Go to Export settings, then global options and select set size, select
"in inch (for print)".  The default is "in pixels (for file)'.  When you
select "in inch (for print), delete the 300 and put in 72.

## The Big Ones

The following is a summary of the main features added to darktable
4.6. Please see the user manual for more details of the individual
changes (where available).

- Editing history is now periodically auto-saved (every 10 seconds)
while editing images in the darkroom view. The auto-save interval can
be changed (via a preference) or auto-save can be disabled entirely
(by setting the interval to 0).

- A new processing module _rgb primaries_ has been added. This module
can be used
for delicate color corrections as well as creative color grading.
It allows the red, green and blue primary colors to be moved around
   using "hue" and "purity" controls.

The underlying pixel operation is essentially the same as channel
mixing.

- In addition, the _sigmoid_ module now includes a new _primaries_
section,
which can be used to gracefully handle difficult lighting situations
(e.g. LEDs) and tune the overall look of the image. Modifying these
parameters can provide pleasing sunsets, improved skin tones etc.
This feature can only be used with sigmoid's per-channel mode and is
loosely based on ideas from Troy Sobotka's
[AgX](https://github.com/sobotka/AgX-S2O3)
and related work in the [Blender
community](https://blenderartists.org/t/feedback-development-filmic-baby-step-to-a-v2/1361663
).
The included "smooth" preset should provide a good starting point
for further corrections using this feature.

- When working with the liquify and retouch modules, the full uncropped
image is now always shown, with any crop indicated by displaying an
overlaid
rectangle. This allows for cropped-out parts of the image to be used
without
having to first disable the crop module and re-enable it when
finished.

- When panning or zooming in the darkroom view, a low resolution
placeholder
used to be shown until the image was fully recalculated for the
newly-visible
region. Now, if any part of the previous view is still visible, that
part will
be immediately shown in high quality, with only the remainder of the
image
being temporarily shown in low quality until the pipe has finished.

This has been achieved as part of a complete reworking of the
darkroom image
display, which has also removed some annoying jumps when
replacing the low resolution placeholder with recalculated image
data,
or when switching between full and cropped view
(when the crop, retouch or liquify modules are (un)focused).

## Performance Improvements

- OpenCL is now initialized in the background immediately after
launching
the darktable UI, with progress indicated by a series of toast
messages.
Previously, this was done before the main UI was launched, which
could lead to significant delays (sometimes more than a minute)
between
the user opening darktable and anything appearing on-screen, making
it appear as though darktable had failed to

Re: [darktable-user] workflow hints

2023-06-14 Thread Willy Williams

Germano,

I'd like to suggest that you adopt a storage scheme to help with
your confusion.  Without knowing the specifics of your current scheme,
I'll use my own as an example.  When I have shot a job, I create a new
folder that I'll call "20230614 - Germano".  Under that folder, I create
the following folders from my template:

    0 - JPG

    0 - RAW 1

    0 - RAW 2

    1 - Stacked

    2 - DeNoise

    3 - Sharpen

    4 - HDR

    5 - Edits

    6 - Finals

    7 - Video.

The numbers I chose allow me to keep my order of processing consistent.
I'll later delete folders that I didn't actually use.  Photos right out
of the camera go into the zero-level folders as appropriate.  Typically,
I shoot RAW only, and send duplicates of any given image to both cards
simultaneously (belt-and-suspenders approach).  If I choose to shoot
both JPG and RAW, the JPGs go into the appropriate folder.

I also create two additional folders at the root level:

    1 - New Imports

    2 - Exports

Under Exports, I create the following structure:

        1 - Stacked

        2 - DeNoise

        3 - Sharpen

        4 - HDR

        5 - darktable

6 - RE (Real Estate - special requirements for image dimensions
and file size)

        7 - Panorama

If I'm going to stack images, that happens first, with the stacked image
being exported to 2 - Exports, 1 - Stacked.  You get the idea.  Exports
from any processing application go to the 2 - Exports folder appropriate
to the job being done.  The exported files are subsequently moved to the
Date - Job folder as appropriate before the next step in processing.
The last step in processing is darktable. Files are exported from
darktable, sized as required by the client.

I hope this is clear and provides you some guidance.  If not, feel free
to ask your questions.

The above is true for all manner of "X", that is why you have these
basic rules for backup

1) the data shall always exist on three different physical file systems
2) The data shall always exist at two different geographical locations
3) new data shall never overwrite old data, subject to some reasonable
retention period.  This rule is critical.  A common problem is file
corruption.   You never want the problem where a corrupted version of a
file overwrite the backed up uncorrupted version.  You have to keep the
old copies of the files.  So re-used backup media is a bad ide.  Batter
to just write the changes to the media until the media is full. Keepingn
to overwriting the old data.

You can do this in lots of ways, the common  "build vs buy vs rent"
analysis can be applied.

The most common cause for data lost is no longer a failed disk.   The
most common is:
#1 Operator error, you delete a file and you don't notice this until
much later.
#2 loss of equipment, misplaced notebook, theft or fire, electric
surge,...

A really good offsite system s to setup a second NAS across town and let
then keep sysnc'd over the INternet.  Now you have second-by-second
backup.  Is the NAS uses a versioned filesystem then you have point in
time recovery.       You can buy the NAS, built is to rent space on some
company's NAS.

A lot depends on if the data is business critical or not.    Where I
used to work there where three offsite company own NAS systems.  Triple
redundant offsite is kind of nuts for most people but the data was
historic data from past space missions.

because if your place burns, the neighbours place will likely
burn too). Next backups backup to the disc at your place and
exchange it with the other one and backup again on this disc.
Some work with minimal cost. So you have 3 different media and 2

The above is true for all manner of "X", that is why you have these
basic rules for backup

1) the data shall always exist on three different physical file systems
2) The data shall always exist at two different geographical locations
3) new data shall never overwrite old data, subject to some reasonable
retention period.  This rule is critical.  A common problem is file
corruption.   You never want the problem where a corrupted version of
a file overwrite the backed up uncorrupted version.  You have to keep
the old copies of the files.  So re-used backup media is a bad ide.
Batter to just write the changes to the media until the media is full.
Keepingn to overwriting the old data.

You can do this in lots of ways, the common  "build vs buy vs rent"
analysis can be applied.

The most common cause for data lost is no longer a failed disk.   The
most common is:
#1 Operator error, you delete a file and you don't notice this until
much later.
#2 loss of equipment, misplaced notebook, theft or fire, electric
surge,...

A really good offsite system s to setup a second NAS across town and
let then keep sysnc'd over the INternet.  Now you have
second-by-second backup.  Is the NAS uses a versioned filesystem then
you have point in time recovery.       You can buy the NAS, built is
to rent space on some company's NAS.

A lot depends on if the data is business critical or not.    Where I
used to work there where three offsite company own NAS systems.
Triple redundant offsite is kind of nuts for most people but the data
was historic data from past space missions.

In checking today, the System Monitor (as suggested) showed only the
error message window as shown below.  There were no darktable-related
processes running (which I anticipated, given that darktable refused to
start).  I ran the ps tool that Remco suggested, and got the same
results.  I could find NO lock files related to darktable anywhere on
the system; neither data.db.lock nor library.db.lock (p. 287 in The Fine
Manual).  What to do now?  I moved data.db and library.db to the
desktop.  Lo and behold, darktable started normally.  I have to presume
that one or the other were corrupted, so both got deleted.  In any case,
darktable is once again up and running.  I am looking forward to v4.2.0
popping out of the chute in the very near future.

Thanks to Butch and Remco for their suggestions.

I am not a Mint user (I use Ubuntu), but you should have an
application named "System Monitor".  You need to open that and make
sure you are on the Processes tab.  If you see one called
'darktable', press End Process on the lower right border of the
System Monitor window, then press End Process on the pop-up.  Check
to make sure you do not have multiple darktable processes.

That "100%" is a view in which 1 image pixel corresponds to 1 screen pixel.

I don't think dt has an option to show the image at the actual print size:
there is not really an option to **set** the print size, so how can you
display at that size? Keep in mind that the whole notion of resolution in ppi
is not really relevant for digital image files, as they do not have an

Take screen sizes: screens with a native size of 1980×1080 pixels exist in
different physical sizes, an image of 1980×1080 pixels will display full

[darktable-user] Question regarding .svg watermarks comparing Windows and Ubuntu Linux

2022-02-28 Thread Willy Williams

Question:

I have some .svg watermark files that were generated in Inkscape on
the Windows machines.  They work superbly when applied using darktable
on the Windows machines.  When I copy those same .svg files to the Linux
machine and put them in the correct place, then open them using the
Inkscape instance on the Linux machine, there is no apparent difference,
compared to the same files opened in Inkscape on the Windows machines.
That said, when I apply the .svg file watermarks to any image using
darktable on the Linux machine, the graphic "signature" is represented
perfectly, but the text portion is significantly shrunk side-to-side,
but only when applied using darktable.  Anybody have ideas regarding the
issue? Are there any fonts that do NOT work right when migrated from
Windows to Linux?  Inquiring minds want to know...

Bruce, I primarily use a Windoze machine on which the times match the

Or is it a linux issue?
Thing is, because I dual  boot with windoze 10, I do recall that I had

time zones the way linux does. I'd have to go and look up what it was
that I had to do to get both windoze and linux to display the correct
time zone, but I vaguely recall it required allowing windoze to
retrieve the time zone info from BIOS, and then applying some kind of
offset in linux to compensate.
Whether any of that is related to this dt issue or not, I'm not sure.
Although I suspect not, based on your ls results.

To:

I have my camera (Nikon) set to EST (UTC-5).
Just took a photo at 2022-01-19 15:42 EST.

My computer displayed it as 10:42, not 15:42.

Timezone info is not recorded with the file time stamp.

So host computer has to assume UTC for the timestamps.
Probably the only reasonable assumption for external file systems
that were created elsewhere.

The file *in the camera file system* is given
in local camera time. It would be preferable to be in UTC.

The following is on the camera file system, before copying to computer:

> nholtz@photos:176ND850$ pwd
> /media/nholtz/NIKON D850/DCIM/176ND850
> nholtz@photos:176ND850$ ls -l
> total 25152
> -rwxr-xr-x 1 nholtz nholtz 53141230 Jan 19 10:42 D85_1332.NEF*

The above shows that 15:42 was recorded, but was displayed as 10:42
because my computer is also set to UTC-5.

A little more evidence:

> nholtz@photos:176ND850$ ls --full-time
> total 25152
> -rwxr-xr-x 1 nholtz nholtz 53141230 2022-01-19 10:42:08.91000
-0500 D85_1332.NEF*

The '-0500' is the timezone in which to interpret the 10:42 time.
It has been adjusted for display in that timezone.

And more, telling the ls command to assume UTC time zone:

> nholtz@photos:176ND850$ TZ=UTC ls --full-time
> total 25152
> -rwxr-xr-x 1 nholtz nholtz 53141230 2022-01-19 15:42:08.91000
+ D85_1332.NEF*

> nholtz@photos:176ND850$

We are back to the 15:42, with UTC offset of , as set by the camera.

Summary:  My camera (Nikon) just stamps the files with whatever local
time you have set, ignoring timezone.  Then the computer you copy the
file to applies its timezone info when it displays the times. So if
your time is set 'correctly' in the camera (ignoring timezone), the
timezone must be incorrect on the computer.

Sadly, the new paradigm is a huge failure in my workflow, not to mention
being a general PITA.  That said, I'd like to request that there be an
option in preferences - lighttable to choose the import methodology
desired.  Options could be called "file, folder" and "add to library,
copy & import".  This has a precedent under preferences - processing in
which we can choose to auto-apply pixel workflow defaults, with
"scene-referred", "display-referred" and "none" being the available
choices.

Thanks for considering this as an option for the next release of darktable.

I, too, find the separation of crop, rotate and perspective rather
difficult to justify.  From my perspective of doing architectural and
real estate photography, I'd prefer to have them all in a single module,
not separated by retouch and exposure in the v3.0 RAW module order.

Hi y’all,

I took some images in black and white. When I open the folder in
Lighttable, that’s visible. But when I want to inspect them
individually in Darkroom, I’m seeing full colour. I clicked on all
items in the history stack, but they show colour too.

Of course I can edit them and make ‘m B, but I guess an initial
output of what my raw files took in B should be somewhere... but
where do I find that?

I’m working on a Windows 10 64 bit laptop.

I hope you can help me out, obtaining the output the way I saw it when
taking the picture.

Kind regards,

After you move the images to another location - right click on the film

Also - if you work out of a shared disk (even an USB connected to a

I concur that this is one option.  I Windows, it's right-click, then

I, too, miss the ease of just opening a single image as I could in prior

can "import" then "add to library" or "copy & import", per section 1.4.1
of The New Fine Manual.  It almost seems that these changes are purely
verbiage, not unlike a used car salesman calling a "pig" a "cochon" to
be able to double the sale price.  Frankly, I prefer to be able to open
a single image the way I did in v3.4 to the new way of opening a
library, then a folder, then an image as in v3.6.  It seems to me that
if my perception is correct, darktable is sliding too close to things I
detest about Lightroom.  If my perception is wrong, I'm very open to
seeing it differently, but this is what I see right now. Thoughts?

*full* raw sample set for your camera under CC0 license!

- Almost 2680 commits to darktable+rawspeed since 3.4
- 954 pull requests handled
- 290 issues closed

## The Big Ones

- Full rework of the import module. The new module allows you to see
thumbnails of your images before import and makes it easier to handle
multiple import tasks. The same dialog is now used for importing
   from disk, card or camera.

When importing "in-place", images that are already present in
darktable
are flagged and can be automatically excluded from the import.

Importing from a local drive won't use gphoto and so should work more
   reliably on Windows.

- A vector-scope is added to complement the current histogram,
   waveform and parade views.

- A new default demosaic algorithm (RCD) has been introduced, which
should provide
better quality than the current default (PPG) without the long run-
times
of AMaZE. the order of the demosaic algorithms has also been adjusted
for clarity.

- Support for "dual demosaic" has also been added, allowing you to
combine
"RCD + VNG4" and "AMaZE + VNG4" for bayer sensors, for xtrans sensors
there is
"Markesteijn 3-pass + VNG". This allows you to use an algorithm
better resolving
fine detail and another one delivering smoother output depending on
local image content.

- You can now create an opacity mask based on the sharpness of the
image. This uses
a similar algorithm to that used in dual demosaic.

- Drawn shapes are drawn on the original RAW image and then distorted
through
the pixelpipe. This previously led to, for example, circles becoming
ellipses
(due to lens distortion) after being placed on the image. All drawn
shapes can
now be pre-visualized and moved prior to placement, with full
deformation
applied. This makes the editing of masks easier fully WYSIWYG.

- A new Color Balance RGB module has been added. This can be used as a
one stop module
   for all color grading work.

- A new censorize module has been added. This allows you to hide parts
of the image by adding
   a blur/pixelization.

- A new crop module has been added. This new module has been added late
in the
pixelpipe and makes it possible to use cropped parts of the image for
source spots
in the retouch module, for example.

- A new section has been added to the color calibration module to allow
you to calibrate
colors using a color checker chart.

- The map module has been enhanced in a number of ways:
   - When importing a GPX the trace can be displayed.
   - Location can be set using polygons and directly created from
information
reported by Open Street Map. As a reminder, all locations
create tags automatically for images placed into the area.

- The basic adjustments module has been replaced with the quick access
panel, which
can be used to group controls from multiple different modules in one
place. Currently,
only non-graphical controls (sliders, comboboxes etc.) can be used.

## Other New Features And Changes

- The various lighttable modes can now be accessed via clear and
descriptive icons
at the bottom of the screen. These should be easier to use than the
existing drop-down
   selection.

- The export module is now also accessible on the left-hand panel of
the
   darkroom view.

- The mix control in the contrast equalizer module is now retained as
module parameter. This means that no data is lost when using this
slider and
   you c

No, since in JPEG (I guess you're referring to JPEG, but the same also
applies to PNG) you cannot set the desired output size: you set the
compression parameters, but the resulting file size also depends on
the content. This is contrary to music or video compression, where you
often set a desired bitrate (average or fixed), and the compressor
tweaks the compression parameters (e.g. quality settings) to achieve
it.

It works quite well. Suggest that you might want to try it again.  As a

Hi Bruce,
I learned a lot from your videos, proud to be able to give back a little
bit.

Ctrl+A = select all the pictures of the filmstrip

Ctrl+Shift+A = unselect all images

Found in Chapter 3.3.11.8
https://darktable.gitlab.io/doc/en/darkroom_bottom_panel.html#darkroom_filmstrip

Works also in Map-View.

At the begin of the strip, a single left-click into the empty space
does it.

My workflow:
Filter "collext images" / "narrow down search" / "metadata - geotagging"
/ "not tagged" reduces the strip to a "To Do-List" and pics get
unselected automaticly when they got a position.

I find that if I need to denoise and/or sharpen, I'll get great results

I have always had the same problem.

And now rawtherapee supports capture sharpening, or Art rl
deconvolution, with bigger radius of sharpening near the borders,
making the gap even stronger, and dual demosaicing. I hope these
features will come to darktable!

In your edited image i see that the raw therapee one has less noise

but *which* darktablerc indicates "1"? the *original* darktablerc which
is part of the package install and not local to *your* user account comes
with "1" as default. when you make changes to your darktable

OK!  That 'splains that!  I was unaware of there being two versions of
darktablerc.  Thank you for the clarity, Remco!

On Windows machines, the global version is located in C:\Program
Files\darktable\share\darktable, while the local version is located in
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\darktable.  The local version on my
machines DOES show file folder levels matching those in preferences.
Duly noted for future reference.  Thanks again, Remco!

(...)
That should indeed be the case:
your *local* darktablerc (see below) is read on startup, and the values there
are used and shown in the Preferences dialog. Changes made through the
Preferences dialog are written back to your local darktablerc (on exiting
darktable(?)).

Some changes can only be applied on start-up, so those require a restart to be
visible. But they are still stored internally and written back to darktablerc.

But keep in mind that there are *two* versions of darktablerc:
- a global one, used on first start, and containing default values. Users
normally cannot write to this file.
- a local one, written when you exit darktable and used on subsequent runs. So
in effect, the local darktablerc overrules the global darktablerc.

So the value in the *global* darktablerc can be different from what you see in
the Preferences dialog...

On reflection, I have the option in the camera to select either "PC

It appears that this is dead-on.  When I connect via USB to my one Linux
computer, the darktable import function recognizes both cards while
they're still in the G9. Thanks for the heads-up.

If the card reader is shown as a separate drive try to eject this

Another really good card reader comes from Anker -
https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Portable-Reader-RS-MMC-Micro/dp/B006T9B6R2/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3BXI9II028H6I=1=anker+sd+card+reader+usb+3.0=1609611450=anker+sd+card+reader%2Caps%2C238=8-3.
That said, my G9 has a USB3.0 port on it, so cabling it to one of the
USB 3.0 ports on my laptop is every bit as fast as, if not faster than
using the external card reader, and negates the need to extract the
cards from the camera and replace them later.  Doing so does not
transfer the images to the darktable database, but does make the files
available to be imported when darktable is opened and the folders are
accessed.

It is far slower and less safe than doing it by reading the card

Safe : if the card falls on to the ground, it will not be the same
as if it were the camera.
Slower : I admit this is based upon my own observations with Nikon
1 v1, D700 and D4s conneted either via usb2 or usb3.
Plus, if I do not mistake, this just does import the pictures into
the database, so they will not be available anymore after
unplugging the camera.
I think, together with others on this list, that the best is to
copy the files from the card to the disk, and then import them.
There are many tools that allow organizing while copying, most of
them have been listed in previous posts.

You are mostly correct, Kofa.  TFM says, "When a camera is detected, it
will show up in the device panel after pressing “scan for devices”. If
you hover your mouse over the camera tab label, a tooltip will pop up
with information about the camera (model, firmware version etc.)." With
my own Lumix G9 camera, that apparently is not the case as the "scan for
devices" button does not appear.  The G9 appears to the computer as just
another pair of file folders (JPGs and RAW files), once I tell the G9 to
appear as a storage device, not a tethered camera.  So far, the G9 is
not recognized by darktable for tethering.

Why not copy your photos from your camera to your hdd and then
import them (directory button) to your DT database in a second step?
Besides your problem might be that your windows as well as DT want
to simultaneously acces your camera via usb. That probably daesn't
work. If you for reasons I don't know have to directly import from

in your taskbar I think - I am on Linux). This way DT could have
exclusive access to your camera. At least that is the way it works for

Re: [darktable-user] Getting machine JPG colours in RAW editing

2020-12-25 Thread Willy Williams
If you're going to do a serious test, you might want to consider using a
standard ColorChecker card (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ColorChecker)
to ensure that the colors you perceive are close to a known industry
standard.

I decided to do a test. I found an image of a kangaroo (I am
Australian) where I had both a JPG and NEF file. I opened the JPG in
DT and did a snapshot of the image to use as a comparison for working
the RAW file. I then opened the RAW file and activated the snapshot
from the JPG. The RAW file was a little darker and duller. I easily
corrected this using the exposure module and the white and black
relative exposure sliders in filmic. The image looked nearly identical
to the jpg except for one patch of fur on the kangaroo which didn't
match perfectly in color. Initially I was not sure how I could fix
this because when I tried whitebalance the global shift of colours
just made it worse. Then I went to the color zones module and used the
eyedropper to identify the color of the patch of fur that was giving
me problems. In the saturation tab I started raising the saturation of
this region and the final result was as identical as I would ever hope
to achieve.  So my conclusion is that yes I can achieve an all but
identical image from a RAW nef file and a JPG image rapidly in DT. I
feel the issue is that Nikon and other camera manufacturers apply
unique corrections to the JPG based upon many factors including what
picture style you have selected in the camera. For instance, if
landscape is selected in the camera then Nikon pumps the blues and
greens up a bit. I actually have made a preset in color zones module
to enhance greens in landscapes. I also have another to reduce
excessive red in skin tones. I guess these are me making my own
picture styles in DT.

Take home message is try using the snapshot feature of darktable as a
reference for setting the RAW file if you want to match the camera
JPG. I admit when I edit images I do not care about the camera JPG,
but feel one of the biggest challenges when first learning to edit
your own RAW files is to get a result as good as the camera's JPG, let
alone better. After all Canon, Nikon, Olympus and all the other
manufacturers have invested a lot of resources and expertise into
coming up with the 'secret recipes' to produce these JPGs in an
attempt to make their cameras the best on the market.

Yes, unfortunately I think they give their special sauce only to

There's a better link (https://www.darktable.org/resources/) to the
manual which can be read online, and if you go farther down the page,
you can download a PDF of the manual.  Be aware that while darktable is
in version 3.2.1 right now, the current manual is only to version 3.0.
There is a new version of darktable coming out on Christmas, and the
revised manual should follow pretty quickly.

Part of the logo is in fact curves, and does not vary, regardless of the
operating system, but two parts of the overall logo (used in differing

have to see if Inkscape can do that.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Can't you transform a text to curves? in that case, you'd freeze the

I know that fonts are not supposed to scale linearly, so unless your logo is
pure text, scaling would change the visible aspect in any case.

First thing that crosses my mind is that the three machines are not

The Win 10 machines appear to be using the same (sans serif) font. I'm

[darktable-user] Question regarding SVG files and why they work differently

I have a question regarding the .SVG files used as watermarks and why

is on Ubuntu Linux 20.04.1.  The logo looks identical on all three
machines when viewed in Inkscape, yet when it is exported into the
appropriate location for user-generated watermarks in darktable on each

Finally, depending on what $USER1 and $USER2 are, the lines ought to start
with one of,
-rw-r- …
-rw-rw …
-rw-r--r-- …
-rw-rw-rw- …

The only important part here is the first group of "rw-", the others won't
change anything (in this respect), as darktable is running with the login name
as user.

If it does not, then we may have an idea of where to start.

So tell us what you see when you type the command, and we can possibly go
from there.
(If what you see is one of the four above listed patterns, and
$USER1==$USER2, then I am still stumped, but it may still help to know).

As I said "$USER1==$USER2" would be strange...

for OP:
Something else that *may* play a role (based on some other questions about
access I've seen): are you by any chance using a snap package for version
3.2.1, and a different install method for 3.0.2?

Re: [darktable-user] Re: Question regarding watermark location in Ubuntu Linux

2020-10-03 Thread Willy Williams
Thanks for the input, jys.  An interesting thing - being somewhat
arbitrary, I chose to revert from darktable 3.2.1 to 3.0.2 on my Linux
machine this morning. Interestingly, I can now see the three new .svg
files in darktable (in the $HOME/.config/darktable directory) and use
them to create watermarks.  Thanks for your help and guidance.

Quick basic thing to understand: the directories under /usr/share are *system*
directories, where default resources are usually installed alongside the applications
which use them. Admin rights (aka "root") are required to modify them, but this
isn't usually necessary because typically there will be a corresponding location for
*user* resources within your own home directory.

In the case of darktable, essentially everything is in your $HOME/.config/darktable
directory (but sometimes the $HOME/.local/share directory is used by applications for
things that aren't strictly "configuration"). Also, pay attention to tooltips
when hovering over controls in darktable... they often provide useful information. In
this case, the tooltip for the first module widget shows the answer to your question. :-)

Thank you, Patrick.  Having done that (note the screenshot below),
darktable still can't seem to find these three files.

And yes, I do need more time getting into the file system.

mkdir ~/.config/darktable/watermarks
then add your watermark (svg) files there

ps: there is no "Computer/usr/share/darktable/watermarks"
 but there is /usr/share/darktable/watermarks
but that is for system files, not user files.

and to help you prevent yourself from borking your system, a little
research into linux filesystem structure will greatly benefit you.
