Re: [Framers] [EXTERNAL] FrameMaker 11 - blank pages appearing at the end of imported file

2020-04-17 Thread Craig Ede
Very true, Dan. So the quick way to delete all extra elements (like empty
graphic tool text boxes) AND altered master pages is to click in the margin of
the page, select all on the blank body page and then delete everything. Then
View>Master page, then back to the body page via View>Body Page, then from the
Page Layout Warning window select Remove Overrides. This will ensure you have a
standard Master Page with the given name.
Craig

...snip...

Additionally, even if a page has a default master page applied, if it has had
the main text flow dimensions altered in any way, e.g., previously dragging it
slightly long to allow a cumbersome footnote or other element, that will
prevent the page from being autodeleted. Technically, I suppose it is then no
longer using a default master page, but it's easy to miss that simply changing
an aspect of the text flow would cause the master page to no longer be
considered default when you didn't consciously change the applied master page.

Subject: Re: [Framers] [EXTERNAL] FrameMaker 11 - blank pages appearing at the

Here are the rules that FrameMaker uses for automatic page deletion:

1) Only empty pages that have default master pages applied (Left/Right) at the
end of the document will be deleted. By "empty" I mean no text in the
document's main flow.

2) If the page count is set to even, only empty pages beyond the last even page
are deleted, which means that you may end up with an empty, even-numbered last
page.

Here are things that will prevent pages from being automatically deleted:

1) Any empty pages up to and including any pages that have custom master pages
applied will not be deleted.

2) Any empty pages that have any non-master page items on them will not be
deleted. This includes non-main flow text frames, graphic objects, etc. that
are directly on the page.

Sometimes that is not enough. If you still have empty pages, in the top ribbon,
click Special. In the drop down, click Delete pages..., and then enter the page
number(s) to delete. That has always worked for me.

Check your pagination. If you have it set to an even number of pages and your
text ends on an odd number, FM inserts a blank page at the end.

Format > Page Layout > Pagination > Before Saving & Printing drop-down. If it's
set to "Make Page Count Even", there's your culprit.

Re: [Framers] [EXTERNAL] FrameMaker 11 - blank pages appearing at the end of imported file

2020-04-16 Thread Craig Ede
More often than not I have found that page deletion is prevented by an empty
text box (not a text flow) that was accidentally created on the page that won't
delete.

Usually this is a result of someone using the graphic text tool and clicking on
the page, not entering text and then clicking off leaving an empty text entry
box. By clicking on the margin of the page and then doing a Select All
(Cntl-A), the text box will show up as a selected item along with all other
objects on the page (usually just the text flow from the master page). Often
times there are many of such empty text boxes indicating that somebody was
twitchy with the text entry tool. Just deselect the pages main text flow and
hit delete to remove them.

Hello Brenda
If the pages are truly blank they should disappear as soon as you save the file.

[Framers] FrameMaker 11 - blank pages appearing at the end of imported file

2020-04-16 Thread George, Brenda
I am working in Structured FrameMaker 11.

After the importing the file, there are blank pages appearing at the end of the
file.

How do I eliminate these pages so that they don't appear after a file has been
imported into FrameMaker?

Blank pages

2014-03-12 Thread Pam Harper
I have all of my books set for single-sided with Delete Empty Pages. Lately
extra blank pages are showing on many documents even after I save (which almost
always clears out empty pages) or select Remove Overrides when going from
master view to page view (another reliable way for deleting extra pages). But
they still remain, and I can only get rid of them manually. I use Frame 10 on a
64-bit Windows 7 system. Today I worked on a 100 page file where the document
shrank considerably to about 50 pages. And again, even after saving and
generating the book, the extra pages still remained.
These pages show after the end of the section mark. What could be causing this?

Re: Blank pages

2014-03-12 Thread Shmuel Wolfson

List of reasons for unwanted blank
  pages (from Harro de Jong):

Blank pages at the start or end of a chapter:
  - rightclick chapter in book-Pagination-Make page count
odd/even (can add an empty page at end of chapter)
  - rightclick chapter in book-Pagination- 1st page side
(can add an empty page at the start of the chapter if it's set to
  anything other than Next Available.)
  - Page break in paragraph format or as paragraph override, or
  start: top of page setting
  - Master pages set to anything other than Left or Right
  - Pages with graphic objects or text frames outside (or behind)
  the body text frame
  - Pages with an extra text frame that overlaps the body text frame

  Blank pages at any position:
  - Manual page break
  - Page break in paragraph format or as paragraph override, or
  start: top of page setting
  - Table or graphic frame anchors (set to 'below current line', if
the table/figure is large enough that the table and anchor, plus
any paragraphs with 'keep with next' settings above the anchor,
  don't fit on the page)
  - tables/graphic frames that are too large to fit on a page
  - Tables with too-greedy Keep with next/previous settings
  - Tables with straddled columns
  - Pages with disconnected text frames (or no body text frame at
  all)

RE: Blank pages

2014-03-12 Thread Fred Ridder
And note that the Next Available option can only be chosen when you are
setting pagination from the *book file* window. FrameMaker keeps separate
file-level pagination properties in each component file and book-level
pagination properties in each book file that use the components. Next
Available has no meaning in the single file context (because there is no
preceding file), so it's not available in the menu.

Another possible cause of Pam's problem is that pages that have no visible
content may not be truly empty from FrameMaker's perspective. For example, any
page that has had a specific non-default master page applied is *not empty*
because it contains a master page specification as a property. Manually placed
frames can also cause problems even if they are empty of any content because
they still exist as objects on the page.

And if Pagination is set to Double-sided, even with Delete Empty Pages
before saving, you may get an empty page if the following file in the
book is set to anything other than Next Available.

comprehensive list of causes of blank pages?

Does anyone have a comprehensive list of the three? five? FM settings
that can cause blank pages?

Every once in a while I need to clean them out of an inherited

Blank Pages in Online Help

2008-12-15 Thread Erin Easter
Hi,

I found an topic in the list's archive about blank pages showing up in
online help, which is a problem I'm having. The answer posted didn't
really help so I thought I'd repost the question with a few more
details. I'm using FrameMaker 7.1 and WebWorks Publisher to generate
both Webhelp and MS HTML Help. A blank page shows up after every single
topic. The problem is that these blank pages are part of the navigation
so previous and next buttons go to them and will go to page not found
error if you just remove them.

I have checked all the settings in FrameMaker to make sure blank pages
are a removed and the Double-Sided 1st Page Side setting is set to Next
Available. Does anyone have any idea where these blank pages are coming
from? Below is the original post I found in the archive:

Are you setting the pagination in the individual files or in the book

make sure there are no blank pages remaining in the topic files. Even
with Remove Blank Pages set, blank pages may remain if they contain
invisible items like empty frames or text lines, or if they use any
master page other than default left/right.

Since WebWorks doesn't do anything to your FM files (except read them),
I assume these blank pages are in the MIF files that WebWorks creates in
the project's Temp folder. So why do you care about their pagination?

If those blank pages are really empty, they have zero effect on the
help output and are completely irrelevant. You shouldn't even be aware
of them, since you shouldn't be doing anything manually with those MIF
files.

Maybe I'm not understanding the issue. :-}

re: Blank Pages in Online Help

2008-06-13 Thread meg miranda
I ran into a bug recently where I saw no blank pages, but they appeared in a
PDF generated using automated scripts.
Here was what happened:
template 1 ws converted to template 2 and then template 3 using Framescript.
Somehow the framescript introduced a bug in one of the tables whereby content
in the table was duplicated on 2 pages.  This was only apparent in the Frame
document when you highlighted the entire table.  The table had to be deleted
and re-created. Then the mystery page went away.
Depending on what you are using to generate online help, I could see the tool
adding the blank page because the ending chapter paragraph tag is empty, or
because like you say you have the doc set to print double-sided.

adding blank pages without affecting page numbers

2007-09-19 Thread Milan Davidovic
I'm working on a legacy doc (unstructured; Frame 7.2); the author is
no longer available for consultation.

In the Frame file, I have six pages, numbered x of 6. I have a PDF of
this file (the previously approved and released version, which I am
now revising); each of these pages is followed by a blank page. Let's
assume that these are needed -- I don't know why, and there isn't time
to find out.

Does anyone know of something I can set up in the Frame file so that I
don't have to remember to add the pages in Acrobat? As far as I can
tell, the addition of blank pages was done manually. I tried adding
Disconnected Pages in Frame, but it affects the page count.

Many thanks.

The blanks were probably added in Acrobat, not Frame...

The only way you could fudge it in FM would be to manually set the
page numbers, which I think would be more bother than it's worth.
It'll take you about 93 seconds to do it in Acrobat...

Re: adding blank pages without affecting page numbers

2007-09-19 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Milan:

For a small number of pages that won't reflow as you edit (for
example, you edit page 4 and it flows to page 5, causing page 6 to
create a new page 7) you could create a book file and divide the
original file into one-page files. Set the pagination to Make Page
Count Even, then assign a starting page number to each component file.
Look up the topic Page count across a book in FM Help, for the
technique to achieve page n of xx pages.

Re: adding blank pages without affecting page numbers

2007-09-19 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Milan,

If you are always adding a blank page after each of the existing pages, you
could have an Acrobat JavaScript script add them to the PDF file. Everytime
you make a new PDF file, you would run the JavaScript script on the PDF
file.

You could also use FrameScript to postprocess the PDF file and add the
pages.

But if you only have 6 pages and you are not going to make the PDF many
times, you might be better off adding the pages to the PDF by hand.

In the Frame file, I have six pages, numbered x of 6. I have a PDF of
this file (the previously approved and released version, which I am
now revising); each of these pages is followed by a blank page. Let's
assume that these are needed -- I don't know why, and there isn't time

Hi Milan,

Here is a FrameMaker solution you can try for fun (at your own risk).
Assuming you don't anticipate much page flow and you are using unstructured
FrameMaker, try this:

1) Open the document.

2) Press Esc p z and click Freeze.

3) Put your cursor at the bottom of each content page and press Return until
a new point page is added.

4) Go to each of the new, blank point pages. Choose Format Page Layout
Master Page Usage and apply None master page to each of the point pages.
This will suppress the point page numbers.

Before you get too excited, check the document carefully. You may encounter
any of the following problems:

* Autonumbers will reset in each of the text frames.
* Tables that break across pages will short circuit the page numbers.

You can reverse the frozen pages by choosing Esc p z and clicking Unfreeze.

Hi, Milan:

You don't need to make a book within a book; just break the six-page
chapter into separate files and set the numbering and pagination as I
suggested earlier.

If it's a long book with many pages, the suggestions to add the blanks
in Acrobat are probably most efficient.

The blanks were probably added in Acrobat, not Frame...

The only way you could fudge it in FM would be to manually set the
page numbers, which I think would be more bother than it's worth.
It'll take you about 93 seconds to do it in Acrobat...

Look up the topic "Page count across a book" in FM Help, for the
technique to achieve "page n of xx pages."

One possibility is that upon generation of the book the penultimate index page
has a lone trailing empty paragraph on it (the end of flow marker would be
visible) and that page makes the page count odd for the file. If your setup is
to make page count even for that file, then Frame would add an additional page

checked the settings for both the Index and the file that follow it?

Blank pages [WAS: Framers Digest, Vol 5, Issue 23]

2006-04-05 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
I think the problem here is that with technical manuals you are
addressing people of different ethnic origins, languages etc. Many
foreigners can read the "English jargon" they have learned that
relates to their jobs and interests, but may have problem reading
regular text or "jargon" relating to other technical fields such as
publishing and printing.

I have had questions from several people: "What does pagination mean?"

"Intentionally Left Blank" serves the purpose of indicating in words
comprehensible to most that there is no contents missing on that page
-- that the page is not blank by accident, s.a. duplicate paper feed
etc. So if we want to change this the text must be replaced by some
other text easily understandable by foreigners that have only minor
general konwledge in English.

Blank pages [WAS: Framers Digest, Vol 5, Issue 23]

2006-04-05 Thread Yves Barbion
A page with "Intentionally left blank" on it is a contradiction in terms: as
soon as you put this phrase on the page, it is no longer blank, or is it?

;-)

If you want to get technical (and literal), sure it still is. It is
necessary to remember context. The context of the manual is, let's say, how
to install a wizzie. That page has no wizzie installation content,
therefore, it is blank. The "Intentionally left blank" statement is only
describing the state of the page, not the state of the content.
