As it happens I can help here, being married to a Japanese translator.
The comment you got the App Store said:

I guess there aren't many people who are using SqueezeBox in Japan, but
this is something I recommend to those few. If you are a SqueezeBox user
and are complaining that there is no iPad version of iPeng, here is the
one for you. I've been using this since the previous version. It wasn't
bad in terms of ease of use, although the appearance wasn't very nice at
all. This new version is a success because they added a more detailed
appearance whilst keeping the basic layout as before. An image of your
SqueezeBox is shown on the selector of the player. This was also a
function iPeng of 2 generations before the current one, but probably
because of a problem with the patent or something it's now more of a
stylised image. This has led to a better review for SqueezePad, but
it's a worry for the future. Even allowing for such an unknown for
the future, I believe this one is worth the high price. Only if you are
a SqueezeBox user, that is.

Hope that helps. So, how about those player images - are they going to
stay?

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-08-26 Thread davep

Hi Bluegaspode,
Just did the update to 1.3 and it seems that I have lost all my
artwork. It was there in the previous version, and still shows up in
iPeng on the same iPad.

If you scroll quickly through a list of albums you see the grey disc
placeholder icons for each album as they flash past, but once you stop
scrolling these are quickly replaced with blank spaces where the
artwork should be.

Any ideas?

The serious competition I see for high end is from Linn, who appear to
have made streaming audio a cornerstone of their new range. Given
their track record of sticking with things and developing them over the
long haul- and their clear commitment to hi-fi audio - I tend to believe
they will be around with these products for a long while. I am 100%
committed to digitally stored and transported (2-channel) audio and know
I will never go back to CDs so want to feel confident that my chosen
partner in this will stick around and not get distracted by video or

Radio/Touch space. My point was that the TP has this pretty well
covered already with the added advantages of being able to share
infrastructure with lower spec devices elsewhere in your house for a
very flexible and realistic solution. Linn doesn't do the latter parts

I agree that the Sonus is more well known as a competitor in the

best to use WAV (as opposed to Apple Lossless), but are there issues
with streaming WAV size files (given that Squeezebox is limited to G).
 Is there a better solution?

FLAC has clear advantages as a solution:
1. Decent compression level to help streaming bandwidth
2. Compression is LOSLESS
3. Native support in SB players
4. Supports full range of tags (unlike WAV)
5. Free and not tied to proprietary company

Disadvantage for your plan is the iTunes does not rip to FLAC. However
several other well designed and supported prograns do such as EAC and
DbPoweramp.

Many, many people here on the forum use FLAC so support for any
quesitons is plentiful.

Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-27 Thread davep

For ripping and tagging on the Mac you might want to look at
XLDhttp://tmkk.hp.infoseek.co.jp/xld/index_e.html. This usually does
the trick for me in both flac and mp3 formats on the same ripping pass.
Tags are pulled from CDDB and you get the chance to fix them before
committing. If you subsequently find you need to redo any tags then
Tag from the aforementioned Stephen Booth (http://sbooth.org/Tag/)
works well.

As for playlists I have had some success using VLC
(http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html) which allows you to
drag and drop files from the Finder to form a playlist which can then be
saved as an m3u file in your designated Squeezebox Server folder. A
quick playlist rescan and you'll find the list available for use.

Just a word of clarification regarding use of the Receiver on its own
without buying the Controller. Officially you are not able to set up
the Receiver without use of the Controller. There is a work around,
documented somewhere on this forum, which has had several reports of
success but it remains an unofficial means of setting up and as such the
purchaser should do their homework first and be comfortable with this as
an approach.

Otherwise, as already mentioned, go for the SB Classic.

I guess intuitive is a key word here.

 Thanks!
You might want to look at Squeezeslave which can be set up on a Mac
such that it starts automatically when you log in and runs as a headless
- basically invisible - player. This means that you use the web
interface and, once having selected squeezeslave as the player, there is
no need to operate a separate player interface - you just select the
tunes, playlists, albums, etc that you want to play, as if you were
sending to a physical player, and off it goes. So it is like what you
have seen with SoftSqueeze but without a visible (and actually
unnecessary) 'player' emulation. There are pretty good installation
instructions at
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeSlave#Mac_OS_X_installation.

Of course this assumes that the SC web interface is acceptable as the
way of driving the whole thing

Not sure if this is the case with the official scrobbling plugin but
take a look at the Player tab on the Settings page and you should see
an item related to LastFM or Scrobbling in the drop down list. Take a
look at this page and see if it has a check box to enable that player
to scrobble.

This may seem like there are too many places you have to set up
scroblling but it is done for people like myself with multiple players
who do not want them all to scrobble (e.g. kids music, etc).

Re: [slim] How to save playlists

2008-12-17 Thread davep

Playlists are saved and edited from within the SqueezeCenter interface
on your PC. You need to ensure that you have a playlists directory
defined on the 'Basic Settings' tab of the Settings page. You also
need to ensure that this directory is writeable (i.e. not set as read
only). Once you have got this then it is just a mattter of arranging
your chosen playlist songs on the right hand side of the normal SC
interface and then clicking on the small 'Save' icon (a quaint
old-fashioned floppy disk that 20th century people used I believe).

This then moves the list to the window on the left hand side and opens
up a text box for you to input the name under which you want to save
the list. And that's it really.

For on the fly adding of individual tracks to existing playlists there
is the Playlist Manager plugin which allows you to add the currenlty
playing track to any of your defined playlists - or start a new
playlist with it. All from the remote control, so may be more of what
you are looking for.

Thanks for this.

My workaround: go into SC on the server and select Random Mix under
Music Library. Set up your preferences for genre, size of list, etc
and then hover over Random Songs to bring up the options and click on
the Heart icon for favourites. This will then save Random Songs as a
favourite. On IPeng you can get to this via the More icon on the
footer bar. If you want you can then edit the configuration to put the
favourites icon right on the footer bar. Then you have only 2 clicks to
get to the Random Songs button.

Re: [slim] How To Use Last Fm?

2008-11-14 Thread davep

Assuming you have a Lastfm account and have been scrobbling your tracks
for some time then the system at Lastfm will have 'analysed' your music
choices and identified several other folks that share some or all of
your taste - these are designated as your 'neighbours'. So if you
select play neighbours you will get a selection of music which has been
scribbled by other people who share your tastes as defined by whatever
algorithms Lastfm use to trawl through this stuff. I do this sometimes
and it can throw up some interesting tracks that I might never have
thought of listening to. And if you don't like what your neighbours do
then you can skip a track and try the next suggestion.

The other similar option is 'Play Recommended' which cues up tracks
that Lastfm think you might like. I can't really tell the difference
between 'neighbours' and recommended' to be honest - either can be
generally enjoyable and sometimes enlightening.

AFAIK 'Friends' requires some active choice by you of those others you
can find on the Lastfm site with whom you feel particularly aligned
musically (or accdeptance of their request to be your friend) and you
can then choose to listen to their specific scrobbles rather than from
the wider pool of neighbours.

Not quite accurate - the skins can allow full control of the server and
the squeezeboxes on your network just as if you were using the web

on screen, or buried in menus, as part of their design choices but they
are much more than simple dumb displays. The iPeng skin gives you lots

That's because the remote is not (yet) a player. However if you wait

should be enabled and able to function as an independent player (i.e.
it can even play different tracks to those playing through the

My only thought regarding your set up is to look at putting the
playlist files themselves on a different drive from the music files
which might force the pointers to include the full path. This is what
I do and can make playlists that are universal. I am wondering if
having the playlists on the same drive allows the path statements to
get shortened as specifying the drive name will not be necessary.

This latter sounds just like the broadcast station JazzFM which we used

even remotely be called Jazz. All I have heard so far dipping in and

offered decent doses of serious jazz rather than this dreary stuff

Re: [slim] Squeeze Centre wouldn't find music on computer

2008-09-08 Thread davep

Not sure if I'm misunderstanding your actions in my speedreading, but
you do understand that you have to initiate a rescan of the music
folder in SqueezeCenter to get it to see new tracks which you have
added. This step can be automated - which is what I do, setting it to
do a full rescan at 2:00am every day when I am (usually) fast asleep
and not listening to music. That way it is up-to-date every morning
with anything I have added the day before.

If I do need to play the new additions before the rescan (most times,
actually) I just navigate through the Music Folders tree to find the
track and hit play. This also has the action of adding it to the
library database at the same time.

Good job you caught this at 58 CDs rather than the 1,000 mark!

program would you recommend to go with Sqeezebox?

The two which people here use on XP are EAC, which is free
(http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) but can be a bit complex to set up, and
dBpoweramp, which is not free (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/) but
reportedly more user friendly.

The important thing is in either case to rip to a lossless format -
most would recommend flac - so as to preserve the original contents of
the CD for the highest fidelity of replay. The bonus with flac is that
the SB will decode it in the machine so you only have to send the
compressed stream via the network which effectively reduces the load
and improves performance.

If your internet connection is down when you rip then the automated
lookup of the CD to get the data on names of tracks and artists will
fail. I'm not sure how MP-11 handles this but it may have saved the
rip with no tags and that may have made it hard to find.

Not being a Media Player user I cannot check, but according to the
google results I got there is such an option and I suspect, being M$,
it is turned on by default. If this is the case then you have
something of a problem as the Squeezebox, along with almost all other
media players, is not allowed to read the files -even though they were
your CDs! I suggest you check for the option in MP-11, make sure it is
off and then rip a new CD. If, after rescanning your Squeezecenter
library, you can see and play the new CD that's your answer.

What you do about it depends on a few factors but there are a few
suggestions we can go into oncd you confirm that this is the cause of
your problems.

What I think bpa was saying was that there have been 300-odd downloads

the number of downloads/users of the main plugin itself. The iPlayer
add-on is a relatively recent, and dare I say somewhat obscure,
development to allow interfacing of the newer BBC radio menu
structures. For many people, including myself, not having this - or
even being aware of its existence - is not a big deal as you can do
straightforward things like playing Radio 4 live perfectly well without
it, and I suspect that this is what many users actually do.

I suspect that the figures would show a significantly larger user base
for the AlienBBC plugin - many hundreds if not thousands.

You do have to ensure that the address of the music files in the

[slim] Controller Frustration

2008-07-28 Thread davep

I bought a Controller for use with my Transporter a couple of months ago
and although it was initially ok it seems to have become increasingly
uncooperative in recent days. It had begun to frequently lose the
network connection although a restart would normally fix this. For the
past couple of days however it has been unable to get a proper IP
address on my network (should be 192.168.1.xxx) always getting
something which I think began with 259.

Today I said enough of this and hit the factory reset option to try a
clean start. However the result has been getting stuck in a dead end
where the Controller runs what I assume is a set-up wizard (which I
don't remember from the first time I set it up) and appears to connect
to my network but then goes to a screen where it asks me to set up my
Receiver - which of course I don't have - and cannot get out of this
place without simply going back and doing it again.

As of now the Controller is completely useless. I have tried disabling
WEP security on my router and done multiple hard resets of the
Controller and am now out of ideas.

I would appreciate some help if anybody knows how to break out of this
rut.

Re: [slim] View current playlist on Duet controller

2008-07-05 Thread davep

I just click with the centre button on the Controller when it is showing
the Now Playing screen. That should take you to the current playlist.
If you aren't at the Now Playing screen you can click on the Home key
and then scroll to the top of the list and click on Now Playing.

Re: [slim] Thread/Forum Read Marking Type

2008-06-30 Thread davep

Mike,
this is actually something I had wanted for some time, as someone whose
normal method of browsing the forums is to click on New Posts but who
can sometimes get interrupted in a session and lose the tagging of
unread new posts of genuine interest before the next session.

However when I did New Posts this morning I got 397 items shown which
includes dozens of ones I will never want to read (NAS configuration
anyone?) and lots that I can't read (German, French, etc). As it is
this is not my ideal solution - a 10 day buffer seems way to much for
me.

What I would like is the ability to wipe the slate clean at any point
and mark all posts as read so that next time I can start with genuine
new posts and take it from there.

Is this possible?

Re: [slim] remote streaming

2008-05-15 Thread davep

Pippin,
have you seen SimplifyMedia in action on an iPhone/iPod Touch? I know
that this has nothing to do with using Squeezecenter but it does
actually allow streaming audio on the iPhone. I have sat in San
Francisco and streamed music (mp3) from my home server in Hong Kong via
my iPod Touch with no problems.

SimplifyMedia is free and includes server apps for XP, OSX and Linux
plus clients for various devices including (a pretty neat) one for the
iPhone/Touch.

Re: [slim] What do you do when your SB/TP locks up?

2008-04-22 Thread davep

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46642

Question: What do you do when your SB/TP locks up?

- Go to the trouble of unplugging it?
- Reboot the computer with SS on it?
- Stop and restart SS?

My TP still locks up occasionally - say perhaps once per week if I am
using it regularly. Happens when I am doing something with the remote
and suddenly the responsiveness stops and the music in the buffer plays
out before stopping. Neither the remote nor the buttons in the front
panel have any effect and the only way is to remove the power cord and
re-insert. Annoying but not impossible to live with.

I would however really like to know what causes it and whether it can
be cured.

You're not doing anything wrong - the system is designed to play music
which is stored on the computer via the SB and hence into a hi-fi or
other external means of producing the sound. The whole point is not to
play it on the PC, otherwise you could just use Winamp or similar. (The
idea is to get the computer out of the listening environment).

However, if you do want to also be able to listen at the PC you can run
the software SB emulator (called SoftSqueeze) and control this as if it
were a separate SB.

I'm not sure if a programmable remote would mimic the exact same way of

Re: [slim] Album artwork not showing up

2008-01-19 Thread davep

A little more background on your set up would help but a couple of
comments from my experience. First of all the standard namings that SC
looks for are cover.jpg, albumartsmall.jpg, folder.jpg,
album.jpg, or thumb.jpg. If you want to use an alternative to one
of these you can set that up via the Advanced Settings tab. The normal
place to locate the image files is in the same directory as the album
tracks for that album.

Secondly you should make sure that you have done a full Clear and
Reascan to ensure the database has grabbed all of the artwork.

Finally, I did have some issues myself with cover art recently - not
that it was missing but that it was being wrongly associated with
incorrect albums. The solution in my case was to update to a newer
nightly which fixed it. I suggest you try the same thing if yours is
not a recent build.

Re: [slim] Access Slimserver from work

2008-01-03 Thread davep

Well, if you have iTunes on your PC then it is possible to stream music
from home, it just can't be done securely. You can establish a dyndns
account on the Mac at home so that you have an internet ip address for
your home machine. Then set up your router so that ports 3483 and 9000
are forwarded to your Mac's local LAN address.

Then on your work machine, in the iTunes menu, go to Advanced | Open
Stream and enter the following:
http://your_dyndns_address:9000/stream.mp3

Then in your web browser enter the address:
http://your_dyndns_address:9000

This should load SqueezeCenter and show your library as at home. In
the drop down list of players in the top right side you will see a
referecne to the iTunes player (although it won't be called iTunes).
Select this and then set it playing some music from your library and it
should come out via iTunes.

I'm not at my machine now and in any case use ssh so the details are
slightly different so I can't absolutely guarantee that the above will
work for you.

Please be aware however that by doing this you will be opening up your
machine and particularly your SqueezeCenter to all and sundry. If I
got hold of your dyndns address or name then I could simply start your
home squeezebox(s) playing anything from your library at any time, at
maximum volume.

Re: [slim] Is it time to retire my Squeezebox?

2008-01-03 Thread davep

I have a SB1 also, as well as a couple of SB2's and a TP. Even though
the SB1 is the only one of the 4 boxes which is actually wired to the
router - the others are all wireless - it is the only one that has
dropouts. I put this down to a combination of running an all-flac
library and the small size of the buffer in the SB1. My cure has been
to implement bitrate limiting for this player to 192 kbps and that
seems to have done the trick.

The newer boxes have an upsized buffer and, as I said, I can stream
full strength flac to them all with no dropouts, so a new SB3 would no
doubt solve your problem - assuming it is not some other network issue
such as a neighbour's new wifi router on the same channel, or a
microwave oven or cordless phone somewhere nearby causing interference.
You could try the bitrate limiting trick on your SB1 to see if that
fixes it.

Re: [slim] Access Slimserver from work

2008-01-02 Thread davep

It is certainly possible to do this - in fact I am doing it now.

Take a look here
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?ConnectingRemotely for some
details.

The main things to do to enable this are

a) get a fixed internet IP address for your home network. This is
easily done by signing up with a site such as dyndns.org.

b) set up ssh tunneling on your server PC so that you can access from
outside without compromising security.

c) forward ports 9000 and 3843 on your router to the server PC internal
IP address.

d) run softsqueeze on the remote machine and set up the ssh parameters
to match your server details.

e) limit bandwidth of the streaming for the remote instance of
softsqueeze so as to avoid dropouts over a poor web connection.

It can sound a bit daunting but it is a great thing to have once you
have set it up - all your music available whilst in a hotel room for
instance, or at a friends place.

It's not really clear what you are trying to do. Do you have a
SqueezeBox or are you trying to use SlimServer/SqueezeCenter to play
music on your PC? If you have an SB that will find the server
automatically when you start it. If the latter then you should look at
using the SB emulator, SoftSqueeze. Look for this under Help if you are

Re: [slim] Problems Slimserver startup

2007-10-28 Thread davep

Not sure I can help you on the first point - I assume you are on some
flavour of Windows? On the second point it is important to understand
that the Squeezebox is basically a dumb terminal with little of its own
brain - it doesn't even know what time it is so has to ask a computer
somewhere - either your local server or the virtual server at Squeeze
Network. If your local machine is off then you have to be connected to
SN to get the time - and you can get a whole bunch of other stuff there
too including internet radio and if you have an mp3tunes account even
your own music.

Hope this helps,

You don't _have_ to tag mp3 files to burn them to CD, only if you want

Re: [slim] Help with Slimserver installation

2007-09-02 Thread davep

Try something simple first - turn off/disable both your antivirus and
your firewall and see what happens. If you get SlimServer and your SB
to work properly then you reactivate each of the disabled programs and
see which one is the culprit.

On the firewall you need TCP and UDP exceptions for one of the two
ports and, since I can never be bothered to remember which I have TCP
and UDP set for both.

OK, maybe we are looking at the wrong thing here. If the problem is
that after some period of scanning your music files the system quits
could it be a problem with something in the music files directory, such
as a recursive playlist?

Could you try putting a few music files into a new clean directory and
pointing Slimserver at this and doing a scan? If this completes and you
can navigate and play music with the SB then it might help show that the
SS installation is OK but the problem lies elsewhere.

Just for the record, what version of Slimserver are you running (details
can be found at the foot of the page when you click on Server
Settings)?

Re: [slim] Changing Music Folders

2007-08-25 Thread davep

If your two sets of files are in truly separate folders (i.e one is not
a subdirectory of the other), you have no symbolic links between the
folders, and you have done a complete clear and rescan (not just a
'changed music' scan), then you ought to be seeing only your new flacs.

[slim] Did the forum interface change?

2007-08-17 Thread davep

I am seeing a different look to the forum interface today. When going
into a thread using the last unread button I see a tree view of
previous posts above the latest item, but showing poster names and
titles only. Previously there was just all of the previous posts in
full that could be scrolled back through to see what had been said and
discussed up until that point. The new arrangement means you have no
easy way to see what has been said by earlier posters, unless you have
the time or the energy to open each level of the thread tree and look
at the contents (which I don't).

In my opinion this is a big step backwards. If there is any way to
return to the previous simpler forum format I would strongly urge that
those in control do so.

Surely you're not trying to stream flac to a Palm Tx and decode it
locally? I had Pocket Tunes running on my Tx at one point and just
used it as an mp3 stream reader, letting slimserver do the transcoding
from flac to mp3 before sending it out over wireless. If you play
around with the bitrate limiting on the player settings this should
allow you to get the highest rate that provides smooth streaming and
playing without choking the Palm's somewhat limited processor
abilities.

Re: [slim] SS album art titles...

If you go to server settings and look in the Interface section you'll
find a place where you can enter an alternate name for the cover art
files which SS will use to identify and process them.

It seems if Slim bundled a sufficiently powerful NAS with the software

Isn't this what SD were aiming to do when they put together the Infrant
bundle. It doesn't get mentioned on the main product pages of the SD
website but I see that if you go to the Buy Now page it is still
listed: 2 x SB3 + 1 x Infrant NAS for US$1,499. I'd always assumed
that this was intended to be an integrated server+storage+player
solution. However, the blurb doesn't actually mention that SS is
installed (or even installable) on the NAS but seems to present it as
just a 1Tb storage solution. Also, according to at least one report on
this forum the Infrant isn't actually powerful enough to run SS
decently, so I'm not really sure what positioning SD were targeting
with this bundle after all.

Re: [slim] Track playing display problem - Newbie !

You can make this happen automatically after a set time by using the
Now Playing screensaver. This is set up under the Player Settings
menu, you can choose what is displayed and what is the delay time
before it kicks in.

I think that squeezeslave

be a more up to date utility than slimp3slave for what you want to do.
