Also as ugajin suggests, try using Font Book to deactivate system files, rather
than removing them.

That last part, "area filled with background color", is a telltale
characteristic of not actually having an alpha channel on the image when you
did the erase ... did you double-check that? Because if your steps are correct
then something else must have happened along the way

(I also run GIMP on Win 10 and have yet to find any problems.)

Re: [Gimp-user] Change the UI size?

2016-03-26 Thread Kevin Payne
Dag,

Sorry I haven't explained in more detail what to do with the .7z files.

Yes, you need to put the Color-48 folder (containing all the subfolders) into
your personal GIMP profile Themes folder (C:\Users\Dag\.gimp-2.8\Themes).

BUT - you're using a GIMP 2.9.? version? If you have the option in your
Edit>>Preferences>>Icon Theme, then the theme you have downloaded is not going
to work.

With 2.9.3.???, Icon Themes now control which icons you get BUT the theme
controls which size icons, and as far as I know, no-one has made a suitable
pair that specify and supply larger size icons. Quite frankly, it's a mess at
the moment.

Thank you very much, Kevin!

It might be a good idea, for users like me, to explain how to go about
installing the theme. As I did not realize that these were zipped files, I
started off by just putting the downloaded color theme and symbolic theme files
in what I thought would be the right folder, but, understandably nothing
happened. I then did a search on the file suffix in order to find out that they
were 7zip-files. I have now downloaded and instlled 7zip, and unzipped the files
and I now have a folder named "Color-48" with several subfolders and files in
it, but I am uncertain what to do? Should I place the WHOLE folder as it is in
the Themes folder? Or just some of the files? And on my Windows 10 PC, I found

Re: [Gimp-user] Gimp Font List or remove unwanted fonts

2016-03-26 Thread uga...@talktalk.net

Don't use GIMP to scroll through fonts, use Font Book.app. It is
designed to let you search, organise and manage your fonts.

OSX is preventing you from doing something harmful. Ordinarily you
ought not remove and/or rename System files, nor (as a rule) whould you
add files to the OSX System/Library. Most OSX fonts are not located in
/System/Library/Fonts, but are by default located in Library/Fonts, but
it is also probably a bad idea to change the file names for fonts in
this location too. However, if you are set on this appraoach then you
will probably be better to copy/duplicate font files accross to
/Users/your_user_name/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.8/fonts, and
make any changes to the font file names in this location.

The System wide fonts directory is not listed in GIMP preferences. Also:

Alas, I cannot rename any of the font files in /System/Library/Fonts. While I
can rename files in /Library/Fonts/, that has no effect on GIMP's list of fonts.
Similarly, adding fonts (of any name) to the two GIMP folders (share, and user)
also has no effect on GIMP's list of fonts.

Indeed, cannot remove them from /System/Library/Fonts, not even when logged into

Thank you!

H. I do have an Apple ID and an admin user account (though perhaps not THE
admin user account, if there is such a thing as only one). Also, a couple of
other folks' replies on this thread have suggested better ways I can deal with
the GIMP font-list issue in itself. GIMP is pretty much the only program where
scrolling past a zillion system fonts is a serious problem. Adobe Open Office
also has some of them, but only as families. Three PingFang fonts in a list is
not all that big a deal. Eighteen of them is.

Thanks so much! This looks like awesome advice. On my Mac, preferences is
actually under the GIMP menu, but then yes: Folders > Fonts.

The two "culprit" folders with the fonts I do not want to see are not listed
(namely /System/Library/Fonts/ and /Library/Fonts/), but two GIMP folders are. I
will experiment with putting fonts into the GIMP folders and see if that will
override the default looking into /System/Library/Fonts/ which is the source of
unwanted (the folder I cannot change anything in). Also, I cannot rename
anything in /System/Library/Fonts but can certainly do so in /Library/Fonts/ and
in the two GIMP folders. So I will give that a whirl as well.

Thanks again!

restart the GIMP and see if you have /any/ fonts available. If not,
you can put copies of the fonts you want to use in the GIMP in its

It should be possible to reorder the font listing in the GIMP by

Re: [Gimp-user] Change the UI size?

2016-03-26 Thread Kevin Payne
There are future plans to allow users to allow easier control over the icon
sizes etc, but at the moment it can be done using add-on themes.

You will find links to some themes that I have made that use bigger icons
(either 32x32 or 48x48) that others have found useful here:

Subject: [Gimp-user] Change the UI size?

Hi,

I have just dowloaded Gimp 2.8.16 and installed it on my Windows 10 - 64 bit PC.
However, the user interface with all the icons and texts are too small for me
and it is very hard to read what is on the screen. My monitor size is 3440 X
1440. Of course I can change the size of everything on the screen by using the
Display settings in Windows 10 and set the slider to, say, 150%. But then ALL
applications and windows on the screen get bigger, even if I do not want them
to.

Is there a way to customize the size of textlabels, toobars, icons etc in the
user interface of GIMP?

Thanks!

[Gimp-user] Cloning tool

2016-03-26 Thread MiniBob
I am currently contemplating the installation of GIMP. I do not have it
downloaded yet. I am wondering if GIMP contains a "cloning tool" similar to the
"stamp" tool in Photoshop. I use this tool extensively and would like to have
it available to me in GIMP.

[Gimp-user] Gimp Font List or remove unwanted fonts

2016-03-26 Thread Snowyn
I want to customize the font list shown on GIMP so that it does not show me
fonts I will never use but cannot remove from my system because OS X insists
they are system fonts. However, I don't need Japanese, Hebrew, Chinese, etc
alphabets, and I cannot disable them in the font book, or delete them from the
font folder.

It would also be wonderful if GIMP would condense its font list into families
instead of displaying each individual one. Eg, Arial, Arial Italic, Arial Bold,
and Arial Bold Italic could easily be one entry instead of four. Scrolling past
a gazillion fonts just to reach the one I want to use is getting annoying. It
would also be wonderful if GIMP would allow me to create custom lists, eg
SansSerif fonts, Script fonts, and the like.

BTW, I have looked in my GIMP font folders, both for user and for the
application, and both are empty.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide, or light you can shed on this
situation.
