Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win Conflict with WSJT
Hi Wes, You missed the point of this thread. We all know you can manually import an ADIF file from WSJT-X or any other program. The original question was if there was any other way to import QSOs from WSJT-X besides a manual import. Instead of manually importing every month or so, many DX4WIN users would like each QSO to be automatically imported into DX4WIN as it is logged in WSJT-X. This feature is already available with MMTTY when making RTTY contacts. When bands are wide open like on 6M, it is important to be able to import QSOs from WSJT-X in real time so that we can quickly make spots on the cluster to update other ops about band openings. Manual imports take too long. We need real time updates via UDP broadcasts like what most other leading logging programs provide. Even if Paul would provide this advanced feature, there is no reason why you could not continue doing manual updates every month or so if you prefer. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message From: WESLEY ATTAWAY Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2024 10:54 PM To: David Perry, N4QS Cc: Keith Beebe W3KB ; Kurt Zimmerman - W2MW ; dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win Conflict with WSJT You can import WSJTX log right now …there is no need to fix anything. Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win Conflict with WSJT
Yes, I also use Macro Recorder to run a script to import the log from WSJT-X. But it costs $50. There are some free key mapper apps available, but I could never get them to work. Macro Recorder works great and is easy to setup. Paul should provide a direct way to import WSJT-X QSOs into DX4WIN. We have been asking for this feature for years. The simplest solution would be to use UDP broadcast functions that are already supported in WSJT-X and other loggers such as N1MM. It is a shame that Paul will not address this As less elegant solution would be to provide a one key ability to initiate a manual import of the WSJT-X file into DX4WIN. In Preferences, we should be able to specify the location of the WSJT-X log file. We should then be able to specify a hotkey that will initiate a direct import, but this would involve importing the entire log file from WSJT-X and ignoring duplicates. This poor man's version would at least eliminate the need for key mappers. The best solution is for Paul to provide the automatic import of each QSO as it is logged in WSJT-X via UDP broadcasts. This feature works beautifully between WSJT-X and N1mm and many other general logging programs 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Keith Beebe W3KB Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2024 3:54 PM To: Kurt Zimmerman - W2MW ; dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win Conflict with WSJT To log WSJT-X contacts into DX4WIN: I am using a separate program called Macro Recorder. Once that is done (the creation of a specific Macro) it takes no more than a few seconds to import into DX4WIN. I have one button on the keyboard (in my case the UP button) that activates the specific macro. You can see all the "moves" of the mouse and the various windows as it runs through the steps to process it (importing the WSJT-X log into DX4WIN). [Dx4win] What is the future of DX4WIN?
To all DX4WIN users: We really need Paul to do something. He promised the databases would be available on the next update, but that was four years ago. I have been asking for full integration with WSJT-X for years to no avail. This is a great program with a very active user base, but very little commitment from Paul. I wonder if Paul would be willing to sell his interest in the product to a group of users. We might all consider buying him out and then forming our own development team and support group. We could even make it open source to encourage more developers to get involved. Paul, I think it is about time that you let us know what your future plans entail. It is not fair to your loyal users to keep them in the dark and not provide any further development. We all scratch our heads and talk among ourselves, but we just cannot figure out why you no longer want to support your fine program. Are you bored? Have health problems? Lost interest? Bottom line, what would it take to buy you out? I would be happy to lead a user group to see if we can do just that. I would not do it for any profit motive, and my time and money would be provided for the benefit of all. In fact, if you were willing to talk I would suggest that we form a 501(c)(3) to make it a non-profit venture. I personally think it would be fun for the users to take ownership in the application. The biggest issue is can we find users who have the technical background to support the product? I have no idea what programming languages and database software you use to power DX4WIN, but whatever you use is working great. Would you want to continue to provide overall technical leadership or would you prefer to retire? All of these questions and issues would have to be discussed. Can you project your future revenue streams over the next three years? Can you provide actual revenue over the past three years? If so, I am sure we can monetize your financial interest in DX4WIN as it stands today. You have a great product that has stood the test of time over 25 years. I am sure you would like to see it continue well into the future. I am a former partner with Deloitte & Touche and for the last 30 years have owned and operated three family businesses. I am now retired, but I have the background to help in such a transaction. My sole interest is to see DX4WIN become more actively developed and supported for benefit of the general ham radio community. Paul, please let me know via the reflector or privately if the time is right for you to discuss future options. I would also invite any other members of the user community to express their interest in joining me in forming a group to keep DX4WIN alive and as a legacy to its founder. Jim, AD1C, would definitely have to be one of the founding user group members. All if favor, say aye! I am sure that if we formed a user group, we would have many users who would want to volunteer their services to help with various aspects of distribution, user support and development of DX4WIN going forward. We would need volunteers to upgrade and support the website. Help with new user installations. Help with ongoing product development, etc. If Paul can provide us with a price, we can then determine the best way to raise the funds to buy him out. We could ask for donations. We could also continue to charge modest amounts for new installations and updates -- but only until the initial buyout amount has been paid off. Thereafter, we might explore a donation based model just to raise enough money to pay for ongoing administrative expenses -- if any. Again, our user group could be creative and flexible as we work together to evolve the product overtime. I do not think this would be that big an effort to organize as long as Paul thinks the time is right. Ultimately, it all depends on what Paul wants to do. Paul, in the interest of your many devoted users, is this something that we can begin to discuss with you? 73, Dave, N4QS n...@vci.net Cell: 270.210.9912 -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of sp...@pzk.pl Sent: Monday, November 20, 2023 9:58 AM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] FW: FW: QSL Manager editor not available. Pepe, Jim and the others who responded: Thanks for the easy way to search for QSOs without a grid. I used the ! character in the grid field of DX4WIN to search for QSOs on 6m without a grid. It turned out that of my 8,000+ Qs on 6m, the search revealed 200 without a grid. I looked them all up and found about 20 new grids that I did not know that I had worked. I also found 4 confirmed grids via QSL card that had not been marked with a grid. That put my VUCC totals for 6m at 940 worked and 895 confirmed. 45 cards are now in the mail to confirm the others that did not confirm via Lotw. [Dx4win] FW: Mode Locked in RTTY
To build on what John and Mike are saying, I use a key stroke recording app called Macro Recorder to enter each QSO into DX4WIN immediately after it is logged in WSJT-X. All I have to do is hit the Insert key. Macro Recorder then executes a little routine that emulates all of the mouse movements and clicks to import the WSJT-X log into DX4WIN. This is a nice workaround until Paul implements UDP broadcast functionality within DX4WIN. When Paul gets that done, QSOs will automatically get logged into DX4WIN like they do when using MMTTY on RTTY. Paul, we really need this. The whole world is going in this direction. Please help your user base keep pace. The one major drawback to Macro Recorder is that you have to pay for it. It costs around $50. There are some free keystroke mappers, but I could not get them to work. The ultimate and best solution is for Paul to implement UDP broadcast for his users. We need it 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of John, K9EL Sent: Wednesday, August 10, 2022 7:26 AM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Cc: gw3sfc Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Mode Locked in RTTY There are many of us who use the same solution as Mike described - periodically (could be after every QSO!) import the WSJT-X file. One way to make that easier is to create a shortcut to the WSJT-X ADIF file on your desktop. Once you navigate to the desktop the first time, the import window will open subsequently on your desktop. Just click the shortcut and your FT8/FT4 etc QSOs are imported with the proper mode designator. 73, John K9EL On Aug 10, 2022, at 6:19 AM, Mike Cizek W0VTT wrote: When you use any of the "sound card modes", the Elecraft radios have no way of knowing what mode you are using. This unlocks the RTTY designation, but you must now enter the mode manually for every QSO. 2. My solution is to just log any FT8 or MSK144 QSOs in WSJT-X and periodically import wsjtx_log.adi into dx4win: File > Import/Export > (select ADIF) > Import. [Dx4win] FW: Can we add Q65? Other suggestions...
Paul, Thanks for the help the other day. I have three suggestions for enhancements to DX4WIN on a new release: 1. Remove IOTA as a checked default when sending spots (Alt-A) 2. Implement UDP broadcast for QSOs between WSJT-X and DX4WIN (and other programs) 3. Add Q65 as a mode or sub-mode (plus any other new modes) A friend, AB4IQ, and I both happened to work WL7T/P from a rare grid (EL58) using Q65. Ed uses Log4OM for 6 meters. His confirmation via LOTW clearly shows the mode as Q65 while mine does not. The times, they are a changing. hi, hi UDP broadcast between apps is here to stay! For anyone following this thread, Jim just helped me find the problem: In Awards, VUCC tab, the Start date for Confirmation, LOTW was set for 01/01/2018!!! I don't know how that happened. For VUCC, my confirmed totals in DX4WIN are about 70 less that my totals showing on LOTW. (I have very few grids confirmed via QSL card.) When I open the VUCC window, it is also apparent that confirmations for CW and SSB are not showing as C. Under Reports, Awards, VUCC tab, I have all modes selected. The same thing happens when I run a VUCC report listing - confirmations for CW and SSB on 6 meters do not show up as confirmed. For example, for EM09 in Kansas, LOTW shows that grid was confirmed with AB0S. When I look up that QSO in DX4WIN, the Confirm LOTW box is set for Y - so it is marked as confirmed in DX4WIN. But in the VUCC window, EM09 only shows a W in the CW and SSB boxes-there should be a C in the CW box. If I double click on the 6 at the top, all of my QSOs with EM09 on 6 meters are shown, and AB0S clearly shows that it was confirmed via LOTW. Re: [Dx4win] Omitting IOTA info in spots
Alan, I can think of several reasons that I routinely want to delete IOTA data from the spot. First, I often do it when I get the red highlighted warning that the text of the spot is too long. Second, I often want to send a custom message in the text and need more space. Third, I am often in a hurry spotting a big run of G's, for example, but I don't see a big reason to include the IOTA for EU005. Same with most of the other common IOTAs. But yes, you are right in that I may want to occasionally include the IOTA for a rare station, but not very often. When I do, I would like to check the box, but 99% of the time the box should be unchecked. That why I believe that Kostas and David are correct in wanting the default setting for Control-A to be IOTA set for off. Makes no sense to have the default set to on. I wish Paul would change this, or at least let this be a user choice. But merely setting the default to off would be the simplest approach. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Alan Zack Sent: Tuesday, January 25, 2022 10:27 PM To: 'David Raymond' Cc: DX4WIN Group Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Omitting IOTA info in spots Just curious why would you want to delete the IOTA info? Re: [Dx4win] log type format
Another way is to create a group using a date filter. Go to Filter, Selection and then add a new group.. For example, you can have a group named 2006. When you create a group for 2006, then you can run reports and see just your totals for that year. After clicking Filter, Selection, hit F1 for a detailed help page on how to setup the group using the date filter. Re: [Dx4win] WSJT-X integration with DX4WIN
Here is a new trick that some of us may already be using. After suggesting to Paul that we needed full integration between WSJT-X and DX4WIN (like is done with MMTTY) for two or three years with no results, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I primarily needed some way to quickly execute the import routine whenever I want to import the adif log file from WSJT-X into DX4WIN. This is especially important during major openings on 6 meters. Just this past week I worked 56 South American stations during a big two hour opening, and I was constantly going through the long routine of importing the WSJT-X log into DX4WIN by hand. I have done this hundreds if not thousands of times over the past three years. I often want to import a 6M FT8 QSO quickly into DX4WIN so that I can then immediately send a spot using the Alt A routine. I also want to confirm if I worked the country and or station before and possible do a lookup via QRZ.COM. For the past few weeks, I have been playing with the idea of using some kind of a keystroke or mouse click recorder to record the long series of clicks that are required to import the WSJT-X log file into DX4WIN. I tried two free apps, AutoHotKey and AutoIt, with no success-they were too complicated and I am not a programmer. Yesterday, I stumbled upon an app called Macro Recorder, and I spent the almost $50 to download and try the standard edition. Link to Macro Recorder website: https://www.macrorecorder.com/ Within a few minutes, I successfully recorded a script, edited the script to fine tune it and deployed it on my main logging computer. Now, when I complete a QSO in WSJT-X, instead of clicking on the OK button as it pops up in the Log QSO window, I merely press one key - the Insert key. This immediately triggers a mouse click on the OK button to log the QSO in WSJT-X and then immediately executes the complete series of mouse buttons required to import the WSJT-X ADIF log file into DX4WIN. Presto! The new QSO logged in WSJT-X is immediately imported and entered into DX4WIN. Again, all I now have to do is press the Insert key and the new QSO is logged into WSJT-X and automatically imported into DX4WIN. The whole process takes about one second or two. Progress. The macro appears to work across my dual monitors with no problem, but it does require that you keep all of your open windows for WSJT-X and DX4WIN in the same position. I never move mine. I am not sure if the reflector will allow me to insert an image. I have made a copy of the script as it appears in Macro Recorder in case anyone is interested. If the image does not make it, just email directly and I will send it to you. I might add that when you minimize Macro Recorder, it remains open as a hidden icon. It is always there in the background waiting for me to hit the Insert key. You can assign the hotkey to be any key that you prefer. Someone else may be able to do the same thing with the free apps like AutoHotKey or AutoIt (and there are many others), but I found Macro Recorder to be much friendly and intuitive for a non-programmer like me. And someone may be able to improve and streamline my script. I am new to Macro Recorder and I may be missing a few tricks to make it perform even better. The ultimate and obviously more elegant solution would be for Paul to create a seamless interface between WSJT-X and DX4WIN just like he did for MMTTY many years ago. As we all know, virtually all logging programs today interface with WSjT-X. DX4WIN is one of the few that doesn't. In the meantime, this new macro recorded script is very handy and will help me tremendously during the coming 6 meter E season. Again, if you cannot see the image of the script below, please email me directly and I will sent it to you. Ironically, I would gladly pay $50 for Paul to release a new version of DX4WIN with WSJT-X fully integrated. This trick will at least get me through the summer. 73, Dave, N4QS __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Dx4win] Importing different FT8 logs
Hi Radi, 1. I can think of two ways to import into the correct group. First, you can change the default Group number in DX4WIN. Go to Preferences, QSO tab and then change the group number in the upper right corner. I think this will work. Be careful to change the default group number back to the correct number once you are finished with a given import. Second, the best and probably safest way is to download the ADIF to DX4WIN converter, a small app written by Jim, AD1C. When converting an adif file into DX4WIN Version 9 format, you have the option with his little app to insert a group number as selected on the input screen of the app. I use this feature all the time when importing QSOs from N1MM. 2. I cannot think of a way to easily change QSOs from Group 2 that were imported into Group 1. The only way that I can think of is to change the group number manually one QSO at a time. Not fun. The only other way is delete all QSOs for group 1 and recreate group 1 by importing the QSOs from other log source or sources if you have them--and designating the correct group number. I would do a backup before attempting to recreate a group. Be extra careful. I would highly recommend using Jim's ADIF to DX4WIN converter for assigning group numbers in the future. As you may know, there are a lot of advantages to using the group functions within DX4WIN. I keep the logs for all my DX-peditions within on master log -- separated by different group numbers. I also store QSOs from two different KY locations by different group numbers. By doing that, I can import LOTW confirmations for all of my callsigns with one file from the ARRL. I can also see all the QSOs with a given station from all of my expeditions when viewing the Same Call window. This is a very powerful and handy feature of DX4WIN. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Radivoj Kar, F6GNZ via DX4WIN Sent: Monday, April 5, 2021 6:33 AM To: DX4WIN Refelector Subject: [Dx4win] Importing different FT8 logs Hi, In my DX4WIN I have different Group numbers allocated for my Home and Portable operations. It appears that DX4WIN uses the QSO Begin time when all other logging programs, including N1MM, use the QSO End time. The Log4OM2 website states that in the UK amateur regulations require that the QSO end time be used. Here is how dupes are created: After making over 600 Qs in the ARRL VHF test over the weekend, I imported all 600 from N1MM into DX4WIN (using Jim's ADIF to DX4WIN Conversion app). All 600 showed up in DX4WIN and I then did an upload to LOTW. This morning I made a few more FT8 QSOs and imported the WSJT-X ADIF file directly into DX4WIN (which I have done hundreds of times). Much to my dismay, a bunch of dupes were created. I made about 120 digital QSOs in the VHF contest. During the contest, when a digital contact is made, WSJT-X broadcasts the QSO to N1MM and then save the contact in its own ADIF file. When the QSO is imported into N1MM, it used the QSO End time for each QSO's time. When I imported the WSJT-X ADIF file this morning, DX4WIN used the QSO Begin time when saving each QSO. By the way, I have always kept all of my previous digital QSOs in WSJT-X. I never delete them. So the QSOs that I made yesterday were imported into DX4WIN today, but most were ignored because they all showed the same QSO time. The QSO Begin and End times will often be in sync when a digital mode is completed quickly without any repeats. But we all know that it can sometimes take several minutes for a QSO to complete. There have been times when I finally get a RR73 from the other station that are 10 to 15 minutes after the original start time. I know that a few times yesterday due to QSB or QRM conditions on 6 meters. Two questions for the group: 1. Would Paul be willing to change the import map for ADIF files so that DX4WIN uses the QSO End time - which is the apparent standard? 2. If Paul is not willing to do that, is there a way for the user to change the import mapping - so that I can do that myself? I might add that these dupes due to time differences become an ongoing issue with LOTW. Now that I uploaded all of the 600 QSOs that I imported from N1MM (using the QSO end time), I will now have an issue with any QSOs that get imported into DX4WIN directly from WSJT-X - if the beginning and end time would vary significantly (more than a minute). So this will cause duplicate QSOs to be uploaded to LOTW - which I try to avoid. The other option is the manually edit the WSJT-X ADIF file to make the beginning and end times the same so that the next time that I import that file, it will not create duplicates. This also requires that I delete the duplicates that were already created in DX4WIN due to the time discrepancy. The best solution would be the change the import mapping in DX4WIN so that it uses the QSO End time. Can anyone help me with that? In the meantime, I have to spend this afternoon finding all the dupes that were created this morning! Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Digest, Vol 193, Issue 1
Hi Bill, Yes, I often find differences in the grid square. I typically use the grid as reported by the Lotw download, since I assume that the other op chose the correct Station Location when he uploaded to Lotw. There can also be differences in states and zones. I believe some logging programs give you the option to automatically update your log data to correspond to what was reported via Lotw. While every solution has pros and cons, an automatic log sync with Lotw data would be a nice option for those of us who make a lot of contacts. Given that TQSL has recently added more checking of correct Station Locations, it should make the Lotw data even more accurate. Thus, I would use an auto sync function with Lotw if available in DX4WIN. I make too many contacts to go in and look them up manually all the time. The other option is to just ignore the differences. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of William Osborne Sent: Thursday, May 7, 2020 12:08 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Digest, Vol 193, Issue 1 Hi Folks, I wonder if the lotwreport.notfound works. The man and his family have to eat too. Or how about this, would you be willing to pay an annual fee for upgrades to DX4WIN ? Other loggers with robust features demand this. I too am a very long time user of DX4WIN. I don't recall the year I started using it but it seems like the early 90s. As I recall, Paul said long ago that he was freezing any further development of DX4WIN. That lasted for a long time. When we went from vers 8 to vers 9, I considered that a gift. I can't even recall if we paid to get the new version, if we did it was something like $35. For someone to whine and complain that they want their money's worth, I mean come on. I'm sure you'd throw $35 over the bar in one evening or spend that for a mediocre lunch. The other thing to consider is that perhaps Paul does not have time to devote to DX4WIN. Maybe, he has just lost interest. Here's a thought, write to Paul direct in stead of the user group. We're not the ones that will be doing any develop of DX4WIN. 73 Jerry, N9AW On Thu, Apr 16, 2020 at 10:38 AM Paul F6EXV wrote: > rue Bruce, the search is just great with DX4Win. > But the program is not being adapted to the changes in our ham world... > FT8, LoTW, Clublog... > Is it that hard to implement these improvements ? > All other programs do that, why can't Clublog do it too ? Re: [Dx4win] Very Satisfied with DX4WIN
There is no reason why we all have to be resigned to the fact that DX4WIN must be frozen in time and there will never be any more enhancements. Paul, after a seven year hiatus, recently added FT4 and FT8 as new modes and provided support for QRZ.COM XML integration, along with some other nice features like automatic updates. For those of us you are weak signal DX enthusiasts, we would like to see UDP Broadcast support so that we can automatically import digital contacts from WSJT-X. This is a major feature that is now supported by almost all other logging programs. DX4WIN has for years provided a very nice, seamless integration between MMTTY and DX4WIN. Providing the same for WSJT-X is all that we are asking. It is a major feature that is vitally needed, especially as the summer E season approaches on 6 meters. Last summer there were several openings on 6m from the Midwest in NA into Europe where my entire screen in WSJT-X was lit up in red. I needed to know in real time which stations were new countries for me on 6M (any mode), but I had to hand type each call into the QSO window of DX4WIN. This was very hectic and awkward when so many were calling at once. I basically had to ignore DX4WIN and work the pile up in WSJT-X. After the dust settled, I then imported the ADI file from WSJT-X into DX4WIN to find out if I had worked any new ones. I have recently tested another logging program that handles this integration between WSJT-X and the logger very nicely. The two programs talk to each other exchanging data via UDP broadcast. A window from the general logger displays the calls from WSJT-X and tells you which ones are new for DXCC. If you click on a call in WSJT-X to begin calling that station, the callsign is immediately put into the Callsign field of the general logger. A QRZ.COM XML lookup takes place from the logger and the station's info is displayed so that you can again confirm callsign, locations, grid, etc.--all while the contact in WSJT-X is taking place. Then when the contact is over and added to the log in WSJT-X, it is also immediately added in the logging program. You can immediately send a spot if desired. All of this happens very fast and seamlessly between the two programs -- very similar to how MMTTY is currently integrated into DX4WIN. Some may ask why I just don't go with the other logging program if I like it so much. I actually prefer many other features within DX4WIN mainly because it can easily accommodate my 187,000+ contacts without getting too slow and because it also provides group support for my DX-pedition calls. And yes, the country and awards databases maintained by Jim, AD1C, are the best. Thank you Jim. But the one glaring weakness in DX4WIN, based on the current standard among virtually all actively supported logging programs, is the lack of UDP broadcast support for communicating with other programs like WSJT-X and FlDigi. I might add that the other popular loggers also offer the option to automatically upload to many services such as Lotw, Clublog, QRZ.com and others. This summer, as 6 meters heats up, it would be nice to have the option to turn on automatic updates to Clublog so that each contact is immediately uploaded to Clublog. That way DX stations on the other end can use the link on my QRZ.com page to see if they made it into may log. I have used this feature in Belize and Grand Cayman using N1MM+ and it worked very well. All the other loggers provide the option to turn UDP broadcast support on or off and the same goes for automatic updates to Lotw or Clublog. So, for those users of DX4WIN who do not have any interest in these features, Paul should allow them to simply not turn them on. In short, UDP broadcast support is a current standard within the hobby that needs to be incorporated into DX4WIN. I hope that we can use this forum to continue to discuss new enhancements as our fascinating hobby continues to evolve. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of WA7AA Sent: Thursday, April 16, 2020 11:25 AM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Very Satisfied with DX4WIN On 16-Apr-20 08:02, Michael Mathis wrote: > I am very satisfied with DX4WIN: User since 1999, never posted to group - silent majority? Paul, Try LogHX3. It can be setup to look and operate like DX4WIN, but has all the additional features that we have been asking for. In just one week, I have it up and running with 167,000 QSOs imported from DX4WIN. Alexei, RX4HX, appears to be very actively supporting it with frequent updates. I will continue to use DX4WIN for storing past dxpeditions, and I have been a long supporter of DX4WIN. But I will likely move to LogHx for everyday logging from my main station. I love the way it integrates with WSJT-X, MMTTY, FLDigi and other programs. It fully supports UDP broadcasts. It will automatically upload QSOs to Clublog, QRZ.COM and other websites. These are all features that I need to have especially as I get ready for the summer Es season on 6 meters. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Paul F6EXV Sent: Saturday, April 4, 2020 4:48 AM To: DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] Development Hi all Can we know if the developers' team is working on major improvement, especially on interaction with Clublog and LoTW ? Re: [Dx4win] Ideas for development
This is my last post and I will move on. Yes, I know about the "Imported QSO is ignored" feature when importing and I use it all the time. But even when you select that (it's the default), you can still have situations in which duplicates are imported. The point is there are all sorts of ways to get duplicates into the log and you have no way to identify them. I was just trying to agree with Paul that it would be a nice feature to have a function or utility within DX4WIN that would help us identify potential dupes. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of David Kozinn, K2DBK Sent: Wednesday, November 27, 2019 2:16 PM To: 'Paul GRANGER' ; 'Dan Violette' ; 'REFLECTOR dx4win' Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Ideas for development I'm trying to understand the issue. I don't understand why that would be a problem. Like many of us, this happens all the time. If you're talking about preventing a truly duplicate QSO from being imported (same band, mode, and time), that's what the "Imported QSO is ignored" setting is for on the Options for duplicate QSOs dialog when importing. Re: [Dx4win] Ideas for development
Paul, I agree and dupes can appear in the log for many reasons. Here are a couple: 1. When an FT8 QSO does not complete the first time, you often need to send the 73 message a second or third time and this can cause the QSO to be logged two or three times if you are not paying attention. Currently, I try to use ADIF Master to go into the wsjt-x log to find and delete the dupes. But I sometimes miss a dupe and it ends up in DX4WIN and often gets uploaded to LOTW as well. 2. For those of us who attempt to use other logging programs that interface directly with WSJT-X such as Log4om and DXLabs. If I have already imported FT8 QSOs using the wsjt-x log and then attempt to do so from the other logging program at a later date, dupes are often created due to the QSO time differences between wsjt-x and the other logging program. I know that you can set the Time window to match QSO in secs (other logs) when importing (See preferences, import tab), but this can still get tricky if the other log program tracks both beginning and ending time for the QSO. It would be nice if we could run a utility in DX4WIN to identify and eliminate dupes. With 170,000 QSOs in my log, it is difficult to track them down on my own. You idea is a good one. I also like suggestions #2 and #3. Re: [Dx4win] 51st state
This has happened to me several times. You have made a contact with a station in DC. As I recall, you can fix this by doing a search (F8), putting DC in the state field, and then hitting enter. That should bring up any stations that sent DC during a contest. Click on each QSO and clear the state field since DC is not a state. Hit enter to save the change. That should get you back to 50 states. This normally happens when importing a contest file into DX4WIN. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Kirk-N0KK Sent: Saturday, October 26, 2019 8:28 AM To: DX4WIN Reflector Subject: [Dx4win] 51st state While checking on WAS band/mode progress I saw that on some bands Ive got 51 states confirmed. Re: [Dx4win] Fwd: WSJT to DX4WIN
Hi Ray, Glad to hear that the first import worked for you. In the future when you add more QSOs in WSJT-X, you just import the entire logfile the same way into DX4WIN. As mentioned below, the default selection when handling dupes is that any duplicated QSOs from prior imports will be ignored. So you can keep importing the entire log file, and DX4WIN will ignore the prior QSOs and only add the new QSOs. You do not have to apply a date filter. Keep importing the entire logfile from WSJT-X. Just make sure when you get to the window that asks how to handle dupes, you just accept the default which is “the prior duplicate QSO will be ignored.” This is a very slick feature. But we still need the UDP broadcast support so that each new QSO is automatically imported into DX4WIN. Then we will not have to repeat this manual import process over and over…. 73, Dave, N4QS From: Raymundo Rodriguez Sent: Tuesday, October 15, 2019 7:10 PM To: n...@vci.net Cc: dx4win list Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Fwd: WSJT to DX4WIN Hello dave, just to tell you that I thank you very much for your advice on WSJTX and tell you that I already managed to do it, although there were only 225 QSOs, now I need to know how you separate in the WSJTX log what you already passed to DX4WIN with the new thing you have to update. Re: [Dx4win] Fwd: WSJT to DX4WIN
Hi Shelby, I am sorry to hear about your brother-in-law. Yes, I have literally imported thousands of times from WSJT-X into DX4WIN from two different computers. I know the drill, but it still is not easy to explain to a newbie. More importantly, we need UDP Broadcast so that QSOs are imported immediately. As I keep mentioning, when you are being called by twenty EU stations during an opening on 6M, you really do not have time to stop and import. But there are reasons I want to see the QSO in DX4WIN—to see if the QSO is a new country, send a Spot, verify a callsign using the QRZ.COM XML interface, etc. FT4 is even faster and all the more reason for real-time updates to DX4WIN. As you can tell, I would very much like Paul to respond to this request. These new digital modes are fast and would match nicely with the built in speed of DX4WIN – but we need UDP broadcast support to make that happen. 73, Dave, N4QS From: ShelbyK4WW Sent: Tuesday, October 15, 2019 4:31 PM To: N4QS Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Fwd: WSJT to DX4WIN "So now all you can do is manually import the logfile from WSJT-X into DX4WIN. [Dx4win] Feature request -- UDP support
I would like to request that Paul add UDP broadcast and import support within DX4WIN so that we can interface WSJT-X to DX4WIN like it now can be done with N1MM+. I operated the ARRL VHF contest this weekend and had N1MM and WSJT-X working together. Every time I made a FT8 contact in WSJT-X, the contact was automatically added in N1MM. This allowed me to keep track of dupes and scoring in real time. Everything worked very seamlessly. Both programs actually exchanged information back and forth via the UDP broadcasts. We need the same capability in DX4WIN. I have made over 7,500 FT8 and FT4 contacts over the past two summers. Both modes are becoming increasingly critical for weak signal DXing on 160 meters and 6 meters especially. Although I have added to my DXCC band totals using FT8 on several of the other bands as well. It is not very handy to have to manually import the adi logfile from WSJT-X into DX4WIN. There are times in the heat of the moment that you need the contacts added to DX4WIN but you do not have time to stop and do the import. This happened to me this summer in the middle of a major opening into EU on 6 meters when I had a screen full of G stations calling me. Adding the WSJT-X contacts automatically and in real time helps be to verify call signs, ensure the QSOs are valid and quickly report spots on the cluster. It also helps me to see when I have worked a new country and to look up more info about a station via the QRZ.COM XML interface. Paul, is there any reason that you do not think it is a good idea to support the importing of QSOs via UDP broadcasts? I wonder what other users think. Any comments? So many other programs support UDP, I am wondering if there is some technical reason that DX4WIN cannot support it? 73, Dave, N4QS __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Dx4win] FW: DX4WIN World Map
Yes, I like the map too! And I was able to find PEI on the map. I first did an F8 search, clicked on the IOTA field, did an F1 search, found Prince Edward Island, and selected it. My logbook then displayed all my contacts with PEI. When I doubled clicked on one of them, PEI was highlighted in yellow on the map. You may need to zoom in to see it. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of radiode...@gmail.com Sent: Wednesday, September 11, 2019 10:10 AM To: 'vk3io' ; DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN World Map @Ron, Even so, it's the BEST ham radio map I have ever used, all the other logging program maps are Mercator projections which are kind of mind bending if you're trying to figure a beam direction quickly by sight... I have recently updated to the latest version of DX4WIN, being version 9.0.4.1176. Very recently I came to the realization that the world map in DX4WIN, in my view, is seriously deficient. For that matter, I don't think it has ever been updated, well not since the early versions of DX4WIN, like the Version 5 I first owned and used. I like it's functionality, with all it's features and projection options and it is easy to use. I have it on my LCD screen always and visitors to my radio room are certainly impressed with this visual aid. But, after all these years, it seems it has never been updated, that is, it does not even show the Canadian districts. I could not even locate Prince Edward Island. Am I incorrect in saying this is a USA DX Logging program, as it only shows USA states in detail and does not show much in the way of any other country details, not even for your very dear, nearest country neighbor, being Canada, or have I missed something, like a World Map update, since using this program for 20 years or more. There is much more of the world and DX logging than just USA states. I hope there is an updated map somewhere and that someone can advise me of how to solve this problem, such as maybe to delete this DX4WIN word map screen and find a better map or a even regrettably a better logging program. Re: [Dx4win] Version 9.05 available
Dick, There are a couple ways that I adjust the frequency range to keep the red arrow visible. First, you can click on the checkmark on the bottom. That re-centers the bandmap and makes the whole band visible. You can also hit the plus or minus signs at the bottom until you see the red arrow again. But if you tune the radio off the top or bottom of the scale, my version will automatically move the scale up or down to follow the red arrow. Re: [Dx4win] WAS Oddity
John, This has happened to me before. As I recall, you should try doing a search of your log for "DC" in the state field. In some contests, those living in DC can send that as their exchange, and that gets imported into the state field incorrectly. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of John Holmes Sent: Friday, December 28, 2018 2:54 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] WAS Oddity I was looking at my WAS stats for 2018 and the report indicated I had worked FIFTY ONE states. Re: [Dx4win] Help With Importing WSJT .adi
I run WSJT-X on two different computers within my station. Both PCs are networked. To make it easy to find the log files, I have mapped network drives to each wsjt-x folder on the separate computers. When I go to import either one of the files from within DX4WIN, I go to File, Import, ADIF, and then select This PC. Under Network locations, both WSJT-X folders (on two different PCs) are displayed. Clicking on one or the other displays the wsjt-x_log.adi file that I need for importing into DX4WIN. This approach makes it very easy to find the right file on either computer. It would also work with only one computer. Just map a drive to the file location that Jim described below. Re: [Dx4win] Import of ADIF "Comment" field - answered
Paul, This used to bother me. I solved the problem by unchecking the "db reports to comments" box under the Reporting tab in Settings within WSJT-X. By doing that, nothing is saved to the comments field in the ADIF file and thus nothing gets imported into the Call Sign Notes field in DX4WIN. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Paul Ferguson Sent: Monday, July 02, 2018 8:56 PM To: Dx4win Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Import of ADIF "Comment" field - answered Len (K1NU) noted that when a WSJT log is imported into DX4WIN, DX4WIN puts the contents of the field of the WSJT log into the DX4WIN "Callsign Notes" field. What is in the WSJT field is usually the mode and signal reports such as "FT8 Sent: +01 Rcvd: +00". This is clearly QSO-related and not Callsign-related information. When I look at an ADIF specification, it says the field is a Comment field for the QSO (not for the Callsign). I do not know why WSJT decided to put the mode and signal reports in the field because other fields already contain the mode and signal reports. DX4win imports these mode and signal report fields into the proper parts of the DX4WIN log. The problem with importing the field into the DX4WIN Callsign Notes is when you work a station multiple times. With each repeat QSO, QSO-related info is appended to what is already in Callsign Notes. With many QSOs, Callsign Notes gets pretty mucked-up with info that does not belong there. I would like to see DX4WIN make a change so that WSJT field is put into DX4WIN Callsign Notes. 73, Paul K5ESW > Never mind... I found my own answer. [Dx4win] 51 States
My log with over 138,000 Qs is now showing 51 states when I run the WAS summary or listing reports. The listing report shows a line after WY at the very bottom of the report. There are a bunch of weird characters in the St field and the State name field on this last row. Then there are Cs in the boxes for Mix, Pho, CW, Dig, 80 and 40. When I try to click on one of the Cs, there is an error message that says "No Matching QSO Found". Once I click OK to remove the error message, I get a blank QSO window except for the State field which is filled in with the letters SL. The S is red and the L is black. If I try to hit F2 and do a search for SL in the State field, I get nothing. It is apparent that there is a corrupted QSO in the database, but the question is how do I find it and delete it? Re: [Dx4win] Not saving updates from QRZ
Jim and John, I just replicated the problem here as well. I am a QRZ subscriber, so normally when making a QSO I hit Update QSO in the Callsign/Mgr lookup. But I have found it does not update with new data unless the field in the logging window is blank. For example, if I have already worked the station and from a previous contact have a four digit grid entered, the update will not change that entry -- even though QRZ is showing the entire six digit grid. I have to delete the prior value and then click on Update QSO. The new six digit value is then entered into the empty grid field. Same goes for name, city, county -- any of the other fields. So when it comes to county, I just found a prior QSO that did not have a county filled in. I attempted to Update QSO from the Callsign/Mgr lookup window. The county shows up in the log entry window and then I save. But when I reopen that QSO, the new county info is not there. Like Jim said, I have to do it two or three times. I noticed that the original blank county field had two dashes (--). My theory is that the program sees those two dashes and assumes that the county field has data in it, and then does not update the new data. You have to click in that field to get it to delete the -- and then it appears that the new data will fill and then be saved. Not exactly sure about this behavior, but it appears to be consistent with how the other fields get updated. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jim Reisert AD1C Sent: Saturday, February 24, 2018 9:49 AM To: j...@w9rpm.com Cc: DX4WIN <dx4win@mailman.qth.net> Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Not saving updates from QRZ The third time (once the state had been saved), I was able to change the county and save the QSO (using ENTER) On Sat, Feb 24, 2018 at 8:48 AM, Jim Reisert AD1C <jjreis...@alum.mit.edu> wrote: > I tried again to change the state and county. Re: [Dx4win] Logging FT8 qsos in V9
Ed, Here are my answers to your questions: 1. You can enter by hand. Version 9 supports db signal reports. Just enter -01 for example instead of 599. 2. Yes, you should log FT8 QSOs using the db format for signal reports. That is the accepted norm. Even LOTW supports that format. 3. Yes, I just import the wsjt-x log file directly into DX4WIN-- just like N1MM+. DX4WIN will add the db formatted signal reports (if you are using Version 9). No, I never clear the log file in WSJT-X. When you import the log into DX4WIN the default option is to ignore all duplicates. So any previous contacts are ignored by DX4WIN and only any new ones are added on each successive import. 4. DX4WIN does not currently interface with JTAlert. I wish it did! Alternatively, WSJT-X supports UDP broadcast of logged contacts. Some other logging programs use this feature to automatically pull in new contacts from WSJT-X. I wish DX4WIN would do that. 5. Not sure about Jim's script and XP. You will have to ask him. I hope this helps. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Ed Stratton Sent: Saturday, February 24, 2018 9:09 AM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] Logging FT8 qsos in V9 ok, newbie to FT8. Made my first FT8 Qso last night, I think (lol) WSJT has the CAT control of my FTdx5000, so when I bring up DX4win, I get the com error, and just close it a move on, so that DX4Win comes up and runs normally without CAT radio control. Not sure if this ok or not, but seems no harm no foul. My PC is running XP, DX4Win v9, and WSJT. A few questions: 1), I just did an 'off line' QSO addition to the log file in DX4Win. Is that how it is done, manually every time? Since you can't 'grab' the WSJT QSO information with a click to import into DX4Win. 2). I just logged this qso as FT8, with 599s each way. Did not log the db received information that WSJT provided, I assume that 599 is not the way to report the FT8 levels. 3.) Do you just log all FT8 QSOs in WSJT, and then Export / Import the WSJT adi file into DX4Win? (just like you would do for N1MM+ etc) a.) If yes what does the RST send and received look like in DX4Win for this import? Is there a SCREEN shot I could reference somewhere to visually look at? b.) Is yes, after the import into DX4Win, do you go back into WSJT and clear the .adi log, so that next export / import you don't get a duplicate message in DX4Win? 4.) I have been reading about JTalert, this program seems to have the ability to provide a logging 'channel' between WSJT and some other logging programs. Does or will DX4Win have this capability? Is so is there documentation available for setup? 5.) Lastly I did see Jim's W10 script for moving qso automatically from WSJT into DXWin, would that work on XP platform? Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win - Elecraft K3 - Remote Rig
John, In my case, I am using RemoteRig boxes at both the remote and control sites. I have a Static IP at the remote site and I forward two or three ports that the two boxes use to communicate. I am not sure if I prioritized the port connections in the routers at each end. Will have to check. No, I do not have Wifi cameras and other equipment actively engaged at either end. No Wifi mouses/keyboard. (I use Bluetooth.) Not sure what you mean by backhaul distance. The remote site is about 10 miles from my home (control site). Latency is normally not an issue. I regularly operate major contests with full control of the remote K3 and all accessories. Audio streaming is normally excellent. Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win - Elecraft K3 - Remote Rig
John and Kostas, I also have a K3/0 mini and I am glad to hear this problem happens to other users. (No, not really!) My case is a little different. I never have a problem with DX4WIN at the control site losing connection to the K3 at the remote site. Stays connected -- rock solid for hours on end. I think I set the poll rate at only 2000 ms and set max tries to 3. My problem is with N1MM+. It loses connection quite frequently -- about once or twice an hour on a good day. That will typically throw me out of run mode and I must right click on the band map to Reset Radios. I figured that N1MM+ is somehow polling the radio differently than DX4WIN. There is a setting to slow the polling 50% and 100% versus normal, but the same thing happens on all three settings. N1MM+ does not have a way to increase Max Tries -- so that may be the problem. I have recently sent my issue to the N1MM+ reflector with no response. Another ham in our local contest club mentioned that he once had the same issue and his problem ended up being RF getting into the computer cables. He cured it by adding toroid filters to the cables. Since DX4WIN works fine, I am not sure that is the answer to my problem. But it could be yours -- think about if there is any chance RF is getting into the pc. Let me know what you find out. 73, Dave, N4QS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Kostas SV1DPI Sent: Monday, February 19, 2018 11:35 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win - Elecraft K3 - Remote Rig I use a Kenwood 480 with remoterig and happens to me also. Re: [Dx4win] How to change mapping for FT8
Hi Mike, Problem solved Yes, I am importing the adif file from WSJT-X directly into DX4WIN using the ADIF import filter. Works great. Mode is correct. Signal reports now are correct. The only problem is the Comments field from WSJT-X goes into the Notes for this Call field. For example, after an import I will typically see the following in the Notes for this Call field: FT8 Sent: -08 Rcvd: -02 But I just solved the problem by simply unchecking the "db reports to comments" option under the reporting tab of settings in WSJT-X. This used to be an important way to store mode and signal report data when the prior versions of DX4WIN did not accept FT8 as a mode. But now there is no need to retain this info since it is being imported properly into DX4WIN. By turning that option off, nothing goes in the Comments field in WSJT-X and thus nothing gets imported into the Notes for this Call field in DX4WIN. Simple workaround. Sorry for the wasted bandwidth. Hi, hi Now back to working DX... Hi Mike. I would like DX4WIN to be able to map the Remarks field to the Notes for this QSO field without any manual manipulation of the ADIF file. It would make importing of WSJT-X files a snap. I thought DX4WIN has a way to remap imports.
