[darktable-user] darktable-refcard-0.5 adds Dutch translation

Thanks to a contribution by Ger Siemerink there is now also a Dutch
translation of the refcard. For details see release notes below.

darktable-refcard-0.5 has been released. It describes almost all
shortcuts in darktable 2.0 on a single page for printing or on-screen
viewing. PDF versions in English, German, French and Dutch as well as source
code are available at

A big "thank you" goes to the darktable developers for their great work.

[darktable-user] linux distribution with dark table already on it??

Brand new to linux, and looking to add darktable.  I am currently using Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon with the 64 bit os.  It has gimp, but another lightroom replacement that is not non destructive.  With my limited experience with linux, it might actually be easier to change the distribution.  The ideal distro would have Gimp, Darktable, some form of monitor calibration software, and some scanning software.Assuming that isn't available, I don't see the code necessary to type in the box for Linux Mint.  It may be there, but its highly possible I don't know that mint is a form of something else and to type that code.  Thank you for your patience for someone so new, and I appreciate the help.Mark

Currently, I have to tag them manually, which is a tedious and
error-prone process.

Thanks to both of you. I like Lorenzo's approach, because it seems very 
pragmatic and I don't mind doing some shell scripting.


I watched Bruce's video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OF23NWCTepw) 
and checked the previous email discussion on various ways to get a 
monochromatic image 
(https://www.mail-archive.com/darktable-dev@lists.darktable.org/msg03786.html). 
That made me think whether it's possible to come up with a complete list 
of modules that support monochrome output in one way or another. So, 
here is my list summarizing some ways that have been mentioned before, 
and even a few more, sorted from "seems obvious" to "pretty obscure". :-)


- monochrome: on
- contrast brightness saturation: saturation -1
- color correction: saturation -1
- color zones: all nodes in saturation tab curve set to zero
- channel mixer: various settings
- color balance: input saturation 0% or output saturation 0%
- filmic: saturation 0%
- color look up table: preset
- low light vision: all nodes in curve set to zero, blue shift 0%
- soften: size 0%, saturation 0%, mix 100%
- colorize: saturation 0, source mix 100%
- vignetting: saturation -1, scale 0%, fall-off strength 0%

Exactly. Personally, I mostly use the monochrome and color zones module, 
so I know what to look for in *my* image collection.


I do not see many alternatives anyway: you could inspect the exported 
images but it takes much more work (unless imagemagick can do the trick) 
and a few assumptions about the export folder for example.


Yes, thought about that, too. This "analytic" approach, looking directly 
at the final image, would probably be more robust (given a good enough 
definition of "monochrome image"). The drawback when you use an external 
tool like ImageMagick is that you need to have *all* processed images 
exported to disk. I usually only export subsets.


In my opinion the best solution would be implemented in darktable 
directly, analyzing the final image content by some criteria with 
configurable thresholds. Unfortunately, this also seems to be the 
solution with highest effort. So, I will try, what you, Lorenzo, 
suggested. Thanks again.

[darktable-user] Fuji X-T10 RAF Levels Issue

Hi, all-

I'm experiencing an odd issue with my Fuji X-T10 RAF files in darktable.
When I enable the Levels module, areas with high blue saturation turn
black. Here's an example (a Google Drive folder containing 2 PNG
screenshots):

- No tweaking of the Levels module is needed; simply enabling it causes the
effect.

- It doesn't happen to areas whose saturation I increase using darktable's
CBS module, only areas that are highly saturated in the original raw image.

- I don't know if colors other than blue are affected, as I don't have any
images to test.

Is this a known issue, am I missing something, or should I report a bug...
and if so, is the bug in darktable, or in one of its dependencies?

Hi, everyone-

I've mostly used darktable on Ubuntu up until now, but have recently
purchased a 2015 MacBook Pro, and am currently using dt version 2.2.0 in
Mac OS Sierra.

For some reason, I'm unable to type numerical values for module parameters
like I was in Ubuntu. I right-click the slider (on the MacBook Pro I
actually 2-finger tap the touchpad while hovering over the slider), and get
the curved fine-control line, and a blinking cursor to indicate I can enter
a value. Dragging the line works fine, but the blinking cursor is lying to
me... typing does nothing.

Anybody know how to get this to work?

Up until yesterday, I was happily
working with Darktable 2.*, thinking I had opencl functioning,
although it didn't seem very speedy. After all, the graphics has
it, mesa has it and looking at the core options, it was checked.
But after reading some of the threads from the past 2 days
regarding opencl, I took a further look.
I tried toggling "activate OpenCL support"
to "off", but if was fixed in check mode. However, further
looking a hover message saying, "Not available on this system",
appeared. Now I'm confused and understand why it wasn't speedy.

I'm using a AMD Radeon R5 230, which supports OpenCL 1.2 on
  Fedora 25 (I jumped to F25 yesterday due to blowing my F24 system
  yesterday trying to install fglrx)
So it appears that Darktable requires OpenCL 1.2
This leaves me with a number of questions:
1) why is the activate OpenCL support ticked as enabled, when
  opencl is clearly not functioning?
2) I thought mesa had OpenCL 1.2 support, but apparently not?

3) how does one get OpenCL 1.2 on fedora using Radeon cards as
  there is no specific fedora driver on AMD site?
or 

4) what I'm I missing?

I did try and find some specific answers but wasn't successful,
  so thanks for your patience and support.

Please double-check your installation. The last line indicates a 
problem. Could there be a stray dynamic library of an older install 
lying around?
It's a fresh, clean F25 install using wayland, so there shouldn't be any 
old residual libs around.

I was successful by downloading the
magic-lantern src package and building it from there with
  the appropriate defines. Not sure if this is true, but assumed it
  would be camera dependent. Used make and the resultant cr2hdr
  works like a charm.

For what its worth... I just
acquired a new system that includes a RX480, running fedora 25.
It terms of getting the GPU working, it functions with mesa, but
lacks the "image support" required for full darktable support of
CL.
With respect to amdgpu-pro, I've
been working on installing it as recently as today, from what I
can tell, we need to wait for the driver to be updated to
support xserver-api(video-drv-23) (Xorg 1.19 (just released mid
Nov 2016)). Installing it currently fails on
xserver-api(video-drv-19) but seems to leave the driver
partially installed without detriment (status from Xorg.0.log).
  
Having updated to a new system with
an i7-6700k and faster hardware overall, I'm having no real issue
working without OpenCL for the moment, hoping that patience will
pay off shortly with the required update. What functionality will
be in place at that time will be the interesting bit.
With that in mind, I'm still
experimenting.

[darktable-user] Can I recover my edits after a crash?

Hi, all-

I'm pleased to report that for the most part, darktable has been quiet as a
church mouse when it comes to crashes, glitches, etc. But at the moment,
I'm experiencing an exception to that rule...

After about 3 hours of work, darktable closed unexpectedly while I was
drawing a path to define a mask. When I reopened dt, all my edits from the
session were gone... I was back to where I was before the 3 hours of work.

I know that dt saves .xmp files containing the edits, and those appear to
be intact for the files in question (confirmed by viewing a sample in a
text editor). Is there a way for me to apply all the .xmp files to their
respective photos and restore my work?

About half of the photos are raw files, the rest are jpgs. Does the fix you
mention only work on raw files?

The images are from a Fuji X-T10, and for many of my darker indoor shots
(behind-the-scenes concert photography, in this case), it's easier to get
what I want by working with the associated jpgs. Otherwise I find myself
having to fiddle with the base curve a lot more than I can afford to,
time-wise.

Fuji must use a lot of complex AI in its in-camera jpg processing, because
I can't seem to come up with a single good basecurve to serve as a starting
point. The one included with dt is always wrong in the darker areas, and
requires very touchy minute adjustments (even touchy in the logarithmic
view) that are really hard to control. When shooting Canon, I used to only
play with the raw files, as the profiles for it in dt gave me a really good
starting point. It's much harder with Fuji's x-trans files, hence my
working with jpgs.

Hi,
I've been noticing
  some strange behaviour with the film strip when in darkroom
  mode. 

1) when I select an
  image to edit from lighttable, darktable enters darkroom but
  the filmstrip is not synchronized to the selected image being
  edited. (In this case, I have 363 images in the collection)

2) the filmstrip is
  randomly(?) presenting duplication of images and missing others.
  

3) It is not presenting
  all of the images in the collection. In one case, the selected
  image from lighttable appears for editing in darkroom but doesn't
  appear in the filmstrip. If another image is selected from the
  filmstrip, the previous image can only be re-edited by selecting
  it from lighttable again.

4) selecting an image
  from the filmstrip does present the correct image for editing,
  however, the filmstrip adjusts to a completely different section
  of the strip. The selected image remains selected but one has
  to find it again.

I don't have any
  clue how, when or why this is happening to help isolate the problem.

I've been a victim of my own inattentiveness and wiped all edits on
images in the library. It sucked but it was my fault. It would have
been nice to have either a write protect feature on edited images

Two different issues, one protects the library (protected images)
from inadvertent or accidental changes due to a "select all" vs the
word processor concept of "infinite" undos. Whereas a document is
just "one", images in lightroom can be thousands. Not being familiar
with darktable code, I could see implementing an undo to be an
exponential problem with very little in return for the effort and
complexity to implement. I would think that there would also be a
performance hit and the usability issues would be a nightmare.

Is having an undo in lightroom for a single image really an issue?
There's very little that can affect an image other than clobbering
the history stack and one has to work at that.

I think there are way cooler features/improvements to be
implemented where does the time go?

particular locations :)  no big thing taking a file from an rpm to use for

Sorry, no... I'm glad it works for you, but this is a hack that might
break with the next update. It's a major advantage that the NVidia
driver is available for a number of distributions, including Ubuntu and
Debian...

It's not "as simple as it should be", since you are generally using
Fedora package management to keep track of installed software, and you
have to work around that here and install stuff by hand to get OpenCL
on AMD, because of lacking support. And it's a "hack" since you are
using part of a package built for RedHat. This may work in the current
combination of RH version and Fedora version, but it is a matter of
luck, not a matter of design. With the next change in either
distribution the dice may fall another way. I wouldn't want to spend a
couple hundred euros on that basis.

But as I said, I'm glad it works for you.

am glad that it works for him


I think the point being missed is that until there are truly complete 
open source driver options, there are no other "real" alternatives if 
one requires/wants OpenCL. So to imply individuals not to pursue working 
alternatives doesn't seem right to me. As far as "it works for me", I 
would suggest that it works for anyone that uses stock Fedora + current 
kernel + current generation RX cards + amdgpu-pro-install --compute.


To me this is beyond a "hack" - it works and it's simple (no 
recompilation required, no weird configuration edits, etc)


Has anything "broken" for me so far, even through numerous kernel 
updates? Nope. Could it happen? Perhaps. But then again the NVidia 
option doesn't appear to be much further ahead on this either.


So in conclusion, pick the HW you are comfortable with, which flavour of 
linux you want, and what it requires to provide the functionality you 
want, and go from there, knowing that if chosen correctly, you can get 
the functionality desired. Because at the end of the day, the history 
doesn't matter to me as I need to work, which requires OpenCL. If a 
better solution avails itself in the future, I will pursue that but 
until then I have a working system and that's what I'm sharing. Isn't 
that what it's all about?

I just upgraded to F26 (fresh install) and using KDE but now having
colour issues in that what I see in darktable is not what I'm seeing in
colour managed image viewers on the same monitor.

I have 2 monitors: a DELL FP2007 used for most of my daily, non-colour,
tasks and a Benq SW2700q used for naturally, image processing.  What I'm
getting is the following:

What I'm seeing is DVI-D-1 (primary is Benq)  has conflicting profiles.
I'm thinking the CM image viewers are using xatom. I've configured icc
profiles "correctly"  in the "Color Corrections" module but I'm confused
as to where Xatom is being configured or why it's not picking up the
correct profile. As you can see colord has the correct profiles. I don't
care about the Dell, it's the Beng profiles that seems to be problem.
Also, I don't know what the CRTC messages are implying.

Any thoughts or guidance?

  disabled", is this really a problem? Darktable-cltest and clinfo
  also report the same issue.

Yes. was wondering if there is a real, negative impact from the
DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_APERTURE failure or just a message that can be
ignored since opencl is avail on Ellesmere.

[darktable-user] Film strip with pen-and-tablet

How do I scroll the darkroom filmstrip with a pan and tablet?

I can cope with (just about) scrolling the lighttable view with page
up/down but the filmstrip has me stumped.

I only have a pen/tablet connected to my Mac, I do not have a mouse.

  Works rather efficiently for me. For faster copies, I just
  plug the memory card into a card reader then do the same but
  from the card rather than using the camera usb.

Is there a way to bulk import many folders at once rather than importing 
one folder at a time manually? Eg bulk import from the command line or 
LUA script or darktable feature I'm not seeing?

[darktable-user] How to zero star rate an image?

Hi,

I import images with zero rating and then apply ratings accordingly.
Previous to 3.0.2, I could zero rate an image by toggling star-1
(assuming only star 1 is toggled on) if the rating is no longer desired.

I must be missing something, how do I zero rate an image from the UI, as
I seem to be unable to remove ratings now.
