Hi Shane,

One problem with your ring announcer idea though. You do realise if we
go forth with this idea we have to scrap the idea of a custom wrestler
mode. This is something I know Dark would really miss, and I know
others would miss it as well. That's one reason I wasn't initially
going to do an official ring announcer. That would be alright if we
were doing a game like Raw vs Smackdown were you know only those
wrestlers will be in the game, but if you ever plan to update or add
wrestlers you have to add custom ring announcements etc too.

Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

2011-04-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

No, you don't. As I said any defensive actions will be automatic. Here
is an example.

Let's assume you are playing a match of Eve Torres vs Brie Bella. If
Brie Bellla tries a missile dropkick there will be an internal
calculation/roll of stats to determine if she successfully performed
the move or not. If not it might say something like, Eve deftly steps
aside and Brie Bella, finding nobody home, hits the mat hard. Now, it
looks like Eve is back in control of this match.

Behind the scenes, so to speak, all that is happening is a stat check
to see if a move succeeds or fails. If it succeeds Brie Bella pulls
off a stunning dropkick to Eve Torres. If it fails it will print some
message of a ddefensive play on your part like deftly stepping out of
the way, breaking loose of a hold, kicking out of apin, whatever.

P.S.

I'm glad Eve kicked Nikki Bella's butt last Monday night on raw. Let's
see if she gets her title back from Brie Bella at Extreme Rules.

Cheers!

Hi Dark,

I was pretty much thinking of determining that based on number of wins
and losses. If you are wrestling for the raw brand and want a title
shot at the WWE championship you are going to have to wrestle
everybody else on Raw until you are the top contender for the Miz's
title. Same goes for Smackdown. If wrestling for Smackdown you'll have
to wrestle everyone else on Smackdown so that you can be the top
contender for the world championship. Diva's of course work a bit
different since the title holder can either be from the Raw or
Smackdown brand. So it doesn't really matter which brand you wrestle
for in that case because the Diva's championship passes to and from
Raw and Smackdown all the time. Legends like diva's aren't asigned to
any brand or promotion and choose any title shot they want. Does that
make sense?

Of course, there is a problem with this. If you want to play the Miz,
and he is the default WWE champion, then your position would be as
defender of the title rather than someone trying to wrestle for a
title shot. So that would offset the wins/losses rules somewhat. I'm
not sure how to handle that issue. Perhaps vacate all titles and
wrestle for them via tournaments?

I guess I'll find out soon as last week on Smackdown Edge announced he
had to retire do to medical reasons. Since he was the current world
heavy-weight champion that title is now open and vacated for anyone to
take. I imagine they'll have some sort of tournament match in the next
ppv for the top contenders to battle it out for that title.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

2011-04-19 Thread Thomas Ward

Cheers!

[Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

2011-04-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi everyone,

Some of you may be happy to know I've reached some decisions regarding
the wrestling game I plan to make. I've reviewed all of the messages
on the subject and have carefully considered all of the suggestions,
ideas, and comments put forth on the subject. As this is to be an open
source project and something we will all enjoy I've decided to go
ahead and implament many of your suggestions and ideas as follows.

First, there was quite a bit of debate on what wrestlers should be
added, weather they belong in this game, etc. I've decided that I'm
going to go ahead and take the all stars type approach which would
have a full roster of old favorites like Hulk Hogan, Junkyard Dog, and
Andre the Giant as well as new top stars like the Miz, Rae Mystereo,
Edge, and John Sena, etc. Given the fact that this is an open source
project, a community project in a sense, it is only fair to include as
many stars as possible and let the user, you, decide how to play the
game.

For example, since I'm a big fan of the older stars like Hulk Hogan I
might create a card of only old wrestlers like Hulk Hogan vs King Kong
Bundy, Junkyard Dog vs Randy Savage, Tito Santana vs Greg the Hammer
Valentine, and so on. Someone who is more familiar with the 90's stars
might want to create a card with Stone Cold Steve Auston, the Rock,
Owen Hart, Sean Michaels, etc. Then, the complete fantasy gamer might
want to create fantasy matches like Andre the Giant vs Big Show or
formar women's champion, Rockin' Robin, vs current women's champion,
Eve Torrez. In other words customize and play the game however you
like.

You might ask why I changed my mind. Well, as I said I saved most of
the messages on this topic before we lost the thread to other
subjects, and Phil's arguments were very convincing. Phil pointed out
that when playing a game like Baseball most people weren't too
concerned about sticking strictly to baseball cannon, and chose to
play the game from a fantasy baseball point of view rather than a
strictly purest point of view. It was his belief that the same sort of
thing would happen to my wrestling game. People would not like it as
well if I chose to use only certain wrestlers I personally liked, but
left out newer wrestlers that maybe someone else liked better. He has
a good point.

Fact of the matter is I now think I was letting my feelings about a
purest game effect my decision making process in this regard. Yes, it
is possible to do both, and with a little bit more effort on my part I
can let the end user pick and choose what wrestlers they wish to use.
It doesn't have to be as one-sided as I think I lead everyone to
believe. I simply have to let you choose the wrestlers you want to
play from the main roster like Piledriver and Wrestling League Manager
does and you can play the game the way you like, and I canplay the
game the way I like. That's fair for everyone.

Second, there was a little bit of discussion on main events. Since I
am no longer sticking to any specific era, time, or place it has freed
me up to think about these other issues more clearly. In short, I
think I will eventually add all the Pay Per View main events such as
Summer Slam, Wrestlemania, Backlash, Night of Champions, Surviver
Series, Royal Rumble, etc which will be a huge improvement over
Piledriver as you can only enter those events if and when you become a
top tear wrestler. If your wrestlers standings are low you will have
to bring up your standings before he or she enters a main event
calaber match. This will make the game more like Jim's NFL were you
have to win several matches before even entering the main event
matches or get your first title shot. In otherwords a career/season
mode for wrestlers.

Third, there was quite a bit of discussion about user interface
elements. Well, I've decided for the time being to start with a
text-based game. One reason for that is I've been writing some text
games like USA Blackjack which appears to be fairly accessible with
current versions of Jaws, Window-Eyes, and NVDA. My wrestling game
should be as equally accessible provided you have a decent up to date
screen reader. If your screen reader has issues with the command
prompt Window that's unfortunate but I've got to think of what works
for most people here. Plus I've tested USA Blackjack with Speakup for
Linux, and the game is fairly accessible on Linux as well. So it is my
feeling that text is the most accessible option for all involved.

Another big up for using text is braille support. I know this often
doesn't get mentioned much, but deaf-blind gamers really don't get a
lot of games that targets their special needs. Over the last few years
the Audyssey list mainly talks about audio only games, I.E. games full
of sound and speech, but completely leaves out a community of
potential gamers who can't hear or have difficulty hearing the games.
By making it text and with a screen reader like Jaws, Window-Eyes,
orca, BrailleTTY, etc we can create a

Hi Shane,

Ummm...I'd rather you not answer these kinds of questions for me.
Especially, in light of the fact your answer was wrong. Please, don't
give people misleading information like this.

On the contrary the game will have both sounds and music. I am right
now compiling a huge library of official WWE entrance music for all or
most of the super stars I'll be using for 1.0 of the game. I'll
probably have a couple hundred MB of just entrance music compressed as
44100 KHZ 16-bit ogg files when I'm done.

In addition to the music I'm looking around for high quality wrestling
sound effects. Right now I'm confining my search to basic things like
croud ambience, bells, bodies hitting the matt, and things like that
but how many actual sounds depends on what I turn up. So it will have
sounds and music, but the user interface will be text.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

2011-04-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Michael,

Yes, there most definitely is going to be sounds and music in the
game. What I'm basically thinking of doing is writing something like
the Smackdown vs Raw games produced by THQ, but instead of graphics
and things like that the game will use text instead. Right now I'm
looking at about 200 MB of music tracks in just entrance music alone.
I've got quite a collection of tracks ranging from 80's entrance
themes, 90's entrance themes, clear up to current themes for Edge,
Cena, the Miz, CM Punk, etc. So that part is covered.

As far as general sound effects I'm working on that. I have some
generic sounds like croud ambience, ringing bells, punches, kicks, etc
but not really enough to do the game justice yet. However, I'll be
adding new sounds as I find them, and if they are of a decent quality.

As for networking support I'm not planning on adding that to the game.
At least not right now. That's for a few reasons.

The first and main reason is I've never been much of a fan of
networked games. Even though I own some games that have network
ability like SoundRTS, Topspeed 2, Rail Racer, etc I've never found
network play all that apealing. Games with portable off line game play
are more my style. So, for me at least, there would be no personal
value in adding that feature right away.

Second, I travel a lot with my laptop. I like the idea of being able
to bring up a game and play it anywhere at any time. This means if
there is no internet connection a network game mode wouldn't benifit
me at all. I'd have to have a constant wireless access point somewhere
to make it worth my time in that case.

Finally, there is a technical reason I'm opting out of network game
play. While there are cross-platform network APIs like SDL Net it
isn't something that can be used without fully initializing SDL in the
process. If I'm going to do that I might as well go all the way and
use SDL for sound, music, input, networking, draw a game window, etc.
Besides being a lot of extra work we run into something of an
accessibility issue here.

As a result of SDL's cross-platform nature if you draw a window using
SDL's cross-platform renderer it is going to create a window that
screen readers like Jaws, Window-Eyes, NVDA, Orca, you name it won't
be able to see. So even if you print text to that window the screen
reader will see it as blank. It doesn't know what is there because the
window isn't tied to any native API like the Windows API, GTK+, Cocoa,
etc. That's fine if you are going to self-voice the game, but we
aren't. So that's why no network play from a technical standpoint.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

2011-04-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Well, basically what I'm going to do is give someone the option to
either create a new wrestler, I.E. one that doesn't exist in the
database, or select a preexisting wrestler. I've decided to do this
for two reasons.

First, there are hundreds of wrestlers who have wrestled for the WWE
and other promotions. It would be litterally impossible for me to add
each and everyone of them to the game myself. So the best solution is
to take maybe the top 50 or top 100 stars, and if your wrestler isn't
listed add him or her yourself by going through the custom wrestler
wizard.

Second, I realise that not everyone is a huge wrestling buff. Some
people will, shall we say, just see this as another game to play.
Maybe they don't know who wrestler x is, and just want to make up
their own male or female star. Again, best solution here is to go to
the custome wrestler wizard.

Finally, I realise there will always be someone out there somewhere
who is just dying to add himself to the game as an actual WWE super
star. So be it. They'll just have to add themselves to the custom
database.

As far as music goes the game will definitely feature entrance theme
music for many if not all of the super stars. However, what I'll
likely do for custom wrestlers is create a CustomMale.ogg and a
Custom_Female.ogg file to stand in for entrance music. If you want
something else to be your theme music just overwrite said files with
an ogg file of your choice, and custom character creation is complete.

In fact, all of the music in the game can be replaced the same way.
For example, if someone wanted to play Trish Stratus but didn't like
her default music, Time to Rock and Roll, you could just drop in a
music file called Trish_Stratus.og and presto. The theme music is
changed. However, since Time to Rock and Roll is her actual entrance
theme that's naturally the default for that particular super star.

As for story modes etc that's on a very distant to do list. I've got a
lot more pressing things like building the game, balancing the game
mechanics, etc to worry about things like storylines and who is going
to kick someones butt for whatever at the moment.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

2011-04-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Actually, cross-platform audio really isn't a big problem. Not as big
as it use to be a few years ago. Thank the developers over at
Firelight Technologies for making such a great audio API called FMOD
Ex. Right now FMOD Ex is the leading audio API for game developers,
and best of all it runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux. There are
comercial builds for Play Station, XBox, and other platforms as well
but I don't want to know what it would cost to license those special
versions for game consoles. Lol!

Anyway, these days cross-platform audio isn't a problem. Slightly
expensive, but with the right API like FMOD Ex you can get the same
quality of audio output and features as XAudio2, DirectSound,
OpenAL,or any of the other audio APIs out there. FMOD offers 2d stereo
panning, virtual 3d positioning, and so on. It offers lots of
cross-platform DSP effects such as echo, low pass filters, pitch
changes, etc. If that wasn't enough to ice the cake it supports a
number of file types such as wav, mp3, aif, flak, wma, and ogg out of
the box. All be it some proprietary formats like wma are only
available on Windows builds not Linux. Of course, since ogg is
supported on Mac, Linux, and Windows that's the ideal compression to
use for large sound files like music and background ambience.

Basically, we've decided to begin using and licensing FMOD Ex for our
future titles for this reason. Streemway is nice, but its not
cross-platform. FMOD litterally has everything we need and supplies
top quality audio for every platform we can see developing games for
in the future. Plus saves us time writing a library that wraps OpenAL
with similar features to load and decompress mp3s, ogg, wma, etc. FMOD
has got it all already. No need to duplicate the work ourselves. So
the next generation G3D engine as well as our free open source
projects will be based on FMOD Ex for audio.

Smile.

Subject: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

I know this often
doesn't get mentioned much, but deaf-blind gamers really don't get

Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

2011-04-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shane,

Actually, the game will be more or less menu driven. You might be
given a list of general catagories of moves such as arial, brawling,
submission, technical, etc and then you would select the actual move
you want to attempt. For instance you might select brawling and then
select uppercut to deliver a nice uppercut to your aponents jaw. This
was the only practical way I could include all the possibilities in
terms of moves.

For example, submission holds. There are a lot of them and variants.
Something like the figure four leglock has three or four varients I
know of. One of Bret Harts favorites, the Sharpshooter, is basically a
reverse figure four leglock with a fansy name attached to it. There
are a couple of others as well, but can't think of there names off
hand.

Plus I've played games like Piledriver, and it misses a lot of moves.
I can think of several classic moves like the powerbomb or Fabulous
Moolah's favorite flying snapmare that don't even get a mention. I'd
like to fill in the gap and add a lot more wrestling moves like that
to give your wrestler several options and plays. Although, the flying
snapmare, popularized by Moolah, is more a dirty female wrestling
move as it involves grabbing the other woman by the hair and then
flipping her over your sholder. Ouch!

Hi tom.

Well as someone who's only had a slight acquaintance with wrestling I like
the sound of this certainly, sinse I personally liked the idea of creating
my own wrestlers.

Just as a suggestion though, would it be possible to have the wizard allow
the possibility of tying a new entrance music track in og format to each
created wrestler, thus letting the player create more of his/her own stars
if desired, say by either using a numbering system for the files, or
having the entrance music file named after the created wrestler instead of
replacing the standard male and female entrance, rather the way topspeed car
creation lets you add your own files for individual cars, no matter how many
custome cars you wish to create.

That way you can setup as many custom wrestlers as you want, maybe even
trade them with other people, and if you wished to enact some sort of career
battle, say by making your character a challenger and having his brother as
the evil champion, this would be entirely possible.

Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

2011-04-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Michael,

Well, given the fact that this will be an all stars type game I don't
think the destinction between the Raw, Smackdown, and Tough Enough
brands will matter that much here. Although, if you look up a
wrestlers bio in the game it will tell you if that wrestler currently
belongs to the Raw, Smackdown, or Legend brand. Legends of course
proceeded the split between Smackdown, Raw, and Tough Enough brands so
get their own brand or catagory here.

As for a dedicated ring announcer there currently isn't one. Not
unless someone is willing to come foward and offer there services for
that deuty. I'm certainly not going to try and get all the actual WWE
ring announcements by recording them as it would take me ages to
record, edit, not to mention even find all the ones I'd need. So it
would be better if someone with a good announcer type voice could do
that job.

As for Divas they definitely will be in the game. When you select your
season mode, select a super star, you can choose if you want to play
as a male or female star. Rookies are the male stars and the divas are
the female stars. My roster is currently being rewritten from scratch
right now so I can't say for certain who will make the final cut for
1.0, but you can be pretty sure the most famous stars from the male
and female devisions will most likely be on it. Guys like Steve
Auston, Hulk Hogan, Edge, Randy Savage, Jake the Snake Roberts, the
Miz, etc are definitely going to make the cut. As for the divas I
haven't figured out a final list but most of the current divas like
Eve Torres and Michelle MicCool as well as past champions like Trish
Stratus, Rockin' Robin, and Wendi Richter will definitely be there.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

2011-04-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Well, keep in mind here when I say you can add wrestlers at the moment
my plans only allow you to add one custom wrestler. Its not like
Piledriver where you can add 50 or 100 new wrestlers to the game. So
in that light is it really that necessary to rename one file
Custom_Wrestler.ogg to something else like The_Rock.ogg?

And before anyone asks or flames me for only allowing one new wrestler
to the game at the moment its because of technical reasons. I was
thinking about writing this game from a single wrestlers point of
view. Basically, you select a wrestler, and you will be him or her
until you decide to start over. This will make it easier to write,
maintain, and debug.

My key concern with having an unlimited number of custom wrestlers is
it will be harder to debug, it will ad lots of extra work to create,
and of course they'll all have to use some bog standard A.I. since
they are an unknown talent as far as I'm concerned. I won't know what
moves, specials, etc you have in mind which leads to another issue.
That is if we want a completely custom wrestler than that means we
have to add the ability to have custom moves/specials not necessarily
included in the game. Plus as I've mentioned before I'm not happy with
just a handful of different generic bots. I want character specific
wrestling A.I. or it isn't worth writing or playing. That's the purest
in me talking again.

Cheers!

SDL Mixer not being as good as Windows or Mac. That's certainly true,
and SDL Mixer is only a free cross-platform mixer though. That's the

FMOD, etc.

Ouch!

I like all these ideas!
And trust me that something unuaasual for me.
I have one question though, How would you enter your moves?
Do you type them or cellect them.

Cheers!

And if there is going to be any ring announcer that calls out your

going to be tag team title and women title division.

Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions

2011-04-18 Thread dark

Hi tom.

well if technically a single wrestler is easier that makes sense, and I
admit I'd like the idea of the career mode being from the perspective of a
wrstler I create.

However, there might be a compromise. For instance, instead of letting the
user create custom moves for their wrestler, let them choose only from the
number of moves already in game (if your creating so many wrestlers, this
should give lots of choice).

ditto for Ai if the ai is based on basic probabilities and stats, --- either
that or as I said one must fall did, create a number of ai styles someone
could choose for a custom wrestler, for instance if I remember my wwf
correctly, sergeant slaughter most often fought very aggressively and with
use of submission holds like the cammel clutch, where as someone like texus
tornado relied more on fast movement and agility, with lots of ground based
attack maneuvers like the irish whip and his own tornado move.

If a player wanted a custom wrestler who fought like sergeant slaughter,
they could select ai type aggressive submission, where as if they wanted a
fast wrestler like texus tornado they could select the ground based agile
style.

if this goes beyond technical considderations or what you'd like in the
game, fair enough, though i'm stil glad you'll be letting us create at least
our own main character as the case goes either way.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

When will this game be out for download?
Looking forward to it.
