Re: [Finale] i just want to share one not wanted experience
i am using finale 2006c and let me inform you that it happened again today but luckily i have a backup. what i decided to do now is to save as to a different hard drive every four bars. i am starting to suspect that this odd behavior has to do somehow with the way de document is configured which confuses finale into think that nothing is input gr Don Hart wrote: Is this the "File Overwrite" bug (which I've never experienced) or is this the "Scary" bug which I reported last fall, which indeed, scared me into continuing to use 2005 until about two months ago. I've heard that the bug I reported (along with Darcy and Javier Ruiz) was fixed in, I believe, 2006c. I thought the "File Overwrite" bug occurred when multiple files were open at one time. The "Scary" bug struck (nearly wiped clean) a file I had orchestrated after I deleted the contents of a guide piano part. As far as I could tell, it had nothing to do with the "File Overwrite" bug. I posted a little more about it last fall: I was able to go to the backup copy made when I last saved and was fortunate enough to lose virtually nothing. (because when I first noticed the lost data I made sure I didn't hit command s, and save the problem) I found no way to retrieve the lost data in my original file. The undos I did trying to rectify the problem (immediately after I noticed it) went up to and beyond the point in time the problem occurred and never brought back the stricken data. So, Godofredo, this begs the following questions: which version of 2006 for the mac are you using, and from my limited description of these two bugs, does either seem to describe your problem? I suppose that if you don't have 2006c you should probably download and install that free update. I guess there's also a "d" update addressing some mac-intel issues; that's not a worry for me yet. My understanding is that neither "make backups when saving" NOR "auto save" is the culprit in the file overwrite bug, because every time it bit me I was using neither one. Furthermore, Darcy Argue, who had also gotten this bug, was saved by his auto backup. Dennis B-K had the best advice that I ever got - incremental saves. Save As... add a number to the end of the file name, every ten minutes, twenty minutes, or every hour. So "Name Score.mus" gets saved as "Name Score 01.mus" then 02, 03, etc. If anything ever happens, I have all the older versions to draw on, so all is not lost. Of course, the laws of nature being what they are, I have never once had to use one of my incremental backups. It's kind of like Mob "protection" money. I listened to the first two of them (I'm on Mac) and found -heard- nothing that could be defined as glitches, what I did notice is that in some passages the stressing in the pronunciation of words with s by the sopranos leaves some sort of almost imperceptible trailing behind - like a very subtle phone patch- I hope this can be of some help. godofredo David W. Fenton wrote: Could someone check these MP3s: http://www.dfenton.com/Collegium/Tenebrae/ to tell me if there are problems with them? I know there's a little distortion on them (they are only 192KB MP3s), but it's not obtrusive. I'm only concerned to make sure there are no glitches in the playback. I can't tell for certain myself because my PC seems to have a problem that waveform playing gets mucked up after a period of time using it, and inserts glitches that aren't actually in the source files. When I rewind, the glitches are not there, so I assume the MP3s are actually clean (the same thing happens with the source WAV files, too). I just need to know that my assumption that there actually aren't any glitches in the MP3s is correct, since I can't seem to reliably play them without hearing glitches inserted by my PCs problematic sound subsystem. I have not yet figured out why my PC is doing this. It sometimes comes and goes (I'm listening right now with iTunes, and there's no problem, but with the QuickTime player from the website, the glitches are there, or if I load them from Windows Explorer, in which case they play in Windows Media Player), though occasionally I have to reboot to clean it up. It used to be a problem only with certain WAV players (like the one in Exact Audio Copy), but now seems to have migrated to all waveform players (except, I guess, iTunes). The change seems to have happened around the same time that the wavetable synthesizer on my sound card stopped responding to the Windows volume controls, and that happened after my ill-fated experiment downloading WAV-to-MP3 converters a few weeks ago (I agonized over it publicly here on this list). Right now, I'm just concerned that those MP3s are OK. Thanks for listening! ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

I've had this and other more or less similar problems with my cherished Finale, like not getting any response or coming to a complete halt when there is an 8a or loco indication, and after trying to talk Finale, speaking softly to it's ear, into doing what it is supposed to do or what I need it to do I recur to a workaround I have successfully used with graphic design softwares like Quark Express which is to a) save the document with a completely different name, and if that doesn't work b) quit Finale, open it again, create a new fresh blank document with the same characteristics as the one which is giving me trouble and mass copy everything from it onto the new document, and up until now it works all the time. Re: [Finale] pdf booklets
I do what you want all the time, except that I do it in a larger size but the process is the same. Here is the procedure: prepare what you are going to print in multiples of four, eight, sixteens, etc. even when your documents don't have the exact number of pages, that is, if you have a document with, say, six or seven pages, prepare it as if it had eight, leaving the rest of the pages in blank. In the cases where the document has eight pages , which requires that you print four on each piece of paper ( two on each side) your numbering should be 8-1 on one side and 7-2 on the other side, the second piece of paper should be numbered thus: 6-3 on one side and 4-5 on the other side (left to right on both cases, I clarify this because I don't know if you are from oriental procedence where reading as well as counting is done from right to left) . If you are going to print direct from Finale all you have to do is instruct the program to print according to the instructions given above. I take it you already know how to do this. Now, if you are going to print your booklets from a PDF that's a different story because you need, number one the professional version of acrobat and number two an imposition program which is what is going to instruct Acrobat and the printer on how to distribute the pages according to the needed layout. You can visit Planet PDF where you'll find different imposition programs to suit your needs. Should this explanation be insufficient or not clear enough I will be glad to extend myself in the subject. In the meantime I remain yours, truly. The lowest note I've seen throughout Bach's work is low C, the lowest note of the cello in standard tuning and the lowest note available on the organ keyboard. (This is entirely separate from the question of the original, intended pitch for the Weimar cantatas, which is a very special case.) NYU is about to take delivery of a new violone. I really know not much of anything about it, but I do know that it has a low A string (I don't know if it is 6 strings, A to A or what, or if it's a 7- string instrument). Also, keep in mind that Bach's gamba sonatas assumed a 7-string gamba with a low A string (because two of the three sonatas require low B), so if the violones were an octave below this 7-string instrument, then they'd also have a low A string (regardless of what strings they had above it). ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Re: [Finale] OT! CD Burner question
A workaround to this is as follows: turn both toast and your burner off then turn then back on one after the other, beginning with toast then the burner. This is a hit and miss until you get both synchronized. It worked for me when I was running OS 9.2. Hope this helps. Re: [Finale] FW: EPS-WinXP
Maybe I am too slow, maybe I come from a different world but I do make eps' direct from finale, thus: fileprintcopies pagesoutput optionssave as filepostcript. Is this any, or much different from what you are pursuing? GR dhbailey wrote: Kurt Gnos wrote: I don't understand all the people who don't think they need Finale's EPS output. 1. First of all, it's freely scalable, without quality loss. You find out that your TIFF has not the right size. If you had used an EPS that wouldn't be a problem. half size? double size? 800%? 2. It's smaller than TIFF. And if you scale tiffs you might get ugly results, even at 600 dpi. 3. You can import the EPS into vector graphic programs as Illustrator or Corel Draw and change anything you like. Want a bigger Clef? Notation in the form of a wave? use a magnifying lens? Work with colors? And more and more... 4. Faster. I use a laser printer that is optimized for EPS and PDF output. 5. Professional. Professional printing uses mostly EPS and PDF. PDF is very similar to EPS anyway as I understand it. [snip] I can't argue with your reasons 3, 4, and 5 -- there are lots of people who need those capabilities (I don't find EPS any faster printing than TIFF) and I certainly support them in their desire to get EPS export working properly in Finale. As to 1 and 2, I often import TIFFs into WordPerfect and scale them and they look great when I change size, larger or smaller. Perhaps WordPerfect has a better graphics manipulation routine than the program you are using, but I've never had a problem with the TIFFs I can export from Finale. I export them at a high dpi, though, which might make a difference. As for file size, with hard drives so huge these days, does the difference in size between a TIFF or EPS really matter anymore? ___ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
