The Zero makes perfect sense as a player in certain configurations. Especially if the player is hooked up to an AVR, the Zero makes a lot of sense. Sales have been improving for far too long now. I understand that streaming and such is big and will get bigger. But I strongly believe that people which want to own their music will remain more than a niche. This is not gonna save Squeezebox, though. It will remain a niche because it's too complicated and technical. I actually believe the average consumer of multi-room audio is getting less tech-savvy. Chromecast Audio has a nice price, presumably because Google is setting the price based on a mixed calculation (you don't just generate revenue by purchasing the hardware, but also by using more Google services). IMO, the way to exploit the cheap hardware is by hacking it. Google Cast's strength is it's polish and ease-of-use. But I presume it lacks many of the advanced features I like about the Squeeze ecosystem. Does the Chromecast Audio, when used in conjunction with Squeeze2Upnp, support (i) tight synchronization, (ii) ReplayGain, (iii) gapless playback, etc.? If it doesn't, I don't find the device all that exciting. Although, you know what would be really cool? Usual answer: I also think Logitech somewhat misjudged the market. But, who cares? The system is open-source. I don't need Logitech hardware. In fact, I don't own a single Logitech device. The server runs just fine on my NAS. My Hifiberries were about a 100 each and deliver transparent sound quality. While not quite as versatile and audiophile, my setup is nicely complemented by software player running on my mobile devices. SB Player on my Android phone is perfect for listening on headphones in bed. Yup, the official Logitech app as well as SqueezeCommander are currently unmaintained. You probably could have figured this out prior to installing by looking at the date of the last update. The latest version of each of those apps is older than three years, so they couldn't possibly have been tested against Lollipop. The claim that an SSD allows for very fast scanning is highly debatable. LMS and its database are gonna fit into RAM on many setups. As RAM is faster than an SSD, the SSD hardly matters. It's also not a strategy to guarantee uptime (once again, failure rates of brand-new HDDs aren't that much lower). Besides, replacement of HDDs will not protect you against user errors (e.g., accidental deletions of data), malware, or the like. If you need 24/7 uptime, go for a RAID (replace drives when they fail or when it's time to upgrade the entire RAID). But RAID is no backup, either. (Computer) speakers are part of Logitech's core business, too. And recall that Logitech got big through *wireless* keyboards and mice. Squeezeboxes are wireless audio products. As such, they fit reasonably well in Logitech's product portfolio. Anyways, I think that nowadays, people want two features in a speaker. First, they want it to be portable so that you put it in the kitchen or on the balcony without hassle. Second, they want it to be networked. Of course, bluetooth/smartphone connectivity is a biggie. But again, sync and uPnP-style stuff is really taking off, too. Not just Sonos, but almost every big player -- Pio, Sony, Denon, you name it -- is in that game by now. And wireless speakers are becoming more similar to off-the-shelf items like computer mice. I suppose the UE Boom line is going well for them but I bet they're losing revenues with a lot of their other audio-related products. So I'm really contemplating putting my LMS on a Broadwell-based Intel NUC. They are expected to become available by the end of February. I prefer to put my data on a NAS, though. Why not get a new system with a new hard drive? A 1 TB 3.5 hard drive costs about GBP 40. IMO, it's just not economical anymore to repair that system. Or, if there is an economical way, it involves scoring used parts off ebay at a bargain price. I prefer cheap and compact solutions which often aren't USB-based (i.e., I prefer utilizing on-board stuff such as built-in HDMI outs or small internal extension cards). Although, I know many people successfully integrate USB DACs so I think your point is a bit moot anyway. I am also discouraged that pretty much all of the proprietary music server systems Me, too. Perhaps companies think it's easier to generate profits from proprietary systems. The software in the Squeezebox ecosystem is free and open source. Capable, cheap, and relatively open hardware is widely available. So you cannot lock people into your brand's products like Apple and Sonos can. --- For me, one important thing hampering the adoption of LMS is that it's not really plug-and-play. Since Logitech stopped production, you cannot simply get up and running in 10-15 minutes anymore. That's different from competing solutions where you basically hook up a stand-alone speaker or small black set-top box you bought at Best Buy or Amazon and blast away. For many people, DIY squeezebox is way too technical. I recently set up a system for a friend. I'm almost regretting it now. I had to do all the work. Furthermore, he lacks the IT expertise to properly carry out administrative changes to LMS or the clients. Wrong forum? Would have been more sensible to post this in 3rd party software if you ask me. In my opinion, the Logitech app is slow (sometimes almost unresponsive) and limited in functionality (it doesn't integrate nicely with some of the plugins). Some other controller apps are prettier. The Logitech app hasn't been updated in quite some time - thus, the current release hasn't been tested against recent versions of Android. I like Orange Squeeze. Its GUI feels snappy. The album art display looks good. Overall, it's been running smoothly for me although I currently am affected by a bug in the latest version. Squeezer is a FOSS option. I've tested early builds. There was much to like, but the app didn't seem 100% stable and solid to me. I am having issues with the latest stable release of Orange Squeeze (2.0.14). Occasionally, when I start Orange Squeeze, it cannot connect to my LMS (version 7.7.3). When I then try to manually select the server (it is pinned so I can select it), it gives me a popup saying something like waiting for internet connection to be restored. check that you're not in airplane mode. However, I am connected to the local network as well as to the internet. Via the same device's browser, I can access the web interface of my LMS just fine. The device is a Nexus 7 2013.
