[Finale] Map for Maestro font?

2018-01-23 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
Finale 25 on an iMac running High Sierra.
I need the bass clef sign in a text,
Went to the User Manual via the Help menu.
Searched and found the clef map for Maestro, which says Shift-Z for the bass
clef, but out comes a dynamic.
I am sure I overlooked something, but where did I fail?

Re: [Finale] Extraneous note appears inexplicably in organ music playback.

2018-01-07 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
Tedious, but you could make a copy of the file. There you could delete all
notes in the offending bar. Then listen if there is an artifact in the bar. If
not add the notes one by one and listen after each entry, whether something
wrong occurs. If so check if the offending note is a resultant pitch of the
notes entered so far. If everything comes out well, then go on working from
this file. The error then were a one-off corruption in the original entry
process.

If there is an artifact in the bad bar, my first attempt would be about
deleting the whole stack of that bar. Then listen whether the artifact is
rooted in a different bar. If not then insert a new bar and then re-enter the
contents of the stack again. Most certainly not by copying from the original
file.

I am a retired teacher and without knowing any code it has been helpful to me
treating the computer like a kid with learning disabilities: Cut up the process
in its smallest bits and check after each step.

       Thanks for your
suggestion, Christopher.  I thought for a moment
you had it, and kicked myself for not
 checking.  I've just looked again,
 and
 I'm afraid it's not that.
       I
neglected to say in which octave this rogue B appeared, and
 it's
in the lower octave.  The Bb that
ties over is the one almost an octave
 above
Middle C - but the rogue B is definitely an octave below
 that,
 adjacent to Middle C.
Nonetheless, in case the octave was
 deceptive, I used the asterisk
 to show the
accidental to check out what you said - and the higher Bb

definitely is a flat, not a natural.
There is definitely no B or Cb
 anywhere in
that bar.  There is in the following bar (which contains
 the
same chord shifted down a perfect 5th)
 - is it beyond the bounds of
 possibility
that the Cb from there is somehow being shifted a bar or so

 earlier by the Finale playback?
So I'm afraid the matter is still
 unresolved.
       Can it just be a
software or memory glitch or bug that does such a
thing?  Perhaps I just need to delete the
whole bar and do it again from
 scratch, and
 see if it happens again.

Sorry for the first attempt being sent before it was finished!

Just bought FM25 for a new iMac.
Tested a file made in FM2014. It played back, but with the wrong sounds because
I hadn’t installed my 3 Garritan sound libraries yet.
Installed these libraries and of course the Aria Player. After opening Finale
again the test file gave no sound when the playback was started.
I opened the Aria Player and returned to Finale, whereafter I was met by this
message;
The requested virtual instrument plugin could not be found.
What to do?

Re: [Finale] Different type barlines at a specific place

2017-04-16 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
I hope you really need this feature, because I have found a time consuming
manual workaround. I haven‘t done all the necessary adjustments, only proven
the principle in a trio for horns that I am editing. The screen shot from
Finale is here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/52jjkhys6kvini4/Barlines%20between%20staves.png?dl=0

You have to set the line thickness in the Smart Shapes tool (Smart Shape
options( to the same as the thickness of your barlines (document options).
Choose the line option in Smart Shapes that can be drawn vertically. Draw it
between two staves next to a barline. It will default to the closest beat, but
you can drad it on top of the barline between the staves.
In the selection tool click the bar before the barline and make the original
barline invisible.

It might also happen, if one of your alfa-numeric or function keys is sticking.

[Finale] Complex print question from a friend in a time pinch

2016-07-27 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
My friend arranges and conducts for a US-based band camp. He wants a script or
plugin type solution, which I cannot point him to. I even doubt it exists. But
there are people much smarter than me on this list:

Anyone know whether Finale has something like a Print Changes Only setting,
where you can hit Print and only get a new score and the parts that changed
since the last saved version? When in a big hurry I don't like having to go
into the Print dialog and select parts manually. Sometimes you have massive
changes in a number of parts but only one or two small ones in others, which
can be easy to forget in a high pressure situation.

Also, if only small revisions were made to a part so that, say one page was
affected, but the layout of the pages was not, it would be great if Finale
could simply reprint the changed pages automatically rather that having to
manually fish out each page to print. If you have over a hundred pages of parts
and score and you made changes that affect twenty specific pages and none of
the others whatsoever, Print Changes Only would be a huge time saver. This
matters when your players are sitting there waiting for you.

Can Finale be made to do this, or is there a plug-in for such
functionality?(end of quote)

So this is a very annoying bug with no workaround that I can think of…

I am trying to show a 12-tone series on a part for an improvising soloist. I
also want to show a cued bass line in the same measure.

The part is in 4/4 so the 12-tone row is in eighth-note triplets in layer 3.
I want those notes to be stemless. But I want to show the stems on the cued
bass line, in layer 4. So I create the stemless notes the old-fashioned way,
using the Custom Stem Tool and a blank shape, breaking all the triplet beams,
and hiding the triplet numbers and brackets. So far, so good.

The problem comes when it is time to copy this notation to another measure.
When a custom stem has been applied to the first triplet in the measure,
copying it causes the triplet to be deleted and the first three eighth notes
of the 12-tone row come in as regular (non-triplet) eighth notes. (The other
triplets come in correctly — only the first triplet in the measure is
 affected.)

Needless to say, this is a bit of a nightmare. The only workaround I can
think of is leaving the regular stem in place for the first triplet, copying
this notation everywhere I need it (which is many, many places), and then,
once all of the copy operations are complete, going back and applying the
 custom stem measure-by-measure as needed.

Can anyone (A) confirm this bug and (B) think of a better workaround?

[Finale] Keystroke for small natural?

2015-01-25 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
At

http://www.finalemusic.com/UserManuals/Finale2014Mac/Content/Finale/Maestro_Font.htm#IX_Accidentals_4

I cannot understand the keystroke for the small natural. Actually I can’t
even read the sign after the first dash, as the resolution is too low for
my eyes.

But even if I could read that sign, the keystroke looks like a sequence of
two keystrokes. How to apply these?

I would be grateful for a good explanation. I am working on a Beethoven
transcription, which has a small natural in front of a turn. I cannot make
the combined sign into an articulation, but I already have made the similar
combination of a small sharp and a turn into an expression.

My workaround for now is about using the full size natural at point size 16.

it is a 2-key process to get it on a US keyboard

Re: [Finale] GPO

2015-01-24 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
I have the GPO and I like it a lot. The solo strings and the woodwinds are very
good. So are the horns and the tubas. The trumpets and the trombones are not
blending too well as sections. Harps are good, but are relatively loud.

Section string can be on the mushy side rhythmically.

Mostly the professional ranges of instruments are covered, but trumpets are
missing their lowest notes. Tubas are a bit limited in their top ranges.

I also have the band version, but the GPO has way better note attacks.

Re: [Finale] Improving leger line legibility (was Darken staff lines)

2015-01-15 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
I am not sure longer ledger lines are of any benefit.
For me it is way more important that ledger lines are separated from each other
horizontally. If they touch or overlap they are next to impossible to discern
from staff lines. Finale’s default keeps ledger lines separated, but if the
engraver squeezes too many measures into a staff then they will touch or
overlap.

In addition to increasing the default settings for line thickness
(I prefer 0.012 for most thin lines including staff and leger lines,
barlines, repeat endings etc.) have you tried increasing the length of
the bits that stick out to the sides of leger line notes and rests?
(I'm using Windows, F.2014.)

Document / Document Options / Lines and Curves

I have the sideways extensions set to 0.028 (Finale doesn't like that and
changes it to something with more decimal places) for both notes and rests.
It may mean you need to allow extra horizontal space between notes on leger
lines so they don't run into each other and confuse where the staff begins
and ends. I think that's what Klaus was referring to (sorry, couldn't follow
that link).

I am somewhat younger than you, but as my right eyes is rotated 7° compared to

are the first element to loose safe reading.
One aspect of good readability is about setting music with so much horizontal
spacing that ledger lines are not compressed into each other.
And then I use fairly fat lines and even fatter ledger lines. They work for me,
but they are vulnerable if printed by ink printers on bad paper, so that there
is a noticeable bleeding.

I've pretty much abolished the use of should and ought. :)

Changing point size doesn't work with Word Perfect even in

new one, and have now checked.

For the moment I'm going with creating separate text blocks
if I want more than one font / size / style, as I haven't
needed to do anything seriously fiddly yet. I'm guessing that
I might be OK with a font or word processor that didn't

As for Finale switching the text size: Did you paste to a text block where a
text of a given size had been deleted incompletely? Try pasting to a new text
block. If spaces or other invisible elements are left, the formatting stays in
the block.

Use Word or the like to write your text in the formatting
you want. Then copy-paste it into an empty text-block.
 Klaus

That sounded like a good idea. Does it work for you with Word?

I don't use Word, being generally anti-Microsoft but unwilling
to switch allegiance to Mac for Finale. I've just tried doing
what you suggest in (Corel) Word Perfect. No problem in WP,
where I quickly made samples of my Copyright notice in Arial
14/10 point, 13/9 point and 12/8 point. I tried copying and
pasting the smallest. No problem with the process, but Finale
immediately changed it all to 12-point. :(

I might not find this quite so infuriating if I hadn't been
able to do it in Finale fifteen years ago the way I want now.
I feel as if I've just spent a lot of money on something that's
not yet fully fit for purpose.

Might my problems (there are others) be incompatibility between
Windows 8.1 and Finale 2014?

Hello Listers,

I'm having a frustrating time finding (feels like excavating!) the
useful information that allows me to use Finale 2014 in similar ways to
what I've done in the past with 2000c. I'm relieved to find some
positive improvements along the way, but...

...I've just wasted an unacceptable amount of time trying, with some
input - not help - from the on line User Manual, to change the font size
for just one character in a Text block, which has never previously
caused me any problem. In my Copyright notice  I like to have the
C-in-a-circle sign about the same height as the capital letters in the
remainder of the notice. I can highlight just the one character, and
that's what shows up in the edit menu, but when I change the size and
exit the box the change has been applied to the whole text block. :(
The same thing happens if I just try to change the year to bold.

My current time-saving work-around is to create a separate text block
for the Copyright symbol. Ridiculous!! I've given up on the idea of a
bold date (that was just an experiment to see if it was possible).

[Finale] Breath marks should not affect the pulse!

2014-07-21 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
The Make Music folks apparently had listened to something they should not have
listened to before the latest update of F2014!

One thing I liked about the b revision, possibly also the original F2014 was
that I could place breath marks in my mostly for wind players scores with no
effect on the musical pulse when applying Human Playback. That also is the way
I want it when writing for choir and instruments in music, where a steady pulse
is mandatory except for specified tempo changes like fermata, rallentando, or
the likes.

Then a fairly recent thread here complained the lack of hesitation of the
breath marks in choral scores. Really the breath marks were wanted to act as
caesuras.

I want the HP effect turned back, so that it has no effect on the pulse.

But then I also want the choir folks having an option to achieve their desired
effect. So I have a suggestion for a solution:

The hanging comma in the present size should act as a pure breath mark with no
tempo effect. Keyboard shortcut should remain the B.

The choir style caesure could use the hanging comma in a slightly larger size
and then have the hesitating HP effect applied. I will leave the decision about
the keyboard shortcut to Make Music.

Hello Klaus -
Thanks for contacting MakeMusic customer support. I created some quick test
files and I was able to replicate and confirm the behavior. It looks like
Transpose all Key Proportionally isn't properly able to distinguish between
corresponding major and minor key signatures -- if they share the same key
signature this function is treating with the same transposition. Transpose
All Keys Proportionately worked fine in all other cases between both major and
minor keys with different signatures.

This definitely looks like incorrect behavior for this tool, so I've gone
ahead and written this up review by our product management team. Hopefully
this can be scoped and fixed in a future update or release.

In the meantime,
the best workaround would probably be to select Measure X until next key
change under Measure Region, then do each key signature section separately.
It's a little bit more time consuming as you'll have to bring up that Key
Signature dialogue several times, but it should ensure that you get the correct
key signature in place for all measures.

Please feel free to respond to this case if you have any further questions
about this issue.

Just found out of a horrible bug in FM2014a:

When transposing a duet edition for another pair of instruments I realised
that the function of transposing all keys proportionally does not work. The
whole piece ends up in the key of the opening section.

In my actual case the sequence should have been Ab major - F minor - Ab major,
but the whole piece now is in Ab major a sixth below what it should have been

Please correct this as soon as possible.

Klaus

PS about the attached file: The instrumentation may seem weird, but I make
custom versions on demand. Here I could use this version as the basis for
versions in Ab for two tubas with the top line taken down an octave after the
transposition down to
Ab.

It's a script. It's no more complicated than running a FinaleScript,

Re: [Finale] keyboard shortcuts not working in 2014

2014-03-25 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
In a work session a few days ago, but after this thread started, I suddenly
experienced this very problem for the first time, which made me think about
what was different in this specific situation.

Atypically I had started working in a graphic application which allows being
set to a very high usage of memory. I hadn't quit that application.

Restarting and opening FM2014 first solved the problem. For the sake of testing
this gain after reading your posting right after doing some photo editing I
closed the graphical application and Word, so that only my browser was open.
Then I started FM2014 and tested the keyboard shortcut for the flat in the Text
tool. It worked.

My reading of this is that FM2014 prioritizes which parts of the application it
reads into memory, when the access to RAM is limited. Shortcuts apparently have
low priority.

It's still doing it, even if I haven't switched from another program in a
while. Keyboard shortcuts don't seem to work right after creating the text
block, regardless if I've recently switched back from another program.
After I use the menu with the mouse to make the insert or change the
alignment, then the keyboard shortcuts work.

In a trombone section context, where I wanted a long-note chord progression
played normally the 1st time and glissed the second time I kept the original
notes under the added glisses, which played back as wanted.

In your context write a tied E through the empty bars and let the gfliss go
from the beginning of the E to the C.

This is a playback question: if I want to have, say, a violin gliss through a
couple of otherwise empty measures, how on earth do I get Finale to play that
back correctly?

If it's not clear: think of one bar in which the violin plays a top string E,
then glisses upward over the next two bars (in which the notation would simply
be a diagonal line across a blank measure), and in the fourth bar plays a C
above the treble staff.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm on Mac, using Finale 2011 if it matters.

Right click the selected passage and click Select clef

As sort of a courtesy clef indication? Never tried that before, but I might
imagine the road I would suggest:

In the online help facility find the keyboard equivalent for the bass clef in
your given music font, and create the bass clef as an expression.

By means of TGTools create space before the first note of the measure.

Place the bass clef expression manually at the beginning of the given measure.

[Finale] MIDI note numbers for percussion?

2014-01-26 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
Sorry for asking basic questions, but I must do some misreading of the FM2014
percussion map in the online manual.

From Garritan I have the personal orchestra as well as the marching band sound
libraries. I prefer the quality of the GPO sounds, but will accept the band
sounds if nothing else will work.

I have managed to make a very well sounding bass drum line. But I cannot make
the cymbal line work at all. I want the sound of handheld orchestral cymbals
with a long decay, if the note value tells so. Which MIDI note number should I
go for?

Next problem will be tenor drum.  Which MIDI note number should I go for?

The is a tenor drum sound in the band library, but a GPO sound of a side drum
with no snares might be the best. Which MIDI note number should I go for in
this case?

Timpanies and Glockenspiel are so much easier to handle!

Thanks!

Finale is the only program I own that I have ever had to trash preferences
for, and I have owned only Macs since 1990. I don't know why. I also don't
know why recent versions of OSX started to hide the preferences folder,
complicating the trash prefs procedure.

Macs perform routine maintenance at the moment of power up, so the only thing
to remember if you are in the habit of putting your computer to sleep instead
of turning it off, is to reboot it once a week or so. The under the hood
stuff is very rare in my experience (plugging in a new printer or MIDI device
or transferring data from a phone or camera is a breeze!), but between
trashing prefs and messing with the font manager every second week because of
Finale, I am getting good at those two things.

problem and then you have a raw prefs file to reconstruct. I prefer
to drag it to the desktop, restart Finale, and see if that solves it.
If so, then trash the file. If it didn't solve anything, then you can
replace the new prefs with your old file.

Is this a common problem with Mac programs or is it just poor
programming on the part of Finale developers?  I don't recall any of the
Mac users on the Sibelius group ever running into this problem.

I'm a Windows person and am not asking in an attempt to start a platform
war, but my daughter has a Mac, having given up on Windows and my wife
is considering doing the same and I have a genuine concern over whether
such under the hood repair work, common in Windows, is becoming more
 common in OSX.

My daughter is very happy with her MacBookPro only having problems
getting NetFlix to work properly all the time but it's not enough of a
problem to get her to change back to Windows.  But she doesn't do overly
complicated things -- surfs the web, spends time on FaceBook and other
social networking sites and does basic wordprocessing functions.

My wife, on the other hand, does more intricate things, among them is
using Finale on a regular basis and using WordPerfect's page layout
functions (she's constantly frustrated trying to do the same things in
Word), and I just want to know in advance what we may be getting into
(computer maintenance and tech-support) if she makes the switch.

Thank you for any calm non-flaming insights that anybody can offer.

[Finale] Problem with the saving process in FM2014

2014-01-05 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
In my current project I used a FM2012 file as template. Which I have done
before without problems, and I am not aware that I have changed any settings
aside of the destination folder for the asv-files, which had jumped to the
default folder.

I use to save a file after having done a major operation like a transposition.
However now the file is save as a new file with the same name, only a ~ is
entered between the end of the name and the .musx suffix. I didn't notice that
at once so I saved one of these new files resulting in a third file with ~~ in
the same place of the file name.

What have I done wrong?

How to remedy the problem?

PS: My workaround is about doing a Save as, but that takes the extra step of
deleting the original file.

Recently I upgraded from Finale 2003 to 2014. I am having a strange problem

regular eight note as 5 16ths in the time of 4 16ths. Finale is letting me
enter 4 16ths, then, when I click on the tuplet tool, it shows my 4 16ths

Bad spelling, too, by me after a long night of work.

In Finale 2014 on my desktop Mac I enter tuplets in Speedy Entry.

Pressing alt+5 I enter the first sixteenth and the the next ones. If you want a
5/16 tuplet, you have to enter a sixteenth as the first note to tell Finale the
denominator. But you may edit the length of that first note after it has been
entered.

[Finale] FM2014: Missing keyboard shortcuts in text handling

2013-11-06 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
I very often revise staff and group names between various instrumental versions
of hymn scores.

Working on a new edition today I realized that the keyboard shortcuts for
accidentals are no longer there. Going to the Text menu every time is not so
nice. Neither can I control italics from the keyboard.

And then there is an oddity in working with the editing windows. When the text
has been finished, I cannot exit the window by means of any of the enter keys.
And the mouse cursor remains an insertion cursor also above the OK button,
until I have clicked something outside the Finale window.

Not being a code person I don't see any reasons to remove said work
facilitators.

I recycle a lot of text elements from older editions. Opening an older file in
FM2012 in one monitor and copying these elements to the new file opened in
FM2012 on another monitor works perfectly so far.

Re: [Finale] FM2014 won't open all FM2014 or earlier files

2013-11-05 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
I may have found a reason for the problem:

In 2006 I bought the then best Mac Pro desktop, which is still my main
workhorse for all serious work also in Finale. It is fast enough for smooth
playback, redraws sufficiently fast, and with its two video cards it allows me
to run four monitors: one for musical source files, one for tool palettes
(especially the score manager), and two for different views of the score worked
on.

But this Mac Pro cannot run any system newer than OS X 10.7.5. And it has a
quite slow start up, so I only use it for when I plan on longer work sessions.

Much of my musical proofreading happens in my head while I do other things.
When I get in doubt about what I wrote then I open the files for a look on my
newer Mac Book Pro (runs the newest system) to which I do back-ups via my LAN.

I tried opening a large and complex (for me) FM2012 file in FM2014 on the Mac
Book, and that worked all fine. I opened that converted file on my older
desktop.

When I opened via LAN from the laptop disk it looked all fine, except that the
File Manager looked like the Garritan Personal Orchestra sounds had not been
set. Playback however was all fine with the right sounds.

I then transferred the converted file back to the disk of the desktop Mac and
opened it from there. Same result, but for one oddity:

The timpani line had blocks of grey artifacts at the bottom of the stave and
just below. That part has a lot of rolls notated with the 3 fat strokes tremolo
articulation. I could see that the grey blots actually are the very small
single note values of the rolls being tightly compressed. I tried printing the
file to .pdf and the artifacts do not print to .pdf. Still they look ugly in
the Finale window.

You likely haven't tested every Finale aspect with older systems, but as 10.7.5
has the main features to run FM2014, it would be nice if the problems with the
non-opening FM2012 files and with the said artifacts would be correct in an
update.

[Finale] Minor graphical problems in FM2014

2013-11-05 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
One is related to the non-opening of FM2014 files:

A small grey box appears telling that conversion is needed and from which
version the conversion is assumed to happen (it doesn't actually happen). When
I OK the warning windows about the non-opening, then the grey
conversion-reporting box stay on one of the monitors until I quit FM2014. That
will be a PITA when I start working full tilt with a new project needing
unharmed visibility on all monitors.

The other problem likely is about doing some changes to some settings, but it
hasn't come up before, so I don't know what to do:

All notes beyond a quite narrow amateur range in brass staves plus the low G in
a violin stave have their heads browned. That really disturbs my score reading.

Re: [Finale] Unwanted Doubled Note One Octave Above

2013-10-25 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
I use an Oxygen midi-controller for Finale work. It doesn't have a double stop
facility. My idea came from my Roland electronic church organ, which has 10 or
so stops to be combined. I never used it for note entry.

But then your problem actually was keyboard related.

Finale creates octave passages from the transposition facility, if you checK
Keep original pitches (or something to that effect).

But your temporary file has to have the same setup as that of the score
-- no matter what you call it, the place you initially paste the
contents from one score has to equal the setup of the place you are
copying from.

Of course you can then do any edits you want in the temporary file and
the copy to the final destination, but that fill will have to be the
same setup as the temporary file.

Re: [Finale] Are the free (bundled) Garritan sounds the same as the GPO and Concert Band sounds?

2013-05-15 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
I don't have the JBB library, but the GPO and the band versions. The band
version has light versions of some instruments, which are recommended if the
computer is short of memory. The GPO comes with a light version of choir sounds.

I suspect some of the sounds coming with Finale being the light versions, but
others worked pretty well for me before I got the GPO. The bowed low strings
come to mind.

Playing bassbone myself I also have found the Finale bassbone sound very harsh.
But then I also have found recorded bassbones much brighter than what I heard
from my own instruments. A dark bass trombone tends to drown in the mix.

My worst problem right now is that the band library sounds are way too quiet to
mix with the GPO sounds. Sad as GPO brass sounds are way better than their band
library equivalents.

I have the Garritan JBB library, and of course the basic library that
comes with Finale 2012.

I am getting better at making the playback sound halfway authentic for
big bands.  So yesterday I decided to work on a trombone quartet piece.
For this, I used the bundled sounds: the three solo tenor trombones and
the solo bass trombone.  The tenor trombones sound so-so, but the bass
trombone sounds really coarse and thin-bodied. I hope I don't usually
sound like that on bass trombone.

My question is whether these free bundled instruments are considered
full function sounds or are they intentionally a lower quality than
those you purchase separately.  And similarly, should I expect the GPO
library to sound better than the bundled sounds, instrument for instrument?

[Finale] Garritan band library

2013-04-24 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
Bought the Garritan Personal Orchestra some months ago. The better depth and
more richness in details compared to the fewer sound samples coming with FM2012
have pleased me and been helpful in my work.

Now I wanted to do a brass band version of a recent project, where it would
have been of benefit to work with cornet sounds over the GPO trumpets. Also to
have access to the alto/tenor horn sounds over the orchestral horn sounds. Same
for a greater variety of baritone, euphonium, and tuba sounds.

So I listened to the sound samples on the makemusic site. And I was deeply
disappointed by the artificial, glassy, orchestrion quality of the soundscape.

Do I have a wose than usual ear-day, or have others had similar experiences?

Is the band library being in version 2 over the GPO being in version 4 a hint

One bad point about the sound samples at the MM site is that there is no brass

First play back of the opening revealed a marked difference by using cornet

There are a few points I might raise here:
1. Brasses are difficult to sample due to the complex overtones.
2. Homogeneous ensembles such as brass bands create problems as well.
3. The overtone situation Klaus describes can be adjusted via EQ. Go into the
ARIA player and cut or boost frequencies to taste.
4. I find the base velocity in Finale's HP to be too low, yielding mushy
attacks for brasses. Try increasing the base velocity to taste.
5.it is imperative to avoid simultaneous attacks. HP does that to some extent,
but I haven't taken the time to determine how much.
6. Use reverb judiciously, avoiding extremes of wet and dry.
7.try panning similar tone colors on opposite sides of the stereo field if
musically logical
8. Try automating reverb or EQ as a function of an instrument's dynamics or
prominence
9. All the above would be MUCH easier if Finale's MIDI tool were easier to
use. Right now it's a pain.
10. Don't expect anything just using the sounds out of the box
11. Not even the $5K libraries will do a great job of reproducing a brass band.

i had also edited a different text (with enclosure) and now it has
been replaced by another expression from the same category in 2
different places in the score.

anyone ever see anything like this?  i had some weirdness long ago
(staff group names being replaced with text expressions and
vice-versa) that was due to TGTools reset staff groups but haven't
used that in a very long time.

Re: [Finale] Different meters in different systems

2013-02-03 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
There apparently is no work-around at the root level for Finale storing the
music in databases of measures.

But there are these amazing guys making plugins, where Jari is the one I am
most aware of. Could one of them they make a cosmetic overlay at staff level,
where the time signatures not congruent with the basic measure structure would
be what was ending up in the print file? Hopefully with options for good
spacing and alignment across the various time signatures.

Thanks David.
I was afraid that was the way it was.  I would have had to make the time
signature 840/8 to make all the meters in the choir part line up with the
organ, and that would effectively have made the whole piece one big measure.
All in all, my kludge of creating a 3/4 event and dragging and dropping it
leaving no extra rests in the score was probably the best thing to do.

As I read you this could be systemized in a plugin.

Said by somebody not writing one line of code since 1967.

You could also set the time sig to 1/4, allow each staff to show
independent time singatures and independent barlines, chose time signature
for display only, and hide barlines where needed.

 Finale 2012 MAC

I used to know how to do this when I was using 2010.

I have been sent a big score with all the instruments in concert pitch.
The client wants them transposed (the usual...horn, clarinet, etc.)

In 2010 I could open the staff dialog box and ask that the part be
 transposed, and in what way.

Now I can't find any way to do that in an existing score. HELP!

 And thanks!
