Re: FW: Selecting all anchored Frames

2009-10-22 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Gillian

Buying Framescript is always a good idea. At only $149.95 for a Windows
license, it is VERY good value for money.

But you can also change the properties of your anchored frames without
Framescript. Proceed as follows:

1. Save your FM file as MIF.
2. Open your MIF file in a plain text editor.
3. Search for FrameType Inline, this is the tag for anchored frames with
anchoring position at insertion point.
4. Replace FrameType Inline with FrameType Below, meaning below current
line.
5. Save the MIF file, open it in FrameMaker again, save it as FM and Bob's
your uncle!

While you're doing this, you can also change other properties, for example
AnchorAlign Center to AnchorAlign Left.

Still, I'm wondering why you want to change the anchoring position from At
insertion point to Below current line. I place most of my anchored frames
at insertion point, and I use a dedicated paragraph tag for them (z_anchor).
In my z_anchor paragraph tag, I deselect the Fixed Line Spacing option,
so the graphic will fit in the paragraph. This approach gives me more
flexibility when things need to be changed globally, for example more
space above or below the graphic. Instead of changing the size of each
anchored frame below current line, I can use the Paragraph Designer and play
with Space Above and Space Below.

Cheers

ANN: WS Utilities (new plugin) released

2009-10-22 Thread russ
Hi,

We've just released a new plugin called West Street Utilities which
currently adds a host of new features for graphics management. These
features include the ability to compare graphics in a file system
against your FM source files, to see what is used and where. For more
information, see:

http://www.weststreetconsulting.com/WSC_Utils.htm

Unlike our other plugins, this one is not structure-oriented and can be
used on any FM 7, 8, or 9 file.

Thanks,
Russ Ward
Owner, WSC

I've been running 8 and 9 on W7 systems since the second beta version,

be a problem with 7 either, but I haven't played with it.

And all the components of TCS2 seem to be fine under 7.

I am also going to look into the hotfix, which looks promising. Due to the
way my company has my laptop set up, it will automatically do all sorts of
resource intensive things in the background that I have no control over

Have you evaluated the performance of the catalog tools made for InDesign?

  The fact that InDesign scripting is built in doesn’t affect my business;

I was thinking about the many free InDesign scripts; I don't know how this
compares to free FrameScript scripts.

Based on my experience, InDesign scripting performance with JavaScript is
poor compared to FrameScript/FrameMaker performance, particularly for more

Inefficient coding is common.

Agreed.

This is not to say that I don’t like InDesign; it is a great tool with
many nice features. But I would be cautious about moving to InDesign from
FrameMaker unless there is a compelling reason for doing so.

Two popular reasons are the significantly better typography controls, and
the better graphics features; ID's drawing tools are quite advanced vs. FM,
and there's more power in manipulating imported graphics. The graphic
features overlap Photoshop to some degree; the advantage here is staying
inside one application to use them. With TCS2 including the full Photoshop
application, more is more for sure.

Compelling is subjective, I agree. Usually, technical documentation's
communication of information doesn't improve significantly because of
more-sophisticatedly composed type, but for some publishers or publications,
masterful typesetting is a compelling requirement.

Perhaps Tina's list of requirements will provide more information for
comparing the applications and their suitability.

 Peter

Find text Apply tag

Hi all,
I need a simple Find-Replace operation, which I thought I asked about once
before ... but not quite.

I now need to look for all instances of the company's name, e.g., Acme, and
apply a character style to it.

And if I am already asking, how would I apply italics to the text, instead
of applying a character style?

I have looked at a number of articles about doing Find-Replace with tags but
they all seem to discuss how to change one tag to another, or how to change
local formatting to a tag, and not how to look for text and apply to it a
tag or formatting.

I saw somebody recommended Rick Quattro's Find-Replace plug-in. I couldn't
find it. Does anybody have a link to this?

Why not create a variable for the name, format it the way you want and then
do a S/R for the text and replace it with the variable.

That way, when they change the name of the product or the formatting of the

RE: Find text Apply tag

2009-10-22 Thread Shuttleworth, Roger
Hi Avraham

To apply the character format:
1. Create the format and apply it to a text range.
2. Select the formatted text and go to Edit-Copy Special-Character format.
3. Do a search and replace for your company name. In the Change field, select
By pasting. This applies the character format that you copied
previously.

As for applying italics without a character format, I think most would agree
that this is a Bad Thing. It's certainly not allowed in our office. I
don't think you can automate it.

No idea about Rick's script, but I expect he will chime in.

RE: FM 9 vs. InDesign

2009-10-22 Thread David Creamer
I have two PDFs:

One comparing InDesign CS4, FrameMaker 9, and QuarkXPress 8
http://www.ideastraining.com/PDFs/SelectingDTPprogram_v2.pdf

The older one comparing InDesign CS3, FrameMaker 8, and QuarkXPress 7
http://www.ideastraining.com/PDFs/SelectingDTPprogram.pdf

What program one chooses greatly depends on the type of projects one will
work on. If one is working on a large variety of projects--such as books,
newsletters, brochures, and proposals--I would look hard at InDesign. If
strictly working with larger book-type projects, one has to look at the
features of each program vs. what is needed (such as typographic quality or
column-spanning heads).

Another thing to look at is the equipment one has; typically InDesign
requires more computing power and RAM to run smoothly compared to
FrameMaker.

It works. I thought I already tried this but it didn't work before.
The guys on this forum obviously have green fingers...

Just one small problem though... I used the Emphasis character style. I
tried to apply As is to all the formatting of Emphasis, and then to set it
to italics, but it didn't stick. So when I then applied the Emphasis style
to a title, for example, it changed the font of the word Acme to whatever
size and color Emphasis is, which in my case, is italicized body text.

As for applying italics without a character format, I think most would

I'd recommend exporting to a Word file, then opening into FM.

Cleanup will certainly be necessary, but then (if desired) you can bring the
FM file into RH by reference if indeed you'll ever need to update the Help

I don't think you can do any kind of direct import because it's highly
unlikely the HTML is any kind of structured, so the best you can hope for is
getting the raw material into unstructured Frame.
I'm not sure that 7 can open HTML files as anything but text, either.
Webworks/Quadralay used to have a utility program called something like
Import Utility that would take HTML and output a MIF or FM file.

3. Search for FrameType Inline, this is the tag for anchored frames
with anchoring position at insertion point.
4. Replace FrameType Inline with FrameType Below, meaning below
current line.
5. Save the MIF file, open it in FrameMaker again, save it as FM and
Bob's your uncle!

While you're doing this, you can also change other properties, for
example AnchorAlign Center to AnchorAlign Left.

Still, I'm wondering why you want to change the anchoring position from
At insertion point to Below current line. I place most of my
anchored frames at insertion point, and I use a dedicated paragraph tag
for them (z_anchor). In my z_anchor paragraph tag, I deselect the
Fixed Line Spacing option, so the graphic will fit in the paragraph.
This approach gives me more flexibility when things need to be changed
globally, for example more space above or below the graphic. Instead
of changing the size of each anchored frame below current line, I can
use the Paragraph Designer and play with Space Above and Space
Below.

Cheers

1. Create a new character style with the attributes you want. Call it
TextItalics, for example.
2. Create a variable. Call it CompanyName.
3. Define the variable with the name of the product, using the new character
format, as needed.
4. Replace an instance of the current product name text with the CompanyName
variable you create.
5. Select the variable. Press Ctrl+c. The variable is copied into the
buffer.
6. Open the Find/Replace.
7. Type the text you want to find - in this case, it's the name of the
company.
8. In the Replace area, select Copy from Clipboard.
9. Click Find Next.
10. Click Replace. Click Find Next.
11. Rinse and repeat until all text company names have been replaced with
your variable.
(This is all from memory, so parts may be slightly wrong)

The advantage to this is that when they change the company name again - and
they will - you change the value of the CompanyName variable and it's
changed through out the file. Import that variable into all other documents
and you're done.

Do this for the product name as well, because if they are changing the
company name, they'll change the product name. Usually at the last second.

Not a question of professional use - more an issue of creating a time

too!

Far, far better to use character formats, believe me! :)

Hmmm, I use this feature *all* the time. My emphasis character tag only
applies italics to the selected characters ... and never messes with the
size or font or color!

I use it in titles, footnotes, body text, etc., (with different fonts
and sizes) without any difficulty.

My swag: are you not using the Update All button in the Character
Designer window when changing the definition for emphasis (after doing
the Set Window to As Is from the Command pull-down menu in that
Character Designer window)?

Z

Sidebar: my only minor pet peeve is that I want my emphasis to be
selective: when the underlying *default* font is Regular, I want the
emphasis to be italic ... and vice-versa!

No such luck - I asked about this on this forum before and no-one had an
answer! :(

So, I use two character tags - one for paragraphs with Regular default
fonts (to make the emphasized text be italic) and one with paragraphs
with italic default fonts (to make the emphasized text be regular).

2009-10-22 Thread Susan Modlin
Sharon's suggestion is a good one. No matter what the industry, company names,
product names, corporate identity styling, and the like are frequently subject
to change. And if you're in the software business, change is almost de rigueur.
The beauty of using variables for company names, etc. comes when Acme Corp.
becomes Zenith, Inc. and all you have to do is change the variable definition
and import it into every book in your doc set. Sanity is preserved! Happiness
prevails. And if you really want to preserve your sanity, replace your
indefinite articles (a/an) with definite articles (the). This protects you from
'an Zenith widget' embarrassment. Of course, this advice only applies for
English.

Why not create a variable for the name, format it the way you want and then
do a S/R for the text and replace it with the variable.

That way, when they change the name of the product or the formatting of the
name, you change the definition of the variable and you're done.

RE: Find text Apply tag

2009-10-22 Thread Fred Ridder

Copy Special can be a very useful function, but you need to be aware of it's
limitations. The biggest limitation is that it copies *all* the formatting
characteristics of the exemplar rather than just the one or two characteristics
you want to change.

For example, if you select an instance of the company name in a heading and
make it italic (either directly or by applying a character tag) and then do
Copy Special, the formatting that you will be pasting throughout your document
might be 20 pt bold italic Helvetica instead of your body font, which is
perhaps Times 11 pt. If you do the Find Replace globally, there will be a
lot of cases where you apply a lot of undesired formatting as well as the
specific formating you want.
For the circumstance you describe, I agree with other posters that a formatted
variable is the best approach. Whenever you insert the variable, it will appear
in the default font plus the formatting for the character tag that you've
applied via the variable definition.
-Fred Ridder

Replying to Avi, Roger Shuttleworth wrote:
 To apply the character format:
 1. Create the format and apply it to a text range.
 2. Select the formatted text and go to Edit-Copy Special-Character format.
 3. Do a search and replace for your company name. In the Change field, select
By pasting. This applies the character format that you copied
 previously.

As for applying italics without a character format, I think most would agree
that this is a Bad Thing. It's certainly not allowed in our office. I
don't think you can automate it.

One feature to remember is the pool of talent available to maintain

I know I (or my intern) can find in my current Rolodex FM users who

We used InDesign CS4. Although we don't have a version of the catalog
in FrameMaker for direct comparison, experience tells me that the
performance would be better in any recent version of FrameMaker.

Have you evaluated the performance of the catalog tools made for
InDesign?

The fact that InDesign scripting is built in doesn't affect my
business; I make money writing scripts, not selling scripting tools.

I was thinking about the many free InDesign scripts; I don't know how
this compares to free FrameScript scripts.

Based on my experience, InDesign scripting performance with JavaScript

is poor compared to FrameScript/FrameMaker performance, particularly
 for more complex tasks.

Inefficient coding is common.

When you using automation, the cost for a third-party tool can be
recovered quickly if there are significant gains in performance.

Agreed.

This is not to say that I don't like InDesign; it is a great tool
with many nice features. But I would be cautious about moving to
InDesign from FrameMaker unless there is a compelling reason for doing
so.

Two popular reasons are the significantly better typography controls,
and the better graphics features; ID's drawing tools are quite advanced
vs. FM, and there's more power in manipulating imported graphics. The
graphic features overlap Photoshop to some degree; the advantage here is
staying inside one application to use them. With TCS2 including the full
Photoshop application, more is more for sure.

Compelling is subjective, I agree. Usually, technical documentation's
communication of information doesn't improve significantly because of
more-sophisticatedly composed type, but for some publishers or
publications, masterful typesetting is a compelling requirement.

Perhaps Tina's list of requirements will provide more information for
comparing the applications and their suitability.

Can anyone point me to a thorough comparison list of features between
FM9 and InDesign? I'm using Frame primarily for print books at a small

publisher, and using it because I know it and I'm familiar with it.

I currently use Frame 8, and I'm considering an upgrade to either
 Frame 9 or InDesign.

I've read that InDesign CS4 recently added cross references. Does
anyone know how they compare to Frame's feature? Also, what about
creating an index in InDesign. What features does it have for dynamic
 indexing?

 Thanks.

Others have pointed out that you are viewing file names and must rename
the file to meet your objective. But perhaps all you really want is to
see the first heading in each file instead of the file name? In the
book window, there are four icons in the lower right; the leftmost of
them toggles between file names and headings in the list of book contents.

people how to do their job). I guess it is mainly ignorance and lack of time
to sit down and nut through the process that has stopped me but with where
ID has gone in CS4 (will go in CS5?) and where FM has gone in 9 I am seeing
less difference between the products for the kind of work I do.

If for some reason you can't try EZVars, follow Sharon's instructions,

the company name. Then create and copy an instance of the variable in
your Heading 1 pgf and use it to replace Heading 1 occurrences of the

Or, since there are probably far fewer replacements needed in headings,
etc., just use Find to select those and then use Special Variable to
replace the text manually.

2009-10-22 Thread Syed.Hosain
Richard, you are absolutely correct!

I just tested EZVars as well, and the method works perfectly.

Using EZVars, combined with Sharon's add the character tag to a
variable recommendation:

(a) creates the new variable with the required minimum set of
font changes like italic and spread and
(b) properly searches for and substitutes the variable for the
text.

FWIW, my most heavily used plug-in is Leximation's BookVars (by a wide
margin) ... and EZTools's EZVars is next. :)

FW: Selecting all anchored Frames

2009-10-22 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Gillian

Buying Framescript is always a good idea. At only $149.95 for a Windows
license, it is VERY good value for money.

But you can also change the properties of your anchored frames without
Framescript. Proceed as follows:

1. Save your FM file as MIF.
2. Open your MIF file in a plain text editor.
3. Search for , this is the tag for anchored frames with
anchoring position at insertion point.
4. Replace with , meaning "below current
line".
5. Save the MIF file, open it in FrameMaker again, save it as FM and Bob's
your uncle!

While you're doing this, you can also change other properties, for example
 to .

Still, I'm wondering why you want to change the anchoring position from "At
insertion point" to "Below current line". I place most of my anchored frames
at insertion point, and I use a dedicated paragraph tag for them (z_anchor).
In my "z_anchor" paragraph tag, I deselect the "Fixed Line Spacing" option,
so the graphic will fit in the paragraph. This approach gives me more
flexibility when things need to be changed "globally", for example more
space above or below the graphic. Instead of changing the size of each
anchored frame below current line, I can use the Paragraph Designer and play
with "Space Above" and "Space Below".

Cheers

ANN: WS Utilities (new plugin) released

2009-10-22 Thread r...@weststreetconsulting.com

Unlike our other plugins, this one is not structure-oriented and can be
used on any FM 7, 8, or 9 file.

on several computers, without any problems. I suspect there wouldn't
be a problem with 7 either, but I haven't played with it.

And all the components of TCS2 seem to be fine under 7.

You're displaying the file names. 3.0 Title Page.fm isn't a title, it's
the name of the file.

Are you expecting the names of your files to update automatically when
you change a variable or something in the files? Sorry ...

In the book window, right-click the file name and select Rename File.

FM 9 vs. InDesign

2009-10-22 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Peter,

I am comparing component chapter files in a catalog with lots of data. We used
InDesign CS4. Although we don?t have a version of the catalog in FrameMaker for
direct comparison, experience tells me that the performance would be better in
any recent version of FrameMaker.

The fact that InDesign scripting is built in doesn?t affect my business; I make
money writing scripts, not selling scripting tools. Based on my experience,
InDesign scripting performance with JavaScript is poor compared to
FrameScript/FrameMaker performance, particularly for more complex tasks. When
you using automation, the cost for a third-party tool can be recovered quickly
if there are significant gains in performance.

This is not to say that I don?t like InDesign; it is a great tool with many
nice features. But I would be cautious about moving to InDesign from FrameMaker
unless there is a compelling reason for doing so.

Can anyone point me to a thorough comparison list of features between FM9
and InDesign? I'm using Frame primarily for print books at a small
publisher, and using it because I know it and I'm familiar with it.

I currently use Frame 8, and I'm considering an upgrade to either Frame 9 or
InDesign.

I've read that InDesign CS4 recently added cross references. Does anyone
know how they compare to Frame's feature? Also, what about creating an index
in InDesign. What features does it have for dynamic indexing?

Thanks.

Tile page with new version number

2009-10-22 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
I'd go with Art on this, but there is a question if you really need
the revision number as a part of the file name? (And a good rule of
thumb: don't use spaces or in file names, althoug allowed in Windows,
and no dots other than before file endings. The one does not work well
with *nix and the other with many Windows applications).

I used to do this, but it makes revision work very tedious if you got
a long list of files within a book. What I did was to turn to
SVN/TortoiseSVN versioning database and keep all the files in there.
You can keep the file names constant which makes all referenced files
happy, and it is SO easy to work with.

HOWEVER: If I am misunderstanding you, and you are talking about an
autogenerated list, I usually create a text frame on each page that
has a different revision number that the previous and put a
Header/Footer $1 (or Header/Footer $2) marker in there populated with
the revision number (and the other with the revision date, if need be)
and then use Silicon Prairie's LEP tool to make (or prepare for) the
autogenerated List of Markers.

Postscript to PDF Corruption

2009-10-22 Thread Art Campbell
Joe, just to clarify one point

The SaveAsPDF function is still buggy in 9, although most of those
issues seem to be around CMYK generation I don't use it.

What I'm suggesting is that your system default printer should be the
Adobe logical printer so that all fonts are stable and embedded, etc.

Then use File > Print Book (or Print for a file) and select the Adobe
PDF printer. It'll prompt you for a PDF file name and prints and
distills in one action. If you're using bookmarks and other bells &
whistles, make sure the Generate Acrobat Data checkmark is activated
but the Print To File checkbox is clear.

Cheers,
Art

Two popular reasons are the significantly better typography controls, and
the better graphics features; ID's drawing tools are quite advanced vs. FM,
and there's more power in manipulating imported graphics. The graphic
features overlap Photoshop to some degree; the advantage here is staying
inside one application to use them. With TCS2 including the full Photoshop
application, "more is more" for sure.

"Compelling" is subjective, I agree.

Frame on Vista and Win7

2009-10-22 Thread Pinkham, Jim
FWIW, I was on a Win7 conference call last week, hosted by Microsoft and
HP. The Microsoft spokesman said 98 percent to 99 percent of all apps
that will run on XP or Vista, will also run on Win 7. They're not
claiming 100 percent, he said, because the remaining 1 percent to 2
percent have yet to be verified.

It would sure be nice to know if FrameMaker and Adobe in the broad sense
are comfortable and compatible?

Any discussion would be appreciated.

Find Apply

2009-10-22 Thread Avraham Makeler
Hi all,
I need a simple Find-Replace operation, which I thought I asked about once
before ... but not quite.

2009-10-22 Thread Sharon Burton
Why not create a variable for the name, format it the way you want and then
do a S/R for the text and replace it with the variable.

That way, when they change the name of the product or the formatting of the
name, you change the definition of the variable and you're done.

Find Apply

2009-10-22 Thread Shuttleworth, Roger
Hi Avraham

To apply the character format:
1. Create the format and apply it to a text range.
2. Select the formatted text and go to Edit->Copy Special->Character format.

FM 9 vs. InDesign

2009-10-22 Thread David Creamer
I have two PDFs:

One comparing InDesign CS4, FrameMaker 9, and QuarkXPress 8

The older one comparing InDesign CS3, FrameMaker 8, and QuarkXPress 7

What program one chooses greatly depends on the type of projects one will
work on. If one is working on a large variety of projects--such as books,
newsletters, brochures, and proposals--I would look hard at InDesign. If
strictly working with larger book-type projects, one has to look at the
features of each program vs. what is needed (such as typographic quality or
column-spanning heads).

Another thing to look at is the equipment one has; typically InDesign
requires more computing power and RAM to run smoothly compared to
FrameMaker.

I strongly suggest that instead, you replace all instances of Acme with
a variable, e.g., CompanyName, whose definition includes both the char
format and the text. The EZVars plug-in from electropubs.com makes
replacing text with a variable (and other variable-related tasks) ... um
... EZ.

Don't. If you need to do this to all instances of Acme, why would you
want to use ad hoc formatting, creating countless overrides?

Use Copy Special to copy the char tag to the clipboard and then change
by pasting.

Find Apply

2009-10-22 Thread Avraham Makeler
It works. I thought I already tried this but it didn't work before.
The guys on this forum obviously have "green fingers"...

Just one small problem though... I used the Emphasis character style. I
tried to apply "As is" to all the formatting of Emphasis, and then to set it
to italics, but it didn't "stick". So when I then applied the Emphasis style

converting RoboHTML files to Frame?

2009-10-22 Thread Matt Sullivan
I'd recommend exporting to a Word file, then opening into FM.

Cleanup will certainly be necessary, but then (if desired) you can bring the
FM file into RH by reference if indeed you'll ever need to update the Help
via FM again.

I don't think you can do any kind of direct import because it's highly
unlikely the HTML is any kind of structured, so the best you can hope for is
getting the raw material into unstructured Frame.
I'm not sure that 7 can open HTML files as anything but text, either.
Webworks/Quadralay used to have a utility program called something like
"Import Utility" that would take HTML and output a MIF or FM file.

3. Search for , this is the tag for anchored frames
with anchoring position at insertion point.
4. Replace with , meaning "below
current line".
5. Save the MIF file, open it in FrameMaker again, save it as FM and
Bob's your uncle!

While you're doing this, you can also change other properties, for
example to .

Still, I'm wondering why you want to change the anchoring position from
"At insertion point" to "Below current line". I place most of my
anchored frames at insertion point, and I use a dedicated paragraph tag
for them (z_anchor). In my "z_anchor" paragraph tag, I deselect the
"Fixed Line Spacing" option, so the graphic will fit in the paragraph.
This approach gives me more flexibility when things need to be changed
"globally", for example more space above or below the graphic. Instead
of changing the size of each anchored frame below current line, I can
use the Paragraph Designer and play with "Space Above" and "Space
Below".

Cheers

1. Create a new character style with the attributes you want. Call it
TextItalics, for example.
2. Create a variable. Call it CompanyName.
3. Define the variable with the name of the product, using the new character
format, as needed.
4. Replace an instance of the current product name text with the CompanyName
variable you create.
5. Select the variable. Press Ctrl+c. The variable is copied into the
buffer.
6. Open the Find/Replace.
7. Type the text you want to find - in this case, it's the name of the
company.
8. In the Replace area, select Copy from Clipboard.
9. Click Find Next.
10. Click Replace. Click Find Next.
11. Rinse and repeat until all text company names have been replaced with
your variable.
(This is all from memory, so parts may be slightly wrong)

The advantage to this is that when they change the company name again - and
they will - you change the value of the CompanyName variable and it's
changed through out the file. Import that variable into all other documents
and you're done.

Do this for the product name as well, because if they are changing the

Not a question of professional use - more an issue of creating a time
bomb that will hit you again ... later! If you ever change the paragraph
definition later, all your manually applied italics might get "fixed"
too!

Far, far better to use character formats, believe me! :)

set it to italics, but it didn't "stick". So when I then applied the
Emphasis style to a title, for example, it changed the font of the word
Acme to whatever size and color Emphasis is, which in my case, is

Hmmm, I use this feature *all* the time. My emphasis character tag only
applies italics to the selected characters ... and never messes with the
size or font or color!

I use it in titles, footnotes, body text, etc., (with different fonts
and sizes) without any difficulty.

My swag: are you not using the "Update All" button in the Character
Designer window when changing the definition for "emphasis" (after doing
the "Set Window to As Is" from the Command pull-down menu in that
Character Designer window)?

Z

Sidebar: my only minor pet peeve is that I want my "emphasis" to be
selective: when the underlying *default* font is Regular, I want the
emphasis to be italic ... and vice-versa!

No such luck - I asked about this on this forum before and no-one had an
answer! :(

So, I use two character tags - one for paragraphs with Regular default
fonts (to make the emphasized text be italic) and one with paragraphs
with italic default fonts (to make the emphasized text be regular).

Others have pointed out that you are viewing file names and must rename
the file to meet your objective. But perhaps all you really want is to
see the first heading in each file instead of the file name? In the
book window, there are four icons in the lower right; the leftmost of
them toggles between file names and headings in the list of book contents.

If you do the Find & Replace globally, there will be a
lot of cases where you apply a lot of undesired formatting as well as the
specific formating you want.
For the circumstance you describe, I agree with other posters that a formatted
variable is the best approach. Whenever you insert the variable, it will appear
in the default font plus the formatting for the character tag that you've
applied via the variable definition.

FM 9 vs. InDesign

2009-10-22 Thread John Sgammato
One "feature" to remember is the pool of talent available to maintain
the docs if you are unable to.
I know I (or my intern) can find in my current Rolodex FM users who
could take over my docs if I get hit by a bus. At this time I could not
do the same for InDesign users, so I would have to build that network,
too.

Photoshop application, "more is more" for sure.

"Compelling" is subjective, I agree.

Just one small problem though... I used the Emphasis character style. I
tried to apply "As is" to all the formatting of Emphasis, and then to set it
to italics, but it didn't "stick". So when I then applied the Emphasis style
to a title, for example, it changed the font of the word Acme to whatever
size and color Emphasis is, which in my case, is italicized body text.

>> As for applying italics without a character format, I think most would

I agree that this is not professional, but if I do it this way then at least
I don't get the problem I get when I use a character style (Emphasis) above.

Solved RE: Tile page with new version number

2009-10-22 Thread Susan Curtzwiler

Hi All,
Thank you for all the suggestions. My first thought was to change the file
name as noted by many of you.
I was checking to see if there was a tag I was missing, as suggested by
Jerrilynn.
I went ahead and changed the filename, since I wanted the name of the file to
match the name of the title page.

I treasure all the help from this forum.

Thanks again and have a great weekend.

Others have pointed out that you are viewing file names and must rename
the file to meet your objective. But perhaps all you really want is to
see the first heading in each file instead of the file name? In the
book window, there are four icons in the lower right; the leftmost of
them toggles between file names and headings in the list of book contents.

Find Apply

2009-10-22 Thread Sharon Burton
You didn't create a new character format and apply it to the text in the
variable in the Variable dialog box. That's where you do it.

Look in the Frame docs for more help.

The advantage to this is that when they change the company name again - and
they will - you change the value of the CompanyName variable and it's
changed through out the file. Import that variable into all other documents
and you're done.

Do this for the product name as well, because if they are changing the
company name, they'll change the product name. Usually at the last second.

Find Apply

2009-10-22 Thread Combs, Richard
Avraham Makeler wrote:

Sharon was absolutely correct about creating a variable. But there's a
"gotcha" with the Find/Replace strategy for replacing the company name
text with the variable: When you copy the variable (her step 5), you're
copying _that specific instance_ of the variable, including the
formatting of that instance (i.e., the formatting it inherits from the
pgf it's in).

So if you copy an instance in body text, it works when you paste it into
body text, but when you paste it into a heading, it's the wrong size,
font, weight ... whatever.

That's why I recommended EZVars from electropubs.com. It lets you
replace the company name text with a _new instance_ of the variable,
just as if you'd selected the text, selected Special > Variable, and
replaced the text with a variable. Give it a trial -- I think you'll
agree it's well worth the modest cost.

If for some reason you can't try EZVars, follow Sharon's instructions,
but in multiple stages. First, create and copy an instance of the
variable in body text and use it to replace all body text occurrences of
the company name. Then create and copy an instance of the variable in
your Heading 1 pgf and use it to replace Heading 1 occurrences of the
company name. Repeat for other pgf formats as necessary.

Or, since there are probably far fewer replacements needed in headings,
etc., just use Find to select those and then use Special > Variable to
replace the text manually.

Richard, you are absolutely correct!

I just tested EZVars as well, and the method works perfectly.

Using EZVars, combined with Sharon's "add the character tag" to a
variable recommendation:

(a) creates the new variable with the required minimum set of
font changes like italic and spread and
(b) properly searches for and substitutes the variable for the
text.

FWIW, my most heavily used plug-in is Leximation's BookVars (by a wide
margin) ... and EZTools's EZVars is next. :)

If you are sure that Adobe is not messing with your computer when

I am not sure about FM 8. However, when you install FM9, you can skip
installing Distiller separately. Instead, it will install a light-weight
