[Audyssey] For those using Dropbox on older computers

2016-04-26 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi all,

As some people use Dropbox for sharing betas and other game related things I
felt this was relevant to the list. Over the summer Dropbox will be ending
desktop support for Windows XP computers. On June 26, you will no longer be
able to download the desktop app on windows xp or create an account with it.
Then, on August 29, Dropbox will sign all XP users out of the desktop app
and they will no longer be able to sign in from that system. The account
will still be accessible from the online site or other devices.

Here is the page on dropbox.com with more info:

Re: [Audyssey] Playing games with a Bluetooth Headset

2016-01-12 Thread Karl Belanger
I know some older headsets could have significant lag. That said, with the two
headsets I've mentioned, I've played Blindfold Breakout, A blind Legend,
Bokurano Debouken 3, and even Mortal Kombat with no issues.

Yes, it is definitely possible. Any stereo Bluetooth headset should work. My
personal favorites are the LG Tone line for in-ear headsets and the Skullcandy
Hesh2 for a more traditional over-the-ear fit.

Is it simply a mod of the same game rather like the storm8 ones, or does it

If it is a mod, I can basically just rejigger the Lords and knights db page,

The same company also had several other games, has anyone tried those (they

[Audyssey] Paladin of the Sky: new audio RPG from VGStorm.com

2014-08-09 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi all,
A new audio game has recently been released. It’s called Paladin of the Sky,
produced by www.vgstorm.com. It is an RPG in the style of many of the games
from the 1990s and 2000s. The game has a very good story, a magic system which
involves some rather strict timing, dungeons to explore, hidden things to find,
and a quite excellent soundtrack.
Just to give you all an idea of how long this game is, I’m at 14 hours of
playtime and I haven’t finished the game yet. The game is well worth its $30
price tag in my opinion.
The game uses a new system of wall detection, where it plays a tone when you
are near a wall, and what pitch the tone is tells you what wall you are near.
This is nice in that you instantly know where openings are, and can easily
follow complex areas.
Check the game out at:
http://www.vgstorm.com/paladin_of_the_sky.php

Re: [Audyssey] Need Help with Level 9 of The Blind Swordsman

2014-07-25 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi,
The only tip I can give you is that when he does his series of attacks, there
will be ten of them, and then you will have a brief window to attack. The
timing between parries is tight, so I usually start mashing the down arrow as
soon as I hear him start yelling, until I hear the parry. Be careful with this
though, as jumping the gun by even half a second can get you skewered.

 Hi all,
After purchasing and playing a decent portion of the Inquisitor’s
heartbeat, I have some initial thoughts and impressions.
If you’ve played entombed at all, you’ll be very familiar with the basics
of this game. The game is essentially a series of mazes that you must
navigate through. The objective could be to find the exit, release a
prisoner, or avoid an enemy or hazard. There is no combat in the game. The
only non-walking things you do are pick up items and sometimes release
people. Once you’ve finished the level, the next one loads and your
progress is saved automatically. If you fail a map, get caught, burned,
etc., you restart that map from the beginning.
The game does have some creepy backgrounds, especially in some areas, and
the action music when you’re in danger is quite good.
As for replay ability, while I haven’t finished it quite yet, I don’t see
there being much in the main game. To address this, there is an infinite
mode, which generates increasingly complex maps for you to solve.
I’ll let you know more about my thoughts as to the storyline once I finish
 the game.

[Audyssey] Inquisitor's Heartbeat initial thoughts

2014-06-16 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi all,
After purchasing and playing a decent portion of the Inquisitor’s heartbeat, I
have some initial thoughts and impressions.
If you’ve played entombed at all, you’ll be very familiar with the basics of
this game. The game is essentially a series of mazes that you must navigate
through. The objective could be to find the exit, release a prisoner, or avoid
an enemy or hazard. There is no combat in the game. The only non-walking things
you do are pick up items and sometimes release people. Once you’ve finished the
level, the next one loads and your progress is saved automatically. If you fail
a map, get caught, burned, etc., you restart that map from the beginning.
The game does have some creepy backgrounds, especially in some areas, and the
action music when you’re in danger is quite good.
As for replay ability, while I haven’t finished it quite yet, I don’t see there
being much in the main game. To address this, there is an infinite mode, which
generates increasingly complex maps for you to solve.
I’ll let you know more about my thoughts as to the storyline once I finish the
game.

Re: [Audyssey] Space odicy, complex space fleet management game

2013-10-27 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi,
I started playing the game last night, and I like it a lot. The in-game notes
aren’t so much of a tutorial, more of the game telling you what the screen does
and giving some suggestions about what you might want to do there. I highly
recommend you read through the guide, as that explains things really well.
Designing ships is a tedious but fun process. Here is how I understand it:
First, you design a hull. This is the simplest process, simply naming the hull
and telling the game how much space, also referred to as weight, the hull has.
This number, along with the energy output of your power core, are the two
primary limiting factors when designing ships.
After you have a hull, you need to design a power core to fit in that hull.
This is done by entering desired weight of the core, and the desired energy
generation of the core. The more weight you devote to your power core, the
larger energy generation the core can have. If your core is underpowered, i.e.
the entered weight can support more energy than you have entered, the game will
show a fitting cost of 1000, written as 1.000 credits. If you are write at the
optimal number, the cost will be very low, only a couple credits. The more you
go over the optimal, the higher the price gets. This applies to all other
systems as well.
For armor, the tradeoff is weight vs. hit points, again, the heavier the armor,
the more hit points it can have.
For shields, the determining factors are both weight and energy cost. The
higher of both, the more absorption you can have.
For weapons, the limiting factors are again weight and energy cost, and the
things you need to decide on are attack and accuracy.
I Haven’t played with the Computer, Marine, or Special systems much, but I know
computer effects weapon accuracy and defense, Marine effects the number of
marines, used to board and repel boarders, gives space for additional marines,
and Special effects hit points, defense and absorption.
The guide recommends using half the weight of your hull for power, and saving
at least half your energy for the weapon.
Once you have the ship and systems designed, you first “buy fleet”, where you
select your newly designed hull and power core. Once those are purchased, you
go to “upgrade fleet” and add the systems you just designed. Once you have
design blueprints, you can reuse them on different ships, or put multiple
different configurations of systems into the same hull.
Once you buy a fleet, upgrade it, and resupply it with ships, you can start
doing missions and battling with it.
Hope this helps.

The only thing (apart from getting attacked by other players), that somewhat

annoys me about the game is the numbering system. Everything in the game has

numbers in the millions and billions, and the numbers are always written
1000.000.000, with separation of the didgits.

The problem is this means scansoft daniel reads them as didgits, and it's a

little bit of a pest keeping trakc of whether five six zero zero five four
three one zero nine is bigger than seven eight two zero, zero, five six
three one zero two, (not a major problem but I do wish they werre written
straight so I could get them pronounced as millions and thousands).

That's only a miner thing though, and there is a lot else good about the
 game.

I'm also currently investigating Astro galaxy, another game by the same
company in which you have just one ship and must explore planets and stars
around earth for resources. That's really! unique because of how it uses
actual concepts like calculating courses and writes all it's measurements in

au, sadly it's not quite as accessible due to a lot of unlabeled images on
 the system and galaxy maps.

 Beware the Grue!

 Hi,

Since I enjoy playing the original Change Reaction, I was very excited
about this new version of the game, and immediately bought it upon
reading the announcement on Draconis's Twitter feed. Actually, I first
downloaded the file from their website and installed it after first
removing version 1, and discovered, to my surprise, that there's no
playable demo! I know there's an audio demo on the site, but I couldn't
get it to play using their player, which I believe is Java-based. (I
personally don't know why developers have to use these players on their
sites. I think it's better to just link to an MP3 file so the visitor
can listen to it in their favorite player.)

Purchasing and registering the game was simple, but I noticed that the
information displayed on the screen when you're presented with the
registration dialog wasn't spoken automatically by JFW, or even a TTS
engine like it was in the first version. I had to use the JAWS cursor to
 read it.

After getting into the game, I listened to most of the tutorials for the
various game types. I personally would've prefered a manual like the
previous version had, but the Learn to Play option isn't bad, though I
noticed that if you move back a page with the Left Arrow, for example,
the speech tends to read something else, or at least doesn't seem to
skip to that section right away.

Now we come to gameplay, and this is where I'm really having problems.
(I should mention that I'm playing this game using Windows XP.) So far,
I've just played, or rather tried to play, the Classic mode. Either I'm
so used to version 1's gameplay, or I'm not doing something right in
version 2, but there are times things don't seem to work propperly. In
particular, I've noticed that speech doesn't get interrupted when
quickly pressing the Left and Right arrow keys, like in version 1. There
are also times when I don't get any speech at all for awhile, or else
I'll be on a coin, but the previous one isn't read out. As well, I might
press Space when I'm on a Penny, for example, which may be the coin I
have to match, and nothing appears to happen. No laughing noise or
anything! The first time I started noticing all this behavior, I thought
my keyboard was acting up, even though I had unloaded my screen reader
completely. I've even noticed that the sound you hear when a lit bomb
explodes doesn't play half the time. I might be on a bomb, and then I
hear the scream, but no proceeding explosion.

In conclusion, Change Reaction 2 might be a good game, but so far I'm
beginning to think I should've stuck with version 1 until these bugs
 were squashed.

 Thanks.

[Audyssey] Best controller for fighting games on Xbox

2013-04-27 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi all,
For those of you who play fighting games, what controller do you use? I've been
using the stock Xbox 360 controller for a few days, and am rather unimpressed.
I'm currently leaning toward the Versus pad from PDP, because it has great
reviews, and is on clearance for cheap. I've also been looking at the Microsoft
controller with transforming D-pad, but that one's a bit on the pricey side
right now, plus I don't really need the charge and play kit it comes with.
I'm at a bit of a double disadvantage because I'm used to playing street
fighter with a keyboard, so any controller feels clunky to a degree.
Any controller recommendations or other tips in this area would be greatly
appreciated.

Dark,
You haven't needed the iTunes program for a number of years now. I know for a
fact that iTunes files can be played in Windows Media Player, edited in

though that this is for music and podcasts only, movies and tv shows still have
DRM attached to them as they would anywhere.

itunes since I want the freedom to listen to any music or books I buy in any
compatible device, indeed since I've painstakingly sat and created a
configuration file for winamp which runs exactly with my desktop speakers,
obviously i'd prefer to use that.

As regards the comments about the community, the issue is not one of
copywrite or anything like that. if justin were still around and selling his
games, even if not updated I'd be the first person to support him, however
the issue is one of legacy. Justins games will not be around anymore, in any
way shape or form plane and simple.

This is something which sega, nintendo and mainstream companies got fairly
quickly, which is why game collections for more modern consoles not to
mention services like Wii virtual console, xbox live etc still exist, and are
the place you can still get all your old games, yes you have to pay for them,
but that is not the issue, (as I said, I'm the first to agree that developers
should sell their games). The same might be true of taped music going to cd,
or video casettes going to dvd. Yess, you might have to pay for the new
hardware format, but the thing is still available.

It is justin's unwillingness to make his games available and effectively
saying anyone who doesn't buy from me in the next month can't have them
which is the issue here, not his right to sell them or anything else. if
another developer were selling them, that would also be fine, but again that
 is not the case.

As to the community, well there are scumbags anywhere. I have noticed people
have a huge downer on the games playing community in general because of a
number of pirates. yes, there are people who believe that they are entitled
to steal a dev's work because they are blind, or the like, but please don't
tar everyone with the same brush since there are also plenty of people who
do! indeed wish to support game developement as wel.

I have I'm afraid noticed a tendenccy among some people to over emphasize and
sterriotype the community generally, and believe the worst of everyone's
motives because of some less pleasant individuals.

for example, as I have explained myself my issue with justin has nothing to
do with entitlement, being blind or anything else. I might feel exactly the
same if a developer of graphical indi games, or indeed an audio drama company
 behaved in the same way.

 Beware the grue!

[Audyssey] Change Reaction: finishing within the last second, and other thoughts

2012-12-21 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi all,
I've had a couple games pot Change Reaction where I completed the game and the
game reported that the clock was at 0. I personally think that's rather neat,
and I kind of wish it could go into the tenths or hundredths of a second in
those situations.
One play I would like to see allowed is when you have a situation such as
(Dime, blank, blank, Dime), to be allowed to play dimes in either of those
blank spots to connect the four of them and remove them from the board. If I
remember correctly, this was allowed in the old version.
Also, would it be possible to have the bonus round playable from the main menu
once you've beaten it in a regular game? In this case the round would just keep
track of your best time.

Classic: If you've played the windows game before, review the keyboard commands
in the instructions and dive right in. It's the exact same game. A few keys
have been reassigned, but that's about it.
Loose Change: This one's just like classic with one big exception. When a bomb
appears, if you do not play the proper coin on it in time, or if you play
another coin, the bomb will scatter all the coins in that stack across the top
of the other stacks, leaving that one empty. It's a lot of fun and can get
really crazy. There's one thing that I'm not sure if it's a bug or a feature.
For a large portion of the game, more than half, there is a bomb on the screen
just about constantly.
Payday: This one's quite different. You only have five stacks to work with, and
only one coin in each. The objective here is to build up large stacks of coins,
then blow them up, while trying *not* to clear the board. If you clear 40 coins
in unique positions on the grid, you get two more stacks which each fount
double. The idea is that each stack represents a work day and each position in
that stack represents an hour in that day. The two stacks you get later are the
weekend days. This is probably my favorite mode in the game.
Lastly, I did find one bug. It is possible to pause the game during the level
introduction announcements. However, when you resume, the timer is set to 0 and
the game ends immediately.
As to the discussion of a demo version, I think one would be a good idea to
allow people who aren't used to this type of game to give it a try. One wayy
Draconis could do this is to release a separate light version on the app
store, which would be restricted. The second, and I think better, way they
could release a demo is to have one app in the store that is available for
free, and would only have the demo until the full game is unlocked via an
in-app purchase.
For anyone who has access to a mac, and found the windows version even mildly
interesting, I highly recommend it. If you've never tried the windows version
or don't have access to a PC, I recommend Change Reaction if you like games
that force you to think strategically under pressure.

[Audyssey] Change Reaction Payday score

Hi all,
I just got a score of $322.20 on Easy Payday in Change reaction, including
completing the executive compensation round. Has anyone managed to get higher

[Audyssey] Super Egg Hunt Plus has been released

2012-08-22 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi all,
Super Egg Hunt plus is out. The link is:
http://www.l-works.net/seh.php
Downloading the game gives you the existing super egg hunt game, plus the
classic mode originally known as just egg hunt for free, and you can pay to
get the rest of the modes.
Having been a beta tester for the game, I can honestly say the game is a ton
of fun and well worth the money.

Re: [Audyssey] Bokurano Daiboukenn 2 question about stage 1

2012-06-18 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi,
Stage 1-4 takes time. What I'd recommend is run close to the slime, wait for it
to stop moving, jump the water wave and bash at it with your hammer. If it
starts moving, stay out of its way, jump the water again, and repeat. As for
the cruiser, it is possible to destroy it with the hammer, but it's simpler to
stand just in range with the slingshot and pummel it. Whichever weapon you use,
both enemies will take a fair bit to destroy.

Re: [Audyssey] Bokurano Daiboukenn 2 question about stage 1

2012-06-18 Thread Karl Belanger
No problem. One thing that I forgot to add which will be increasingly handy in
future levels is that the waves from the slime will damage the cruiser. So
keeping yourself between the slime and the cruiser without getting in the way
of either can actually work in your favor. Once there are multiple enemies
firing projectiles, you will often find that enemies have killed each other
without you having to do anything, which can be quite handy.

I believe the only real option I have for this is to change that main

many, many things in my todo list, and I suspect that it's a pretty
big project to do it well.

One final reason for hesitation is that the official client officially
does not support triggers - the client is fully capable of using
triggers, however I keep them disabled intentionally to prevent
botting. Given how important triggers are to most blind players, I
would think this would be a blocking factor.

Are there pretty much no accessible mac mudding clients?

 accessible.
Sure, Apple try and do the voiceover app, but when I tried an IPhone it was
pointless and useless since the interface was purely all touch screen. How

I tried it for two weeks before I got impatient with it so I went back to

I'd support Simbian myself, but looks like it's a trek down C++ lane, which

Re: [Audyssey] possible issue in swamp with levelling

2012-04-07 Thread Karl Belanger
What's happening is that the safe zone is restoring your health to 100/102.
Since your max health is now 102, you see it reporting 98% health. The same
thing will happen when you use med kits, in that they will report slightly less
than 20% restored. What is happening is that the status command reports your
health as a percentage of your max, so you don't see any difference when you
boost your health since 102/102 is still 100%.

Re: [Audyssey] Playing the Spaceship Game

2012-04-05 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi,
First, Don't start in the fighting practice area. Start with the regular game.
The fighting practice should probably have been named survival mode, or
something similar. The regular game itself actually does a good job of
explaining what is going on and the descriptions of enemies are given as
they're introduced. Secondly, turn off the music. There is a static sound near
the center of each level which seems to be just an ambiance noise. Everything
else in the enemies. Basically, use the arrow keys to move around in the area,
the page up and page down keys do not work for me, and either get a line of
sight to the enemy, which can be determined both by the stereo position and by
the look feature, and use the control plus directional to fire at the enemy, or
get as close as you can, drop a mine, and run.

Re: [Audyssey] Games for Mac

2011-11-07 Thread Karl Belanger
I already have windows 7 on another partition, which has most of the windows
games on it. I'm looking for native mac games, either mainstream or otherwise,
that are playable. One of my favorite games is Street Fighter, which I have on
the windows partition, but haven't found anything similar for Mac.

 Hi Karl,

Sure. I guess it all depends on what you want to play. Are you looking
specifically for accessible audio games or more mainstream games?

If you are looking at mainstream PC games one way to go about it is
buy a commercial emulator like Cider from Transgaming which has a huge
list of compatible mainstream games available for the Mac. However, I
can't testify as to the accessibility of those games as I have not
 played any of them personally.

At this point the best way to play both accessible and mainstream PC
games is run Windows XP via Bootcamp and install all your favorite
games on your Mac that way. That's the only way I know of to get to
play a majority of games on a Mac as native Mac games we can play are
 pretty few and far between.

In terms of native Mac games goes I can't think of many suggestions
you haven't already mentioned. If you are into text adventures there
are free interpreters like Zoom for Mac which will allow you to play
lots of your favorite text adventures on Mac. If you are into old
arcade games I believe there are Mac ports of Stella and SNES9X. I'm
sure there are accessible Mud clients out there as well, but none come
 to mind.

I guess what I'm saying is you can probably play anything you want to
if you have the right emulator or are willing to setup a multiboot
with XP. There aren't a whole lot of native accessible games for Mac
OS that I am aware of, and virtual machines or running a multiboot is
the only way around that problem I've found.

 Cheers!

Well guys, as you know I've been busy for a while, but it's about time I
gave the community a new game to play!

Dark Ruse is an RPG set in a high-tech laboratory that has been running some
unnatural experiments. You lead a 3 person team down to retrieve a voice
recorder from the center of the facility, and the ability to fully customize
your team adds a lot to play around with.

There are 8 unique job classes, including things like Fighter, Puzzle
solver, and Navigator. Out of your 3 person team, only some people can be
certain jobs, so you will have to plan very carefully if you want their
skills to compliment each other.

You have 5 choices about which supplies your team will start out with, and
each has its own major disadvantage. For example, if the lights are out and
your team loses its only flashlight, they will be at the mercy of whatever
wanders by!

You can choose among 5 personal skills, which could make the difference
between life and death. For example, if you have given your main character
extra driving skills, your team will be far more likely to survive if you
crash a vehicle.

There are 8 floors to the lab, and even reaching the final room only marks
the half-way point in your adventure. Don't forget you still have to make
it back out! Muhahahaha!

Please give the game a try, and be sure to go through the game's back-story
before setting up your characters. There is a chance that the story will
hold clues about what kinds of dangers you are more likely to face, so you
can prepare your team more effectively. Good luck to you all.

One thing you could add to help make it clear when you missed a jump is to
add a shorter scream or exhale followed by a fall noise to signal that you

Hi Dark,

As for your first point about jumping onto ledges and missing that's often
the result of simply not jumping far enough. I've done it plenty of times
myself and all I can say is to try again if that happens. You will get a feel
for jumping onto ledges after a while.

As to your second point that's an unresolved technical problem between
side-scrollers and 3d based game play. You can not shoot from a staircase,
ledge, etc because the look up/down commands page up and down only changes
the y axis of view and unfortunally in MOTA the z axis is up/down. So I'm
going have to write a custom look up/down function for this game
specifically to resolve this problem or rewrite the targeting code to do
this automatically in a 2d environment.
Either way it is one of those things I intend to fix sometime between now
and rc1.

Cheers!

After jumping the big gap and climbing downwards, there's a flight of

No, L-works is not closed. Liam posted on Twitter that the hosting company
had a power failure.
I wish people would stop assuming a company has closed when its site goes
down after checking once. If a developer is closing his site, chances are he
would put out a notice either here or on audiogames.net. Also, sites go down
occasionally for various things. Amazon's virtual servers went down for a
bit Monday night, taking services such as 4Square and even the System Access
network off line for a while. If a site has been down for a week or more,
than I might start to wonder, but unless a notice has been posted somewhere,
or the site has been down for an extended period of time, chances are the
site is not closing.

Hi Karl,

As for running and pausing when you press enter I have no clue as to what
causes it. People have been complaining about that for a while now, I've
looked, and can't find any reason for the problem. I can't fix what I don't
know is wrong. Best thing to do right now is to ignore or overlook it
because fixing things like that is really, really, really low on my list of
priorities right now. Its not something I personally consider critical.

/As for jumping the Genesis Engine uses an analog jump system similar to
many mainstream PC and console games. I'm not going to totally rewrite the
jump system to allow you to press control and press right arrow x number of
times because its not a standard method of jumping and I personally don't
like it. This methodology of pressing jump and hitting an arrow several
times is something the audio games community came up with and it is not
standard. I'm trying to introduce some true mainstream standards into my
projects so I'm sorry, but I'm not going to change it for something I
consider to be contrary to those standards and quality I'm trying to
introduce here.

Cheers!

I'm glad you like the new weapon sounds. I recently purchased them and felt
they sounded better than the ones I was using. So put them in beta 21.

As for the dead end message Angela says when walking into a wall no
problem. I've got to release a patch anyway to fix the laser sight so this
is a relatively simple modification I can make in that patch. So that should
be in the next version.

As for strength that stat is fixed. I can however lower the amount of points
the sword removes from Angela's strength every time she swings it. I'll take
a look at perhaps lowering the amount of strength it requires to swing the
sword.

Re: [Audyssey] i finaly beat the awesome homer!

2011-07-22 Thread Karl Belanger
I also finally beat Awesome Homer. I think this game is definitely a lot of
fun and worth playing again.
I would like to see each level playable by itself once you've beaten it in
the regular game. There are times when I'd like to experiment with a certain
level but it is to much hassle to try to get to that point in the game,
especially if I have a saved game beyond that point.

Hi Phil,

Darn it! and I thought that I usually checked the spelling of the text in my
games. Really did miss that one though. Hopefully I will remember to fix
that in version 2. I hope that it did not hurt Marge too much to be re
scuned. grin

[Audyssey] Awesome Homer level 1 bug

2011-07-22 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi,

I've found a bug with Awesome Homer in level 1. Sometimes, the barrels are
so close together that jumping one lands you directly on another and you
lose. There is no real way to avoid this situation, as if you jump any
earlier you'll land on the first barrel. Could you please increase the
minimum spacing between barrels?

Re: [Audyssey] Awesome Homer

2011-07-20 Thread Karl Belanger
In level 1 you need to run to the left, jumping the barrels and ducking
under the birds. Picking up a chainsaw gives you invincibility for a short
time, but you should be careful as it can expire without warning.

[Audyssey] awesome Homer thoughts and suggestions

2011-07-20 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi all,

I've been playing Awesome Homer and have some thoughts and suggestions.

First, Please add a way to skip the level intros when restarting a level. I
would also like to see the results of the current level read out when you
die, rather than the whole log file. Third, a learn game sounds would
certainly help on some levels, though it is not exactly necessary.

I have some thoughts about specific levels, so if you haven't made it at
least to level 7 I suggest you stop reading.

S

P

O

I

L

E

R

In level 1, I don't really have many suggestions. The level plays well and
the sounds are basically self-explanatory.

For level 2, it wasn't immediately clear until I died a couple times that
you need to line up the sound of both planes in the stereo field, rather
than centering the new one.

Level 3 took some getting used to how fast you turn, but once I got it it
was fine.

On level 4, your speed starts off extremely slow and increases slowly. You
might consider a faster starting speed and less finite speed increases.

No complaints about level 5.

For level 6, there needs to be some better explanation. Sometimes, when I'd
turn towards wind, I'd die without being able to do anything. Others, I'd
enter a new area where the music changed. It boiled down to trial and error
for me until I eventually got it.

As for level 7, I still haven't beaten it. When I accelerate, I hear two
cars, and try to get next to one of them, and I'd either get a crash with a
monkey screech when I ran into a car, or a monkey call when I passed one of
them. After that, I was never able to find the two cars again. Could someone
who has beaten the game please give me some hints on level 7?

Two more questions, how does the scoring work on level 4 as my score is
always low, and how do you avoid the bananas reliably that are thrown by the
last two cars in level 6?

Hi Karl,

Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions. I will work on
adding better instructions etc.

Spoiler space.

Yes Karl you are jumping from airplane to airplane so you need to wait until
they are in line with each other.

Level 6 is just a very simple maze with some pit falls without warning. So
yes, it is just trial and error.

In level 7, you want to just keep driving. The first two cars just randomly
get in your way. There are 3 more cars that you need to pass before you get
to the car with Gonk and Marge.

And thank you again very much for your thoughts and suggestions.

putting a decent amount of music or audiobooks on the device, you will

I have a serious issue with beta twenty in that when I start the game using
the desktop shortcut, the program stops responding almost immediately. When
I tried launching it via tomb.exe in the program files folder, the game ran
fine, but s would not activate the site, and one or two other odd behaviors.

Hi Angela,

Thanks for the info. have you ever experienced this issue with prior betas?

I'm going to do some testing here, to see if I can track down the
issue, but so far no luck reproducing the problem. By chance can you
check your Programs and Features and see if the Visual C++ 2008
runtime was installed correctly?

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output

2011-06-25 Thread Karl Belanger
Personally, I think the voice is fine as is. I think you'll run across the
problem that if you slow the voice down to much, people will start to say
that the voice is dragging. If enough people say the voice is to fast and
you decide to slow it down, I think the simplest way to determine the best
speed would be to record a few samples at different rates, and see which
people like most, or another possibility would be to estimate the rate a
person would say the same rate and set it for that.
Personally, I say leave it as is.

 Hi Dark,

As was mentioned in my moderator message earlier this morning one way
to find out if things are working properly on your end is to check the
list archives, and see if there have been any postings over the time
period in question. When looking at the archives it looks like there
were posts clear up to the 19th, the list recieved no posts on the
20th, and there were a few posts this morning. Most of them being the
 test message variety.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Audio Support

2011-06-12 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi,
Here's a thought, release a version for windows soon which uses directX and
etc. Once that is out and generating sales, take as much time as you need to
iron out the audio bugs in the cross-platform version. Most of the gaming
community will be off your back and happily playing, and you can work on
getting the audio right. Once you have a solution, you can either update the
windows version of Mota to use the new engine, or you can just leave it as
is. Another benefit is that you will have actual sales income to defray the
cost of FMOD, Allegro, or whatever audio library you decide to use.

Hi Charles,

Yeah, I certainly understand that. I know that the audio, joystick support,
etc was much better in the Windows version of the G3D Engine, and I even
agree beta 19 seems like a step backward instead of forward. The problem is
that I want and need a completely cross-platform solution that basically
does what DirectX does that will allow me to build high quality games for
my OS, Linux, and still be able to produce Windows versions for my customers
as well.

That said, if Allegro doesn't pan out I'm just going to have to compile a
Windows specific version of MOTA for Windows, and forget it.
I'll be unhappy about having to maintain a version for an OS I no longer
use, but my customers will be happy at any rate.

Cheers!

that cannot be used, the I suggest taking the time off of game

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA beta 19 released!

2011-05-24 Thread Karl Belanger
I noticed that the bug from a much earlier cross-platform beta is back,
namely that sounds are again not panning properly. They stay all the way
over to one side, or exactly in the center, and do not pan at all like in
beta 18. I realize that you may not be able to get as exact as with DirectX,
but I strongly feel that there must be some level of panning. It is very
hard to tell if a monster is in range or not if there is no panning to give
you positional information.

Subject: [Audyssey] Instructions was Re: pcs games question?

Hi,
Here are the steps required to run the games. This should work with every
screen reader around, though some work better than others. NVDA works the
best if you ask me.
1. Go to programsaccessoriescommand prompt. this should open a dos style
window. I recommend maximizing it by going to the system menu with alt space
and selecting maximize.
2. Navigate to the game you'd like to play. to change drives, enter the
drive's letter in uppercase followed by a colon, followed by enter. For
directories, enter cd followed by the directory the game is in.
As an example, my copy of mobius mountain's demo is on the d drive in a
folder called dg. Since the command prompt starts you off on C, I first have
to enter D: (to get to the D drive, then cd dg\mobius97 to get to the actual
game.
3. To then start the game you enter its name, though it may frequently be
shortened. Since The full name mobius mountain exceeded dos's 8-character
limit and would over-all be long to type in, it had been shortened to
mobius.
And after that, the game begins. When asked for sound driver, You can use
the default driver, or if available go down to windows sound and use that
instead. Also for NVDA, there is a bug in the command prompt where it tries
to move you in the screen although there's a menu, to get around that, just
hit nvda+f2 before each arrow key to bypass.
Also, you can run the games from explorer, though that way you may
frequently miss any good bye messages and so on. This is because Printing
the message is done very quickly and after that the game closes, and seeing
explorer's command prompt window is temporary it will close and you'll not
see said message.
Finally, if you experience slowdown, changing the priority of the EXE
(cmd.exe if you're using the command prompt or the game's name.exe if ran
from explorer) using the task manager may help. To do that, hit
ctrl+shift+esc to open the task manager, find the processes tab, locate
ctrl+shift+the
exe in the list, hit your applications key and you will see the priority
there.
HTH!

Thanks for the bug report, I have added it to my list of things to fix. The
game's built-in sapi is having some issues, so if you happen to have NVDA
I've been recommending people use that. NVDA is the only screen reader I
have so I'm honestly not too surprised some different people are having
issues with it using their screen readers. With a little time I hope to
iron out these issues.

While using SAPI mode, I was
listening to a quest, and I hit the m for mouse key in the midst.  I
 received the following run-time
 dialogue:

 Project1

 Run-time error '-2147201018 (80045006)':

Method '~' of object '~' failed

 OK

Sorry, this doesn't look all that illuminating.  I was in the SAPI
mode, because Jaws Support mode doesn't appear to be working correctly
on my machine.  Menu items don't speak as I arrow to them, and
information boxes, such as the life in the dome items only read
their first lines.  I was trying SAPI to get around this.  Also, the
SAPI doesn't interrupt speech with a key press, which would be ideal.

Fascinating game concept and something we haven't seen yet, I'm really
looking forward to refinements and large-scale play.

What problems have you had with landing in TDV with v1.5? I just tried

 Hi Imbar,

I know this isn't something you want to hear, but TDV wasn't really
designed for keyboards. I've noticed it is easier to take off and
land using a flightstick, game pad, or something with greater control
over the plane. Keyboards aren't meant for a game like this.

Hi,

I completely agree with this opinion. I realise many VI gamers don't want to
come up with the money for a game controller like a gamepad, joystick, etc
but the fact of the matter is the keyboard is too clunky and unwieldy for
certain types of games. Blind Adrenalines Rail Racer and BPC's 3d Velocity
are two games that really really need a gamepad or joystick to get good at.
Otherwise you are trying to use an infurior input device on a game that
needs the agility and control that joystick, gamepads, flightsticks, etc
can provide.

On 4/30/11, Ron Kolesar kolesar16...@roadrunner.com wrote:

For landing, the death match mode and the story mode. AKA the mission

I think you'll enjoy it much much better.
 Hope this helps.

[Audyssey] MOTA 18 bugs

2011-04-05 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi,

I'm really liking the new beta of Mota. I have found a few bugs, though.

First, the sight on/off messages still use the old voice. Also, the chasm in
level 2 doesn't appear to have a voice clip, nor do the platforms.

There also seem to be some bugs with the laser sight as sometimes it locks
on but when I fire I waste my ammunition, and other times it doesn't lock on
but firing still hits the enemy. Is there a trick to hitting enemies?

And finally, I managed to get my strength to go negative somehow, and it
would not recharge and I couldn't use any strength-based weapons.

Lastly, is there any current use for the look up/down feature?

Karl

Hi I'm playing Hunter from BSC games using windows XP. I'm finding during
level 1 when the doctor comes after me and I hit the spacebar to climb a
tree, nothing happens and I die. I hit it once because I'm playing on easy,
but I still get killed. Also the same thing happens when I hit enter to
kill the snakes. Not sure where I'm going wrong, I have listened to the
audio tutorial and read the documentation so I know I'm getting it right.
I'd be glad of any help, thanks from Lori.

Hi Dark,

Although, I'm pretty good at FPS games I found Monkey Business rather
disorienting the first few times I played it as well. Eventually, I got the
hang of it, but as you said relying totally on audio won't help much. The
only way I really got the hang of Monkey Business is by creating a mental
map of the levels and could get around pretty much by memory. That made
catching monkies easier because I remembered I'd have to walk around a
stone, tree, etc and could use those stationary items as landmarks. They
also could be used to hide, and you could jump out from behind a tree or
stone to catch the monkeies as they pass buy. The absolutely worst level is
the ledges level. I've never beaten it just by exploring it. Instead I've
had to memorize it step by step to successfully get passed it.

On 3/25/11, dark d...@xgam.org wrote:
 Hi Phil.

Actually, following the professor was never the bit I had trouble with
and did it first time I played the game.

I just waited for the professor to get a bit ahead then kept his
footsteps or humming in the center of my sterrio field, occasionally
adjusting with either right and left arrows or ctrl arrows, much
as in fact I do when doing the follow the truck mission in tank commander.

sinse there isn't much other sound going on at the time it's fairly
easy to isolate the prof from everything else.

it's the jungle that really gives me trouble.

firstly, the tracking of sound sources seems amazingly imprecise.
Frequently I'll here an object bleep in my locator of say the sword or
a coin, center it, walk towards it and go right past.

Then, the placement of sounds relative to obstacles seems very dodgy.
Frequently I'll here something but not be able to get to it and go
slamming into a tree, this is true of both stationary objects, and
moving ones and makes catching monkies a right royal pest. For someone
who navigates by markers and directional memory rather than by
actually creating a mental map of the terrain, this is frankly a
nightmare, because it means I cannot accurately work out where sound
markers of certain things are and plan routes around that without slamming
head on into something.

Just to make things even harder, there is no handy backup as in the
gma engine of things like scan or object identity menues, so I can't
get a 360 or 180 scan around me, the sonar I find nearly useless.

Finally, it seems the engine has no distinction betwene forground
sound sources eg, object sounds or purely sound objects which move in
the 3D field, and background ones, ie, constant ambience. Everything
seems to have the same volume, which makes distinguishing one from the
other a right pest.

this is why, even with the manual description, I find the jungle and
the game generally so hard to play, pluss of course there are a
few mechanical issues with the game, such as the way you can't swing
your net, or even actually navigate very well, while swimming, it
always seems when I'm just about to gnab one of those bloody monkies
it dives into the river, and not only can I not use my net but I end
up getting disorientated and swept of somewhere else, often to my
doom!

Actually Phil, even though Sarah is probably a more complex game
overall, especially in terms of many sound objects, I find it far
easier to play owing to the good sound positioning and distinction,
handy review commands and precise location of sounds in the Gma engine.

 Beware the grue!

 Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] my frustration with the blind gaming comunity.

2011-02-07 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi,
I suspect most people do not have interest in mainstream games for two
reasons. First, they require consoles which can run from $200 up to $400
just for the console, never mind the $50 or more price tag for many of the
games. Combine that with the relatively small percentage of games that are
playable on these systems, and the inaccessibility of much of the content,
and that only compounds the issue. Also, many people do not have the time,
patience, or sighted help to learn the menu systems for many of the games.
Even for me, I usually get someone sighted to help me learn the menu layout
and do initial option configuration to my liking. For people who live alone
or otherwise can not get anyone to help, this may be a showstopper for them.

Subject: [Audyssey] my frustration with the blind gaming comunity.

Hey guys,
Ok I'm gonna go ahead and say it. I find myself getting extremely
frustrated with the blind gaming community. Why you ask? ok here goes. I'm
sure you guys have noticed I've been putting up some rock band samples up.
you've also noticed Clement has been putting up some street fighter IV
samples and various other samples. So why is it that when we ask for
feedback or comments on these samples we work hard to create, people simply
either ignore us completely, or the same 3 or 4 people are the ones to
always respond? well you know what I think the reason for that is? simply
that the games we post about are mainstream games, not audio games. I've
noticed that when a new audio game comes out, even if it's the most
simplistic game in existence, everyone's all jumping to download it
immediately and there are threads that span hundreds of messages on the
subject. But when we post something having to do with console games, the
thread dies in a matter of hours. I'm sure Clement has been feeling this
frustration as well. it's been leaking through in his emails to the list
even if he hasn't mentioned it outright. So my question is this: what must
we do to get you guys interested in something other than topspeed 3, or any
other audio game for that matter? don't you guys have that spark of
curiosity to find out everything there is to find about video games? why is
everyone ignoring these games outright? This community has hundreds of
members, and only a very limited amount of people even talk about mainstream

games. it's all audio games, audio games, and more audio games. there's so
much more out there for you to find guys. how can you call yourself a gamer
when you aren't even willing to download the files Clement and I put up to
at least listen to what these games have to offer? Whenever I put up a rock
band sample, I get like 4 or 5 downloads at most. however I rarely get any
feedback. I think you guys are just shoving these files in your hard drives
and don't even take a listen. if you do, then you have the curiosity of a
robot. I don't know about Clement, but I'm not planning on putting anything
else up. What's the point? no one seems to care what we have to say, or have

any curiosity about console gaming. you guys just keep playing your audio
games and keep your closed-minded mentality about game accessibility in
general. If you think I'm taking things too far, consider this: remember
when Clement and I had that little Street Fighter seminar? I finally thought

that people finally had some interest in what we had to say and in the game
and such. we got some really good questions, and over all had a really good
time. but once that seminar ended, what do you think happened? That's right.

absolutely nothing. people basically were like oh ok, that game had awesome
sounds and music and such. ok back to playing some tank commander. at least,

that's how I feel personally. it was fun as a spur of the moment thing. Now
let me ask you this. how many of you, after listening to that seminar went
over to gamestop and bought a copy of Street Fighter? or even go to a
friend's house and try the game out? My guess is 0. ok rant over. I know
this email is a mess lol, but it's just basically me writing down my ideas
as they come to mind. take from it what you will. for those of us serious
about gaming, we need to get together and figure where we should take it
from here. Do we give up, or keep trying? I'm pretty tired of trying my
self when everyone's resisting to be honest. Good day everyone.

Re: [Audyssey] Serious pause bug in MOTA

2011-02-05 Thread Karl Belanger
Seriously, as I said in a previous message, if it's more time consuming than
it's worth, that's fine. It's just an inconvenience I can learn to live with
quite easily. I didn't realize my suggestion would cause so much debate and
headache. Everyone can completely forget I ever brought it up if they want.

Hi Karl,

That's not very practical. I suppose in theory it could be done, but
at what cost. You need to understand what you want is pretty time
consuming, and what I want more than anything else in this world is to
have the game completely done and out of my hair by June. So
obviously I'm not really willing to spend any more time than
absolutely necessary to rewrite anything.

cheers!

The only reason I'm making an issue of this is simply that it is currently
necessary to stand up before pausing, which can be very detrimental to the
player. I could really care less what happens when you press a key after
the
game is paused. Would it be possible to simply tell the game to disregard
any key currently held down when pause is hit? If you let it up and then
press it again, the game would then unpause.
