Hi Valiant, Hmmm, you are the first to report not being able to hear the Harley over the crowd. I do know that the crowd does get loud when you are right against the garde rail, but otherwise I hear the Harley much louder. You could try turning down all of the sounds and turning up the sapi speech. That way you would at least hear your speedometer. HTH BFN Jim Every crowd has a silver lining. Re: [Audyssey] Puppy1
Hi Damien, I'm sorry to hear that your sapi5 text to speech engine is not working. You could try going to the control panel and speech to set your computer's default voice to one of the Microsoft voices like Sam, Mary or Mike and then running the DelUserLex.exe file from my site. Another fix that I have heard of is to go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech Then, press enter on Sapisvr.exe. It won't say anything, but it should correct the control panel entries for Sapi. And another fix that I have heard of is 1. Put your xp cd in and, if you have autorun turned on, hold down the left shift when the disk tray is closing, holding the key until the disk stops or slows. 2. Open the c:\windows\inf folder and highlight the sapi5.inf file. 3. Press the applications key and arrow down to install and press enter. 4. When you get the message saying file needed sapi.dll, go to browse and point to and open the i386 file folder and press enter on ok. 5. Go to ok on the install procedure and press enter and you're done. Or you could put your windows XP CD in and do a system repair as the sapi5 text to speech engine is part of the Windows XP operating system. Oh yeah one other thing that I have heard is that the program Total Recorder seems to mess with the sapi5 text to speech engine. I hope that some of that might help. Hi Charles, Puppy1 does have a joystick configuration feature, so yes I can switch the gas and brake peddles for diving and climbing. But using foot peddles for that as compared to pushing the joystick forward or pulling it back or using the up and down arrow keys just seems strange, or at least takes some getting used to. Still though the steering wheel part was cool, but I like the joystick better for Puppy1. TGIF and BFN Jim I be nibble, you be quick, he jumped over the Joystick. Hi Charles, Yeah, maybe Pong was not much of a computer game, but for the first ever computer game etc it was and still is played one heck of allot. Re: [Audyssey] Unbeatable games
Hi Charles, Actually, Pong pre-dates the era of personal computers. The first electronic Pong game was for the Atari 2600, and it consisted of a drab gray screen, two black rackets, and a black ball you and your buddy batted bak and forth. It definitely wasn't much to look at, but I guess it had some real success when it first came out. Now, days there is a version of Pong for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS. I personally have never been a fan of the game myself, but there are still plenty of people out there who like it. As for pinball games I still like those. Especially, the tables where you can break things like bottles, windows, and other things. I had this sighted pinball game where you played on a table that looked like a kitchen, and if the ball hit the ketchup bottles they would make a nice smash sound as they shattered. Another one, I think the Alien Invasion table, your ball looked like a laser beam and when it hit a UFO on the table the UFO would make an explosion sound. Really cool stuff that. Charles Rivard wrote: Not sure if it is the same thought, but people played Pong on their computers when it was first introduced, and it wasn't much of a game. How about pinball tables? They're fun, though. Unbeatable games are fun, as long as they are unbeatable in the sense that there is no end to them, rather than the fact that the game always wins a contest against you. A beginning chess player would soon get tired of playing against a grand master, but could, if he or she made the right moves, beat that grand master. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Hello folks, After 2,5 years of absolute silence, we have planned to release Top Speed 2.1 at the beginning of September. With 2 new cars, 5 new tracks, a new exciting surface type, a heavily changed menu and more we don't talk about at the moment, we hope you will enjoy playing Top Speed as never before. Also, there are lots of bugs fixed. But before the release, we need your help. Since it's hard to create cars for Top Speed that are realistic and high quality, there are only 2 cars added. That's not enough, so it's your turn to build a realistic and qualitative car. Send your car in a zip-file with a good name and description to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The best car we received before the first of September will be integrated in the game. Happy building! Re: [Audyssey] Unbeatable games
Hi Bryan, Definitely. The classic pong didn't really have sounds. Just the typical beeps and boops of classic vidio game history. Pong and Combat have got to be the most symplistic games ever made, but they were fun at the time they were created. It is only now, 30years later, we can look back and laugh at the primative crap we use to call state-of--the-art technology. I was reading something on the vidio industry and back in the 1970's people were saying Sony's beta tapes would be the vidio cassette standard for many years to come. They said that VHS tapes would fail, they are to big, no body wants a bigger, tape, and that VHS would never replace beta as the home vidio cassette standard. Just a couple of years later VCRs were selling several more units than beta machines, home movies were being released in VHS format, and the rest is history as they say. The thing hear is technology changes so fast that we are hardly aware of what is coming next. Just before dvds came out VCR makers started releasing Super VHS, and the 8 millimeter machines were just starting to gain some ground in the VHS market. Next thing we know dvd players came out, and both Super VHS and 8 millimeter formats never made it to the home movie rental stage, and now that dvd recorders are pretty cheap VHS is all but dead except for those few who won't give up their old technology. This same kind of thing has happened to the vidio game market. it is hard to believe in the late 70's people were playing simple black and white games such as Pong and Combat. In 1982 games like Packman were in 16 colors, had superior graphics, and the game play was better too. By 1985/1986 Nintendo had graduated to its own console and blew Atari away with graphics, color, and game play. It didn't hurt some of the original NES games like Mario, Megaman, Castlevania, Double Dragon, etc has some kick butt music to go with the graphics and improved colors. All and all it is hard to believe how much stuff has changed just over the course of my life time. This stuff is constantly changing, and one day we will be looking back at our 3 GHZ systems laughing about what slow useless crap they are. We will be running a 30 GHZ system with 200 GB of ram , and a 40 terabit drive, laughing about the days when a 3 GHZ system, with 2 GB of ram,and a 300 GB drive, was cool. [Audyssey] Moderator delayed list messages.
hello fellow listers, This is just a note that the list moderators have recieved reports some of your messages are very slow in reaching the list. At this time I am unaware of what exactly is the cause of the delays in message traffic, but I am not without a theory of what might be going on. Over the passed few days message traffic has been unusually high. As a result the message cue for mailman, which makes sure all messages get directed to where they are going, is probably having trouble keeping up with the message load. I haven't proven this theory yet, but it is a likely cause for delays in message traffic. In any case the messages do eventually get delivered, but not necessarily the very second after they are posted. I'm writing this to make you aware if you check your email and the post you just sent doesn't arrive don't panic, rewrite a new post, or email us wondering what is wrong. You should probably give your message at least 24 hours to clear mailman, and you can always check the message archives to see if it has been recieved by the mailman system. If mailman has recieved it and it is posted in the list archives be assured it will sooner or later find its way back to you and everyone else. If it is undeliverable for some reason you should get an email back from the system stating message was undeliverable for reason x. Thanks. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] text adventures
Hi, There are a lot of interactive fiction games, coming in all flavours and genres. Fantasy, science-fiction, romance, and so on. They are mostly puzzle-like, and require a great deal of time, determination and imagination to complete. There are some interpreters such as, WinFrotz (which loads files with the extention of .zip, .z5, .z8, .zblorb, and so on), WinTads or HTML Tads (which open files with .gam extentions), Adrift, Atari, JACL (the language I work with), and much much more. If you are looking for a list of games, though, you can go to two best places on the net: First one is Baf's Guide to the Interactive Fiction Archive at http://www.wurb.com/if and the second one is Interactive Fiction Database, http://IFDB.tads.org which has a great list of interactive fiction, with recommendations and ratings from other users. If you want to play any of the games in any platform and you want the interpreter, these four can be played, but they require you to use your review curser (jaws curser in Jaws, and WindowEyes curser in Window Eyes). Anyway, the four that can be played most easily are: JACL games (with .j2 extentions), Tads games (with .gam extentions), adrift games (with .taf extentions), Inform games (with .z5, .z8, .zblorb and etc extentions). If you need more information or the interpreter for any of these, please feel free to contact me off-list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hope this helps! --- Contact info: Skype: parham-d MSN: fire_lizard16 at hotmail dot com email: parham90 at GMail dot com - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, August 07, 2008 10:47 AM Subject: [Audyssey] text adventures What text adventure games can we play using wich interpreters? --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Puppy1
Hi Jim, I have tried going to the control panel, and not even the Microsoft voices work. I tried the deluserlex program, that didn't do anything. As for my Windows XP CD, I lost that ages ago. I tried the sapisvr.exe program as I was writing this email, and that didn't work either. There seems to be a critical error with it, since when I select a voice, or preview a selected one in the control panel, it comes up with the following error: Speech Properties This voice cannot be played. Please try selecting another voice or selecting a different audio output device. OK This happens with every voice I select, including Microsoft Sam, and I know for a fact that it's not my sound card, since screenreader speech and sound effects play fine. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] rail racer new verssion.
Hi, try this. First, start rail racer and backup your settings to the web. Quit out of the game when is done. Next, go to c:\program files\rail racer and delete config.xml. Now, unzip the files from rr153Update.zip to c:\program files\rail racer. You should then be able to load the game. Retrieve your settings from the web and you are good to go. ps: There is a pre tournament race tonight at 11pm eastern on daytona. Come join in the fun. 锦发/Steady Goh - Original Message - From: ian mcnamara To: Gamers Discussion list Sent: Saturday, August 09, 2008 4:54 AM Subject: [Audyssey] rail racer new verssion. hi all i have a problem with rail racer 1.53 the new up date i extracted this verssion and tried to run the game but it would not run so i went back and installed 1.51 so it would run again and now i am trying oto re install 1.53 it keeps telling me their is a password needed to extract the files. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Hi Thomas, Yeah, I played the heck out of Pong on my Atari 2600. Sure the graphics were very primitive, but it didn't matter, it was still a great challenging game. It even had multi player mode, hockey mode etc. But hey the ball was actually a little rectangle as was every thing on the screen back then. Well you know a rectangle or a combination of them. Like the car in Pole Position, the invaders and all in Space Invaders. Hi Charles, Yeah, I can't wait to play Pong with a Joystick. However I don't believe that is how I played it on my Atari machines. I believe that I bought special controllers. They were little hand held controllers with a spinner wheel and a button on the side They were actually two of those controllers per plug, so that four people could play Pong at the same time. Spinning the wheel up or down would move your paddle up or down. But I think that moving your Pong paddle left and right via joystick will make my Pong game lots of fun. After you get to level 15 or so you begin wondering when will the game be over. I intentionally just stop, because it gets tiring to keep blasting away at ducks and racking up huge scores. Now, that I look back at the classic NES I wonder what exactly it was about DH that made me play it all the time on the NES. Perhaps it is the introduction of RPGs, FPS games, that has changed my opinion of what is good and what is boring enough to qualify as watching paint dry. [Audyssey] Sapi problems was Puppy1
Hi Damien, I guess in order for us to solve your Sapi 5 issues I think it might be helpful, and try to find out how it got broke in the first place. For example, when I was trouble shooting Sapi 5 issues for Montezuma's Revenge I discovered if you install some speech demos, some third-party Sapi voices, and later remove them all of your Sapi 5 voices may stop working properly. In one case in point one of my customers installed some of the Cepstral voices, and when Cepstral upgraded to the latest Swift engine, he removed his older versions, and tried updating to the new voices. For whatever reason all of his Sapi voices stopped working. In the end I only solved his problem by talking him through a Sapi 5 reinstall from the Win XP recovery cd. As it happens it is events like that which has made me personally decide to drop Sapi 5 support in the next release of the game now known as Mysteries of the Ancients. My job is game technical support, not MS Sapi support, but you know how some customers are. If their machine is busted they want it fixed pronto so they can play the game they baught, and if their machine is broken they blame my game for their troubles rather than their cranky computer. Grin. Anyway, if you can help us out by telling us what you installed recently, if you have added any new Sapi voices recently, etc it would help out a bunch. Cheers. Damien Sadler wrote: Hi Jim, I have tried going to the control panel, and not even the Microsoft voices work. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Unbeatable games
Hi Jim, yeah, I remember that now that you mention it. I would imagine the reason the balls had that weird shape is do to the fact digitally creating squares and rectangles are infinitely easier than making rounded objects like balls, ovals, and other objects with a more rounded appearance. I'm no expert on digital graphics technology by any means, but I have now and then glanced at the chapters in my game programming books on creating 2D and 3D graphics and it is truly interesting stuff. Even though I am college educated, took geometry, trig, and all that good stuff that stuff was a bit more mathematically challenging than I cared to get into at the time. Grin. Re: [Audyssey] pong update - Re: Unbeatable games
Hi Jim, Yep, those are the controllers for pong alright. I remember them clearly. They were rectangle shaped, black, had two rackets painted on the top of them, and it had a black wheel you turned left or right to move your racket around on the screen. As I recall those same controllers worked really well with Breakout and Super breakout. You could use the wheel to quickly center yourself under the ball and bounce it back into the block wall. That was a cool game that was more challenging than it first appeared as well. Jim Kitchen wrote: Hi Charles, Yeah, I can't wait to play Pong with a Joystick.
