IMHO, India would have already reached near western standards in GDP if it wasn't for all the controls imposed on production and competition during the Nehruvian dynasty rule, based on Gandhi's swadeshi movement - no doubt a good idea at the time, but unfortunately bad in the long term. Heavy controls unfortunately lead to corruption and the growth of mafias (see what Bombay's and US's prohibition led to). It is competition (whether foreign or local) that goes towards increasing quality. And it is only now that the Indian market has opened up to foreign goods, resulting in markedly improved quality in a lot of goods. (India did have some good-quality stuff before, but the goods were rare and in cases, out-dated.) I only hope for India's sake that companies become more reliable in exports especially with regard to deliveries, and more consistent with quality. [Goanet]Budget 2005 and Aviation
Excerpt From http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-1017498,curpg-2.cms Give wings, will fly TEAM ET TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2005 12:12:15 AM] ... ... Sales tax levied by different states on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) is another irritant the industry wants taken care of. While the tax, which goes as high as 30% in some states, is a state subject,** the Centre can place jet fuel under the deemed import category and levy a nominal duty of 4%.** This will lower costs and bring uniformity in the fuel pricing. The fuel bill typically accounts for 25-30% of the operational costs of airlines. International oil prices have touched all-time highs in the past six months, resulting in very high jet fuel prices. Any concession would therefore give much needed relief to the airlines. VAT may also bring some relief to airlines but it will depend on the rate that is finally fixed. **The 10% service tax on landing and navigation costs is also been viewed with concern by the industry.** Once again last year, A-I had estimated a hike in its expenditure by some Rs 35 crore while the impact on IA was projected at Rs 28 crore. In developed markets like Europe and the US, budget carriers are able to fly to cheaper airports, which are alternate to the main hubs, and contract cheaper fuel, which also help in lowering costs, unlike India where these components are more or less fixed for all airlines. While the PM has committed resources to upgrade airports across the country as part of the government's focus on infrastructure development, a specific direction in the budget will help, analysts say. Airlines are gearing up to introduce more flights in the domestic skies as well as mount more inter-continental services. There is already a 30-40% increase in capacity last year, and more is on the cards. Airlines fear the biggest hinderance to their grow-fast programme will be inadequate infrastructure (read inability of Indian airports to handle the rush). While the civil aviation ministry is already drawing the blueprint to infuse more capacity, precious time may be lost in bureacratic procedures, and **India may lose out once more.** Ditto for Goa? [Goanet]Economy 90 years behind US: WB ( From the Navhind Times)
Economy 90 years behind US: WB PTI Chennai Feb 10: Despite being star performer in terms of economic growth, India will take at least another 34 years to achieve the GDP level of the United States in 1950s, a senior World Bank economist said here today. India is growing faster, but from a low base. At current rate (of growth), India would reach USAs 1950s (GDP) level in 34 years, said Dr Lant Pritchett, lead economist, World Bank, addressing a symposium organised by the Loyola Economics Association for Development. Assuming that Indian economy continues to maintain the current growth rate, it would take another 61 years for the country to catch up with the current economic level of the United States. Not in your lifetime, he told an audience, comprising mainly college students. However, Pritchett said he was bullish on the countrys growth prospects and added that India was a rich country waiting to happen. India is a rich country struggling to free itself of the trappings of poverty. It should not think of itself as a poor country struggling to be modestly less poor, he said. He said a steady economic growth was good for the country and cautioned against an accelerated pace. The ride will be bumpy the faster it (economy) goes, the World Bank official said. Mr Pritchett said the transition of the Indian economy into a successful economy would create social pressures. The social process is going to be tough. Nobody is saying it will be a smooth process, he said. However, India was also not facing the threat of an economic catastrophe as its economy was not booming, he said, drawing a parallel with Brazil and some South Asian economies, which boomed, before going bust. The major risks facing the country were the lack of fiscal means to meet the infrastructure needs, the lagging regions (such as Bihar) in the growth process and bad infrastructure, Mr pritchett said. The private sector could only fund part of the growing infrastructure requirements and a major portion must come from the public sector. This would create pressure on the fiscal deficit, he said. On the income distribution, India fared much better than many other countries during the last decade. India is more equal than any other growing economies. In China, income inequality has increased dramatically in the 1990s, he said. However, in terms of absolute indicators, there has been incredible growth in living standards for a large portion of the people in China, he said, explaining that there would be enormous social pressures as Indian economy takes off, but still it was the better option. === Nagesh Bhatcar Somewhere on Mother Earth
[Goanet]More on Ciggy Lighters
So the question I ask is why do they sell cigarette lighters on the plane. If fact on my flight I could actually buy a pack of two lighters. So interesting Personally I think my idea of selling them at the Anjuna Flea Market to pay for Dabolim to clean its toilets and provide toilet paper is a better explanation The regulation on the IATA site is interesting It states Safety Lighters or matches with fluid/fuel fully absorbed in a solid and intended for use by an individual and carried on ones person. However, lighters with a flammable liquid reservoir containing unabsorbed liquid fuel (other than liquefied gas) lighter fuel or lighter refills are not permitted on ones person nor in checked baggage or carry on baggage Permitted in or as Carry On BaggageNo Permitted in or as Checked Baggage No Permitted on one's person Yes The approval of the operator/s is required No The pilot in Command must be informed of the location No We appear to be missing the point here How did a bag of explosive fireworks get past security at Dabolim. Dave Newbiggin UK snip For safety reasons, dangerous goods as defined in the IATA Dangerous Goods regulations, and which cannot be carried in as passenger checked or carry on baggage are printed on each and every Passenger ticket... cig lighters is one of them... security was not very strict before but after 9/11 they have been strict at some airports. [Goanet]Map of Quitala, Henry T A S Fernandes
My late cousin Henrique was a fascinating man of culture. We shared a common great great grandfather, Cosme Damiao Pinto of Olaulim, who died in 1797. My uncle CD, who was Henry's too (mother's brother), had ever fresh childhood memories of him, which sort of gives me a spiritual life span of four stretched centuries ! Henry's stamp collection was probably the best one ever in Goa. His late brother Joe was the Principal of Goan High in Mombasa in the 1980's. He was a fierce patriot, a trait inherited by his son Hector who has campaigned very hard for common-land rights in Goa. Eric Pinto, writing in the The Bronx. Earlier from Aldona-Net http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aldona-net Just came across this map of Quitla in the 1993-published book 'Fish Curry and Rice: A Citizens' Report on the Goan Environment'. Not sure if it is also available in the updated edition of the book. The map is by Henrique T A S Fernandes. He writes: This map of Quitala (sic, he spells it as Quitula though in the map itself) was prepared as I had a great urge for knowledge, not of any kind in general but about the place of my birth, the place where I was brought up, studied and lived my young days. Fernandes relied on maps of lands of the comunidade, and did the work between 1960 and 1970 in the spare time I could find for this hobby. Fascinating story! FN

[Goanet]Ramoolo and Goanet - A Valentine Story
RAMOOLO AND GOANET A VALENTINE STORY As told by Pandurang Fernandes Here is a Valentine story that my friend Pandurang just told me. It is still unfolding, breaking just in time for this years Valentine day. Pandurang is looking for a bride for his xapotherr son whose mental age has always outpaced his physical age, and has now surpassed middle age. It is too much to handle for a father who still lives in the Middle Ages when the global climate was the warmest ever because of the excessive natural gas released by Pandurangs ancestors and their proliferating cows. Eager to leapfrog into the 21st Century, Pandurang wants a daughter-in-law who is a computer literate information technologist. He would have preferred to focus on the caste instead, except that he is as confused about his caste as he is about his political party. He learned his caste history from a colorful VCD, sanctioned and certified by the Government and his servants. He learned that his ancestors started out as cowherds. They received a promotion to the position of Shudras from an intellectual Hindu Government. This man or his servants told them that they should be happy with their promotion, considering the fact that they were pigs in their previous life. Then a strategic move to a foreign land gave them the opportunity to be reborn as Saraswats. From that point onwards Pandurangs ancestors were on the fast track of upward mobility. This mobility took many of them upwards into the heaven. Those who remained on the ground were offered the prospect of two quick changes of Government position, first a rather persuasive transfer to Islam, and later a convincing upgrade to Christianity, with additional facility to keep the perks they received as Shudras. A final renewal of license by Vishva Hindu Babas and Sangh Parivar Buvas, in the early part of the last century, allowed them to regain all their original privileges as Hindu Shudras, to the fullest possible extent. That is the confusion that Pandurang Fernandes now enjoys, and is grateful to the Hindu, Muslim and Christian Gods for it. He is also grateful to the Government servants for giving him the VCD containing all this misinformation very accurately. Going back to the type of bride that Pandurang wants for his son, he is looking for a girl who has a lot of computer literacy, and is herself the Miss Information Technologist. Recently, after much thought and a private suggestion from one member of the public, he hit upon a brilliant idea to find such a girl. He knew that it is very hard to write an email on a computer, and even harder to cut and paste something in it, or attach articles from the internet to it. So he figured that any girl who knows the technology to send his son the largest number of emails each day with lots of literature on the computer, very good misinformation, and many cut and paste marks or attachments in them, must be an extremely computer literate misinformation technologist. Therefore, he has been monitoring his sons emails for the past three or four weeks. For a while things were routine. Lots of emails, but from different people, boys and girls, men and women. His son appears to have a lot of business dealings with important people in various African and European countries. He receives business offers involving millions of U.S. dollars from colonels, generals, bank managers and even rich wives of ex-presidents and democratic dictators. But this lazy xapotherr never sends them any replies despite Pandurangs telling him that he might be losing the opportunity of his life. As far as emails from any single person are concerned, at first there were many emails from a highly computer literate misterinformation technologist named Mahadev Govinda from Mumbai. Pandurang was obviously not interested in a man, even though someone from Anjediv, Andaman, Nicobar or some such island was disputing his gender, calling her Meghana. Then all of a sudden, a few days ago his son started receiving emails from a new person. She is most definitely a young woman, about his sons age. Her name is Goanet Admin. She must be a beautiful air hostess because she knows a lot about airports, airlines and airfares, and writes many long emails about them. She has been sending emails to Pandurang's son everyday now, usually in sudden spurts of 10 or 15 messages, all at once. She must be really fast at everything thinking, writing, typing, clicking, and cutting and pasting. She knows a lot of literature and a lot of complicated misinformation. She puts it in his computer very very fast. She likes to gossip quite a bit. She gets all the news before anybody else gets it, and sends it to Pandurangs son. She has many friends all over the world, who seem to have birthdays almost every week of the year. She knows all their birthdays, and she wishes them each week. Sometimes she writes the names of her friends at the bottom of her emails, other times not at all. Sometimes she

The aims of 'Celebrate Sport with London 2012' are:to raise awareness of and to celebrate the London 2012 Bid to bring the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to the Capital across the whole region, and to increase the number of Londoners taking part in sport and active recreation. The event is being coordinated by the London 2012 Forum as a way to show how the Capital is backing the Bid. We are looking at developing an extensive regional marketing campaign for the event, which will allow authorities to on sell to local residents. [Goanet]Comment from Dr Ambert Pimenta
Being an old Goanetter (go way back to 1999) , and following Goanet closely from Johannesburg South Africa where i recently moved, the rules then were that personal abuse in any form would not be taken against a fellow member on this group. Why is it then the admin team has taken so long to either edit/delete or terminate the membership of such individuals ( I dont need to name a few people who have been making waves here). What gives me the right the speak?? I have been silent for a few years now ..but the old timers do remember this name as u will see below.. Let people be outspoken here about Goa and Goan issues ..we dont need to know what the Americans or British think here..there are groups to talk about politics and activities thereof in those countries .. Lets bring about some unity and pride in us being called Goenkars !! ( no more crab mentality please) I strongly oppose the new system in place ..if spamers need to get email addresses there is plenty of ways to do that..i believe one can go thru archives of goanet online so what is the admin team trying to do this time!! ... From the very next issue onwards it was Rs. 5/- a copy. Just wait a few weeks. I am willing to wager that they will drop their online subscription drastically one they realise their steep price has no takers. I occasionally used to browse the online edition of Goan Observer whenever I forgot to pick up a copy at the newstand and possibly would have subscribed if it was a reasonable amount. But why should I pay Rs. 1000/- to read a paper online using MY Internet and phone time when I can buy the printed version, and read it at my leisure, every Saturday for Rs. 260/- a year? Perhaps they're targetting overseas Goans. Perhaps they think overseas Goans are suckers to be bled for money. Perhaps they didn't give it much thought. Wait a while. Dear Mr. Nazar da Silva, I thank you for that letter, and Goa Desc for publicising it. [Goanet]Bush to bring home troops via Iran!
http://www.borowitzreport.com BUSH PROMISES TO BRING TROOPS HOME THROUGH IRAN Most Direct Route, President Says Under pressure to detail an exit strategy for Iraq, President George W. Bush said at a White House briefing today that he would not designate an exact timetable for a withdrawal of U.S. troops but added, The fastest way to bring the troops home would be through Iran. After reporters audibly gasped, the president explained that bringing the troops home through Iran would be the most direct route and produced driving directions from Mapquest to back up his claim. But less than an hour after his remarks, Iranian president Mohammed Khatami blasted Mr. Bush's exit strategy, arguing that bringing U.S. troops home through Iran was far from the most direct route, and was, in fact, going totally in the wrong direction. Using a map of the world and a magic marker, President Khatami showed that by traveling east rather than west, U.S. troops would have to circumnavigate the globe in order to reach their final destination. In response, Mr. Bush acknowledged that it would be a long journey, but added, If necessary, we'll stop in North Korea. On a related subject, Mr. Bush said that the vote-counting in Iraq's historic presidential elections was not yet complete but that it looked like the winner would be actor Jamie Foxx, for his performance in Ray. He's won everything else so far, Mr. Bush said. Elsewhere, McDonald's said it would follow up its successful promotion involving a French fry that looks like Abraham Lincoln by creating a Supersize vanilla shake that looks like Dick Cheney. -- Cheers, Gabe. [Goanet]Goanet then and now!
The decision by Goanet-admin to block sender's name and email had drastic consequences on me and my elder son Joshua. In the evenings, Fridays and holidays, when I am unable to access my company provided email, I surf the Goanet archives. It's an addiction which have glued me to the keyboard and brought my outdoor activities to a grinding halt. I have been waiting patiently for Sachin Phadte's reply regarding the controversial VCD on Goa's freedom struggle. Looks like Sachin did take a closer look and saw the evil side of the disgusting VCD. Joshua has taken a keen interest in computers. He knows how to access his favorite car games and his concentration to race all the cars is amazing. I only wished if he had shown half the interest in his studies. Last month as I was reading Goanet archives, Joshua screamed from behind. The sudden scream startled me and I stared back at him to see what the commotion was all about. He blurted out Dad! I saw your name on the screen. No! Scroll up! . It's not easy to control an over excited eight years old. I grudgingly showed him my name and he ran towards the bedroom calling his mother. She stopped whatever she was doing and followed him to where I was with my PC. She casually saw the archives and asked Joshua Where is your Arabic note book? The excitement which was building exited like a deflated balloon. Joshua was grumbling, but his eyes never left the screen. I clicked on the Author and sorted out the list. He counted twelve and his thrill had no bounds. Today as usual I was going through the Goanet archives. I can safely say that I am hooked to Goanet, just like drug addicts are hooked to hashish. I felt Joshua's presence behind me. He was straining and throwing all his weight on my shoulder. He looked at the bottom part of the list and asked me. Who is this Goanet? Where are the other names? What happened to my favorites names Cecil, Jose, Alfred and ... These are the names of Joshua's friends in school and Salmiya chapel. I told him they have replaced all the names with Goanet. He looked at me angrily and said I don't like to see the same name every where, it's kind of boring. I was looking forward to see my name. I know that my name is not common in Goa. But we have quite a few Goan boys in Kuwait with the name Joshua. I looked back and there was no sign of Joshua. I saw him scribbling furiously with a marker on his rough book. I took a closer look to see what he was up to. He had written in bold letters WHATEVER HOPE I HAD OF SEEING MY NAME ON GOANET HAS VANISHED, THIS IS A VERY SAD DAY I hugged him and whispered That makes two of us... Avelino Bastora/Kuwait
[Goanet]Foul Play
Foul Play The Times of India, By Rajindar Sachar 8th February, 2005 Dismissal of Goa Govt Unconstitutional Democracy has been seriously abused in Goa. How else should one describe the Goa governor's dismissal of the Parrikar ministry and his indecent haste in swearing in a Congress ministry? This action, as the Supreme Court said almost 30 years back, is reminiscent of the happenings in the age of Stuarts of England in the 16th century. No doubt, the Speaker's action in expelling independent MLA Rodrigues was equally indefensible, as he had not been disqualified as a member of the assembly. But that does not justify the action of the governor, which suggests that he had decided before hand to dismiss the Parrikar ministry. If the governor was of the view that the Speaker had denied the right of voting to the legislators for whatever reason, he could have asked the chief minister to have a fresh vote in the legislature. Parrikar legally would have had to comply with this direction. The governor could not plead that he could not risk asking the chief minister to seek a fresh vote of confidence, on the pretext that the Speaker could have adjourned the assembly to defeat the vote being taken. This fear is unfounded. Decades back, the Supreme Court while interpreting Article 174(3) of the Constitution had held that the governor had the power to prorogue the House, even if it is in session and further that the House can be re-summoned thereafter to transact the business directed by the governor (in this case) to seek a vote of confidence. And if Parrikar had refused to do so, the governor could legally have dismissed Parrikar and either recommend President's rule under Article 56 or could swear in Rane ministry but with a caveat to him to prove his majority within a week. The governor, however, did not adopt this constitutional method. He tried to exercise royal power a Henry VIII, which is extant since the middle ages in England. In fact, a king of England was even hanged for defying Magna Carta principles. Notwithstanding this history, the governor invoked Article 4, as if to suggest that the chief minister is in the personal service of the governor. Surely, S C Jamir, a former chief minister must know our constitution envisages a parliamentary system of government Both at the Centre and in the states and that neither the president nor the governor can exercise any power at his pleasure. A governor's power is restrained by the Constitution, and he is not meant to act like Henry VIII. On acts of presumptuous arrogance, the Supreme Court gave a firm warning years back when it warned, No one is an imporium in our imperia in our constitutional order. Unchecked power is alien to our system. To make matters worse, the governor swore in the 'expelled' Rodrigues as a minister. It appears that the chief minister has derived some perverse pleasure from this unseemly episode of toppling the government. The sad reality is that the Constitution of India was framed by gentlemen, to be implemented by gentlemen. But when rulers of a different kind occupy such constitutional positions, aberrations bringing disrepute to the high office are bound to take place. This event threatens to plunge the country into bitter political fights,. Shouldn't the Congress and the BJP show some respect to the norms of democratic functioning? It is obvious that with MLAs changing loyalties, the chances to form a stable government seem next to impossible. The Rane ministry is already threatened with a split. The wisdom of both parties lies in their joint request to the governor to dissolve the legislature and order fresh elections. It should also be agreed that the Rane government resign immediately with no caretaker government in the interim. During this interim, governor's rule should apply, without Jamir at the helm, who has forfeited the right to act as a neutral referee. He is rightly accused of having functioned as a stooge if the congress to score a penalty kick in the goal of the BJP. A new governor must be appointed for Goa und whom fresh elections take place. Such a course may stem the tide for bitter-street fighting and restore the system to its normal functioning. After all, it is for the people to elect their representatives. The sanctity of the Constitution is at stake, and it is for political parties to act decisively rather than adopt an amoral position. Questions of convention, probity and political behaviour cannot be left to the wooden and slow approach of courts. The present situation can only heighten political friction and bitterness. The two main political parties should rise above their petty political; postures and think of the institutions at stake. The criteria for selection of governors are a matter of concern. At present, governors owe their appointment to the sole pleasure of the Centre and can therefore afford to behave in a partisan manner.
[Goanet]Goenkars N.B. Vatican tightens code for annulments.
Due acknowledgement to Goan Voice (U.K.) for bringing this to the notice of the Goans. http://www.guardian.co.uk/pope/story/0,12272,1408899,00.html Vatican tightens code for annulments Sophie Arie in Rome Wednesday February 9, 2005 The Guardian Facing an increasing number of marriage annulments, the Vatican yesterday made its first move in 70 years to try to ensure that Catholics do not win the Church's blessing to end their marriages for the wrong reasons. This code aims to help make it easier for the tribunals to ascertain the truth, said Cardinal Julian Herranz, head of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, presenting an updated book of legal guidelines called Dignitas Connubii (The Dignity of Marriage). The Catholic church does not recognise divorce, and annulment is the only way for Catholics to remarry before the church. More than 500,000 annulments are granted by Roman Catholic diocesan tribunals each year, most of them in America. Although civil divorces rule that a marriage has failed, church annulments require proof that a true marriage never existed. Critics say that as divorce has become increasingly common, Catholics have made increasingly ingenious claims to annul their marriages. And church tribunals are increasingly willing to accept new interpretations. In the context of a divorce mentality, even canon processes of annulment cases can be easily misunderstood, as if they weren't anything more than ways to obtain a divorce with the blessing of the Church, said Cardinal Julian Herranz. Acceptable reasons are that one person was tricked or forced into marriage or that a secret was withheld, such as impotence. Recently published Vatican records show new reasons, previously unheard of, for breaking off a marriage. One annulment was granted in 2003 on the basis that the husband had an exaggerated sense of supremacy and warned the wife, before marriage, that if she was not up standard he reserved the right to divorce. -- Cheers, Gabe. On Wed, 9 Feb 2005 21:10:56 + (Hora padrão de Greenwich), [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I had been accompanying with quite some interest the discussion on Goanet about democracies and dictatorships. I wish the discussants could also take up the following texts into consideration http://globalresearch.ca/articles/FRA501B.html Excerpt and response:- Uncle Sam has reneged and defaulted on up to 40% of its trillion-dollar foreign debt, and nobody has said a word except for a line in The Economist. In plain English that means Uncle Sam runs a worldwide confidence racket with his self-made dollar based on the confidence that he has elicited and received from others around the world, and he is also a deadbeat in that he does not honor and return the money he has received. How much of our dollar stake we have lost depends on how much we originally paid for it. Uncle Sam let his dollar fall, or rather through his deliberate political economic policies drove it down, by 40%, from 80 cents to the euro to 133 cents. The dollar is down by a similar factor against the yen, yuan and other currencies. And it is still declining, indeed it is apt to plummet altogether. RESPONSE: If one takes into account that the Euro was floated in 1999 at a rate of around 1.17 US Dollars the devaluation is not that great (around 9 percent). Before the Euro's existence, I have seen and traded the US$ at a high of more than US/Deutsche Marks 3.45 and a low of around US/DM 1.40. So these fluctuations were all within scope despite causing some discomfort at the time for either Europe or the U.S. I believe if and when the Euro devalues more than 25 percent from the Euro's inception rate then one should start worrying. Any way for the moment the Euro/US$ rate is treading water and the US$ might even start to appreciate. The Foreigners are in a bind - Especially Japan and recently China who are accumulating vast holdings of US$. It is not in their interest to see the US$ being dumped. The whole world will be in a bad way if and when foreigners start to panic. Perhaps the US authorities know this and hope the rest of the World will continue to support the mighty USA come what may. cheers, Gabe Wimbledon, London.

[Goanet]A Suggestion for Goanet's New Look
I have a suggestion. Instead of the messages only being identified by the subject, you'll could also include who it's from while just deleting the e-mail address (not the senders name). This way, everyone's happy except spammers. If this is not acceptable, then stick to the present system, but there would not be a need to include the sender header, since we all know that all the mail comes from Goanet admin and removing the sender header would reduce the text displayed on the first part of a Goanet digest. In my opinion, I liked the original look, and think that tacking spam could be done in other ways such as hiding e-mail addresses on the goanet website or restricting the goanet post viewing just to goanet members. [Goanet]Goa CM in the cold
Goas new CM out in the cold --- Deccan Herald Feb 9, 2005 PANAJI, DHNS: It took Congress Legislature party leader Pratapsingh Rane barely six hours to step into the chief ministers shoes after last weeks dramatic turnaround of political events, when he was sworn in as the new chief minister on February 2.Getting recognition from Goa Speaker Vishwas Satarkar has been quite another matter. How will Mr. Rane function if the Speaker refuses to recognise him as the leader of the House? wondered Goa BJP leader Rajendra Arlekar. In fact Mr. Rane continues to operate from the Opposition leaders chamber in the state assembly complex and a letter written to the Speaker by Chief Secretary D S Negi, asking that Mr. Rane be allowed to occupy the chief ministers plush cabin there, has so far been cold-shouldered. Mr Negi confirmed that the letter had been sent and said he had not received a reply from the Speakers office. Mr. Rane was somewhat pragmatic about the matter. He said, Within the Speakers domain, the executive cannot do what it wants. This curious turn of events has come about because the previous government decided to shift offices out of the Adil Shah palace in Panjim that has served as Goas secretariat for over 40 years, to the assembly complex. The new secretariat at Porvorim does not have cabins for ministers who were functioning from their offices in the assembly building. The government is now preparing to shift base back to the palace where cabins are being readied. Till then, Mr. Rane will have to suffer the indignity of being accorded his old status. [Goanet]RE: Children of God
Fred, Yeah, I remember the group very well. They were pretty big in Bombay at the time and I remember one of their slogans. They twisted the Bible saying: God told us to love one another so let's make love. He encouraged women members of the group to engage in what he called flirty fishing. This term was based on Jesus injunction Follow me and I will make you fishers of men. Women members were urged to go to bars and befriend men, seducing them if neccesary in roder to encourage them toward religious conversion. Berg wrote: What better way to show the love of God than to do your best to supply their desperately hungry needs for love, fellowship, companionship, mental and spiritual communication, and physical needs such as food, clothing, shelter, warmth, affection, a tender loving kiss, a soft warm embrace, the healing touch of your loving hands, the comforting feeling of your body next to theirs and yes, even sex if need be! We lost a few youth in our area to this cult which offered them the acceptance and love they were unfortunately missing at home. Their songs distributed under the title Music With Meaning were also popular with the youth in local parishes. An interesting story: The daughter of David Berg wrote a book after she left the cult exposing their practices and detailing the history of the movement. It was a very thought provoking book and gave outsiders a very intimate look into the inner workings of the cult and what keeps members in. The ship Logos had just docked in Bombay to sell Christian books at very discounted rates. This book was one of the best sellers. When the local COG heard about the book, they turned up and bought every single copy available. I'm not sure that their teachings today are as radical as in the early days of the movement, thanks to the spread of STD's. They now call themselves The Family Dan Soares Stony Brook, NY

[Goanet]Interesting Goa link to a global treasure hunt
http://www.smithsonianmag.si.edu/smithsonian/issues04/dec04/peoplefile.html Smithsonian magazine, December 2004 Treasure Quest For more than a decade, American Robert Graf has combed the waters of a Seychelles island for a multimillion-dollar booty stashed by pirates nearly 300 years ago I've been treading water in a small, man-made lagoon for about half an hour, waiting for Robert Graf to surface. The 49-year-old American treasure hunter has cordoned off this rectangular swath of Indian Ocean in the Seychelles, and now he's somewhere 25 feet below, chiseling off chunks of granite and sucking up sand and grit with a four-inch-wide vacuum dredge. He's searching for the entrance to a stone vault that he believes contains a pirate hoardpart of what many consider the largest high-seas heist in historystashed nearly 300 years ago. Back then, locals speculate, the area where we're swimming was dry land, the sea held back by a sand berm later destroyed in a storm. Graf, a former U.S. Air Force technical instructor, breathes through a 50-foot- long bright pink hose attached to an air tank on shore. He wears a face mask, a tattered wet suit and 26 pounds of lead weight strapped to his waist. Every so often I dunk my head, peering through my mask into impossibly blue water. At one point a faint shadow glides over the bottom, then vanishes into a dark ravine. Moments later there's a creepy scraping sound, like someone prying open the lid of a sarcophagus. Graf pops up on the other side of the lagoon. I have maybe three or four feet to go, he shouts. But I'm running out of air. The noise I heard was Graf trying to move several granite slabs, which he says appear to have been hewn by hand and stacked in a kind of capstone. He'll be back again tomorrow with a fresh air tank, and the day after that too. Off and on for 15 years he has been hauling up stone and sand in search of the prize he's confident lies beneath the waters of this rocky beach on Mahé, the largest of the 115 granitic and coralline islands that form the Seychelles. Historians believe that cached somewhere in this far-flung archipelago are the plunders of Olivier Le Vasseur, aka La Buse, or the Buzzard, a French pirate who roamed the Indian Ocean during the early 1700s. In 1721, La Buse, along with English pirate John Taylor and their crews, ransacked the Nossa Senhora do Cabo, a Portuguese frigate undergoing repairs near Mauritius, about 1,000 miles south of the Seychelles. The Cabo carried gold, uncut diamonds and church regalia belonging to the retiring viceroy of Goa. At the time, Goa was a Portuguese colony on the west coast of present-day India. La Buse and Taylor made off with the treasurethen valued at more than a million pounds sterling and divided the spoils. Most of La Buse's considerable fortune, says Frank Sherry, author of Raiders and Rebels: The Golden Age of Piracy, came from his capture of the Cabo. French authorities caught up with La Buse a few years later near Réunion, a rugged volcanic island south of Mauritius. In 1730, as he was about to face the gallows there, the pirate is said to have tossed a sheaf of papers into the crowd, taunting his audience with these final words: My treasure to he who can understand. When I arrive on Mahé, it's easy to spot Graf in the crowd at the airport. He's the only guy wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the classic pirate ensign a skull and crossbones. Tanned and fit, the treasure hunter seems relaxed hardly what you'd expect from someone who has spent a third of his life obsessed with a long-dead pirate. Yet Graf is no laid-back islander. He's in- your-face intense right from the start. I'd barely heaved my suitcase into the trunk of his rusty compact car when he launched into a breathless retelling of how he'd voyaged some 10,000 miles from his Colorado home, married a Seychellois hotel reservations manager and spent more than $450,000 of his own money looking for a treasure that others have failed to find here for nearly a century. In 1923 a rare storm came through the Seychelles, Graf says as we wind through the streets of the capital, Victoria. It eroded many of the beaches. One particular beach was in Mahé near the home of Rose Savy, a local landowner. Thrashing wind and waves had exposed boulders on her property with mysterious markings. According to one version of the story, Savy wrote her nephew, who worked at the national archives in Réunion, with news of the discovery. He thought the markings might be related to a set of 200-year-old papers kept in the archivesthe papers, it's believed, that La Buse had flung at the crowd before his execution. The nephew sent the papers to Savy. There was a cryptogram and four letters, each thought to offer different clues to the treasure. Graf, who moved to Mahé in 1984 to manage a satellite-tracking station for a U.S. defense contractor, first learned about La Buse from a

Maybe it is due to the fact that majority of the passengers from Chennai were in the income bracket in Singapore. On the way back on 19/12/2001), were served a cold meal from Chennai to Mumbai, the bread had frost on it. When inquired from the purser why it was so, was informed that there was no oven on-board. Quering with the purser if he was used to eating frozen bread, drew no response. Could notice NRI passengers from Los Angeles travelling to India via S'pore were given royal treatment with the flight crew at their beck call, as when called upon and indifferent attitude towards others. On the flight's last leg from Mumbai to Goa, could notice a sea- change in the inflight services with the Captain himself giving a running commentary on Goa's beauty, etc., the crew all honey sugar. Could the reason in the attitude change, be due to the fact that majority of the passengers were whites ? The discriminatory attitude towards passengers, whichever sector it may be, should be done away with, as AI should bear in mind that all passengers irrespective of who they are, pay for their fares. Even if any complaint would have served any purpose and I doubt any action would be taken against the crew's misbehaviour due to their labour union affiliations. [Goanet]Goan Dangerous Substances - from The Times of India
Goan for the Jocular by Cecil Pinto -- The new post 9/11 aviation security rules have a long list of items banned inside the airline cabin; powders, pickles, knitting needles, toys resembling weapons, ministers... (just kidding about that last one. The local airlines would all go broke without our frequent flying ministers). Overseas Goans are an apprehensive lot about the consequences of these restrictions. To allay their fears I spoke to Captain Avinash Redkar, Security-In-Charge at Dabolim airport. He's the one who decides who frisks who! Cecil: Captain Redkar, What are the common items that overseas Goans take abroad that are on the banned list? Redkar: Actually sir, each Airport has been given it's own authority to decide. We have discretionary powers and use pre-set guidelines to decide on every item. Cecil: Could you give us some examples? Redkar: Well take the multi-layered Bebinca. This is definitely on our banned list. Cecil: Bebinca ? How could that possibly be dangerous? Redkar: With modern technology one could have different explosive materials on different layers. One jab through the middle and the various chemicals on the layers combine and explode. Imagine the scenario: A passenger standing in the aisle with a Parker pen raised high in one hand, all set to poke a round bebinca in his other hand. Everyone crouching in fear, under their seats. Cecil: What about tamarind 'amtam' that is also often carried back? Redkar: Definitely out. Have you ever seen RDX? It looks exactly like a ball of tamarind 'amtam'. Cecil: I suppose liquids like vinegar can safely be carried? Redkar: It is almost impossible to distinguish between acetic acid and vinegar. One drop of acetic acid on a harmless substance like Goan dodol or doce and we have a potentially explosive situation. Cecil: Folks please do not try this at home. Captian Redkar I suppose cashewnuts are a safe bet? Redkar: Permitted, but only in very small quantities. Maybe a maximum of 200 grammes per passenger. You see large quantities of cashewnuts, if consumed in a hurry, cause flatulence. Imagine this scenario: A passenger standing next to the AC air vent with an open packet of cashewnuts. Tell the pilot to take this plane to New York immediately. Or else I will eat some more cashewnuts!. All the passengers are disgusted by now and have their noses covered. The barf bags supply has been exhausted. They beg the cabin staff Please do whatever he says. We can't take this stink anymore!. Cecil: What about sausages? Redkar: Potential killers. Have you seen the fat content in those things? Specially the small tiny ones from Agacaim. Polysaturated fat. We could have harakiri suicide hijackers threatening to eat sausages and die slowly from excess cholesterol. Imagine the scenario. Cecil: Ok! Ok! I get the picture. So then Caju Feni is a definite no-no? Redkar: On the contrary Caju Feni is being viewed favourably by the security authorities. It has many medical curative properties that could be useful in an emergency. Secondly nobody really gets violent with small quantities of Caju. And if the Cashewnut Flatulator Hijacker makes good his threat we could just open a bottle of Caju. His smell would be overwhelmed by the Caju Feni smell and ... --- The humour column above appeared in Goa Plus the Friday Magazine section of The Times of India on 8th November 2002. =

Fransa shock Dempo February 09, 2005 21:34 IST Federation Cup champions Dempo suffered their first defeat as they went down 0-1 to debutants Fransa in a seventh round match of the 9th National Football League in Margao, Goa, on Wednesday. The winning goal came in the 69th minute, when Sebastiao Endro back-headed a lob by defender Cersson Antao's to beat the advancing Dempo custodian, Satish Kumar. It was not Dempo's day as the woodwork twice foiled their attempt to take the lead in the first half. Dempo even wasted a penalty in the second half as Fransa 'keeper Kalyan Chube, who was declared the man of the match, dived to his left to thrawt Ranty Martins's attempt from the spot. The penalty was awarded by referee Subrata Sarkar after defender A S Feroze brought down R C Prakash inside the box. The victory took Fransa's tally points tally to 13 points from seven matches, the same as Dempo, who have played one match less. East Bengal lead the table with 14 points from six matches.

No wonder a guide to beating the beer gut has become a bestseller in the States. What's more, it works, says Clint Witchalls 08 February 2005 When I put on weight, it goes straight to my stomach; the rest of me remains skinny. After Christmas, I resembled a python that had eaten a Swiss Ball. In diet-speak, I'm an apple rather than a pear. This is a dangerous shape to be (apple folk tend to die young from heart disease, whereas pear-shaped people live to a ripe old age, dragging their saggy arses behind them). I turn 40 this year, so I thought it might be a good idea to find my abs, as I haven't seen them since 1973. The book focuses on 12 power foods and an exercise plan. There is no silver bullet. No simple message like: cut all carbohydrates from your diet, or only eat foods with a low glycaemic index. Instead, the authors, David Zinczenko and Ted Spiker, have collated the latest research on diet and exercise, and put it together in a book that is readable, blokeish and funny. . The exercise plan looked a lot more inviting than the recipes. I kicked off with the regime on 1 January. In the first two weeks, I lost 4kg and I can now feel, although not see, my abdominal muscles. My stomach is flatter than it has been in years, and I'm happy. .. Zinczenko says that his father led by negative example. He was about 100lb overweight for most of his adult life. I watched him get really fat, then get high blood pressure, then diabetes, then have a minor heart attack, and then finally die at 52 of a massive stroke. It made me think: 'I don't want to do this to my kids'. Today, Zinczenko is a model of good health, and he wants to share his formula with the world. . I ask Zinczenko if it isn't a frivolous and narcissistic goal to try to achieve a six-pack. People say that if you want abs, you must be vain, but it couldn't be further from the truth, he says. There are lots of health benefits to having a flat stomach. You're going to live longer; you're going to have a better sex life; you're going to have more energy; you're going to beat back pain; you're going to be better at sports - because you're core is the power centre for all of the body's movement. Plus, you're going to keep a bunch of diseases and illnesses at bay, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and some forms of cancer. Abdominal fat is the deadliest fat in the whole body. Zinczenko and Spiker are cautious not to suggest that you can spot-reduce - an idea that has been rubbished by most dieticians. Nowhere do they suggest that you can target specific body fat by eating certain foods. What they do say is that if you lower your body fat, you'll be likely to notice much of that loss around your middle, where most of the fat accumulates. In order to lose fat, not only does Zinczenko advocate eating the right fats (monosaturates and polyunsaturates) and carbohydrates (complex), he also advocates eating calcium-rich foods, such as Parmesan cheese. Zinczenko calls calcium the miracle mineral. For some reason, it seems to have the effect of preventing or making it harder for new fat to form in the body, and at the same time helping to strip away existing fat, he says. The Abs Diet gives the lowdown on all the nutrient-rich foods that we should be eating more of, as well as foods that should be assiduously avoided. The two hoodlums that are contributing to the obesity epidemic are trans fats and high-fructose corn syrup, says Zinczenko. The problem with high-fructose corn syrup is that it shuts off your appetite control-switch and makes you hungrier. It's an insidious substance that encourages you to eat more. In the early 1970s, if you gave someone a two-litre bottle of Coke and said, 'drink all of this', they'd be gagging after a few minutes. Now, with high-fructose corn syrup, you can sit down with a big bottle of soda and plough through it and still feel thirsty. Most diet books shy away from the E-word, exercise, but The Abs Diet contains a photo-illustrated section on exercise, not only to build powerful abdominal muscles but also the large muscle groups around your back, shoulders and legs. The idea is that, for each pound of muscle that you develop, your body needs to burn up 50 extra calories to maintain that muscle. The Abs Diet combines exercise with foods that promote muscle growth; foods that are nutrient-rich and raise your metabolism naturally so that you can strip away fat. On the Abs Diet, you're encouraged to eat six times a day: three meals and three snacks. By doing this, you're sending the signal to your body that there's no famine looming. Zinczenko believes that one of the reasons that restrictive diets don't work is that your body is always bracing itself for

Re: [Goanet]Is India a racist country (fwd)
On a recent visit to India, we too paid very high prices for entry everywhere; as well as to be 'upgraded' from Delhi to Goa (Indian Airlines) after an accident. All 'foreigners' are charged exhorbitant prices and that includes NRI's: non-resident Indians! Eg A visit to the Taj Mahal: resident Indians paid Rs 20 and we paid Rs 750!! While we concede that non-residents or foreigners should pay more, we find that the charges are disproportionately higher and grossly unfair. [Goanet]Feedback to new Goanet posting policy (FN on behalf of Admin Team)
Dear Goanetters We've received considerable feedback to the new policy on dropping email addresses from the participants' postings. Needless to say, the Goanet Admin Team will take all points of view into account, while adopting a policy that is in the best interest of Goanet and its members. I would like to add that while Herman -- as the Goanet Chair -- as is usual took on the responsibility of announcing the new policy, it was a decision taken by the Goanet Admin Team (including myself) after considerable discussion. So don't criticise Herman as someone who posts those crucial posts that seem to carry bad-news ;-) Another issue that comes up here is that, as a public mailing list, we at Goanet really needs a sustainable way of archiving all posts. This would help our discussion to continu 'living' on in cyberspace for as long as possible. Goanet is therefore archived at mail-archives.com. This is certainly helpful. It ensures that we will *not* simply lose our archives if we change servers (as happened with the first five to six years of Goanet archives, currently largely untraceable ... meaning we are suffering from a lengthy period of lost history). But on the other hand, it also means that you email address is out there on google.com, a situation some may not be happy with, because of its implications in terms of spam. We do understand the points raised, and will do our best to work out a suitable fair and satisfactory to most (if not all). Your feedback is appreciated, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Frederick Noronha (FN) On behalf of Goanet-Admin Team (This may be treated as an 'interim' response, to take care of the time-zone differences of other Admin Team members. [Goanet]'' MHOZO HERO'' ALBUM RELEASED
'' MHOZO HERO'' ALBUM RELEASED A new Konkani musical album 'Mhozo Hero' (My Hero) has been released and is on sale in Goa, Mumbai and Kuwait. 'Mhozo Hero', produced by Alfonso Bond Braganza for Music House Production, Mapusa, consists of 12 soulful new catchy compositions, each on a different subject, having music arrangement by Maestro Josinho. The title song is sung by Goa's young singing sensation Ms.Veeam. The other artists are Prince Jacob, Humberto, Lawry, H. Britton, Ms.Roshan, Ms.Raisa and Alfonso Bond Braganza. Seven-year-old Junior Bond makes his debut in this album by singing a duet with Roshan. Lyrics are written by Afonso Bond, while the special attraction of this album is a rare appearance by Joaquim D'Souza on the flute and Winston Colaco on the violin. Alfonso Bond and Roshan also do a duet in a inimtable style of late Robin Vaz. A mando by Veeam and Lawry steals the hearts of many specially the ones who have their husbands working on the ship. H. Britton too comes alive with two naughty songs with a style of his own. Prince Jacob and Supremo Humbert do a trio with Lawry on the latest political scenes in Goa. The album is well accepted by the konkani music lovers and is on a fast move as far as sale is concern. Earlier Alfonso Bond had released Mhaka Jieonk Dhi album which was also a great success.

[Goanet]Ciggerette (sic) lighters at Dabolim Airport
This problem basically reflects the holy cow attitude to security matters. It applies at the level of the entire Dabolim airport (vis a vis the Navy) and it applies at the lowly level of security check before boarding a flight as in this case. No rational discussion seems possible. These guys seem to be just following the letter of the law but not the spirit. In their preoccupation with cigarette lighters (but not firecrackers) who knows what real security risks the flights to Mumbai and Delhi are running. Interestingly, the complaint has coincided with a Tourism Ministry campaign to improve attitudes of functionaries like taxi drivers, tourist police etc towards tourists. Goa is reportedly covered in the first phase and the tourism Minister herself was in town recently to kick it off here. Unfortunately there is no mention in the news report of airport security screeners who are undergoing the training. It may even be too late to get them included in this round. But some urgent efforts should be made to include them in future. The paper (HERALD) has even devoted an editorial to the views of the Tourism Minister i.e. regarding the need for more night life. The reason for mentioning this here are twofold. First of all, wonder of wonders, there is a stray reference in it to problems at Dabolim for reasons that will be evident below. But in keepng with the editorial focus on making tourists (rather than service providers) smile, it talks about the holding up of planes full of sweating tourists on the tarmac due to lack of parking space. But in all these months there has been no editorial on the overall Dabolim problem or even the Indian aviation scene. But the second and more unfortunate issue is that the editors seem to have a marked tendency to blow up a simple suggestion into a myriad of problems requiring solution (such as additional Dabolim terminals). In this way all efforts to solve a particular problem are nullified because of such extraneous comments and suggestions. Philip Thomas Ribandar-Goa

KGTS's Mega Musical Show KONKANNI MACHIEAK NOMAN. By Welly Dias The Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvsta (KGTS), On 04th Feb., 2005 held its mega musical show entiltled Konknni Machiek Nomann at GES Auditorium Kuwait. Succor and his ensemble of musicians did a superb job in providing the musical score for the show. Jose Rod's prowess (in presentation, direction, composition and singing) were to the fore as his touch was visible during the presentation. Domnic, John D'Silva, Luis Bachan, Francis de Tuem, Nelson, Mario, Jose Rod and others provided the humor element which sent the audience into raptures of laughter. During the course of the show there were solos, duos, trios, etc., which the Kuwait based artistes as well as the visiting artistes contributed. Kuwait based Adolf rendered 2-songs from the Konknni film Bhuerantlo Munis. Adolk also lent his vocals to the Tsunami song together with Jose Rod and Lorna. The evening's main draw was none other than Goa's nightingale, LORNA. Her rendition of most of the favourite oldies composed by Chris Perry with her awesome vocals regaled the audience. KGTS' beneficiaries ( the senior retired Konknni stage artistes) for this year were announced. Trumpeter Agnelo Dias and actress Sabina were presented plaques. Tributes were paid to M. Boyer on being awarded the Padma Shree and also the late saxophonist Juju for his contribution to the Konkani stage. The show was a success with some innovative presentation concepts, good crowd attendance, direction, singing, etc. The KGTS, its members, contributors, artistes, musicians and all are to be congratulated for the successful presentation. [Goanet]Sunday Reflections - First Sunday of Lent (Fr Jude Botelho)
7-2-05 Dear Friend, Today we begin a new season, the season of Lent. Lent is associated with penance and people do not look forward to this season, yet the Church calls Lent a joyful season because the focus is not so much on penance for the sake of penance, but rather on preparing for the great mysteries of Easter. May His Word help us to make right choices. Have a joyful Lenten weekend! -Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: First Sunday of Lent Lead us not into temptation 13-2-05 Readings: Genesis 2:7-9; 3: 1-7; Romans 5: 12-19; Matthew 4: 1-11; In the first reading from the Book of Genesis we have the story of the tempting of Adam and Eve and in the Gospel we have the story of the tempting of Jesus. These are two sophisticated stories, and are not meant to be taken literally. They are essentially about making choices. The reading from Genesis tells us that Adam and Eve were given the possibility of making a choice. The basic fundamental choice was to live for God, dependant and obedient to His will, or to say 'no' to God, severing themselves from him and live in the illusion that they did not need God. They were tempted by the serpent, the symbol of Satan. They were tempted through deceit. They were tempted to believe that they could be Gods themselves. They disobeyed; they sinned and had to face the consequences of their choice. Temptations An American Indian was giving testimony about temptations. He said, My brothers, I seem to have two dogs fighting in my heart. One is a very good dog, a beautiful white dog. He is always watching over my best interests. The other is a very bad dog, a black dog, who is always trying to destroy a lot of things that I want to see built up. These dogs give me a lot of trouble because they are always quarreling and fighting. One of his hearers asked him. Which one wins? The young man said immediately, The one to which I say: 'sic em'. -Shades of: If you walk in the Spirit, we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.. H.A. Ironside in 'Tonic for the Heart' In the second reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans Paul reminds us of the social consequences of sin. Sin is never a private affair affecting only myself. When we sin all our relationships get affected: our relationships with our inner self, our relationships with our brothers and sisters, our relationship with our God and our relationship with nature and the world in which we live. The harmony is shattered and division and disintegration sets in. However, Paul reminds us that just as Sin came into the world through the disobedience of one man, Adam, so through the obedience of one man, Jesus Christ, forgiveness and reconciliation is granted to us. In the gospel we are reminded that just as the first Adam was tempted, so the new Adam, Jesus Christ was also tempted. Just as Adam and Eve had to make a choice so Jesus to had to make choices and re affirm his obedience to doing the will of his Father. Unlike Adam he made an irrevocable decision to do the Father's will no matter what the consequences. In today's gospel we see Jesus being tempted by Satan. It is a common practice for great religious leaders to go to a remote place to be alone with God and their own thoughts as they prepare to undertake some new direction or vocation in life. Jesus prepares him self by forty days of prayer and fasting in the desert. The prayer and fasting is not an end in itself but a preparation for his mission. Our own prayer and fasting during this season of lent is not an end in itself but a preparation for our conversion and reconciliation with God. Is it a saint or a horse? Once upon a time a very earnest young man visited a famous rabbi. He told the rabbi he wanted to become a rabbi and asked for his advice. It was winter time. The winter stood at the window looking out into the yard while the rabbinical candidate gave him a glowing account of his piety and learning. The young man said, You see, Rabbi, I always dress in spotless white like the sages of old. I never drink any alcoholic beverages; only water ever passes my lips. I perform numerous penances. For instance, I always carry sharp-edged nails inside my shoes to mortify me. Even in the coldest weather, I lie naked in the snow to punish my flesh. And to complete my penance, I take a dozen lashes every day on my bare back. As the young man spoke, a stable boy led a white horse into the yard and took him to the water trough. The horse drank his fill of water, and having done so rolled in the snow, as horses sometimes do. Just look! cried the rabbi. That animal too is dressed in white. It also drinks nothing but water, has nails in his shoes and rolls naked in the snow. Also rest assured, it gets its daily ration of lashes on the rump from its master. Now I ask you, is it a saint or is it a horse? -The point the rabbi was making was that penance is not an end in itself. What is the purpose of penance? It is not meant to undo the past -the past is done. Nor is it

Regarding Halur Rasho, I have no idea what he or she thinks about this. As I have stated once before, I am not Halur Rasho. I hope he will reveal his identity one of these days, and release me of this suspicion that Mr. Gabe Menezes has about me. I don't know what I can do to prove that I am not Mr./Ms./Mrs. Rasho. It is impossible to gain the trust of someone on a mailing list such as Goanet. However, while I am at it I would also like to mention that I am not Bernado Colaco. The only pseudonym I have used on Goanet is Pandurang Fernandes, but he has always posted from my email address, and many of my posts have had a disclaimer at the bottom indicating that Pandurang was indeed the alter-ego of Santosh. Perhaps the Goanet Admin will now put a new format to the archives, as one will not be able to dig up a thread by 'Author'. I think this is definitely a problem. But there should be an easy solution for it. The archives have never revealed the email address. They only showed the name of the poster before. I don't know why that system has not been maintained. It should be easy to reinstate it. Spam can come into your email box through random selection by new software employed by computer geeks. So the excuse for this new format does not hold good. As just explained, the spam one is talking about here is personalized or targeted spam from subscribers of Goanet to specific email addresses, depending on what views they express on this list. [Goanet]The Children of God
Do you remember the Children of God? I recall this group from the Goa of the 'seventies. Just came across a link to them on the Internet, which I thought of sharing with you. FN (Frederick Noronha) At a cybercafe, Panjim --- http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.religion/browse_thread/thread/3ee55bafea97d2fa/a8adfe30b5fc62b7?q=Goa+India_done=%2Fgroups%3Fq%3DGoa+India%26start%3D0%26scoring%3Dd%26_doneTitle=Back+to+Searchd#a8adfe30b5fc62b7 The Children of God was founded almost 40 years ago in California. Berg, born in 1919, was a radical thinker who believed that he could spread the Gospel by embracing the Zeitgeist of the 1960s hippy counterculture. The result was a hybrid mix of free love and happy-clappy evangelism that some directionless young people found irresistible. Within ten years his Christian ministry had attracted thousands of followers worldwide. By the late 1970s, by then called The Family, the organisation had set up more than 150 communes and missions from Glasgow to Goa. Today there are about 12,000 members living in more than 100 countries. Always on the move, Berg, who had renamed himself Moses, ministered to his flock through an endless series of Mo Letters that governed every aspect of life within The Family. In particular, they espoused sex, and lots of it giving and sharing yourself with others as a means of glorifying Christ. RE: [Goanet]GOANET ADMIN: Announcement regarding Email Privacy
Herman, I don't like your new procedures. As it is, the Admin team screened all or most of the mails. Even now, you have the right to reject any unsigned mail or offensive material. The previous arrangement allowed me to delete mails written by certain folks, even without opening them and I am sure many must have been deleting mails with my name on it! Also, most e-mails are in the public domain and spamming is a problem that each one has to deal with, on his/her own. I don't think that I received any spam mails solely by being on the mailing list of Goanet for a decade. I am sure there is going to be quite a discussion on this topic alone! [Goanet]Beginning of the end of Goanet?
After Parrikar's govt. it looks like it is going to be the end of Goanet. Whoever has come up with this new procedure should be given a Nobel prize for his ignorance of the internet. he/she should have at least done a preliminary study of how thousands of mailing lists exist on the internet which provide good communication as well as take procedures to avoid spam. Does Goanet have any meaning if the only way one can communicate with the poster is via goanet itself? This is apart from the fact that the only way to find out who has written the post is to actually look at the post. How much can a name signed such as joe can reveal. This can waste a huge amount of time. It is disgusting, and I will have no other way but to be out of here if this continues. I surely dont have the time to sift through every post. samir kelekar [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Goanet]Green mussels. (GT)
GREEN MUSSELS GIVE STRENGTH TO ANTI-AIDS, CANCER CAMPAIGN: Scientists at NIO have discovered that green mussels, found in abundance in the west coast are not just a delicacy but it holds tremendous potential for developing effective drugs for anti-tuberculosis and Gemini virus. In addition to being an inexpensive source of proteins, green mussels also hold the key to radio protection for cancer patients. (Preetu Nair in GT) Also F.Y.I. http://www.truestarhealth.com/Notes/286.html Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a New Zealand shellfish, from which an extract has been shown to be useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). Green-lipped mussel inhibits inflammation in the body. Although inflammation is normal under certain conditions, consistent or excessive inflammation can result in pain and damage to the body, including the joints. The human body makes several chemical mediators of inflammation. Levels of these chemicals in the body may be higher in people with RA who are experiencing symptoms than in symptom-free people with arthritis.1 Evidence indicates that controlling the production of inflammatory mediators in the body may help improve conditions such as arthritis, asthma, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease (including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), all of which involve elements of inflammation.2 Research on green-lipped mussel has focused primarily on OA and RA. Although some studies have failed to demonstrate therapeutic benefit of green-lipped mussel in people with arthritis,3 4 the outcomes of other studies have been more positive.5 6 7 In one trial, both freeze-dried powder and lipid extract of green-lipped mussel were effective at reducing symptoms in 70% of people with OA and 76% of people with RA.8 A similar study of people with either OA or RA showed green-lipped mussel reduced pain in 50% and 67% of the patients, respectively, after three months of supplementation.9 In 1986, dried mussel extracts became available that were stabilized with a preservative. The earlier studies that found no beneficial effect of green-lipped mussel on arthritis all used preparations that had not been stabilized, a point that may help explain some of the discrepancies in the research. One recent animal study compared the two forms and found a stabilized lipid extract to be significantly more effective than a nonstabilized extract at inhibiting inflammation.10 Because both forms are currently available on the market, it may be prudent to check on the form. Nonsteriodal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen, are often used for inflammatory conditions. However, most of these medications can produce the unfortunate side effect of stomach irritation, which may lead to stomach ulcer if taken frequently. One animal study found that green-lipped mussel significantly reduced stomach ulcers resulting from taking NSAIDs.11 In a double-blind study of people with asthma, supplementation with a proprietary extract of New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Lyprinol®) twice a day for 8 weeks significantly decreased daytime wheezing and improved airflow through the bronchi.12 Each capsule of Lyprinol® contains 50 mg of omega-3 fatty acids. Where is it found? Green-lipped mussels are found in the oceans off New Zealand. In supplement form, green-lipped mussel is available as a lipid extract or a freeze-dried powder. -- Cheers, Gabe. [Goanet]Salgaocar rally to hold Churchill
Salgaocar rally to hold Churchill February 08, 2005 21:49 IST Salgaocar capitalised on a defensive lapse of Churchill Brothers to hold them to a 1-1 draw in a sixth round match in the National Football League at Nehru stadium in Margao, Goa, on Tuesday. Marcos Pereira, who played his first match after being taken on loan from Salgaocar, gave Churchill lead in the fifth minute when he floated the ball home off a free-kick. The ball flew past the rival wall and beat goalkeeper Juje Siddi to find the far post. Salgaocar came back strongly in the second half and restored parity through Felix Ibrebru in the 60th minute. Samson Singh snatched the ball from defender Subhashish Roy Choudhary and relayed it to Ibrebru, who after entering the box, beat keeper Mark Mascarenhas with a fine placement. The draw took Salgaocar to seven points. They moved to sixth place, displacing JCT on goal difference while Churchill, who have two points, are at the bottom.
[Goanet]Wage a war against British corporate
WAGE A WAR FOR A WAGE Action Alert-IV Goa Justice and Labour Foundation thanks you once again for your response in terms of solidarity for our passed three action alerts. Also our support and appreciation for those attempting to conscientize the workers on the ruthless exploitation unleashed by the tsunami of Neo-colonialism-that is represented by the Multinational such as British corporate - Travelpack. Multinational corporate migratory Bird Travelpack is sitting exactly in the heart of Panjim-capital town of Goa-India, employing 135 employees possessing university degree with pienut as salary. Workers are working on a shift basis working at the night shift means the double wages as that of day. The salaries that are paid do not match the inflation in the market leading to continuous pauparisation of the working class. Rice price in kilograms varies from Rs.15 to Rs. 60 the high quality Rice Basmati cost Rs.60per kg. Does the salaries paid in Travelpack permit workers and to their families to consume high quality of Rice-Basmati? or is it a previlage of the few filthy rich in a Corporate Raj? Besides Rice ofcourse there are other requirements for daily meal of fish, curry, and rice. Transnational Leasure Corporate Travelpack has continued tightening the belt of exploitation. Travelpack is busy robbing salaries of Albert Rodrigues who is working as a Driver with salary of Rs.3380per month. In a Month of October 2004 Travelpack robbed him by Rs. 465/- In a Month of November 2004 Travelpack debited his salary of Rs. 465/- giving false explaination that he has taken as loan. In a Month of December 2004 Travelpack continued the loan fraud and deducted more of Rs. 465/- from his salaries. In a Month of January 2005 loan fraud has continued as there is a further deduction of Rs. 465/- as loan installments. Total amount robbed from his salaries (of Rs.1500 Basic) has reached to Rs. 1860/- that means the actual monthly salary in the pass four months is Rs. 1035/- (excluding other allowances). Once again we acknowledge what it takes to live in the days of inflation:- Breakfast-50 Lunch-50 Dinner-50 Transport-30 Personal saving-40 Total Rs. 220per day. So minimum monthly salary one require is Rs. 6600 plus burden of different state taxes and bills and rest family expenditure. Should firms like Travelpack who base their gigentic profits on limitless labour exploitation be allowed to operate at all in Goa? The presence of Travelpack is more of a Curse to Goa. than a Boon; siphoning the pockets of workers is a casual activity e.g. salary deduction and loan deduction (more of fraud) of Albert Rodrigues. Travelpack dictates the labour polices and not the working class-even though the brunt is beared by the workers. On the one side there is salary deduction and on the other side there is inflation, to add insult to the injury, there is no corresponding rise in the wages. This situation of humiliation of working class must be stopped. Goa Justice and Labour Foundation demands the following from Travelpack -immediately. 1. Payment of Rs. 09 Million (112500 Pounds) (152542.37 Euros) (209302.33 Dollars) as damages for Mental Torture due to Travelpacks fraud labour practices meted out to Albert Rodrigues and his Family. 2. Deducted amount (Robbed) so far from Albert Rodrigues salaries be repaid with interest. 3. Daytime salaries be revised and increased. Night time salaries be doubled to all the Travelpack-Goa's 135 employees. Appeal for solidarity Action:- * Speak to tourist about the labour exploitation carried out by British Corporate-Travelpack in Goa. * Enlist support of the International and Domestic travellers against murdourious practice carried on by Travelpack to torture workers in Goa. * Request workers of the world to Think, Speak, Write, Publish, and Circulate the atrocities caused by corporate capitalism. I disagree with this new policy for a couple of reasons: 1. I sort my in box by sender, and only read certain posters to Goanet more than threads or subjects. I do not want to wade through the 40-50 emails every day to look for certain senders. The new policy is not a small price to pay, it is a big price to pay. 2. I am appreciate the Admin's concern for privacy, but spam is all over. The spammers already have my email address, Goanet cannot help any further or at this stage. 3. The suggestion of one member should have been offered to the group before implementation, assuming the group agreed. 4. They rejected my following message twice, presumably on the grounds that I had not signed my name at the bottom: I like this new procedure of not revealing the identity of the poster. [Goanet]Goa CM allocates portfolios
Goa CM allocates portfolios February 08, 2005 20:10 IST Nearly a week after he was sworn in, the Goa Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane allocated portfolios to his ministers on Tuesday. The former Bharatiya Janata Party ministers who had crossed over to the Congress retained their old portfolios, while two Congress members in the Cabinet refused to accept any ministry until the government proved its majority on the floor of the House. Former BJP minister Pandurang Madkaikar retained the transport and revenue portfolios, while Sudin Dhavalikar of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party retained public works department, fisheries and archives departments. Independent MLA Filipe Neri Rodrigues was allotted water resources. Isidore Fernandes, who along with Atanasio Monserrate had led the revolt against the BJP, was allotted the industries ministry. Given the dicey situation in the assembly, the survival and stability of government is dependent on the support of MGP, Nationalist Congress Party and the former BJP MLAs, whose resignation triggered the chain of events leading to the fall of the Manohar Parrikar government. Both Congress ministers, Luisinho Faleiro and Dayanand Narvekar, have refused to accept a portfolio for now. Dr Wilfred D'Souza of NCP will handle tourism for now and we may consider giving him more ministries later, Rane said. On whether there would be two deputy chief ministers, Rane, who was sworn in on February 2 soon after the dismissal of the Parrikar government, said, Yes. There will be two posts. I don't mind having two deputy chief ministers. In fact they are all my DCM's. However, he did not say whether the two DCMs would be Rodrigues and D'Souza, whose names were doing the rounds. [Goanet]Cong orchestrated Parrikar govt ouster: NDA
Cong orchestrated Parrikar govt ouster: NDA New Delhi, Feb 8: Bringing the dismissal of the BJP government in Goa to the forefront of its campaign against the UPA government, the opposition NDA today hit the streets accusing the Centre of orchestrating the ouster and indicated that it will stall the proceedings in the coming budget session of Parliament on the issue. Kick-starting its nationwide agitation against the dismissal of the Manohar Parrikar government, the NDA staged a day-long sit-in here demanding its reinstatement and recall of Governor S C Jamir. Lashing out at the Congress, BJP president L K Advani said, The question is not about the dismissal of Goa government. It is about the Congress' attitude towards democracy. Whenever the Congress feels that it is losing its primacy, it never believes in democracy and tramples democracy, and this agitation is to save the power of democracy, he said. Asserting that the Governor has set a dangerous precedent, Advani said, Our constitutional fathers have never imagined that Article 164, which says a particular state government can remain in power only when the Governor has full pleasure in it, would be used in this manner. He claimed that the direction to dismiss the government was given in advance, even before the trial of strength on the floor of the House. Addressing the gathering, BJP general secretary Sushma Swaraj said normal functioning of Parliament during the budget session would not be possible in the given situation. Parrikar, who was also present, alleged that he was a victim of a conspiracy hatched by the Congress. Goa was the leading state in the country in terms of development and figures by the RBI and the Planning Commission are proof to that. Since the UPA government came to power, they started attempts to dethrone my government. First they removed the Governor and then sent a person, who himself has six defection cases against him, with a single target to destabilise the government, he charged. In a show of strength, all top BJP leaders, including Chief Ministers of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, NDA convenor George Fernandes, leaders from Shiromani Akali Dal, Trinamool Congress and Biju Janata Dal participated in the sit-in.
