Re: Well, it looks like i'm going to lose Tomi :(
I've done this as have a lot of people on the list. Try very hard to enjoy the days you have with Tomi and not to let the thought of losing him overshadow the deep love you share. He has things left to teach you and to share with you. If your grief overshadows your time together you will loose this and so will he. The Royal Princess Kitty Katt and Mai Mai taught me this in long, drawn out illnesses that totally broke my heart. I look back and realize grieving took away a lot of pleasure. None of us know when we are going to leave this world. Talk to Tomi and find out what his wishes areit will make you feel lots better. Blessings to you both. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man. RE: Felvtalk - introduction - Chewie and Stitch/Cassidy
I don't know where you live, but Cassidy is the most beautiful, friendly, loving cat! He's probably less than one year old, or around there. Here's his picture: He's gorgeous. I'm up in Vermont but am not really in a position to take in other cats at the moment, mostly because of Stitch's particular personality issues. :) If I think of or find anyone who is, though, or if my situation changes, I'll keep you in mind. Re: OT - ARGH to Pet Health Pharmacy
Well, the first time I got Missy's meds filled there they came quickly, with no problems. Then I got Shimmer's meds. Then they sent pills for Toodles when they were supposed to send compounded meds, and wouldn't take them back because I had opened the BAG (not the pill bottle, but the priority mail bag - how was I supposed to tell it was wrong if I didn't open it?). Then they made up 100 syringes of compounded Elavil for Toodles AND Shimmer. Which is more medicine than I could use before it went bad. Then they sent a FedEx bag for $18, only put one out of 4 meds in it, and sent the rest Priority Mail. Then one of the items in the Priority mail order was supposed to be refrigerated, but wasn't. I've come to the conclusion I can either have cheap(er) meds or get good service. Not both. On 4/12/07, wendy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey Kelley, I am sorry you are having troubles with this pharmacy. I'm sure I will get this straight eventually, but in the meantime Toodles, Shimmer, Sapphire and Joey are without their meds because they need a credit card payment in advance for anything over $100and I'm not paying $250 for Elavil. Thanks Joe! Vermont is quite a distance from Nebraska! But, of course keep us in mind if you know of any compassionate people would like and FeLV baby. A vacation with a purpose would be nice. However, I'm sure there are plenty of cats in need out East! And, luckily, Cassidy has been accepted to Best Friends in Utah (a little closer), if I don't find him a home before then. OT: Pregnant Feral Kitty....Questions
Hi all, It looks as we have a Feral pregnant Mom that has found her way to us. I'm going to trap her and put her on my back porch so she can tame down. Also have her babies safely. She is just a tiger strip kitty and very small. I have named her Little Girl My question is Can she be wormed? Do you recommend she be vaccinated before or after the birth of the kittens? I use Heska...it is intra nasal vaccination on my cats. I've never had any problems with it. I can tell she wants to be friendly with me. I can get about 2 feet from her and drop some food down. I back off and she eats it up. I have been feeding her with my other Feral kitties. I normally wouldn't ask these questions but never had a pregnant kitty either that lived outside that is feral. I can tell she is a baby herself she is under a year old at the most maybe 7-9 months old. I will get her spayed for free after the babies are born. So as you can see I'm clueless on this! Re: OT: Pregnant Feral Kitty....Questions
I see you haven't removed the invisible sign welcoming wayward ones from your front lawn :-) . I Googled your question about worming pregnant cats and got conflicting answers. If it where me, esp given her age and circumstance, I'd have her spayed and the kittens aborted. It may sound harsh, but I've come to that conclusion from harsh realities. I completely understand and respect your decision to let her have her kittens, esp if she is in good health and you are able to take on the responsibility. I love the babies and even with my harsh opening disclaimer would be thrilled to hear the pitter patter of little kitten paws about the place. If you are going to take this on, I would bring her to the vet and have her checked. At the very least, get a stool sample and have it checked for worms. I know there are certain worms that can be dangerous for the kittens. From the behavior you describe, I'm betting Little Girl will tame up in no time. She sounds like she is reaching out to you and has had at least some good experiences with humans. What a smart girl to have found her way to you! Congratulations. Terrie, I agree with Nina. I just made this difficult decision last week and had Nonie (a rescue) spay/abort. However, this is such a personal choice; you have to do what you feel is right. I took in 3 rescues/foster cats last week, and I don't run a shelter. Since I couldn't afford it if Nonie had babies, I decided to do this. Also, I know that where I live, trying to find a home for these three fosters will be next to impossible let alone a litter. His poo is now more odorous than his piddles, so it's very tolerable now. Also, I was able to switch him over to crystals quite easily by sprinkling his used clay litter over the top. Now everything dries out much faster and the smell is contained. He has a giant litter box (a plastic tote); he doesn't spray or mark; all-in-all we are very happy! I'm not sure if you read this on my other posts, but he's been accepted to Best Friends in Utah for after May 1st, but I can't take him there until after July 1st (pending his second IFA test), so it's kind of up in the air about his future there. Re: Pregnant Feral Kitty....Questions
I wouldn't even consider vaccinating her until after the babies are weaned. Vaccines weaken the body and, in her condition, even just a little could be too much. Check with a really good vet re worming. Without firm evidence that she had worms I wouldn't. How far along is she? Terrie, I disagree with aborting kittens unless you absolutely have no option. When I adopt kittens too young to be altered, the spay/neuter is included in the adoption fee and must be done at my vet. Bingo, if they are late getting them fixed I know it since I havent gotten a bill from my vet. I call and if they don't get them altered I take the cat back (its only happened once) then mom and all babes are fixed and the cycle for that family stops. I'm using steroids right now, 2 tablets of prednisone per day. This is back to the dosage he was at for a week after his transfusion. This is basically the last thing the vet said we could try, she didn't say anything about cyclosporins. I think he needs the immune suppression as well, though I don't know if his bone marrow isn't producing enough red cells, or the virus is killing the new cells. It just seems odd that his red count was going up for a couple of weeks after the transfusion, and now its going down. I'm wondering if maybe the virus took over his bone marrow while his immune system was suppressed from the prednisone, but I guess its pretty hard to know what is going on. Stitch - Questions!
feeding a super-premium commercial cat food, such as Innova, Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Cat, or Felidae (just some good examples - I feed felidae or Innova dry and merrick or innova canned), or you can make your own homemade diet using a recipe found My local small pet store seems to be well stocked and has Innova dry and canned and Merrick's canned, as well as a few other brands (Nature's Own I think was the other big one). I bought a couple cans of the Merrick's today so we'll see how she likes that. If she likes those I'll probably see about ordering larger supplies. I may go the route of making our own stuff here at some point, but not quite ready for that adventure. :) Still not an entirely alien experience as I've kept Iguanas in the past and I put quite a bit of effort into making weekly supplies of salad for them, when I still had them. :) I'm also a little curious about Interferon, which I've seen mentioned. Is this simply an immune booster or is it doing something else? As some have mentioned I probably will plan to get her retested in about 6 months, my only real concern with the Interferon is if it turns out she is clean on her second test is that something that can have any harmful effects? Another consideration is that the vet recommended a teeth cleaning because she's got some tartar/calculus build up and her gums are kind of red. The vet did mention that because of the FELV+ result, that we should give her antibiotics a day or two before she's due for that procedure to give her system a boost before the procedure, any opinions on that? I've also seen blood-tests what-not mentioned. I'm assuming when these are talked about, they're primarily general well-being kind of tests? This is something I should do? What type of results would be ideal/bad/inbetween? i.e., what should we be looking for? Thanks, Joe [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, it's not a great picture, but I do have a photo of Stitch posted on a web-forum I take part in (related to Fender guitars): http://www.fenderforum.com/userphotos/index.html?recid=18077 The other cat in the photo is Zoro and this picture was taken probably a month or two before he died, back in 2005. __ Do You Yahoo!? I have known of cat with hemo that had to be on the doxy for *longer than 6 weeks*, only my opinion but I would put him back on it. Has he been checked for Ehrlichia? (A cat with another disease such as feline leukemia will be more susceptible.) The prevalence of the disease is higher in male and outdoor roaming cats. It can be transmitted by ticks and also can be transmitted from an infected queen to her kittens. Symptoms can include sluggishness, depression and a lack of appetite that can become severe. *Feline Babesiosis* is a disease caused by a strain of a Babesia protozoan microorganism. The tick Rhipicephalus sanguineos is the culprit for this one. Signs to look for include fever, anemia and jaundice. *Feline Cytauxzoonosis* is a disease in domestic cats that causes severe anemia and can be fatal. It is transmitted by ticks and mainly by the Dermacentor variabilis. Cats with access to the outdoors are at a higher risk of this disease and, if infected, can exhibit fever, loss of appetite and depression. Re: Well, it looks like i'm going to lose Tomi :(
Those links are an interesting read, but from what I understood, Feline Babesiosis and Cytauxzoonosis are extremely rare in North America. It looks like those mainly occur in South America. For the Ehrlichia, it looks like it also uses Doxycycline as a treatment, so even if Tomi had it, he should be treated for it. It looks like bone marrow suppression is the main cause of anemia in FeLV cases, but they don't seem to offer any suggestion on dealing with that :(. There is one thing I am wondering about with Tomi, and I can't figure out the cause. For the last week or so, something seems to be irritating him. He will sometimes suddenly run a few steps and lick himself vigorously in several different spots. He also seems to be scratching his head/neck more often than normal. I was wondering if he might have fleas, but I can't see anything in his fur. I see no flea droppings etc. About all i've found is a couple of very small scabs, that could easily have been cause by his scratching. I doubt he has ear mites either, since his ears are very clean looking. Its not likely this has anything to do with his anemia, but its just something I find a bit odd. I hope you find a wonderful home for her. Another reason that being a black cat is a strike against her, is everybody over looks a black cat. What a little love this girl sounds like! Poor angel on her own with no front claws trying to get into the safety a human's car. It makes me want to go and scoop her up myself, (I won't even mention that to Bruce or my overcrowded household). Who has the cat right now? Has anyone posted flyers at the campground in case she accidently became lost from her people? Someone might be heartbroken and looking for her as I type this. Are you checking local papers for lost ads? Has someone posted a found ad in the paper near where the campgrounds are? They should also file a found report with the local animal shelter and ask if anyone has reported her missing to the shelter. She does have a strike against her because she's black, (I personally love black cats), but she has quite a rescue story and that might help to find her a home. The very best to you and this sweet baby, please let us know what happens to her. Hey... Wasn't there just someone very nice on this list that was thinking about adopting a neg cat??? Who was that? Can fleas cause anemia in adult cats?
I've been wondering why Tomi seems to be scratching more than normal, and licking himself vigorously once in awhile this last week. I wasn't that concerned about it since he doesn't scratch constantly, just more often than normal. I checked through his fur a few times, and didn't see much of anything. I've never noticed fleas on any of my other pets either. Tonight I noticed a some black dots on his lip and a little on his chin, so I checked his fur thoroughly with a flashlight. I found some more of the black dots on his tail. The rest of his fur looks clear, though it is difficult to see all of his skin through the thick fur. I imagine this could mean he has a few fleas, but would it be enough to actually cause his anemia? From what I read, fleas usually only cause anemia in young kittens and elderly cats. Likely i'm just overreacting, because I don't see how a few fleas would cause his PCV to be so low. As well, I would be scared to treat him with anything to kill them at the moment, while he's going through such a tough time. Cassandra

Don't vaccinate while pregnant or nursing. I have a mom and babies in a foster home right now -- mom found in a field with 2 week old babies and taken to the shelter, where I pulled her. We've already lost two of the four babies. Just found out yesterday that the shelter vet gave mom the FVRCP and rabies vaccines before releasing her. I am sure this stress on top of everything else is why we're losing kittens. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:In a message dated 4/14/2007 11:53:14 A.M. RE: OT: Pregnant Feral Kitty....Questions
I would spay her also, I'm sorry to say. I don't like it, neither do the vets, but I don't like the reality of over population either. We just took a little one from a mom who could not or would not feed her babies - the other 2 siblings died. Next night, young tame mother brought to animal control in distress and bleeding - 3 dead kittens inside of her. I trapped a feral cat once, who looked so pregnant to me - just HUGE - but with runny eyes, horrible neighborhood, outside in freezing sleet - I could not bring myself to spay her. Thought for sure she'd have her kittens the next day. THREE WEEKS LATER she gave birth - joke was on me! 2 great kittens, 2 not so great - 5 yrs later still have one of those kittens who strikes me as border-line autistic. I love him dearly, but who else will? But if you decide to NOT spay her, please ask a good vet if she should be de-wormed or vaccinated. I can never remember these things, but if she needs to wait until after her litter is born, no big deal. --- Melissa Lind [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Terrie, I agree with Nina. Also, I know that where I live, trying to find a home for these three fosters will be next to impossible let alone a litter. ABSOLUTELY. that's how i discovered flea-induced anemia years ago, and how i learned that persians are abnormally sensitive to pesticides lost a beautiful blue-cream darling during a really bad flea season because no vet--then or since--had ever told me the latter (this was back in '90?), and i did not, then, recognize the symptoms of anemia. when i talk about hard lessons learned, that's probably the hardest any of my beloveds have taught me. vaccine schedule and mixing negatives and positives
Hi! I rescued Jack about 3 months ago and he is FeLV+ ) I took him from an abusive home with the intention of finding him a wonderful home). I have 6 other cats, Mr.Furley (5yrs), Lucky (1 1/2 yrs), Ralphie, Janet, and Cleo (each 1 yr), and Furby (10 months). Everyone else has been tested for FeLV and is negative. I am unable to continue keeping Jack separated from the others and I have not been able to find him an appropriate home. I went to the holistic veterinarian who recommended vaccinating all - cats against FeLV and allowing them to mix. She said that FeLV is most often transmitted through bites etc. I have read so much info about FeLV being transmitted through saliva (all of my cats are VERY friendly and all groom eachother) and that 2 shots are given then an annual booster is recommended. I guess my questions are as follows: What are your experiences with mixing negatives and positives? Have any of your vaccinated cats contracted the disease? How long after vaccinating do I need to wait before introducing them? (Vet said 48 hours). Any info would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you very much - Be smarter than spam. RE: vaccine schedule and mixing negatives and positives
Lots of folks will respond but as one who mixes, I never even think about it. My oldest positive was not diagnosed until she was 4 or so and by that point all the others (3) had been around her all that time-they all were neg. They had not been vaccinated for FELV but now I vacc yearly. I then took in a second pos-an older stray I had been feeding but did not know he was pos. Tucson is 9 and we think Romeo is around the same age. They eat together, share litter boxes, toys, sleep together; groom each other; and I never really worry about it. Re: Can fleas cause anemia in adult cats?
How many fleas does there need to be to cause anemia? I don't think Tomi could have very many fleas, since I can't find alot of flea droppings (and I haven't found any actual fleas yet). I'm just wondering how I could treat the fleas while he's in such a weakened state. Wouldn't flea collars, chemicals etc be too hard on him right now? I couldn't even imagine giving him a flea bath...that would be about as much stress as I could possibly put him through. Re: Can fleas cause anemia in adult cats?
Yes, fleas can cause anemia. Scratching is a sign of fleas. Also dots under the chin, lip, and the tail can be Feline Acne. Do you use plastic bowls for feeding and water? Plastic will cause the black spots (Feline Acne) if they don't rub off right away. Use ceramic or glass dishes if possible. From what I read, fleas usually only cause anemia in young kittens and elderly cats. That is not true. This will suppress the immune system when there are other illnesses such as Felv. I've seen cats and dogs at all ages have anemia due to fleas especially in shelter situations. Re: Can fleas cause anemia in adult cats?
I am hoping that dealing with the fleas will help your baby!!! :) Wendy --- Marylyn [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Find a lice comb and go thru his hair with it. This should disturb the fleas. You can pick them up with a wet q-tip too and drown them (sorry fleas, it is you or the cat). It only takes a bite or two to give Dixie hotspots that require medical attention. This is going to depend on the cat. Also was any bedding etc in very hot water. Fleas don't bother me and keeping up with Dixie v Fleas is difficult. They may or may not be the cause of Tomi's problems but they sure can contribute to they. ABSOLUTELY. that's how i discovered flea-induced anemia years ago, and how i learned that persians are abnormally sensitive to pesticides lost a beautiful blue-cream darling during a really bad flea season because no vet--then or since--had ever told me the latter (this was back in '90?), and i did not, then, recognize the symptoms of anemia. when i talk about hard lessons learned, that's probably the hardest any of my beloveds have taught me. Cassandra -- Spay Neuter Your Neighbors! Re: Can fleas cause anemia in adult cats?
Go buy a flea comb they are very cheap at any store. Of course there some that look like a very fine comb with handles. It depends on what you want to purchase. Run the comb through the kitty's fur. You will see more black stuff (Flea Dirt) hopefully catch the critter or two. When you get one on the flea comb rinse it off in water or use a set of tweezers and squash it. You gotta kill it if anything squeeze it with your fingernails. It only takes a flea or two to start the anemia especially with a weak immune system. In a message dated 4/14/2007 8:28:28 P.M. Re: A couple of pictures I took of Tomi today
Cassandra, Tomi is gorgeous!!! What a beautiful face! The good thing for Tomi, but bad for the fleas, is that he's light colored. You can see the fleas really easily in light fur. :) Wendy --- C J [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I took these pictures today of my little Tomi boy: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v43/Fyrwulf/DSCF0053.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v43/Fyrwulf/DSCF0037.jpg And here is an older pic of Tomi and Kisa (my other Felv baby) together: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v43/Fyrwulf/TomiKisa.jpg Cassandra Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world: Indeed it is the only thing that ever has! ~~~ Margaret Meade ~~~ __ Do You Yahoo!?
