I'm going to be VERY generous here. Plex is at least 10 years (of full-time development) behind LMS. Again, that's being VERY generous. I'm not holding my breath for Plex to have caught up in 10 years. I let it scan my music library, but playback is almost exclusively via LMS with iPeng as a controller - I can render/play the music on almost every device throughout my home, plus portables (Squeeeboxes, iPhones, iPads, AndroidTV, AppleTV, AVR/AVP, etc.) Bruno *'Twisted Melon - IR remote solutions for Mac, Boxee Box, Windows and Linux' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103565 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It's either always there or never there. My vote is handle them both and toss it into a preference. The app already has a ton of preferences, one more isn't going to break it. ;) My only suggestion at this point is to change the behavior of the A..Z letters at the right side of the screen when scrolling lists. iPeng 7 has been broken with respect to this - the letters (quick jump way to navigate) should always remain static, just like in every other iOS app. However, in iPeng their layout changes when the heading at the top appears and disappears. This means if you try to use those letters to scroll down, you will never be able to stop on the letter you want. More than frustrating, it's actually infuriating. ;) Bruno *'Twisted Melon - IR remote solutions for Mac, Boxee Box, Windows and Linux' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102134 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

No. Only if you're considering using the menu bar. If you don't want to have an option, leave it hidden at all times. Which is why I cast a vote for no menu. ;) I know, the problem is that would mean I'd have to re-implement the navigation logic. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I consider this a significant bug and one that doesn't affect any other app I've seen. I can't offer you a suggestion of how to address the issue from a code perspective because I'e never seen your source, but if it involves a complete app redesign then I think there are more issues here than I know about. ;) With respect to the letters always being there, I'm not sure what the issue is with that. The only instance where you would hide that column entirely is when there are fewer entries than the height of the screen. You can, what you need to do is touch the bar and then move to the letter you want, then you can get the exact letter you are trying to find. I do all kinds of things to deal with that UI issue, but none of them are very good workarounds. The menu is defined by the server so as long as it's not loaded, iPeng can't use it, it doesn't know how the menu looks like, it can change any time. The menu will be different on each server you connect to and - even worse - it's per-player so it can even change when you switch to a different player. Too many variables. I'm talking about the APP's menu at the bottom, not the player menu. Not sure why an app menu would would be saved to the server, so I'm assuming you thought I was talking about the player menu. Re: [slim] iPeng, your iPhone Squeezebox Remote, gets even better with version 2.0!
How do you shuffle play an entire album? There's no shuffle mode when adding tracks to the current play list. If the volume is locked on a player (when using as a remote) please hide the volume slider and move the transport controls down. Please consider switching to larger transport buttons on black background the same way that Apple has in their music player. The multiplayer control is still about as confusing as it always was. I can barely tell players apart and other people who don't use iPeng are completely lost when they open that UI. There just isn't a decent grouping/delineation for each player and its associated controls. Better colors/border can improve it, but the best solution would need a refactoring of the UX/UI. Swiping left and right on the Now Playing screen should stop when it reaches the last screen on the right or left. The current wrapping is unexpected. I would also recommend moving the lyrics somewhere else. Having the current track in the middle screen means you can't swipe blindly to get back to it. See Fitts' Law. Consider offering a dark UI option - yes, you'll have to include dark versions of your button graphics. The light color is not to everyone's taste and can be a big distraction when operating the remote in a darker room. As a future update, consider support for LRC format lyrics and the ability to display the current position with the lyrics - bouncing-ball or karaoke style. Soundhound does this for songs it samples for instance. Re: [slim] Customising the display on Players
The classic players have a dot matrix display, not a one line display, and can be made, through settings and/or plugins to display anything you want. The remote features a size button that switches between three different display modes (or layouts), but via plugins you can do anything. The web settings allows you to set your default track information and you can use variables to affect what is displayed and how. You can define various sets of information and then configure each player's output to be uniquely different from what is displayed in the web UI if you want. Can you share any more details about any changes to Landscape view? It's been needing updating for a long time and it will be very welcome when you can do everything in this orientation. Back to what's been shown already... How about an option to remove the volume slider at the bottom? That will remove a totally useless UI element and make more room on the screen. Here are the ways that already exist to adjust volume: hardware volume buttons volume buttons on headphones volume buttons on speaker dock volume knob/buttons on amplifier Honestly, I can't see any point in time where using an on-screen volume slider would be more useful than hardware buttons that will be present in nearly every usage scenario. I'd also love to see the YEAR of the album displayed. Does this new version of iPeng preserve one's customized menu along the bottom? Even when iPeng doesn't connect to the server right away? Re: [slim] iPeng 2.0 Teaser Thread
Do you store different configurations of iPeng's icon row depending on the server one is connected to? If not, then the user's choice should be reflected as soon as the app loads - it looks strange having the icons suddenly change. Also, when we dismiss the tips/help one time, will they now stop coming back? With the previous/current releases I can't remember how many different times I have to cancel/dismiss the tips/help. Here's my situation for the volume control: When I'm using iPeng as a player, I never use the slider for volume. Either the iPhone is locked and one doesn't have access to the screen anyway, so the hardware buttons are used. If I wake the display, I continue to use the hardware buttons because that's what I was already using. If the phone is docked, then the docks I use already have more easily reached volume controls that work whether the screen is on or off - or the iPhone is being remotely controlled with the dock's remote or another instance of iPeng. If the phone is being used as a remote it means I'm primarily controlling my hifi system and I keep Squeezebox output fixed at 100% - why would I use the volume control on a source component when that's the job of the pre-amp? The volume is controlled only via the pre-amp and/or a universal controller. I suggested it as an OPTION so if someone wants to continue to use the on-screen slider they can feel free to do so. I do realize that Apple's own music app also features an on-screen volume slider, but that App is so poorly designed I don't know where to start. For regular music playback I tend to use CarTunes already, which while not perfect, is a lot better than the stock player app. What bugs me the most about the standard playback app/infrastructure is the complete lack of a now-playing playlist which can be modified on the fly. It's full albums or nothing right now. Which I believe is one of the reasons you're seeing some people asking for playback of local music. You really should consider taking your UI and refining it into another app for local playback. It will be quite a bit of additional work, but I think there's a good market for alternative music players. Most of the third-party ones are very (very) bad. For someone else, there is no new user that doesn't know about the hardware volume buttons on the phone. That's frankly a little preposterous, since the hardware buttons are the primary way, the de-facto way, to adjust volume on the iPhone. Re: [slim] Why Logitech SB is the best thing since sliced bread!
If you want to see how a mass-market product is, well, marketed, look at the iPod, iPhone and iPad. Look at most people's music collection in iTunes. Then imagine (or verify) how that would play out with SB. Collectors (us/we) are a rare breed and always have been, it doesn't matter what decade you look to, 50's, 60's, etc. I don't believe Logitech have the required design talent in the positions required, or with the power, to make this happen. At least they have not until today. Besides mice and keyboards, their most mass-market product is the Harmony series of remotes, which in my opinion, while they have used their distribution experience/leverage to move and promote the product, they have not made it any better. They have no engineered a better mouse trap than the one they acquired. The same can be said for Squezebox. Logitech have not made any significant changes to improve the product since they acquired the technology. The remote have done well for them, but could be a lot better. Squeezebox has apparently not done so well and we all know could be much better as well. Re: [slim] Why Logitech SB is the best thing since sliced bread!
The new products are coming about primarily because SB is not easy to use and completely inaccessible to the general public. I love the flexibility of SB and have been using it since 2006, but this product line and the server software are not mass-market products and can never be without drastic change. IMO, it would be easier to start almost from scratch with the design/development than it would be to try and patch the music server to make it more accessible. Which is pretty much what you're seeing Logitech doing now - they're using the same code base, but from a presentation standpoint, they're refactoring everything. They need to in hopes to gain at least some little relevance in music. The SB product line is really a non-contender in the market up until now. Re: [slim] What if Logitech pulls the plug
Streaming services and the like are replacing radio, not music ownership. If you look at music purchases historically, including the yardsticks by which sales awards are given, you'll see that music ownership has always been comprised of a rather insignificant proportion of the music listenership. I'm not one to make bets, but if I were, I'd have no problem wagering that iTunes (or its Apple-owned derivative) will be around in 10 years time. Spotify and Pandora? I wouldn't make bets for that kind of longevity. I don't think I'd feel comfortable predicting they'll still be around in 3 years, let alone 10. Unless free streaming services all go away, I don't believe that pay streaming/rental services will realize the big money in this industry. Just look at how many of those companies/services have folded. It's like clock-work. That said, Logitech hasn't done anything with Squeezebox. At least with Harmony they managed to significantly grow the business and make it the de-facto non-disposable universal remote brand. Sonos by comparison has much greater brand recognition. Honestly, if it weren't for iPeng and the other third-party software supporting this platform, I think it would be in far more dire straights than it is now. Re: [slim] Squeezeplay is
Frankly, the only reason I even use Squeezeplay is because Squeezeslave causes my MacBook Pro to take an extra 20 to 30 seconds to go to sleep. Even though I have multiple Squeezeboxes, I also have a baby in the house, so I have to listen to music tied to headphones when I'm tied to my computer working. Using the computer itself for the audio source aids in mobility. Squeezeplay is different from other software solutions precisely because of SBS. Unlike other solutions, it makes for a really nice UI using the web interface and/or a program like iPeng. This is still a geeky solution and I agree, it's not the primary reason a typical consumer wouldn't pick up a SB. It takes only a little bit less setup than a real player. ;) And Squeezeplay is also sufficiently buggy that it would probably piss some people off - after some number of tracks, the Web UI and the SP UI itself will no longer show the actual track being played, but one previous in the playlist. Even some of the more rare 12 singles material - this has been a challenge. I haven't played any of them in a long time, so it's likely some of them will no longer play correctly due to less than stellar storage practices. ;) -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80811 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Turn off SqueezeTray message about new version?
Is there any way to turn off the incessant notification message from SqueezeTray about a new version being available? It bugs me to no end that someone would implement such a poor design as to have such a message come up continuously. I don't have the time to keep up with nightly builds right now, so I just want to run the rather stable 7.5.0. 7.5.1 was a huge mistake and really killed performance and usability of the web interface and scanner for my installation. Equally, I don't have the time/patience to give it another go. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80815 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge
Wow, I didn't expect such a backlash. If you don't want people to use your player, maybe you shouldn't spend time developing it? Seriously, what's with the attitude? I spend my time testing it to give you feedback. I spend my time downloading a number of betas and alphas and reporting back exactly what's going on, including debug output. And then I get insulted? Gee, thanks. Do you know why it's important for a portable to be put to sleep? So the hard drive gets parked is the primary. Moving around a machine while the disk is spinning isn't a good thing. If you don't care about that, then that's your choice, but don't brush it off as insignificant. I also didn't say anything about the issue being a show stopper. I thought I was being nice and helpful by testing a current beta and letting you know what the state was under specific architecture. You should at least include a disclaimer or other warning telling people that having this installed in Mac OS X will prevent their system from going to sleep for 20 to 30 seconds. BTW, I normally press the OFF button to tell Squeezebox Server to disconnect from the player before sleeping the machine. Leaving it playing while sleeping was just another test to provide you with as much information as possible. And a you know, it doesn't make a difference to the no-sleep whether or not Squeezeslave is playing anything. Your program is useful, maybe you should attach a price to it if you're disappointed that you have to burn time working on it. I'd pay for it. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63966 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge
Tested: build 133 doesn't respect Mac OS sleep notification. System still takes up to 20+ seconds to go to sleep if squeezeslave is installed/running. Also, if the computer is put to sleep while music is playing, it will not resume playing when it wakes. squeezeslave will come back up and continue to consume CPU resources as if it's playing, but no audio can be heard. Pausing and then playing again brings the audio back. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63966 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] [ANN] Squeemote 1.3.4 approved for sale
You may want to update your web site. The release notes for instance has you releasing updates backwards in history. If you've been able to do this, I'd rather buy your time machine. ;) Also, you may want to show complete screen shots on the web site - like when you click the cropped images on the main page, zoom to a full (non-rotated) image. The web, the traditional place for virtual software sales, is going to become more and more important to distinguish an iPhone app. The App store is overcrowded and that's not likely to change any time soon. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76256 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?
Implementation of a feature isn't illegal unless you're thinking about ripping off copyright holders. There are plenty of companies out there ready to license data. Cost is and will always be the main factor. Logitech has plenty of contacts and money to work on some additional licensing deals. That said, it's easy enough to get lyrics into your tags ahead of time. But yes, I can see the appeal to fetching them and artwork on-demand, since after all this is a connected device. ITunes sucks for many reasons. Its UI, when browsing local music, is not one of those. There is no music management app for any platform with as much functionality nor as usable a UI. I don't necessarily think it's the right UI for a media pad, nor does it make the best playback UI. Whatever gets implemented, just make sure that there is a way to have the screen filled completely with an album art grid. In other words, if there's a split pane showing Now Playing make it able to be turned off/on. Also make sure there's a Now Playing that focuses solely on what's now playing and possibly some info of what's coming next, but not the previous grid navigation. In other words, this doesn't need to be a rehash of the web interface. Because one can already hit the web interface if that's what they want. :) I'd have no problems paying $20 for a new version of iPeng if it supported playback on top of all this. And I suspect thousands of other people feel the same way. Imagine how many people are out there, currently without Squeezebox hardware that might be interested in being able to use iPeng as a player along with a server installation? No one is going to convince the mass-market that the audio quality out of the iPod or iPad isn't good enough. Most listeners here don't have the rest of the equipment to ever notice a difference either. I've already got 2 classic SB3 and a radio on the way, and I can still appreciate and desire iPeng with playback support for use on either iPhone/iPod or iPad. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74581 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?
Just an FYI, 600x600 is about the mid-size of my artwork. Generally I only have smaller for things that I have been too lazy to scan when I haven't been able to find a larger size. I prefer artwork that's over 1000x1000 and some of my tracks have closer to 2000x2000 artwork. You'd probably do well to have support for something around 600x600 but also offer support for larger in the case of a screen saver. Copying the Squeezebox Touch interface is not the way to go. I'd love to see multiple modes of picking albums, including a list similar to the current iPeng (but larger) and of course an album cover wall, even if it didn't have adjustable cover size. You should probably strongly focus on making sure that you can access everything from either orientation. Forcing someone to turn the device is not a good idea. You can see this in the iPhone's own iPod app where turning the device is the only way to do cover flow - and it's the only thing you can do in that orientation. The new iPod app on the iPad looks a lot better than any of Apple's previous efforts, but it shouldn't be to difficult to make something even more spectacular for iPeng. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74581 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] still no presentation-layer dedupe of albums
You mentioned corrected tags, yet your music collection is anything but correct. IMO, you're looking for a solution to be implemented universally for a problem that is singular to your system that you yourself have created. You can, as suggested, fix your music collection. Much faster than a database query. If you only want the BEST copy to exist in SBS, then learn how to use file system links to show SBS what you want while hiding the rest. Much cleaner and definitely not ambiguous like your proposed solution. If you don't see the issues in the solution you're proposing then you're not looking at anything close to the whole picture. Your issue is an extreme corner case but you believe that it can be fixed by a simple query without actually looking at how SBS currently handles tracks and populates its own DB. Then you ignore additional common and corner cases that will most definitely affect others when implementing your suggestion. You may want to look at the source code - which you may find easy enough to insert your query into, thereby solving your unique issue. Just a suggestion. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74288 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

You're always going to see negative comments, that will never change. Even when a product is the best of its class, or like the Squeezebox line, simply the best. So, squeeeslave will come back from sleep properly if the machine is only asleep for a little while. Anything over X amount of time means it will not show up in the player list. That much I have confirmed through repeated sleep cycles. What I haven't done is timed exactly where the threshold is. Here's he log file with -dall starting with a fresh boot and launch of squeezeslave, then putting the machine to sleep for a long while, returning without it in the player list, using the machine for a while and then unloading. At no point in this run did I play any music. Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge
I understand what the intentions of the params are. I'm saying the behavior from the UI is exactly the same as it used to be before. If it doesn't show up, Squeezeslave does not come back, ever.It doesn't matter how long one waits nor how many times the web page is refreshed. If you notice in the console log I posted, squeezeslave doesn't respond to the system wake up event within a time limit mentioned there. I had my machine sleeping all night and this morning, the squeezeslave binary is running but nothing appears in the player list. I've now had the machine awake and running for an hour and have refreshed the web UI multiple times. The only way to get it showing up again is to unload the daemon and reload it. Or kill the process and let it reload automatically. Also as mentioned, I can't say for sure when it fails completely versus when it works. Sometimes when waking from sleep it's still listed and will play perfectly fine. If you'd like to send up another version with additional logging capabilities, I'll gladly capture another log file for you and put it up on my own web space so you can download it (the forum only allows about 9k of text). -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63966 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Sleep/wake doesn't always make squeezeslave disappear from the player list. Only sometimes and I still don't know exactly when. BTW, when it stops its process is still running - it just doesn't appear in the player list of SBS. In your Mac instructions you might want to suggest using Lingon to create the launchd plist instead of having people edit manually the sample. It will make sure the format is correct and put it in the right place. It also allows you to input the command line params the same way you would in a terminal. The example plist in the Mac instructions doesn't work with Snow Leopard . The arguments must all be split into their own strings wherever there is a space on the command line. But. It causes the machine to take an inordinate amount of time to go to sleep, even when it's just idle (off). About an order of magnitude more time in fact. Issuing the sleep command while not running Squeezeslave takes about 1 second for the machine to blank its display. With Squeezeslave running but off from the Web UI (0% CPU utilization) it takes 10 or more seconds. The reason I'm running (and interested in) Squeezeslave is because of its low CPU utilization and because it doesn't have nor does it need a UI. When idle it takes no CPU time at all. It can also ignore local volume. This enables me to play music on my work notebook controlled solely through the web UI with volume controlled by the Mac itself. Squeezeplay by comparison has UI that I don't need to use, including taking up a spot in the dock. It also takes crazy CPU cycles for a music player. Even when it's off or idle (paused) it's still taking crazy cycles upwards of 10%. iTunes takes a fraction of that while playing as another comparison. It's not a deal breaker, but it's getting a bit annoying closing the notebook and not having the machine go to sleep right away. Or issuing a sleep command and having the screen stay lit up for 10 to 15 seconds. Another interesting thing is that you must set up your property list for launchd with keepalive on. Otherwise when you come back from sleep, the webUI won't see Squeezeslave at all. The only other niggle I have is that the webUI always identifies it as Squeezeslave 2 - I've changed this in the webUI settings, but it's seemed to revert back after some time. Maybe when coming back from sleep... It would be nice to supply the display name as an argument the same way we can already supply the MAC address. Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?
With Myth you are either running the server in place of a client or you're running another PC as a client. Both solutions require a PC capable of decoding the streams you're sending to it. A decent spec CPU for HD unless you have a chipset of GPU capable of offloading the decode or assist. NVIDIA's ION platform has a lot of promise, but it's over-priced and all solutions with it in a small form factor are currently extremely costly, completely obliterating the promise it has as a viable extender platform earlier this year (it was easy to predict). The most cost effective and highest performance will come from dedicated silicon with built-in decoders such as those from Sigma Designs. These Systems on a Chip can do pretty much everything you need for your TV-based video playback. SageTV and Sage's HD Theater (HD200) have been mentioned earlier in the thread. They're currently not only the best solution for video streaming, they're the only solution with an integrated PVR server. This is the direction MythTV has supposedly been moving in, but there's currently no stand-alone SoC (absolutely quiet) extenders for Myth. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40689 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I was talking about the front end, that's why I said decode - analog capture cards or tuner sticks that don't have built-in MPEG2 or H.264 encoders should not be considered by anyone at any price for any reason. For digital there's no encoding necessary as the cards are just recording what they're receiving (clear-QAM, ATSC, DVB, etc..) Newegg has a fanless ION mobo/Atom CPU combo for less than $120. You could put together a near-silent (or possibly even totally silent) front-end for well under $500. $500 is a ton of cash to spend on a front end, especially when you may want 3 or 4 of them. The ION platform was promising this for under $200 and that's what all the Myth fans were raving about. Solutions using a SoC offer sub $200 completely fanless ability today. No Apple system will compare favorably to the price of a netbook, but you can't buy an equivalent system from any other top-tier manufacturer and save more than $100. But savings aside, the systems are worth at least 2x their monetary cost in peace of mind, longevity and usability. Running Plex or Boxee on a Mac makes it a client or an appliance, not a server. The server is the system that the Plex or Boxee front end would stream content from. Any mini makes a decent machine for Squeeze Server. Of course if you really want the web interface to fly you're going to want at least a dual quad-core Xeon instead. :) But if you're never going to interact with the OS, you might as well run Linux on some cobbled together hardware that isn't as pretty nor durable, but may be faster and cheaper. IMO, that's the only way an album list should work, since listing absolutely all albums in one's collection alphabetically and not grouped by artist is rather pointless. Or rather the point would be better reached using a search feature (which iPend also has). I will go one step further since I haven't seen it mentioned yet (I'm only in the middle of this thread so far). I'd like albums listed BY YEAR under an artist, not alphabetically. At least a preference to do this to match the feature found in the web skins. Further, I'd like compilation albums (Various Artists) that the current artist appears on to be listed at the END of their date-sorted proper albums (and possibly with a heading that states they're VA). That would in fact be an improvement over the web skins. When clicking on a VA album entry under an artist I'd like a way to expand back to that full album so I can see the other tracks on it. There's no quick way to get to that album's full track listing right now if it turns out I want to listen to the rest of the album. There's a lot of polish required in the app right now. That's not a bad thing it's just a matter of its current state and maturity. The number one thing that sticks out to me is interface consistency is lacking somewhat. Example: The use of to indicate that a particular line item has more depth is not applied to all parts of the app. I'd like to see the mark added to Artist and Album lists. Any time there is further depth, there should be a at the right side of the line. I'd like to see track numbers displayed when viewing the contents of specific albums. I'd also like to see the total number of tracks listed next to the album name above the tracks. It could be as simple as this: Album Name (#) I'd also like to see the track times listed next to the track names in the track listing for an album. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Do not advertise the fact you are using or going to use the hard buttons. Apple doesn't run through a debugger to test the applications. They may or may not find the volume buttons repurposed, but you fare a better chance of them not seeing it if you don't mention it and if there are other changes in that version. All things considered, Apple is very lax (easy going) with what makes it into the App store. I have helped a few people design their applications and have heard many details about why certain builds of apps are rejected. I've never heard of Apple rejecting anything purely on implementation/style issues so long as no published rules were broken and no IP violated. So for instance, you previously mentioned Apple would have a problem with you scrolling horizontal text in vertical lists, but I don't believe this would be the case. They would not say anything about it more than likely. In my conservative estimation, 90% of the software in the App store is either crap or looks/performs like crap. Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store
approach might be for iPeng to shuffle the tracks and add them to the playlist, but not turn on the player's shuffle mode. Currently no way to do this with SqueezeCenter. BTW, it's the same behavior as with the iPod app, isn't it? The iPod app we've already established is inferior. :) I don't use it. I have my iPod shuffle for development purposes primarily and now for Squeezebox control. I'm not certain I made a good suggestion with this one, but for the sake of completeness, the way to do it would be to add the tracks one at a time, appending each subsequent one. This would be possible with the commands of Slim Center. I think perhaps instead of this I have a better idea. What if you provided an indication of the shuffle status on that shuffe icon you have now on the first line? Leave it grey when shuffle is currently off and show it in blue when it's on (with the appropriate mode indicated)? To take this to the next level and tie it into the previous item I just mentioned, you couuuld have the shuffle icon be a toggling button only, affecting the shuffle mode on the player. Then you'd have to click the Album or All Tracks text to actually perform the addition to the playlist according to the play mode indicated in the title bar. Everyone's a winner with this one. pippen Wrote: Suggestion: Add some quick-jump buttons to the search results that lets you jump to the start of each heading: Artists, Albums, Genres or Tracks. I don't know about everyone else, but when I'm searching I'm usually not doing so for Genres, so it bothers me that the Genres are listed before the Tracks Is this an issue with only a few items? With many items there will be an index doing exactly that, maybe I could reduce the threshold for the minimum number of items to make it show up. The index still requires scrolling of course. I'm fine with not being able to specify what I'm searching for and getting results back for everything, but I think the item categories should be in prioritized order instead of listed alphabetically. The Slim Center web UI default also mized Genres between Albums and Songs and in fact doesn't even iunclude a visible heading for each section which makes it very difficult to visually distinguish the results. But again, this is an opportunity to improve rather than simply mimic. You're most of the way there already. I think the use of the index for this purpose is bad style. The index to me is to be used to navigate a lot of different letter options, but in this case it pops up when there are many items but only allows you to navigate between the different sections. It also shows unexpected entries: A A G T - each of those corresponds to the title of the section, but people would normally expect ABC listed in the index. I would go with buttons to jump to the sections and then for each section, if possible, provide its own index if necessary. That way the index provides meaningful navigation and one can also jump quickly to what they're actually looking for. In all cases I would move GENRE matches to the end, after Albums, Artists and Tracks. BTW, here too we need track times. But not track numbers. :) Next to Play all songs I would add that shuffle icon/control I just discussed above. That then makes this consistent with the other list. BTW, look through your UI for consistency of using the word Song versus Track. In the search results you use Play all songs at the top of each section, but your song section is called Tracks - Play all tracks would be more appropriate/consistent. I haven't looked in detail elsewhere to see if the same type of terminology mixup is present. I would also probably argue that the word Play is both redundant and possibly incorrect to be used because the action will be based on the play mode which might be append or insert. All Tracks would make it consistent with my suggestion above again. ;) -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

With battery-backed alarm settings one can assume that the alarm times are likely not saved to the server. At least not solely saved to the server. Which brings me to... If the server isn't active or the network is not accessible (for whatever reason(s)), does the Boom offer any type of audible alarm fallback? My personal choice would be to allow saving one or more songs into some on-board flash storage as a backup alarm sound when the Boom, for whatever reason, cannot connect to your preferred alarm source (Squeeze Center or Squeeze Network). Re: [slim] Albumartist/Compilation Artist behaviour - is this covered in a bug somewhere?
Read my last comment (16 I think) in that bug. A title from an artist with multiple track artists is not a Various Artists compilation. Unfortunately Slim doesn't distinguish clearly enough between the two in the settings pages and this leads to user confusion. The current Compilation is a Various Artists type. This is the type where you'd have Compilation set to 1. When you have a valid Album Artist the compilation tag should not be set, IMO. There are currently a number of problems with the BAND(TPE2) and ARTIST ALBUM tag treatments. I have documented on issue in the following bug: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7698 I'd really appreciate some additional verification and votes to get this one fixed. It's critical to fix it so that the other one (which is the subject of this thread) can also be addressed. I haven't yet filed bugs for some of the other less critical issues associated with these properties, such as when looking at the album's page through the web interface, albums with TPE2 will display both BAND/ORCHESTRA and ALBUMARTIST entries and then have a heading called Track Artists where it lists all the artists sequentially. Very strange looking (a mess). My testing has been exclusively with MP3 files but there's a lot of overlap to other formats. Some issues may be from interpretation of what one tag for one format translates to in another. Such as BAND(TPE2) - ALBUMARTIST. I also use iTunes to tag right now because there is nothing available for the Mac that is as good as even a mediocre tagger on Windows. When using Slim server together with iTunes, it would be nice to have it respect the original meaning of the tags in iTunes (TPE2 *IS* ALBUM ARTIST). -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45810 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Take a look at this bug: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5108 And look specifically at comment #16 which I just added today. That's how I'd suggest fixing this from a settings perspective. I should have mentioned my testing has been exclusively with MP3 files and that the TPE2/ALBUM ARTIST has been set via iTunes. The fact of the matter is that this USED to work properly using the hard to understand options with 6.x versions of SlimServer. The only thing you needed to tag with a COMPILATION=1 was a real Various Artists album. Everything else should have COMPILATION=0 or unset, including albums by ALBUM ARTISTS with guests. If you had both the original Various Artists option set as well as the group by Album Artist, then you would never have individual artists from either type of album listed in the album or artist browse lists. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45457 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] SOme artists appearing out of order in Artist and Album lists
With version 7.0 and nightlies of 7.01 I'm noticing that a few artists are creeping into sections of both Artist and Album listings they don't belong in. See the screenshots attached. The specific example illustrated shows Blondie, Yazoo and Yes entries within a listing of artists starting with the letter A Further, the position of these artists is different between the Artist List and the Album list (when displaying in the order Artist Year Album) These misplaced artists all also appear on the Armand Van Helden album New York: A Mix Odyssey - tracks on this album are all tagged with TPE2/ALBUM ARTIST of Armand Van Helden with COMPILATION=0 and used to only generate the single album in previous versions of SlimServer. These artists are also ones that I have complete albums for. Other artists from the Armand album for which I do not have complete albums don't seem to be appearing in the list. This definitely has something to do with the changes that were put in to deal with TPE2/ALBUM ARTIST listings and compilations. Re: [slim] Fast-forward/rewind redesign
Is this circle-jerk ever going to end and see Fast-Forward and Rewind implemented for the Squeezebox? It takes all of a second for anyone familiar with other audio equipment to realize that functionality is completely missing. The design goal is pretty straight forward, so I don't understand how so much time can be wasted talking about it when it can better be spent on the engineering to achieve that goal. Single press of FWD or REW buttons - skips to Next or Previous tracks. (We have this now) Long-Press (press and hold) of FWD or REW - Fast-Forwards or Rewinds through current track. (This still needs to be implemented) That's the basic functional premise and user-interaction. The only other design elements are visual presentation and audible presentation, neither of which actually change the basic design and functionality. Once the functionality has been engineered (it should be done in such a way as to not disallow the playback of partial audio), the presentation design can be decided and possibly spread over a number of options. Such as auditory feedback on/off (some CD players for instance let you hear accelerated audio while others don't), temporarily replace display with large-format progress bar so you can clearly see where you are in the song, etc. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41235 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Does anyone have 6.5.5 (any nightly) running properly in Leopard? Before you answer that, do the following... 1. Is SlimServer running? Does the first button say Stop Server or Start Server ? 5. Is the second second button Web Access grey or enabled/active? Every nightly I've tried so far is able to play music and run the Squeezebox, however, the control panel does not work. Setting SS to launch When I log in does bring up the server each time the machine restarts (with auto-login enabled) but the control panel always thinks SS is not running. The first button always says Start Server and the second button is always disabled. Re: [slim] Duet videos
The video makes a world of difference for anyone interested in this product. I don't think Slim/Logitech are doing themselves any favors with the coverage on this web site right now. The images in the gallery are small and don't show anywhere near enough of the functional aspects of the products. Hopefully this will change once this stuff is released. Now with a more consumer-friendly approach to the hardware, the web site needs to follow suit. If you're using a Mac, just run the AppleScript in this blog: http://nslog.com/2006/09/24/itunes_artwork_in_id3 It will automatically perform a process of embedding the artwork right into its respective track as I originally documented here: http://twistedmelon.com/blog/sep2006.html Slimcenter (or any version of Slimserver) will then see the artwork because it will appear where it belongs, inside each track. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42291 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here
BOM (Bill of Materials) on the new controller is likely in the $50 (or sub) neighborhood if I had to make an educated guess based on the costs of past Logitech Harmony products (shhh, inside source). That price fits well enough with an MSRP of $299 if the product were going to be carried through distribution and then retail, with Logitech selling it in volume at about $100. The product is certainly high priced, but this has nothing to do with manufacturing costs at the consumer level. Most consumers have no idea how little it costs to produce most of the crap they buy. The value proposition is based on personal desires/requirements and the existing market for that (or similar) class of products. The controller isn't a universal remote control, so it's unfair to compare to those products even though their BOMs may be similar. What a BOM doesn't include is the engineering effort required to design both the hardware (usually the simplest part) and the software. Yes, it's nice to have an open product, but this is an area where Logitech is saving a bundle by not providing an even more robust feature set right out of the box. Since this is a designed and marketed as proprietary controller, albeit using some pretty standard and wide reaching hardware components, it must be compared against other devices that would fit into similar systems. Namely the SONOS controller. The Slim product line is in a bit of a unique quandary because it can also be controlled by a number of other products in a handheld form factor, such as the Nikia devices and iPod Touch product. Back to price... Even if I knew for a fact the BOM was $50, I'd still want one. And will likely still get one any pay $300 if I have to. With that comes a level of expectation of course. Mainly related to fitness and polish. The drawback to using any other generic device at this time is having to use a plain web skin which is anything but truly interactive. The whole game changes with a custom application running on one of these other devices, but as a consumer, one generally wants a finished product. This is where the Logitech products are being aimed. A lot of potential revenue has ben left on the table over these past years with the Slim lineup. Excellent products, excellent software, but the whole ball of wax just wasn't wrapped in a consumer-friendly package. I've said it before, this is why products like SONOS and Olive have done so well, despite their very high prices. Now how about a discount for loyal forum participants? :) -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41805 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here
If you're looking at Digikey for prices, then you're obviously not really building in volume. 500 unit counts are what you'd buy if you were building stuff by hand at home. As an example, if something retails for $200 through normal distribution/retail channels, it's not a profitable venture to market it with a BOM at $100. Anyway, I said it was an educated guess, not fact. I also qualified why I picked that number. I have no doubts that it is more expensive to produce than every single Harmony remote Logitech currently has available with the exception of the model 1000. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41805 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Don't expect much resolution to this, as these fees are there for the exact purpose of limiting/controlling international trade. There are no duties on goods coming from the US and made in any preferred nation, including US, Mexico, Japan, China and so many others that you're unlikely to ever see a duty charge. Every piece of electronics seems to come from a preferred nation so you'll just pay the federal tax of 6% and the provincial tax, which in Ontario is 8%. Customs fees depend completely on who clears your package through customs. The post office charges $5 for items under about $1000 and approximately $15 for items above. UPS charges some flat base amount and then seems to apply some random factor to it. FedEx charges $15 flat for items at least up to $1000. I had UPS show up at my door trying to deliver a MAGAZINE ($5) and wanting to collect $37 in brokerage. I refused the delivery of course (it wasn't something I ordered anyway). You can arrange for your own customs broker or even go broker it yourself. Overnight and other premium shipping options generally include brokerage cots (such is the case with UPS's higher-priced options and FedEx). If someone is getting stuck with 50% charges it's likely the shipping documentation was improperly filled out and the customs value over-specified. I ship 20 to 100 packages per week to all points around the world. They're typically valued between $25 and $50 Canadian and I have yet to hear of anyone having to pay any import tax or duties into their importing countries, including the UK. Canada post classifies these packages as samples and this coupled with the low (but correct) valuation must be the reason why. UPS lost my SqueezeBox last year. But still tried to collect tax and brokerage on it. When SlimDevices shipped a replacement (which only happened after a UPS-induced lengthy delay) they processed it such that they would cover all costs for shipping and ancillary charges. UPS collected all these funds from Slim and still tried to collect them AGAIN from me. Luckily they delivered the package and tried to collect later, not at delivery time. I told them (and later the collection agency) to take a hike. I generally avoid all shipments via UPS, because it's not so much Canadian taxation policies that will get you in fees, but the carrier. Canadian service companies have a long track record of abusing public ignorance. Re: [slim] Anyone tried running SlimServer on a fit-PC?
What's performance on the web interface using a Fit-PC? I used to run SlimServer on a dual-processor 533MHz Power Mac G4 and thought the performance was abysmal. It improved significantly moving the installation over to a 1.5GHz dual-core Mac mini. Obviously this system could be put to use as a client/workstation rather than a server. It would be great to have something lower priced and more efficient to run SlimServer as long as the performance wasn't terrible. Someone mentioned that the Thecus N5200 NAS was very similar to the other small system mentioned, the Windows Home Server from Ripcaster. They're nothing alike. The Thecus uses only a 600MHz processor where that Home Server has a 1.5GHz chip. The Linutop seems like not much more than a more expensive and feature-light Fit-PC. It has no hard drive. I'd love to see something at this price point with multiple cores and gigabit ethernet. The Thecus looks pretty nice as a NAS which could also be capable of running SlimServer, but all reports mention its configuration software is the pits. I can't say I'm terribly excited about its speed either, though it's head and shoulders above any other consumer NAS such as the terribly slow Infrant products. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39269 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Itunes artwork in slimserver
Just embed the artwork into the the tracks and SlimServer will see them properly. iTunes uses correct album art tags just like any reputable tagger out there. But it doesn't add the artwork automatically into the track's metadata if you only use the Get Album Artwork feature. In that case it stores the album art in its own external library files. Adding the artwork into each track's metadata is much more useful than having jpegs scattered through-out various folders that aren't useful to any other software and don't follow your music around. If using Mac OS you can download a script to automatically re-embed the artwork for any track(s) selected in iTunes: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php?page=1#trackswithoutartwork If you want to do it yourself manually, you just need to select the artwork in the preview window at the bottom left of the iTunes window, COPY it and then PASTE it into one or more tracks using the Get Info window. I've posted numerous times previously about the iTunes library and Slim Server. SS has definitely been having problems picking up the library changes since at least 6.5.2. However I've also found problems when moving to newer iTunes versions without changing anything else. I've been sticking with iTunes 7.1.1 for this reason. With regards to the library filename (iTunes Library.xml), it definitely does not change from run to run of the application and hasn't been changed since at least the first version of iTunes 7. Interesting find on SS trying to access the alternate library filename though. Hopefully I'll have some time to experiment with iTunes updates over the next few weeks. Re: [slim] idea?
Not if he wants the ability to move a specific track to a specific position (that may not be NEXT). Press and hold ADD does an insert. From the web interfaces you can't pick a specific track and move it to a specific position. Tracks in the playlist can be moved up and down and new tracks can either be appended or inserted (after the currently playing tracks and before the track after it, including other inserted items). I'd also like to see a Queued insert or insert-append if you will (or Enqueue as it's called on the Riocar/Empeg). It inserts after the current track but when used again will insert after the previous insert instead of before it. This would allow queueing up music (for immediate playback) at a party without having to add it to the end of a possibly already long playlist. If you want to get really crazy then we'd have a live interface allowing selecting any number of tracks and simply drag and drop them where you want them. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38032 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] So regret to buy SB3
Just sounds like a frustrated user rather than a troll. If you read carefully, he's right. Not about the obvious flame-bait comments, but rather that Slim is an advanced product for advanced end users. It is not a product for a novice to set up nor to use day to day. Not yet anyway. As far as I know there's no support for UPNP servers with the Squeezeboxes. So that means you can't take an off-the-shelf UPNP NAS and have it work with SB3. You need something to either install Slimserver on or that already comes with Slimserver installed. IMO, every consumer-NAS product out there seems to be rather inferior. Slow processors, very slow disk access and some of them no more power-wise than a small general-purpose computer anyway. My solution, though not the cheapest, is still to use a Mac mini with a big disk under it in a matching enclosure. Then you can also have all the niceties provided by iTunes with a very easy and straight-forward installation procedure. It's as easy as installing the current software can get anyway. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37600 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

This sounds like an even more geek-oriented solution than we have now. At least without everything you've mentioned being done under cover without any visibility to the user, beneath a polished interface. Logitech needs to move to a more consumer-friendly approach. Creating some branch that makes for a more convoluted approach to managing your own (DIY) NAS doesn't seem to be in the same direction. Re: [slim] Best way to get artwork?
The BEST way is to get covers manually. It's not the fastest of course. If your music is properly tagged and album names are correct, iTunes is an invaluable source for decent resolution images for a large collection of music. You can easily imbed the artwork into your tracks with a simple script (it's been posted here before by myself and others). I have never recommended the site I'm about to mention, but if you guys find it useful, please consider donating to them. The only reason i have never mentioned it is because I have been selfish and didn't want the resource slowed down. :) http://rateyourmusic.com - awesome site. Amazon is a last resort as they always have the worst images around and often on white backgrounds or other formats unsuitable to use as cover artwork. They also have likely a smaller collection of images than iTunes believe it or not. At least that was my experience with some extensive searching. http://allcdcovers.com has quite a bit of material as well, including cover backs and sometimes liner notes. There are other CD cover sites with images also provided by users - just google for cd covers Most third-party programs unfortunately use Amazon and are therefore useless to me. As mentioned, sometimes Discogs.com has something rare, but best to try the other places first. I manage to complete most of my collection with iTunes and RateYourMusic. Every now and then I just break down and scan the cover myself - this is always my last resort as it's definitely more involved than click-click-drag on a web page. :) But of course produces the best quality if you're willing to spend the time. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37105 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Fast forward/Rewind
Let's keep some things clear so the issue doesn't get lost or misdirected. Remote reception and strength is certainly a concern or source of potential issue from one product to the next and can be affected by a large number of variables. One handset in comparison to another for starters can use different amounts of power to their IR LEDs, a different number of LEDs, better filtered LEDs, etc. The issue being discussed right now isn't about remote problems but a problem that as users we perceive with the current implementation of FFWD and REW. We're not talking about a bug or transient issue, but the fundamental design difference between the SB and any normal CD player (and many/most other DAPs) with regards to forwarding and rewinding. The current implementation while in playback mode (only tested with MP3 files): Short press FFWD = skip to next track Short press REW (1) = skip to start of track if elapsed track time certain offset Short press REW (2) = skip to previous track if elapsed track time certain offset Long press FFWD = activates an automatic 2x fast-forward mode (releasing the button leaves the player in this mode) Long press REW = activates an automatic 2x fast-rewind mode (releasing the button leaves the player in this mode) The 2x auto ffwd/rew sounds choppy and jumpy. You must be viewing the two smaller Now Playing modes to know what's going on. There's no FFWD/REW indicator when viewing in large font (this is also a big problem) Repeating the long-press will switch over to 4x then 8x, 16x and 32x modes. This is working similar to the FFWD and REW buttons on most DVD players. Expected behavior is that of a CD player: Short presses = same as they are now, they're correct. Long press FFWD = playback increases rate to some fixed x and less choppiness should be present in the audio Long press REW = playback increases reverse rate to some fixed x and less choppiness should be present in the audio In both cases, releasing the FFWD/REW buttons should cause normal 1x forward playback to resume. What this implementation loses is variable rate scanning. What it gains is a better connection to the user in terms of function. There is a more direct/tangible/immediate relationship between the pressing of buttons and the output of the player. It is the expected behavior for anyone that has ever used a late model tape player, CD player or many other DAP products. If many people like the DVD-like scanning modes, then this could always be rolled into a configurable option. There are already so many I'm sure another one won't cause a huge issue. All these hundreds of options need to be hidden away for a more consumer interface anyway. And this mode set up as a default will definitely cause much less confusion when someone uses this product for the first time. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36287 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Sonos now available at Best Buy
With a WiFi PDA you are nowhere near the level of integration of a purpose-built controller/interface. Not even close to the level of polish of the Sonos product. The Slimserver skins all offer some level of advanced control and some pretty cool features, but there's no arguing that they all have a certain level of geek appeal that is not suitable or at least will not make a statement to a consumer-level audience. No sense in discussing the positives or benefits the current SB products have. We all know them already, that's why we bought what we did and continue to use them. The SB product is the best, but you have to look at yourself and realize who you are. You (and me of course) are not the typical consumer. No one, including me, has suggested making it a requirement to have a control pad nor to remove the display of any current or future Slim product. I only mentioned that the availability of a finished, primarily screen-based controller, would be an extremely valuable addition to Slim's product portfolio. End users hacking together PDA's with web skins is not the same thing. There isn't a PDA out there that's as cool or functional as the Sonos controller. Re: [slim] Sonos now available at Best Buy
The Sonos has a lot of things wrong with it, including the fact you MUST connect the first player to your network BY WIRE. Only the second and subsequent players can be used wirelessly. I'm sure most people don't notice that little tidbit. I've seen/touched the Sonos controller a number of times, including at CES and Macworld in 2005 when they were launched. but I'm pretty sure I'd seen them at a Macworld prior to that. A lot of people likely imagine the controller to be iPod sized I suppose. It's definitely a two hander or one hand and a table/lap to resting it on. I just want to see options from Slim/Logitech. The polish is what sells their products. I'd be surprised if they weren't outselling Slim products at least 4 to 1. I've evaluated all my options over the past few years. I wasn't an early adopter of the Slim products because they weren't there yet. Last year they reached, along with Slim Server, a level of maturity I felt had reached the trigger point. At the same time, Roku that showed some wow early on was all but dead and Sonos, despite its polish had the unfortunate high price and some restrictions that didn't make me happy. Its server solution was also far from ideal at the time. In terms of low-level IP, Slim has what I consider the lion's share. Logitech likely considered the same strengths when making their acquisition. Now I'm very curious to see what will finally come to the table. Logitech are not typically niche market players. At least not esoteric niche markets. There are so many possibilities and my curiosity has obviously got a hold. Re: [slim] Fluorescent light bulb freaks out Squeezebox
Every fluorescent lamp puts out IR that will be received by all but the most narrow band IR receivers. What happens at the device's end depends on implementation details. The reddish lenses found on IR products filter out specific frequency ranges and in consumer electronics are usually provided so that sunlight and most fluorescents don't cause excessive noise at the receiver module. The modules themselves are also cast with colored plastics to block out certain frequencies. You can get a ton of information (if you care) from the various Siemens, Vishay (etc) data sheets. First suggestion is to buy a few more CF bulbs from different manufacturers and at different outputs. You will probably find one that doesn't cause a problem. In fact I'm almost sure of it. A question for Sean or someone else at Slim... What IR receiver modules were used in the SB2 and SB3? What frequencies should the exterior lenses of the enclosures be filtering for each? I have CF as the sole lighting source in my living room with the SB3 causing no problems at all. I've done a lot of IR work over the past few years and tested countless IR transmitting and receiving products. Numerous (mainstream) products I've tested are completely unusable in my office test area. The SB3 works fine there. Switching to a different remote would have no effect. The noise produced by the light source would still corrupt the signal. Unfortunately, the protocol being used by Slim (JVC) is basically one that repeats a length sequence continuously during a repeat - fairly easy to corrupt because there's a not-insignificant amount of data to decode/match. If instead the product had used the NEC format it would be a lot easier to keep repeats going and able to throw out interference. Of course with a lot of noise being blasted at the same time it would could still be difficult to decode the initial command (but this might have alleviated Seans concern of dipping or mispointing the remote in normal conditions). I'm also surprised I haven't noticed more people complaining about command collision with JVC DVD players. Unfortunately a number of command codes overlap on device 239 (which Slim is using). Really, a unique device number should have been selected to prevent collisions with already established products. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36270 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I thought I recalled Slim using the NEC protocol. But when I did some quick searches as I was writing the post, I turned up only the older JVC codes. All is well then. All is as it should be with IR codes at least. :) 99.99% of all CFL bulbs sold here in Canada seem to be from China, so even though it's easy to find a lot of brands one doesn't necessarily know who's manufacturing them (or more importantly, their integrated ballasts). I still suggest experimenting with different bulbs to get around this problem. Lights with a standard base socket are easy to find for no more than $2 each here in 15, 17, 22w, etc... -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36270 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Sonos now available at Best Buy
I never give only two cents... Here's the perfect example. Apple. Eye Candy, ease of use, and simplicity. Sonos has done well on these fronts as well. I'm not saying both Apple and Sonos are not without their faults of course (I previous mentioned some of Sonos'). The Slim products are great. But you have to be a gear head and pretty serious music aficionado to install and maintain them. Use of a Squeezebox has a low enough learning curve that you can teach most people the basics in a few minutes from the remote. I am the things I just mentioned, so it works for me. But I'm also inherently a designer and artist (and engineer), so I also have a huge appreciation for the finer points and refinements of products well executed from top to bottom (or bottom to top if you work that way around). I would never advocate eye candy *instead* of usability. To me form and function go hand in had. In my books, You really can't have one without the other in product design. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36259 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Sansa Connect - internet radio on the go.
Yes, I like to shoot my mouth off. When I'm right. Rockbox is like modding out a Porsche with a Ford engine and the fugly skin from a Mustang. Skinning is not a replacement for missing controls and widgets under the hood. Look at the common links of all the skins. Read through the features and more importantly, MISSING features of every Rockbox release. Now what's this about toning the language down? Get real. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36198 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Sonos now available at Best Buy
For some reason I thought their product was already available in big-box locations. Normally a dangerous venture due to rubber-band sales (ie. many sales come right back to the store). Sonos might be able to escape this without taking huge hits, but only for one very important reason. Polish. (That's paw-lish, not po-lish like in perogies) Anyone that's been following the DAP and streamer market for the past few years should know it's about the only thing they have above the Squeezebox and a number of other solutions. This counts for a lot in the consumer space and helps to make sure products aren't returned due to things like customer frustration in setting them up. I can't imagine Logitech having purchased Slim Devices if it didn't intend, at some point, to move huge volumes of product to the consumer channel. When are we going to see a redeployed Slim Devices web site? More importantly, a super-polished and no-brainer to set up version 7 software release? Eye candy in the form of a graphical controller practically sells the Sonos solution on its own, so come on Logitech, when's it coming... Here's hoping that Logitech doesn't rely only on its superior distribution channel to move product and that we continue to see innovation and a move into a more graphically pleasant (and highly usable) interfaces. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36259 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Bug when using Replaygain
I can assure you that in my collection which sits at just over 20k tracks right now, there were numerous tracks with positive RG when calculating for a target of 89db. The overwhelming majority required negative RG, but there were still a significant number of positives. This process was for track RG, not Album RG. If I can find some script to help me count, I'll see if I can find what the ratio is of negative to positive gain throughout the collection. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36234 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Alarm Issue
I don't use the Alarm feature myself, but if I understand the way the settings work, I imagine what I'm about to say would be relevant for the Alarm case. In SlimServer, check your AUDIO options for the specific player that does not play a startup (Player Settings - Audio). Then look at the option titled Power on Resume. Do you have something selected there that would not either continue or restart the song? Such as the Remain Stopped option? -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36245 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Odd SB3 behaviour
snarlydwarf;209107 Wrote: With things other than Volume, of course, it leads to a lot more flexibility in plugins. Pressing 5 on my remote rates a track as having 5 stars using the TrackStat plugin... There is no way that sort of complexity could be in the SB hardware itself. Sure it could and it's afalacy to think otherwise. IR is very low budget on resources. You can do pretty much anything you want with only a tiny amount of memory in fact and very little processing power. Anything that is decided not to be handled by the client itsle could then be passed on to the server. Having volume NOT supported at all directly by the player is a valid design decision, but not a very good one. It is in fact the easy way out. As it stands, aside from net latency, volume performance is abysmal, but that has more to do with the assigned curve than the fact it's controlled by the server. Not to mention going down from volume level 2 immediately goes to 0 instead of 1. Need to file that one as a bug if it's not already there. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - Fine Mac OS Software' (http://twistedmelon.com) | 'mira - Personal Control for your Apple Remote' (http://twistedmelon.com)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36143 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
