Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezePlay for Mac OSX
Well don't I feel silly now! It turns out I just needed to restart Squeezeplay after configuring eqMac for the 'MacBook Pro Speakers'. No jiggery pokery with plist files needed at all. So eqMac is a keeper - it's only the free version, but it does exactly what I wanted it to. I've configured it to launch at login, so it's always there. And boy does it now sound good. Mightily impressed with this new laptop. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96328 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezePlay for Mac OSX
Well eqMac evidently creates an output device called "MacBook Pro Speakers (eqMac)". So as a quick test I fired up Sqeezelite with: Code: Squeezelite -o "MacBook Pro Speakers (eqMac)" The equaliser works properly. So I feel confident that Squeezeplay can be configured the same way. Just need to work my way through the steps described in the first post. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96328 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

No - that doesn't install it. You need to drag it to the Applications folder. You'll find that some .dmg files include a shortcut to the applications folder, which makes this slightly easier. But just open another finder window, or go to View -> Show Toolbar, which will give you a side panel with various options. You should find 'Applications' in the list of Favourites chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96328 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezePlay for Mac OSX
I've just installed Squeezeplay on a new M1 Mac - did the xattr fix and I'm up and running. With one of the QVGA skins it's a great compact little player and/or controller to leave in a corner of the desktop. My Mac is a 16" Macbook, and it has surprisingly good built-in speakers, so I'll likely use Squeezeplay as my desktop player while working. As with all my audio sources, I like to tune the sound to my preference, so I've found some software equalisers (eqMac, Airfoil) that can tune the output of the built-in 'MacBook Pro Speakers'. They work nicely with, say, the macOS Spotify app, but they don't have any effect on the output from Squeezeplay. I expect that's because Squeezeplay uses a different output method to other apps. Is there perhaps a way to route Squeezeplay's output so that these software equalisers will work? chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96328 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I've just sat down to put some music on, and I noticed that the volume setting for all my players are much lower than they were when I switched them off - some at zero. Re: [slim] Spontaneous volume reduction
I'd appreciate the opinion of anyone who has experience with log files. I just had the spontaneous volume reduction happen again, this time while streaming Greatest Hits Radio on a Group Player that combines two Booms, a DAC32 and a pCP. I've trimmed the attached log file down to the 10 minutes or so from when the Group Player was turned on before the volume changed, plus a short period afterwards. I'm no expert, so does this look to anyone else as though the mixer volume change request was initiated by iPeng at [21-03-29 18:24:00.4061]? That would be odd if so, because my phone was lying untouched on the table. I don't recall exactly when was the last time I had iPeng in the foreground, but it was definitely before I turned the Group Player on at around 18:13:51. +---+ |Filename: volume change server.log.zip | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=33996| +---+ chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114230 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I just had it happen again - my kitchen Boom was (soft) powered off, and when I turned it on it came on with zero volume. The volume of the other players wasn't affected though - so it seems like a different variant of the problem. As far as I can tell from the server log, the kitchen Boom simply came on with [mixer volume] = [0]. My two pCPs both have the latest Squeezelite which I believe was released to fix an issue with inverted audio and the new balance control. I'm using neither of those options, and I believe my volume problem pre-dates that new version of Squeezelite. For completeness, neither of the Pis is actually audible, since I've temporarily switched inputs on my main amp to use the DAC32, and the other one plays through the TV only if I'm on the right channel. But both instances of Squeezelite are 'on' and synced. Wracking my brain for other 'new' things that might be responsible. I'm loathe to fling any more wild accusations around, as I may have done with the DAC32 (given that @the_arm doesn't have one)! I've had an Echo dot running philchillbill's Alexa skills for a while now, but the problem started quite a long time after I first started using that. [slim] Spontaneous volume reduction
For a week or two now I've been experiencing my synced players spontaneously going quiet without me apparently doing anything. I can't put my finger on what's causing it. I have a niggling feeling it's something to do with the DAC32, because it's part of the sync group that's experiencing the volume reductions, and whenever it happens I see that the DAC32's volume has reduced to zero, while other players that may have been louder to start with still have a non-zero volume. It could also be related to the fact that I started listening to Greatest Hits radio more frequently. Or it could have been an LMS update (currently on Logitech Media Server Version: 8.2.0 - 1614413430). I've checked the obvious things that I can think of - I'm not using any volume adjustment, and the synced players don't have synced volume. So I'll obviously have to do some trouble-shooting, but I wondered whether anyone else was experiencing similar. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114230 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'd be really pleased to see a balance control in LMS. It makes as much sense to me to have control over the source as it does to have control in the amplifier. Squeezebox players don't always go through a traditional full featured hifi amp. I can imagine using this with a stereo pair of Booms, to adjust the apparent separation, or in my camper van, where speaker geometry is fixed and there are no hardware adjustments. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114010 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] SB and Low Volume on Klipsch Promedia Setup
In the past I've made the mistake of assuming that more power equals more gain. I'm no expert, but my understanding is that although more power would be needed to drive an amplifier that has more gain, for an amplifier that has a certain gain, more power simply allows for less distortion. Too little power for an amplifier with a given gain will lead to distortion. So if you're hearing clean, undistorted sound but at a low volume, I doubt that would be because of the power supply. It points more to the input signal being too low (which is what the output caps thread is about). I'm happy to be corrected by those with more knowledge. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113854 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

This is interesting. I don't have a faulty SB3, nor a need for yet another Squeezebox, but I'm tempted to sign up anyway! A couple of thoughts: 1) Are you planning to add a coaxial digital output to SqueezeAMP, or will that particular hole in the back casing be left vacant? 2) Would it be possible to have an option, either through a jumper or a switch on the PCB or through a software setting, to choose between speaker output and line-level output for the cinch connectors? Are line-level signals available somewhere on the SqueezeAMP PCB already? chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113818 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hmm - I'm going to give up on die.net for now. I figured out how to use mysqueezebox.com's image proxy (I think), and managed to fetch one of the other images via the proxy. Code: wget "http://www.mysqueezebox.com/public/imageproxy?u=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.die.net%2Fearth%2Fmercator%2F1128.jpg; -O test.bmp Connecting to www.mysqueezebox.com (34.244.111.131:80) saving to 'test.bmp' test.bmp 100% |*| 22 0:00:00 ETA 'test.bmp' saved Up till now I've been using Chrome, but I tried the plain image URL (https://static.die.net/earth/rectangular/1280.jpg) in Safari, and the first time I tried it I briefly saw a page that indicated that my browser was being vetted by Cloudfare, then the image loaded. Subsequent requests simply go straight to the image. So it does appear that they'd rather you viewed their images in a browser, instead of fetching them with wget. Correction: The directory is only re-read whenever the screensaver kicks in. So completely new images don't show up until that happens. But -updated- images, i.e. a new image with the same name as an existing image, will be re-loaded while the screensaver cycles through it's directory list. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113732 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Jivelite geo/weather maps screensaver
I had occasionally thought about trying to write a dedicated screensaver to show various real-time geo/weather maps, maybe a bit like a 'Geochron' (https://geochron.co.uk/) display. But then I saw how '@sodface was using the built-in Image Viewer screensaver' (https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?111488-Jivelite-on-Alpine-Linux=1001020=1#post1001020), and realised I didn't need to reinvent the wheel. So since this is now rather off-topic for @sodface's Alpine Linux thread, I thought I'd post an example here, just as a heads-up in case, like me, you hadn't realised that the image viewer can be used this way. In my case, I am using a script on a pCP setup to fetch a number of images from various internet sites and store them in a local folder called 'home/tc/ScreenSaverImages'. I then call this script every 15 minutes using a cron job. I have configured the Image Viewer screensaver to use local storage, and to look in that folder. Fortunately, which is key to this, the Image Viewer screensaver seems to re-read the directory and re-load each image file whenever it updates, so I can add images to that folder, or update existing images, and the screensaver always cycles through the current images. My script also pushes this folder to a couple of Jogglers which are set up to use the Image Viewer screensaver. I started off trying to use some of the nice images provided by Fourmilab, but the server eventually locks me out even if I only fetch one image every 15 minutes, and only during the hours when I'm likely to want to see the images - it seems -very- determined to stop the server being overwhelmed - so I've stopped using that source. I now collect a variety of images from other sources, and am on the lookout for other sources, so please go ahead and post anything you think might be interesting. My current 'GetScreenSaverImages.sh' script is as follows: Code: #UK Rain wget "https://api.sat24.com/mostrecent/GB/rain; -O /home/tc/ScreenSaverImages/UKRain.bmp #UK Snow wget "https://api.sat24.com/mostrecent/GB/snow; -O /home/tc/ScreenSaverImages/UKSnow.bmp # UK Sun & Clouds wget "https://api.sat24.com/mostrecent/GB/visual5hdcomplete; -O /home/tc/ScreenSaverImages/UKSunClouds.bmp # UK Infrared wget "https://api.sat24.com/mostrecent/GB/infrapolair; -O /home/tc/ScreenSaverImages/UKInfraRed.bmp #https://api.sat24.com/crop?type=visual5hdcomplete=55.9533=-3.1883=800=800=0.30=eu #Moon visibility wget "https://www.timeanddate.com/scripts/sunmap.php?obj=moon; -O /home/tc/ScreenSaverImages/moonlight.bmp #Day and Night wget "https://www.timeanddate.com/scripts/sunmap.php?earth=1; -O /home/tc/ScreenSaverImages/DayNight.bmp #Images available from Fourmilab. Re: [slim] Writing Playlists to thumb drives for vehicle use
Some time ago I had a similar requirement. My music library consists of mostly whole album FLACs with separate CUE sheets, but with a number of lossy tracks in different formats as well. I wanted a way to convert every single track in a playlist into MP3 format for use in my car, so I wrote a script (see below) that runs on my pCP server. It's very much tuned to my particular library, so the cases it handles are very specific: Lossless input (album FLAC or track FLAC) will always be encoded to MP3 (using sox and lame) MP3 input will always be copied without transcoding Other lossy input (OGG, M4A) will be copied without transcoding, unless the -t option is used, in which case they will be transcoded to MP3 (using sox or faad, and lame). Title, Artist and Album tags are written to the output files, together with a Comment tag that documents the origin of the file. I used my script on a few playlists and it's handled everything I've given it, but it probably would not take much to break it. It might be a useful starting point if you want to adapt something to your own library though. It looks like my post becomes too long if I try to include the script code here, but I'll be happy to post it separately if you think it might be useful. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=112484 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I have quite a collection of Booms and I expect to take on one or other of these jobs in the near future. As a point of interest though, can you explain a detail that I don't quite understand? You have explained that the variable voltage on the right side is intended as a way to control the display brightness, but you also say that it remains possible to vary the brightness even after your diode fix, which I understand creates a fixed voltage drop. Do you know how the brightness remains variable even with this constant voltage drop? chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107535 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Logitech's decision to this day > continues to make no sense :-P I agree with both of these points. The Boom is an awesome little player, with great sound out of the box and scope to tune it to your own taste. And it goes surprisingly loud without distorting. A very clear-sighted design which, as you say, is not matched by any of the current portable speakers. At the time of the Boom's release, everything looked very promising. In contrast I remember being completely underwhelmed by the sound quality from the Radio - a bit muddy out of the box, and no scope to tune the sound. Lovely form factor, but the SQ was quite a surprise after the Boom. An updated Boom with the Jive interface would have been perfect IMO. Since that's not going to happen, I'm also making a bit of a collection of Booms, and have a small stock of foam surrounds to repair the bass drivers as and when necessary, and have experimented quite successfully with eliminating the sticky surfaces by spray painting with matt lacquer rubber paint. I have a friend with a Sonos system, and all I'll say is that the higher cost doesn't guarantee a smoother experience or better sound quality! chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Respecting the heritage!
My newly acquired SliMP3 arrived today - what a thing of beauty! [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/SliMP3_640.jpg] I've wanted one of these for a while, so jumped in when this one came up on eBay. It wasn't an instant 'plug and play' addition. It goes to show how things have moved on in what seems like such a short time. - No wireless, so I had to find an ethernet cable and a spare socket in a nearby switch - This thing only plays MP3s, so I had to install Lame on my pCP server (one click!) - The only outputs are single ended RCA/cinch. My amp has been in use for almost a year, and in that time I've never used the analogue inputs - not even tested them till tonight. And they're balanced, so I needed to dig out my adapter cables. Apart from that - plain sailing! Objectively it's not a patch on a pCP RPi with a Joggler screen running Jivelite, but I love it. It's where it all started! chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Secondhand market
Of course, I should say that in no way do I think that it's the beginning of the end for the Squeezebox ecosystem. Quite the opposite - the server software, the plugins, the supported hardware and the new devices are such that the ecosystem has never been in better shape. I just get the impression that the original hardware's days are numbered. If only Logitech could add LMS support to a few more quality devices (in addition to the other more prosaic connectivity options). chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=07 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Secondhand market
Like many on here I guess, I regularly trawl eBay for used Squeezebox hardware. I'm pretty sure that the number of items for sale has increased quite significantly in recent months. Is it just me? Booms in good condition are still fetching good money, but sad-to-say, most other devices seem to be losing value quite quickly. It makes the BNIB Touch that I bought for emergencies when they went out of production seem like an unwise purchase (especially since I've retired my main Touch in favour of a Raspberry Pi and a Joggler screen)! I've even managed to bag a SLIMP3 today for silly money - I've wanted one of those for a long time, and there seemed to be little competition for this particular one. So is this a golden period for Squeezebox fans looking to stock up, or the beginning of the end for the traditional hardware? I've extended one of the USB3 ports to the back panel, as well as the ethernet and HDMI ports. Currently I have an SSD connected to that rear panel USB3 extension, but I'm not fixed on keeping it that way. I do also have a 3B+ that runs Jivelite on my TV, as well as handling nightly backups, and I may move the SSD to that machine and share it via Samba. I've also considered running LMS on another device, and swapping out the 4B for a Zero to run just Squeezelite, but I do like the idea of having everything in one box. My target for the amp was always for it to be a fully integrated device. Re: [slim] Pitastic
Yes, it's a hifi amp - a power amp and my primary music source in one. In a silent room I can hear the fan from about a foot away - no further. If there's music playing at any volume, the fan is inaudible. It's a 5V fan, which I'm running on 3.3V. On 5V it is more audible (and more effective). I think with it set at 68 degrees it's there for emergencies only - a little peace of mind. To be fair, my scenario is quite a harsh test, and even here the fan isn't really needed. I think the main thing it shows is that the 4B is perfectly fine running LMS and Squeezelite with nothing more than a little passive cooling, i.e. a heatsink and some free air. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110690 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Pitastic
I updated my fan control script to keep a log of the amount of time that the fan is 'on', and then went a bit nerdy (nerdier?), and worked out the duty cycle for several different set temperatures. So on a hot summer's day, inside a hot amplifier, my RPi4 4GB running LMS and Squeezelite sits naturally at about 67 to 68 degrees. My little fan running off 3.3V can pull it down to about 52 degrees [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/Fan%20Duty_480.jpg] So on the basis that 68 degrees is still some way short of the 80 degrees that causes throttling, and is therefore considered safe (?) by the manufacturers, that's where I've set my fan control. This means that it's not being triggered under normal conditions, but if the load on the Pi increases then it kicks in. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110690 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Pitastic
A quick observation about heatsinks and their connection to the CPU. When I first fitted my 40mm x 40mm heatsink I used some ''thermally conductive tape' (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B075R9RGXF)'. It seemed to work, but I was suspicious because it seems to be about 1mm thick, and internally it seems to have a foam construction. I can't see how that can be good for thermal transmission. So I reaffixed the heatsink using a small blob of 'silicone heatsink compound' (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00YCMR04Q). I wasn't sure it would work in my application, as my RPi is mounted on edge and the heatsink is fairly heavy, and I don't think the compound 'sets'. But it seems to be holding perfectly, and the better thermal contact has had a noticeable effect. With my fan turned on at 12:47, the temperature dropped by about 10 degrees in 4 minutes - that's about twice the drop I recorded when the heatsink was fixed with thermal tape. The non-fan temperature of 61 degrees is also about 3-4 degrees lower than the same test with thermal tape. [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/40mm%20with%20compound_480.jpg] This is the earlier test with the heatsink held on with thermal tape. Identical test conditions - if anything, the ambient temperature is warmer today. [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/Pi4%20with%20fan_480.jpg] Perhaps the thermal conductive tape should be renamed 'thermal insulating tape'. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110690 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Not sure where you'd draw the line between 'cheap' and 'not cheap', but the 'Audio Pro C3' (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Pro-Addon-C3-Multi-Room/dp/B07CX4GQ39) is a nice unit. It has a really nice sound, with an app that lets you adjust bass and treble. I leave mine plugged in as a bedroom player most of the time, which means the battery is always fully charged when I need to use it outside, and it's always available as Squeezebox player. Works well with Philippe's plugin, with no need to adjust for any time lag. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110899 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Pitastic
I was interested to see how to control a simple fan in software. To date my RPi4 seems to run comfortably cooler than the throttling temperature, but having developed a way to mount a fan in my 'stack' inside my amplifier, I was keen to see if I could leave it permanently connected but only have it running when needed. My simple 2-wire fan draws about 45mA on 3.3V, which is too much to drive directly from a GPIO pin. So I wired up a little transistor to switch the GND side of the fan according to the state of a GPIO pin. I made it so that it simply plugs into the existing fan wiring. [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/Transistor%20wiring_480.jpg] [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/Transistor%20fan%20control_480.jpg] Then I made a script to turn the fan on and off according to temperature. I set the 'off' temperature one degree below the 'on' temperature to reduce the frequency that it turns on and off. Here's the result from an idling pCP (no LMS, no Squeezelite) in the open air. When running at 3.3V the fan takes about 5 minutes to pull the temperature down from a resting 56 degrees to the 40 degrees that I set. It struggles to get much below that. Running on 5V it cools faster and lower, but it becomes audible. Re: [slim] praise
I completely agree about LMS. It's already extremely versatile, and its capabilities continue to grow. Hopefully it has enough critical mass to continue for a long time to come. I wonder if Logitech simply saw the writing on the wall regarding the development of software players, and realised that it would be hard to make money from Squeezebox hardware when in competition with, say, a Raspberry Pi feeding a DAC. 'SqueezeESP/SqueezeAMP' (https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?109838-SqueezeEsp-The-cheaper-squeezebox-in-the-world=947589=1#post947589) is yet further proof. Re: [slim] Player synchronisation problems with new mesh wifi
That makes sense. So Shairtunes wasn't the culprit but the victim, and I drew the wrong conclusion from the error messages. Whatever's causing this occasional 37s dropout when players are synced and playing is quite a rare phenomenon in my case. I've had my RPi powered down and back up numerous times today, and haven't had one instance of the dropout problem. But there do seem to be one or two other users with the same issue, dating back to 2014. You can apparently show the current CPU frequency with: Code: sudo cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_cur_freq On my RPi4, running pCP (LMS & Squeezelite) I've never seen it show anything but the currently set maximum. So apparently there's a difference, certainly in terms of heat generation, between an idling CPU @1500MHz and one under load at the same frequency. Or maybe that command isn't doing what I think it is - that might explain why I never saw it report a different frequency when I briefly played with the governor settings in the tweaks menu. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110690 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Oddly, I don't think I ever actually did that manually. I did reboot pCP, but maybe that's not enough - maybe LMS needs to be restarted after everything's up and running. The amp got up to operating temperature, and I connected the fan at 14:16. It seems to drop the temperature by ~5 degrees. I'm guessing it's no greater because it's mostly just moving warm air around inside the amplifier, as kidstypike suggested. The fan's not really big enough, nor suitably ducted, to draw in fresh air. Re: [slim] Pitastic
I tried to find an underclocking speed that would make my 4B 4GB perform similarly to my 3B+. It's very difficult to find a test that eliminates all the variables. I settled on a single oggenc job on a 90-minute flac file, as I figured that involved a bit of disk read and write, and a lot of CPU activity. I used the same hard disk on both machines, and I used a USB2 socket on the 4B so as to match the 3B+. On the 3B+ the task took 11m 07s. On the 4B at the standard 1500MHz it took 4m 13s - quite an improvement. I had to underclock the 4B to 600MHz to get that time up to 10m 12s - still 9% faster than the 3B+. The temperature conditions were far from equal, so the only thing I can tell is that underclocking the 4B does lower the temperature, but only by a couple of degrees. The 3B+, sealed inside the official case without a heatsink or fan, got up to 63 degrees during this task. The 4B, mounted inside my amplifier enclosure (powered down, so at room temperature) with a 40mm heatsink and no fan, got up to 57 degrees at 1500MHz, and 55 degrees at 600MHz. So the surprising things for me were: 1) the 4B is very much faster than the 3B+ at this task with their default clock speeds 2) the temperature savings by underclocking the 4B are minimal So I shall be running my 4B at the default 1500MHz, and based on these and earlier tests I'm happy that the conditions inside my amplifier are fairly kind to the 4B. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110690 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

chill wrote: > Underclocking seems to make remarkably little difference in my setup - > perhaps 3 degrees under load. Actually, LMS isn't really much of a load. So I ran some consecutive oggenc jobs while LMS was rescanning. Whereas this would have taken the temperature into the low 70s, it now peaks at about 67 degrees. So maybe 5ish degrees improvement. Playback to 5 synced players still seems perfect at 600MHz. In my case there's no real benefit in underclocking - the temperature savings are minimal and I wasn't struggling with heat at the default clock speed. But maybe there'd be bigger gains for Pis in a tighter space, or with a smaller heatsink. Worth a try if you're up for some testing. To underclock, edit the config.txt file on the boot partition, and uncomment the #arm_freq= line, e.g: Code: arm_freq=600 chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110690 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Pitastic
Underclocking seems to make remarkably little difference in my setup - perhaps 3 degrees under load. I don't think my setup is completely representative though, because my Pi lives inside my amplifier, where the ambient temperature is higher than normal. So I set it the task of a clear and rescan on my library - when it's doing that I think the temperature caused by the load on the CPU is less affected by the ambient temperature. But I do suspect the results will be slightly different in other people's setups. At the default 1500MHz [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/Rescan%20at%201500MHz_480.jpg] Underclocked to 1000MHz [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/Rescan%20at%201000MHz_480.jpg] Underclocked to 600MHZ [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/Rescan%20at%20600MHz_480.jpg] The scan times did take longer: 1500MHz: 6:04 1000MHz: 7:10 600MHz : 9:50 The interface still seems very responsive even at 600MHz. My memory isn't good enough to compare properly with how it was with my 3B+ though. And I haven't tried it with music playback yet. I think I'll leave it at 600MHz for a while to see how well it performs. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110690 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Pitastic
There seems to be a fair amount of resistance to using the Pi4 for LMS, based on heat issues, and reports seem to suggest that in an enclosed case with no airflow it can run very hot. I should stress that in my application, with a 40mm heatsink and a bit of convection airflow, running LMS and Sqeezelite and serving various players doesn't cause any heat problems at all. So I was wondering whether anyone has tried underclocking the Pi4 to the point where the temperature is similar to a 3B+. Would the performance running LMS then end up similar to a 3B+ (which of course is more than adequate), or would the new processor, extra ram, USB3 and gigabit ethernet all contribute to an improvement over the 3B+? chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110690 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Oh well. I'm pretty sure I read another thread where people were having similar dropouts with synced players, and I think it was from some time ago so unlikely to be on a Pi4. I'll see if I can dig out that thread. The temperatures on my Pi4 now seem to be fully under control, and I do like the (subtle) speed bump. I should also add that Airplay and Bluetooth sync seem much better since I moved to pCP6 beta and RPi4. It could have been something specific about my previous pCP4/RPi3B+ setup, but I found that I had to regularly tweak the sync delay settings, especially for Bluetooth. That's no longer the case with my Pi4. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110765 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Just a thought - are you running the 'ShairTunes2 (fork)'? My mesh wifi has been running flawlessly for the last couple of weeks, but last night I had a recurrence of the 37-second dropouts. Rebooting pCP didn't fix it, nor breaking the synchronisation then re-synching, nor restarting every wifi AP. I hadn't changed anything in the wifi setup, but I'd been changing a few things in LMS, and on one occasion pCP booted without being able to start LMS or Squeezelite because I'd removed a mounted disk. I now suspect that the Shairport-helper *might* be the cause of the 37 second dropouts. I noticed that the dropouts coincided with shairport-related messages in the log file (which I stupidly didn't keep), so I disabled Shairport and the dropouts went away. Then I reloaded Shairport, and still no dropouts. If it ever happens again I will try the 'Re-Publish' or 'Wipe' options for the helper. Is it possible that the Shairport helper information can get corrupted under certain circumstances, and that this corrupted information somehow survives a reboot? This could explain why the only way I could recover previously was to re-image my SD card. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110765 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

That's the same symptoms I had. And the dropout interval seems common too. kidstypike wrote: > Cured by simply restarting LMS on the Pi4 from the piCorePlayer LMS > page. Didn't work for me - no amount of restarts/reboots made any difference. Bizarrely, changing the SSID of my new wifi fixed it for me. I never did look into the logs, so any further clues as to the cause are now long gone. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110765 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Is yours a mesh wifi system? Although I haven't had a recurrence of my dropout problem, I have had one or two issues getting devices to connect to my mesh wifi for the first time. My Jogglers in particular caused me some heartache - I couldn't even get them to connect after reloading the disk image. In each case, however, the connection problems have gone away after rebooting the wifi APs. Worth a try. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110765 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The fit was much more convenient that I expected - it slid in between the two ribbon cable sockets, touching both but without forcing them in any way. I think you're right - any serious continuous load will require active cooling if the aim is to avoid throttling. Fortunately for this discussion, LMS+Squeezelite don't seem to represent a serious continuous load. And I suspect that even if throttling does kick in, Squeezelite would be unaffected and LMS only marginally, if at all. For a bit of fun I logged the CPU temperature on the 4B in my amplifier for a 24 hour period: [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/RPi%20Board/pcp_cpu_temp_18JUL_640.jpg] I can see: - the gradual cooling of the amplifier after it was shut down at the end of the previous day. - a brief spike at 2am where the cron script runs to take a backup of the SD card. - a slight rise in temperature just after 10am. I think this could be when the sun hits the amplifier for a short period, and then as the sun moves on the amplifier cools down again. - a very clear warm up just before 6pm, when the amplifier was powered up. During the evening the amplifier variously played Squeezebox music and TV sound, and there's no clear difference in temperature - it just sits at around 65 degrees, which must be dominated by the ambient temperature inside the amplifier. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110690 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'm still getting to grips with all the settings, but even without that option enabled my phone seems to switch over to the nearest AP just as quickly. So I've disabled that option again, for maximum compatibility with older wifi kit, such as Booms. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110765 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

You can get FileZilla for Windows. You could use this instead of WinSCP. - A terminal prompt to open an SSH session. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110765 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
