RE: freebsd-questions Digest, Vol 174, Issue 4

2007-04-17 Thread Joshua Lewis

I tried to access the login prompt through SSH, and Telnet. Neither
worked. The only way I know of to get to a login prompt is through
   HTTP.

I am not a programmer and my scripting skills are non existent. If
anyone knows of some script out there on the net that can access a
webpage and run through a sequence of passwords. Then that would be
   absolutely wonderful.

Mental note. It sucks to not have a phone. Don't work on phone system
   while drinking.
   Sincerely,
   Joshua Lewis

You could make resolv.conf to what you want it to be and then do: chflags
schg /etc/resolv.conf

That will stop anything from modifying it, if you're in securelevel 1 or
more you can't take schg off, you need to reboot into securelevel 0.

Other than that, check the ppp man page for an option...

OP Hi Vladimir,

I have FreeBSD 5.4 installed. There is a working jail.
I am trying to rebuild a kernel to enable quota support. Therefore

start. When i issue at the command prompt:
 jail /opt/jails/www.myhost.ru/ [14]www.myhost.ru xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx /bin/sh
 i get:
 jail: jail: Invalid argument

There is no messages in log files regarding jail.
After rebooting with old kernel everything is normal.

OP I can not say much about your problem - but 5.4 is a little bit
OP outdated. Is it possible for you to make an update to a newer
release?
OP 6.2 would be a good deal.
OP There are very cute rc-scripts to start/restart/stop your jail(s),
too.

No, it is not possible :(

Do i need to perform any actions with the jail when upgrading a kernel
or the jail must work without any changes?
Is there some sort of a Howto about this?

I have two drives connected to a PCI ATA100 card. When I went to
install FreeBSD I see three drives. ad10, ad8 and ar0.

I am guessing this is some kind of Raid so used FreeBSD's auto config
option for that drive and installed it on that one drive. Did I just
install a Raid 1 config?

I guess my question is what exactly did I just do?

My shell mysteriously changed. I don't know what port changed the shell
but how do I put it back to normal. I liked how when I was logged in or

I have a percent sign and when I try to change the shell with chsh I can
not get it to work anymore.

I am doing chsh -s /bin/sh is that correct? Is that the default BSD

That is what I have. I got it out of the handbook. however I may have

This is a good point here. Whereas it's good to have
something familiar for immediate productivity, it's
also good to explore different options to experience
benefits/drawbacks that you hadn't considered before.
In *nix (includind BSD's and Linux), you're not
limited to one window manager. You can install
several and use whichever matches your mood at the
 time.
I used to use KDE and Gnome simply because the menus
contained so many applications that were new to me.
Once I knew which applications I wanted to use, I
switched to XFCE because it's faster. I still use
XFCE for my office productivity; but I'm still
experimenting with icewm and windowmaker on an older
computer because they feel so much faster.
Definitely choose a window manager that will give you
a positive experience now; but take time to browse
*nix's other offerings. If you don't try new things,
how can you make an informed decision?

Corrupt pkgdb

2006-07-27 Thread Joshua Lewis

I am setting up a new system and ran a portupgrade -a. Unfortunately I
also in my arrogance tried to run XDM while the portupgrade was
running. Well to make a long story short I could not exit out of XDM
and get back to my console and had to reboot the system. Now I get an
error that my pkgdb is corrupt when I try to rerun the portupgrade.

Is there a way to rebuild that DB or do I have to reinstall the whole
OS? I don't know how that pkgdb gets created so I don't know if it is
created during the install or when I installed portupgrade.

   Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

Replacing windows XP at home.

2006-07-26 Thread Joshua Lewis

I have a hard question to ask and I realize that there are a thousand
   answers to this question.

I am replacing my XP system with a FreeBSD 6.1 system. I finished
installing it last night and cvsuped. Now I need to choose a window
   manager.

There are what seems like hundreds of different WM in the ports
collection and there is no way I will be able to find the time to read
them all and get any kind of good idea on what each one does.

I am hoping a few people form the list could e-mail me what they like
   and for what reason.

I want something lean and fast but I want to have my cake and eat it
to because I do want something that is not strait up ugly and is
   functional.

KDE seems like it is bloated so I was considering Gnome. I have also
been reading about enlightenment and it sounds interesting. I have
looked into Fluxbox and it also seems like it would do the trick.

Would I be better off just going with Gnome or KDE? I realize once I
start installing apps that I will probably wind up installing
something that uses Gnome or KDE libraries so I am going to wind up
bloating my system any ways right?

Thanks for any and all suggestions.
   Sincerely,
   Joshua Lewis

   There is a:

   /dev/ad0s1c

   /dev/ad0s1d

   /dev/ad0s1e

   /dev/ad0s1f

I treid to mount all of those last night.

   mount /dev/ad0s1f /mnt

   I also tried

   mount -t ufs /dev/ad0s1f /mnt

Same results every time. The device is busy.

I use a program called epinfo to rename my images, it is part of the

SCP!

2005-12-12 Thread Joshua Lewis
From what i gather scp is a pull type method (for lack of a better term) I
use scp from the computer I want the data pulled to.

My problem is I am at a Windows XP system using putty and I can't pull

So how do I sign on to freebsd and then scp the folder to the windows
machine? more like a push.

Any thoughts? Sorry if I seem abrupt I in a bit of a pickle.

scp can push or pull. You just don't have a sshd running on your
windows machine, so pushing back to it isn't possible. What you
want is a version of sftp or scp for Windows, to allow you to
pull from the remote host. On the PuTTY website, two such tools
 are available, pftp and pscp.

 You can download them here:

Startup scripts question

2005-04-18 Thread Joshua Lewis
How do startup scripts work?

I added:

mysql_enable=²YES²

But I don¹t think it is working. I had rebooted my system the other day and
my mail server stopped working (postfix reading from mysql tables) and I
tried looking at my running processes:

ps ax |grep sql

and nothing was returned. So I guessed mysql was not running.

I tried:

mysql start

and I got a socket error. I usually get this error when SQL was not started
properly. So I ran

/usr/local/etc/rc.d/mysql-server.sh start

And low and behold it was all working. So how do startup scripts work. Did I
add the wrong value to my /etc/rc.conf file?

Or did I miss something somewhere?

Does the entry in /etc/rc.conf correlate to the startup script. Should I
change my rc.conf file to read

mysql-server_enable=²YES²

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks for your time.

MONO (.NET) on FreeBSD and Apache2

2005-04-14 Thread Joshua Lewis
I really want to get Mono working on a FreeBSD Apache system. I have done
lots of searching and have not figured out how to get it properly
configured.

I merged the BSD# ports with my local ports collection

I did a make install clean from /usr/ports/lang/mono-devel

That installed mono 1.1.6_1

Then I also did a make install clean from /usr/ports/www/mod_mono and
tride to configure my httpd.conf the way they did on some tutorials
online. But /var/log/http-error shows errors about misconfiguration.

Does anyone have a working example of to configure mod_mono in Apache?

I also read about some XSP or some other type of web server. I think it
was written entirely in C# and was wondering if that is a better way to go
rather then Apache. I prefer Apache and would rather get it working rather
then switch to a whole new web server.

Make sure your permisions are ok on your /var/run/clamav/ directory,
clam av usually creates it's own sock file. Check the path specified in

You're right, building the world is building all the base binaries.
It should be done while you're building the kernel:
 # make buildworld
 # make buildkernel kernconf=CONF
 # make installkernel kernconf=CONF
 # make installworld
 # mergemaster

Here's a good guide on everything you need to do to update your machine:

If your supfile was set to RELENG_5 then you getting 5.4-PRERELEASE is
correct, as -STABLE becomes the next -RELEASE, so on and so forth.

Which mail server is the best for me?

2005-04-03 Thread Joshua Lewis
Gosh could you have picked a harder question? That is like saying Blondes,
Brunets or Red Heads?

You will have to read up about several MTA¹s and figure out what suites your
needs. It will take a good few hours of reading and if you are anything like
me with a wife job and three kids then time is precious. So to try and help
you get on your way don¹t use sendmail. I am partial to Postfix although
with that said I have never used anything else. I did several days worth of
reading and Postfix was my choice due to it¹s ease of use, flexibility and
security.

Ease of Use:
If you are only receiving e-mail for FQDN of your box (/etc/rc.conf)
then right after you have finished installing Postfix you are ready to go.
It uses sensible defaults and is a breeze to work with. At that point you
will be using local system accounts and MBOX format. You ought to read about
the benefits and drawbacks or both to decide if that is really what you
want. MBOX is easy enough to change however changing your logins to use
something other then the local /etc/masster.passwd database takes some extra
finagling. Again the how toos are a great help.

Flexibility
Now with that said I am hosting e-mail for several of my web customers.
So I wanted to set up a MySQL back end to manage the domains instead of
using text files.

Security
I also wanted to add additional security and installed TLS and SASL. As
well as quota¹s so my users don¹t suck up all my disk space. So I took it to
the next level and it took quite a bit more time to setup.

So if you want a MTA that will be a breeze to setup but can have the
flexibility to use more features you can shake a stick at while maintaining
the KISS process (Keep it simple stupid). Then Postfix is a good choice.

There are A LOT of how too¹s on postfix out on the net. Take a look at the
documentation on the postfix website postfix.org. The how too¹s and the
postfix documentation are separate pages on their site.

FTP server on 5.3

2005-03-16 Thread Joshua Lewis
I was trying to setup an FTP server last night on my 5.3 box. I was using
the handbook and was instructed to make a new user ftp. So that worked
fine and I was able to upload to ftp's home dirrectory but wanted to know
if I can safley delete the .* files in his home dirrectory.

I was also curious, if I change the permissions on /home/ftp to 755 then
people will be able to read but not write to the dirrectory (do they need
x permission to download a file?). But how do I make it so everyone can
read but only certain users can write. My goal would to not use local
accounts but pull usernames and passwords from a MySQL database. I would
rather not transfer the username and password in clear text.

Any thoughts or how toos I can follow?

FreeBSD Mail Server

2005-02-17 Thread Joshua Lewis
Do I need to have a *_enable=YES line in my rc.conf in order to start my
courier-imap-pop3 and courier-imap-imap servers? Or do I have to enable
inetd?

I have been pulling my hair out for weeks trying to setup my first mail
server using how toos from high5.net and workaround.org.

I have tried to look in /var/log for any log files that could indicate why
I can not pick up mail. But I don't see any log files at all so I suspect
they are not running. The server accepts mail fine I just can't pick it
up. I don’t know if it matters but I am trying to setup virtual domains
with no local system accounts. Including the domain of the computer it’s
self. Does that affect anything? Again I can accept e-mail fine so I don’t
expect it does.

I can't figure out if courier is running. I recall a command like ps -aw
|grep imap but I don't think I am using the correct switches because I am
not getting what I am expecting.

If someone could tell me how to see what servers are running on my system
and let me know if there is a special way to start my pop3 and imap
daemons, I would be very grateful. Ultimately I would like to use the ssl
versions of pop3 and imap.

But I can not find any documentation on how to start courier at startup
and I am wondering if I have to enable inetd. I was told that inetd is a
big security risk. So would like to avoid that if possible.

I have asked this question elsewhere and have not received any responses.
Any suggestions are very welcome and appreciated.

Yup. The full set, if you include the secure versions too is:

 courier_imap_imapd_ssl_enable=YES
 courier_imap_imapd_enable=YES
 courier_imap_pop3d_ssl_enable=YES
 courier_imap_pop3d_enable=YES

inetd is not the right way to start these ports.

Then to start them up without a reboot, do

 /usr/local/etc/rc.d/blah.sh start

But you do need the rc.conf entries first.

Windows Network drivers in FreeBSD

2004-11-08 Thread Joshua Lewis
Hello list,

I have an MSI K7N420-Pro motherboard. It is based on the nVidia 2 chipset.
I would like to make the onboard network card work in FreeBSD.

From what I have read 5.3 has the ability to use MS drivers in FreeBSD
(Very cool). Is there any documentation out there from someone who has
successfully done this?

If not is there any information about how to try and make this work.

Yes I could just go get another network card but I would like to avoid
this as I want to move this system to a 1U rack.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

I have managed to find an answer to my own question. In case anyone else
wants to get an nForce2 Ethernet card running in FreeBSD 5.3 here is what
I found

1. Start where you should always start. With the Handbook and the Release
notes.

2. In the Handbook I found in the Glossary Project Evil (I also found a
little info in the 5.3 Announcement).

3. The goal is to get MS NDIS drivers to run in FreeBSD using was they
have dubbed NDISulator.

4. Do a search for NDISulator on Google or go to
http://www.xl0.org/FreeBSD/ndis.txt to get instructions on how to install
the Windows Driver in FreeBSD.

5. Step five may involve prayer. I will know after I test tonight.

Thanks for the reply Chuck however I think you misunderstood me. Or

When I mention having things on seperate drives I was refering to my SQL
databases and web pages and such each on thier own drives (money
permitting also raided to other drives.)

But no right now I am looking at installing everything on one drive. I
have actually already done it wil no problems so far. The system is using
the ro0 driver and I think I am good to go. I wasn't sure if there were
optimizations I should be aware of or utilities or anything. This is my
first drive set ever. So I am looking for any tips.

The block sizes question seems to only apply to a striped drives. It was a
seperate question and even a seperate thought all together.

Using RAID-1 mirroring of two partitions on a single drive doesn't make a
 lot
of sense: it will greatly slow down performance without gaining any real
 improvement to reliability.

What blocksize you should use depends somewhat upon the files you use, and
 is
best determined by benchmarking your expected load using the data you
 have;
that said, normally a small blocksize will work fine if you have lots of
 small
 files.

Highpoint RAID HPT374

2004-09-16 Thread Joshua Lewis

I know what a block size is but I don't know what the benefits and
drawbacks are to larger vs. smaller block sizes.

On a normal desktop I would always say go for the smallest block size.
FAT16 or FAT32 I would choose FAT32 as it allows for smaller blocks sizes
and other benefits. I realize this is not a discussion on Partition types
but I was using it as an example.

Any thoughts?

2004-09-14 Thread Joshua Lewis
I don't think I have set up Bind9 correctly and I was hoping someone could
point out any mistakes I may have made. I have tried to follow the
examples in the handbook. I even bought DNS and BIND from O'riley.

I don't really know how to troubleshoot a DNS issue yet. I know of the
tools I just don't understand them yet. I have a MS DNS server running
fine as my secondary and when I try to troubleshoot it I can't tell if I
am getting a response from my MS system or my FBSD system.

Ultimately I would like to make this bind system my primary. Once that is
done I have made arrangements for an off site system to act as my
secondary for redundancy and I can eliminate the MS system all together.

Should I post my config info here or is that just a real bad idea? I mean
anyone can get what they want from the internet I just don't know if
posting it here is like inviting someone to crack my system.

Also I currently only have one FreeBSD system. I am trying to run multiple
services on this one system Mail, DNS, WWW, SQL. It is a pretty beefy
system and will have no problem handling the load. I just want to hide the
hostname of the system when I can. I only have the one customer hitting

DNS config problems

I only have the one customer hitting
the system and it is a real small company. This system is overkill for
them so I am trying to utilize the system to the best of my ability. I
know in a perfect world I should have them each running on separate
systems however that is not feasible right now. I was thinking of getting

BIND9 REPLACE BASE BIND8

2004-09-14 Thread Joshua Lewis
I have been having been having some issues with BIND that have been
driving me up the wall. I believe I may have located the problem. I
believe I had both BIND8 and BIND9 installed on the same system. So I am
reinstalling from the ports collection and overwriting BIND8 completely.
I wish to avoid this issue in the future. I found this in a how to
online and was wondering if it is accurate.

if you plan on upgrading your base system, add NO_BIND= true to /
etc/make.conf to keep 'buildworld' from blowing away your current BIND
install.

For one thing there was no make.conf in /etc. Then the other thing is
the syntax looks odd to me. I would have thought it would be
NO_BIND=TRUE as this is the syntax I have seen in rc.conf. Could
someone set me strait?

Thanks

This has been dealt with a lot of times already.

The base system is Darwin. Darwin is derived from FreeBSD.

Here is a clipping from apples own site. If they are misleading people
take up your gripe with them.

The upgraded kernel, based on FreeBSD 5.x, provides optimized resource
locking for better scalability across multiple processors, support for
64-bit memory pointers through the System library and standards-based
access control lists. The system enhances network services via a
next-generation launch daemon and centralized application logging. Tiger
also features command-line access to Spotlight for searching application
metadata and enables many common UNIX utilities to

Do a search for FreeBSD on Apple's site and you will see pages and pages
of FreeBSD references in OS X.

One, I thought OSX had a OS9 compatibility layer of some sort. Is this
 wrong?

Thank you for stating the obvious. Yes, there is Classic. In addition, yes
it sucks. If you take the time and re-read, the subject it says Unix
fonts on OS X the classic thing was more of a grip (I apologize to
everyone. The mailing list is not a place for grips). I wanted to know if
anyone had tried or knew if FreeBSD Fonts would work in OS X, as they are
a kin to each other.

But hey thanks for not helping at all. Hope you have a good weekend.

Scheduled system backups program

2004-08-19 Thread Joshua Lewis
I have a customer who has learned the hard way (the very hard way) that
backups of your corporate data are imperative.

Well now that I have spent the last three days trying to recover their
data I need to implement a backup plan for them.

They only have a few drives for backup (two 40G and a 160G) up so I would
like to make a full backup this week and then schedule incremental backups
from now on.

The two 40G are probably going to get striped together and the 160 is
going to be a dedicated backup.

They do not have any tape drives only hard drives and to top it all off
they only have Macs. They are using a dedicated Mac running OS 9.2 acting
as a server.

I was hoping I could upgrade that system to OS X and I was wondering if
there are any FreeBSD utilities that would work for backing up. Otherwise
I will be setting up a freebsd backup server and I would like to save the
customer the money and not have to go that route.

I am sorry for the many OS X questions I have been posting here over the
last few days but the Darwin mailing list did not respond. Does anyone
know of a good OS X mailing list I can join?

Removing the ports dir to start all over

I figured I would just clean out the ports dir and start over. However I

ports tree. And the man for rmdir only has a -p switch.

/etc and /usr/local/etc directories

2004-08-12 Thread Joshua Lewis
I have decided to take the plunge and try out 5.2.1. I figure it will be
5.3 soon and I like the idea of upgrading at that time. So I am going to
start fiddling with it.

The first thing I am noticing is when installing apps from the ports
directory my config files are getting put into /usr/local/etc instead of
where I am used to /etc.

I am guessing this by design and wanted to confirm this.

Is this a config setting somewhere? It is fine in the /usr/local/etc
directory but if it is a config setting then perhaps there are other
settings that have changed that I have not encountered yet. I would like
to read up on the changes.

While I am on the subject. Are there any other differences between 4.10
and 5.X that will take me by surprise?

I read through the Release notes on FreeBSD.org and it never mentioned the
/etc directory thing. So perhaps there are some other items I should keep
my eye out for.

Re: Replacing Bind8x with Bind9

2004-08-10 Thread Joshua Lewis
BIND 9 requires a good source of randomness to operate.
It also requires configuration of rndc, including a
secret key. If you are using FreeBSD 4.x, visit
   http://people.freebsd.org/~dougb/randomness.html for
information on how to set up entropy gathering. Users
of FreeBSD 5.x do not need to perform this step. If
you are running BIND 9 in a chroot environment, make
sure that there is a /dev/random device in the chroot.

The easiest, and most secure way to configure rndc is
to run 'rndc-confgen -a' which will generate the proper
conf file, with a new random key, and appropriate file
   permissions.

I guess I really need a bind9 on FreeBSD doc. That can answer all my
questions. I can't find anything that suites my needs on ISC.ORG. Has
anyone come across a well written bind9 doc?

I purchased the Complete FreeBSD book and several others they however
don't cover Bind9 nor does the handbook. I bought the BIND9 and DNS from
Oriley however that will be a few more weeks of reading. I am in need to
get BIND, POSTFIX, MySQL , APACHE, installed quickly. Any sources of well
written docs are welcome.

Windows X

2004-07-20 Thread Joshua Lewis
I am a new user to FreeBSD. Is Windows X an extremely basic windows
program. I
loaded your CD that I purchased from Microcenter onto my computer and I
was not able
to see anything except a very primitive windows program. If this is what
is then
I'm fine with it, but if there is more how can I get to it?

Christopher,

Xwindows by it is lonesome is a might boring for my taste. I guess you
should first be asking yourself what is it you will be doing with the
system you are setting up:

Will you be running this as a server and are simply looking for an easy
way to interface with the system?

Are you setting up a desktop replacement?

If you are setting up a server will it be accessible from the Internet or
is it simply a local system?

If you are setting up a desktop what will be your top 5 main uses?

SERVER:
If you are running a server, then the obvious (I didn't like the answer
when I first started either) is do not install X. It takes a lot of disk
space, it does slow down the system, and more software means potentially
more security vulnerabilities.

So why not only run X when you need to actually need to use the system.
Sure, you set your system to not have X running at startup (this is the
default) and only start it when you need it. However, you are still
wasting space, there are still potential security risks, and honestly
running the system from a command line is not all that hard. In addition,
you can telnet into it from your desktop so you would not need a
Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor.

If you decide you must run a GUI because you are unfamiliar with CLI or
you just like them better pick one of the lighter weight window managers.
Yes, they are boring but you do not need a fancy desktop on a Server.

DESKTOP:
If you are planning on this being a desktop replacement then I can fully
understand wanting to have a cool desktop. KDE is very popular as well as
GNOME. You can see screenshots on their respective websites.

KDE has a cool feature that if set up allows you to pick your window
manager on login (mind you this causes KDE and X windows to be running at
all times). This would require reading chapter 5 in the FreeBSD Handbook.
This is arguably you greatest source of FreeBSD information. It is a short
chapter to read but does explain quite a lot. I myself had to read the
chapter more then once before I fully understood it. Now I feel very
comfortable using X. No expert but I feel very comfortable.

The one you choose is up to you. I say play with as many as you can and
see which one fits your needs better. You can find many personal opinions
online as to which display manager is better. I have no desire to be
labeled a troublemaker so I will not give my opinions on the subject.
There are also several sites dedicated to customizing the look and feel of
the various window managers.

The community can correct me if I am wrong but applications built for KDE
will run fine on GNOME and vice versa. I think they just may not look as
pretty as they use different API's or something. They still work they just
need their associated libraries and you are good. Therefore, if you fall
in love with the KOFFICE application but prefer the GNOME desktop, I don't
think there is a problem with that (you can also install OPENOFFICE.).

Well enough said. Good luck.

Thank you,
Joshua Lewis

Hello everyone,

not able to ping any other system on the net, my ISP's DNS server nor the
ISP's Default Gateway. I am able to ping my system by FQDN and just the
host name from the FreeBSD box.

Ping error for the DNS server ping is:
ping: sendto: No route to host

Ping to the ISP Default Gateway
ping: sendto: Host is down

However I am able to ping the above addresses (Including my FreeBSD
server) from my XP box.

Network setup.

FreeBSD (Static Public IP) - Linksys 5 port switch - Switch - DSL Modem

XP box - Linksys Router (Different Static public IP)- Linksys 5 port
switch. - DSL Modem (All is working fine from here)

This IP was purchased several months ago so it should be setup. Perhaps
there is something wrong on their side. Is there a way I can prove it?
Below is the information I have collected.

I have listed in my rc.conf my ISP's Default Gateway, my IP, my subnet.

My /etc/resolv.conf shows
domaindomain (there is no hostname on this line)
nameserver127.0.0.1
nameserver (ISP DNS SERVER)
nameserver(ISP SECONDARY DNS SERVER)

I have checked the spelling and confirmed the IP's in the resolv.conf are
correct.

I didn't set it up but my /etc/hosts file has my loopback and FQDN listed
twice. I have no idea why
::1localhost.domainlocalhost
127.0.0.1localhost.domainlocalhost
MY IPFQDNhostname (there is no . at the end of this FQDN I don't
know if that matters)
MY IPFQDN.(there is a . at the end of this FQDN and no hostname
listed)

And that is all I know how to do so far. It looks right to me. Perhaps
someone can see what I missed or did wrong.

Sorry for covering up some of the info. I don't know who is out there.

Do you think my DNS server is not really working and the system is simply
looking up my addresses in my hosts file?

Any help is welcome.

I just tried to ping the External IP of the Linksys Router and was
successfully. This is leading me to think it is something on my ISP. Does
that sound right to anyone else?

Do you hear people say they feel completly stupid becuase of what the

Well if you don't you do now.

After paying better attention to my startup log a little prase saying no
carrier stuck out this time. I checked my new switch that I bought for my
new setup and it looked fine. But something didn't feel write so I started
at the switch for about 20 seconds when I relized my switch shares the
uplink port with port 5 and that happens to be the port I plugged the
FreeBSD system into. So I moved the cable to a different port and viola.

Thanks as always for everyones advice. I learn something new every time I
talk to you guys. netstat -rn is pretty cool. Now I will just need to read
the man page to figure out what those flags mean.

Routing Training Books Please!!

2004-07-13 Thread Joshua Lewis
After many years of waiting my company has a position opening up that I
can fill. I spoke with the Net Admin and asked if there were any one skill
that would be of a great benefit to my company and his response was
Routing, IP and subnetting (ok so more then one. But I swear he can
count).

So here I am with maybe a month before they make a decision and I am
thinking I should beef up on my skills.

I am hoping someone out there may know of some GREAT (free, I am a poor
slob) resources for Routing. I have exactly 0 experience in Routing. I do
however have a Cisco 1700 at home to practice with.

I could use some IP and subnetting refreshers so I am open to suggestions
there too.

I am sorry to bother everyone. I have had such great help from the FreeBSD
community since I started running it at home I thought maybe someone out
there may know of a good place for me to start.

Re: I downloaded everything to no avail! ISO's fail to burn

2004-07-13 Thread Joshua Lewis
Hi everyone, I am not sure how this works or if I will ever get feedback.
Anyway I just discovered FreeBSD yesterday. I read all about it and I am
excited to intrigue myself with this new pc adventure. Sounds great and I
will learn something about code at the same time. I feel it had a kind of
old school feeling to it, at the same time cutting edge technology. I am a
believer in it's viability over Microsofts Windows. They love to hide
information from us not inform us.

Welcome Jerremy to the FreeBSD community. I am taking it on myself as a
fellow new user to say It is a pleasure to meet you and you are in for one
exciting ride. FreeBSD is the greatest Operating System I have ever
experienced (Holly cow I sound like a salesmen). You obviously have the
curiosity to get yourself started. If you also have the ability to search
for answers in the very abundant FreeBSD resources on the net you will
have a great time.

The reason I am writing. I downloaded the 5.2.1 IS0's. I burned the boot
disk successfully it seems. But I tried to burn the first big ISO file and
it failed to burn. Some type of burn error following the track or
something. Then I tried that other download that isn't the ISO but the
regular files. That wouldn't do anything either. It burned but I can't
instal it. That doesn't boot. Or install in anyway.

I had a problem with 5.2.1 as well about two months ago (I think) I was
using Nero and had a problem burning the disk. So I downloaded the ISO
from another server and then was able to burn fine (Oh and I happened to
switched media as well). Then I started having a problem booting to the
Burned CD. I took the liberty of pulling an old 48X CD drive (I was trying
to use my LiteOn CDRW drive) and was able to boot to the CD. However, I
then experienced some other issues that I think was due to the new ACPI
features in 5X and the fact that my system does not support PS2 or other
legacy devices so I was having a problem disabling the ACPI functionality.
I then made the incredibly wise choice to switch to the 4.X branch and
about 5 days later 4.10 came out. I downloaded 4.10 and installed and have
been having a great time ever since.

Since you are new I would recomend not to follow 5.X until it is in a
-STABLE branch (Perhaps it is and I am just misinformed someone correct me
if I am wrong). Unless you need some of the specific new features then 4.X
is the way to go. That is my humble opinion. I think SMP was added or
updated, and ELF either was added (I read something yesterday that Says
4.X has ELF support so maybe someone could clarify)

The 5.X branch may give you some headaches for a newcomer. Trust me 4.10
is just as cool and incredibly stable. If you are the kind of guy (like I
was until about 30 days ago) who thinks the cutting edge is the better way
to go. Then you will have a great time. The FreeBSD community is always
added greater and greater functionality at the cost of stability at times.
4.10 was release as I said like a month ago or something. It is still very
new.

I am wondering if FreeBSD is actually free or is this a way to get us to
order the retail box lol. I don't want to feel that way. Yestersay I was
so excited about this. I hope you can enlighten me some.

FreeBSD is totally free. Donations are always welcome and I am sure they
are graciously excepted. Personally I recommend that you drop the 30 bucks
and get yourself a FreeBSD book like FreeBSD unleashed. Although you
really do not need it because there is an abundance of information out
there for FreeBSD. The Handbook is the best place to start and it totally
free. It explains so much. I would like to see some more realistic
examples in the handbook but hey, I guess if I want it I ought to update
it and submit it to a committer.

I found www.n0dez.com/freebsd and www.freebsdportal.com were a great place
to find lots of links to FreeBSD sites. FreeBSD is a fabulous OS however
there is no point to have it if you do not do something with it. Once I
had it installed I kind of looked at my screen like what next. So the
links I went to from there led me to the resources I needed to get my
Postfix mail server, Bind 9 DNS server, MySql server, and PHP up and
running. Now I need to look for some info on Mono (Unix .NET equivalent).

Good luck I hope I helped answer any of your questions. I say try
downloading from another FTP server and possibly if you have one another
CD drive.

Well they will when I get home and tell them the good news.

Thompson, Jimi
 Josh,

I found several on google that look sensible. See if these don't help
you. Your employer should probably be willing to purchase a reference
book or two. I'm not sure what kind of gear you're running at work, but
you can get a good feel for how things work by playing with routed on
 your FreeBSD box.

 Subject: Routing Training Books Please!!

After many years of waiting my company has a position opening up that I
can fill. I spoke with the Net Admin and asked if there were any one
 skill
that would be of a great benefit to my company and his response was
Routing, IP and subnetting (ok so more then one. But I swear he can
 count).

So here I am with maybe a month before they make a decision and I am
thinking I should beef up on my skills.

I am hoping someone out there may know of some GREAT (free, I am a
 poor
slob) resources for Routing. I have exactly 0 experience in Routing. I
 do
however have a Cisco 1700 at home to practice with.

I could use some IP and subnetting refreshers so I am open to
 suggestions
 there too.

I am sorry to bother everyone. I have had such great help from the
 FreeBSD
community since I started running it at home I thought maybe someone out
there may know of a good place for me to start.

Ftp server near me

2004-07-10 Thread Joshua Lewis
All documentation tells you when running CVSUP or installing FBSD from FTP
to use the FTP server closest to you.

So how do you determine the best server. I recall reading a post that said
run a command that will determine the closest server or fastest server near
you. I however lost the page I printed out and can't remember the web
address.

Any ideas how to find the fastest server near me?

 main.cf doesn't get postmaped.
 only the .map files do.

unless its changed since i last upgraded.

I have never set up Postfix. In fact I have never set up any e-mail
server. I am following a document titled:

Creating a Stable Secure FreeBSD MailServer

found on http://www.bsdhound.com

You can tell about half way though the Author (Soup4You) had two to many
beers so perhaps the postmap was a mistake.

I will not postmap the main.cf file.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my question and for setting me
strait. Your help was welcome fast and friendly. I love this community.

Building a Stable Secure FreeBSD Mail server

2004-06-26 Thread Joshua Lewis
I have located what I feel is a very complete document on Building a
Stable Secure FreeBSD Mail server (That happens to be the name of the Doc
too. Go figure)

I am not sure what the age of this document is. In the document it reads:

I like to change the default algorithm used when encrypting a user's
password to the blowfish algorithm, as it provides the highest security at
the greatest speed.

Is this an accurate statement? My current passwd_format is set to md5 and
I thought md5 was like Da Bomb(Ok white guy trying to be funny here).

I am still pretty new, so I don't know the difference between these
different algorithms. Any thoughts, comments, personal preferences (along
with an understandable explanation would be nice) are appreciated.

The MTA is PostFix

Document date is 10/17/2003

So it is not to old. So far it is pretty accurate.

dave
 Hi,
What mail server was this doc dealing with and can you give me the
address? Some clues as to the age is what version of fbsd was being
discussed, currently 4.10 is production stable while 5.2.1 is new
technology, even though i use that on my production systems.
Not sure as to the difference between md5 and blf password hashing, i
 do
know that they both are methods of encrypting a password and supposedly
 blf
is more secure but it also doesn't have compatibility with anything else.
 HTH.
 Dave.

asuming that you have done the whole fdisk/disklabel/newfs you can list
the contents of /dev thus, ls /dev to find out. It will be ad1s1d oassume
 something like that

I do have several ad1* devices in /dev but I can not mount them. So I
asume they are just there to be there?

Why would it be ad1s1d? If the whole drive is being used wouldn't it be
ad1s1a?

VPN server

2004-06-08 Thread Joshua Lewis
I am looking for some recomendations for a powerful (yet simple if
possible) VPN server.

At present I will need to only have access to one other network in a
different office running Win2K PPTP. Hopefully I will need to expand in
the future to other networks that may or may not be MS based.

I would like if possible for the connections to be completly transparent
to a user. Best case senario is the user signs on to thier FreeBSD (I am
in a mixed network so there are a few XP systems also) system and opens up
an application (or browse to a share on the other network) that connects
to the other network and it connects without any more user intervention.

LOL I am not asking much am I?
