It hung at the white screen with the apple logo and the spinning dial. So I shut it down after about 5 mins and started again. It took almost 5 min. but did finally start up. I have Camino open with all the tabs I usually have open(10 tabs) , mail, Windows media player because I wanted to listen to Mike Malloy show but...sadly, I have no sounds. I unplugged my external speakers thinking that I could use the built in speaker but no go. so Im not going to run in safe mode for long. Too quiet around here. Also have Photoshop CS2 with 2 photos open and iTunes. iTunes won't play either since I have no sound. It doesn't even try to play a song. And all of my widgets are running as usual. The cpu seems to vary between about 44% to around 58% most of the time with spikes up to 100%. I'm not sure how long I need to run on this to see if Camino is going to slow it down but will leave it running overnight with all this stuff open. I really miss having my special buttons on my Logitech rollerball! When you get used to using your thumb to change things with a click or do a screen shot with a click, the basic two buttons feel crippled. One thing that happened when trying to boot into safe mode the first time...when it got hung up a loud whirring sound started that sounded like a very loud fan blowing. I have heard this before when OSX decided to quit. Not every time but enough times that I'm aware of it. I have no idea if it's anything unusual or not. And to make things a bit worse.one of my dogs ran by very fast and bumped into the small table that my Macbook Pro is sitting on and knocked it off. It fell flat on it's top with a very loud bang. I have not had the courage to start it upI might have to kill the dog. JUST KIDDING! I have 7 dogs and am obviously an animal lover. Thanks Tom for your suggestions and encouragement. Wish you were able to make housecalls in Indy. Re: [CGUYS] Comcast New Legal Policy / Co-incidental Loss of Service? Restored
Service restored. Problem was Comcast had intentionally disconnected me from the pole according to the tech that arrived promptly at 5 pm for his 11 to 2 pm appointment window. I recall a saying something like Never attribute something to malice when mere incompatence will suffice. They are giving me a big $20.00 credit for the inconvenience. I opted out last night. [CGUYS] Memory question
My iMac G5 iSite has been having frequent blue screen equivalents.the transparent gray box that tells me OSX has quit and I have to shut down. I thought I had found the problem when I unplugged 2 of the 4 external hd's I have on it. But I got up this a.m. to a new error msg. Instead of the gray box there were black lines with white text coming across from the upper left corner. Most of the message meant nothing to me but there was one line that seemed to indicate a memory failure. Is there a way to test the memory on a Mac without having to buy new memory and install it, only to find that wasn't the problem? When watching my system stat monitors, I see that the cpu is frequently at 100%+ usage (and programs are CRAWLING). I suppose there could be a hard drive problem. Since it was getting full, I have moved iTunes and Photos to an external drive so I could free up space on the main hd, thinking that OSX needed empty space to use as memory??? Is this wrong? But it still shuts down on me. This usually occurs over night when it's been sitting but was supposed to go to sleep and didn't. Occasionally it happens when I'm working on it. Also, the longer it's on (and Camino, especially, has been running with multiple tabs for a long time), the more likely the cpu is to be running at 90-100%. If I replace this iMac with a MacPro tower, my husband would like this machine but I don't want to give him one that is unreliable as he is FAR more easily frustrated than I am!!;-) So, I still need to figure out what my problem is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!! [CGUYS] MacPro question
I'm considering replacing my iMac with a MacPro. I've found that I can get more RAM for less thru Crucial. The harddrive prices for the empty bays from Apple seem awfully high priced. Can I get off the shelf internal harddrives to put in it and is it hard to set up so the computer finds them? I've never replaced a hard drive myself. Re: [CGUYS] storing CD's in jewel boxes
keep everything in the three ring binder type cd cases. I have too many to want to put them all in jewel cases THis is what I do as well..and the same for DVD movies. I store all the plastic cd boxes in a box in the basement..tho I'm not sure why. I just keep everything I guess. I have old computers down there too that are of no use but , well, you just never know. g Paula IN/USA Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO what a ride! Another one to give a listen to is the Cranky Geeks with John C Dvorak I like Cranky Geeks, too, but it doesn't offer help with problems. Leo Leporte has an amazing tool working for him in his radio show- The chat room that ru I guess I'll put in a plug for Leo's podcasts too. I listen to all of them and they are numerous but I always find some helpful hint or answer to a problem I'm having in nearly every podcast. The Security Now podcast is very technical and often over my head but by listening to it every week, I've learned a lot. I can highly recommend those podcasts. Re: [CGUYS] digital pics
I don't know her, but in general these are often also some of the worst photographers - taking 100 pics and keeping all 100 of them! Of course, with digital cameras it's sometimes advisable to overshoot, but if I can't delete 90% of the pics I take I feel I'm doing something wrong. I guess I'm one of those worst photographers.with 4 different cameras that go everywhere with me so that I can get just the right shots which is often dependent on the abilities of a particular camera. I KEEP 90% of them because even the bad ones can often be used for composites, backgrounds...examples of what went wrong, etc. I'm not a professional photographer but am a good one so not everyone who keeps all their photos is a bad photographer. [CGUYS] Need to find computer help in INdy
My son has been trying to set up a wireless network in his homeand I've tried to help him too. We've run the set up several times and get connected just fine but once the computers are turned off or the top is put down and it sleeps, they can't get it to reconnect. But they are easily connected to a neighbors wireless! The neighbor's isn't secured and theirs is.if they can stay on it...so they prefer to use their own. We've both exhausted our limited knowledge of these things and need to call in a pro. Do any of you know of reliable computer help in the Indianapolis, IN area? He's on a pc with WinXP and we did turn off Windows firewall but it made no difference. His connection is thru their phone linesnot dial upsome kind of modem that the wireless router plugs into. It should not have been that hard! Thanks guys. Re: [CGUYS] How do I compress MPG files
Michael Lewis said I'll let Paula tell more about the process as well as provide the link to the movie she worked on. :) Thanks to Michael and Apples discussion groups, I was able to find the problem with the sound on my video file. My camera is not a real digital video camerait was a Sony H5 photo camera so iMovie was unable to recognize the sound. The free MPEG-Streamclip software did the trick and was very easy to use...especially with Michael's step- by-step web page. The quality after compression was decent. The video clip is of a band called Cadillac Angels out of CA. They are usually labeled as rockabilly but I call it just good old- fashioned Rock and Roll ala Buddy Holly. Yeah, I know. I'm dating myself. g But they're excellent muscians and put on a very entertaining and foot-stomping performance with the lead guitarist, Tony Balbinot, actually going outside the bar to perform on the street for passers-by. I'm not affiliated with the band in any wayjust think their fabulous entertainment. My husband and I came across them by accident when visiting Jerome, Arizona. They perform frequently at the Spirit Room bar, a popular gathering place for the Harley Davidson crowd on weekends. Here's the link to one of the videos. Im putting a couple more up later today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe3_CL8K8tc Thanks everyone for all your help. Re: [CGUYS] How do I compress MPG files
Paula -- I think Handbrake is mainly a program for work with DVDs. I admit I haven't looked at it very closely, so my initial look could be fooling me. However, you should have everything you need on your Mac if you have iMovie or have purchased Quicktime Pro. Try what I've created at the following link and see if it's helpful: http://web.mac.com/offbalance/iWeb/Off%20Balance%20Stuph/Movie% 20Compression/Movie%20Compression.html Michael, I used iMovie and imported my mpg movie into it with no problem and it plays but the sound is missing. I checked all my volume controls and they are on. If I play the mpg file on it's own, the sound is there. What am I missing? The video is pointless without the sound. I took the video with a sony H5 camera if that makes any difference. I went ahead and did the compression, following your instructions and it looked great but..no sound. Any more ideas? Thank you so much for helping me learn this. spent a couple hours at command line trying to make the folder visible. Then I did the simple, dumb thing: ran disk utility. That fixed everything. Thanks, Tom. Worth a try. [CGUYS] Macs don't break ...was (Re: [CGUYS] Tinkerers in the treehouse)
betty said: Macs last a long time. They don't break, generally. Yeah, well, maybe. Unless Apple breaks it for you. I updated my iMac G5 with the latest security updates and now EVERYTHING that needs to be transferred to or from it via USB connection (memory cards, podcasts from itunes to iPod, backups to ext. drives) takes HOURS to transfer and one backup drive doesn't even mount. Visits to the discussion groups at Apple haven't helped. Only one person with suggestionsreinstall the 10.9 combo updater.has offered help and it didn't work. He now suggests clearing the PRAM but I'm worried about doing it and finding that it won't boot at all. It will take me days at this rate to back everything up since just one MS of pics can take 6-8 hrs to transfer. I've been putting the pics on my MacBook Pro and transferring over the network and that works fine but it's extra steps..and doens't solve the problem of updating the iPod since all my music, tv and podcasts are on the iMac. Needless to say, I won't be applying those security updates to my laptop. Shades of Bill Gates! Re: [CGUYS] Macs don't break ...
Did you repair permissions before and after installing the update? Did you run Yasu first? Did you back up your drives? Not before but after reinstalling the 10.9 update I repaired permissions. Not after installing those security fixes tho. I have most stuff backed up. It will take hours or days to back up any further to the external drives since anything going thru USB is a drop at a time. But I think I can back up over my network to my laptop so will do that next. I've found that MacFixit is one of the best resources for troubleshooting Macs. Also, I rarely apply an update before searching for possible conflicts and problems first. I haven't updated from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 yet; this version works perfectly well. I don't like to add software, even security updates, without waiting for error reports, http://macfixit.com/, http://www.macfixit.com/article.php? story=20070423093555664. YeaI usually do that too. But, was in a hurry and having never had a problem with updates, I just did it. Won't make that mistake again. Yes you can clear the PRAM [or whatever it's called on new Macs] without worrying. I don't think that will make a difference but I'll try it. The hardware didn't break did it? No. I moved the card readers to my laptop and they work just fine. So does my iPod. I guess if I can't get this machine to work again for this type of stuff I'll have to start downloading all my podcasts to my laptop. But tv shows that I get are set to this machine and I can't move them. I almost wish mine would so I could justify buying another new Mac. I keep downloading the nightly builds for Mozilla which claims, ...Mozilla might crash on startup. It might delete all your files and cause your computer to burst into flames... but all I get is new software bugs. Betty When I decide it's time for a new one.and IF I can afford it .I see if one of my kids or a friend is interested in the one being retired. Right now my husband is trying s hard to rationalize buying a macbook for himself. His Toshiba laptop works fine except it suddenly stopped connecting to the network. He doesn't really need it to connect but.he's thinking it might be a good enough excuse to buy that macbook. g Paula IN/USA Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO what a ride! [CGUYS] How do I compress MPG files
While in Jerome,AZ I took some video of a band that I want to upload to YouTube. My MPG file is 500mb but Youtube limits you to 100 mb. How do I go about compressing the video so that it's small enough to upload? I'm on either an iMac G5 and I do have GarageBand if that worksor a MacBook Pro laptop.
