Chip makers are bringing out new DAC chips all the time, which -implies- there's been development, but does that mean new DACs are intrinsically better than older ones, in the same way that a new CPU is presumed better than a 10 y/o one? Does anybody have any experience in purchasing one of these newer small-form DAC devices because they were trying to make their SB better, and if so what were their experiences? [slim] How well do the DACs hold up nowadays?
I've been away from the SB scene for a while (except for using them to, well, listening to music) but my wife bought me a Little Dot I+ headphone amp for Christmas and I think I'm getting the bug again. So my question is, after all these years, how good are the SB DACs compared to what is on the market these days? The Transporter DAC was considered the best around at the time, if I remember correctly. Even the SB3 DAC was well rated. How do these compare to some of the cheap small DACs like the FiiO? Do you get better DACs in your mobile phone nowadays than the venerable Transporter? Cheers all, and happy new year :-) *family room:* receiver; *kitchen:* boom; *garden:* classic; *bedroom:* boom; *anywhere:* controller, squeezecommander, android squeezeplayer 'last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/buggle52) simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102852 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'd find that highly unlikely, no matter where one lives. ;) I think it's more that the vendor agreed to the conditions of replacement laid out by the OP by sending a goodwill Radio, but did not fulfill the conditions by also returning the original. They could (and will) argue the Radio was a direct replacement for the Touch but under EU regulations this can only happen if the replacement is of equal (or more) value, which is not the case as the Touch was being sold at a substantially higher price than the Radio. simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98825 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

In fact only 14% of participants said they don't use them. Clearly any future support for the SB ecosystem must offer online capabilities in order to be successful. - Internet Radio is the most popular form of online service, with 59% of participants using it. This shows how important it is to ensure a partnership with TuneIn or another similar provider can be maintained. - Pandora is the second most popular service, which I find surprising as it's not available in most countries! - Perhaps less surprising is the popularity of Spotify, as it's taken over from Rhapsody and Napster as the on-demand service of choice. - A final note to the Others, which include BBC iPlayer, Sirius/XM, and some emerging and localised services such as Quobuz. In conclusion, there is an obvious need for SBs to continue to access online services, and any replacement server application or hardware must be able to meet this need. [slim] Community Squeezebox: The Name Vote (Round 2)
As Round 1 set the cat amongst the pigeons, it only seemed fair to follow it up with a Round 2, taking the top 2 winners from Round 1 and combining them with a few others, including the much-requested I don't care/call it what you like/they're all rubbish option. Bear in mind this is likely to be purely a codename, while we wait patiently for some marketing god to give up their Sonos, buy a Squeezebox and put us all to shame with the perfect moniker. So here are the nominations (drumroll...) *Open Music Box* - The most popular choice from Round 1, Open Music Box is probably the least pretentious name choice but its initials (OMB) make a great codename which provides future variations Boom OMB, Touch OMB, Wireless OMB... oh what fun. (Suggested by erland) *Melodia* - On the other end of the pretentiousness scale we have Melodia, meaning pleasant song in Latin. I can almost see the flowing calligraphic text emblazoned in graphite on the front. (Suggested by erland) *Phoenix* - A name with meaning; the Squeezebox -shall- rise from the ashes. However it is a popular choice for consumer products (presumably with similar reincarnations) which could prove tricky in the future, but as a codename is perfectly acceptable. (Suggested by P Nelson) *Harmonic* - I missed this from the first round due to its closeless to music-game-developers Harmonix but public pressure has demanded this be included, and for good reason; it's a great word and captures the subtlety of well-reproduced music. (Suggested by dustinsterk) *None of the Above* - Choose this if you mean I don't like any of 'em, I think name choosing is pointless, Let the hardware team decide, Box Wot Makes Noises, etc. I could separate them about but as they would all lead to the same thing - a codename being chosen by the hardware team - we might as well combine them. simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98200 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

For example the code name of the SB Touch was fab4, the radio's code name was baby etc. We need something like that for this project. John S. What's your timeframe for needing a name, John? But on the player side it does not look like we will be using SqueezePlay which had the applet infrstructure. Some simple aspects of player to server communication for things like IR blaster was embedded in slimproto, but I don't think we need to stick with that if we don't want to. A lot of work was done with JSON outside of slimproto. I completely agree for now, but I think we need to have in the back of our minds a desire to move away from LMS -if that's the longer term plan- and planning with this philosophy now could save many a headache later. My own opinion is that the LMS architecture has had its day and we could, if inclined, develop a new architecture that could emulate slimproto to allow older SBs to function without requiring new firmware. simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98179 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

How many of them do you think would prefer to instead spend that money to replace the old devices with a fresh new Community Squeezebox with excellent audio quality ? People often want a lot of things but usually when they realize they have to pay for it they don't think it's worth it. Damn you and your realism ;) I think this all depends on where this project is heading. From my standpoint, I've made an investment in older SB devices and I'd like to contribute to a project that will allow me to extend and improve on that investment. Also, I've yet to see anything on the market that provides a similar service at the same price point. If we really are talking about getting proper corporate support, maybe the SB2/3/Boom owners would provide a great market from-the-go to buy more devices? Regardless, there are plenty of community projects that are doing well without corporate investment - just look at the media centre ecosystem with MediaPortal, XBMC, etc. I'm not saying you're wrong, and I do think it's too early to be planning a complete replacement to LMS, but I don't think we should rule it out. simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98179 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Community Squeezebox: The Name Vote (Round 1)
A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98148 Question: What should we call this new device? - Vuvuzela - OpEncore - Melodia - Zela - Brikk - FLÄKK - Open Music Box After weeks of deliberation, fighting and lobbying, the public have narrowed down the suggestions for the (potential) Community-Funded Squeezebox to 7 choices. Nobody likes most of them, and plenty despise all of them. This hasn't stopped most democratic countries from stumbling along, and neither will it stop us. So without further adieu, here we have The Vote (Round 1*). The nominations are... *Vuvuzela *- You probably know that squeezebox is also a colloquial term for an accordion, so it stands to reason that its spiritual offspring should also be named after an instrument. Clarinet? Harpsichord? No, let's go with the Vuvuzela; infamously known for being the prevalent sound of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, who's distraction caused insert your team to bow out prematurely. (Suggested by castalla) *OpEncore *- Blending two words together is cool. Encore means again in French, and is often used to entice performers back onto stage at the end of a musical event. It may be subtle, but it strikes parallels with the aims of this project, and of course the new device will be open-source. Open - Encore - OpEncore. (Suggested by erland/simbo) *Melodia *- Melodies are nice, and as it happens Melodia means pleasant song in Latin, which also makes us sound clever and little pretentious. But this is a music playing device, it comes with the territory. (Suggested by erland) *Zela *- A play on the oh-so-popular Vuvuzela (see above) but without the connotations of a tinnitus-like buzz that you still can't get out of your head three years on. But it's also a nice word in itself and rolls off the tongue well. It's also so tenuous you can explain it to your mates down the pub time and time again. (Suggested by simbo) *Brikk *- Perhaps a nod to the final resting state of the GEN1 models, it also nicely describes its purpose - a solid-looking box that sits near your HiFi and acts as the cornerstone of your home music solution. See what I did there? (Suggested by Mnyb) *FLÄKK *- No, not an Ikea bookcase, but perhaps a reference to the file format de jour and darling of this community; older members will remind us that the first Slim device was called the SliMP3, harking back to a more innocent, compressed age. Let's hope it doesn't come flat-packed. (Suggested by Ghandi) *Open Music Box* - Here is a box. A musical box. A product that delivers exactly as described; a box that plays music, and it's open (in a software and hardware development sense). On another level it's a nostalgic reference to the children's toys that open up to reveal a magical world. Or something. (Suggested by erland) * As for Round 2, let's see where this goes first, eh? simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98148 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] O2 Joggler v Squeezebox Touch for Audio Quality
I've compared an SB3 (Classic) with a Joggler, and I can safely say, even without a double-blind-ab-test, that the analogue output of the SB3 is far superior to the Joggler. Like you I tried swapping out my main SB with the Joggler as it's aesthetically nicer and easier to control, but the sound quality made me immediately switch it back. Another problem I found was that the volume level coming out of the Joggler was too low, which meant I had to up the preamp db level, which caused a nasty pop when it turned on. A USB audio dongle is the way to go I think if you want to use the Joggler, as long as you don't mind it sticking out the side, or you get a 90-degree cable and stick it behind. simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96844 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

This is only a short hop away from seeing Rhapsody-branded players on the shelves, manufactured by Logitech. I'd need to think about the pros and cons (to us as consumers) to your idea, but my knee-jerk feeling is a negative one - I don't like the idea of being tied into a single online service, especially as it's an emerging area that still has a lot of potential for growth and innovation. simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96284 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?
I envy those who feel content to let their Squeezeboxen plod along with local access and limited functionality. Naturally those who are concerned by the potential loss of online services are most likely to be those who use them currently, but I think for many of us our expectations are slightly different... One of the things that initially appealed to me when I got my first SB was the -extensibility-. When the first Squeezeboxes hit the shelves there was little notion of online streaming services, social music services and the like. The amazing thing about the Squeezebox line has been it's ability to adapt to the changes in the way we listen to music, and to allow existing SB owners to benefit from these changes. Even now, Rhapsody and Spotify won't be the last word in online music services and we're likely to see new and novel services appear in the future as the music industry (finally) comes into the 21st Century. What -has- changed now, is that we can't (smugly) rest on our laurels knowing that our Squeezeboxes will reap the benefits of these changes, thanks to a savvy purchase oh-so-many years ago and some funding that we can't really claim our initial purchase to have supported. My expectations of the Squeezebox remain the same, even in the face of this news, but now we can't rely on Logitech to meet those expectations; it falls to us as Squeezebox users. I would genuinely like to be involved, in whatever small way, in keeping the Squeezebox alive. Mostly because I'm buggered if I'm going to fork out for a replacement. simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
