[Goanet] The Charms of Goan Dhobitalao
Eugene, Timothy died some years back. Snowflake is in full swing, at present the only Goan eatery in dhobitalao, so also our friend sportman Irineu. A couple of years back Timothy's children were in the news - the son shot at her sister, luckily she survived. The case is still going on. Fausto On Mon, Mar 7, 2011 at 3:18 AM, Eugene Correia eugene.corr...@gmail.com wrote: Mary D'Mello is frank too in giving out the details of her uncle Joe. I knew him very well. Occassionally, my Snowflake friend would buy feni from him. Many times I drank along with my friend. Marie should remember Lalit Bar, whose owner was a Manglorean who married a Goan. His name was Timothy and he was one of Mumbai's notorious bootlegger. He bought a posh flat in the Nariman Point area. He got shot and lay paralyzed. Not sure if he is still living. He gave Snowflake people lot of trouble as he wanted them to sell the restaurant to him. He lived in the building on the other side of the restaurant. Is this also gossip, dear JC? Probably to you such facts don't matter because to you people who lived in Dhobitalao were depraved and perhaps had no high morality as you possess. Journos like me are not as elitist as you, a doctor. Eugene

Later in 1975 he established his residence and 'Rebello Hospital Clinic' at Madel, Margao. He was one of the renowned Gynaecologist and Obstreticians in Goa. He participated in the movements for Goa's liberation as well as for retaining Goa as a separate entity. His contribution to the Konkani language is considerable. He was a founder member and staunch worker of Konkani Porjecho Avaz which was established to fight for making Konkani the Official language of Goa. He was an enthusiastic member of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Goa and served as its Vice-President and as General Secretary. During that time, he has also edited 'Konknni' the annual publication of the Mandal. He was a major participant in the movement and padayatra organized to collect funds for starting a Konkani daily in Roman script. As a result, Goans were fortunate to have NOVEM GOEM the Romi Konkani daily, published from Margao. Right from its inception, Dr. Rebello looked after it like his own child. He has worked behind the scenes and spent several hours and nights in the press. When some unprincipled dealings in the running of its affairs came to light, the culprits bolted. He then took its management and editorship on his own shoulders; he worked singlemindedly for its survival. Besides the above, he has contributed monetarily not only to this paper but also much else; Konkani literature owes him a debt of gratitude. Dr. F. M. Rebello expired suddenly on March 30, 1999. A. Carvalho 1936 - 2008 Anthony Carvalho, alias A. Carvalho from Quepem was a gifted Konkani writer. A seafarer by profession, he sailed the high seas for 35 long years and simultaneously made an enormous contribution to Konkani literature. His first sailing was in 1961 and during the course of that very assignment, he staged his tiatr 'Fottkirem Flory' on the liner M.S. Dunera at the Tibury Docks, London. His poems, short stories and articles have appeared on several Konkani dailies, weeklies and other periodicals. He published his very first book 'Goenchea Gopantlean' in 1977. He has brought out about 15 romances. He would publish at least one opus of his pen after every one or two voyages. 'Inspekttor James Bond', 'Sasnak Tujem', 'Aiz Mhaka Faleam Tuka', 'Gilbert ani Maria' etc. are some of his more celebrated romances. His last publication (in 2004) was 'The World of Birds' in English. It was originally written in Romi Konkani with the title Suknneancho Sonvsar and the same was serialized in Devanagari Konkani by the Konkani daily 'Sunaparant.' Speaking in the context of this book, the renowned Konkani author Prakash Thali referred to Carvalho as as our own version of the legendary Dr Salim Ali. In 1982, he published 'Fuddarache Khambe', a book which was focused on the younger generation. In 1984, he brought out Madd ani Tacho Upeog, an interesting and very useful book of just 20 pages but containing a lot of information and data on and about the coconut tree. His contribution to Konkani language is immense. He has functioned as a pillar of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Mumbai right from its inception until his death on December 11, 1986. As its General Secretary for many years, he has conducted all its affairs from his own home since the Mandal did not have an office of its own. For a very long time he was the only Catholic pillar of the Konkani movement in Mumbai. During his tenure as Secretary, and under his direction, Mando Utsav was organized in 1971 and Kunbi Utsav in 1973. He was the Chairman of the Reception Committee during the 13th All India Konkani Sammelan held in Mumbai in 1980 and worked indefatigably for its resounding success. Following his sad demise in 1986, the activities of KBM came to a stand-still. The Mandal was revived in 1992 by J. B. Moraes and the late G. M. B. Rodrigues with the assistance of Uday Bhembre; it continues to function till today. Martyres had researched all the Konkani publications from Mumbai and had compiled a lot of invaluable data thereon. The same was borrowed for reference by a Konkani literateur who later published it under his own name without the permission of Martyres. Martyres was deeply saddened by this incident. He had also collected a large number of Konkani books which, his family members inform, were donated to the University of Mumbai after his death. Fr. Caetano Lobo, sdb Fr. Caetano Lobo, sdb hailed from Colvale, Bardez. He was a saintly Salesian priest who has served the Konkani language for several years. While he was editor of the Konkani weekly 'Aitarachem Vachop' through this organ he promoted and encouraged many youngsters to write in Konkani, who later became celebrated Konkani writers. Besides contributing articles to Don Bosco's Madonna, Aitarachem Vachop, V. Ixtt etc., he also wrote for the The Goa Times weekly. His series of articles under the title Don Bosco-chi Maim ani Saibinn appeared there for a long time and was awaited avidly by its readers. Similarly he has brought out a booklet dedicated to the Devotion to Our Lady. One could rightly say that this entire Lobo family from Colvale was engaged in the service to Konkani language and the society in general. Belarmino Lobo, brother of Fr. Caetano, was a veteran Konkani author. He has considerable writing in Konkani to his credit, being a contributor to V.Ixtt and Aitarachem Vachop; similarly he has brought out a few Konkani publications. He has worked indefatigably to spread this love among the Konkani populace of Bombay. In the ten years between 1961 and 1971, he officiated as the editor of Udentichem Nokhetr when the official editor Fr. Marcelino Remedios (also from Saligao) was away in England. During this period, he also raised the sales and also the readership of the periodical. As a publisher, he has brought out several valuable Konkani books at his own cost. Alloysius Da Cruz who was born on May 4, 1909 in Rannoi ward, Aldona where he was popularly known as Anton. He studied for priesthood at the Rachol Seminary, and on being ordained he joined the Jesuit Society within 8 months. As a Jesuit priest, he worked in the Belgaum Province. Between 1950-55, he was the Principal of St. Paul's High School, Belgaum. Many Goans who had left Goa at the time of the Inquisition in the Sixteenth century are settled in the Belgaum Province. They spoke pure Konkani; their language was free from any Portuguese influence. Fr. Da Cruz visited the homes of such people and garnered chaste Konkani words. Using such words, he later composed hymns. Some of the hymns composed by him and included in Gayonancho Jhelo are 'Somia Jezu Ie Tum Ie', 'Prabhu Jezu', 'Suadik Tujem Nanv', 'Tum Ietai, Tum Ietai', 'Jezu Tujem Nanv', etc. Fr. Da Cruz left for his heavenly abode on July 26, 1991. Philip R Vaz Hailing from Assolna, Salcete, Philip R. Vaz studied at Mater Dei School, Saligao and later joined St. Xavier's College, Bombay. At the M.A. examination he earned the Gold Medal of the University of Bombay. He was always proud of the fact that he bagged the Gold medal after living and studying in the village club; very often he publicly alluded to this fact. He occupied high positions in several departments of the Government of Bombay ending his career as Joint Secretary in the Government of Maharashtra. In his free time, Vaz would write articles in Konkani. Through his regular column Zag Porjemodem in The Goa Times he would air the problems faced by the people. After him, the same column in The Goa Times was continued by Felix P. da Cruz alias Anand Kristdas. Vaz had two other famous Goans as classmates in St. Xavier's College: Cancer Specialist Dr. Ernest

The same year Prof. Armando functioned as the President of the Third Session of the All India Konkani Conference which was held first time in Bombay wherein Shenoy Goembab functioned as the Chairman of the Reception Committee. Prof. Menezes was the father of the noted writer George Menezes. He expired in Mumbai on 2nd June 1983. Valerian Cardinal Gracias (1900-1978) Hailing from Goa's Dramapur village in Salcete, Valerian Gracias was born at Karachi on October 23, 1900. He went on to become the first Indian Archbishop of Bombay on December 4, 1950; then on Jan. 12, 1953, he became the first Indian to be anointed Cardinal. He was awarded Padma Vibushan in 1966. The Goregaon Seminary, which celebrates it's golden jubilee this year, is one of his dreams that came to fruition. He has voluminous literature in English to his credit; he has also edited some periodicals. Cardinal Gracias Speaks and To Revive Old Memories are two of his well-known works. He was an accomplished orator and preacher. In order to hear his sermons, people would secure their seats even one hour in advance. Crowds would throng to his Three Hours' Agony on every Good Friday. His contribution to Konkani literature is immense. He had great love for his mother tongue. He would end his Good Friday sermon in English at Cross maidan with a 15 minutes long oration in Konkani. He would not only attend tiatrs but also encourage the artistes by personally meeting them. He once told C. Alvares that social and moral messages are conveyed to the people through tiatrs more easily than through priests' sermons. Cardinal Gracias had great affection for Dor Mhoineachi Rotti. In 1950-51, he brought the periodical and its editor, Fr. Elias D'Souza from Karachi to Bombay. But the Rotti could not be run officially with Fr. Elias as the editor because he was a Portuguese citizen. Therefore, Msgr. Orfino de Sa was named the de jure editor whereas the de facto editor continued to be Fr. Elias. He also encouraged Konkani-knowing seminarians to write for Rotti. Fr. Elias became very sick. He did recover from a grievous illness, but he did nor regain his original vigour. He was medically advised not to undertake onerous duties. Thus

[Goanet] Massive downpour of rain failed to dampen GRAF's 'World Konkani Day' celebration in Mumbai
Massive downpour of rain failed to dampen GRAF's 'World Konkani Day' celebration in Mumbai The World Konkani Day 2010 was commemorated by GRAF (Goan Review Art Foundation) on 29th August 2010 at Antonio D'Souza High School, Byculla, Mumbai. Renowned Konkani litterateur and winner of the Sahitya Academy award Mrs. Sheela Kolambkar speaking as the chief guest on the occasion highlighted the various development of the Konkani language and said that the five scripts of Konkani should unite the Konkanis as the five fingers of a fist to come together unitedly and work towards the progress of the language. She also made a mention of Fr. H O Mascarenhas who worked tirelessly to raise the standard of the language then, and complimented Shetgaonkar the young director of the Konkani film 'Poltoddcho Monis' for taking Konkani to greater heights internationally. Konkani activist and entrepreneur, Shri Lawrence D' Souza and President of the Federation of All Goan Clubs, Felix Dias were the guests of honour in the distinguished presence of Shri Gerson da Cunha of AGNI and Rev. Fr. Francis Ramesh, patron of Mandd Sobhann. President of GRAF Fausto V. da Costa in his introductory speech said that although it's 18 years since Konkani has been included in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution the progress of Konkani has been very slow because people are slowly moving away from Konkani. We tend to use the language commercially rather than making use of it in our day to day lives. In spite of this Konkani has been able to reach this level of success only because of the contribution of a few dedicated persons where as the general public is hardly bothered about this, he further lamented. He also advised the gathering that instead of getting rid of the clubs - the unique heritage of our ancestors - by selling them, we should explore ways of saving them for the generation next.. A minute silence was observed in honour of the doyen of Konkani literature late Ravindra Kelekar and other departed souls. Konkani writer and Tiatrist Mr Peter Vaz de Chandor and Social worker Jeetendra Lotliker were felicitated during the function for their yeoman service to the society and the Konkani language. The Goan Review's Man of the Year 2009-10 - Mr Roque Gonsalves was also honoured with the Goan Review Rolling trophy and a purse at the hands of the chief guest. Konkani Tiatr 'Vantte' written by Rio Rosa was the highlight of the day in the cultural programme that followed. The mando was nostalgic of Goa and so were the Portuguese dance by the children and the mando danced by the adults. Hymn to our patron St Francis Xavier brought the cultural programme to an end. There was not a single moment for the people to think of anything else but what next. In short the audience wanted some more if not for the rain gods playing the spoil sport and time running out. None the less the young and the old joined the dancing sessions. What can be Goan gathering without xacuti, sorpatel and pulao? The crowd enjoyed the mouth water treat till the end. Alfred de Tavares, Stockholm, 2010-06-21 Froilano: Any thoroughbred Goan will cringe at the vocals of the rendition. Ex. 1. It is 'Aga mojea Taria Mama but she sings as Aga Taria Taria Mama 2. It is 'Kolvontacho' . She pronounces it as 'Kolvontachu' 3. There is a great massacre on the chorus 'Shuimtim Mogrim' .. Mr. Jose Fernandes - you have shown what being a Goan is all about. Can you sing any better? If you are in Canada why don't you join hands with the singer. We need to applaud Jacinta for venturing to sing in Konkani and keeping our language alive. How were the accents of the song Claudia which was sung by a non-Goan? Can you do any better? Jacinta grew up in Africa and Canada and I am sure she is more multi-lingual than many of us. We Goans can be pathetic in our commenting process. Let us encourage everyone to keep our language - Konkani alive. Cr. Oscar C. Lobo. Melbourne Lino Dourado's comments on Jacinta's version of 'Hanv saiba poltodde vetam' are unfortunate. Jacinta has sung the song. This is her version of it and if you think that there should only be one version, you are not appreciating the diverse character of Music. I think that considering the fact that we Goans seem to be very reluctant in speaking our mother tongue and promoting the wider use of the language specially in homes should encourage ventures like Jacinta's. Non use and promotion of the language is leading to the demise of the language among the youth especially in migrant Goan communities throughout the world. This is a shame and unless we make concerted efforts in ensuring the wider use of the language, in these migrant communities, Konkani will soon disappear from these communities. This is unfortunate but it is one of the attributes which makes us Goan and should be promoted at every opportunity. Manuel (Eddie) Tavares.

When I mentioned to one such association that Goan identity is ...on a slippery slope..they said it was not in their interest/mandate. Understood, once you have a few drinks in you and having a good time, who cares about identify, WHAT? Ofcourse, now I understand what a lot of them stand for and the sometimes angry reaction on the GoaNet to overseas Goans. Least they could do is throw some small change towards Concani mangazinesbelieve it or not, our mai baas is most important to Goan identity. Sadly, one overseas Pau wrote privately (I think) to me saying Goans have two-wheelers these days and maybe someone should go door to door selling subscriptions (to the magazines). I say thank you for the great suggestion Senor Pau. He ofcourse, missed the point as do a lot of others *sigh*. On the other hand, Fausto should say something...suggest something. [Goanet] 'Paltadacho Munis'
If we are speaking about spelling or sound, pl. note the word 'Konkanni' (repeated 6 times) in the mail below is one such example as 'Paltadacho', a non-standardized word. It's sad that Konkani in the roman script is written in the manner one pleases and definitely needs to be standardized. Ami 'monis' kai 'munis'? vo muniso! Fausto floriano wrote: Devika, My dear, You don't know what you are talking about. I am protesting the word 'Paltadacho' because as according to me, in Konkanni context,? it tries to sell me? 'poltodcho' . If you don't know your konkanni, don't blame me. The title must be as good as the movie. I can accept 'P o l t o d c h o' but not 'paltadacho', because the Konkanni I grew with, has no word like paltadacho meaning poltodcho. If such a word does exist, then it is a bastardized version and anything bastardized will not work, at least with Konkanni. I have not said anything about not? accepting the movie, only that true Goans should boycot it until the name is sensibly changed or corrected. However, I shall want you to know that I have not yet seen the movie and shall eagerly see it as amd when to the name is announced as ' POLTODCHO MUNIS' btw KONKANNI IS DOWNSTREAM TODAY BECAUSE OF PSEUDO-GOANS? and PSEUDO KONKANNIs. And I am calling you 'one' because you have the cheek to open up your gob on this.??? B/rgds floriano goasuraj 9890470896?

Maricho ghov Dubai zoroitam dhantem, ghov Dubai Maricho ghov, hanga pott koxem mottem. 'Fott-fottem' also means moped or scooter. It's malleable or extendable like a chewing gum. I love it! Boyer on Sunday 19th. July 2009 at 4.00 p.m. at St. Sebastian Goan High School, Dabul, (Thakurdwar) Near Charni Road Station, Mumbai. The Konkani speaking people of Mumbai are today scattered in the far off suburbs of Mumbai, thus breaking their link with their fellow brethren. We have to find a solution to bring all the different Konkani people together in order to sustain our cultural ties and enrich our Konkani language. Mr. Lawrence D'Souza, Kamani, Hon. Secretary of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Mumbai, the mother association of all Konkani people of Mumbai, will share his views on this subject. The identity of the Goans in Mumbai is slowly dying. The heritage that was built by our ancestors in Mumbai - namely the Village clubs and other institutions are dwindling in numbers. Therefore, for this reason, we have already conducted one seminar - Goan Associations and the Goan Clubs in Mumbai - in order to alert the Goans. This one is a sequel to the seminar already held earlier. Some concerned Goans have taken steps to register the Goan clubs in Mumbai in order to preserve them for posterity. The secretary of this proposed Federation will throw light on the progress made so far in this regard . We are humbly calling upon all Goans to come and attend this seminar and discuss this matter and come forward to take remedial measures to safeguard our language, culture and the club and institution heritage. On this occasion we also pay our respect to our departed artiste M.Boyer who enriched the Konkani culture through his plays and songs. There is no fee to attend this Seminar however those interested to attend this seminar must register their names in advance. For Registration and other details kindly contact: Gable D'Souza (9820494439) or GRAF office (22630139). Fausto V. Da Costa President

[Goanet] Death of Boyer
Sorry for the delay in sending in this reply. The following posts remind me of the death of Dr. Simon C. Fernandes. In this context may I quote the then archbishop of Bombay, Cardinal Simon Pimenta officiating as the main celebrant during the funeral mass had made this statement: '...He had a flair for pen but did not use the right way. Fausto Frederick wrote: Eugene, In the first place, how does a dead man defend himself? Regardless of the truth or otherwise of your allegations (which is not the point really), we could go about making all kinds of allegations against anyone who has passed on. Who is to judge? Secondly, here is an artiste who has obviously played a crucial role in the cultural life of the Goan community over a considerable period of time. Should we remember him on the basis of such criteria? A single sentence scattered without discretion over a media that reaches a large number of readers could have a really negative impact. Thirdly, the man has only just passed away. Is it the appropriate time to rake up such issues now? Even having truth on your side (assuming it is) would be no excuse for insensitivity, I would feel. If the devil could quote the scriptures, let he who is blameless cast the first stone! FN Eugene wrote: On my post regarding Boyer, I received an email from someone telling me, Your remarks of the above stink or are you just being a typical Goan who cannot bear to see another Goan get some praise and acknowledgment. Could these comments be a personal grudge. My (Eugene) reply: Can you specify which comments of mine on Boyer stink? Do you mean my mention of Succorine? Do you know the politics in Konknni tiatr world as better as I do? Did you fail to read the praise I lavished on him? -- The same person replies again: The politics in Konkani tiatr world must be the same as the politics in Goa today. Anyway this was not the time to come out with your comments, there is a time and place for everything. --- What the person does not understand is what I written is NOT the same as delivering an eugoly. It is ethical not to mention the deceased bad points or wrongdoings in an eulogy. But when one is doing an assessment, especially from an independent point of view, unlike what Tomazinho Cardozo has written of his fellow tiatrist, it is fair to mention some of the negative points. However big an icon Boyer was, he was not above petty politics that continues to rule the tiatr world. I had respect for me but, at the same time, I also criticized his role in a play or his own play. Tomazinho says, But, the one tiatr which created history was Ekuch Rosto. It was penned by M Boyer and was based on communal harmony shared between the two major communities of Goa. I disagreed on the main point of the story. Inter-religious marriages between a Goan Catholic boy and a Goan Hindu girl and vice versa is not the ONLY solution. It is not the only road to preserving Goa's communal harmony. This is simplistic solution. I think Tomazinho also staged a play on Goan unity (I forget the name). It was granted exemption from the entertainment tax. I attended the tiatr in Vasco. Tomazinho too says, That M Boyer was a gifted performer was manifested by his ability to mesmerize audiences through his extempore composition of lyrics on stage. Fausto writes: Taka porot porot apoitat (encore) ten'na tedeach vellar ghoddun gavpachi taka kopxi asli. Fuddem porot porot apoilear magir to ek lhan 'speech'. When Fausto says kopxi I take it to mean ability. True, earlier in his career, Boyer would rattle off couple of lines extempore for an encore. He later composed additional verses as he knew that he was be recalled not once, twice but, at times, thrice. As Fausto rights mentions, Boyer would then plead with the audience not to call him back. Since Boyer sang new verses the audience made a habit to call him again and again. It set a trend. Calling a singer back once was, in my opinion, okay but when it went on for two or three times it became intolerable. However greatly talented Boyer was it is nay impossible to string perfectly-rhymed verses of at least four to six lines on-the-spot. And, mind you, not just one verse but, at least, two or three verses. Boyer himself admited in one of Bastani meetings that it was getting to be a nuisance. We you knew him well, joked about it. But none of us few tiatr reviewers wanted to let it be known out in public. Therefore, the myth was perpetuated. The book, 100 Years of Konkani Tiatr, compiled by Wilson Mazarello (Wilmix), and published under the auspices of the Directorate of Art Culture, mentions how his surname Augiar became Boyer. Boyer officially said that he took the name from the Hollywood actor Charles Boyer. Another version that made the rounds was that Boyer was called beiro (deaf) by his school mates. It was alleged that he was hard of hearing in one ear. So, from beiro to Boyer seemed a good

[Goanet] Goans worst racists?
Your views make a lot of sense Florianobab. But it's not only our politicians who are to be blamed but we the citizens are largely to be blamed for this state of affairs in Goa. In fact the migrants in Goa speak Konkani while Goans don't. And sometimes it is difficult to distinguish a goan from a non-goan. Hence Goenkaramno, Konknni uloi, Konknni vach, Konknni boroi, ani Konknnintleanuch Goenkarponn fuloi! Na zalear amchea Goeant ami kholas ani bhaile zindabad. Fausto Florian wrote: Some people say 'So what'? Mumbai is full of outsiders. But one must realise that Mumbai is not Maharashtra. One must go outside Mumbai to see that Maharashtra is Maharashtra. It is not the same with Goa. Goa is practically a 'one city' state. You allow Goa to be loaded without strict 'policies' to safe-guard Goan Identity, then Goa and Goans are surely lost forever. Bernado is very right. Ulla does not know what she is talking about. Or she is mixing issues. One must know what is racism in the first place. Will Sweden allow immigrants to do what they want and how they want?. Does the Swedish government survive on the immigrant's vote? These things have been happening in Goa to the detriment of Goa and Goans. Our Goan political class has become prostitutes, cultivating these migrant votebanks for their survival and in the bargain Goa is put on the death bed Goans need the migrants labour, and there is no doubt about that for Goa does not have the labour class any more. But that does not mean that migrants should be welcomed to integrate in the Goan society and willingly allowed to vote and choose the government in Goa for the Goans. Let Ulla go to any of the major towns and cities or the market places in Goa and try ask for directions in Konkani. Some people say 'So what'? Mumbai is full of outsiders. But one must realise that Mumbai is not Maharashtra. One must go outside Mumbai to see that Maharashtra is Maharashtra. It is not the same with Goa. Goa is practically a 'one city' state. You allow Goa to be loaded without strict 'policies' to safe-guard Goan Identity, then Goa and Goans are surely lost forever. What concerned Goans are protesting is that migrants should not get voting rights in GOA as easily as it is available today. Let them come to Goa to find work ( Goa is become the Dubai for the migrants) but not be allowed to become Goans overnight. floriano goasuraj 9890470896

[Goanet] Seminar on Goan Clubs Associations
Register the Clubs (Kudd) to save them for posterity MUMBAI: Goan Review Art Foundation (GRAF) in association with The Goan Review and Gulab organized a Konkani Seminar MUMBOINTLEO GOENKARANCHEO SONSTHA ANI GOENKARANCHE KUDD, on March 29, 2009 at St. Sebastian Goan High School, Hall, Dabul at 4.30 p.m. Mr. Fausto V. da Costa, President of GRAF set the seminar rolling. He spoke in brief about the Goans of yester years. He said Goans occupied many important positions in public life in Mumbai. But now the Goans are hardly to be heard of. There are many Goan associations in Mumbai but most are dormant. The conditions of the Goan clubs (Kudds) is no better. Out of the 240 odd clubs hardly 120 are now existing. He disclosed that he had received complaints from villagers (for the purpose of publishing in the periodicals) that some clubs were sold without proper intimation to the villagers and the booty distributed among existing members. He emphasized that no individual/s have the right to sell the clubs, as they belong to the village and not to any individuals. He gave a clarion call to all Goans to wake up from the slumber and do something Now if Goan heritage is to survive and if someone called a Goan is to be found on the streets of Mumbai. Mr. Rio Rosa spoke of the Goan associations in Mumbai. He said there were many Goan associations in the past but a few are surviving now. Even those which are surviving are in bad shape. Those running the associations run them just for the sake of running the association. They have no clue what the aims and objectives of the association are. Secondly those running some associations run it for the name sake. Such leaders should not be only interested in meeting their own objectives and cling to the post but work towards meeting the objectives of the association and do constructive work. If not they should make room for those who are competent and willing to take up the reins. Such is the condition of Goan associations in Mumbai today. Mr. Thomas Sequeira, Vice president of AICU who was the main speaker on the GOAN KUDD gave a brief background of his involvement in this movement to save the clubs of Mumbai. He has taken up this active work of the clubs for over a year now after learning of the state of the clubs and how the landlords are harassing the members to leave the premises by paying some compensations or sometimes just peanuts. Advocate David Joseph a social activist has advised the group the way forward. He has prepared all the details required in a form of booklet, which has been printed by David Co. free of cost and given to the clubs. The most important advice of Mr. Thomas is first to register the club with the charity commissioner. He says once registered the club is almost secure. With the help of advocate David Joseph all formalities required to be done are available at one place. Mr Felix Dias said it is all good that we can register the clubs and get going. His main message was unity. We need to help one another in achieving the objective of Registration of the clubs and protecting them from the landlords and land sharks. In the question answer session. Some members of the audience shared their experience of being harassed by the landlords and actions taken by them. The difficulty in maintaining the club due to lack of membership/resources. They also wanted to know what is being done about the centralization of the clubs in one building . The way forward: 1- Get all the Clubs Registered - so far about 50 odd clubs are registered. 2- All clubs to be contacted and advised course of action.. 3- Due publicity will be given in Mumbai and Goa. 4- Support will be sought from the church in Goa . Get the Archbishop of Goa to write to all churches in Goa for information and awareness. 5- All other development work will be done once the registration is done. 6- Funds to be raised through soft loan from Goa government. (Renato Pereira)

Hope this explanation will suffice. Fausto It is gratifying to note that at least one reader of GULAB (even if he is someone WRITING in English) is concerned about how Konkani words are written in the Roman script. GULAB is constrained to say this because when we ran a series of 20 articles on this topic with a view to standardize the contributions received from our own authors, we found that hardly anyone paid attention to our suggestions, and we continued to receive articles written in the same old individual styles; nobody bothered to tell us whether and where we were going wrong either, in spite of our invitation to do so. Consequently, our work of proof correction did not diminish; the resulting tedium leads to some errors remaining uncorrected however much we wish to avoid this. The present query involves (a) the use of Y, (b) the method used for nasalization and (c) the necessity of doubling some consonants. We had devoted a full article (no. 20) to explain our understanding of the use of Y. This letter is found in Konkani written up to the first decade of the twentieth century. (It is also found in Pai Tiatrist's play, Bhattkara staged in 1910 but published in about 1940.) It is not found in later Konkani works obviously because the letter was banished from the Portuguese language in 1911; Goan children who went to Portuguese school after 1911 did learn the name of this letter as Igrôz but did not know the sound it represents as they did not come across a single word containing this letter. (Some, in fact, wrongly assumed that Y has the same sound as Z.) In recent decades, the medium of instruction having shifted to English, our children know that Y represents sounds: a vowel sound I (ee as in 'only'), a diphthong sound AI (eye as in 'try'), a consonant sound YO (as in 'young', 'buyer'). Earlier, the consonant sound was represented in Konkani by IO or EO depending on the position. Considering the number of vowel sounds in Konkani, the Roman script vowels were really overworked, even without handling this consonant sound. Therefore, it was thought appropriate to utilize the hitherto idle Y for the consonant sound alone. But there was strong opposition to this move. This included some veteran writers who have produced meritorious literary and research works. Moreover, a majority of GULAB readers, we felt, did not have the good fortune of going to an English school. Hence we decided to introduce this change gradually. This is one of the reasons why some words are spelt differently in one and the same article or sentence. Uniform nasalization could have been accomplished by using the 'tilde' in every case. But two factors militate against this. (a) the additional moves required to be made on the keyboard every time a 'tilde-bearing' vowel is to be typed and (b) the ubiquity of nasal sounds in Konkani. Moreover, even the languages which have been using the Roman script for centuries make do with the nasal consonants M and N for the purpose of nasalization. Therefore, it was decided to use the 'tilde' (as well as other accents) only where absolutely necessary. Generally, M is used when the nasal vowel precedes a labial consonant (i.e. B, M, P) and N in all other cases. But M and N also function as consonants. Hence a provision had to be made in the event of a consonant M preceding a labial consonant, or a consonant N preceding one of the other consonants. This is accomplished by placing an apostrophe after the M/N as the case may be. Examples: gulam'ponn (slavery), kan'sul (temple), mon'xak (to man). When a final M follows a vowel it always nasalizes the vowel; thus all neutral plural nouns end with a nasal M: fulam, kellim. However, if such M is to be pronounced as a consonant, an apostrophe must follow it: molom' (unguent), salam' (salute), chondrim' (moon). Now, let us take the specific cases of Gõy / Goem, Gõykar / Goemkar. When we use the Konkani words for Goa and Goan we find a dichotomy. Some use a monosyllabic Gõy, others a disyllabic Go-em. Similarly for Goan we use a disyllabic Gõy-kar or a tri-syllabic Go-em-kar. The latter versions arise, we feel, as a result of literally reading Goem and Goenkar in Roman script (in Devanagari the words are uniformly Gõy and Gõykar.) We therefore

But then, if Mr. Alemao is really serious about protecting Goa's Identity, then I request him to fight against other critical issues, which are seriously destroying Goa's Identity. For instance, Large Scale land sales to non-goans mega-projects favouring outsider, not only brings in un-necessary migrant work force but also brings in majority non-goan settlers. Surely if the latter is not stopped or restricted, we Goans will soon be a minority in Goa; I hope we all appreciate that Romi Konkani will not be relevant, if Goa ends up with a Non-Goan majority!!

If a leading Konkani in Roman-script magazine is confused on the usage of the word, then it is not a good sign. I have also noticed that our native language is spelled Konknni ifrom the earlier Konkani. Probably both spellings are acceptable, but I would like to know which one of the two is widely used. Dears Let me clarify: It's not Prof. S. M. Borges but I who have been adding the prefix 'Prof.' before his name in Gulab Goan Review. I also address him as 'Prosorbab' any objection? Isn't it my prerogative to give prominence whomsover I wish to in Gulab or the Goan Review? Although I can forcefully counter many other bigot views expressed in this mail, I refrain from doing as I do not have time to waste after such foolish issues. We have to accept we are living in stupid times and dealing with bigot minds. One can give one's opinion, but need not force his/her opinion on others in a frustrated manner stooping very low and indulging in mudslinging and character assasinating. Pratap Naik, though sketchy, is fairly truthful. hide the fact that not a single Konkani book in Roman script was printed between 1660 and 1890 any where in the world? And also that no Konkani book was printed in Goa even between 1890 and 1928?I hereby challenge Fr.Pratap Naik to prove me wrong on this count; and this is not the first time I am throwing this challenge. Fr. Naik also exploded his own pet myth: that Devanagari script is of the Hindus whilst Roman script is of the Roman Catholics. He now proves what I have been consistently stressing; that when it comes to using Devanagari for writing / teaching Konkani, it is Catholic Goans who have led the way and the Hindus, including Saraswats, followed much later. To the evidence adduced by Fr. Naik, one could add the following: in 1926, Francisco Pedro Borges wrote a Konkani (Devanagari) religious book of 198 pages entitled Kristanv Bhavartheacho dispott'tto sangati; this was printed in Khanapur. At the threshold of the twentieth century, a matriculate (equivalent to XI passed) Shenoy Goembab, in his twenties/thirties, published some Konkani translations in Roman script. And this is held against him. Some ignoramuses also think that this is a revelation, little realizing that the info is found in my translation of Shenoy Goembab's biography. I would be very happy to receive clarifications on the above points. Sotachench Zoit Zatolem. [Goanet] World Konkani Day 2008
GRAF Celebrates 'World Konkani Day 2008' in Spectacular Style By Ancy Paladka The Goan Review Art Foundation (GRAF) celebrated 'World Konkani Day 2008' in the metro at the Goan Institute Hall, Thakurdwar, Dabul, on Saturday, August 23. GRAF is the cultural body of the Konkani-English bi-monthly 'The Goan Review', whose editor and publisher is the renowned Goan Konkani writer Fausto V Da Costa. This celebration commemorated the inclusion of Konkani in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution on 20th August, 1992. This day is popularly known as 'Konkani Maneotaye Dis,' along the Konkan belt. The programme started with 'Sobit Amchem Goem', a dance-song conducted by Agnes Fernandes. Renowned Goan classical musician Milind Raikar was the chief guest while Konkani litterateur J B Moraes was the guest of honour. Konkani journalist Navin Kulshekar and tiatrist Nevis Oliveira were honoured on the occasion for their contribution to Konkani literature and tiatr. Renato Pereira Patron member of GRAF and Alex Silveira, President, Goan Institute were also present on the dais. GRAF's president Fausto V Da Costa gave an emotional call to all Konkani people to respect their mother tongue and to use it while talking, reading, and writing. 'Konkani has achieved great heights these days and it has brought in top honours; but it simply doesn't matter to Konkani people who are not proud of their language. They query about the benefits they stand to gain from Konkani. Only people who benefit financially from Konkani and people who can make an issue out of it to further their political career use and misuse Konkani, stated Fausto. He further added that the Konkani people in Mumbai, decades ago, were responsible for promoting Konkani movements, tiatr, and Konkani periodicals. He credited these Mumbaikars for Goa remaining a separate state with Konkani as its language, since they contributed abundantly to Goa's opinion poll. Fausto lamented the fact that today it becomes difficult to find a pure Goans in Goa. He cautioned that forgetting one's language was equal to losing one's identity. J B Moraes beautifully explained 15 milestones of Konkani as follows: 1. 'Zagor' and 'Tiatr', 2. 'Kudd' of Mumbai, 3. Konkani periodicals, 4. Work of Shennoy Goem Bab, 5. Konkani Parishad, 6. Konkani Bhasha Mandal of Mumbai established in 1942, 7. Konkani radio progarmmes 8. First Konkani novel 'Anjel', 9. Opinion poll in Goa, 10. Sahitya Akademi's recognition for Konkani as an independent language, 11. Konkani becoming the state language of Goa, 12. Konkani entering the eigth schedule of our constitution, 13. First Vishwa Konkani Sammelan, 14. Kalangan of 'Mandd Sobhan', and Vishwa Konkani Bhavan, 15. Konkani singing entering the book of Guinness records. Between these milestones there are thousands of furlongs which are not listed here, he said. Renato Pereira welcomed the gathering and proposed the vote of thanks. Octaviano Fernandes, Secretary, GRAF, introduced the honourable guests, while GRAF's chairman Gable D'Souza compered the programme. Milind Raikar, Yadnis Raikar, Beni Alfy D'Souza, and John Cardozo, gave violin and guitar presentations. Neves Oliveira rendered a melodious song giving a clarion call to Goans to safeguard their land and property, while 'mando-dulpods' highlighting the rich Goan traditional culture, presented by GRAF members under Renato Pereira was one of the highlights of the evening.

Re: [Goanet] Filomena Braz
Details of Filomena Braz are available on my book 'Tiatr Ani Tiatrist'. No she lives in Goa (not Mumbai). A very natural and versatile actress singer. Performed stellar roles in Prem Kumar's tiatr. Her husband Barnabe too has acted in a few tiatr in sall roles. Her sister Celine has also performed in a couple of tiatr. Fausto Joe wrote: I know Filomena is one of the senior tiatrists (residing in Bombay) but don?t remember seeing her on stage. Would appreciate if any one write a few lines on Filomena Braz, I like to know more about her, It seems all the songs in the VCD are previously sung or composed by the senior tiatrists dead or alive. Kenny has briefly talked about them like Mr. Lawrence de Tiracol, C Alvares, Gabru (?), Prem Kumar, Master Vaz (?), Wilson etc ?Utor Mogachem? by Prem Kumar was beautifully sung (actors Kenny Kiran). Actors, Songs, Music, Videography etc deserve full marks The newly released VCD is available all over Goa (and Bombay, Amboli Andheri (W) Contact 9820571238) Please buy the original and support Kokani Thank you.

Hi Eugene, It's Selma D'Silva of Dabul not D'Cunha. Fausto Eugene wrote: I wanted to cross-check on some Goan players who represented India. I knew all the names of Goans till 1980, the time women's hockey was introduced in the Olympics, but have forgotten them. Yes, Margaret Toscano, of the famous Tosa's restaurant in Mumbai, was the goalkeeper. Selma D'Cunha from Dabul and Fiona Albuquerque were in the team. I am not sure if Eliza Nelson was a Goan. I know she was from Pune. The best bet is to contact the All-India Women's Hockey Association. There were a few Goa-based Goans who played for India. Eugene

Fausto S M Borges wrote:- Dear friends, On Sunday, 18/11/07, at the invitation of the Convenor, I attended the ?Workshop? conducted by KBM about which Miguel raised such a ruckus. As I had expected, there was no session on Orthography. The three sessions involved writing of (a) poetry, (b) story, and (c) essay. But, instead of a ?workshop? it turned to be a ?seminar?. This was because the ?budding writers,? for whom it was meant to be, played truant leaving the ?veterans? who were to be the ?resource persons? to discuss the finer points of the different genres. We were informed by the Convener (editor of JIVIT) that he had contacted about 80 Konkani writers in Roman script (mostly contributors to his magazine) by phone or e-mail, and about 40 of them had confirmed their attendance. But at the last moment they were dissuaded by the publisher of JIVIT, who promised them that he would organize a better workshop for them next Sunday, i.e. on the 25th. Consequently, only about 15 of them 40 turned up, most of whom were the resource persons and established writers. A few came in response to the press release. Those who attended include poets Yusuf Sheikh (main speaker), Ashok Chodankar, Cyril Fernandes, Guadalupe Dias, story writers Prakash Porienkar, Maya Kharangate, Marcos Gonsalves, Vincy Quadros, essay writers Romeo Almeida (main speaker), John Gomes Kokoy, Jose Salvador Fernandes, Eliton Fernandes... Since it was not a workshop, no script was used at all. The speakers referred to their notes; but there was no way of knowing the script in which they were written. The participants in the audience took down notes in any script which convenient to each of them. In the end, all I can say is that the budding writers in Konkani (Roman script) were cheated of an exposure to experienced writers by a dada who specializes in cheating; they would not lose anything, but would have really gained, by attending two workshops on two consecutive Sundays.
