Realized that after the fact, just didn't need the re-iteration of what I already knew before my 2nd cup of coffee today. I'll join up to the Virus list as well. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Licensing
Nick, One other thing about this. It's not the scan time that is the most important, it's the CPU utilization. As it turns out, they are roughly related, and clearly clamdscan and F-Prot are the best performers by a mile. Back when I did my tests of these things, those two ran neck and neck, hardly registering any load, and then with a big jump, McAfee and AVG were third and fourth best. I have minimized the affects by doing AV scanning after the JunkMail scanning, which is behind an Alligate gateway, so many fewer messages get scanned for viruses, but still AV scanning is a major contributer to overall load. Matt Nick Hayer wrote: David Barker wrote: Declude has this process and functionality built in to the Declude product which enables customers to use a command line scanners like ClamWin Brian Burns port called ClamAV supports clamd which is wicked fast [and free]. Switching from clamscan.exe to clamdscan.exe ClamAV averages 15ms against all emails it sees. That is like a factor of 10 faster than fprot its closest performance competitor. Since its free and w/Sanesecurity phish sigs I give it an editors choice :) It would be nice to see [feature request?] the ms response time for AVG - " -Nick --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Licensing
So it seems that market forces are not causing the price to drop. It is causing the price to increase. There are ever more players in the antivirus market but pricing continues to go up. The market force of "absolute need for antivirus on the mail server" is outweighing the number of companies supplying antivirus command line scanners. What is the breaking point. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Licensing
we're looking into changing now also - there's no way we can afford to keep F-Prot at those rates.. I just do not understand why greed always has to set in when a product comes out that works great and is hassle free. We've never had to contact them in the 5-6 years of using them for any issues at all. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Licensing
Just a comment on this Licensing thread F-Prot like all virus companies charge the extra $ because of the different process used when scanning email as opposed to regular scanning. Declude has this process and functionality built in to the Declude product which enables customers to use a command line scanners like ClamWin to scan their email in the same way, as virus companies mail server versions. Not to mention AVG which is built into Declude Security Suite, which hopefully customers will now begin to really understand the value and financial benefits to this integration. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Licensing
I hadn't noticed that before. This webpage is pretty darn explicit, so yes, the pricing you quoted is correct! From the bottom of the page that describes the corporate licences available: http://www.f-prot.com/products/corporate_users/win/ F-Prot Antivirus for Windows on Mail Servers To use the F-Prot Antivirus scanner on a Windows Mail Server a F-Prot Antivirus for Windows on Mail Servers license is required. This license category differs from the general F-Prot Antivirus for Windows for corporate users license in that it covers use that the general license does not: F-Prot Antivirus for Windows on Mail Servers applies to mail servers, mail relays and mail gateways, i.e. computers that provide mail services to a network, either for incoming or for outgoing e-mail. High-quality, efficient virus scanning is essential for any mail server. E-mail is the most common way for viruses and other malware to spread. The most effective way of stopping the spread of malware onto a network and beyond is at the server. F-Prot Antivirus for Windows on Mail Servers includes a Command Line Scanner (fpcmd.exe) that can be used with third party mail server software such as Declude and MailEnable. Information on how to use the software with such programs can be found on www.declude.com and www.mailenable.com. If you are interested in purchasing F-Prot Antivirus for Windows on Mail Servers, please visit our order form and take a look at our price lists. NB: Administrators should read question 113 and question 114 in the FAQ section of our Windows support pages before installing F-Prot Antivirus for Windows Mail Servers. According to something I read on the Alligate Support forumn at least as far back as March. Interesting that they have never issued much of a press release on it to there customer base. Tho I licensed mine in Februrary of this year so I'm good for a bit. At 12:59 PM 7/14/2006 -0700, you wrote: When did Frisk change the licensing for F-prot! RE: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot
Thanks, Glenn. Then I assume this is a case for "your mileage may vary"... Richard's case may be more similar to yours than mine. I don't use the realtime scanner on my server or workstation, but I do use the automated update. I installed it on my workstation so that I could test scripts and so forth, and also keep any eye on the update intervals. As of something like 3.16c, I don't have the "must tell the GUI that it's okay for it to fail to fetch an update once in a while problem" on the three machines I used to have that problem on (two W2K3 and one WXP). I did change the environment though, because to prevent issues on one of the servers, I instituted a scripted fetch of the updates for multiple times per day. The workstation continues to only use the F-Prot tool and GUI. FRISK has just updated F-Prot for Windows to 3.16e and this purports to include enhanced scanning capability for malformed WMF that appear as other graphic formats. Hmmm...I don't know why that would be there...Scott, can you comment? Anyway, here's what we use: SCANFILE C:\Progra~1\FSI\F-Prot\fpcmd.exe /TYPE /SILENT /NOMEM /ARCHIVE /NOBOOT /DUMB /AI /PACKED /SERVER /REPORT=report.txt VIRUSCODE 3 VIRUSCODE 6 VIRUSCODE 8 Note that we use the /AI, /PACKED, and /SERVER switches, which some might not want to use. I missed that in the release notes - ouch! So... the fpcmd.exe should be used as Darin stated. I did not notice in the Declude Virus manual when reviewing this morning, just double checked and sure is there as one of the 2 choices depending on version. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot
See this post from a little while ago on the Virus list: http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg09001.html The only changes that I am aware of is that Clam-AV can approach F-Prot's efficiency if you run the daemon and AVG became a tiny bit slower after adding extra support for detecting encrypted archived viruses (they call it "conservative" detection). Everything else pales in comparison to F-Prot when it comes to speed. Since I'm blocking encrypted archives that contain a banned extension, detecting a few extra ones as viruses isn't that big of a deal (especially if I could turn off the bounce). If you're not using F-Prot already as one of two or more scanners, you really have only one choice IMO. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot
This is a big issue for me because my second scanner is so wasteful in comparison to my first, and during larger virus outbreaks, there's a very clear spike in average utilization. I don't believe that this is being prioritized, so I suggest that you hold your request and repost it when Scott gets back...that is if it causes you any issues. I've given some consideration to writing a handler script myself that would do the same thing, but I haven't gotten around to it yet :) It certainly can be done though. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot
Gotcha...didn't realize there was a difference. We have the Windows version and use the command line scanner that comes with it. As far as update scheduling goes, there are several links on the Declude Tools page and in this archive to schedule periodic updates of the signature files. We take the simplest approach and FTP and unzip the signature files hourly. If you buy the Windows version, you get the DOS version as well. I'm pretty sure the Windows version of that command-line scanner is 32-bit and the DOS version is only 16, so there's a big reason to not use the DOS version. Also the Windows version easier to keep upated since you can set the scheduler for hourly updates or whatever. Don't think you can do that in the DOS version but I could be wrong. My 1 year McAfee VirusScan Command Line license was $11 through CDW. I think only CLAM-AV can beat that price. On Sunday McAfee caught these that F-Prot did not catch: 1 Exploit MHTRedir 4 Exploit-ObjectData Trojan 2 W32 Bagle pwdzip (typically catches more of these) 3 Netsky P F-Prot caught 1 Netsky.P that McAfee did not catch. These are usually corrupt variants. McAfee 260 caught, F-prot 251. For the latter there is an outstanding request to Scott to kill additional scanning once a scanner detects a virus.. -Nick Hayer > > I realize that the cost of F-Prot (which I am using) is quite low and > others might be as well, so it is not a cost issue but rather a "Do I > really need it?". > > Thanx > > > Goran Jovanovic > The LAN Shoppe > > > > > -Original Message- > > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:Declude.JunkMail- > > [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Scott Fisher Sent: Monday, May 17, > > 2004 12:49 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: > > [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot > > > > I find the Mcafee is the best at detecting viruses within encrupted > zips. > > Otherwise they are pretty even. > > > > I'd recommend using F-Prot and Mcafee. > > Mcafee for the DOS command line scanner is dirt cheap. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot
For the folks using multiple scanners, do you have any stats on how often the secondary scanner found a virus that the first one missed? I realize that the cost of F-Prot (which I am using) is quite low and others might be as well, so it is not a cost issue but rather a "Do I really need it?". Re: [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot
I find the Mcafee is the best at detecting viruses within encrupted zips. Otherwise they are pretty even. I'd recommend using F-Prot and Mcafee. Mcafee for the DOS command line scanner is dirt cheap. I'll see if I can find my price tomorrow. <<< [EMAIL PROTECTED] 5/15 12:29p >>> Can anyone tell me how f-prot compares to mcafee or symantec when it comes to keeping their database up with new viruses? RE: [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot
Title: Message I will ditto this. I used the 16 bit trend command line application, and was having trouble keeping up with 15-20k messages a day. I switched to F-prot’s 32-bit command line scanner and I don’t even see it pop up in the task manager it moves so quick. Very big improvement, can’t even say I can see a performance difference with it running or not. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Update
I think the general recommendation is to use the 32-bit command line version instead. Check the Declude Virus manual for syntax. For updating, there have been several contributions to the community to automate the update for servers (not logged in): Checkout http://www.declude.com/tools/ under the "Third party tools for Declude Virus users:" section.
