Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?

2014-02-22 Thread Walter Underwood
Well-protected is not quite the same thing as continuous service or maximum
linearity. The KX3 is fine at 10-12W for CW or SSB, but people generally run it
at 3-5W for FM or digital modes.

Of course, when you need the juice, you need it, regardless of mode.

Elecraft output stages are very well protected. In general, I feel
comfortable running them balls to the wall with keydown modes, with all the
lights lit. With well matched antennas, I run keydown modes at full power. If
the output stage gets warm, the fan will run faster, and if that isn't
enough, the rig will back off the drive.

Remember that the WSJT modes are weak signal modes, NOT low power modes.
There is a big difference. We may get lots of distance per watt and be happy
with QRP for easy paths, but for the most difficult paths (EME,
transcontinental 160M), great digital ops pile on the watts and use their
best antennas. I do a lot of QRP, but I also know when to turn on the big
 amp. :)

[Elecraft] Multiband end-fed dipole with KX1

Are you familiar with any end-fed design that will handle all three

On 2/21/2014 7:43 PM, WA7SPY wrote:

In the K3, the limiting factor in some digital modes (notably PSK) is
not thermal capability of the radio or amplifier, it is linearity. The
linearity limit depends on the particular digital mode in use, and it
may also vary depending on the mode used in the radio. For PSK31 and its
higher-speed brethren, using the radio's DATA A mode, power settings no
higher than half the maximum power rating of the transmitter should be
used. This will ensure that the maximum instantaneous peaks of the
transmitted signal are not clipped (in PSK these peaks can be up to
twice as high as the average transmitted power). I can't speak from
personal experience for the KX3, but given the similarity in the way the
transmitter power is controlled, I would expect it to be the same as the
K3. Using the KXPA100, keeping the power setting below 50 watts should
avoid non-linearity.

Paul,
I run an EARCHI Matchbox with 44 feet of wire. It is resonant on 20m (no
tuner) and the SWR is below 3.5:1 for the frequencies between 7 MHz and 25 MHz
so you can tune 40-12m. I have no problem tuning it with my KX3 ATU. I am not
sure the KX1 ATU will handle it but I am thinking it does. The EARCHI matchbox
is good up to 100 watts - so it is both versatile and robust. I have gone to
this antenna instead of the PAR 40-20-10. It also tunes 30m and has been my go
to antenna for 30m for a long time at my QTH. It cost $35 to build with a kit
from EARCHI and takes about 10 minutes.

Paul,

I also use these for portable work, you may need to carry a couple of
antennas, or make up some half wave length wires for bands other than 10/20/40.
On their QRP antenna you remove the tri-band wire and put on the wire of your
choice, to work other bands.
Won't go to 80 metres though...

2014-02-22 Thread WILLIS COOKE
I would recommend the Amp first for two reasons.  One, you need the power.  10
watts is enough to make a lot of contacts, but it will leave you disappointed a
lot of times when you will want to make the contact. A lot has been said for
QRP and if you want a challenge it will certainly give you one, but you will
find that people will avoid rag chews because they can' get solid copy and you
will miss many contacts because the other party can't copy you.  The second
reason is that the amplifier is deeper into the K3 than the tuner and the
assembly is easier with the amp first.  The tuner is located at the corner of a
K3 and is easy to add later.

But both are great additions, particularly if you are not using an external
high power amp and if you can afford the expense I recommend both of them as
soon as possible.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?

2014-02-22 Thread WILLIS COOKE
I don't think that Elecraft recommends any particular power.  The amplifier
will put out full power with acceptable distortion, but the lower quality
receivers of others will easily overload and if you use more than a few watts
it will prevent the use of the pass band by your neighbors and you will not be
popular with them.  They will tell you as they all want to be in the same SSB
pass band so that they can see everybody at one time.  Elecraft can't do
anything about the quality of their competitors receivers.

[Elecraft] KAT-500 behavior under firmware 1.58

2014-02-22 Thread DeYoung James
Greetings,

Here is a little feedback on the new KAT-500 firmware.  I installed version
1.58 last night and was using my 160m capacitance hat vertical antenna and
observed what I think is strange behavior.  First, I admit my 160m cap. hat
vertical is not an optimal antenna.  Previous versions of the firmware however,
produced acceptable matches.  Version 1.54 was a little better by introducing
the finer step search.  The version 1.58 firmware however produces worse
results in my case.

The tuning passes, the clickity-clack search, is clearly different on 160m.
The KAT-500 now finds no good match in auto mode.  I place the KAT-500 in
manual mode and using the utility software set previously used capacitance
and inductance values.  Now the KAT-500 goes sometimes into bypass mode (I have
no KPA-500), drops setting values with an audible click, and some times when I
checked the utility it has gone far away in capacitance and inductance values
without a clickty-clack tuning cycle.  My K3 used to be able to produce
nearly full power with its super ALC method of power control.  According to my
Palstar PM2000A power meter, not so much anymore, as it behaves now like
traditional power fold back on 160m.  It appears something is interacting.

I have no evidence of RF in the shack.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 revs 4.83/1.38/1.58

2014-02-22 Thread Cady, Fred
Here is how to make it fail:
Disconnect the power completely from the KAT500 (maybe the micro in it stays on
when it is powered off).
Turn off the K3 with its power switch with the KPA turned on.
Turn on the K3 with the KPA500 on.
I get either a blank K3 LCD display or it is hung up.

To recover:
Turn the power supply to the k3 off.
Plug in the power cable to the KAT500 (I use the same supply as the K3 with a
Rig runner that powers everything up at once when the K3 turns on).
Turn the K3 and KAT500 power supply on.
Hit the Power On button on the K3.

YMMV.

Good Day Paul,

My first rig was a KX1 and I ran an end-fed wire (34' as I recall) with
three counterpoises. It worked on 20, 30, and 40 quite well. It wouldn't
load on 80, but I made QSOs with it anyway. A year or so later I bought a
KX3 and ran the same antenna with good results. Then about 6 months ago, I
bought the EARCHI EFHW. I'm using the suggested setup--30' wire to the
matchbox with 25' of coax. The KX3 loves it and it loads 6 though 80 FB--160
not so well. The only drawback is the counterpoise.

Just for grins I took out the trusty KX1 and tried it on the EARCHI, The AT
didn't like it. SWL was 2.0 where with it was 1.0--1.3 consistently with
the simple wire-counterpoise setup. So, maybe I need to lengthen the wire
as another poster noted.

Just FYI see http://www.sotabeams.co.uk/efhw/ for a discussion of EFHW.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT-500 behavior under firmware 1.58

2014-02-22 Thread Sam Morgan

I have had just the opposite results with v 1.58

My amp is an AL-811, I run it at about 300-400w on 160m
My 160m antenna is a 7' tall HiQ screwdriver antenna (also with a top
hat) @ 20' with 16 radials each 13' long on my apartment roof.

With no tuner my SWR on 160m ranges from 2.0:1 to 4.5:1

With v1.54 I was unable to run the KAT500 in Auto
it would tune just fine and then while talking
it would randomly fold back and start a search
for an elusive low swr point

With v1.58 I am able to find a stable resonant point
yes at first there was a major 'clackity-clack' search,
which resulted in a point 'close' to resonant.

But if I immediately taped the [TUNE] button again,
there is a much quieter, shorter search,
that resulted in a stable tuning point in AUTO.

I can then enjoy my 2 hr morning ragchew with out any retuning.

The next morning when I tune up there may be a brief quiet retune, but
that is caused by the different overnight moisture changes on the roof.

Once that initial retune takes place it's once again stable.

Greetings, Here is a little feedback on the new KAT-500 firmware.
I installed version 1.58 last night and was using my 160m capacitance
hat vertical antenna and observed what I think is strange behavior.
First, I admit my 160m cap. hat vertical is not an optimal antenna.
Previous versions of the firmware however, produced acceptable
matches. Version 1.54 was a little better by introducing the finer
step search. The version 1.58 firmware however produces worse
results in my case.

The tuning passes, the clickity-clack search, is clearly different on
160m. The KAT-500 now finds no good match in auto mode. I place the
KAT-500 in manual mode and using the utility software set
previously used capacitance and inductance values. Now the KAT-500
goes sometimes into bypass mode (I have no KPA-500), drops setting
values with an audible click, and some times when I checked the
utility it has gone far away in capacitance and inductance values
without a clickty-clack tuning cycle. My K3 used to be able to
produce nearly full power with its super ALC method of power control.
According to my Palstar PM2000A power meter, not so much anymore, as
it behaves now like traditional power fold back on 160m. It appears
something is interacting.

I have no evidence of RF in the shack. Jim, N8OQ

Re: [Elecraft] Multiband end-fed dipole with KX1

2014-02-22 Thread Brian Hunt
I have a home brew 40/30/20 end fed half wave vertical I've used for several
years with my K1. 33 ft long and supported with a MFJ fiberglass pole, it has a
loading coil 6 ft from each end. 20 m with the coil shorted, 30 m with a tap
selected and 40 m with the entire coil in the circuit. You have to haul the
antenna down to change bands but that's easy with the MFJ pole.

The tuner is a tuned tank with a 6 turn link tapped on every turn. The coil and
link are wound on a 1 in. toroid. It will tune the antenna to 1:1 SWR on all 3
bands. It will handle about 15 watts before it starts to arc. :-)

I can put together the details if interested.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?

2014-02-22 Thread Lynn W. Taylor, WB6UUT

For PSK-31, you really want to run the minimal amount of power necessary.

Remember that the entire PSK-31 subband fits in your receiver filters --
you don't tune the VFO at all.

If you transmit a strong signal, and propagation is good, I'll be able
to work you, but when my receiver AGC cuts in all the rest of the PSK-31
stations on the band will go away.

If I happened to be working one of those other stations, my QSO is over.

As a rule of thumb, you don't want to exceed half the output power,
unless the amp is rated for 100% key down. Monitor the temperature.

50 watts is a lot of power on PSK-31.

[Elecraft] (no subject)

2014-02-22 Thread Edward R Cole

Good points:

JT-65 is 100% duty cycle unlike CW or SSB that are much lower duty
cycle. The issue is dissipation power in your finals. I run JT-65
with 1300w and theoretically the 8877 can dissipate 1500w so I am
fine (the caveat is the 8877 needs very good air cooling). With no
air the 8877 quickly fails with only filament voltage applied (5v-11a).

QRP on 2m eme is generally considered anything under 600w or less
than two yagis. That is a very weak signal when transmitted
half-million miles roundtrip to the Moon. I have made JT-65 eme
contacts using four 10-element yagis and only 150w...definitely QRP.

Likewise, I can run 20m psk at 12w out of the native K3/10 into a
triband yagi with good results. But the dissipation area in the KX3
is so small I would lower this to 3w. The Elecraft radios will
quickly tell you if you are exceeding their abilities!

On the other hand I over-built my 300w PA by adding a fan to it can
be run to the wall at max power.

Elecraft output stages are very well protected. In general, I feel
comfortable running them balls to the wall with keydown modes, with
all the lights lit. With well matched antennas, I run keydown modes at
full power. If the output stage gets warm, the fan will run faster, and
if that isn't enough, the rig will back off the drive.

Remember that the WSJT modes are weak signal modes, NOT low power
modes. There is a big difference. We may get lots of distance per watt
and be happy with QRP for easy paths, but for the most difficult paths
(EME, transcontinental 160M), great digital ops pile on the watts and
use their best antennas. I do a lot of QRP, but I also know when to turn
on the big amp. :)

The specs for the W2 only go down as far as the bottom of the 160m band.

From the schematic it would appear that the only thing on the Low Power

Will the unit work down on 630m with out loss of accuracy?

I have MINIMUM of S10 to sometimes S30 noise level - and any time I do get
some type of voice it is all pretty garbled. Checked mode, LSB/USB - all

WWV on 5 I could hear what I think was local AM station a bit clearer!
Just trying things I reloaded a saved config file, even tried EEINT and

Well, sun came out late this afternoon.. and one can see more than 100
yards...and across the freeway stands 3 large towers!!! Maybe this was
overloading far beyond what the KX3 ATU can handle? as I read somewhere
it has broadcast filters built into the ATU.

Any recommendations on a external filter I can buy, so during my evenings in

Re: [Elecraft] Multiband end-fed dipole with KX1

2014-02-22 Thread Doug Person
I have had success using an End-fedz multi-band antenna for 40 and 20.
The same concept would work to add 30 meters as well. The End-fedz uses
a stub to achieve resonance on 20 and the full length for 40. Another
stub for 30 should work just fine. They are made and sold by PAR
Electronics http://www.parelectronics.com/end-fedz.php

I use on regularly on 17 meters and its performance is
indistinguishable from a dipole. PAR Electronics also sells a 3 band
model for 40, 20 10. They are well made and reasonably priced.

I bought a bunch of big toroids and I intend to see if I can make some
that will handle the output from the KPA500. That will be a summer project.

Of course, you can build you own for peanuts if you have a suitable
toroid and some wire.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?

2014-02-22 Thread Doug VE3VS
Hi Glenn,
I started using PSK31 many, many years ago, when it was first introduced by
a ham in the UK. It was made very clear to operators that minimum power
should always be used for a QSO. It was suggested that more than 10 watts
was excessive. As mentioned in one of the other replies, many transmissions
can fall within the receiver passband when using this mode. If you, or
anyone else uses much higher power, that strongest signal will take over
the passband on most receivers, spoiling other QSOs that are going on at the
time.

I have noticed over the past five years or more there has been a steady
increase in the power being used by thoughtless or unknowing operators. As a
result of this power creep, I have drifted away from a mode that I once
thoroughly enjoyed.

With your KX3, you should not normally need an amp to use PSK31.

Doug, VE3VS

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?

2014-02-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

Doug,

While low power may have been the recommendation, I started in PSK31 in
2000 when I had only a K2/10. I ran it in the 5 to 10 watt range. When
I revealed my power level, many ops asked why I was running only that
much power.

So the push for higher power has been going on since shortly after the
beginning of PSK31.

While I do use it occasionally, that factor and the preponderance of
hello, brag sheet, goodbye QSOs has soured me on the mode. It used to
be a lot of keyboard to keyboard ragchew QSOs, but that is rare these
days. No opportunity to get to know something about the ham you are in
QSO with.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?

2014-02-22 Thread Bill Frantz
When I went back to New Hampshire last Christmas, I decided that
the trip would be a rag chew trip. Since the only radio I had
was the Small Wonder Labs PSK-20 -- The K3 is too big to carry
and I don't yet have a KX3 -- it had to be rag chewing on 20M
PSK. I found a number of people to chat with and had a good time
on the radio.

I have a few thoughts on how to encourage rag chewing. Since
people are used to the 5NN QRZ type of interchange, start
chatting early in the QSO. I use macros for the boiler plate --
name, QTH, and call signs and use the keyboard for everything
else. I'm lucky that after 40+ years as a computer programmer, I
can type quite rapidly. Don't worry about typing slowly however.
Rag chewing isn't a contest or a DX pileup.

In my first exchange after exchanging call signs, I try to give
meaningful signal reports, I'll start with:

Hi OM, you are 569 569 569
and then run my QTH macro. If the other OP has already sent a
name I'll use it in place of OM. Later in the QSO, if the
other OP has already described the station, I'll try to include
something about his station when I describe mine. By then we
should be ready to branch out and talk about ARES/RACES,
contesting, DX, WX, family, Christmas dinner -- anything that
might come up.

It doesn't always work, but then just move on and do/answer
another CQ.

As to being overpowered by strong stations, the K3 with a 250 Hz
filter works wonders. However, for me, the real problem stations
have been local running well under 50 watts. When you're in the
target of a beam 1/4 mile away, it doesn't take much power to
overload the A/D converter driving the computer.

The PSK-20 doesn't have any narrow filters like the K3 does, but
in New Hampshire there aren't any close by PSK operators either.
I rarely see any New England stations on my waterfall. (20
meters is that way. I had a devil of a time working Nevada from
the Los Gatos too.)

Now there are times and places for rag chewing. Contests, DX
pileups, and rare opening aren't them. At times when it is
appropriate, try to encourage it.

Re: [Elecraft] OT OS gotchas

2014-02-22 Thread Kenneth A Christiansen
Hi David and the group

I have run XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 and now Windows 8.1 since each system came
out. There were some growing pains moving from from Windows XP to Windows 7 and
again to Windows 8 as the procedures changed from what we were used to. I had
to upgrade MIXW but now Windows 8 and 8.1 have been out long enough that most
programs are all set for it. I have found the Windows 8.1 and 8 to be much more
stable. I can not remember the last time I had a blue screen of death. I have
been in the NAQP contest this week end with ROCKY 1.7, MIXW, MMTTY and N3FJP
all running at the same time hooked to my KX3/KXPA100 with no problems of any
kind. I remember my first contest on RTTY 8 years ago and this is sure a great
improvement. I am also volunteering for AARP tax help and have done 35 tax
returns so far this year plus the classes on line to prepare for the season all
with no problems.

My advice is pick the system you want and learn how to use it. Windows 7, 8 and
8.1 are all well supported. XP works well but will not be supported which means
software in the future may not run on it and of course virus protection will no
longer be updated.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] - Digital Modes Interface - Working Split

2014-02-22 Thread Rick Prather
Joel,

Since you mention using RUMped I assume you are using a Mac.

On the Mac if you run cocoaModem in the wide RTTY mode you don't need to
run more than one iteration of the software to copy both the DX station and
the pile up. If you have the second receiver you can tell cocoaModem to
use one of the waterfalls for the Left channel and the pile up in the Right
channel. Works like a champ and has helped me more than a few times to
find the last worked station and decide my transmit strategy from there.

With this set up stereo input to the sound card is mandatory and one of the
several reasons I don't have a Signal Link.

There is plenty of reason to be able to decode both the dx station and the
callers. It is necessary to locate the QRG of the station currently
working the DX in the pileup. The K3 with a sub-receiver makes it easy. I
use N1MM set up with MMTTY under the C/ and another MMTTY set up under
/Program Files. Each iteration of MMTTY can be set to it's own audio
channel, i.e., left or right, under optionsset upmisc. Also, if you
have a decent audio card in your computer, you don't need any interface,
just a couple of 3.5 mm stereo patch cords plus a PPT connection (serial
cable or USB adapter-Elecraft's works great) for full functioning two
frequency RTTY. You can also work one digital format while monitoring
another, for example working JT65/9 while monitoring RTTY activity.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?

2014-02-22 Thread WA7SPY
Thank you for all the replies they were very informative. In my original post I
stated KPA100. It should have been KXPA100 my bad on my part. Most of you
figured out what I meant.

I agree about the hi and bye PSK31 QSO's these days. That being said I will say
I have had some really nice rag chew QSO's lately on PSK31. I typically start
turning my power down during a QSO to see how low I can go and still have a
good copy.

I do have my KX3 connected to a Hard Rock 50, 50 watt amplifier. I run the Hard
Rock at 20 watts or less on PSK31.

In regard to the KXPA100 my original question was to find out what the max
output power would be safe to go to without causing damage to the amp. If I am
correct the answer is the amp will protect itself and automatically throttle
itself back if the temp to the finals gets too hot.

Now in regard to the KX3 without the amp 2-3 watts is recommended for PSK31.
What does 2 -3 watts driving the KXPA100 equate to for output power from the
amp. I will be using the Elecraft cable set to integrate the amp. So from what
I have read that means the PA menu is selected to on on the KX3. That means the
power control on the KX3 is re-indexed. So does that mean it is safe to run in
the 20-30 watt range with the amp without over driving the KX3 for PSK31?

Thank you

Re: [Elecraft] OT OS gotchas

2014-02-22 Thread EricJ
I also have had no real issues other than minor cockpit errors learning
a few different things. Moving from Win 7 to Win 8 was almost
transparent. You can run virtually any Win 7 program without issue, and
run it from the Win 7 desktop without even dealing with anything Win 8.

A few programs I had on my XP machine required driver updates. No big
deal at all.

I can't thing of a single ham related program that I use that doesn't
work, even the LADPACK programs from the EMRFD disk.

The big surprise was updating my little Dell XP netbook with only 1 gb
of memory to Win 8. It transformed that computer. Many programs run
faster now than they did under XP. Some that would not run well under XP
are now completely usable. I've heard that Win 8 is much more efficient
managing memory. I can believe that.

I also have never had a blue screen or anything remotely close to it.
Win 7 and 8 are both very stable for me.

I would gladly search the archive but what keywords would dig this information

Re: [Elecraft] K3 external speaker output dead

2014-02-22 Thread bill conkling
If you used s stereo plug, how is it wired? Should be tip and shield for ONE
speaker.

Also is SPKR + PH set to YES? If this is NO then you won't have any speaker
output. If the internal spkr works this isn't a problem.

I picked up an HP computer at Amazon of netbook
ilk: 1 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, 10.6
inch screen for $280, Eric. It came with Win 8.1
and I added a shell program to make it look like
Win 7. I mainly use MacBooks these days (and they
do have dual boot, Win7 OS X 10.9.1/2,
capability). But I wanted something small for the
operating position: a 15 screen obscures my
transceivers. At the price I'm very pleased with
the HP; even has a USB3 port, important because my
primary machine (13 MB Air) and production
machine (Dell Win 7 PC with 6 TB of hard drives
and very fast burners) both have USB3.

I've been pleasantly surprised by Win 8.1, now
that I have it booting to the desktop! And for
realy weirdness, it even has a touch screen.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?

2014-02-22 Thread Matt Zilmer
Hi Glenn,

Typically, the KX3 runs 5W to get 100W output from the KXPA100 (13 dB
gain). There are minor varations due to calibration, but that's the
gist of it.

73,
matt

Now in regard to the KX3 without the amp 2-3 watts is recommended for PSK31.
What does 2 -3 watts driving the KXPA100 equate to for output power from the
amp. I will be using the Elecraft cable set to integrate the amp. So from what
I have read that means the PA menu is selected to on on the KX3. That means
the power control on the KX3 is re-indexed. So does that mean it is safe to
run in the 20-30 watt range with the amp without over driving the KX3 for
PSK31?
