If I am not mistaken, you can guide your bike through the curves by
listening to the direction of the crowd, though it seems overly subtle.
Is there a key to get your speed in the game? This would help a lot

You have to shift up a lot to keep your engine from exploding. Its hard.
Especially after you get past the second turn. That's where I have
 trouble,
I hit that second turn and I'm going so fast that I grind into the rail
 no
matter how hard I turn and my bike blows up. Its definitely challenging.

I get as far as Marge starting to speak and either my engine explodes,

otherwise...

- Original Message -
Hi,
I have so far jumped 8 successfully. Here is the process:
S
P
O
I
L
E
R
1. press up arrow to get into gear, before touching the control key.
2. Hold the control key down from now until you reach the second turn.
3. When your speedometer reaches 75, 125, 175, etc. then shift up with
the up arrow.
4. continue through the curves, trying to stay near the left side of the track.
5. When you hit the second turn, release the throttle
, and shift down to get into the propper gear. However, don't shift to
quickly, or you risk exploding your engine.
6. remember what the announcer said was the approximate speed required.
As you approach the ramp, pay attention to your speedometer and engine pitch:
6.1. Shift into the correct gear for the speed you need.
6.2. Adjust your speed so that you are at the multiple of 25 nearest
the speed you need, and either speed up or slightly from there. It's
usually possible to get a fairly good idea of your speed if you listen
to the pitch of your engine. Keep pushing/releasing the control key as
needed to maintain that speed.

While this method is not foolproof, it will work most of the time if
done correctly.

Re: [Audyssey] Homer on a Harley

2007-11-27 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Thomas,

I did not want to make the game too easy. It is a rather simplistic game. You
know it was like the first or second video game that I ever played. So I did
want to make it challenging. I kind of figured that some would have totally
beaten the game already. The record has to be somewhere in the low thirties.
So far I've only gotten to 15.

You do not want to hold down the control key for very long at all before
pressing the up arrow key. It is safer to press the up arrow key first, but
sometimes I like to hear the burn out and I think that you can build up a
little bit more speed that way.

You do want to press the up arrow key to shift to the next gear somewhere
around 75 mph and every 50 mph after that.

It is always good to use the left arrow key to get near the inside of the
track. That way when the turn comes you can slide out a bit and not hit the
outside garde rail.

Hi Shadow Dragon,

Sounds like you are doing pretty well. The one thing that you might want to do
is, after the first turn use the left arrow to get near the left garde rail.
That way when you slide out a bit in the second turn you have a way to go
before hitting the outside garde rail. Of course you want to hold down the
left arrow as soon as you hear Lisa.

Hi Che,

No, I did not put in a key to announce the speed. Mostly because I do not have
time to press one while lining up to the ramp and getting my speed correct. I
think that mostly it is learning what speed you are going in each gear by the
sound of your engine and the speeds that it does announce.

Thanks Che. I know that this game would be so so much easier with a joystick

I made it over the first two busses, but it is surely not easy.
If I am not mistaken, you can guide your bike through the curves by
listening to the direction of the crowd, though it seems overly subtle.
Is there a key to get your speed in the game? This would help a lot
especially approaching the ramp, but perhaps that is a great part of the
challenge, guessing and aiming at your speed.
Overall though, I dig it myself, I definatly have to do some more
 practicing though.
Thanks Jim, keep up the good work.

You have to shift up a lot to keep your engine from exploding. Its
 hard.
Especially after you get past the second turn. That's where I have
 trouble,
I hit that second turn and I'm going so fast that I grind into the rail
 no
matter how hard I turn and my bike blows up. Its definitely
 challenging.
I'll have to play around with it a little more, so far though I haven't
 made
 it past 1 single bus.

I get as far as Marge starting to speak and either my engine

Hi William,
I would not go as far to say the content is totally different from the

companies are less likely to see the game as a serious threat since it
has low market value to begin with, and it has no graphics so sighted

[Audyssey] Shades of Doom was Hi

2007-11-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello Hunter,
I don't know where you heard level 8 is timed, but it is not from
everything I can tell. I've played that game in and out and have never
found any reason to believe any levels are timed. The only tricky thing
about level 8 is the teleporters. One will take you into area 9 and the
other will trick you into teleporting to the beginning of the game.
Personally, unless I am in a hurry to end the game it is sort of fun
teleporting back to area 1 with all that armour and weapons it is pretty
much a cakewalk. It is kind of cool walking into a room with an unarmed
mutant and wiping them out with the automatic bolt gun or the laser
pistal. The Mutants are like, Haven't I seen you before? You go, Say
goodbye you blank! Add your own perfanity. You open up and they are
like, Holy crap...!
Anyway, SOD is one awesome game. Perhaps not true Doom quality but close
enough to have fun with it.

[Audyssey] Moderator subject lines.

2007-11-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello list,
This is a friendly reminder from your moderators to please remember to
give your emails quality subject lines that accurately describe the
subject matter you wish to discuss. This is important for two very good
reasons.
One, many people do not read messages that do not seam to be of any
interest to them. So if you are asking a question about Shades of Doom,
Monte, whatever and you have a subject like Hi, Hello, A question For
You, etc many people in a hurry will pass the question by because they
don't know what the message is about and may not have time to scan it
for content. I myself usually pass up messages that appear not to have
any interesting content. I get on average 200 emails a day between two
email accounts. As a result i am one of those who can't read each and
every email so I go strait for the ones that seam the most important and
trash the rest.
Second, everything we write on list is archived for future access. If a
gamer wants to research the archives for an answer to a puzzle he or she
has with a game a good subject line will help him or her identify the
email of most help to him/her. A really great walkthrough of Shades of
Doom could be in the archives but if it is filed under an anonomous
subject like Hello then the researcher will have much more difficulty
locating it than if it was given a subject like Shades of Doom
Walkthrough or SOD Walkthrough.
Also often times subject matter thends to change during the course of a
thread. When that happens it is good list practice to rename the subject
line to reflect the new topic. For example, if you are talking Monte and
Raceway comes up in the topic maybe a new subject line could be Raceway
was Monte.
So please remember to give each and every email an appropriate subject
line that describes in a few words what game and topic the email relates to.
Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Homer on a Harley

2007-11-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
Yeah, you certainly made it challenging. I am sure I will tinker allot
more with the game after Christmas once the holiday madness dies down. I
really like the Simsons theme, and it is a cute little rainy day game.
I've also got Sarah to explore in depth once Draconis sends me my key
and I have several hours of uninterrupted time to play.

Jim Kitchen wrote:
 Hi Thomas,

I did not want to make the game too easy. It is a rather simplistic game.
You know it was like the first or second video game that I ever played. So I
did want to make it challenging. I kind of figured that some would have
totally beaten the game already. The record has to be somewhere in the low
thirties.

[Audyssey] More about Monte bosses.

2007-11-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi everyone,
A couple of days ago a couple of you were asking about my views on
bosses in Montezuma's Return. I did some digging on exactly how the
higher levels were handled and found out something interesting about the
classic Montezuma's Revenge, and the good news is this should be easy
enough to add to the game. In the classic game after level 7 monsters
became completely invincible to swords, and you couldn't find any more
swords on those levels. It was basically run like heck, get what you
can, and try and make it off the level as fast as you can.
Since this is so strait forward and a piece of cake and easy as pie this
is the bosses answer I think we all were seaking. It is not a
triditional boss, but it is true to the original game, difficult, and
you beat the bosses not by killing them, but staying alive.
I can add a super boss skull, Montezuma, which is invincible and super
deadly. What do y'all think?

Re: [Audyssey] More about Monte bosses.

2007-11-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,
I don't think so. Based on what I have read levels 7 through 11 don't
offer swords or any other weapons. If you had one from a previous level
it wouldn't work. As a result it forced the gamer to use a different
strategy like use speed and ajility to avoid monsters, and in our
version use a potion not only for restoring health but to employ your
own invincibility magic to protect yourself in dangerous situations.
I am going to add one boss, who you can't kill, and using a potion or
multiple potions may be your only way to save yourself from him.

just skip it unless you are out of amo.
in level6 you will get a longrange laser.

How much time do you get?

[Audyssey] Kingdom of Loathing help

2007-11-27 Thread Bryan
Hi all,
I need help again with Kingdom of Loathing. I'm having trouble with the boss
bat quest. I've found him but I can never seem to hit him. Worse, he does
enough damage most times to kill me instantly. Any hints?

Re: [Audyssey] More about Monte bosses.

2007-11-27 Thread Dark
Well, a nice, symple idea, but perhaps you could considder some extra sound
effects, and or extra enemy types for the invinsible enemies? That way they
would seem more like bosses, and less like normal enemies which have been
mysteriously enhanced in one section of the tomb with respect to another.

so for instance, instead of snakes, skulls and spiders, have gold skulls
(making a clanging sound), spitting cobras (wwhich obviously make spitting
noises), and scorpions.

I know this would involve coding some extra sounds, but imho it'd give the
game some nice variety, and explain exactly why some enemies were invinsible
to swords.

It'd also allow you to have levels with both invincible and non-invincible
enemies, for example, sticking an invincible Scorpion just before the
exit of a lower level as a final obstacle to out run, - a bit like a
boss, but not precisely a boss.

to actually have Emperor Montizuma himself return in skull form would be
incredibly cool (the title of the game, either return and revenge always
slightly confused me), but imho there should be a litle more to the
confrontation than just jumping a skull and legging it onwards, -
perhaps something for one of those expantions you mentioned.

Beware the Grue!

Hi

I do think that would be a good compromise for this version.
Later on if you want to get all out with the bosses then that's what V2
could be done for. I personally don't care for this hang up of bosses but
that might just be me.

Hi Charles,
I don't think so.

Re: [Audyssey] Monty

2007-11-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Yeah, those platforms can sometimes nail you when least expected. Just
last night I was battling my way through level 4 when I attempted to
jump onto the platform spanning the lava pit. Well, no sooner did I
start the jump and the platform vanished. Needless to say I went
screaming head long into the lava.
Then, on level 4 this morning I was trying to cross the fire pits and
that platform vanished while I was standing on it and sent Angela
tumbling into the fire. So they can be deadly if you stay on them too
long, or don't time your jump just quite right.

Either that or a more simple idea for 1.0 is not to make those enemies
invincible, but merely restrict the players access to swords. That means
the player will have to save a few from some of the lower levels if
he/she wants to kill anything from level 7 on.
After all the player can have only a maximum of 5, according to the
unstable release, so that won't carry you through for very long on
higher experience levels. That basically means if you are fully loaded
you have exactly one sword for each following level if you decide to
save them for that purpose. Either way it presents an interesting challenge.

Good point. perhaps in the last room there is a stash of swords you must
obtain in order to defeat Montezuma's skull. Since he will be the boss
skull you will have to use all 5 swords you get to kill him. Mean while
he will be attacking you with his secret weapon. Currently I am thinking
of a lightning bolt or something that comes out of the skulls eyes which
will of course be extremely deadly. An even cooler idea is since he is
the bosss skull let's asume that your invincibility from the potions
doesn't work on bosses. Only on other monsters. That means you are going
to have to battle one on one your swords against his lightning eyes.

Re: [Audyssey] More about Monte bosses.

2007-11-27 Thread Michael Feir
In the origional game, after you pass all of the levels, you start again but
with everything continuously getting harder. You could keep playing
indefinitely until you eventually got killed. Is that going to be in this
version of Monty? Also, what about bonus levels? They're just like ordinary
levels now. In the actual game acording to the Atari manual, you had to jump
and climb up or down ropes to get at jems floating in the air. I can't
remember whether that went on for as long as you could avoid falling from
the ropes or whether it had an end point.

 Hi Dark,

 Quote
Well, a nice, symple idea, but perhaps you could considder some extra
 sound
effects, and or extra enemy types for the invinsible enemies? That way
 they
would seem more like bosses, and less like normal enemies which have been
mysteriously enhanced in one section of the tomb with respect to another.
 End quote

Either that or a more simple idea for 1.0 is not to make those enemies
invincible, but merely restrict the players access to swords. That means
the player will have to save a few from some of the lower levels if
he/she wants to kill anything from level 7 on.
After all the player can have only a maximum of 5, according to the
unstable release, so that won't carry you through for very long on
higher experience levels. That basically means if you are fully loaded
you have exactly one sword for each following level if you decide to
save them for that purpose. Either way it presents an interesting
 challenge.

 Quote
but imho there should be a litle more to the
confrontation than just jumping a skull and legging it onwards, -
perhaps something for one of those expantions you mentioned.
 End quote

Good point. perhaps in the last room there is a stash of swords you must
obtain in order to defeat Montezuma's skull.

 Hi Charles,
I don't think so.

It seems that floating gems were in one of the beta versions we've worked
with, weren't they? There was one somewhere. Also, a neat idea on what you
mention about the game starting over and getting harder would be that you
can start the game on the easiest skill level and, after you finish, it
starts on normal. If you make it to the end, you start on the next level of
skill and so on.If you finish on the highest difficulty, you beat the game.
You would not play indefinitely, but I think it would be a good feature.
This could be a toggle at the beginning of the game in that you could either
use this method of play or not.

version of Monty? Also, what about bonus levels? They're just like
 ordinary
levels now. In the actual game acording to the Atari manual, you had to
 jump
and climb up or down ropes to get at jems floating in the air. I can't
remember whether that went on for as long as you could avoid falling from
the ropes or whether it had an end point.

Well, a nice, symple idea, but perhaps you could considder some extra

 they
would seem more like bosses, and less like normal enemies which have been

Either that or a more simple idea for 1.0 is not to make those enemies
invincible, but merely restrict the players access to swords. That means
the player will have to save a few from some of the lower levels if
he/she wants to kill anything from level 7 on.
After all the player can have only a maximum of 5, according to the
unstable release, so that won't carry you through for very long on
higher experience levels. That basically means if you are fully loaded
you have exactly one sword for each following level if you decide to
save them for that purpose. Either way it presents an interesting
 challenge.

perhaps something for one of those expantions you mentioned.

Good point. perhaps in the last room there is a stash of swords you must
obtain in order to defeat Montezuma's skull.

[Audyssey] orneriness - Re: More about Monte bosses.

2007-11-27 Thread Charles Rivard
Orneriness can be doing something for fun that some would consider

some of the fairness out of the game?

2007-11-27 Thread Dark
Well Tom, I'd be moderately more in favor of the different enemy types idea
if possible, -- sinse as I said, it adds variety (particularly if we
ever get that map creator to play with), but restricted use of swords would
work as well.

As for the lightning idea, well it sounds fun, but instead of loading you up
with swords before the fight, how about having several swords hanging around
Montizuma's skull, wich you need to grab and use on it yourself,
all wile jumping over his lightning attacks? That would imho be a A more
dramatic and challenging fight, and also could make for some interesting
plot perhaps the only weapons capable of defeating Montizuma's skull
are his own magical, royal swords.

Beware the grue!

[Audyssey] sod 2 guide

2007-11-27 Thread shaun everiss
Hi.
Well the sod2.0 guide is being compiled to vorbis as I type this.
The guide has changed a bit.
There is a little bad language, but I think only 2 or 3 words, so its for those
that are well people that don't get offended by the occational thing.
There are errors in the audio guide.
Because of the state of the hardware I use I was origionally going to have 2
files.
The first an ingame recording with my mic and headphones the second using my
digital recorder on my sub woofers.
After listening to files I found the ingame file was ok.
Now I am going to submit this to audiogames.net,
I will do this after I do the compile.
Oh keep the old 1.2 text guide as I will not be doing another text guide.
At least notfor now.

 Hi Damien,

If you are flipping your Harley over, it is because you are revving the
engine up too high before you put it into gear. You do not even need to
rev it up. Once Homer says Look Bart I'm driving just press the up
arrow key and then hold down the left control key. But you can hold down
the left control key for a short period of time before you press the up
arrow key to put it into gear. You can also just play with the control
key but let your engine come back down to idle before putting it into
gear. Again though you do not want to hold maximum rpm for too long or
 your engine will explode.

You have to shift up a lot to keep your engine from exploding. Its hard.
Especially after you get past the second turn. That's where I have
 trouble,
I hit that second turn and I'm going so fast that I grind into the rail
 no

I'll have to play around with it a little more, so far though I haven't

I get as far as Marge starting to speak and either my engine explodes,
I flip my bike, or I hit the guard rail. Basically, I suck at the game.
I'm having major difficulty playing it which is unusual for me.
