Re: [Elecraft] Big Screen for K4

Alan -

I am sure others will weigh in with more detail, but I feed an external
monitor via the HDMI out from the K4D and it can be setup to 'mirror' the
K4D, or to just display the waterfall. If there are more options I don't
recall.

Re: [Elecraft] On ground - in ground radials

2022-01-17 Thread David Bunte
At my last QTH (I moved a week ago), I had 3000' feet of #14 THHN under my
30' vertical. I paid about $30 per 500' roll. Putting them down was a
relative piece of cake. I cut the grass as short as my mower would permit,
then laid the radials on the ground, securing them with sod stables as
often as needed to keep them close to the ground. Within a week they were
hard to see... and the first mowing after installation resulted in NO lost
wires at all.

In ten years with that antenna at two different locations I confirmed over
300 countries, 9 BDXCC and over 1800 on Challenge. I was blessed with a
very quiet location, and for the last few toward DXCC on 160 I did increase
the height of the antenna to 43' and added a 160/80 meter matching network.
I felt it was the best I could do on my small lot, and it gave MANY hours
of pleasure.

you can get service.

Re: [Elecraft] Mic headset for K3

2021-02-22 Thread David Bunte
Hank -

As primarily a CW operator I am also a "mic dufus", but I did make almost 2
dozen SSB QSOs with my K3 in the past three years and got excellent
reports. I used to use a CM500 with excellent results, but when I got
hearing aids I found that an "on the ear" style rather than an "over the
ear style" was better for me. I found a $6 gaming headset that was great.
However, I ran over the cord once too often with my chair and got an
intermittent in the cord. Rather than try to fix it I decided to replace it
and got an INSIGNIA gaming style headset from BEST BUY for about $24 as I
recall. The EQ settings I used with the CM500 worked very well with the
first cheap headset and I have not changed then for this one.

Locals, who know me well enough say that I sound very natural with good
clean audio. One person said that they thought I should crank up the gain
and compression to assure pileup busting... but that was not a priority so
I left it alone. I was VERY happy with the CM500 but am even happier with
what I have now.

There may be technical differences between an electret and a condenser but
as a "mid dufus" I will yield to others in that regard. I think that "some"
condenser mics may require higher bias than the K3 supplies, but again I
must yield to others, who clearly know more about such matters than do I.

Re: [Elecraft] Headphones for Hearing Loss

2021-01-26 Thread David Bunte
Shu -

Please allow me to add my thoughts to the discussion. My hearing loss is
not profound, but when I started using hearing aids I had to ditch my
Yamaha CM-500 headset, as its over the ear style rubbed against the behind
the ear receiver in canal style of my hearing aid. That made for a LOT of
unwanted noise. I went to an on the ear headset and have been very happy.

That might not do the job for someone with severe hearing loss because the
mic for the aid is in the unit behind the ear. I use the Bluetooth
capability of these hearing aids for phone calls and it is amazing how good
it sounds... better than using the phone in a more conventional manner. My
hearing aids do allow me to boost the high end, and I can adjust the levels
between the right and left aid. These units are Phonak Audeo P90 units. I
had to pay big bucks because they are not covered by any of my insurance.
My brother-in-law just got a pair like these through the VA at no cost to
him... he thanked me for paying my taxes.

The option of piping your rig into your hearing aids might be the solution
if you have that option.

I also like that quote... sadly there is no credible evidence that Albert
Einstein ever said or wrote that. There is evidence that it is

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 Antenna Tuner "Hunting"

2020-08-02 Thread David Bunte
Pete -

I don't have a KPA1500, but do have a KPA500 with a KAT500... and the first
thing that comes to mind is manual vs auto on the tuner... IF they can be
selected on the '1500. With the KAT500 after the tuner has found a matching
solution for each band segment, I then put the tuner in manual, and when I
change bands the tuner selects the correct tuning solution and it does not
seek a new one while I am transmitting. I know that was the advice for the
KAT500 from the time I first got mine years ago. I assume that is valid
advice for the tuner in the KPA1500, assuming that is an option.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Astron RS-35M Transformer Hum

2020-04-24 Thread David Bunte
David -

I have an RS-35M, that sits on a shelf under my operating desk. I leave it
on 24/7, and never gave any thought to acoustic hum from it. I just ducked
my head down below the desktop, and 'thought' I could hear some hum. I
turned off the power supply and verified that there is a little bit that I
could detect. I am blessed with better than average hearing for a
76-year-old, but that is largely thanks to my hearing aids.

In the past I have had pretty bad hum from power supply transformers, and
the worst case I ever had was totally cured by tightening the bolts that
held the laminations together. That was pretty easy because it was an open
frame transformer in a home brew KW amp. In a number of transformers I have
paid attention to in the past few years, the screws or bolts that hold the
transformer to the chassis go through the corners of the laminations, and
tightening those may also help.

I have been "told" that acoustic hum is often made more evident because the
chassis is vibrating... and that putting some dampening material (a sheet
of rubber for example) under the transformer goes a long way toward
reducing the problem.

Best of luck.

Re: [Elecraft] Antennas an opinion W9VNE

2020-03-16 Thread David Bunte
This thread brings to mind that we can always think of ways our situation
could be better, but it is still true that any antenna is better than no
antenna.

I know many folks have better locations than mine, and FAR better antennas,
but that has not kept me from having tons of fun, and fairly good DX
success.

In my HOA limited neighborhood, here in Indiana flatland, I have a 30' Flag
Pole vertical over mostly clay. That has been my only antenna for about 9
years. For the first 5 years I had 2000' of radials with my antenna tuner
in the shack. For the last 4 years I have had 3000' of radials and a tuner
at the base of the antenna.

I have not worked everything I have called, but have managed to confirm 303
countries including 84 on 160 and 1745 on DXCC Challenge. Friends tell me I
am very fortunate... I agree. I knew I could get on the air, but I am
having greater success than I expected and therefore tons of fun.

I have seen some folks delay putting up an antenna for years because they
could not decide what would be the very best antenna. I say learn what you
can... put up something... and improve on it over time if you are able.

Re: [Elecraft] Learning Morse Code

Tom -

I can't handle the higher speeds at which Jim is comfortable, but his
suggestions are excellent. I think I stopped writing down stuff by the time
I approached 15 wpm... except, of course Callsigns, names and QTH because I
wanted those in my log... sometimes I will make other notes in the log to
recall in future QSOs. By the time I got to 20 WPM I had to look for a
paper and pencil if I wanted to write something down... as I put all the
other stuff right into my logging program.

Just getting on the air and making QSOs has helped my speed more than
anything else. Finding someone with whom to chew the rag... not only helps
code speed, I think it makes the hobby even more enjoyable.

and secured permission to bring his QRP rig and a whip antenna that he
clamped to a deck railing to get on the air.

I realize that the most recent of these was about 7 or 8 years ago but my
guess is that you got the “standard” response, and would encourage you to
keep trying.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 original - ALC erratic

Jim -

I have no answer, but mine has always been extremely critical. I can set it
for 4 bars... and it won't budge... but I can't set it for the 5th bar
blinking... it goes from 4 solid to 5 solid no matter how much I play with
the various level controls. I don't do a lot of digital work, so I am not
really too concerned. There may be something I am missing, but I just leave
it at 4 bars and hope for the best.

It is interesting that the seller of the K3 from that estate does

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Coax size requirements

2019-08-20 Thread David Bunte
Carter -

I run my KPA500 from the 120v outlet in my shack. I have done so for years
with no problems. I use LMR400 coax, but I know several folks who use RG8-X
with the KPA500, even on very long runs and some with amps putting out 1000
to 1500 watts. The better your antenna the less of a problem with that. If,
however, your antenna has a very high SWR without the use of the KAT500
tuner, then the tuner will make the rig happy, but there will still be SWR
loss on the coax, and it will be greater with RG8-X than with a larger and
lower loss coax.

Best of luck.

As I read Jerry's post, I believe his fan was running even after the amp

running at full speed was to either turn the amp on... or turn off the
power switch on the rear. He also stated that the menu setting was set to
NOR, so I think Jack is on the right track to check with support.

Re: [Elecraft] Handedness

2019-06-01 Thread David Bunte
Bill -

I'll turn 76 this month, and have significant peripheral neuropathy, so I
can understand what you are concerned about... but it has never been an
issue with me and my K3 because I have NEVER connected ANYTHING to the
phone or mic jacks on the front of the radio. I have used the rear jacks
ever since I got my radio in 2011. That way the headset cables are routed
under my operating desk and are thus never in the way of my keyboard, or my
hands as I do operate the radio with my left (non-dominate) hand.

Using the rear jacks rather than the front ones may be a zero to very
low-cost solution to those connectors being in the way.

Best of luck.

You referenced P. 21 of the February QST and Bill - KC4IM referenced P. 19

version show the KPA1500 on the upper half of the page, with the K3, P3,

Hopefully, some reader who has the K3 and the KPA1500 can send Martin a
picture of what he wants to see. Or, perhaps Elecraft can supply that.

Page 69 of the K3 manual says that means the key circuit is closed when the
rig is turned on. It may be a different page for the K3S, but my guess is
it is the same issue.

Re: [Elecraft] wire for random wire antenna using kx3

2018-12-17 Thread David Bunte
Rick -

I think speaker wire would work just fine. Up to a point, wire is wire. I
used some #18 insulated wire, with a 9:1 un-un and a KX3 while visiting in
Florida several years ago. I ran the wire between two trees, as high as I
could get it, and the tuner in the KX3 matched it on 160 through 10 meters.
It was temporary, as I was down there for only 3 weeks, but I had a ball,
and was amazed at how well it worked, all around the globe.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 as a remote-controlled tuner

2018-11-04 Thread David Bunte
I have dreamed about remoting my KAT500, but since it won't match my 30'
vertical on 80 or 160, I went with a tuner that will do so. It is a remote
tuner but not automatic. For a variety of reasons I have it sitting under a
"Fake" rock that I got at a big box home improvement center. I think it
cost about $28 and protects the tuner from UV and lots of other stuff...
PLUS my XYL thinks it looks great compared to the tuner box sitting there.
I also have a smaller fake rock over the conduit where it comes up by the
tower base... a couple of real rocks (small boulders) helps 'balance' the
look at the base of the antenna.

If I recall correctly, AB2TC remotely controls his KAT500. He may weigh in
on this discussion. What I recall of his setup is well thought out.

Re: [Elecraft] Worldwide Transceiver Survey

2018-10-03 Thread David Bunte
I would not assume that it has anything to do with ICOM supporting the
survey, and more with the fact that there are probably many more ICOM HF
rig owners than Elecraft owners... if that is true then I am a bit
surprised that Yaesu and Kenwood are not ahead of Elecraft... but what does
it matter anyway. I don't know a soul who would sell their Elecraft rig
just because of the results of that "survey".

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] factory upgrade to K3(s)

2018-06-26 Thread David Bunte
Robert -

I had mine done last year. The K3 cannot be fully upgraded to a K3s, and
what all 'can' be done depends on such things as: Do you already have the
new synthesizer board or boards, depending on having the sub receiver or
not. And, are there options that you do not want.

Perusing the Elecraft website will give you a pretty good idea, and if you
have questions just email support and discuss what you have, what they can
do, and what you want... then they can give you a much better idea than I
can.

I already had the new synths in my K3, and the upgrades I opted for came in
at close to, but somewhat under $1000 including shipping.

Best of luck,

Dave - K9FN

Re: [Elecraft] n00b Amp question

2018-05-23 Thread David Bunte
Richard -

There are probably more technical responses than this, but I think the
simple answer is that if you have a 100W Solid State amp, and drive it with
100W you will likely either destroy something, or the system will self
protect and shut down. I know that with my K3 and KPA500 combo, I get 500
watts out with about 28 watts from the K3... if I raise the output power of
the K3 to a bit above 30 watts (maybe 32 or 33w), the amp 'faults' because
of excessive drive, so my 500 watts amp gives me 500 watts when driven by
an appropriate amount of RF. If it is additive, I am not aware of it.

I believe the answer is somewhat different if using a tube type amp in a
grounded grid configuration.

Many thanks for posting where you were on 20. I did not see any spots for
you, and you were down in the noise far enough that I would not likely have

was you. Snagging CE2SV on 10 meters, and working you for the first time,
were manor highlights of this special day.

Thanks for the QSO (brief tho it was).

Re: [Elecraft] CW sending Using two keys Macro to switch mode for right and left?

2018-03-19 Thread David Bunte
Bill -

I have never tried t send with my non-dominant hand, but I do have two
paddles. They are plugged into my DIGI KEYER II through a stereo 'Y' cable.
I have not tried this, but it seems to me that you could do that and wire
the paddles so that one was 'right handed' and the other was 'left handed'.
If that won't work, I apologize, but I think it will, and then all you need
to do when switching hands is to just start sending with the other hand...
no macros, switches, or changing the position of the paddle on the desk.

Re: [Elecraft] Planning the next filters

2018-03-08 Thread David Bunte
Chuck -

You will likely get a wide variety of responses, and here is mine. I added
the 400 Hz filter to my main and sub receiver. I work CW almost
exclusively. I rag chew and chase some DX. I barely “dabble” in contests. I
can’t recall a single time when I thought a narrower CW filter would have
made a difference for me. It may help that my antenna is quite modest, and
I don’t have other hames near enough to impede my reception.

Best of luck as you proce d.

Re: [Elecraft] power supply for KX-3?

2018-03-01 Thread David Bunte
Noel -

I do not have a KX3, but a good buddy does and he uses this supply:
https://proaudioeng.com/products/pae-kx33-low-rfi-ac-power-supply/

He has been VERY happy with it, and has never noticed any issues like those
that sometimes occur with switching supplies. If you are sure you won't be
hauling it around a bunch, then any good clean supply will suffice.
Personally, I would look for a linear supply that had sufficient capability
that if I was going to add the PX3 and KXPA100, I would not then have to
look for another supply.

I did use a friend's KX3 for several weeks when on vacation a couple of
years ago and it sure is a fine radio.

Best of luck.

Re: [Elecraft] Suggestions needed - antenna to tuner

2018-02-12 Thread David Bunte
Alan -

I am pleased with results I have gotten with units from BALUN DESIGNS.
Their 1161 & 1171 models are possible choices. I know some folks would
rather spend less and build their own, but if that is not your preference,
then look at these models.

Best of luck.

Re: [Elecraft] SP-3 frequency range question

2018-02-04 Thread David Bunte
Bill -

I saw your earlier request. Don’t know if I saw more than one. I did not
respond then because I thought the first post said something about how
great the SP3’s sounded on music, but I could be remembering wrong. The
other reason I did not respond is because I assumed someone with an SP3, or
someone who recalled the earlier post would answer (that seems to be the
norm here).

Hope you get a more helpful response soon.

I have a friend with an XV50 & XV144 that I think are excess to his needs.
As far as I know they are both in excellent condition, rather than "basket
cases, broken, or unloved". If you are willing to consider units like that,
I can pass along your interest to him.

Re: [Elecraft] CW paddle trivia

2017-11-09 Thread David Bunte
My current paddle, and perhaps many others can be turned upside down and
used by a southpaw. Of course, you would want to protect the top of the
paddle, and the operating surface from any scratches that might result. I
have seen guys do this at my shack, and at FD. I have also done it when at
a friends shack and I found that turning his 'left handed' paddle around
and reaching over was really awkward. Turning it over was very natural.

I have run my KPA500 at rated power for several years from nominal 120 volt

Re: [Elecraft] setting up digital on k3

2017-10-20 Thread David Bunte
Don -
I had exactly the same problem and got it going a couple of days ago,
thanks to help from W4TV on the microHAM list.
The 'magic' setting that got things going for me was to go into the K3 Main
Menu, while the radio was in the DATA A mode, and find MIC SEL and set it
to LINE IN.
Then exit the menu and set the front panel MIC GAIN so you have 4 bars
solid, and the 5th bar blinking on the ALC meter. I did that by putting the
K3 in the TEST mode, so I would not be putting out any RF, and then clicked
on the TUNE tab in WSJT-X.
I hope that gets you going. I am no expert, but that is what made it work
for me. Shortly after doing that I made my first FT8 QSO.
Best of luck and very 73 de Dave - K9FN

Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] K3S/KPA500/KAT500 - Adjusting TX Power

2017-09-04 Thread David Bunte
Bret -

I recall hearing that as well. That has not been my experience. My antenna
presents a real challenge on some bands, but right now, for example, on
14.019 I have 1.34:1 indicated SWR in the shack at about 20 watts tune
power. Key down with the KPA500 in line, showing power of 585 watts and the
SWR holding steady at 1.34:1.

If I put my remote tuner in ByPass, and use my KAT500, I am seeing the SWR
at 1.28:1, whether at 20 watts, or at 500 watts. But, I will gladly use the
remote tuner which is right at the base of my 30' Flag Pole Vertical. It is
not a big deal on some bands, but with 125' of LMR400 coax, there is more
loss on a few bands than I want to give away. I cannot tune this antenna on
160 with the KAT500, because impedance is WAY too low, and the native SWR
is 'out of sight'. The KAT500 is an awesome tuner, but nowhere near up to
that task.

My remote tuner will make the rig happy on 160, but my antenna is so short
for 160 that many folks think I am crazy to even try it, but I never
claimed to not be crazy... I just keep on having fun.

Best of luck,

Dave - K9FN

Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] K3S/KPA500/KAT500 - Adjusting TX Power

2017-09-04 Thread David Bunte
Bret -

W6FB - Jack, was spot on with his information regarding the differing
readings... but I have an added question. If your SGC-235 gives an
acceptable match, then why use the KAT500 at all? I think that it is seldom
a good idea to use two antenna tuners in series... at least that has been
my thinking for the past 60 years. Am I missing something.

I have a K3, P3, KPA500 & KAT500... but also have a hi power remote tuner
at the base of my vertical. My KAT500 is bypassed, UNLESS I have a failure
in my remote tuner, in which case I can bypass it, and quickly switch to
the KAT500.

If there is a compelling reason to run both tuners I could try that, but
thought that was ill advised.

Re: [Elecraft] RF feedback? only when using KXPA100

2017-08-07 Thread David Bunte
Jim -

I recently sent my K3 to the 'Mother Ship' for some upgrades while my wife
and I took a 3 week road trip. I hooked up the returned rig over the
weekend. Much to my chagrin, I was extremely high SWR. I verified that I
had the RF path correct from the K3 through assorted other devices and to
the antenna. While doing so I noticed one coax connector that was about 1/4
to 1/2 turn loose. I tightened it, and all was fine... for about 30
seconds.

Remembering what a wise man once said I suspected a bad piece of coax. I
checked the same connection again... it was loose... as I tightened it, all
of a sudden it became loose again. This was a 1 foot jumper, from a company
that advertises heavily. I had been using it for several years from the
output of my KPA500 to the sensor for my LP-100A. The threads did not
appear to be stripped, although it felt like it. I looked like the threads
were cur very shallow. I replaced it with a jumper I made many years ago,
using
Amphenol connectors, and all is now working as it should.

Well... not quite all... I have made some nice CW QSOs, but decided to
check SSB operation. It is not working on that mode (which I almost never
use), but I will tackle it to see what is not set correctly.

The new sub receiver comes with the new synthesizer, so you will only need
to replace the one in your main receiver, if you have not already done
that. The synthesizers must both be the same.

Re: [Elecraft] Flash mob experiment, right now, 28.050 +/- 5?

2017-06-12 Thread David Bunte
I only had a few minutes, and worked 5 stations. N8NN was my first. His
signal was actually only 559 but I gave him 599 before looking at the
meter. My noise level was VERY low this morning so several signals really
jumped out at me. Some were honest S-9 sigs... a real treat.

As near as I could tell at a glance, I was picked up by 6 or 7 skimmers,
from coast to coast, plus J68HZ & PJ2A.

I was running my KPA500 at about 450 watts, but my antenna is just a 30'
Flag Pole vertical, so it was a real treat to work anybody.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] New from Elecraft: KPA1500 amplifier with built-in ATU, separate power supply

Wes -

Excellent points. One of the locals has very fine antennas, but really
appreciates the fact that his PW-1 can make the SWR look a 'bit' better. At
my QTH, and TUNER, is absolutely necessary... but that is because I have
only one antenna, and it is usable without a tuner on only one band. The
internal tuners in most rigs can't handle it... the tuner in my K3, or my
KAT500, are perfect on most bands. But a 30' vertical is a HUGE challenge
for ANY tuner on 160... and many can't handle it on 80.

Re: [Elecraft] Amplifier thoughts

2017-03-29 Thread David Bunte
John -

I used to live in the world you do... but I now live in a neighborhood
where I can't put up a tower, or even a multiband dipole. My 30' Flag Pole
is OK, and, in fact, my neighbors think it is quite nice looking, but in
order to use it on more than the one band where its unmatched SWR is less
than 3:1, I must use a tuner.

I don't expect to be in the market for an amp that is more capable than my
KPA500, but my guess is that an optional, internal tuner capable of
handling 1500 watts into a 3:1 or lower SWR, would suite quite a few
potential users quite well. That way, someone like you, who does not need a
tuner at all could opt to not order that option.

If Elecraft chooses to market an external tuner capable of handling 1500
watts into a 10:1 SWR, then I hope it is one that could be placed out at
the antenna, and controlled remotely. For some folks, putting such a tuner
in the shack, but out of sight would be equally appealing.

Thanks for the clarification. I had missed that the headphones are actually
matched once you get them, and that can be re-done as needed. I think that

I am going to share the link with locals, some of whom are not happy with

I agree, the difference after their "tweaking" was significant.

As I indicated, I am now using a "gaming" headset, because I may make 2 or
3 SSB contacts during the year, and want to be ready... but in my 73 plus

I do think they are quite interesting and I believe you are correct in that
they tailor the response to each ear separately. My hearing aids do that
for me. Where I think these phones become less attractive, is that as your
ears change, a new set may become necessary. Also, the way they evaluate
what settings would be "correct" for you, seems too dependent on the
headphones with which you take their test.

I am very happy with the "Gaming" set from Plantronics that I got from BEST

Re: [Elecraft] 9:1 Balun

2017-01-31 Thread David Bunte
I have limited experience with a wire fed via a 9:1 "un-un", but that
experience was VERY good.

I borrowed a KX3 from a friend when I went to visit family in FL a few
years ago. I had a 9:1 "un-un", about 126' of wire, and 50 feet of RG8-X. I
got the feedpoint, up 30 feet into a tree, and the far end over limb of
another tree. That point was about 15 feet above ground. About 7 feed of
the wire hung straight down toward the ground. I used a 30 foot
counterpoise, that hung down from the "un-un", along with the coax.

I did not try 160 (this was in mid-summer), but the ATU in the KX3 achieved
a good enough match on 80 through 10 meters... and I made a few hundred
QSOs, including some nice long rag chews, and 68 countries in just shy of 3
weeks. A couple of locals are using the same design as their primary
antenna for 160 & 80 meters.

I got my "un-un" from Balun Designs, and they also have a chart on their
website with some suggested wire lengths.

Best of luck es 73 de

Re: [Elecraft] Portable Ops with KX3 along with KXPA100

2016-09-20 Thread David Bunte
Phil -

N9FN and I have operated portable in various state QSO parties using his
Honda EU2000 with no RF noise we could detect. We often used his KPA500 and
that generator handled it quite well.

The Honda 1KW unit is lighter and would certainly handle the gear you are
talking about. I have heard reports that "some" folks experienced RFI with
that unit, and even some with the EU2000 but I believe any such problems
can probably be mitigated by physical separation and chokes. We are usually
about 20 feet from the generator and cannot hear it running from that
distance.

Best of luck.

Re: [Elecraft] Please recommend an HD monitor to use with P3SVGA

2016-07-04 Thread David Bunte
I realize this is off the topic of which monitor to get, but multiple
monitors do take up more space. The idea of mounting a monitor, or
monitors on arms does address the issue of desk space, but I decided
against that due to the cost issue, and those arms still need to be mounted
on something.

My solution was VERY much less expensive. I made sure my monitors were
VESA mount capable. I then mounted them to the wall directly in front of
me. Yes, I put about three holes in the wall to mount an angle bracket to
the wall. I then screwed another angled bracket to the back of each
monitor and they then 'hang' on the bracket that I attached to the wall.
The result is that the monitors are at the exact same height, and mine are
pushed together so they touch.

I know that no solution is perfect for every person or situation, but many
people who have seen pictures of my shack have asked how I got two monitors
to stay so perfectly aligned in relation to each other, and still have room
on my small desk for my K3, KPA500, P3 etc.

Re: [Elecraft] RFI on K3s

The first thing I would do is check the voltage at the K3. If you have a
long run of cable from your PS, of if you have connectors that are not
fully seated, or correctly installed, that would likely result in voltage
drop that would be detrimental.

Perhaps you already tried the phones in another piece of gear, or other

to see if the wire to the right phone broke in the plug assembly.

I hope that is all it is.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Turn on Blinding Flash

2015-12-24 Thread David Bunte
I have been mulling this over since I saw the initial post. I keep coming
back to the description as a "blinding flash", and "like a flash cube".
When my P3 first comes on, there is a moment when the entire screen lights
up, but the intensity appears to be exactly the same as the normal
brightness, of the display. I see NOTHING that I would describe as a
"blinding flash", or like a "flash cube". IF what you, and it would seem,
others are seeing, really is significantly brighter than the normal white
levels of the legend on the screen, etc., then I would certainly contact
Elecraft support directly.

Re: [Elecraft] Brown Bros. CTL-B paddles/key with K3

2015-10-14 Thread David Bunte
Steve -

I don't have a the CTL-B now, but did many years ago. The connection is
very straight forward.,, but you did not state if you use an external
keyer, or the keyer in the K3. If using an external keyer wire the paddle
portion of the CTL-B for the connector required by the paddle input of your
keyer. The output of the keyer will go to the KEY input of the K3, but you
will want to use a 1/4" mono 'Y' cable (two female, to one male), so you
can connect the straight key portion of the CTL-B in parallel with the line
from the keyer.

If you are using the keyer built into the K3 it is still very straight
forward. Wire the paddle to a 1/4" stereo plug, and plug it into the
PADDLE input of the K3. Wire the straight key portion of the CTL-B to a
1/4" plug and plug it into the KEY input of the K3.

Best of luck.

[Elecraft] CW Monitoring

2015-09-23 Thread David Bunte
A friend is having an issue that I cannot resolve. I maintain the station
for an elderly friend who prefers CW, and often operates at about 40 wpm.
A while back he told me that his "E"s were too short, and hoped I could
change the timing or weighting, or whatever to "fix them". When I hear him
on the air, I thought they sounded perfect... he swears that they used to
be, but no longer are.

I went over and verified that the weight setting on his K3 was set as mine
was, and that his microHAM keyer was set as mine was as well.

He still said that the letter "E" was way too short. Today I went over to
his QTH again. I sent some CW at 40 wpm and agreed with him that the
letter "E" seemed short... I listened carefully at a variety of speeds, and
down around 20 or 30 wpm all sounded good to both of us. I had no
instruments to verify what I was hearing, but it 'seemed' to me that up
around 40 wpm the leading dit of any character was a bit short. I admit, I
am not a 40 wpm guy, but that is how it sounded to me.

I then went into the next room, where he has a different station setup,
where I selected NO antenna, turned the RF gain way down, and tuned that
rig to the same freq as his K3. I then had him transmit at 0.1 watt from
the K3. To my ear the CW I was hearing on the other radio was perfect. We
then traded places, and I transmitted while he listened. I transmitted
from 40 up to 50 wpm, and he agreed that the CW coming from the K3 was
"perfect"... but at 40 wpm the monitor signal from the K3 does not sound
perfect. He said that it did sound perfect until a couple of months ago.

Assuming that it, in fact, does now sound different that when I first setup
the station for him, I have no idea what may have changed, or what to do
about it. As I indicated, I cannot quantify the change, but I do believe
that it is different. I am now home and my K3, with all the keying
settings the same as his, and with my microHAM keyer set the same as his,
sounds "perfect" at 40 wpm.

I started to wonder if a component in the monitor circuit may have changed
value, resulting in a truncation of the sound of that first dit.

I want to help my friend, but I have NO idea what to try next.

[Elecraft] Equipment placement

2015-09-17 Thread David Bunte
I have enjoyed the discussion and pictures of equipment stop etc... but was
a bit surprised by the number of photos I have seen of the KAT500 sitting
atop the KPA500.

I borrowed a KAT500 from a friend and placed it on top of my KPA500 because
I was just testing it and knew that would not be a long term arrangement.
I now own a KAT500 and my KPA500 sits on top of the tuner. PERHAPS the
cooling of the amp is not too severely impeded by placing the tuner on top
of the amp, but I did not want to take any chances and Elecraft clearly
states that the tuner is designed to be able to support the weight of the
amp.

Regardless of where it sits, the combination sure works nicely. My shack is
small, and I don't have other gear to accomodate, so my station layout was
very straightforward.

Re: [Elecraft] Product Idea for Elecraft

2015-09-10 Thread David Bunte
I find the tread about the Elecraft, vs other tuners to be interesting. I
have a K3 with the internal tuner. I also have the KAT500. I have
thousands of QSOs on those devices, and the tuners ALWAYS go back to the
memorized setting so fast I may sometimes not even notice that it
changed... but when I gift it RF I see that the SWR is right where I hoped
it would be. My experience was exactly the same with the KX3 that I
borrowed from a friend in the Summer of 2013, when I made hundreds of QSOs
on 80 through 10 meters into a 125' end fed wire.

I have far less experience with LDG or SGC tuners, but if you have an
Elecraft tuner that does not do the job almost instantly, then I suspect
there is something wrong, either in the setup, the initial training of the
tuner, or in the device itself.

If a person wants an external tuner of Elecraft quality, I suggest getting
the KAT500. It is more money than tuners rated for less power, but I have
a friend who got one to use with his IC756ProIII and an SGC amp. It
replaced his LDG-1000 PRO which fried (for reasons I am not aware of). I
felt that the KAT500 matched his antennas better and faster than the
internal tuner in the '756... but admit, that may have been prejudice on my
part... I am the one who talked him into the KAT500.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 tuner

2015-08-05 Thread David Bunte
Alan -

If you are satisfied with the performance of the MFJ tuner, you can
certainly give it a try. A friend of mine had one to sell a few years ago,
and let me try it on my very NON-resonant antenna. I have a 30' vertical
that requires a tuner on any except 30 meters. The tuner in the K3 handles
it quite well on 40 through 6 meters, but struggles on 80, where the native
SWR is about 18:1. The MFJ 998 could not achieve a decent match on 2 or 3
bands, including 40 meters, which is one of my favorite bands. I wanted to
get an amplifier, so I did not did not buy the 998. I now have the KAT500
and KPA500. The KAT500 has no trouble with those bands, so I can run my
amp at full power when and where I want... except for 80. For that band, I
switch to a Palstar AT-AUTO, and can run the amp at 500 watts. I know they
don't all get to the antenna, but I have only 30' of coax from there to the
antenna, and the coax is LMR600, so I have mitigated the losses somewhat.

A friend had a MFJ998 that he mounted outside in a weatherproof enclosure,
and ran 1500 watts to an inverted L. He was very happy with that setup,
until a tree fell on the enclosure and destroyed the tuner. He then bought
the MFJ998RT, and last I heard he was satisfied with it.

I am sorry, but I am not sure about the integration of the KAT500 with your
Icom 7100. Another friend used his Icom 7566PROIII with his KAT500, and
had to press Tune on the rig... and then Tune on the tuner... but once the
settings were memorized, then just a single DIT from the key, or a syllable
or two on SSB and the KAT500 was all set and ready to go.

 Hi all.

I currently have a MFJ 998 tuner which is good for 1.5KW but I think that
the KAT500 tuner from Elecraft will be a superior product. Would this be a
 sensible assumption?

If I also buy the KAT500, will it easily interface with my Icom IC700 and
is there a specific setting that would allow me to use the IC7100 “Tune”
button, which allows tuning at reduced power (ISTR it’s set at 10watts)?

I have used QSK for thousands of QSOs since I got my K3 4 years ago. I
have seen no changes at all.. but I am not a real QRQ op. I usually run
about 28 wpm... sometimes about 32, and very rarely a bit higher than
that. I did put in the new Synth boards, and have verified that QSK is now
silky smooth up to speeds much higher than I dare try to operate.

Best of luck getting everything to play the way you want it to.

I am a CW operator, but wanted to be able to work SSB from time to time. I
heard so many K3 users suggest the Yamaha CM500, that I tried one... in
part because the Heil Pro set I had was not comfortable for me. I can wear
it for hours, and when I have used it on SSB I have received very good
reports.

A friend recently got a K3 and also got the CM500. The first time he used
the radio was in a state QSO party. He made LOTS of contacts, and took
first place in his class. That was his intent... but he was surprised, and
very pleased, by the number of folks who took time during the contest to
tell him that he had outstanding audio. He used a Heil headset in the past
20 or so QSO parties he entered, with first place finishes in about half of
them, and NEVER got unsolicited compliments on his audio. That, was, of
course, also with a different radio.

Many folks have achieved EXCELLENT results for VERY few dollars, by
mounting an electret element (for just a few dollars), In some manner of
their own design, and have been happy. I liked the convince of the Yamaha,
which plug right into the rear jacks on the K3 (K3S is the same)... with no
need for adaptors, or connector changes.

For him that is important every moment he is on the air... He realizes he

worth it.

In my case, I seldom go over 30 wpm, so I did not need the upgrade the way
he did, but I am still glad I did it. I may never know how differently my
rig actually performs, but it seems quieter. I realize that could be
just because I want to justify the upgrade, but I am a very happy camper
regardless.

All this talk about better numbers is great, but has anyone done a side by

Not specific to E-craft, FKeys will do that for most any rig. I think Keith

Is there a Elecraft utility that would give you a panel of buttons that

Basically a Virtual button panel on the screen that would be full of
  Macros.

Is there something like that out there?

Re: [Elecraft] New K3 Syn

2015-02-27 Thread David Bunte
Doug -

From all the on topic traffic here during the last week, it would appear
that quite a few folks have installed the synth boards. I put one in my K3
and a pair in the K3 of a friend. I knew I wanted to do it the moment I
heard about it. My impression is that the band seems a bit quieter,
but sometimes my QTH is very quiet to start with. We have not
experienced K1N type pileups since I installed mine, but I don't expect to
be aware of the benefit, since I cannot switch back to the old board...
but I do expect to
from it most of the time I am on the air, and anytime the band is really
crowded.

The friend in whose K3 I installed a pair of them will benefit every time
he uses his K3. He is a QRQ CW operator, who is really excited to get RIT
function back while operating QRQ.

Whew! Glad that topic (Net Neutrality) is done with. Now, may I ask if
anyone has successfully installed the new synthesizer? From a purely
subjective point of view (ears only) - does it seem to provide an
improvement? I'm going to do the upgrade no matter what, just to keep my
K3 on the leading edge. But really curious how well it appears to work and
whether the improvements are only viewable on instruments or are notable to
 ones ears.
