What I find interesting about these stats is that of the 1,051 messages, 577

onto the market, it's going to probably remain one of the most discussed
games in quite some time if the public betas are any indication. It's going
to be an awesome game for sure.

[Audyssey] Lonewolf

2010-11-02 Thread Richard Claridge
Hi all.
I have played Lonewolf for many years now, but haven't played for a
while. I installed it on my new computer and started it up. It must be
a newer version than I have played before as it never used to have
Sappy capability, or at least I don't think it did.
I use Hal and cannot get it to work like it used to with this
screenreader. I don't want to use Sappy if I can help it, is there
certain things I need to set in the options or is it just no longer
accessible with Hal.
Thanks
Richard

Re: [Audyssey] Lonewolf

2010-11-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Richard,
Well, as you can see the user interface for 3.5 has changed quite a
lot from 3.2 and earlier. The best I can tell Lone Wolf 3.5 was meant
to be self-voicing either by directly speaking text using Jaws or
Window-Eyes, and if you don't have one of those to use Sapi. Since
high quality Sapi voices are relatively in expensive that is the way I
play Lone Wolf. The screen reader I generally use, NVDA, doesn't work
with Lone Wolf either so Sapi is the next best thing.

Re: [Audyssey] Moderator warning was why?

2010-11-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
Well, to be fair to Jaws it isn't actually Jaws that crashes. It is
Eloquence that crashes when certain words are encountered in a
document. The same is true for Eloquence for Linux as Eloquence for
Windows.
Unfortunately, the general population isn't that technically minded
and probably don't know the difference between Eloquence crashing and
Jaws crashing. In fact, I've had the experience of training people who
didn't know the difference between Jaws and Eloquence. They didn't
understand that their screen reader, Jaws, and their speech output,
Eloquence, were separate programs. So some people are likely to blame
the wrong thing for the problem.

Re: [Audyssey] Lonewolf

2010-11-02 Thread dark
I'm afraid thomas is right here. hal has no trouble actually reading the
screen, but unlike all the configured voice options, cannot output game text
directly, so you end up being rather behind what is output as you try to
read it with vf.

For this reason, with Lonewolf, as indeed with most other accessible games
that work via directly outputting speech to a screen reader rather than by
on screen readable text, I would recommend using sapi.

In fact, sinse there are a variety of games like jim's which only! have sapi
as a choice of direct output, a good sapi voice is a pretty good investment
generally.

Ah, that makes sense sinse it's the synthg, not the screen reader which is
doing the actual speech output. i suspect were I to switch Hal to use
eloquence instead of Orphius, I'd probably get the same crash too.

[Audyssey] New here; saying hello

2010-11-02 Thread neophyte

Hi there,

I've just joined up and thought it would be seemly if I said hello.

I'm Neophyte and I blog at a site called In The Company of Grues. I'm
sighted but a couple of my blind interactive fiction peers have been
helping me gain a more complex understanding of accessibility gaming,
something I've been a quiet advocate of for a number of years in my work
within the games industry.

More recently, I started work on a couple of projects and was inspired to
join Audyssey.

I'm currently playing a few games from the 2010 IF competition and I'm
reading a great book called Wake, by science fiction author Robert Sawyer.
The book was recommended to me by a blind friend who used to play Eamon
games and interactive fiction.

Well, hopefully this all works. This is the first time I've used an email
discussion list.

Chat soon.

Cheers,

Neophyte

[Audyssey] Lazertag System

2010-11-02 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Folks,
Shawn last night described the accessible Nerf's 2PK Lazertag System,
at the Teck Talk room.
it uses two laser guns in the system and would allow both blind and sighted
people to play laser tag.

At Amazon two guns costs $55 but is on sale for about $40 right now.
I searched google for,
Lazertag System 2PK:

The guns speak and have gun sounds and when you aim at and hit the other gun
you get a report from your gun. But if your gun gets hit by the laser light
it vibrates.
You can set the gun for two difficulty levels, ten hit or 25 hits to finish
off your opponent.

You can also set it for outdoors or indoors.
I suspect it uses an infrared beam of light rather than a laser as infrared
is less expensive.

Here is the link, although it is long and may not work:

 Hi Dark,
Well, to be fair to Jaws it isn't actually Jaws that crashes. It is
Eloquence that crashes when certain words are encountered in a

In fact, I don't think I've ever come across single words that do.

Re: [Audyssey] New here; saying hello

2010-11-02 Thread dark

Hello and welcome.

It's always great to have someone showing an interest in accessible games,
especially someone working in the industry itself.

out of interest, which audio games have you tried particularly?

For more information on games and access, you can go to www.audiogames.net
or www.pcsgames.net which both have very extensive lists of accessible games
of various forms.

Myself, i've played many if games at various points, sinse I'm very much a
fan of exploration and plot in games, though i will freely confess the
riddle style puzles in many if titles tend to stump me.

i have however been a fan of textual rpg games for quite a while, in fact if
you can suggest any recently created games in this line I'd deffinately
appreciate it.

I have played several Eamon games sinse Eamon delux is workable with a
screen reader given a litle configuring, (though i wish the creator would
extend the program to cover more games and remove some of the bugs), and
also have most recently been playing the game fallthru.

I think the last actual Interactive fiction game I played was a demo of one
of malinch's commercial interactive titles.

Beware the Grue! (yes, this is my sig).

I've just joined up and thought it would be seemly if I said hello.

I'm Neophyte and I blog at a site called In The Company of Grues. I'm

helping me gain a more complex understanding of accessibility gaming,
something I've been a quiet advocate of for a number of years in my work

I'm currently playing a few games from the 2010 IF competition and I'm

I have played Lonewolf for many years now, but haven't played for a

a newer version than I have played before as it never used to have
Sappy capability, or at least I don't think it did.
I use Hal and cannot get it to work like it used to with this
screenreader. I don't want to use Sappy if I can help it, is there
certain things I need to set in the options or is it just no longer
accessible with Hal.
Thanks

Hi Will,
I kind of find that surprising coming from you since you are one of
the Mac OS supporters. You of all people know the importance of
getting a cross-platform engine and games out there on the market for
the blind community. I'm one game developer that whole heartedly
believes in a persons right to freedom of choice.
Anyway, as I've said many times on list already the cross-platform
version of the game is personally motivated and not commercially
motivated. I don't always use Windows, and I consider it my second
operating system and not my primary operating system. As a result my
priorities are vastly different from the huge Windows market out there
that have a GMA Tank Commander, Shades of Doom, Sarah, and dozens of
other good games for their platform of choice. What high quality
accessible games do we non-Windows users have?
As I have also said before it is not because Linux or Mac OS are bad
operating systems. Quite the contrary both have a lot to offer a VI
computer user. The access on both operating systems is rapidly
catching up with Windows accessibility and now is the time people have
a real choice in the software they want to use on their computer. VI
computer users are no longer bound to owning and using Microsoft
Windows because it is the most accessible option out there, nor are
we forced into paying hundreds of dollars on a screen reader like Jaws
or Window-Eyes. For the first time in history companies like Cononical
and Apple have addressed accessibility issues by incorperating a full
fledged screen reader, magnification software, etc into the operating
system itself saving us hundreds of dollars in access software alone.
All of this is well and good, but the majority of game developers, and
some users, are of a just release it for Windows mentality. They are
far too willing to surrender their rights to choice for convenience
sake. If I were not so passionate about this maybe I would cave into
popular opinion, but I am passionate about this. I really believe we
all have a right to have not only accessible games, but they should be
available for Mac OS and Linux just as they are for x number of
Windows users. Of course, that isn't going to happen, because there
are far too few developers that have a personal stake in the matter or
the skills to do what I do.
Sadly far too many accessible game developers have chosen to take a
strictly Microsoft path, and have adopted proprietary languages like
Visual Basic. Until they begin writing their games in Python, Java, or
maybe C++ there never can be games for other platforms. That's why I
have chosen to take a personal stand against that very problem.

Cheers!

Hey there, Dark, Ben and Thomas,

Thanks for the welcome.

To be honest, I haven't tried to many audio only games. I'm still trying
to get my head around the different types of screen readers and how they
work. I understand that the software and hardware are separate beasts,
each with their own little ideosyncrasies, but I'm looking to set up a
little e e PC laptop, which runs Linux, as a portable accessibility
machine. If you have any recommendations for rigging that up, I'd love to
hear them.

My real interest has been interactive fiction, although the idea behind
the Eamon games and text-only role playing games interests me, too.
Fallthru sounds good and I hope to check that out soon, but I am
wondering, wouldn't all the strange names for the races and creatures
wreak havoc with your screen reader?

Thanks again for the welcome!

Finally, this question to Tom: you used to run USA games, is that right?
Do you still have a company set up?

Cheers,

 Hi Will,
I kind of find that surprising coming from you since you are one of
the Mac OS supporters.

 Cheers!

 Hey guys,

It's not much, but pretty much every cut scene I imagine is a spoiler, so
it's pretty limited and may or may not change your mind on whether you
 want the game.

 Here it is.

 http://j.mp/aSMhCA
Personally, I think it's worth the $50. We don't have any games with story

and those people seeking a good story to actually play through and it's
not just written in a manual for background purposes, this is the game you

want. For those absolutely obsessed with online play, like most of the
console market who just wants to login and blow people and things up or
fight all day online, this may not be the game for you, as most of it
revolves around it's story. And when you finish it? Well, I hear an online

mode will be under development, but not for some time. But hey, it
wouldn't hurt to play through it again now would it? How many audio games
don't have replay value? Quite a lot. And how many of those games have you

played over a period of time? I'm sure it was more than once. So cut
Munawar a break about overpricing and all this crap, and start learning
the actual gameplay, so when you go online you won't get owned.

you're having a really fast run through and think you can get one of
the time bonuses by doing so.

Bombs tick, so skirt around them, and wherever possible try to be
where they're not. Sounds easy enough, but factor in the robot chasing
you and it makes for some pretty wiggly movement until the bombs are

Hth, I found the game to be seriously addictive considering there was
  nothing to kill lol

Chat soon.

Cheers,

Neophyte

The reason I have not yet put out the new patch is because I am making sure

Re: [Audyssey] New here; saying hello

2010-11-02 Thread Alfredo C

Welcome to our mailing list. May I suggest you check out:
http://www.audiogames.net. They have several information about the audio
games you are seeking for. Plus they have forums you can subscribe to.
Anyways, we are glad you are here. Smiles.

Chat soon.

Cheers,

Neophyte

Re: [Audyssey] New here; saying hello

2010-11-02 Thread neophyte

Hi Hayden,

Actually, I was more interested in a preferred screen reader; also
possibly wondering if I'm going to run into trouble by not having
dedicated speech synth hardware. From what I've read, having both is
important.

So far I've been recommended Speakup, but haven't yet got the chance to
check it out.

Cheers,

Neophyte

For linux specific, check out:
http://www.vinux.org.uk/

Basically a preconfigured implementation of Ubuntu, with Orca screenreader
running - there might be better options out there, but anyway...
