[slim] Getting rid of slimserver
I'm going to stick my neck out here ! Slimserver is a poor man's solution to digital music management. The model is wrong and it won't last. Why can't I rip CDs and play them via Squeezebox with one application. I want to use iTunes or Amarok to manage my music and PUSH it to Squeezebox. I'm fed up of having to add music to a READ ONLY repository and not being able to tag it and play it directly from my file system in one go. The PULL paradigm doesn't equate to my listening habits. If Squeezebox is going to retain a competitve edge it must do provide something akin to providing a virtual sound driver that masquerades as a device on windows / linux allowing you to play music over wifi to the squeezebox. This was it would be client agnostic and not tie you into using Slimserver. Surely this is real open-source model and the direction slimserver should be taking. -- meltsheep meltsheep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8203 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31879 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I rip my music on a wireless (Windows) laptop and save it on a (Linux) server share. Slimserver is also runing on that Linux box. IMHO that is the architecture best suited for slimserver/SB/TP setups. Slimserver is not really meant for running on laptops and makes little sense to people who use their PC/laptop as a slimserver. For them it seems a strangely contrived way of playing music. For me it's perfect. The server is up 24/7 so I can always access my music even when the laptop is closed or otherwise inaccessible. Client PC's go on and off the network. The server stays running and doing the things servers do, like downloading stuff, recording TV shows, playing music, allowing remote access, serving web pages, etc. etc. That's the kind of world where the slimserver makes sense. Now, obviously, I'm way ahead of the crowd in this (like many in this mailing list), but I'm convinced most people will be running servers in some form in a not so distant future. Perhaps then they will understand. Regards, Peter ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It's possible that it gets it from a reverse DNS lookup (find the name that's connected to the ip) directed at the draytek, but I don't think that's the case. My guess is that the slimserver software asks the OS for the hostname and the SB gets it from slimserver during the discovery process. Peter, The home server is probably the next big thing in computing for Joe public. As homes become more digital it makes sense to have a central controller and repository. I started off with a NAS device with Slimserver bundled into it. It changed the way I listened to music and I suffer now loss in quality through playing it through a Squeezebox. I became so dependent on this setup I had to make it more flexible for me (my personal approach may not suit everyone). Now I have a central server for the house running on a Mini-ITX server running Windows 2003 Server. It also runs Slimserver. My data is on the NAS device which also acts as my print server. For me this is fantastic and is flexible to my needs. The operation of Ripping and tagging is a one-off, the CD arrives, it is ripped, tagged, packed away. The music is then available to everyone in the house through a PC or the SB3 in the lounge and just the remote. I can add plugins like Slimscrobbler, Biography, Album Review, xAP interface to stream news headlines and TV reminders. For me this is a wonderful setup and Slimserver is great. I know I like many in the forums are ahead of the crowd. I don't want Slimserver to be less flexible or dumbed down. [slim] Re: Getting rid of slimserver
The content is immutable within slimserver. As it should be, IMO. The Slimserver's job is to get the music to the Squeezebox. It should not ever alter the music library in any way. This has actually been discussed in the past, and although some people disagree, I believe the majority felt that Slimserver should not manipulate the library. I still feel that way. I want to be able to edit my music collection meta-data Why do you need to do this within Slimserver? In any case, you can use iTunes to manipulate the library and metadata (at least on the Mac side) and Slimserver can use the iTunes library. play them immediately without going though the re-scan routine. You can. While a re-scan is occurring you can still browse your folder hierarchy to play anything in it. This how most people play music on their PCs. So why should playing it over wifi any different to using PC speakers? My point is the paradigm of a 'music server' seems a bit odd. I play the music through my stereo, and like many others I have a music server that does just that, serve music on demand to my stereos. It's on 24/7. I don't want it to be the way it is on a PC. I don't want slimserver / squeezebox to replace my CD player. Maybe that's the issue here. Maybe most people who buy this digital music solution are planning to rip all their CDs and play them jukebox fashion ?! I'm not. I don't want a music jukebox. I think you're on target here. The product is fundamentally not designed for what you want. It's designed to be a giant music jukebox that can play all your music whereever you like via the Squeezebox. If you're still within your 30 day return period, I--and I mean this politely--suggest you consider returning it. I don't believe it is designed to do what you want and I think it is unlikely you will end up being happy with your purchase. If you're outside the 30-day period, the SB3's retain pretty good resale value. Kevin P.S. I, too, wish iTunes would handle FLAC and its cue sheets. -- Kevin O. If you bought a nice sports-car and the auto company later went to your house and took it away, leaving you an SUV instead, because they retain the right to change the car after the purchase, you'd be very angry. Then if you couldn't drive that car on just any road, but had to use the toll-roads set up by that company, you'd be even more angry. What word describes a person who knowingly enters into such a contract? I can think of several but the least offensive one is INSANE. Yet, there are many who buy music under those same terms. They buy music from an on-line store called itunes. If you buy music from itunes, the restrictions on the files can be changed at any time. From http://www.infoworld.com/article/06/08/01/HNitunesdrmcomplaints_1.html terms of agreement in the iTunes store, which retains the right to change the terms of the purchase after it's made and claims no responsibility for damage iTunes software could cause to users' computers. What word would describe someone who knowingly enters into such a contract? I can think of a few... The fact that Slimserver doesn't write anything to your audio files is VERY good. [slim] Re: Apple TV Competition?
First, my friends, look over the damning discussion of this item on engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/itv-becomes-apple-tv/. I ordered one such unit the same day Stevie announced it, then looked at the specs and realized that it was just another Apple gimmick to keep people bound to the iTunes, iPod, and iTunes Music Store bundle. Believe me, I've been an Apple user for 20 years now and I spend hours each day on my Apple computer, but I've become wary of the ways Jobs seeks lock-in. Just look at the messy and annoying DRM at the core of all of the Apple entertainment technologies. Worse, Apple could have offered a credible replacement for those dreadful set-top boxes we are usually forced to lease from the cable providers, but the Apple TV simply isn't a credible solution to that. Slim has been heroic in support of open-source and fair-use solutions for content, and it remains largely agnostic with respect to formats and platforms. Bravo! I'm building essentially the entertainment hub Apple TV claims to be. It's pretty simple: take an old but not ancient laptop, load linux or a hacked MacOSX on it, run Slim as either server-client or just client, attach a Pinnacle HD Pro tuner stick on it, etc. For the real expert, try mythtv. Also consider the forthcoming Netgear EVA8000 which will have far better capabilities than the Apple device, and will prolly cost a good bit less. Also consider the new variant on the SlingBox. Remember that with AppleTV, you still need a DVD drive and some way to control that, and good luck trying to install any codecs on it that are not blessed by Steve. -- rfrost rfrost's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5532 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31559 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Some MusicIP 'brains-out-blowing' problems
Hello there ! First, I'm sorry if the questions I'll ask here have some kind of answer somewhere, but I've been trying to get this work for 3 days now, diggind deep in both this forum and musicip's (unsuccessfully as you might guess) and I really need to know if it's worth struggling further. I run SS 6.5.1 and MusicIP 1.7.1 on win XPsp2. SS using MM, and 'blank' music folder setting. I keep MM running as GUI, because in the headless app there's no way to set exclusions (disabled tracks, books, ...) and in SS there's no way to forget about unchecked songs, like when using iTunes. There's one problem with MM-GUI's API service randomly stopping, but I posted on musicip forums about that. Let's see. Just to settle this, I've also checked all what follows in headless mode with whole SS cache deleted, so this wouldn't be an answer. What I want to expose here is the erratic behaviour of this fantastic but capricious couple of apps. My stats, shown in MM : 13002 songs (12989 mixables), 248 artists, 840 albums, 34 genres. When SS first scans, everything matches. (except albums, but that's ok since both apps don't handle my [n/a] tags the same) But then, songs went down to 12997, and later on, after a short MM/SS shutdown/reopen (in right order), back to 13001 (!) but this time with only 229 artists... In top of that, trying to create a mix doesn't always work... Sometimes (when trying from webUI) it creates an empty list. When trying from the remote, it shows 'MusicMagic Mix (1 of 50)' but keeps repeating the same song (must be the same 'empty list' symptom). Maybe this won't work while playing, I remember having stopped the song once, retried and got it to work. This whole flood to say that using this combination can be a real hassle, but the mixing possibilities are huge. But my music is on a local server, so I really need this to work from the remote or the webUI (on another computer) without continually having to physically access the server to restart, rescan or whatever. So any advice by people managing to master this would be hihgly welcomed. -- Stan Pulsar Stan Pulsar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31894 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Entered all required IP addresses for my network and it worked perfectly. I am able to connect the SB directly to the Slimserver on the NSLU through the cable and also access the NSLU from my PC over the wireless bridge, as if it was connected directly to the network. The NSLU is also able to access the internet through the default gateway. I'm amazed this all works? Because this is a convoluted wireless arrangement. Say the SB3 wants to send something to SlimServer. It can't do this over its crossover cable because you've told it to use the wireless interface and bridge the Ethernet port. So it looks for SlimServer out over the wireless interface. The router sees the packets destined for SlimServer and retransmits them. The SB3 receieves the packets, detects that they are destined for the bridged device and sends them to the NAS (SlimServer). SlimServer then responds with what the SB was asking for by sending it down the crossover cable. The SB can't see the packets because it's acting as a bridge again since the packets came over the Ethernet interface and sends this over wireless. The router receieves this and retransmits it, which the SB3 finally receives. Pretty convoluted! It's great that it works, but how's the bandwidth? Any latency? Can you play FLACs? Someone tried this once before and it didn't work - I put it on http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?NetworkDesign as an example of what NOT to do. I do not mean any disrespect at all, I'm surprised and amazed that it works! Perhaps someone changed the squeezebox firmware to allow this. Well yes, if you turned off the bridging function and went with the wired interface it would work perfectly, but you could then not access the NAS from a PC and you also couldn't get Internet/SqueezeNetwork access. Perhaps I'm confused at what the wireless bridge functionality really does in a Squeezebox then. I thought it merely dumbly passed all traffic coming from the wired interface out to the wireless interface for the router to deal with. If it sifts through the incoming wired traffic looking for packets destined for itself, it's acting more like a router than a wireless bridge, right? It would be great if it did that, but then it's not acting as a wireless bridge. Also if there's no SlimServer on the wired interface it's a waste of resources as there will never be any traffic destined for it. So I suspect it does not do this. Traffic coming over the wireless interface is a little easier to understand - if it sees traffic destined for itself it processes it, if it sees traffic destined for the bridged device it passes it down the wired interface without processing it. -- Mark Lanctot It's like, you know, a New Age religion, but with better treble response. - Jon Heal Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31850 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I installed the 6.5.1 shortly after it was released. Since then 'Clear Rescan' has not worked: the scanner starts, runs for less than 30 secs, and then shuts down. This opens up whole new possibilities as I touched upon in the wiki now. With a NAS or quiet server in wired range of your Squeezebox and your router connected wirelessly, you get it all: - very fast, reliable wired bandwidth for music playback and SlimServer access - access to SqueezeNetwork over wireless, which should be fine as there aren't many/any high-bitrate streams - access to SlimServer from the rest of your network, both wired and wireless portions - the NAS/server will also have Internet access About the only drawback to this arrangement is if you have another Squeezebox on the wireless portion because it'll be a 2-hop arrangement - which isn't a problem for some people though. -- Mark Lanctot It's like, you know, a New Age religion, but with better treble response. - Jon Heal Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31850 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If you forget that for long enough, I think the SB gives up completely, and you have to press and HOLD the Power button again to get anywhere. -- danco danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31826 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Tune in URL - direct link from a browser?
I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a way to make it so that I can click/right-click within Shoutcast and the stream gets played on my Slimserver rather than on Winamp. I tried to manually create the link from the source of the Tune in URL page but couldn't even get it to tune to a station with a URL, a la http://localhost:9000/tunein.html?p0=playlistp1=playp2=http://62.49.59.50:8000 is there some variation of this that WOULD work? Presumably there's an easy way in windows to append a right-clicked URL to prepend the needed root URL Anyone have guidance on this? [slim] Re: squeezbox on a Mac
Actually the reason you don't see it is that the Squeezebox is connected to the PC. Press left and hold for 5 seconds. Go through network setup again, just press FF to skip everything you entered except when you get to the part where you select the SlimServer. You should see the new server listed. Once you've connected to it once, if you go through this again you can select it right from step 1. -- Mark Lanctot It's like, you know, a New Age religion, but with better treble response. - Jon Heal Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31900 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Yes, you should be able to - just press-and-hold left for 5 seconds and select a server to connect to. Provided you connected to both of them at least once, they should both be there. The main question is, why do you want to do this? :-) -- Mark Lanctot It's like, you know, a New Age religion, but with better treble response. - Jon Heal Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31900 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

meltsheep, I dont like the idea of SlimServer either, and only listen to internet radio. Theres an online service called Oboe that will store all your music, and can be accessed from any computer. I recommended to SlimDevices that they partner with this company, so that our personal music archives, once uploaded to Oboe, are accessible via the SqueezeBox, like Pandora, without our PCs running OR the need for a NAS. That would be the ultimate. PaulB: you state: Now I have a central server for the house running on a Mini-ITX server running Windows 2003 Server. It also runs Slimserver. Is the NAS simply a box that is always turned on sitting next to your regular PC? In fact you can even connect two Squeezeboxes to each other in ad-hoc mode with bridging enabled, and thereby bridge two ethernet LANs together. The thing it can not do is to be a real access point with more than one 802.11 station connected. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31850 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: scanner.exe never stops
I too have had the same problem since upgrading to 6.5 and now even 6.5.1. I get as many versions of scanner.exe running simultaneously as my cpu will allow. WinXPsp2 6.5.1 no plugins (except alien) I have uninstalled, done a clean install and spent the last week with tech support that claim they never heard of such a bug. Is the option to uninstall and go back to 6.3? or just give up and go with roku, sonos, or some other hardware/software combo. I am underwhelmed by the tech support - which they admit they don't know what is causing the problem. Help appreciated as I am hours and $s into this. [slim] Re: Sudden Severe Clipping Distortion
Matt, the same thing happened to me about 2 weeks after I bought it. I did notice the problem went away when I turned the volume down on the SB itself. I contacted support via email, not the forum, and they told me to unplug/replug the device with the 1 pressed in, which fixed the sound - something to do with the sound card, support told me. About a week later I wasn't getting any sound at all, so just unplugged/replugged the device, which worked. Simultaneous pressing of the 1 key during replug may not be necessary, it seems. If it happens more than once a month I'll probably ask for an exchange. Another time I noticed the display went blank in the middle of a song, but the song kept playing, and the display came back up after about 20 seconds. Kevin - in terms of VOB support I'm using the dvd assist hack to fool the dvd player. It's slightly (but only slightly) tedious to set up but frankly works like a dream when you're up an running. For my own purposes, the wireless stuff isn't even activated - due to home improvements works (;-)) I have cat5e running around the house. All dvd's etc are ripped and stored on a linux box in a cupboard and the streaming works just fine. I've not found a problem with the core due performance to need the extra power - what sort of apps are you looking to run? (or is it just future proofing?) Also figured if I got brave in future I could stick mythtv on it. -- xio xio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31559 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Getting rid of slimserver
The Oboe service is part of MP3tunes. There have apparently been some discussions between SD MP3tunes (search the forum for previous threads). No idea what the current status is. Personally, I don't see the point of streaming my own collection over the internet when I have it on a hard disk on my LAN. YMMV, etc. A NAS is Network Attached Storage. It's a hard drive that connects anywhere on your network, usually via ethernet cable, although there are some wireless versions around. A NAS has a processor, RAM, and an OS (usually linux) so it's really a special purpose computer: low powered, low power consumption, and oriented towards serving files to other computers on the network. But some NASs can also run slimserver, like the Buffalo LinkStation that I use. If you don't like slimserver on a desktop or notebook comuter then you won't like it any better on a NAS. But if the issue is not having a PC on, the NAS is a nice solution. See the SD wiki for more info. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31879 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Mobile/Cell Phone and Squeezebox connection over bluetooth?
Do you mean from -outside- your network? If so, you need to make SlimServer accessible from outside, see http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?ConnectingRemotely. It doesn't cost any more than what your provider charges for general Internet access. From inside your network, the Squeezebox doesn't have any Bluetooth connection. You could either: - install a Bluetooth access device in your SlimServer PC and access SlimServer that way. I'm not sure if these devices are network-accessible - if they are, then this device can be on any machine on your network, not necessarily the one running SlimServer. I believe these devices have limited range though. - if your Squeezebox is wireless, access your router/WAP. Otherwise plug a WAP into your wired router, or replace your wired router with a wireless one. Connecting internally wouldn't cost anything provided the phone has an 802.11b/g connection. -- Mark Lanctot It's like, you know, a New Age religion, but with better treble response. - Jon Heal Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31903 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
