Re: [Finale] Lyric window does not show entire lyric

Sure. Instead of laying the words out as in a poem. Turn it into a paragraph.
At the very least it prevents one from bumping into the end of the box. For me,
as one who wrote his own libretto, changing words and order and meaning is a
constant battle and I have battled the box end a fair bit.

Other then starting a new verse and divvy the lyric, you can try and collapse
the stanza count (lines of words). It gets to be a real pain if you keep trying

I just did a quick web-search using the term "bucket drumming notation"
and got a lot of hits, some of which were simply selling stuff, but
there were a couple of results which actually showed some bucket
drumming notation.

I'm not sure there's a standard yet for this, but one example was a
youtube video of a song that showed its notation:

The notation seemed perfectly clear to me -- each staff had a clear
notation for which part of the bucket was supposed to be hit.

There are online groups you can join to get more information, such as:
  -- I don't know anything about it
since at this point I'm not interested in the subject, but I think you
could find information there.

As with any new aspect of music and notation I think that what's most
important is that the music make very clear at the top of the score and
each part what the notation means.

I’m on a lifelong quest to become a better orchestrator. For classical

I know many of you are fine orchestrators in a variety of idioms or engrave

One (just one, not really very important) of the reasons why

of people (in Italy also) who believe that placing a quintuplet inside a

just a big nonsense, a bluff.
And bluffs don't last long, unless you have a big, big deal behind you -

I’m a little out over my skis here, but I imagine there are folks out there in
Finale-List land who’ve had experience with this kind of things…  I’m doing a
project for a friend where I’ve been given .mid “String” tracks that I’m going
to turn into parts that can be played by real human beings.  The MIDI-to-Finale
dump was pretty seamless, but now I need to wrangle the staves that the MIDI
conversion process gave me into a real score with real, playable parts.

One of the biggest issues, of course, is the note spelling.  The piece is more
or less in A Major and related keys, but every note that should be a G# came
out of the MIDI as an Ab.  Ditto for Db/C#.  I can see that alone wasting lots
of time, so here’s my question…

Is there a way I can globally change every Ab to a G# and every Db to a C#?
I’m hoping the answer is yes!

Thanks!

[Finale] FIN/MAC weird behaviour

2019-02-06 Thread GERALD BERG
Hi all
Something weird is in my recent working Finale files. I open the file and go
for playback and playback defaults forward to measure 174.
Thing of it is, the length of the piece is irrelevant. The piece could be
shorter but still it tries to start at measure 174!
A simple fix in the I expand the playback module and futts with the measure
playback controls.  I cannot dial measure 1 in at the upper left playback
measure timer because the default is set at ms.174.
Any ideas?
FINMAC 25.5
thank you

Here are some observations about each of the plug-in examples.  Let me
stipulate that the Finale plug-ins might provide some unusual visual
results that aren't directly matched by Dorico, so I am not claiming
equivalence on any of these.

1. Copy arbitrary material regardless of barlines, etc.  This is
inherent in Dorico, and I think you would find this far more productive
in Dorico.  Dorico does not provide any drag-and-drop, but the cut and
paste model is extremely powerful.  It even allows 1-to-many pasting,
and pasting to discontinuous staffs and so on.  Also there is a very
powerful capability where you can select any material, press "R" and it
automatically duplicates the material placing it immediately to the
right of the selection, which still expressing everything correctly with
no touch-up required.

2. Mass relink.  This is inherent in Dorico.  Moreover, Dorico seems to
make better assumptions about when to automatically reflect score
changes in parts and vice versa.

3. Autocreate MM rests.  This is always automatic.  You never "create"
any MM rests.  It is inherent. There are some options for visual appearance.

4. Multiple sets of not spacings.  I am not aware of anything line this
in Dorico.  Of course you can edit the parts directly to apply any
spacing you need.

5. Designate certain text as titles. There is only "text" and "system
text" in Dorico.  There is no hierarchy of text objects, such as an
outline mode in a word processor.  However, you have a great deal of
control over the formatting of any text object and you can freely copy
and reuse any of your text items.  So if you have a text object
formatted as a "title", you can copy that anywhere else you need a
similar title to appear.  Moreover, Dorico has a higher level of
abstraction for these situations.  Your file can consist of multiple
"flows", which are like movements. And each flow can have a title, with
options how and when to display those titles.

6. Mass align hairpins.  There is no mass alignment, but if you have a
4-bar passage, you can enter the dynamic as "F" and Dorico will
enter that dynamic as a group that is all aligned.  And if you copy that
group to other staves, they will be aligned (taking in to account the
collisions).  So if you enter it properly, you never need to go back and
fix it.  Dorico moves the groups around (maintaining the alignment) as
needed even if the music changes to create a new collision.

7. Various fixes.  Most of these situations just don't happen in
Dorico.  And you have complete control over the rhythmic position and
length of every object, so anything like this is very easy to fix.

8. Movements.  See 5 above.  it is far more elegant than in Finale.  And
flows have other uses.  I often keep extra flows in my score as
scratchpads or two different versions of a harmonization until I am sure
I have it right.  I just did a big band chart that has a 16-bar a
cappella fugue in 4 voices.  That was very tedious as I am not a fugue
person, so I created a separate flow just for those 16 bars.  That
16-bar flow was reduced to only 4 players plus a chord playback staff so
I could get all the counterpoint working.  Once that was right, I coped
those 16 bars to the main flow and expanded the voices to let that
section build over the 16 bars.  This is all very straightforward under
Dorico.  You can certainly do something like that with Finale
programming a view, but I'd probably put the scratchpad in a completely
separate MUSX file.  Either way works, but it is much faster in Dorico
because all of the above is just a few mouse clicks in setup mode.

9 Transfer page payout.  There is no template capability in Dorico,
which is a bit of a weakness. However, if you have a score set up the
way you like it, you can easily copy that and use that as the basis for
your new project. And you can do that after the fact by exporting your
flow(s) from one score and importing the flow(s) into the score that has
the layout your want.  And as far as parts go, Dorico has a "master
page" structure where you can develop a master page that can be used by
any number of parts.  This area of Dorico is rather complicated, but
looks very powerful.  I haven't used it much.

10.  TG Tools.  No questions on this one.

11. Proportionately scale staffs.  I don't know about this.  There are
lots of options in Dorico for this kind of thing, but I don't know that
any of them do what you want here.

12. Modeless plug-in problem.  I don't know about that.  There aren't
any plugins in Dorico.  You can, however, do hot key assignments for any
of hundreds of commands. And there are folks who are using the "Stream
Deck" keypad to really boost their productivity.  I haven't done that
yet.  That's not a direct replacement for plug-ins, but enables a

When I've opened old files and encountered this situation I've had pretty
good luck moving all the dynamics from the miscellaneous category to the
dynamics category.  Make sure the dynamics positioning is what you want,
and you may have to "reset to category" all the expressions you moved and
possibly select those expressions in the score and hit "clear," which
resets to default category positioning.

Good luck!

Like many software publishers these days, FinaleMusic expects people to
download their products.  But for those who would rather install from an
installation disk they offer those installations disks at an extra
charge.  The only thing you get are the installation disks, which most
likely won't include the latest updates so you'll still need to update
the software once you install it.

To save even more money, FinaleMusic includes both Windows and Mac
installation disks in the same set, so the poor underpaid shipping
clerks don't have to pay attention to what they're grabbing, packing and
shipping.

Very clever Robert! Thx. GJB

  From: Robert Patterson
 To: finale

Subject: Re: [Finale] Things to be done in the middle of a bar.

For both time sigs in one hand you choose which actual meter you want (4/8
or 12/16) then select "show as" to create a double key signature. Or at
least that's one way. Another is to add the second time sig as expressions.

On a number of occasions I have done something similar to your 4/4 in one
part and 3/8 in the other. That's actually fairly easy. You create the 3/8
as "12/8 show as 3/8". Then add the extra barlines as expressions in the
"3/8" part. With barlines only occasionally lining up as well you really
have to start looking at each case as its own challenge to decide the best
workaround for that case.

To add a time or key sig in the middle of the bar, you have to create two
bars. Let's say it changes in the middle of a 4/4 bar. To accomplish this
you

1. Replace the 4/4 bar with 2 "2/4 show as 4/4" bars.
2. Using Measure Attributes dlg, change the barline of the first bar to
either Nothing or a double bar, depending on the manuscript.
3, In the second bar uncheck "Include in Measure Numbering".

That's all there is to it. It may not be how you'd do it in manuscript, but
it isn't particularly tedious. And it works exactly as you would wish it to.

that some of the pages don't fit the size of the paper in the printer.
Pretty sure it's a Finale issues, not a printer interface, because I get
the same error message even if I try to generate a .pdf with no printer
selected.

The Page Size settings in the Page Layout menu look right - Tabloid Width
11 Length 17.

Is there some other setting that could be interfering? Any advice,
recommendations?

Many thanks, and best regards,

Mike

[Finale] Notes from The Balcony

2017-06-14 Thread GERALD BERG
Hello all
I am just wanted to share these instrumental recordings of a piano duo
transcription of my opera based on Jean Genet's The Balcony.
These 2 are from Act 1- Scenes 1 and 3.  It took a while to pull together
(having to buy the uprights and all). ;)  We rehearsed, seasonally and with
sundry vicissitudes, a couple of years to get it done.

I know how to do it on a Mac. From inside Preview you hit Print, then in the
print dialogue you choose the size of paper you want (assuming the paper is
loaded in the printer!) Hit return and it is supposed to work.

From an improv vamping POV it proves convenient, and that may well be all that
is required. But I can't see calling the 6th degree of a minor scale - Bb here
- a #5 in any theory book.
Playing the chords in context it sounds like what it is: a minor 6th.
Alone it sounds like Bb/D b5.
Thanks for the example! Well found.

Another since-v.1 user here. Prior to that, I tried using MOTU Professional
Composer. I still have a score that used MOTU for notes only, and I drew in
slurs, dynamics, articulations by hand (which I was OK with because I’m of the
generation that had a Pelikan fountain pen with a music nib, a set of raised
rulers, and an electric eraser). I amuse my students by telling them that when
I moved to from LA to NYC in 1979 to start a doctorate program, one could still
find employment in downtown LA or midtown NYC in a room full of music scribes,
all with pen and ink, dutifully writing out scores and parts for shows, bands,
commercials, and the few composers who were getting big orchestral
performances. We used to get our onion-skin paper and bring in the finished
scores for blue-print printing at Circle Blue Print in NYC, Alpheus (which
became Judy Green Music) in LA. Judy Green also had all the best paper and
pencils (with double-sized erasers) and general supplies (pens, nibs, ink,
special rulers).

Then Finale! Did v.1 come out in 1988? Even on a Mac Plus, (files on one
floppy, programs on the other — remember the repeated disk swapping?), and pre
smart shapes (when you had to generate each slur as an independent graphic),
and tiny computer screens, it was worth the effort — if only because fixing
mistakes was faster, and, with enough fussing, you could get something that
actually looked pretty good!  I think it was finally around the mid 1990s that
Finale became faster than doing it by hand.

I hear you about your rest issue. It is a real problem, especially in piano

passage to another, heck, even from one bar to another!

My way of dealing with that was to use the usual layer offsets (+6 for stems
up, -6 for stems down) as a baseline default and adjust individual rests on an
as-needed basis. The Move Rests plugin is useful for large swathes of similar
adjustments, but it doesn’t differentiate between different rest values, which
is what I think you need. Have you looked into JW Change? That might have
something that will help. I found nothing in TG Tools Pro.

I was going to suggest that maybe rest alterations could be copied from one
measure to another the way stem and notehead alterations can, but I see no way
to do that.

Finale 2008:

I wanted to print out empty staves. So I defined a staff style where
under Items to display EVERYTHING is unticked. Applied it to the whole
page. But I still have rests, clefs, bar-lines, and time signature!

What am I doing wrong?

How can I get of everything except the staff lines?

Thanks.

Re: [Finale] Problem converting older file (1999)

2016-02-18 Thread GERALD BERG
My last FINMAC version was 2005 before 2014.  I first updated my older files to
2005 then went again to 2014 - a 2 stage solution.  That went OK.  I opened
one again in 2014.5 and that went horrible.  So bad I shut it down and not
looked at 2014.5 since. GJB

Subject: [Finale] Problem converting older file (1999)

Friends,
REcently I’ve been trying to bring some older files from the last century
(1999; what version of Finale would _that_ have been?) up to date for second
editions. Although FinMac 2012c has done a pretty good job, there have been
several glitches. The most annoying: all the half-note rests in the documents
have been replaced with (bb) (two flat signs in parenthesis. I have tried
reentry of course, but that didnt help. The character mapping seems to have
changed between (what was probably) Petrucci and Maestro. Any suggestions as to
how I should deal with this, that is, replace the (bb)s with half-rests?
Thanks for any and all thoughts on this!

I don't see any easy way, but the workaround I've found isn't too onerous:
1) in the repeat tool duplicate the D.S. al Fine instruction and edit
the font to be hidden.
2) select this new hidden D.S. al Fine in the repeat tool and set the
target measure number to be the start of the 2nd ending.

This worked in my short 3 measure example so I see no reason why it
shouldn't work for you in a more major piece.

Re: [Finale] Line

2015-07-02 Thread GERALD BERG
Those fast 16th note passages are faster than the tempo would indicate.  Nor do
they seem as fast as 32nd notes.  I always took that sort of  'feel' to be 16th
notes at the quarter note triplet level. At least that has give to swing.  I
would assume the brackets indicate an 'out of time' element at the notation
level. Other times I'm not so sure.

excellent term for this; he calls it rhythmic authority. It means the player
may not be putting rhythms down exactly according to the metronome, but he
knows (and we can hear) exactly what his relationship to the ground pulse is. I
had never heard it expressed so specifically before, and I use it all the time
now.

I thought at first the brackets might be a pedal marking, but no, it was only a
coincidence at first. It seems that it might be an indication where Bill goes
from separately articulated notes to a more legato phrasing. Perhaps any other
writer would put a slur over the phrase. There is so much needless stuff in
this notation that I would question the very need to indicate some of what he
notated.

The way you describe is the way I have mine set up.  You set the MIDI/AUDIO -
Device Setup to the MDID channel that has the piano sound assigned to it (not
Smart MIDI).  I think that will work the way you prefer.  Sometimes, when you
change pitch in a staff with Speedy from a note that has been already entered,
the sound of that staff will play, but mostly I think this works the way you’d
like it.  Hope I understood the question and that this helps.

Re: [Finale] getting JABB brass mutes to work in playback

Subject: [Finale] getting JABB brass mutes to work in playback

Hi everyone,

This has not worked for me in 2014 Mac and I finally called MM for a solution.
This is what they said:

Edit each expression’s playback dialog.  For Cup Mute, choose “dump”from the
“type” menu and enter these numbers in the boxes that appear in descending
order: 3, 144, 4 and 127.  What I infer from that is that 3 chooses JABB, I
don’t know what 144 does, 4 is the Key Switch, and the 127 is another mystery.
When you close this playback editing dialog and reopen it, some of the numbers
will look different (dollar signs appear!?), but MM says that’s normal.  You
apply the same process for other mutes substituting the correct Key Switch
numbers: 2 for Straight Mute; 5 for Harmon; 7 for Bucket Mute; and 0 for Open.
There’s another procedure for Plunger - you choose “controller” instead of
“dump” and then type in 16 in the window that opens.

I have done this but have yet to try it.  I saved the expression library, and
if this works, I will apply it wherever I need it.

I am sending this in case it might be useful to others.

Chuck

Hi Ryan,

I asked the same question a little while ago – no one who saw the request
at the time answered with exception of Gippo Mercoli who wrote:

In finale, with Garritan or midi I can't imagine other way: open a drum
track and process a single tom or bass drum shot.

If anyone who didn't see the question then or has had time to think about
has a better suggestion, please describe! I tried this suggestion above –
unsatisfactory.

Also, if anyone has *good* suggestions for virtual instruments other than
the bundled Garritan for guitar, I'd be into hearing about that – the
Garritan sounds aren't good enough for a client. Thanks!

Is there a Garritan sound that could pass for a knock or a tap on a string
 instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass)?

I could replace with a percussion instrument, but was hoping to find
 something more accurate.

 Thanks!

The best solution is to enter the lyrics for each voice as different

you're sure it won't affect the others. Also, NEVER use the same lyrics

Barbara,

I had this problem months ago - before the update of 2014.  I wish I could be
sure I remember how it was resolved.  What I think I remember was that it was a
result of corrupted preferences.  I suggest deleting the current preference
file.  I hope you keep copies when you create your preference files.

This is a serious bug, if it cannot be easily resolved.  I have not had the
problem appear within the last few months of work.

I've never had this kind of crash, but no matter. It could happen.

I save *incremental numbered versions* at every point where recreating all my
work is going to be more trouble than Save as

Finale files are relatively small compared with disk drive space. A recent
complex client score had numbers [Filename]0001 through [Filename]1487 -- and
took less than 2GB to hold them all. They were saved between 1 and 6 minutes
apart. Incremental saves give me a revert point if I make a serious error and
also protect against losing work due to crashes, cats, or stupidity.

I believe Mac requires some mousing, but on Windows my fingers are trained for
those 18 keystrokes: ALT, F, A, END, LEFT ARRO (x5), BCKSPC (x4), 4 new
digits, ENTER. Incremental file saved, work continues safely.

Hi Gerald,

I recently started using expressions with hidden text to trigger pizz and
arco, and it even works with spacebar/click playback.  It's been very
helpful not waiting for HP to load each time I want to hear how a small
snippet of pizz or arco texture works in a score.

I use voices all the time, especially in the following situations:

 1) Importing MIDI files that have divisis within tracks (MIDI import
doesn't support divisis in layers, only voices)
 2) Entering drum set parts that have stems up/stems down notation on just
a beat or two in a measure, or if I want to keep everything in one layer
so that I can apply an alternate notation staff style and still hear
 playback.
 3) Situations where I want to have a divisi on just a beat or two in a
measure. This happens most frequently in orchestral string staves.
 4) Stem up/stem down divisis where the rests are in common but the notes
are different (only in versions prior to Finale 2014, which is the first
version that lines up common rests between different layers)

I haven't had any problems at all with entering, editing or deleting music
in different voices, and I've become rather adept with the apostrophe key
in Speedy Entry. There's a little indicator in the corner of the Speedy
frame that tells you exactly the voice in which you are working, so it's
 quite easy to use.

Another cool thing about voices is that you can control the vertical
position of rests entered in voice 2 with the cursor position when you
 enter them.

[Finale] Finale window pane problem

2015-01-13 Thread GERALD BERG

Hi all
Updated to latest FINMAC14 version. Now, what was a surmountable problem has
become chronic.  The window pane is cut off on the left side.  If one looks at
bottom left I can see the bar number inset and the right scroll arrow -- the
left scroll arrow is inaccessible.  This lacunae extends into the score area
itself.  Some kind of incompatibility but what?  Any suggestions appreciated.

It use to be (back in FINMAC 2005) that Garritan had two controls -- 1 for
volume and one for force of attack.  I always found with percussion
(membranophones) that it was better to play with force of attack.  I have not
had to go there lately -- so cannot vouchsafe further on the matter.   I use to
notate my drum rolls in full for playback and increase the attack level
throughout to get a reasonable sounding cresc.

Now I know the (ugly) truth! For a half-decent playback I just may have to copy

I believe the problem lies in the fact that the two different sample
sets were not recorded at the same volume level.  Apparently the
pizzicatos were recorded much louder than the arcos, so at the same
indicated dynamic level in your score they won't sound at the same volume.

This is my biggest gripe about all the sample sets I've listened to (and
most that I've purchased, alas!) -- the designers of the sample sets
don't take the extra time to ensure that all the samples which pertain
to the same instrument sound at the same volume level when played by a
midi program at the same dynamic level.

One solution is horribly painful in Finale -- it requires you to dig
into the midi editing capabilities (sort of like watching sausage being
made -- it's ugly, it's messy and it will turn you off ever wanting to
do it again) and adjust the velocity and/or the volume for each note
that you are unhappy with what you're hearing.

One would think that it would be simpler than that, but it's not, from
 my experience.

And I think the reason you received no responses to your first query is
that nobody has an answer for you -- at least not one that's easy to
accomplish and won't take many hours/days to get things right with.

I hope I'm wrong, but Raymond's reply indicates I may not be.  I gave up
worrying about such things long ago -- what's left of my sanity was too
 valuable to me.  :-)

 Good luck!

Hi Folks,

I always save Finale files to the same folder.  When I want to open a file
from within Finale all my files are listed.

However, when I use Window Explorer to open the folder not all the files
are there.  In particular, no files from the last month or so are there,
although there are others missing from the list too.  I can open all these
files from within Finale with no problem.

It's as though there is some kind of filter on my WE file list but to the
best of my knowledge I have never setup such a filter nor can I find any.

Has anybody any ideas please?

Cheers,

Thanks David,

Been there, done that etc.  I've also tried creating a new folder and
adding files to that - all of them are visible in Finale and can be opened,
none of them are visible in WE.

I've tried changing the options in WE and that makes no difference.

I'm really at a loss to find an explanation.

Although I can open the files from within Finale, the problem came to light
when I needed to move some recent files to a USB stick in order to work on
them on my laptop.  I finished up having to open Finale, open the files,
Save As etc etc which took about twenty times as long as simply dragging
them in WE.

I'd be grateful for anything to try!

Cheers,

Lawrence

Are you keeping Windows Explorer open all the time or re-starting it
 occasionally?

If you are keeping Windows Explorer open all the time, it doesn't
refresh what files it is showing automatically -- you need to hit F5 to
get it to reread the files and folders it's displaying.

If you have exited Windows Explorer and then restarted Windows Explorer
and you still can't see the files, I've got no explanation.

Not sure if I understand this.  Do you mean the double arrow on the top right
of the window?  That does disappear when maximized window is evoked but if you
tap the top of the screen the menu bar display appears and the double arrow
appears in blue on the menu bar also on top right.  That will allow you to
return the window to normal.

One of the new features of Mac OS Mavericks is menu bars on every monitor.
I suppose I'll eventually get used to it and come to like it, but one of
the negative side effects is that every version of Finale before 2014 has
the problem that if you ever maximize a window on a secondary monitor, you
can never unmaximize it due to the little maximize button disappearing
behind the menu bar that it doesn't know is there.

Thankfully Fin2012 has a menu option to un-maximize, but earlier versions
do not. Right now I am stuck with Fin08 in that I can't display a window
anywhere except the maximized window on the secondary monitor. I tried
creating an iKey shortcut, but iKey apparently does not send the event
directly to the window, opting instead to punch a button that in this case
isn't there. Has anyone else got a better solution? I don't use Fin08 much,
but in a pinch I need to be able to. I suppose I can trash the preferences
and it will stop doing it, but that is cumbersome to do every time I get in
this situation.

Hi Darcy,

No, I thought this was an issue related to Finale not being thefront app, so
I clicked on the Finale icon in the dock - the usual solution for the runaway
playback problem.  I will try this - but perhaps others have found similar
horizontal navigation problems with 2014 (nothing like this ever occurred in
2012) where clicking in the horizontal scroll bar on either side of the
location indicator (don't know what to call that gray thing) results in an
uncontrollable jump beyond one window's worth of territory and then clicking on
the other side results in the same erratic behavior in the other direction,
making it maddeningly difficult to get to any location one window on either
side of the location on which you are working.  Similar behavior also sometimes
happens using the SmartScroll app (a handy app that allows horizontal scrolling
one measure at a time using Command/Option or Command/Control).  In this case,
Finale 2014 jumps two or more measures
instead of one.  If I am remembering this correctly, it happens only after
Finale has been open for a while.

I am working on transcribing and arranging music that requires that both
Preview and Transcribe apps are open at the same time as Finale.  I don't
remember whether I have encountered this when only Finale is open.

Anyway, your ideas are always helpful, so any light you can shed will be
appreciated.  Meanwhile, I'll try the white space menu bar click to see if that
works.

Thank you, Darcy.

MIDI Thru turned off.
It seems that unless MIDI Thru is turned on, the program randomly crashes,
and I usually have to click twice on a measure to bring up the Speedy Entry
frame. This sometimes ends up deleting whatever entries were previously in
the frame.
I really don't want to turn MIDI Thru on because I work in transposed
scores, and the notes that sound when I enter them using a MIDI keyboard in
Speedy sound in concert pitch, which is very confusing to my ear.
Is there a setting somewhere that will enable me to work in Speedy in Finale
2012 with MIDI Thru turned off without the program exhibiting this unstable
behavior?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
-Brian Williams

Hi all

What are people using for a midi interface that works with Mavericks 10.9
(newly updated!)?  Finding something that has up-to-date drivers is eluding my
capabilities.  Only 1 keyboard so small is good.

TIA

Anything by MOTU is great. Their USB interface works flawlessly. I
also have an original 828, FireWire interface from 2002 that they
still support flawlessly on 10.9

Re: [Finale] Union rules on doubling

2014-03-18 Thread GERALD BERG
I remember Steve Reich coming to town  (Toronto) for a performance of Music for
18 Musicians. He spoke before the performance and in his preface he made the
comment that we might well be asking ourselves why we were seeing 20 musicians
on stage.  Yep.  Clarinet and Bass Clarinet was not a permitted double by union
rules.

Thanks Gary, and all who chimed in with what they know.  Very, very
informative.  Exactly what I was looking for.

 Hi J D,

Just to clarify, each AFM Local determines their own rules for doubling for
Live engagements, in other words, any engagement falling within their
jurisdiction. Rules for Electronic media agreements (i.e. film, TV, sound
recording, etc.) are determined at the national level by the AFM Agreement in
which the session would be recorded under.

I would double check with the local in which the gig is taking place, just to
 be sure.

 Hope this helps,

I had a phone conversation with a client earlier today.  And the topic of
doublings came up.  This is going to happen in a live situation, not in the
studio.  He is going to have a situation where the two clarinets are going
to most likely be playing both Bb and A clarinets.  Someone from NYC checked
into it for him and told him that the two clarinets were considered the same
 under union doubling rules.

I am a member of Local 47, Los Angeles, and I told him if a player picks up
another instrument and plays it on a session, it's a double.  Period.  He
argued that this was not the case with classical performances and reiterated
that the two clarinets are considered the same.  I countered that they were
not, and he was getting erroneous information.

I'd like to hear what everyone knows on this issue.  I did many, many
sessions in LA when I lived there for 21 years.  Both live and recorded.
But I will admit my memory is foggy; I've been out of LA for over 13 years.
But I do recall that if a played picks up another axe, it's a double.

Any and all opinions are most welcome.

[Finale] M Audio midisport FIMMAC Maverick

2014-02-25 Thread GERALD BERG
Hi all

I am still crashing and trying to locate the source of the problem.  I have the
latest drivers from the M audio site which stop short of Maverick 10.9 at 10.8
somethings.  Is anyone using them (with my configuration) and not having
problems?

TIA

Hi all,

The old instrument window used to have a droplist with the different
instruments for various layers. Where has that gone in F2014? (My instrument
window is still nearly illegible; Finale support is working on it.)

Thanks,
Dennis

Thanks very much -- I sort of see them now. Unfortunately, I can't read them
when they're dropped down because my score manager looks like this. Support
working on it.
