Re: [slim] A rant towards a rescue. Needed. NOW. ... From here to where?

2009-09-18 Thread DrNic

I'm not sure I'm in on the Mr Sinatra ethos. Though it would seem that
Logi are already thinking of removing the unknown variable to make their
user experience a predictable one.
I have always lagged behind on the server front. Why? - because until I
HAVE to change (because a new device now requires it) the current
version does what I wanted it to do now as well as I wanted it to do
then - play my music.
I have a low energy fanless server running linux already - why do I
want to(or eventually have to) buy another device to sit on my network
to do the same job. My server does more than the logi device will be
able to do (video, ftp, web, email, automation).
I don't consider my home network environment to be anything special,
and I have managed to install updates to the server (when needed)
without ever having issues. Does that make me especially lucky?
I worry we are just heading for a hooked in system that demands you use
the Logi server box. The original appeal was that I could use what I
liked, and not be dictated to about the serving hardware.
I realise this POV has many holes for others to pick at.

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-08-13 Thread DrNic

Just a quick message to say what a great little addon this is!
Absolutely no problems with the setup - it just worked!!
Now a quick question (!): say I wanted to use a program like Castripper
to record the adverts for posterity? I had a go (in the name of science
of course) and directed it to the URL with :8124 - the tray icon went
green, castripper thought it was recording something too. But alas
nothing was stored! I know it works as I use to occasionally record
Shoutcast streams for shows that I would otherwise miss... Any ideas?

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-08-13 Thread DrNic

Labarum,
You really shouldn't need to edit the ini file. When you play something
on Potify and the blue spot appears in the tray then you have to go to
Squeezecenter and use Tune in URL. Enter here the address of spotify
machine: ie if spotify is running on 192.168.1.60:8124 enter
http://192.168.1.60:8124; in the URL and tune in to it.
You should now be getting the music that you started playing on
spotify.
This works for me even bearing in mind that my spotify is running on a
seperate XP box from the SC running on a Linux server.

I tried editing the ini file so its says http://ip.add.re.ss:8124/
 (with my numbers of course).

I cannot save the ini file where it is and I have admin rights. I have
to make take a second copy from downloads and copy that into the Spotify
 folder.

Even when I do that spotify will not read the ini file (I think) - it
 report localhost 0)

 What am I doing wrong?

Do I need to take any action in SC, or will Spotify just take over the

A rather longer and more detailed readme would be a big help for dumbos

An example of exactly how the inifile should look would also be a help

Thanks guys for posting back on this - thought no-one cared :( !!!

@st2000: I have seen the MAC appear on the router (thought of that one

I need to be able to select use wireless network or use wired

So up to now I can't determine if the rest of the SB1 is working or
not...

Unfortunately the SB1G is an entirely different beast internally to the

Anyway, thankyou both for your comments, suggestions and interest, it
is greatly appreciated.

[slim] A dead VFD on an old friend

2008-08-24 Thread DrNic

Hi all,
I'm not sure if anyone can help me here, or if the founders of
Slimdevices still have any spares for good old kit!
My SB1G (manufactured March 2004) has finally given up the electrical
ghost. After some testing (out came the old AVO meter) it seems that
the VFD unit is dead. There is power getting to it, but nothing at all
on the display (not even faint glow - as others have previously seen).
I know the unit appears to work as I can see it on the network and the
optical out light is glowing. I'd like to say I was clever enough to
not have reset the device before looking into it further so I could at
least prove that audio was coming out of it! After the reset it means I
have lost all network settings. I have tried to step through the setup
process blind (removing encryption from the setup to simplify things)
but can't get it through to being seen by slimserver.
So my question:
can I still get a VFD unit spare for a SB1G? If so - how much? (is
the repair worth it?), or any other thoughts on this death of a
vintage...?!!

Thanks

Nic

PS unit previously working flawlessly - died overnight.

Not shooting your ears down here, but that isn't even a dedicated *CD*
transport!! A multi-purpose DVD player, with a reasonable good DAC. Had
good reviews in What Hi-Fi SV over here, but by no means a critical
player of CD's
It is most likely that the Denon is doing something to the CD that
makes it sound nicer to your ears. Even though the final stage is in
the AMP this still applies. Like the way somepeople prefer the sound of
MP3's to CD's (can't understand that one myself!) owing to the
psycho-acoustics and the emphasis that seems to occur on bass tones.
Either way its all a matter of what your ears are most used to, and
what you perceive as better in sound quality.

expect CD players or multi purpose DVD players to tweak the sound with
their own 'sound' like you said. That would mean every CD player around
is not creating the original sound like it is suppose to do?

EDIT: In my opinion (and correct me if I'm wrong) the digital
information is retrieved from the CD and than passed through over the
digital interface without signal processing it. The DAC in the receiver
adds possible coloring but since the DAC used is both used for the CD
signal as the SB signal, where does the difference come from?

Hey, I'm no audiophilanthropist, just pointing something out, hence my
not to shoot your ears down comment! I also acknowledge the fact that
you use the AMPS DAC rather than the Denon's.
Whilst your sentiment about the digital stream *should* be correct,
there are many factors that influence the quality of the stream - just
check out our very own audiophile forum or google on the subject. Who
knows the quality of the jitter on the denon or use of oversampling
etc??!!

Re: [slim] Double Listings in Albums

2008-02-23 Thread DrNic

A common problem I'm afraid. A search of the forum would probably turn
up a few related threads. This will undoubtably be a tag issue. iTunes
is a bit sneaky and adds its own tags - particularly inserting Disc
number tags on compilation albums. I would recommend examining the tags
carefully in a program such as MP3Tag - and delete all itunes comments,
and disc number (unless you want that!) Also ensure you don't have
multiple versions of ID3 tags.
Once you are sure you have clean tags then do a rescan of the library.
Of course if you must use itunes as your library manager you may have
to stop it re-writting the tags.

Re: [slim] CDs to lossless to aac...

2008-01-25 Thread DrNic

Hi
Good move on the switch to lossless - you using FLAC for that?
As far as knowing what the quality of burned CD's are; I don't think
there is a way to tell straight off the CD. The discs are just Red Book
standard (like your bought ones). Do you know if all of them were just
Copied from another CD - in which case it is likely that they were
copied like-for-like (ie, PCM data/RedBook) and would be good to go for
conversion to lossless. If they were burnt from files from your PC then
they may be of lower quality compressed tracks. Someone else might have
a clue how to tell?

For a compressed file format, I think there are many variables. Do you
want open source or proprietary? AAC locks you into Apples domain, MP3
is sudo non-proprietary, Ogg is the choice for Open Source I believe.
The higher the bitrate the better in compressed formats - though some
of the VBR files do a good job (try setting a minimum bitrate of 192k
if you like).

Not sure if any of the above helps... sorry!

I'd be leery of building a computer in a rackmount chassis with no

Cram it all into a tiny space and you're asking for heat related
problems. I've seen some rackmount chassis that were fanless, but
they're generally intended for building things like routers and
firewalls with either solid state drives or very little disk activity.

It was partly down to the WAF - I'm afraid. Putting the equipment under
the stairs meant no large boxes and no noise (at all). Secondly I have a
rack system (home build), that also has to accomodate a 16 port switch,
16 port patch panel, and digital home security system all of which is
rack mounted. So it kind of made sense you see.

The area is well vented - and I have allowed for a half U space between
each component. Though I appreciate the worry of heat issues, I don't
think I will have too much cause for concern, there is little intensive
disk activity going on with the current server (a Small Form Factor PC -
Shuttle). Of course I will let you all know when the system packs in
because of heat, so you can gloat!!! :)

[slim] New Home Server - Will it Run SC7?

2008-01-21 Thread DrNic

Hi all,
before laying my cash on the line, just wanted to glean the learned
opinon of the Slimdevices Fora!
I am building a new home server - there are some very specific things
it *must* be:
1) Rack mountable
2) Fanless - and I mean completely not even a PSU fan!
3) Running Linux
4) Not a NAS device - I use it for other stuff too (eg home
automation/web server)

So I have been looking around and like the idea of the self build yet
again - those Hush PC's can fit the bill, but the cost is
astronomical!
I have found this little Mini-ITX board:

I will load it up with the max (1gig) of RAM.
Will SC7 laugh at the spec??
All thoughts welcome!

I've since upgraded the VIA box to SC7 but I do miss the speed of the

Interesting, Dave. Thanks!

Does this lack of speed relate to using the web browser or the SB3

is something I rarely use.

Sorry guys, but you are slightly off the mark there...!
The link provided in my OP is one of many places that can supply
*silent* rack mount cases (ie they have an AC-DC converter that is
fanless), the motherboard stated is also fanless. The only noise
generating part will be the hard-drives - and I will mount these in
acoustic frames. They also can idle at around 14 Watts. Neither the jet

Pat's experience is no doubt drawn from his very apparent expertise

In the medical field, we have been taken over as expected by computers,

Congratulations SD/Logitech on the product announcement.
Will be watching the development after the official release.
Somthing that others may wish to consider is the Phillips Pronto Pro
TSU9400/9600. For those wanting the all encompassing universal remote
and graphical control of the SB - this is a very real alternative. I use
the old Pronto RU950, and loath having any more than one remote. Barry
Gordon and LowPro have devised the SlimPronto XCF for these IR/RF and
Wi-fi Remotes.
If I get the Squeeze Controller - I'm back to multiple remotes. I watch
with interest - remaining open minded, if the new SC is worth it I may
resort to having 2 remotes, or its the TSU9400 for me.

Re: [slim] Router issues

2007-10-09 Thread DrNic

Hi
It may have been mentioned before but there is a difference between
signal strength and quality. The SB3 only shows strength, which can be
misleading. A strong signal does not necessarily mean a quality one!
Streaming music is very different to normal browsing tasks like you
would perform on your laptop, it requires a consistently quality
signal. Have you used the laptop to see if you have other wireless
networks in the vacinity with strong signals?
Have you tried changing the wireless channel away from the Netgear
default? (if default is 6, as most are, try 1 or 11)
Wireless issues can be a pain (the exact reason i wired my house!!) and
trouble shooting even more so. If you a friend with a router (different
brand) try using it in your house with the SB3 to see if a different
combo will help
Don't give up!

I wouldn't suggest you use a PC Squeezebox in the car. But I question
the need for FLAC on a portable device to be listened to in a
non-critical environment though. Do you really need lossless when in
your car/train/tube etc? High quality MP3 is fine for this IMHO. You
then have more storage space to carry around your whole collection.
I have FLAC for my home use on the SB3's and MP3 mirror for the Sony
MP3 player, the rips are performed simultaneoulsy by EAC using MAREO,
so there is no extra work.

How about that?

Gigabit might be overkill if it is just for the one SB - but we don't

I have just wired my house with gigabit - namely because I have 3 SB3's

Back on track!
I recieved my Logitech SB3 the other day - and besides staring at the
front panel for a bit, went straight to the power supply and socket
issue.
Mine does not wobble - but I haven't actually powered it up to see if
it makes a good connection. However there is a very real difference
between the old power plug and the new.
The new one has a ridge on the end of the metal sleeve to enable it to
lock into the socket (I presume) the old did not have this (well not on
my other 2 Slimdevices SB3's anyway!). I have found this makes inserting
and removing the plug more of a brute force job than before and wonder
whether furry's initial insert may have been slightly off centre and
pushed out-of-kilter??

Slim Devices logo was an in-house job. (Could be wrong, of course.) The
Logitech logo, visually, is a nice blend of whimsy and “techy.”
Proportionally, it's nice and actively balanced, with a center of
attention at a good thirds point. I also like the way the logo is
positioned on the aluminum bezel at a point that equates to the
proportion of aluminum to plastic on the face of the unit as a whole.

I'm sure the whiteness of the logo in the photo is due to camera
 flash.

 Good job, Sean and Company!!

Hi

You obviously take your logo's very seriously. Its not that branding is
paramount, when we all know full well that how the thing sounds is most
important. I might reserve a little scepticism about the take-over
until I can see that the long term road map hasn't been completely
re-written by Logitech in favour of cheap, poor quality products with
below par customer service.
There is a reason that the Transporter doesn't have the Logitech logo
on the front, no one would seriously spend that amount of cash on a
product with that branding so prominent - and there is no argument
there I'm afraid. So why can't that transfer down the product line a
little?
I'm not against Logitech staking claim to their new baby, but (as per
my post) something a little less in yer face?

@Erland: Where exactly is the big issue with ripping/tagging?
It really isn't that difficult in my experience. I have progressed from
starting with iTunes doing it all at the very beginning to using EAC
(with MAREO) and tag tweaking (if ever necessary) with MP3Tag. Even
with the different systems and the different ID3 tag versions (for my
old MP3 files - I've matured to FLAC a while ago!) that this has
produced I must obviously be very lucky and don't have Interface

Do we _really_ need to make it so noddy proof?

My feeling is we all end up having to use a system that is aimed at the

I guess that since Logitech have bought the company this sort of make it
all simple for joe (below?) average is going to be the voice of the
masses on these forums soon. Shame.
I am all for creating the Basic and Advanced setup pages, then
those people who can barely open a word document without needing help
will be happy that their Squeezebox/Slimserver combo works with little
fuss.
Having been a (relatively) long time user, it is interesting to see the
switch to this way of thinking. I bought the SB for the exact reason
that it wasn't closed source, had regular updates, and was run by
enthusiasts. Remember the Netgear MP-101 - they had a server release
cycle of about 1 year! (and it still didn't work properly)
As for problems setting up and running SB/Slimserver - ever since SS
5.2 it has installed and run without hitch (some of my old problems
were purely related to poor tagging). But I guess you were expecting
someone with my standpoint to say that!
My request - please don't dumb down this excellent product for the mass
market; they can buy logitechs Wireless DJ system.
However, money always betters quality and I fear we may be seeing the
start of the over commercialisation of my favourite music streaming
device.

No flames intended.

forum signature as it has a link that I really need!

These are the only details I know - I hope someone (or the person

The member is male, the username is the same as his dogs name (possibly
beginning with S?),
he likes motorbikes and I think has his motorbike in the avatar. I
believe he comes from the UK!

Like I said, a bit unusual but the sig has a well needed link!!

Re: [slim] Strange remote control behavior

2007-03-11 Thread DrNic

Hi
You say everything was working fine for about a year until recently.
Did you do anything recently to your system that might have caused
this change in behaviour? Perhaps installed new software, changed
firewall/anti-virus etc, or was that the time you went over to a VM
system?

Oh yeah, the black/silver ones have disappeared!
I hope they don't put that duff logitech logo on them. Time to find the

2007-01-30 Thread DrNic

eschurr;175742 Wrote:
thanks -- that's consistent with my experience, too.

I can't see any reason to write ReplayGain tags (which only work with
smart devices like a Squeezebox) as vs. adjusting the Gain on the file
so it plays at the desired level on ANY playback device (like an
 iPod).

 Can you?

Well, this depends if you are using a lossless compression (as I do).
For MP3 you've already commited to lossing data - so altering the
volume permanently really doesn't have a significant impact - other
than if you have chosen to write the track gain values you won't be
able to swap over to the album gain values without a re-write in the
tags.
For lossless files performing the Replaygain alteration on the fly
results in a playback that is not truely lossless anymore.
Writing the tags (rather than the file) is useful if you want to be
able to switch between album track gains on the fly for either
format.
Hope that rambling makes some sense!!

2007-01-29 Thread DrNic

eschurr;175136 Wrote:
 Can anyone explain this?

I have a sample MP3 file where SlimServer shows a volume adjustment
value of -13.50 (i think it came from an iTunNorm tag).

 Check this out:

 1. use MP3Tag to delete the iTunNorm tag. There were no ReplayGain
 values in the files.
 2. In Slimserver, clear library, rescan
 3. Slimserver shows no volume adjustment (this makes sense)
 4. In MP3Gain, load the track. Run track analysis. it shows a track
 adjustment value of -4.5
 5. Go to MP3Tag for the same file. It shows a ReplayGain value of
 -9.26!
 6. Go to Slimserver: clear library, rescan
 7. Slimserver shows a volume adjusment value of -9.26 (this matches
what MP3Tag shows, but is different than what MP3Gain shows, wich
 generated the value)
 8. In Foobar2000, advanced edit: shows ReplayGain value of -4.745
(this matches what MP3Gain showed during Track Analysis but is
 different from MP3Tag and Slimserver)
 9. MP3Gain: Undo, remove tags from files
 10. MP3Tag: no replay gain value (makes sense)
 11. Foobar2000: no replay gain value (makes sense)
 12. Foobar2000: scan per-file track gain. shows value of -9.27
 13. MP3Tag: shows replaygain value of -9.27
 14. MP3Gain: Track analysis shows value of -4.5 (huh?)
 15. MP3Tag: shows ReplayGain value of -4.5
 16. FooBar2000 advanced edit: shows value of -9.27
 17 SlimServer. Clear library, rescan.
 18. Slimserver: volume adjustment value of -4.75

 What is going on here?

Hi
Does this not just show the difference between the reference values set
between ReplayGain MP3Gain?
MP3Gain can have a user defined value therefore when you are IN that
program if you analyse the track and your reference value is set to
93dB - the values in the list below it are referenced to this value.
Going into MP3Tag or Foobar - shows you the stored replaygain value
which is always referenced to 89dB (I think).
MP3Gain will let you change the reference point (as said above) but his
only works when the value is written to the file (ie the track data is
altered - rather than reading a value from a tag). Otherwise the
analysis value stored to tag is like the value stored to tag from
Foobar's Replaygain...

Hope that makes some sense!!

Hi Jan
If you are doing this via the remote on your Squeezebox then the X
denotes that that genre is selected (sort of self-explantory as if you
select the first option all genres then the X is in that choice).
Other than scrolling through the genres on the SB display to check
those you have selected I see no other way to confirm the selection -on

I do not know if there is a walk through guide for this - have you
checked in the Wiki?

Can I just ask, as I have never looked, how much memory these processes

I wonder why it is so important that these processes be killed for you

we are talking only 5-10 k per process then wheres the harm?

therefore SlimServer isnÂ’t running), the display just goes blank, at

SlimServer. While in this state, can I conclude that itÂ’s basically
“turned off” and won’t display any messages that are transmitted by the
SqueezeNetwork OR SlimServer? Then, to turn back on, I just hit the

Might this be a reliable way to “turn off” the device, to avoid
receiving messages from the SqueezeNetwork during the night, and that
actually pulling the plug, or putting a granola box over it, may not
 be necessary?

Yes, NauticusLX, this is the ideal work-around and is indeed exactly
what I do if I want the boxes off (for want of a better word to
describe the obvious non-off state!).
However, be warned, if for some unknown reason your router power
cycles, messages will be displayed (normally, Can't find slimserver,
briefly as your computer is still off).

Whilst I appreciate your panic frustration at this problem, my only
comment on this whole debacle is that the initial post was perhaps too
aggressive for its purpose. I, like others too, am not woken by small

Never had a problem setting up my players - from my first SB1 through

Lets not dumb down the product for this idiot Joe Blow (?!), even

I am no fool, and realise that progress will occur with the

just to suit the masses. Slimdevices haven't done all that bad to now
have they?

For the sake of Jim (welcome BTW!); what sells the device when people

All I ask (like most on here) is that the current relationship between
SD and its customers (you know - the ones who put you in a position to
be bought out?!) is retained. And that when I buy (or if I buy)
another squeezebox it isn't emblazoned with Logitech across its
beautiful brushed aluminium front.

I really hope this doesn't spell the end for a product that has somehow
become more than a piece of hardware.

Remember your roots SD team

Artwork a much less of a concern, as it is collected by a separate
 process, cached by the server
and somewhat more easily left out by not selecting 'gallery mode'.
The original pref was put in becuase it was a very long post-scan
 process
plus affected the presence of the browse artwork option, and caused it

to take a very long time to load. The appearance of single artworks on

song pages and album pages was not the main reason for that pref.

 -kdf

Thanks
Firstly in reply to ceejay - I was meaning actually turning off looking
for artwork at all (like in older SS releases), have already discovered
the joys of the gallery!! But thanks for putting a thought forward! :)

However, I gather from KDF's post that SS isn't as bogged down by
artwork as the older servers were. But why is this still in SS 6.5 help
section then?! :)

Memory usage for Artwork

Artwork for large song libraries places a significant memory load on
the slimserver. There are references to the cover art kept in memory of
the SlimServer for each song. This can add up fairly quickly.

The SlimServer stores, in memory, the path where the artwork can be
found for each song. Long path names and many songs can cause the
SlimServer to use more memory than is phycially installed on the
server. This can have any of a number of impacts, from slow performance
to complete failure of the SlimServer to run. The raw artwork file is
read on demand, so artwork file size has no impact on the SlimServer
itself.

You can turn off the artwork scan completely to save memory usage. Its
in Server Settings, additional, performance.

This is what I was originally referring to and hope to avoid - even if
it means no artwork at all

Thanks

artwork can seriously clog a large library down, which is why I think
the option to disable it was originally there, are we supposed to
manually remove artwork if performance is hit by a growing library?

Thanks for replying aubuti,
Thought that some things may be a design intention
Turning off artwork would be useful though - I thought that it made a
huge impact on the database keeping track of the artwork such that
large libraries could grind to a halt with artwork (irrespective of
image size - as it is the database links that hit performance)?

2006-09-23 Thread DrNic

Hi all!
Just upgraded my 6.2.2 server to the latest final 6.5 build - was
very particular to erase all traces of old install then install new
one. Glad to say it went smoothly, and I am now listening via my SB3
with no problems so far!! Excellent!
I have a few questions if you don't mind - they may be intended
behaviours but its nice to know!!

1) On the old 6.2.2 I had a fully working Pronto NG ccf file: now this
seems to partially broken. I had direct buttons to access the settings
page and others that performed more basic functions such as brightness
(!) but these no longer work - some doing just nothing others going
straight to a blank screen (mini analogue VU still bouncing away
happily!). Has the IR map changed? Is there a list of HEX codes (full
hex) for the new map?

2) There no longer appears to be the option of deleting album art
placeholders (in the new gallery view on my favourite fishbone skin) -
so now I have lots of ? placeholders along with my (slowly) growing
collection of album covers. Has this option been removed totally?

I thinks thats all for now, but will post any other (dumb?) questions
as I find them!!

Many thanks

Nic

[slim] Re: ShoutCAST problems?

2006-08-09 Thread DrNic

Thanks for the replies
I have tried the alternate streams already - but no good.
Anyway, I think my particular problems run a bit deeper now...
After a little more exhaustive testing I have found that after a period
of, say 20 minutes, ALL of the internet radio streams exhibit the
stuttering behaviour - darn!!
Can't think why ShoutCast displays the symptoms first, but it is now
apparent on Pandora/Slimpicks/RadioIO and ShoutCast - regardless of
local or Squeezenetwork feed...
Could it be that my ADSL connection is having trouble continously
streaming data? I don't seem to have issues with normal browsing.
My next test is to see how iTunes radio copes.
Thanks again

Nic

PS Why are all RadioIO streams now only 32 kbps?

[slim] ShoutCAST problems?

2006-08-08 Thread DrNic

Hi all!
Is anyone else noticing a problem with ShoutCAST?
Either via Squeezenetwork or Slimserver I get stuttering playback -
this was never a problem previously!
I thought that it might be my new internet connection (had to go ADSL 2
- after a move, previously on cable) but after having no problem with
Pandora, radioIO, or SlimPicks I think otherwise!
Had a go at directly tuning in the stations I like via Slimserver and
again, no problems!
I'm not sure what is going on, searched the forums but no one else
seems to be experiencing these problems.
Any ideas?

Nic

PS just to clarify (!) - NO problems with pandora/radioIO or even
direct tune in!

[slim] Re: Streaming AAC?

2006-05-22 Thread DrNic

cepheid Wrote:
 Hi all,

I tried searching the forums but came up empty so I thought I'd ask...
is there any way for SlimServer to stream AAC rather than mp3? I'm
specifically talking about streaming to internet clients, i.e. pointing
xmms, iTunes, or some other player to http://SlimServer
URL:9000/stream.mp3 ... that URL is clearly only for mp3. Is there a
similar URL for streaming AAC (stream.m4a perhaps)? I couldn't find
mention of this in the docs either, so I'm thinking that this is not
 supported.

If this functionality does not exist, would it be possible to include
it? If my library is encoded as AAC then I would not want to transcode
it to MP3 prior to streaming... since iTunes can handle streaming AAC
just fine, I'd like to be able to point it to my SlimServer and listen
to my AAC files as is.

I understand that SlimServer would not be able to transcode non-AAC
files into AAC, as it currently does for MP3 (since it can convert all
other formats into MP3)... basically what I'm looking for is simply a
way to bypass the MP3 transcoding and just stream the AAC files
 directly.

 Any thoughts?

AFAIK, slimserver can't do this.
It can stream in MP3, WAV (PCM), FLAC and (I think) WMA but other
formats have to be transcoded on the server.
It sounds like you are only using the software, and don't have a
hardware squeezebox, otherwise you wouldn't be so fussed about using
iTunes to listen to your stream. Another thought though, can't iTunes
share its music library across the network? I know this would negate the
need for Slimserver, but I can't see why you would be so tied to iTunes.
If using a real Squeezebox the AAC files can be made to stream
uncompressed (WAV) or into FLAC so you don't take the double hit of
transcoding to another lossy format.
I hope this helps..?

[slim] SQL Databse help various artist behaviour

2006-03-15 Thread DrNic

Hi all
With reference to my previous thread
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21857) which has
dropped off the radar on this board, I wonder whether anyone can help
me with this..?
I find that the tracks are ordered by artist rather than track number
for compilation albums when I have Slimserver set to Compilation album
mode (ie various artist field on artist browse). This is only on the
Web UI, everthing is fine on the Squeezebox. Running 6.22 on a WinXP
machine. All tags are correct (I swear!) using mostly FLAC, with no ID3
tags at all.
I would love to know if this is expected behaviour. If you browse the
offending albums via Artist various artist album name then the
tracks are ordered by number as expected. If you browse by music folder
the tracks are ordered by number (as I have the track number in the file
name). Only when browsing by album, genre, or artwork do the tracks get
wrongly ordered.

Looking at the SQL database, specifically at the MULTIALBUMSORTKEY, I
notice that the start of this field has the artist name for each song,
for non compilation albums there is the single artist name (seems
sensible to me).

Can anyone, please, just clarify if this is the expected behaviour of
browsing (via the Web UI) whilst utilising the various artist feature
for compilation albums. Then I can just leave this be, or more
correctly file an enhancement request to put it back to track number!!

Thanks in advance,

Nic

I would recommend that the initial firmware upgrade be performed in

Then see where you get with the wireless connectivity.

Hi, and welcome!
You could have started a new thread, perhaps in the Beginners forum,
but it doesn't really matter!!
You need to go to the Server settings page in the web interface.
Depending on which skin you are using depends on where this will be. In
the default skin it is listed in the left hand pane somewhere down the
page.
The first page of the server settings has the option to use ITunes.
You can let slimserver find the database file for iTunes itself (the
XML file) or tell it where to find it yourself. This option is in the
iTunes page of server settings.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Ceejay for mulling this one over for me!
This has got me stumped too.
What really bakes my cookie is the fact that on the physical SB3 the
order is fine, no matter what method of browsing is used!!!
I'm confused... :(
I have gone over the files with a fine toothed comb and can say that
there are only VOrbis comments (no ID3 at all) on the FLAC files,
obviously on the few remaining MP3 there are ID3 tags but these can't
be interfering with SS interpretation of the FLAC files, surely?!

Next I suppose I need to look at the database, not sure what I am
supposed to look for though...!
Thanks again for the help!

[slim] Re: I know I've asked this before, but.... (!)

2006-03-10 Thread DrNic

OK, sorry for keep replying to my own thread!
I searched the forums and found KDF's original instructions for
browsing the SQLite db, when I first voiced this problem back in
december...
He suggested looking at the MULTIALBUMSORTKEY value for the tracks.
Now using my laptop with a smaller music library, still using the old
MP3's from iTUNES import, I note that the order is correct in all views
(Browse Albums, Browse Music Folder, and Browse Artists-Various Artists)
for the compilation albums.
Looking at this db value (multialbumsortkey) I see that it is formed
like this:

THRILLSEEKERS CHILLOUT SESSION 03 WINTER COLLECTION DISC 2 01 LOVE
STORY

This is for the first track (hence 01 and track name)
Now for the subsequent tracks only the last part changes ie 02 POOR
LENO instead of 01 LOVE STORY.

This differs from my main library and server setup, which continues to
display the track order alphabetically!

For the same album it is this:

THRILLSEEKERS CHILLOUT SESSION 03 WINTER COLLECTION DISC 2 01 LOVE
STORY

ROYKSOPP CHILLOUT SESSION 03 WINTER COLLECTION DISC 2 02 POOR LENO

etc

I note that the artist name preceding the album name is changing with
each track.
Could this be the reason that the list is being ordered by artist
instead of track number?
If so then why is the last tracks artist (you'll have to trust me that
the last track on disc 2 of The Chillout session 03 - winter collection
is by Thrillseekers!) been used for all the track entries in the
working version - is this a critical entry to make the order by track
number?

Am I on the right track? What server option would need to be changed to
get my desired behaviour, or do I have to edit the db by hand every time
i rescan? (ouch!)
Could someone please offer an opinion for me.
I hope this post explains the situation well enough... :)

[slim] I know I've asked this before, but.... (!)

2006-03-07 Thread DrNic

Hi all
A while back I commented that on my system (currently running SS 6.2.2
- 5448 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252, with a SB3) if an album was a
compilation album then the server would not list the tracks in track
order. I thought this might have been an iTunes/mp3 issue so have held
off whilst I converted over to FLAC, but it still persists.
To clarify via the web browser (Firefox 1.0.7) - in the left hand pane,
viewing a compilation album (FLAC) the tracks are not in number order
but seem to be ordered by the performing artist alphabetically.
However, if the album is selected to play as a whole then the tracks
appear correctly in the player pane on the right hand side. Also the
SB3 itself lists the tracks in correct order, even when browsing the
album itself (like viewing the left pane on the browser).
Is there a way to correct this behaviour?

Thanks

versions of firmware and server. Researching issues about the
Squeezebox ahead of time might improve your experience. If the wireless
device in the squeezebox fails or acts weird, be prepared to return the
unit to Slim Devices for a full refund or repair.

Prepare a nice spot for the Squeezebox where you will be able to read
the display, and place the unit away from sources of interference, such
as 2.4GHz cordless phones. Have a good surge protector ready for the
 Squeezebox power adaptor.

Although some valid points are raised, there is just a heavy tinge of
pessimism in this post...
Sure, some people do experience these problems - you don't have to
search too hard on the forums to find them, but there are easily 100's
(if not 1000's?) to each one of these that just plug'n'play. I was
one of these, both with my old SB1G the new SB3 (all wireless, may I
add)

In answer to the OP Q's:
Check out the plugins section of the website to see if what you are
looking for is there.
Plugin installation is usually no more painful than downloading the
plugin (.pm file, I think) and plonking it in your plugins directory. A
reboot of the server usually brings the plugin to the attention of the
slimserver.

Question: Could a wireless enabled iPod overtake the Squeezebox as a
network music player?

- Yes - I want my wireless iPod yesterday!
- No - nothing will pry my Squeezebox from my cold, dead, hands!
- Meh - it could cause some defection but not kill Slim entirely...

I don't own one, and don't want one..
So this doesn't make me fear for Slim at all.
I don't agree with KenF that what he states makes the iPod superior in
almost every respect at all. But YMMV.
You are stuck with Apples laws on playing your music, and you need to
pick it up to see what is playing (further info obviously).
But I'm sure the droves of white ear bud wearing sheep will go out and
buy it in their masses.
