If you are a SqueezeBox user and are complaining that there is no iPad version of iPeng, here is the one for you. I've been using this since the previous version. It wasn't bad in terms of ease of use, although the appearance wasn't very nice at all. This new version is a success because they added a more detailed appearance whilst keeping the basic layout as before. An image of your SqueezeBox is shown on the selector of the player. This was also a function iPeng of 2 generations before the current one, but probably because of a problem with the patent or something it's now more of a stylised image. This has led to a better review for SqueezePad, but it's a worry for the future. Even allowing for such an unknown for the future, I believe this one is worth the high price. Only if you are a SqueezeBox user, that is. Hope that helps. Hi Bluegaspode, Just did the update to 1.3 and it seems that I have lost all my artwork. It was there in the previous version, and still shows up in iPeng on the same iPad. If you scroll quickly through a list of albums you see the grey disc placeholder icons for each album as they flash past, but once you stop scrolling these are quickly replaced with blank spaces where the artwork should be. BUT it did get a mention in Stereophile as having been at CES... The serious competition I see for high end is from Linn, who appear to have made streaming audio a cornerstone of their new range. Given their track record of sticking with things and developing them over the long haul- and their clear commitment to hi-fi audio - I tend to believe they will be around with these products for a long while. I am 100% committed to digitally stored and transported (2-channel) audio and know I will never go back to CDs so want to feel confident that my chosen partner in this will stick around and not get distracted by video or Facebook (!), or decide to drop it entirely after a year or two . Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.
For ripping and tagging on the Mac you might want to look at XLDhttp://tmkk.hp.infoseek.co.jp/xld/index_e.html. This usually does the trick for me in both flac and mp3 formats on the same ripping pass. Tags are pulled from CDDB and you get the chance to fix them before committing. If you subsequently find you need to redo any tags then Tag from the aforementioned Stephen Booth (http://sbooth.org/Tag/) works well. As for playlists I have had some success using VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html) which allows you to drag and drop files from the Finder to form a playlist which can then be saved as an m3u file in your designated Squeezebox Server folder. A quick playlist rescan and you'll find the list available for use. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71904 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I guess intuitive is a key word here. Thanks! You might want to look at Squeezeslave which can be set up on a Mac such that it starts automatically when you log in and runs as a headless - basically invisible - player. This means that you use the web interface and, once having selected squeezeslave as the player, there is no need to operate a separate player interface - you just select the tunes, playlists, albums, etc that you want to play, as if you were sending to a physical player, and off it goes. So it is like what you have seen with SoftSqueeze but without a visible (and actually unnecessary) 'player' emulation. There are pretty good installation instructions at http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeSlave#Mac_OS_X_installation. Playlists are saved and edited from within the SqueezeCenter interface on your PC. You need to ensure that you have a playlists directory defined on the 'Basic Settings' tab of the Settings page. You also need to ensure that this directory is writeable (i.e. not set as read only). Once you have got this then it is just a mattter of arranging your chosen playlist songs on the right hand side of the normal SC interface and then clicking on the small 'Save' icon (a quaint old-fashioned floppy disk that 20th century people used I believe). This then moves the list to the window on the left hand side and opens up a text box for you to input the name under which you want to save the list. Re: [slim] How To Use Last Fm?
Assuming you have a Lastfm account and have been scrobbling your tracks for some time then the system at Lastfm will have 'analysed' your music choices and identified several other folks that share some or all of your taste - these are designated as your 'neighbours'. So if you select play neighbours you will get a selection of music which has been scribbled by other people who share your tastes as defined by whatever algorithms Lastfm use to trawl through this stuff. I do this sometimes and it can throw up some interesting tracks that I might never have thought of listening to. And if you don't like what your neighbours do then you can skip a track and try the next suggestion. The other similar option is 'Play Recommended' which cues up tracks that Lastfm think you might like. I can't really tell the difference between 'neighbours' and recommended' to be honest - either can be generally enjoyable and sometimes enlightening. AFAIK 'Friends' requires some active choice by you of those others you can find on the Lastfm site with whom you feel particularly aligned musically (or accdeptance of their request to be your friend) and you can then choose to listen to their specific scrobbles rather than from the wider pool of neighbours. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55096 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

So when you log in with a wifi device, it just acts as a dumb display as shows the same thing as what the PC displays. i thought it was an application that needs to be installed on the wifi device itself (I guess this is what the native app will be). Not quite accurate - the skins can allow full control of the server and the squeezeboxes on your network just as if you were using the web interface at your PC. Different skins may have more or less controls on screen, or buried in menus, as part of their design choices but they are much more than simple dumb displays. The iPeng skin gives you lots of control of players and playlists, as well as displayng album art etc, all in a fairly iPod sort of interface. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54399 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

My only thought regarding your set up is to look at putting the playlist files themselves on a different drive from the music files which might force the pointers to include the full path. This is what I do and can make playlists that are universal. I am wondering if having the playlists on the same drive allows the path statements to get shortened as specifying the drive name will not be necessary. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54226 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeeze Centre wouldn't find music on computer
Not sure if I'm misunderstanding your actions in my speedreading, but you do understand that you have to initiate a rescan of the music folder in SqueezeCenter to get it to see new tracks which you have added. This step can be automated - which is what I do, setting it to do a full rescan at 2:00am every day when I am (usually) fast asleep and not listening to music. That way it is up-to-date every morning with anything I have added the day before. If I do need to play the new additions before the rescan (most times, actually) I just navigate through the Music Folders tree to find the track and hit play. This also has the action of adding it to the library database at the same time. Good job you caught this at 58 CDs rather than the 1,000 mark! davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52056 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The two which people here use on XP are EAC, which is free (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) but can be a bit complex to set up, and dBpoweramp, which is not free (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/) but reportedly more user friendly. The important thing is in either case to rip to a lossless format - most would recommend flac - so as to preserve the original contents of the CD for the highest fidelity of replay. The bonus with flac is that the SB will decode it in the machine so you only have to send the compressed stream via the network which effectively reduces the load and improves performance. If your internet connection is down when you rip then the automated lookup of the CD to get the data on names of tracks and artists will fail. I'm not sure how MP-11 handles this but it may have saved the rip with no tags and that may have made it hard to find. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52056 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeeze Centre wouldn't find music on computer
Not being a Media Player user I cannot check, but according to the google results I got there is such an option and I suspect, being M$, it is turned on by default. If this is the case then you have something of a problem as the Squeezebox, along with almost all other media players, is not allowed to read the files -even though they were your CDs! I suggest you check for the option in MP-11, make sure it is off and then rip a new CD. If, after rescanning your Squeezecenter library, you can see and play the new CD that's your answer. What you do about it depends on a few factors but there are a few suggestions we can go into oncd you confirm that this is the cause of your problems. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52056 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Controller Frustration
I bought a Controller for use with my Transporter a couple of months ago and although it was initially ok it seems to have become increasingly uncooperative in recent days. It had begun to frequently lose the network connection although a restart would normally fix this. For the past couple of days however it has been unable to get a proper IP address on my network (should be 192.168.1.xxx) always getting something which I think began with 259. Today I said enough of this and hit the factory reset option to try a clean start. However the result has been getting stuck in a dead end where the Controller runs what I assume is a set-up wizard (which I don't remember from the first time I set it up) and appears to connect to my network but then goes to a screen where it asks me to set up my Receiver - which of course I don't have - and cannot get out of this place without simply going back and doing it again. As of now the Controller is completely useless. I have tried disabling WEP security on my router and done multiple hard resets of the Controller and am now out of ideas. I would appreciate some help if anybody knows how to break out of this rut. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50315 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Album artwork not showing up
A little more background on your set up would help but a couple of comments from my experience. First of all the standard namings that SC looks for are cover.jpg, albumartsmall.jpg, folder.jpg, album.jpg, or thumb.jpg. If you want to use an alternative to one of these you can set that up via the Advanced Settings tab. The normal place to locate the image files is in the same directory as the album tracks for that album. Secondly you should make sure that you have done a full Clear and Reascan to ensure the database has grabbed all of the artwork. Finally, I did have some issues myself with cover art recently - not that it was missing but that it was being wrongly associated with incorrect albums. The solution in my case was to update to a newer nightly which fixed it. I suggest you try the same thing if yours is not a recent build. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42474 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Access Slimserver from work
Well, if you have iTunes on your PC then it is possible to stream music from home, it just can't be done securely. You can establish a dyndns account on the Mac at home so that you have an internet ip address for your home machine. Then set up your router so that ports 3483 and 9000 are forwarded to your Mac's local LAN address. Then on your work machine, in the iTunes menu, go to Advanced | Open Stream and enter the following: http://your_dyndns_address:9000/stream.mp3 Then in your web browser enter the address: http://your_dyndns_address:9000 This should load SqueezeCenter and show your library as at home. In the drop down list of players in the top right side you will see a referecne to the iTunes player (although it won't be called iTunes). Select this and then set it playing some music from your library and it should come out via iTunes. I'm not at my machine now and in any case use ssh so the details are slightly different so I can't absolutely guarantee that the above will work for you. Please be aware however that by doing this you will be opening up your machine and particularly your SqueezeCenter to all and sundry. If I got hold of your dyndns address or name then I could simply start your home squeezebox(s) playing anything from your library at any time, at maximum volume. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41695 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Is it time to retire my Squeezebox?
I have a SB1 also, as well as a couple of SB2's and a TP. Even though the SB1 is the only one of the 4 boxes which is actually wired to the router - the others are all wireless - it is the only one that has dropouts. I put this down to a combination of running an all-flac library and the small size of the buffer in the SB1. My cure has been to implement bitrate limiting for this player to 192 kbps and that seems to have done the trick. The newer boxes have an upsized buffer and, as I said, I can stream full strength flac to them all with no dropouts, so a new SB3 would no doubt solve your problem - assuming it is not some other network issue such as a neighbour's new wifi router on the same channel, or a microwave oven or cordless phone somewhere nearby causing interference. You could try the bitrate limiting trick on your SB1 to see if that fixes it. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41669 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Access Slimserver from work
It is certainly possible to do this - in fact I am doing it now. Take a look here http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?ConnectingRemotely for some details. The main things to do to enable this are a) get a fixed internet IP address for your home network. This is easily done by signing up with a site such as dyndns.org. b) set up ssh tunneling on your server PC so that you can access from outside without compromising security. c) forward ports 9000 and 3843 on your router to the server PC internal IP address. d) run softsqueeze on the remote machine and set up the ssh parameters to match your server details. e) limit bandwidth of the streaming for the remote instance of softsqueeze so as to avoid dropouts over a poor web connection. It can sound a bit daunting but it is a great thing to have once you have set it up - all your music available whilst in a hotel room for instance, or at a friends place. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41695 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It's not really clear what you are trying to do. Do you have a SqueezeBox or are you trying to use SlimServer/SqueezeCenter to play music on your PC? If you have an SB that will find the server automatically when you start it. If the latter then you should look at using the SB emulator, SoftSqueeze. Look for this under Help if you are running version 6.5 or Extras on version 7.0. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40262 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Problems Slimserver startup
Not sure I can help you on the first point - I assume you are on some flavour of Windows? On the second point it is important to understand that the Squeezebox is basically a dumb terminal with little of its own brain - it doesn't even know what time it is so has to ask a computer somewhere - either your local server or the virtual server at Squeeze Network. If your local machine is off then you have to be connected to SN to get the time - and you can get a whole bunch of other stuff there too including internet radio and if you have an mp3tunes account even your own music. I am seeing a different look to the forum interface today. When going into a thread using the last unread button I see a tree view of previous posts above the latest item, but showing poster names and titles only. Previously there was just all of the previous posts in full that could be scrolled back through to see what had been said and discussed up until that point. The new arrangement means you have no easy way to see what has been said by earlier posters, unless you have the time or the energy to open each level of the thread tree and look at the contents (which I don't). In my opinion this is a big step backwards.
