some of you may of tried this..some not. anyways theres some new tool out from the FBI that is supposed to track to see if you got any DoS daemons installed on your machines. and although im 99.9% sure i have none i figured i'd try itout to see what all it does. the first machine had ulimits, the program died, the second machine had none, i had to kill it once it got to 206MB memory usage, cuz my machine was crawlin.(I have 256MB ram 400MB swap) not that i plan to run it again unless they fix it but has anyone run it successfully ? see slashdot.org for a link to the site that has it. i already emailed the fbi about it a few minutes ago but i figure they're gettin flooded with emails about the prog(wether it be about my problem or something else). nate [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ]-- Vice President Network Operations http://www.firetrail.com/ Firetrail Internet Services Limited http://www.aphroland.org/ Everett, WA 425-348-7336http://www.linuxpowered.net/ Powered By:http://comedy.aphroland.org/ Debian 2.1 Linux 2.0.36 SMPhttp://yahoo.aphroland.org/ -[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ]-- 12:46pm up 175 days, 1:01, 1 user, load average: 1.08, 1.04, 1.01

look your modem(s) up on this page: http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/2207b.html confirm they are not winmodems, chances are if you paid less then $90 US. it is a winmodem. anyways if it is not, i think it would be easiest to contact tech support from the company that makes it and ask em how to get the modem working in dos MODE. if it works in dos mode it works in linux, pretty much gauranteed. if it needs some special driver/program you can load it in dos mode then boot linux iwth loadlin. nate On 10 Feb 2000, gou.dedalus wrote: dedalu >Hi, dedalu > dedalu >I and my friend have a problem with Linux. Re: Unstable kernel question
2.2.14 should work with the athlon, what cpu arch are you telling the config program you have? you probably need to tell it Pentium (unless there is an athlon option). from what i saw 2.3.x didn't have all the athlon patches from 2.2 yet but it was on alan cox's to-do list. if the kernel doesn't detect the chipset that is not unusual it just can't optimize for the chipset, standard drivers would work. also check the compiler you are using (gcc -v) it is reccomended to use 2.7.2.3 when compiling a kernel, although there is some reports of success with egcs 1.1 and very few success reports using egcs 2.95. nate On Tue, 8 Feb 2000, [iso-8859-1] Jos? Re: Reporting RAM
make sure you got the line right i believe it is: append="mem=128M" been a while since i used it though, the easiest way to see free ram is to type 'free' or cat /proc/meminfo or use top or use dmesg and search for the amount of ram it detects: Memory: 127948k/131008k available (1068k kernel code, 412k reserved, 1536k data, 44k init) its probably best to leave 1MB free when using the append option for most boards, so tell linux u got 127MB instead of 128 sometimes allocating every last bit of ram can cause problems(sometimes minor sometimes major). nate On Mon, 7 Feb 2000, Lane Lester wrote: lleste >What command will tell me how much RAM Debian Linux thinks I have? lleste > lleste >My BIOS, Win NT, and Win 98 all know I have 128M, but Corel Linux lleste >thinks I have only 64M. Re: Which Boot Manager?
if gets to the point where nothing else works, you can always use loadlin, boot linux from dos mode. just need a copy of the kernel on a dos accessable partition, and loadin.exe then its easy to make a batch file for each distribution. or you can search the www to see how to add linux to nt's boot menu, its a *little* more complicated involves copying the boot info from linux to a file.. for your situation though, with that ezdrive software(curse it silently) i'd probably go with loadlin if i was in your position. if you use loadlin though make sure to do it from dos mode(safe dos mode) to avoid any drivers/etc loading before. nate On Sat, 5 Feb 2000, Lane Lester wrote: lleste >I currently have Win 98 and NT along with Corel Linux on my system. lleste >CL's lilo lets me go with either Linux or Windows, and NT's boot lleste >manager lets me pick between 98 and NT. lleste > lleste >I just bought McCarty's _Learning Debian GUN/Linux_, and I'd like to lleste >install the Debian that came with it. lleste > lleste >Can you tell me how to manage the booting between all these guys? Re: big non-boot disks
usually yeah, or get the tech specs from the www site from the maker of the drive.. the only barriers i've found with ide are 540(545?)MB 8GB and 32GB haven't encountered/read about problems with stuff inbetween those, although i dont doubt there are some really broken bioses out there. one of systems i built a few months ago with a 37GB ibm drive did not detect teh drive in the bios, or if it did it didnt show me the geometry of the drive it was just blank, but for some reason i was still able to format and install/use it not only as a bootable drive(with a 6GB bootable partition) but i could (apparently havent really tested it to its full extent) access all 37GB of the drive. and in another case, with a really old computer, the bios stopped recognizing ANY drives at all, and yet when i booted a linux kernel from floppy i could read/write/mount drives no problem. it must of bypassed bios calls to detect the drives, as when i booted to dos and tried fdisk it said 'no fixed disks present'. moral of the stories i guess even if the bios can't see the drive right it still might work :) nate On Wed, 2 Feb 2000, Danny Heap wrote: danny >I'm seeing advertisements for IDE drives with over 20 GB capacity. Re: compiling kernel on sparc/debian
try make zImage or bzImage or zdisk or bzDisk i dont know if zdisk or bzdisk (bzDisk?) are valid options but i know zImage and bzImage is, vmlinuz is not as far as i know. zImage is used for kernels that can load in the 640kb of memory, bzImage will load in 'high' memory (above 1MB i believe) for larger kernels. most of the time 2.2.x requires bzImage but you can try zImage, it will tell u if the kernel is too big, and wether to use bzImage or not. nate On Wed, 2 Feb 2000, Aaron Solochek wrote: aarons > aarons >meatball:/usr/src/linux#make vmunix aarons >make: *** No rule to make target `vmunix'. it would be helpful to know if the machine has ever been running good under another distro/OS or if its a 'new' machine.. install lm_sensors on the machine for some additional info about the mainboard like voltage and temp and stuff. i also find running X on the screen with status monitors is good, when my BP6 crashes i can usually always see what was going on when it crashed from mem/cpu load to cpu/MB temp to time it crashed etc. it may also be worth a shot to install another OS on it to see if it does the same..could try one of the floppy based linux distros that installs into memory or the QNX demo (www.qnx.com) which also loads into memory. also it may be worth trying to crash it by increasing the cpu and i/o load by loading multiple copies of [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1 copy for every 10-15MB of ram you have. make the machine work it's ass off for a while and see if it holds up for the 24 hours, or if it crashes real quick. i can usually get about 15 million disk writes out in a 2-3 day period with a good amount of seti going. it stresses the IDE bus to the limits(and past some, ive had machines reset the ide bus a few times during that) nate On Wed, 2 Feb 2000, Allan M. Re: help with kernel compiling
well, 2.0.36 has prooven itself stable to use. i have a couple patches in it, but probably the biggest thing is my main machines use software raid, i've read about some problems in 2.2.x raid and am not confident upgrading to 2.2.x will make everything run as stable as it does now. i am about 1500 miles away from those machines so if something critical happened and reverting to the old kernel didnt fix it i'd be looking at at least a week of downtime while someone ships the drives to me to look at/repair. although the prospects of making better use of the 2nd processor in this machine on a 2.2.x kernel are nice, i think i will hold off until we physically replace the whole machine before i go for a new kernel rev and new distribution(potato). this machine being up for almost 6 months makes me confident this kernel is good. nate On Mon, 31 Jan 2000 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: TKWJ3 >Why 2.0.36 on your most important boxes? if i understand what your asking you should be able to nslookup server domain.com where domain.com is the domain you want to lookup. the DNS will tell you what it thinks the IP is. if it is configured right it will show what you expect. the server command tells nslookup to change it's default DNS to ask some other server info. nate On Sat, 29 Jan 2000, Alec Smith wrote: alec >Right now I've got my Debian-based server acting as a DNS cache.
