- Original Message - From: Will Denayer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: finale@shsu.edu Sent: Tuesday, November 28, 2006 4:25 PM Subject: [Finale] Error message and simple entry message Hello All, I would like to ask two things. First, something happened which really scares me. I wrote a little exercise some days ago. When I tried to open it this morning, I got the following message: ' C:/Documents and Settings/Will/Desktop/MUS/ex21.MUS appears to be corrput; attempting to continue, but resulting document may be unstable. Data error (cyclic redundancy check).' I cannot open this ex.21 anymore. I do not care about this exercise, but I have one file which is serious work and I would absolutely hate to lose it. What can I do? Is there a way to protect myself this from happening? Do I need to make backups and store them somewhere else? How do you anticipate such things? Second, I am writing a piece (on three staves). For the moment it is in 4/4 all the way. It's basically a double canon. Suppose that I want to interrupt the flow at some point. I would like the whole texture to go forward three beats, so that I can write something else there. Is there an easy way of doing this (in simple entry)? Thank you for reading and with best regards, Will (Finale 2007 and Windows XP) The first things I would do would be making frequent backups of your works on another harddisk or on CD/DVD and not saving your works in C:\ drive which is the one who hosts the whole operative system. C: is frequently rewritten by Windows tasks and should host only the operative system and applications that absolutely require to be installed in that partition (this depends on installation requirements). That is to avoid that, in case of C: crash, you can install back the OS without losing your works. (The better thuing would be to make an image of a working C: partition on a DVD, so even you have to format C:, after you can simply copy your image on C: without losing your settings). This obviously works if you have previously created a dedicated partition of your hard disk for the operative system (which has to be C:) and then one or more partitions to store programs and works. A program like Partition Magic could help you. ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Re: [Finale] Font chart for Maestro
Unfortunately, Finale does not support Unicode. Write and complain, loudly, or they will never add that functionality. Nice, I bought it for mainly use in Finale, I nearly threw away 30$? Gosh! :( I have been able to work around this by creating the Unicode symbol in a word processor, saving it as a TIFF, then importing it into Finale as a shape expression with embedded graphic. It is a mighty pain in the neck, though, and I can't imagine what I would have done if I had had to do all my lyrics this way, for example. Perhaps Windows keyboards are mapped differently than Mac keyboards, but I have a tilde on my Mac keyboard, far left, right beside the 1 key, hold down shift to get the tilde. In recent versions of Finale you can mix fonts and sizes in text expressions, so I see no obstacle to doing what you want. I have changed all my suffixes so that the flat and sharp are individual characters, not alterations added by the suffix editor, so I can set the font, kerning and baseline as I like. This is only one of many problems with the suffix editor, and the whole task took me almost a week, partly because of the clunky and tiny edit window. Christopher BTW, I have a trick for resizing individual chord symbols without changing every chord in the piece (sometimes you need this for lead sheets when space is tight, as done in the New Real Book). Attach the chord symbol to a hidden rest in another layer, then use the Zoom tool to click the rest and change it's size. This does not happen with the articulation tool. As I said in my explanation, this is because expressions generally affect a MIDI channel, and their effect lasts for longer than the duration of a single note -- a change made by an expression is in effect until it is cancelled by another expression. An articulation applies to one single note in one single layer. So Finale makes different assumptions about how you want to apply expressions and articulations. Now, having said that, you can apply an articulation to notes in multiple layers by using the drag-enclose method. With the articulation tool selected, drag-enclose the notes you want to apply the articulation to, and then select the correct articulation in the dialog box. You'll see that the articulation was applied to any selected notes in all layers. In Fin06, I think you still do need to then drag the artic in the second layer by hand if you don't want it to show up, either by putting it on top of the artic in the first layer, or dragging it off the page. Finale works according to measures. What I suggest is setting the tune in 8/4, but change the time signature to show 3+3+2 in one staff and 5+3 in the other using independent time signatures. Then add in the missing barlines in each staff as expressions. The new version of Finale even comes with auto-positioning barlines as expressions, under Miscellaneous. You may have to open up some extra space to allow for the fake barlines, and your measure numbers will never be correct, but that is a small price to pay. ONce you have put them in in one measure, you can copy them easily to all the other measures, but only BEFORE you put any other expressions into your score (otherwise you copy them too!) You didn't ask, but I would put in fake dotted barlines instead of solid, so that only the solid barlines will show where the barlines align between parts. Dennis B-K is an expert at this; he may chime in with some better or more detailed advice. Re: [Finale] Finale 2000c and 2004a playback mystery
Maybe stupid and useless answer, have you tried to check that in your audiocard the MIDI volume has not lowered to 0? Sometimes it happens to me without any reason (with Finale 2006c for Windows) that when I open any file and start playback I cannot hear anything, I go to audiocard mixer and find out that MIDI fader (and that one only) is turned all way down. You can hear radio broadcasts because they refer to WAV part of your audiocard. My 2 cents. Patsy Moore ha scritto: Hello Listers, Finale has obviously been evolving since I was last here several years ago, but I'm still using mainly 2000c with occasional forays into 2004a which my husband has. Playback worked at first in 2004 and then stopped working there too. The problem isn't a general one on the computer or my headphones as I can hear the BBC radio broadcasts as usual. I use Finale playback mainly for proof-listening, which I'm so much better at than visual proof-reading, so I really miss it. I did find a mysterious instruction in the 2004 manual: Playback Files: All options in the Playback Files group box are only used when a playback file is selected for playback. (If you're playing the Active File, Pre-Scan Music must be selected in Playback Settings.) I can't find anything in either version's Playback Settings that says Pre-Scan Music. There's a little box entitled Use This Note or some such in the place where you set up that position 6 and handclap sound, etc. If you fail to check that box you get results like you are describing. Check your percussion map. I have always thought that since one is editing a drum note like you did, that Finale would naturally assume that you want to use that note but it doesn't. Re: [Finale] Collisions nightmear
I had a really bad experience with voices (hard to select and manage them in speedy entry, impossibile to tie them in consequent measures, really bad playback with trembling sound) so I definitely switched to layers. Mark D Lew ha scritto: I typically use layers, not voices. Even if I only need a second voice for part of the measure, I'll usually use a layer and blank out the rests for the rest of the measure. Mostly that's out of habit, but also because I have a vague sense that layers are more reliable. Or maybe it's only because I'm used to them. In your example, you have a few spots where noteheads a second apart are colliding. I don't understand why that's happening; in my experience Finale handles those correctly The rest of your problems have to do with accidentals in one voice preceding with the previous notes. For those what I would do is temporarily add the voice 2 note in voice 1, with accidental; respace the measure; then undo the change and don't respace. This is a little more work, but it's a sound process that works consistently and well, unlike eyeballing it with the beat chart or adding space with TG Tools. It would be nice if Finale would do this automatically, and it sounds like they're aware of the problem, but in the meantime, that's what I do. mdl ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

[Finale] FinWin 2010 - mistery on corrupted MIDI data
I created a SATB score (4 separate staves) with an expression set to create a playback swing effect at 75%. Then I decided to create a divisi section (same staves, layer 2) where second alto and first tenor sing the same line. When I play back that section, tenor's line plays with swing effect, alto's part plays with even eights! I'm getting crazy about that, should I delete all those measures and rewrite them? It's a real loss of time! I need playback to send the MIDI file as a sample to the singers, so I don't really want that awful effect during playback. I know, I can mute the alto part and let the tenor part active, being the same line, but it is this Finale bug that drives me mad. Why should the user find a trick to get around a software mess? I tried everything, deleted only the divisi line and retyped it, switched to another layer, put another swing effect expression in the starting measure of the divisi section, nothing worked. Anyone encountered the same problem? Thanks Marcello ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
Re: [Finale] {Spam} playback question
A solution could be to create a new expression that sets swing playback to 0 to be put at the beginning of the section where you want normal playback. You can decide to make it visible writing a description like even eights or no swing or invisible letting the field blank. Start playback: eights in bass staff don't play swing, they play even! If I put the same rhythmic pattern in piano staff, eights play swing! These are thing that make me crazy. Brand new score, Human playback set to none, no tempo indications set in the score. I enter some notes here and there, set the quarter to 100 bpm instead of default 120. The sign (comma-shaped) has two meanings. The first is a simple breath mark, which should not change the meter and should steal time from the preceding note, just as you say. But the second is a kind of caesura, or silent tenuto, often inserted just before the final note or final measure of a piece in performance (whether called for or not), and conventionally indicated by a comma, although the double lines (railroad tracks) would be more accurate. Apparently the programmers programmed the second meaning only. No, no, no! The programmers in Finale made the breath mark play the note after which it is placed a shorter duration than printed. In Fin2011, it plays the note 75% of the original length (for example, playing a quarter note as a dotted eighth plus a sixteenth rest) but does not alter the meter. In older Finale versions I believe it played a shorter percentage (50%?), and I always changed mine to 75 or 80 percent. It, just as any articulation in Finale, can be changed - by the user - to any other duration, or made to alter the note's attack or velocity, or made to make no affect whatsoever to the playback. The user can double click on one of the breath marks and the dialogue box will pop up. The user can also copy the breath mark and program different ones with different playback lengths. In addition, an identical comma marking could be made - by the user - as an expression, to which nearly any type of playback function could be assigned. One could have a breath mark change the patch, switch the rhythm to swing, change the transposition, or rotate the tires on your car. (I may have imagined one of those.) Back to Marcello's question - if this is a file of your own creation, Marcello, and breath marks in every voice cause an interruption in the meter, some problem has been introduced in some other way. I have tried, just now, to reproduce that problem and I cannot. I would have noticed the problem before, in any case, as I do a lot of SATB pieces in Finale for my church choir and often put in breath marks ahead of time to save rehearsal time. Here is what I would suggest - first, under the articulation menu, double click on one of the breath marks to see what it's definition is. If it is not an articulation, click it with the selection tool to find out what it is. If redefining it doesn't seem to get anywhere, then I would suggest you highlight the entire offending passage, then under the Edit menu select Clear selected items - then on the items menu: First select none so you don't clear anything you want to keep; then select midi data and articulations, then OK. That will likely clear any playback problems, but you will have to re-enter the breath marks. If you want, Marcello, send me the problem file - tell me in what measures the problem occurs, and I will take a look at it. My 2 cents: I saw tenor parts in bass clef in two staff scores (SA together-TB together) only, while all 4 staff scores I could manage and sing got the treble(8) clef. I personally think that that clef is absolutely unpractical, and should never be used. When I play part summaries in rehearsal (no accompaniment, just al the parts) in rehearsal, it bugs the absolute hell out of me that the tenor part is in treble 8 clef, because I expect to see two staves in treble (soprano, alto) and two in bass (tenor and bass). My question is: WHY is this treble 8 clef used in printed music today when it used to be printed in bass clef most of the time. Re: [Finale] FinWin 2011 - Transposing instruments
Mny thanks! To all, of course Il 03/05/2013 15:27, John Blane ha scritto: Christopher is right, as usual - this is the way to go. Set up a staff style with the transposition set to other and these numbers: interval=2 and Key alter= -9, Apply it to your Alto part when you change to the A major section. I have a score in Db major where a section goes in A major. Applying the trasposition to the alto sax part, the result is Bb major F# major. Is it possible that the section in F# major could be displayed in Gb major? Selecting/deselecting the simplify key leaves things unchanged. Thank you Marcello I know this has been discussed before but I can't recall the exact procedure, but I think it has to do with redefining the transposition for the alto sax staff, from diatonic to chromatic, although I can't remember whether it also involved changing the direction and the number of half-steps to transpose (i.e. moving the part up vs. moving it down), and then doing an octave transposition on the whole part if needed. ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Finale staff names in MIDI tracks
Finale Windows 2011: when I import in a sequencer (Cubase) a MIDI file created in Finale with the save as... function, I don't see the names given to every staff in Finale, so I have to manually create tracks names in Cubase. Staff names are not included in MIDI save as function? Is there a trick to make them visible in Cubase? Anyone experimented this problem and found a clue? [Finale] Finale 2001 Windows - both rhythmic and slash notation in the same measure - why is it not possible
Hi, could be that my brain is tilting, but I remember I could put in a measure both slash and rhythmic notation, why Finale 2011 tells me This style (slash) can only be applied to full measures? I have to fill in a 4/4 bar the first half with two slashes, the second half with one dotted quarter and one eight in rhythmic. How can I do that? Thanks ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Finale 2014 Win - output sound with pops
I have 2011, 2012 and 2014a Finale versions installed on Win7. I have no problems playing files with 2011 and 2012, while I get pops and interruptions of playing in 2014. I tried playing both with default MIDI sounds and with Finale default synthfont, with disabled and enabled Human Playback. Same result. Any hints? Re: [Finale] WinFin 2014b crashes after constant memory allocation
From my side (Win7 32 - 4gb RAM) Finale 2014a takes ages to load the whole screen (Windows wheel spinning eternally), back to Win2012 until good news Il 09/06/2014 13:10, Jan Angermüller ha scritto: Can you confirm that when Finale 2014b has finished loading on Windows (it's Windows 7/64bit in my case) and you open the Windows Task Manager, you can watch Finale constantly allocating about 1 Megabyte per second of the internal memory ? After some time the Windows internal memory is completely allocated by Finale and Finale will crash. This happens no matter if you work with Finale or just let it stay open over night - I did the latter.
