Proof reading the Adobe FrameMaker 11 'documentation'?

2013-08-16 Thread Simon BUCH
I have been making some preparations for a work project, and so I've
been trying to gather additional information on FrameMaker 11. So far,
my results have been disappointing.

I want to research on the Hunspell dictionary functionality, but all I
can find is just ONE single reference in the User Guide [and online
Help] to a setting on the Edit Preferences dialog. No further
information at all.

I then decided to read the FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file, which is
part of the FrameMaker 11 trial software package that was downloaded at
the end of June, but there appears to be some confusion:

* FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file - System requirements
http://www.adobe.com/go/framemaker_systemreqs
takes you to the Adobe special Error404 page.
I suspect they meant to say:
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/systemreqs.html

* FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file - Installation Instructions
For detailed instructions on installation, visit the installation
page: http://www.adobe.com/go/cs_install_instruct_en;

Creative Suite 6 Installation Instructions?
OK. I thought FM11 was part of the TC suite.

* FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file - Trial software
You can convert from a trial to a full version at any time by
either purchasing a copy of the product or signing up for a subscription

Really? No wonder why there's been so much discussion on this list
about the subject.

Where do I find further information on this?

* FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file Known Issues?
http://adobe.com/go/fm_known_issues_en

Adobe special Error404 page again.

So, I'm still none the wiser about Hunspell. Oh well.

OT: Font suggestions for book?

2013-08-16 Thread VLM TechSubs
Hi everyone,

I'm not sure whether this post went through, so I'm trying again.

In the past, I've worked on writing, editing, and functional template design,
but in general I've left pretty stuff such as font
selection to others. So I really don't know what fonts might be most readable,
or most popular, or how to pair a body and a heading
font, or the like. Of course, much is written all over the Internet, but I
thought that here, there would be people with specific
experience writing and publishing books. So that is why I have directed this
inquiry here. I hope it's okay. :)

Thanks,

Greetings everyone,

I'm working in FM 8, Win 7 x64 on a book that will be published this Fall. I've
now been asked to do the book design, in addition to
most of the writing and basic template design. The subject matter is primarily
financial . it's a book about the history of
taxation. It's not a scholarly work at all, but rather one designed to wake
up American teens and young adults to some of the
issues involved. Footnotes are used here and there, but more for explanation of
background/details than in a traditional sense as
references. The book will be published in a standard 6x9 format, paperback.

All that having been said . What are people's favorite or recommended fonts for
such a project. And since this is being published on
a shoestring budget with a nonprofit/educational bent, suggestions of free
fonts would be most welcome.

Well, thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Elchanan

RE: OT: Font suggestions for book?

2013-08-16 Thread Fred Ridder
Besides being a matter of taste (which really cannot be argued), font choice
cannot be done intelligently without knowing *lot* of other information, such
as:
- medium of the deliverable (printed, PDF, HTML, eBook, etc.)
- page size (if fixed, or range of page size if variable)
- column width and point size (which together determine the point size range)
- leading
- nature of content (fiction, general non-fiction, scholarly writing, technical
documentation, etc.)
- natural organization of content (all text in long paragraphs vs. text blocks
broken up by shorter paragraphs and/or lists vs. text with lots of tables and
figures, etc.)

What works well for the kind of technical content I work with most of the time
(long, complex sentences but often fairly short paragraphs, and lots of tables
and bulleted lists) is very different from what I would use for some of the
general non-fiction I edit on the side. And neither of those correspond to what
I prefer to see when I read fiction.

If you asked this question over on the Techwr-l list, I'm sure you'd get a
flood of highly opinionated answers. If you asked it on the copyeditors list, I
think you'd get a handful of it depends answers similar to mine since there
are some actual book designers on that list. But over here in the world of
FrameMaker, I'm not sure that we have a lot of people who fancy themselves font
fondlers.

Subject: RE: Unavailable fonts message - incorrect?

You posting seems to reflect several small misconceptions about how FrameMaker
works. Let me see if I can address them one at a time.

First, a single unavailable fonts message in one file can, in fact, also be
the cause of subsequent unresolved cross-references messages in other files.
When you open any file that contains cross-references, FrameMaker attempts to
refresh all of those references by looking at each target location and grabbing
the current text string and numbering properties (autonumbering and page
numbering). If any of those cross-references point to locations that are in
other files, FM has to silently open each of those files to refresh the
references. But if a target file has an unavailable font condition, that
error prevents FM from completing the silent open operation that is necessary
to resolve the cross-reference. The result is an unresolved cross-reference
message. But note that if the file with the unavailable font condition is
already open when you open the file that refers to it, you will *not* get an
unresolved message because FM doesn't need to do a silent open.

Second, FrameMaker *does* report which fonts are unavailable, but does not do
it in the warning message itself. Instead, you have to look in the FrameMaker
console window, which most of us are in the habit of ignoring or dismissing
without bothering to read it.

Third, the unavailable font does not have to be applied to any content that
appears in the body of the document to cause the warning message. It is enough
for the font to be specified in the definition of some format that you don't
actually use, and this font specification can be in any of your catalogs--a
character format, a paragraph format, a cross-reference format, or a table
format. Table formats are a particular problem because each format definition
invisibly embeds the character and paragraph formatting for the table title,
and for each cell in the heading row, the footing row, and the first body row
of the table that was the prototype when the format was defined; you will never
be able to find these using the FM GUI unless you create an instance of each
table format that exists in your catalog. Unavailable fonts can also lurk on
master pages and reference pages which are not examined when you do a find
font operation (which only searches the context in the current view) or List
of References operation (which only looks at body pages). They can even be
hiding in certain types of graphic objects that contain font specifications
(PDF, EPS, WMF, EMF).

Fourth, to get rid of an unavailable fonts condition you need to *UN-check* the
Remember Missing Font Names preference. Remembering the names means that FM
will do a *temporary* substitution of an available font for an unavailable one,
but will retain the original, unavailable font specification in the version of
the file that it saves. What you need is for FM to *forget* the names of the
unavailable fonts and save the file with the substituted font specifications.
So the procedure would be:
1. Open the offending file, dismissing the unavailable fonts warning.
2. Examine the FrameMaker console to determine whether all of the
substitutions FM has made are appropriate (e.g., no sans-serif font subbed for
a serif, no text font subbed for a symbol or wingding font).
3. Close the file.
4. Turn OFF Remember Missing Font Names.
5. Open the file. Notice that the warning message has changed, and that
FrameMaker now warns you that it will be permanently *replacing* the fonts
rather than substituting for them.
6. Examine the file to

Re: Scaling Images

2013-08-16 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi Ed,

instead of using impsize you could try dpi. This
attribute would at least respect the ratio of the imported graphic file.

The definition of dpi in the attlist is:
dpi NMTOKEN #IMPLIED
!--ignored if impsize specified--
(as described in the STRUCTURE
APPLICATION DEVELOPER GUIDE)

It would also produce a kind of scaling:

A graphic file originally designed for 300 dpi would have a smaller
representation if dpi is set to 400.
Of course, all files should have
equivalent resolution settings.

I don't know how FrameMaker will
handle a dpi-related size with a PDF, though...
I have only used this
for tiff files.

Good luck -

 Greetings, fellow Framers.

 Two of us in
the office have tried many ways to get autonumbering to work properly in
a run-in head configuration, but we're getting very strange results, no
matter what we do.

As shown below, the autonumbering works fine up
to 9, but then goes to 01, 11, 21, and so forth. (As you can
see, we also have centering issues to eventually resolve.)

 What
you are looking at is a glyph in Bullet Paragraph Tag (autonumber =
B:●t). Bullet is a run-in paragraph.

 The next tag is Bullet
Number (autonumber = N:tn=1t) or (N:tn+t). This is a non-run-in
paragraph.

We've experimented with resets and changes to series
designations between the run-in and the non-run-in paragraphs, but
nothing we've tried so far has worked. The best we've managed is to
produce a 10, but the 10 appears at the beginning of the list,
followed by numbers 1 through 9, and then numbers that increment in 10s,
as before; that is, 01, 11, 21, and so forth.

 Does anyone
happen to have a solution for this?

 I would really appreciate some

I suppose it doesn't make any difference, but we are using
FrameMaker 11.

 John,

One of our customers (using WebWorks ePublisher) did some work to export
his topics as a JSON file. It is custom, though it sounds like it is close
 to what you are discussing.

This is possible via ePublisher's XSL support. If you are up for doing a
bit of XSL work, you can build a reusable format to accomplish your goal.

RE: Font suggestions for book?

2013-08-16 Thread Craig Ede
This is the reason people go to graphic design school and spend all that
time worrying about recognizing typefaces, the effects of leading, etc.

Your audience should determine the look of the book. Check out books at your
local bm bookstore--bricks and mortar, not Barnes and Noble, tho' they
might be the same. Many books will list the typeface used at the front or
back of the book.

All typefaces have a distinct character. Academic writing uses staid and
conservative type. Children's books use wacky letterforms. You want
something in between. Another alternative is to go to a site like
www.identifont.com and drill down through a series of font attributes. They
also list the most popular fonts there. (Interestingly, they use font, not
typeface, as their terminology.)

Printed, longer samples of type in an actual book give you a better idea of
the character of a typeface than small samples on a computer screen.

These are just some starting considerations.

Good luck.

Craig

Re: mac and Tech Comm Suite

2013-08-16 Thread Alan Litchfield

Yes, this has been discussed on the list before and solutions provided.

I don't use TCS but FM and Acrobat on Windows, CS6 and Acrobat on Mac. I
use VirtualBox but they all provide similar service and functionalty. It
becomes personal choice. I use Bootcamp for a Windows partition and boot
the Windows partition through VirtualBox. Seamless and fast.

Re: OT: Font suggestions for book?

2013-08-16 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Choosing a font set is always a bit of a matter of taste. However, it is
usual to see in (company) manuals sans serif types like Arial (ususally
because no one bothers to check for anything else) or the Calibri font that
came with the newer MS Office suites.

I used to opt for Helvetica instead of Arial, mainly because the numbers
were clearer in Helvetica. But that was clearly before Calibri times. ;-)

Some serif fonts come to mind. I am working with a book now about a certain
institution, and I decided to use the old Cheltenham for body and Myriad
Pro for headings.

I have spent a lot of time through the years looking for and comparing
fonts, and in one instance, trying to decide on the best font for the
dim-sighted, I made four copies of sample text with different fonts and had
people test read (from a distance to closer up). The one decided upon
seemed to help the dyslexics too.

So, if you want to study fonts, you will be spending a lot of your free
time. But it is fun! But your customer will not complement you on it,
becaus he/she/they do not know what it really is that makes them like or
hate the looks of the book. There are so many things to consider.

But you are right: Readability counts. So, not Arial! And not fancy fonts.

Probably this is of little help, but it is Friday night. :-)

And, I could send you some samples in pdf if you like. Main thing is: What
does your font library consist of? New fonts can be very expensive.

Have a nice weekend!

AFAIK, Hunspell uses (or at least did use) plain text files. In Open Office
and Libre Office, I can add to it from the old UNIX libraries for aspell or
ispell. Which can be added to directly in a text editor, if you want to.

I don't know whether it is any different in FM11. Have you googled hunspell?

RE: Font suggestions for book?

2013-08-16 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
The answer is This is Your decision really!

However, I can make some personal observations.

I bought this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BFOYW4K/ref=docs-os-doi_0
quite a while back and found it a good read to understand how to make fonts in
documents look good. (The title is Type Layout: Are You Communicating or
Just Making Pretty Shapes.)

Also, I bought Adobe Type Library Reference Book some months back:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321821254/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8psc=1
just as a reference to see how their fonts would look when printed in books.
This book is definitely overkill for most people, of course, but an interesting
reference to have!

BTW, quite separately, this is a fun read for interesting stories on fonts - as
I recall, someone on this list recommended it:
http://www.amazon.com/Just-My-Type-About-ebook/dp/B00BFOYW4K/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-textie=UTF8qid=1376695562sr=1-1keywords=Just+My+TYpe.
(The title is Just My Type.)

Anyway, my advice is to use a Serif font for dense text (books, specifications,
etc.) because it is believed to be easier to read (a myth according to some
people though):
http://blogs.adobe.com/acom/2008/07/to_serif_or_not_to_serif_regar_1.html ...
particularly in printed text. As I recall, that is what prompted the New York
Times newspaper to develop the Times font years ago.

A quote from
http://www.awaionline.com/2011/10/the-best-fonts-to-use-in-print-online-and-email/:

Best fonts for print

In his book Cashvertising, Drew Eric Whitman cites a 1986 study of fonts
(printed on paper) that found only 12 percent of participants effectively
comprehended a paragraph set in sans-serif type versus 67 percent who were
given a version set in serif typeface.

Those who read the sans-serif version said they had a tough time reading the
text and continually had to backtrack to regain comprehension.

In a test of three different fonts, two serifs (Garamond and Times New Roman)
and one sans serif (Helvetica), he found 66 percent were able to comprehend
Garamond; 31.5 percent Times New Roman, and 12.5 percent Helvetica (out of a
total of 1,010,000 people surveyed).

FWIW, I believe the Serif Myth ... after doing my own comparisons. So, I use
Palatino Linotype for my text in documents and specifications, particularly
because symbols like copyright (c) and trademark (tm) are easier to read in
smaller sizes (i.e., under 10pt). Just compare two pages of the same text, one
in Palatino Linotype (or Times Roman) and one in Helvetica (or Arial) to
understand what I mean by easier to read denser Serif text when looking at a
full page of words in a book or document or manual.

Now, for on-screen readability, people believe that a Sans Serif font is best.
That may well be true ... I just have not done any how does it look testing
for myself yet.

When I need a fixed-width font (code, scripts, certain numbers, etc.), I use
Consolas since it looks very, very good on-screen and in print (unlike
Courier and its variants).

With text that is stretched vertically, or squeezed horizontally, at all - for
example, for a banner or section/chapter heading - a Sans Serif font is better,
IMHO. I used to use Arial, but switched a while back to Helvetica based on
comments from people on this list. I compared the two fonts, and Helvetica is
clearly better looking with rounded character structures (look at the letter
e, for example).

And, finally, for presentations, I now find Adobe Myriad Pro Light to be very
clean and light, so I am using it more and more of late.

Summary ... for me (YMMV):

1. Dense text inside the books and documents: Palatino Linotype.

2. Chapter/section header, banners: Helvetica.

3. Fixed-width content: Consolas.

4. Presentations: Adobe Myriad Pro Light.

Z

OT: Font suggestions for book?

If you asked it on the copyeditors list, I
think you'd get a handful of "it depends" answers similar to mine since there
are some actual book designers on that list. But over here in the world of
FrameMaker, I'm not sure that we have a lot of people who fancy themselves font
fondlers.

mac and Tech Comm Suite

2013-08-16 Thread gill6...@comcast.net
Craig,

You can't run it directly on a Mac. You have to run it in a Windows VM. I use
VMWare Fusion with a Windows 7 OS. Works great!

I'm considering replacing my current windows laptop with a Mac laptop. I know
that some framers are using Macs with the latest Adobe TCS software, and I
would appreciate any brief comments on the benefits/hassles of working with TCS
on a Mac and what contortions have worked best for you to make this work.

You can send comments to me offlist if you'd like, or post to the list if you

Unavailable fonts message - incorrect?

2013-08-16 Thread STEPHENSON pascale
Open the file. Notice that the warning message has changed, and that
FrameMaker now warns you that it will be permanently *replacing* the fonts
rather than substituting for them.
6. Examine the file to make sure it looks OK.
7. Save the file. Many people neglect to do this because they haven't made
any explicit edits or format changes, but the font change will not "take" and
be carried forward unless the file is saved after you let FM make the
replacement.
8. Turn "Remember Missing Font Names" back ON. (It is normally a very good
idea not to reformat a file from a colleague or client to match your own less
complete font library.)
This *should* take care of the problem unless the bad font name is embedded in
a graphic.

Another approach that some users swear by is to save the offending file as MIF
and then use a text editor to search for the names of the unavailable fonts, as
reported in the FM console. After making the substitution with the font editor,
the file is saved as MIF, then opened from FrameMaker and saved back to .fm
file format. This approach still will not look inside graphics objects, but I
have personally seen cases where the source .fm file contained a *completely*
spurious font specification (for a Chinese font in my case) that was removed
simply by passing it through the FM->MIF filter (i.e., the bad font was not
findable in the the MIF file and was gone when the file was restored to .fm
format).

Subject: Unavailable fonts message - incorrect?
Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2013 10:17:25 +
Hello

I am using FrameMaker 9 on Windows 7. When I open a particular book, I get the
classic 'unavailable fonts' error on many of the files (followed by 'unresolved
cross-reference' errors, but for now I'm assuming the two are related). When my
colleague opens the same book, he doesn't get any errors. Fair enough, our font
setup might be a little bit different.

FM doesn't report which fonts are causing the problem in the message, so I took
two files, one with the error and one without, and generated a list of fonts
using Special > List Of > References. Both files contain exactly the same fonts
so I can't isolate it to any font in particular. Indeed, the fact one has a
problem with one of the fonts and the other doesn't makes me think the error
itself may be incorrect.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what I can do next? It seems
to be one particular book causing the problem.
Checking the 'Remember Missing Font Names' option doesn't stop the problem from
re-occurring.

Thanks in advance.

Pascale

Scaling Images

2013-08-16 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi Ed,

instead of using "impsize" you could try "dpi". This
attribute would at least respect the ratio of the imported graphic file.

The definition of "dpi" in the attlist is:
dpi NMTOKEN #IMPLIED

(as described in the STRUCTURE
APPLICATION DEVELOPER GUIDE)

It would also produce a kind of scaling:

A graphic file originally designed for 300 dpi would have a smaller
representation if "dpi" is set to 400.
Of course, all files should have
equivalent resolution settings.

I don't know how FrameMaker will
handle a dpi-related "size" with a PDF, though...
I have only used this
for tiff files.

Good luck -

Autonumbering Puzzle for an Ordered List Numbering Scheme

2013-08-16 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi Alex,

the main problem is to have a bullet big enough for a
number with two digits.

I produced a test font, where the bullet is
very big and starts below the normal font line.

Everything else works
fine. The bullet character tag gets around -42% for the distance which
will pull the following numbered paragraph on top.

Of course, this
will only help until you reach the number 100.

I will send you my
examples off-list.

Best regards -

2013-08-16 Thread John Sgammato
Thanks, Ben - I can go from FM to JSON acceptably well via Mif2Go, and from
there ot the .CSV.
The problem is SalesForce's requirement for the .CSV file. That becomes the
bottleneck in the procedure.
I was hoping someone had found something less primitive that SalesForce
will accept.

Font suggestions for book?

2013-08-16 Thread Craig Ede
This is the reason people go to graphic design school and spend all that
time worrying about recognizing typefaces, the effects of leading, etc.

Your audience should determine the look of the book. Check out books at your
local b bookstore--bricks and mortar, not Barnes and Noble, tho' they
might be the same.

Good luck.

Craig

Proof reading the Adobe FrameMaker 11 'documentation'?

2013-08-16 Thread Matt Sullivan
The Fm11 Reviewer's Guide has a short blurb about Hunspell. Here's a link to
the full PDF (about 60Mb) http://bit.ly/1cKH2pT

Enhanced dictionary support
Acknowledging the global usage of FrameMaker, and the increasing need for
localization, FrameMaker 11 has added to our Proximity dictionary support by
integrating the HunSpell dictionary architecture for increased generic
dictionary
support.
Using the spellings and dictionary preferences in the Edit > Preferences dialog,
you can set up the dictionary provider of your choice for different languages.
Also, you can set up Spelling preferences to optimize the FrameMaker Spelling
Checker.

OT: Font suggestions for book?

Bodvar, Iceland

Proof reading the Adobe FrameMaker 11 'documentation'?

2013-08-16 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
AFAIK, Hunspell uses (or at least did use) plain text files. In Open Office
and Libre Office, I can add to it from the old UNIX libraries for aspell or
ispell. Which can be added to directly in a text editor, if you want to.

I don't know whether it is any different in FM11. Have you googled hunspell?

Font suggestions for book?

2013-08-16 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
e,

I'm working in FM 8, Win 7 x64 on a book that will be published this Fall. I've
now been asked to do the book design, in addition to most of the writing and
basic template design. The subject matter is primarily financial ... it's a
book about the history of taxation. It's not a scholarly work at all, but
rather one designed to "wake up" American teens and young adults to some of the
issues involved. Footnotes are used here and there, but more for explanation of
background/details than in a traditional sense as references. The book will be
published in a standard 6x9 format, paperback.

All that having been said ... What are people's favorite or recommended fonts
for such a project. And since this is being published on a shoestring budget
with a nonprofit/educational bent, suggestions of free fonts would be most
welcome.

Well, thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Elchanan
