Please see the [project documentation](https://github.com/darktable-org/dtdocs#contributing) for more information on how to contribute._ ## The Big Ones The following is a summary of the main features added to darktable 4.6. Please see the user manual for more details of the individual changes (where available). - Editing history is now periodically auto-saved (every 10 seconds) while editing images in the darkroom view. The auto-save interval can be changed (via a preference) or auto-save can be disabled entirely (by setting the interval to 0). - A new processing module _rgb primaries_ has been added. This module can be used for delicate color corrections as well as creative color grading. It allows the red, green and blue primary colors to be moved around using "hue" and "purity" controls. The underlying pixel operation is essentially the same as channel mixing. - In addition, the _sigmoid_ module now includes a new _primaries_ section, which can be used to gracefully handle difficult lighting situations (e.g. LEDs) and tune the overall look of the image. Modifying these parameters can provide pleasing sunsets, improved skin tones etc. This feature can only be used with sigmoid's per-channel mode and is loosely based on ideas from Troy Sobotka's [AgX](https://github.com/sobotka/AgX-S2O3) and related work in the [Blender community](https://blenderartists.org/t/feedback-development-filmic-baby-step-to-a-v2/1361663 ). The included "smooth" preset should provide a good starting point for further corrections using this feature. - When working with the liquify and retouch modules, the full uncropped image is now always shown, with any crop indicated by displaying an overlaid rectangle. This allows for cropped-out parts of the image to be used without having to first disable the crop module and re-enable it when finished. - When panning or zooming in the darkroom view, a low resolution placeholder used to be shown until the image was fully recalculated for the newly-visible region. Now, if any part of the previous view is still visible, that part will be immediately shown in high quality, with only the remainder of the image being temporarily shown in low quality until the pipe has finished. This has been achieved as part of a complete reworking of the darkroom image display, which has also removed some annoying jumps when replacing the low resolution placeholder with recalculated image data, or when switching between full and cropped view (when the crop, retouch or liquify modules are (un)focused). ## Performance Improvements - OpenCL is now initialized in the background immediately after launching the darktable UI, with progress indicated by a series of toast messages. Previously, this was done before the main UI was launched, which could lead to significant delays (sometimes more than a minute) between the user opening darktable and anything appearing on-screen, making it appear as though darktable had failed to

Re: [darktable-user] workflow hints
Germano, I'd like to suggest that you adopt a storage scheme to help with your confusion. Without knowing the specifics of your current scheme, I'll use my own as an example. When I have shot a job, I create a new folder that I'll call "20230614 - Germano". Under that folder, I create the following folders from my template: 0 - JPG 0 - RAW 1 0 - RAW 2 1 - Stacked 2 - DeNoise 3 - Sharpen 4 - HDR 5 - Edits 6 - Finals 7 - Video. The numbers I chose allow me to keep my order of processing consistent. I'll later delete folders that I didn't actually use. Photos right out of the camera go into the zero-level folders as appropriate. Typically, I shoot RAW only, and send duplicates of any given image to both cards simultaneously (belt-and-suspenders approach). If I choose to shoot both JPG and RAW, the JPGs go into the appropriate folder. I also create two additional folders at the root level: 1 - New Imports 2 - Exports Under Exports, I create the following structure: 1 - Stacked 2 - DeNoise 3 - Sharpen 4 - HDR 5 - darktable 6 - RE (Real Estate - special requirements for image dimensions and file size) 7 - Panorama If I'm going to stack images, that happens first, with the stacked image being exported to 2 - Exports, 1 - Stacked. You get the idea. Exports from any processing application go to the 2 - Exports folder appropriate to the job being done. The exported files are subsequently moved to the Date - Job folder as appropriate before the next step in processing. The last step in processing is darktable. Files are exported from darktable, sized as required by the client. I hope this is clear and provides you some guidance. If not, feel free to ask your questions. In checking today, the System Monitor (as suggested) showed only the error message window as shown below. There were no darktable-related processes running (which I anticipated, given that darktable refused to start). I ran the ps tool that Remco suggested, and got the same results. I could find NO lock files related to darktable anywhere on the system; neither data.db.lock nor library.db.lock (p. 287 in The Fine Manual). What to do now? I moved data.db and library.db to the desktop. Lo and behold, darktable started normally. I have to presume that one or the other were corrupted, so both got deleted. In any case, darktable is once again up and running. I am looking forward to v4.2.0 popping out of the chute in the very near future. Thanks to Butch and Remco for their suggestions. [darktable-user] Question regarding .svg watermarks comparing Windows and Ubuntu Linux
Question: I have some .svg watermark files that were generated in Inkscape on the Windows machines. They work superbly when applied using darktable on the Windows machines. When I copy those same .svg files to the Linux machine and put them in the correct place, then open them using the Inkscape instance on the Linux machine, there is no apparent difference, compared to the same files opened in Inkscape on the Windows machines. That said, when I apply the .svg file watermarks to any image using darktable on the Linux machine, the graphic "signature" is represented perfectly, but the text portion is significantly shrunk side-to-side, but only when applied using darktable. Anybody have ideas regarding the issue? Are there any fonts that do NOT work right when migrated from Windows to Linux? Inquiring minds want to know... Bruce, I primarily use a Windoze machine on which the times match the times on the camera body, including time zone. No problem with darktable keeping the time straight. The same photos pulled into a Ubuntu Linux machine again show the same time. I have to wonder if you have the right time zone set into your camera and both Windoze and Linux Mint? Thing is, because I dual boot with windoze 10, I do recall that I had to do some strange offset thing in linux because windoze can't handle time zones the way linux does. I'd have to go and look up what it was that I had to do to get both windoze and linux to display the correct time zone, but I vaguely recall it required allowing windoze to retrieve the time zone info from BIOS, and then applying some kind of offset in linux to compensate. Just took a photo at 2022-01-19 15:42 EST. My computer displayed it as 10:42, not 15:42. Timezone info is not recorded with the file time stamp. So host computer has to assume UTC for the timestamps. Probably the only reasonable assumption for external file systems that were created elsewhere. The file *in the camera file system* is given in local camera time. It would be preferable to be in UTC. The following is on the camera file system, before copying to computer: > nholtz@photos:176ND850$ pwd > /media/nholtz/NIKON D850/DCIM/176ND850 > nholtz@photos:176ND850$ ls -l > total 25152 > -rwxr-xr-x 1 nholtz nholtz 53141230 Jan 19 10:42 D85_1332.NEF* The above shows that 15:42 was recorded, but was displayed as 10:42 because my computer is also set to UTC-5. It has been adjusted for display in that timezone. And more, telling the ls command to assume UTC time zone: > nholtz@photos:176ND850$ TZ=UTC ls --full-time > total 25152 > -rwxr-xr-x 1 nholtz nholtz 53141230 2022-01-19 15:42:08.91000 + D85_1332.NEF* > nholtz@photos:176ND850$ We are back to the 15:42, with UTC offset of , as set by the camera. Summary: My camera (Nikon) just stamps the files with whatever local time you have set, ignoring timezone. Then the computer you copy the file to applies its timezone info when it displays the times. So if your time is set 'correctly' in the camera (ignoring timezone), the timezone must be incorrect on the computer. I concur that this is one option. I Windows, it's right-click, then open with darktable (Ubuntu is very similar). It's just more awkward. [darktable-user] Question regarding v3.4 and v3.6 file importing
I tend to think that perhaps I'm overthinking this, but here's the question: In v3.4, I could "import" an "image" or a "folder" (section 2.3.1 of The Fine Manual for v 3.4). Now that v3.6 has been released, I can "import" then "add to library" or "copy & import", per section 1.4.1 of The New Fine Manual. It almost seems that these changes are purely verbiage, not unlike a used car salesman calling a "pig" a "cochon" to be able to double the sale price. Frankly, I prefer to be able to open a single image the way I did in v3.4 to the new way of opening a library, then a folder, then an image as in v3.6. It seems to me that if my perception is correct, darktable is sliding too close to things I detest about Lightroom. If my perception is wrong, I'm very open to seeing it differently, but this is what I see right now. Thoughts? Willy Williams -- "You don't take a photograph. The new module allows you to see thumbnails of your images before import and makes it easier to handle multiple import tasks. The same dialog is now used for importing from disk, card or camera. When importing "in-place", images that are already present in darktable are flagged and can be automatically excluded from the import. Importing from a local drive won't use gphoto and so should work more reliably on Windows. - A vector-scope is added to complement the current histogram, waveform and parade views. - A new default demosaic algorithm (RCD) has been introduced, which should provide better quality than the current default (PPG) without the long run- times of AMaZE. the order of the demosaic algorithms has also been adjusted for clarity. - Support for "dual demosaic" has also been added, allowing you to combine "RCD + VNG4" and "AMaZE + VNG4" for bayer sensors, for xtrans sensors there is "Markesteijn 3-pass + VNG". This allows you to use an algorithm better resolving fine detail and another one delivering smoother output depending on local image content. - You can now create an opacity mask based on the sharpness of the image. This uses a similar algorithm to that used in dual demosaic. - Drawn shapes are drawn on the original RAW image and then distorted through the pixelpipe. This previously led to, for example, circles becoming ellipses (due to lens distortion) after being placed on the image. All drawn shapes can now be pre-visualized and moved prior to placement, with full deformation applied. This makes the editing of masks easier fully WYSIWYG. - A new Color Balance RGB module has been added. This can be used as a one stop module for all color grading work. - A new censorize module has been added. This allows you to hide parts of the image by adding a blur/pixelization. - A new crop module has been added. This new module has been added late in the pixelpipe and makes it possible to use cropped parts of the image for source spots in the retouch module, for example. - A new section has been added to the color calibration module to allow you to calibrate colors using a color checker chart. - The map module has been enhanced in a number of ways: - When importing a GPX the trace can be displayed. - Location can be set using polygons and directly created from information reported by Open Street Map. As a reminder, all locations create tags automatically for images placed into the area. - The basic adjustments module has been replaced with the quick access panel, which can be used to group controls from multiple different modules in one place. Currently, only non-graphical controls (sliders, comboboxes etc.) can be used. ## Other New Features And Changes - The various lighttable modes can now be accessed via clear and descriptive icons at the bottom of the screen. These should be easier to use than the existing drop-down selection. - The export module is now also accessible on the left-hand panel of the darkroom view. - The mix control in the contrast equalizer module is now retained as module parameter. Re: [darktable-user] Again... SD-Card import on Win10
I just tried importing from an SDXC card in a USB plug-in card reader. It works quite well. Suggest that you might want to try it again. As a routine thing, I prefer to NOT do that since I can connect a USB cable to my camera and to the computer (both Win 10 and Linux) and import directly, eliminating the middleman. As I've already learned, there should be a button in the import-dialogue. But it doesn't appear here. I already tried the "Zadig" USB drivers, but none of them worked and additionally messed up my USB ports completely so I had to revert to a system restore point. Anyone knows how to fix this? Is it a problem of my cardreader? Or a problem with Windows? Or maybe it's a dt bug? At the begin of the strip, a single left-click into the empty space does it. My workflow: Filter "collext images" / "narrow down search" / "metadata - geotagging" / "not tagged" reduces the strip to a "To Do-List" and pics get unselected automaticly when they got a position. That should indeed be the case: your *local* darktablerc (see below) is read on startup, and the values there are used and shown in the Preferences dialog. Some changes can only be applied on start-up, so those require a restart to be visible. But they are still stored internally and written back to darktablerc. But keep in mind that there are *two* versions of darktablerc: - a global one, used on first start, and containing default values. Users normally cannot write to this file. - a local one, written when you exit darktable and used on subsequent runs. So in effect, the local darktablerc overrules the global darktablerc. Even more interesting! I'm on Windows 10 (2 machines), with levels set to "3" in preferences, yet darktablerc still shows levels set to "1". Re: [darktable-user] Importing from camera
On reflection, I have the option in the camera to select either "PC Storage" or "PC Tether" when I connect the body to the computer, so I suspect that the discrepancy has more to do with the Lumix firmware and how it has been written to resemble a computer storage device as opposed to being a camera mass storage device. Re: [darktable-user] Importing from camera
Another really good card reader comes from Anker - https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Portable-Reader-RS-MMC-Micro/dp/B006T9B6R2/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3BXI9II028H6I=1=anker+sd+card+reader+usb+3.0=1609611450=anker+sd+card+reader%2Caps%2C238=8-3. That said, my G9 has a USB3.0 port on it, so cabling it to one of the USB 3.0 ports on my laptop is every bit as fast as, if not faster than using the external card reader, and negates the need to extract the cards from the camera and replace them later. Doing so does not transfer the images to the darktable database, but does make the files available to be imported when darktable is opened and the folders are accessed. Willy Williams * On 1/2/2021 at 13:05, DougC wrote: I agree. Also, a high quality SD card reader can be significantly faster (10x or more) than a cheaper one. It is far slower and less safe than doing it by reading the card from a card reader. Safe : if the card falls on to the ground, it will not be the same as if it were the camera. Slower : I admit this is based upon my own observations with Nikon 1 v1, D700 and D4s conneted either via usb2 or usb3. Plus, if I do not mistake, this just does import the pictures into the database, so they will not be available anymore after unplugging the camera. I think, together with others on this list, that the best is to copy the files from the card to the disk, and then import them. There are many tools that allow organizing while copying, most of them have been listed in previous posts. darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.org darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.org
Re: [darktable-user] Importing from camera
You are mostly correct, Kofa. TFM says, "When a camera is detected, it will show up in the device panel after pressing “scan for devices”. If you hover your mouse over the camera tab label, a tooltip will pop up with information about the camera (model, firmware version etc.)." With my own Lumix G9 camera, that apparently is not the case as the "scan for devices" button does not appear. The G9 appears to the computer as just another pair of file folders (JPGs and RAW files), once I tell the G9 to appear as a storage device, not a tethered camera. So far, the G9 is not recognized by darktable for tethering. Willy Williams -- "You don't take a picture. Re: [darktable-user] Getting machine JPG colours in RAW editing
If you're going to do a serious test, you might want to consider using a standard ColorChecker card (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ColorChecker) to ensure that the colors you perceive are close to a known industry standard. Willy -- "You don't take a picture. You ask quietly and humbly to borrow it." - Unknown -- On 12/25/20 5:58 PM, Terry Pinfold wrote: Hi Germano, thanks for your considered replies. I concede your point when you said "because for example I may want to just adjust the exposure and few other things, by using the colours already generated by the camera". I decided to do a test. I found an image of a kangaroo (I am Australian) where I had both a JPG and NEF file. I opened the JPG in DT and did a snapshot of the image to use as a comparison for working the RAW file. I then opened the RAW file and activated the snapshot from the JPG. The RAW file was a little darker and duller. I easily corrected this using the exposure module and the white and black relative exposure sliders in filmic. The image looked nearly identical to the jpg except for one patch of fur on the kangaroo which didn't match perfectly in color. Initially I was not sure how I could fix this because when I tried whitebalance the global shift of colours just made it worse. Then I went to the color zones module and used the eyedropper to identify the color of the patch of fur that was giving me problems. In the saturation tab I started raising the saturation of this region and the final result was as identical as I would ever hope to achieve. So my conclusion is that yes I can achieve an all but identical image from a RAW nef file and a JPG image rapidly in DT. I feel the issue is that Nikon and other camera manufacturers apply unique corrections to the JPG based upon many factors including what picture style you have selected in the camera. For instance, if landscape is selected in the camera then Nikon pumps the blues and greens up a bit. I actually have made a preset in color zones module to enhance greens in landscapes. I also have another to reduce excessive red in skin tones. I guess these are me making my own picture styles in DT. Take home message is try using the snapshot feature of darktable as a reference for setting the RAW file if you want to match the camera JPG. I admit when I edit images I do not care about the camera JPG, but feel one of the biggest challenges when first learning to edit your own RAW files is to get a result as good as the camera's JPG, let alone better. After all Canon, Nikon, Olympus and all the other manufacturers have invested a lot of resources and expertise into coming up with the 'secret recipes' to produce these JPGs in an attempt to make their cameras the best on the market. Part of the logo is in fact curves, and does not vary, regardless of the operating system, but two parts of the overall logo (used in differing circumstances) are text, and one of those parts DOES change due to the kerning not present in Linux. Admin rights (aka "root") are required to modify them, but this isn't usually necessary because typically there will be a corresponding location for *user* resources within your own home directory. In the case of darktable, essentially everything is in your $HOME/.config/darktable directory (but sometimes the $HOME/.local/share directory is used by applications for things that aren't strictly "configuration"). How does one unlock that structure? I'm a Linux Noob (must admit it). mkdir ~/.config/darktable/watermarks then add your watermark (svg) files there ps: there is no "Computer/usr/share/darktable/watermarks" but there is /usr/share/darktable/watermarks but that is for system files, not user files. and to help you prevent yourself from borking your system, a little research into linux filesystem structure will greatly benefit you. darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.org
