This seems like as good a thread as any to ask my question: If one of the displays in a Transporter dies, is it feasible to cannibalize the display from an SB3 to replace it? That is, can someone with reasonable soldering skills remove a functioning display and reinstall it in another device without killing it in the process? Bill Burns;696366 Wrote: But is it OK to download a pirated rip of an album if you own the vinyl? I've been pondering this very question myself. What would make sense to me (although probably not the RIAA) is: You should be able to legally download a digital version of the same physical version that you already own, i.e. a rip of the vinyl if you own the vinyl. You have in fact already paid the performer, the songwriter, etc. for their work. In that scenario, the person who did the rip is merely saving you the time of ripping it yourself. However, that download would have to be through a method that is NOT peer-to-peer file sharing, because peer-to-peer means that you'd be re-sharing it with others who do not necessarily have any rights to possess the music. If the version you download is a remaster, i.e. a different master than the one you own, payment for the work of the remastering engineer is the missing piece. As far as I know, remastering engineers do not get paid a royalty per copy, just a flat fee for doing the job. So the loss of revenue for the engineer would be indirect rather than direct, and the record company would be more reluctant to produce and offer remasters in the future. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80369 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] My story of picking betamax...
I originally chose Squeezebox over Sonos for a few reasons: - I wanted the ability to run the server software on a Network Attached Storage box and play my music without requiring my computer to be running. At the time, Sonos didn't have that capability, although it does now. - Sonos did not initially offer players designed to connect to existing stereo systems. They wanted to sell you their amplifiers and speakers instead of leveraging what you already own. (Sonos now offers players designed for connection to external systems, but that wasn't the case early on.) - I like that Squeezebox software/firmware is open source. If/when the manufacturer stops supporting it, a few knowledgeable programmers could keep it running, at least well enough to maintain existing functionality, when new versions of computer operating systems come out. Good luck keeping Sonos software alive if the company ever goes out of business. My Squeezebox system has been up and running for years, and I see no reason to change systems now. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89411 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Where are your CDs?
I've come across another option for removing CDs from their jewel cases. I was looking for something as thin as possible to permanently store the discs and all their associated insert materials as archival backups, with the likelihood that I will never access most of them ever again. (My collection of about 1000 CDs is all digitized for multiple Squeezeboxes and iPods. These days, I might look at a couple of CD inserts a month, and the only CDs I've played in months have been a few brand new ones that I played in my car before I digitized them.) Jewel Sleeves would have been ideal, except for their price of $0.40 apiece, or $400 for 1000 pieces. The JazzLoft.com sleeves are more reasonably priced at $0.15 each, and look like an excellent solution if you still want frequent access to your CDs. But the four layers of 4 mil plastic in the JazzLoft sleeves seemed bulkier than was necessary for my purposes. Then I discovered the super thin (1-2 mil) mylar plastic resealable sleeves used to protect entire CDs in their jewel cases. Turns out that they're ideal for minimalist storage without the jewel case. Everything fits nicely in these mylar sleeves, including one or two discs, the front booklet, and the rear insert with the flaps folded out flat. They can still go on a shelf with the text on the flaps easily visible just by running your fingers across them. They take up even less space than the JazzLoft sleeves. If you're worried (I'm not) about the CD surface touching the mylar or printed materials, you can always put the discs in super cheap paper sleeves before putting them in the mylar. For mini-LP style cardboard CD covers, the whole thing fits inside the mylar, helping preserve the cardboard from degradation. And the best part is that the mylar sleeves are quite inexpensive. At Sleevetown.com for example, 500 of them sell for $18 (less than $0.04 each) plus shipping. Sleevetown even notes This sleeve may also be used to store the entire contents of a typical jewel case including back tray card and booklet for perfectly flat storage. (See Resealable Mylar Single Outer at http://www.sleevetown.com/plastic-cd-sleeves.shtml). For me, it seems like the best solution I've encountered thus far. I've experimented with a few I already have around, and I have a large quantity order on the way. If it all works out, I'll be hauling a couple hundred pounds of jewel case plastic to my local recycling collection facility. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80369 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Then I bought a new 2010 Mazda and installed an optional iPod dock connector interface with full control from the stereo head unit and steering wheel buttons (not just an Aux input jack). All the FLAC files for the Squeezebox are now duped as VBR 240kbps MP3 files for the iPod, and my CDs are soon destined to become dust collectors. They'll probably stay on the shelves until the next time I move homes, at which point, I will switch to an archival storage solution like the sleeves mentioned in this thread. Of course, a few of the box sets (Miles Davis, The Beatles, etc.) will remain intact and on hand for display and reference purposes. By the way, I have to say that the Miles Davis Complete Columbia Album Collection is itself a model of compact storage: 71 discs with full (but small) artwork in a 9-inch long box. The sleeve approach would barely take up less space. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80369 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] FLAC problems / Squeezebox 2
Using both Squeezebox 2 and 3 hardware, I'm running thousands of FLAC files off a Buffalo LinkStation NAS with 7.3.3 Squeezebox server. This server is underpowered for the purpose relative to most users' servers, yet I don't experience the problem you're having. (I always use static IP addresses, although I'd be surprised if that made a difference in the problem you're having.) A few avenues of investigation for you come to mind: 1. The larger file size of FLAC vs. WMA might be bogging down your network. Sounds like you've already looked into that, but could it be a router or network switch issue? Does the problem happen at a specific time in a track, such as always in the first few seconds, or can it happen at any point in a track? 2. Something inside the FLAC files could be the culprit. Do you have unusually large album artwork embedded in your FLACs? (All my FLACs have 300x300 or 400x400 album art embedded.) Anything else embedded in the FLAC tags that might gag the server? 3. Perhaps your Squeezebox server is set to transcode FLAC to some other file format, choking the server? I've used it without a preamp, and it is annoying to have to find and press the volume button. I raised this issue first time I heard about the Transporter, back when it was announced in July 2006. (See my post #58 in this old thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25773page=6.) As I explained in that thread, I effectively wanted to use a Transporter as a digital preamp, and I make minor volume adjustments far more often than I choose an album to play. I would have preferred the Transporter to actually have a separate volume knob altogether, but if there was only going to be one knob, its default had to be as a volume control. I would have preordered a Transporter before it was even released if it had worked that way. Back then people on the forum just assumed that someone would write a plugin to set the default to volume control, but over the course of many years and many products from many manufacturers, I've seen numerous seemingly simple features never get implemented, so I wasn't going to plunk down my two grand until it actually worked the way I wanted it to. More than three years later, a volume control default for the Transporter knob still doesn't exist as far as I know. I have since taken my system in a different direction, so I wouldn't be buying a Transporter today even if a volume default were to be implemented. Thus, Slim Devices lost the opportunity to sell me a Transporter because of a minor design choice that easily could have been rectified. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67747 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] A rant towards a rescue. Needed. NOW. ... From here to where?
As a former product manager for consumer electronics devices myself, I generally agree with Moonbeam's assessment, and I commend him for having the gumption to post it, knowing he'd catch some flak. In my view, a key problem with open source software is that the techies develop it for their own desires, not those of Joe and Jane Sixpack who don't give a rats a** about SQLite vs. MySQL. The masses just want something that works well (even if it has a few bugs), without having to tinker under the hood. Think iPod or TiVo. When both of those products were first introduced, they already had very well thought out (if imperfect) user experiences which kept the technical details hidden from view. You didn't have to be a tech geek to appreciate them, but tech geeks could appreciate them anyway, despite their frustrations at not having full access to the inner workings. I hate to say this, and I'm sure I'll catch flak for it, but Logitech might be better off taking development entirely in house. I especially hate to say it, because the open source platform is one of the things that attracted me to buy Squeezeboxes in the first place. But Joe and Jane Sixpack don't frequent this forum, and that leads to skewed input into the open source development process unless your target market is open source developers. Sure, I can set up a Squeezebox system that's so easy to use that my girlfriend can handle it and even like it, but no way in heck could she set it up herself. Does anybody here believe that open source development of Squeezecenter will ever lead to a product that is easy enough to set up that his or her mother could do it? -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66745 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I noticed the other day that many of the pixels on the display of my Squeezebox 2 are not equally bright. My AV receiver has a function that lights up all the pixels on its internal display for a few hours, which restores the pixels to equal intensity. The AV receiver documentation refers to this function as pixel refresh. Is there such a function for the Squeezebox? Re: [slim] Pixel refresh screensaver?
In the case of a CRT, true screensavers light up the screen in pseudo-random patterns, which smooth out transitions to areas that have high burn-in. For VFDs, what you're saying might be true near the end of pixel life, but it doesn't seem to work that way during the bulk of the lifespan. On my AV receiver, for example, which uses a VFD similar to what's in the Squeezebox, it's quite easy to see the intensity even out after all the pixels are lit for a few hours. There's no way that brighter pixels have worn themselves down in that time to the level of other pixels that might have been used hundreds or thousands of hours more. Perhaps it's not the phosphorous elements, but the driver circuitry, that's affected. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63882 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Pixel refresh screensaver?
On the AV receiver's VFD, the process seems to even out about 80 percent of the difference. After the whole screen is lit up for a couple of hours, you can still make out which pixels get more use but that distinction becomes subtle. When you go back to normal display usage, it's barely noticeable. For example, if you are selling software, the engineering costs stay relatively the same regardless of whether you sell a thousand copies or a million. [slim] SB3 behaving like those trick candles that won't blow out
I've seen several instances of a particular strange behavior, and I'm trying to determine where the problem lays. On some occasions, when I power off an SB3, less than a minute later, it turns itself back on and continues playing. Once the SB3 is in this state, if I hit the power off again on the remote, the same thing happens: it's back to life in under a minute. The only way I have figured out to get it to stay off in this situation is to pause the music before powering off. Then everything behaves normally. A few pertinent facts and observations: - I'm running Squeezecenter 7.0.1 on a Buffalo Linkstation Pro (with FreeLink Linux). This may or may not be related to the problem. One of the reasons I'm posting this in the General Discussion forum is to see if anyone else has experienced the same thing with non-Linux installations. I took a quick look in the bug database, and I didn't see anything that looked like this problem, but then again, it wasn't clear to me what search terms I should have been using. - I have three SB3s, and I have seen this behavior on two of them, so it's not the specific SB3 unit. (My third SB3 doesn't get used as much as the other two, so perhaps I just haven't used it enough lately to encounter the problem.) - The times this problem has occurred have all been when playing Random Mix. However, I play Random Mix much of the time, and most of those times this problem does not occur. I'm not convinced Random Mix necessarily has anything to do with it, but it might. - I would estimate the problem happens about one out of five times I turn off an SB3, but it's not consistent. I can't make it happen just by turning an SB3 on and off five or even ten times in a row. - A significant symptom that the SB3 will turn itself back on is when I power it off, its screen goes completely blank rather than showing the date and time screensaver that's normally displayed when the device is off (actually a standby state). If I see a blank screen, I know it's coming back to life on its own. - One of the times the problem occurred, I had the Squeezecenter window open in my browser, and I could see that even though I had turned off the SB3, Squeezecenter showed that the music was still playing. When the SB3 restarted itself about 30 seconds later, it was playing at the point where Squeezecenter had already advanced. In other words, Squeezecenter never paused or stopped the music during the period when the SB3 was off. On that occasion, I checked the Squeezecenter log immediately afterward, and there did not appear to be any entries or errors related to this happening. Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here
In the Logitech booth at CES, the Duet setup I saw was connected to a home theater system, yet the Controller couldn't even switch the A/V receiver to the correct input. (The Controller cannot control devices other than Receiver/Squeezebox/Transporter, despite having an IR output.) It seems odd that Logitech would release a product (the Receiver) which cannot be controlled by its Harmony remotes (because the Receiver has no IR sensor and no video output), and release a $299 remote (the Controller) that can only control one class of product. In a home theater system with a Receiver, the user would still need at least two remote controls.
