The inaugural opening ceremony of the Goa Toronto community centre I am sure
was watched by many Goans around the world and brought a tear or two of joy to
see such a great achievement in flying the flag for Goa in Canada.

Congratulations to all those involved in making this 50 year old dream come
true.

With technology, we were delighted to join you live in spirit.

7 Oct, 11:50 pm IST: NDTV. Indians who are fully vaccinated with Covishield or

Playing Football for St Josephs Boys Home Calangute Finals –Penalty Shootout

Sunday 15 August 2021 England was known as Freedom Day as all the uncertainty
of Covid19 restrictions were lifted enabling freedom for all of us locked in
for over a year and half to get back to normal life as near as possible
especially to meet, greet and socialise.

Dylan Pereira and his friend Andrew Fernandes, now in their mid-twenties,
organised within a short time a full house family friendly five a side
Football Tournament with the aim to help needy children in Goa who cannot
afford a decent pair of trainers or football shoes to play the beautiful game.
Dylan remembered his annual holidays to Calangute, Goa during his younger
school days where he played football with the orphans and boarders of
St.Josephs Home/School at their playing grounds, most of them who played bare
foot on the very hot and hard grounds peppered with small stones while he
turned up in his full football kit. Despite this, the young boys played with
much passion and skills which left a lasting impression on him and filled him
with admiration. Hence it was decided that the proceeds from the tournament
should be donated towards the purchase of football shoes for the needy boys at
St. Josephs Home and School.

UK :Sunday 15 August 2021 Playing Football for St Josephs Boys Home Calangute
Bardez Goa.

Sunday 15 August 2021 is an important day, it’s the 75th Anniversary of India
Independence, in Cortalim Goa 2nd Arvale Road is renamed “Rua Miguel Rod” in
memory of the very famous and talented son of Cortalim, also in England known
as Freedom Day as all the uncertainty of Covid19 restrictions were lifted
enabling freedom for all of us locked in for over a year and half to get back
to normal life as near as possible especially to meet, greet and socialise.

Dylan Pereira and his friend Andrew Fernandes, now in their mid-twenties,
organised within a short time a full house family friendly five a side
Football Tournament with the aim to help needy children in Goa who cannot
afford a decent pair of trainers or football shoes to play the beautiful game.

turned up in his full football kit. Despite this, the young boys played with
much passion and skills which left a lasting impression on him and filled him
with admiration. Hence it was decided that the proceeds from the tournament
should be donated towards the purchase of football shoes for the needy boys at
St. Josephs Home and School.

The venue with a big G sign Goals at Elm Park could not be more apt with its
Astroturf pitches Clubhouse and facilities could also stand for Goan, blink and
you could miss Goans playing Football.

Within a very short time of informing their friends and mainly by word of
mouth, they very soon filled up the 10 Team places. Due to a continued interest
from more teams, they later increased it to 12 Teams and still had to turn some
teams away. They have teams entered from the north, south, east and west of
London which is indeed a great achievement on its own.

The teams that managed to register on time

Group A: Dream Team, Goan Ballers. TNT, Goan Chaplaincy, Southside Shooters,
The Mighty Eagles.

Group B: Cabana Gringos, Sporting Goa, Cortalim Union, SLG, Bayern Bru, LIZARB.

Goa Football Association conducts training to candidates, players and referees
too.

Whereas FC Goa conducts coaching classes followed by tournaments for boys and
girls, from 6yrs to 12yrs old, they get the full kit shoes, socks, shinguards,
uniform everything. Water, snacks, medicine, Doctors present during coaching
and tournaments too.

FC Goa really give the children beautiful trophys, flags banners music making
playing enjoyable.

However children are only given shoes, socks that fall down, standard size
uniform one size fits all you either fit tight or loose in it.

So why not take this opportunity to assist Dylan and Andrew in their effort for
St Josephs Calangute. Our cashless society means little or no change in wallet
for donations most payments are now made by credit, debit or contactless if
you can assist with a donation by Bank Transfer please contact Andrew
07456607498 or Dylan 07448448939 after Monday or as soon as possible. Report
on this thriller tournament to follow.

GOA Public Information from Archdiocese of Goa and Daman

There is a message going round that the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman is seeking
funds for the recently established COVID Care Centre at Old Goa. We have not
made any appeal to anyone, including to the Government, for any funds at this
point of time.
The COVID Care Centre is an initiative of the Archbishop being taken forward
with the funds of the Archdiocese, as a modest contribution of the latter in
the mitigation of the present crisis created by the pandemic. The COVID Care

[Goanet] Goa Death by Neglect and Individual Responsibility

2021-05-16 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
Goa Death by Neglect and Individual Responsibility

Today 15 May 2021 News reports announce thirty two thousand live positive Covid
cases and two thousand who died RIP.

All around the world, Goa State is no exception, when the Truth is shielded by
a Bodyguard of lies, lies of delusion.

Let us rewind to February Carnival. Goa Government, despite its best efforts
to get the population to follow Covid appropriate behaviour, failed to do so.
Covid appropriate behaviour included:

1. Wash your hands properly with soap frequently
2. Social Distancing
3. Wearing Masks in public places
4. Only leaving home when absolutely necessary for example food shopping

Perhaps the reasons were not made clear enough. Goa is a civilised state you
could not expect the police to enforce the rules with a Lathe Charge .

This is what actually happened, our fellow Goykars carried on with their
Birthday Parties, Weddings, Zatras, Shigmo, Fest, etc as though it was their
last day on earth.

Like others, I feel the pain that Goa is 51 per cent Covid Positive, that is
one in every two people and the landscape populated with our people following
our culture and traditions will be wearing Black for a while among other
customs.

I feel the pain of the large shark that beached itself on Baga beach had its
fins hacked of by persons unknown so it could not swim back to sea gasping for
oxygen its dead carcass was moved next day no one knows anything.

I have observed how natural Oxygen producing trees have been felled like the
over two hundred year old clump of mango trees that was a gateway and landmark
of Colvale, Mopa Airport Project Mollem. Open cast mining, road and building
activities, all these are a blot on the landscape on the lush green canopy
covering and sheltering the inhabitants of Goa.

The next generation looks to you to replace these natural oxygen producing
trees that God has given for free. Please Call Andrez Diaz 8390835087 for a
list of trees and Ideas. Suggest to Goa Government that land be set aside for
trees to be grown in memory of those who succumbed and survived to Covid.
Families can also plant a tree in their property. Check with Sarpanch for a
communal area with planning permission also fellow Goans who died and those who
survived abroad can have trees planted in their memory.

About Our Goan Associations and Cortalim Union (UK)

Years ago, a number of Goan expats in the UK formed village communities (as
associations) to maintain their culture and support projects back in Goa. Once
a year the villagers of these associations got together to celebrate their
annual Goan village Church feast in the UK.

The celebrations provided the perfect occasion to meet one another, maintain
friendships and for a small fee or raffle allowed funds to be raised to support
the upkeep, renovation of Churches and Schools, and contributions made towards
the wellbeing of different needs in Goa.

Cortalim Union (UK), was formed in 1978. This year we are celebrating 43 years
of existence on the feast day of our village church - St Philip & St James, on
Sunday, 2 May 2021. While we cannot hold a social at a venue this year due to
the Covid pandemic and lockdown restrictions, ironically a new door has been
opened for us. To this end we are extending the invite to any Goan to join us
in celebrating our feast - wherever they may be and from the comfort of their
own homes.

Kindly request the flyer for details of our feast celebrations via email
(cortalimunio...@gmail.com mailto:cortalimunio...@gmail.com ) or WhatsApp (+44
7739 87 6718). We will also be hosting a Cake / Dessert dressing competition, a
Raffle and a Family Game. Entry to the event is free of charge, and needless to
say, you have to bring your own food and drinks with the best catering in town
– your Kitchen. Music by Outbreak.

We will be most grateful if you could consider making a donation - this is
entirely optional, the amounts are discretionary and payments can be made
before, during or after the event (details will be provided on registration).
Thank you.

Goa Pot Holes Bonanza reaches Specular Levels

News feeds in the last three years indicate that Pot Holes in Goa has reached
Specular Levels. Only last week the Goa Government announced funding for
Employment of Engineers (Performance not Guaranteed) Perhaps this is an
opportunity for POGO to seek funding and supply the PWD with a Goan Workforce
as most migrants have gone back to their home states. Contact Government Of Goa
information office and ask your MlA to assist. For Professional Advice seek
Navy Assistance based at Dabolim.

The Jackfruit is in season so is the Cashew Apple an indication that the Annual
Wash down of Goa with the Monsoon Rain is round the corner. Goa has moved from
the Age of the Bullock Cart to the Jet Age. In days gone our Ancestors
being a migratory race without Travel Insurance waited to catch the Trade
Winds to sail to Africa and the unknown. Today Jets with connecting flights
bring their descendants loyal to Mother Goa to Dabolim where the Runway has to
be hundred per cent pothole free, we cannot risk self-accidents as happen on
Goa Roads.

Action is needed yesterday as the Monsoon Rain will fill these Potholes.
Accidents are caused and can be prevented.

be finalized without examining suggestions submitted by 105 village panchayats

It is good to know that the voice of every concerned Goan is now being heard.

District Level Public Consultation of Draft Coastal Zone Management Plan 2011
For North Goa, Held on 7th March 2021 at Kala Academy Panaji Goa

I trust you received by e mail my letter dated 2 March with my onjections to

Bhavan Margao. I would appreciate an acknowledgement for quick reference I am
copying this letter to your office again for consideration also request you
please send a copy straight away to Mr Ajit Roy IAS District Magistrate and
Collector for North Goa and Ms Ruchika Kaytal IAS Collector and District
Majistrate South Goa. I am sorry if I got the Names wrong all Goa government
emails are incorrect wring and keep bouncing back also needs attention by your
IT people.

Please also forward to your expert members that make up your secretariat
straight away.

Whilst I have a concern about Public administration in Goa State I must
congratulate your or rice for the prompt production of the minutes of the
meeting in North Goa. I have not had sight of South Goa Minutes However news
feeds indicate the sentiments are the same.

It appears that the Coastal plans were drawn up with a Picasso School of
thought and despite objections raised at local Panchayats level was bulldozed
through to be rubber stamped at the meetings of 7 March 2921.

People with a lucky ticket or the chosen ones were allowed into the hall while
the vast majority of the Public had to stay outside with Police lines as
barriers to the Public Meeting . Those In the hall could not speak within the
time frame given and did not speak.

Is Environmental Minister Nilesh Cabral Technically Qualified to rectify errors
in CZMP. If the baby(people of Goa) doesn’t cry the mother (Government)would
not know something is wrong and look the other way while the state is
systematically destroyed

There are plenty of examples. The Chopping 200 year old clump of Mango trees
that was the gateway to Colvale despite motorised vehicles having steering
wheels to steer around them, felling of trees for Mopa Airpot, Double Tracking
now this Coastal Plan Stop Now Please Stop.

This is complete abuse of authority misuse instruments of the Law and calling
it Democracy.

The Minutes indicated that the meeting was concluded with a vote of thanks
there was no indication as to what decision was taken can your office clarify.

Goa is Good let’s make it Beautiful again.

Dear Sir.

Issue:

Register and Table my Objection at the Public Hearings on 7th March 2021 for
the draft finalizatiom Coastal Zone Management Plan (as per Notification 2011)
Errors in the CZMP 2021 for St Jacinto Island.

1 . North GOA Telelgao Community Hall

(10.00 to 7pm)

1. South GOA Ravindra Bhavan Margao

Background

St Jacinto Island has had ‘Special Status’ for years.

Even Goans from outside the Island are not allowed to buy property, no houses
are let out either, many houses are in ruins but yet no one sells.

There is a written document which is kept with the church authority.

I am concerned and distressed that representations made by the Village have not
been addressed and are systematically ignored.

The Villagers of the Island of St. Jacinto Goa are under the jurisdiction of
the village Panchayat of Chicalim, and have to repeatedly bring the same point
again and again to the notice of your office.

Our villagers had participated in a gram sabha called by the Village Panchayat
on 25 August 2019 for discussing the CZMP Plan prepared by the Villagers in
association with Chicalim village Biodiversity Management Committee, Mundkars,
Oyster pickers, Clam pickers, Village elders and others.

Conclusion: It is shocking therefore that on scrutiny of the recently
received draconian draft CZMP 2021 that has been published we find that it has
not been rectified/corrected and it still reveals glaring anomalies. This is
with respect to the draft Coastal Zone Management Plan 2021 prepared in
accordance with 2021 that has been put up in the village Panchayat of Chicalim
and published on the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority for scrutiny and
examination by the villagers.

1..The plan shows the entire coast of river Zuari along the village of Chicalim
as under the port limits of Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) Owned by the Government
of India.

2.The entire Island of Sao Jacinto has been shown as under the Port limits of
MPT.

3.The presence of the endangered species of Window pane Oysters around the
tiny Vareg Island has not been highlighted.

4.The presence of various varieties of Clams (Tisreos) at the Chicalim Bay near
Sao Jacinto Island, as well as Vareg Island, have not been highlighted. It is
shocking therefore that on scrutiny of the recently received draft CZMP 2021
that has been published we find that it has not been rectified/corrected and it
still reveals glaring anomalies,

5.The plan shows the entire coast of river Zuari along the village of Chicalim
as under the port limits of MPT.

1. The Heritage structures like the Chapel dating back 1731, the Church, a
Tunnel on the hill, etc., have not been shown in the map.

In view of the above, we demand that this office include the points highlighted
above in the CZMP 2021 and prepared in accordance with CRZ 2021 prior to the
Plan.

They should forth right and review the whole situation along with the members
of Government. Of Goa.

Yours Sincerely,

Melvyn Fernandes

[Goanet] Factors leading to mass migration of Goans to the UK? Response to Gaby Menezes by Melvyn Fernandes

2021-01-06 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES

Thank you Gabe for sharing the Heraldo Article

Factors leading to mass migration of Goans to the UK?

May I add to the splendid essay in Heraldo Sunday 3 January on Factors leading
to Mass Migration of Goans I have to agree with the honesty of the last
paragraph “ Now, the well-informed Goan would have to think harder and reason
out a little more comprehensively before choosing to surrender his Indian
citizenship in exchange for a Portuguese passport, given that the UK is no
longer a part of the EU. “

Money Speaks

It is tearful to observe the migration of our people in recent years leave
their Villas in the Sun and Ration Cards to live in shared rented
accommodation as second class citizens in England. Over a hundred years ago, my
grandparents went to East Africa on Portuguese Travel Documents. It was a time
when Crab Mentality saved lives. Let me explain when our Portuguese Educated
People Oiled the Colonial Administrative system in East Africa our Indian
Cousins were quite happy in their own community opening up shops and trading in
towns. The Goans on the other hand for an extra rupee were happy to venture
into the jungle where others preferred not to for fear of disease and being
eaten by wild animals or even attacked by natives. The Crab Mentality must
have saved many lives as very few funerals were recorded. Statistics are
important, perhaps the NRI office of Goa State can give us a figure of deceased
fellow Goans brought back to Goa for Burial from the United Kingdom with or
without the assistance of the 6 Trustees of Goan Welfare Society UK who have
spent GBP 104,627 of donated money in the last five years. Goan Welfare
Society UK based in Cranford and can be found on the website of GOAUK.COM.

Mother Goa has always welcomed her children and grandchildren back, the
Government of India through the OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) gives a
facility for everyone to connect with their ancestral land however on arrival
most talk of being ripped off never to return again that’s another story.
There is a big wide world to go to.

May I draw your attention to the following observations on a Webinar Goans in
Britain Part of South Asian Heritage Month.. Your comments will be most welcome.

In his opening address, Ravi Vaz (from minute 3.34) spoke of “food parcels to
600 families in the UK” and Suella Braverman (minute 7.13) thanked Ravi and his
team for the “6,000 food parcels through volunteer’s effort”. These two
unverified statements clearly indicate that with the current coronavirus
pandemic, at least for some families that have come from Goa or other parts of
the world and made UK their home, the dream is fast turning into the sad
reality of “Breadline Britain”.

Dr Stella Mascarenhas-Keyes outlined two reasons for the 21st century migration
of Goans, through the Portuguese passport, to Britain. Firstly, the opening
of the border between Goa and the rest of India resulting in free movement of
labour causing a “competition for jobs” in Goa. Secondly, the local Goan
observing the spending power by visitors coming from abroad, a visual sign that
people who have ventured abroad had made and were making it “big”. However, I
find this quite the reverse speaking to my circle of friends, the 21st century
Goan migration also consists of Catholic Goans who have left well paid and
secure jobs in Goa coupled with a wonderful lifestyle, and headed for the UK.
In fact, just the other day, one of our friends announced that he was leaving
his big “villa in the sun” in Goa and heading to the UK where, I assured him,
there was no hope at all of him having an equivalent lifestyle here and
definitely not the same sized property! At best, one room in a shared house.
So are the real reasons for Goans coming to the UK more complex, are they
multiple faceted, do we have to dig deeper for the truth and is there any hope
of finding it?

Turning to the “competition for jobs” did those who migrated to the UK really
think there was no local competition in the UK for jobs? Or were they
prepared to do jobs no one wanted to do in the UK?

The coronavirus pandemic has certainly put things in perspective in UK and Goa.
Fast forward to August 2020 in Goa Today for the life of cross border
migrants captured in a short film “Trapped in Paradise” These people came to
fill the void left by the 21st Century Catholic Goans, click link below:

UK: Zoom Webinar Goans in Britain Part of South Asian Heritage Month

18 August 2020 – Observations by Rose Fernandes

Fast forward to August 2020 in Goa Today for the life of cross border
migrants captured in a short film “Trapped in Paradise” These people came to
fill the void left by the 21st Century Catholic Goans, click link below:

https://shorted.in/short-films/trapped-in-paradise-goa-coronavirus

As a 20th Century Goan, when I first came into this country there was an
advertisement “Happiness is a Cigar called Hamlet”. My observations of 21st
Century Goans are that they are no longer content with their previous lifestyle
of rice, curry and fish. Instead “Happiness is a watch called Rolex” or
“Happiness is a car called Rolls Royce”, while some people are still dreaming
of their first second hand Mercedes Benz parked outside. Status is more
important in Goa than in the UK hence the need to acquire and “flash their
cash” by any means possible.

Revised Goan Chefs on British Television - Bake off Finals 2020

To create a banquet fit for a King and Queen and feed 80 people with stopclock
pressure.

Are you a pastry chef, chocolatier or patisserie chef by trade, and want to
test your skills against the very best in the business? Apply now to Channel 4
British Television Bake Off the Professionals or forever hold your peace.
Clanny Rodrigues from Ponda and Ryan Pinheiro from Louitalim in Goa State in
India did just that representing the Ivy, a very high end five star Gold award
restaurant, with many celebrities as patrons in London, England. The
restaurant serves British and International dishes.

After nine gruelling episodes, Clanny and Ryan, on Tuesday 28 July 2020, centre
staged Cuisine from Goa, a little dot on the map to a worldwide audience, as
they were tasked with creating a banquet fit for a King and Queen and enough
for 80 people. The pressure was on them, with their theme “ a day in the
countryside”. Theit final presentation was a Goan Boater style beach hat with
intricate Raffia style design woven in chocolate complete with a hatpin made
up of what looked like a display of lily and lialac. The sweet was Pyramid
shaped bite size portions of Bebinca garnished with Cashew and Cinnamon Barfi
sitting on Jelabi. The centrepiece was a peacock, the National Bird of India.

We all 2.75 million viewers on multiple screen viewing platforms such as
television computers and smartphones in UK and around the world missed a
heartbeat along with Covid 19 survivor Matilda Sequeira when disaster struck in
the final minutes capturing the moment the centre piece sugar coated wing of
the peacock fell off. Said it gave her memories of her younger days.

Viewers also noticed Ryan’s perfect pyramid shaped bebinca it was good to hear

[Goanet] IN APPRECIATION - GOAN INSTITUTE NAIROBI 115th ANNIVERSARY

2020-07-26 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
 to
turn your dreams into a career”.

Looking to the future, “taking care of the environment” was being progressed
through a programme of recycling, security was being stepped up and sponsorship
and mentoring to connect with the youth was being developed.

The last line of the video brought the all important message our community
around the world can aspire to “it is important we stay together”.

When I arrived in the UK in December 1974, we did see the importance of staying
together and much of what was achieved by the Nairobi Institute was being
replicated here.Sadly on 21 September 1998 I got a telephone call at
2.00am in the morning from the late Norton Antao saying that our Clubhouse at
Ravensbourne in Kent was on fire, I replied good and hoped that the evil
buzzing around it burnt with it . The building burnt to cinders however the
evil survived and is still with us today. We are thankful that the then
President Mr Cecil Pereira who came face to face with the muzunju arsonists was
not injured. This was the start when the ethos and ideals of the East African
Goan was eroded . Today in 2020, twenty years after the millennium, we are
still homeless with our young people not knowing whether they are coming or
going. In my opinion, today nothing of this is left, progress to keep the
community together has ground to a halt, most of the disorganised functions by
Goan Association UK are poorly attended and have been running at a loss over
the last ten years, even the Intellectual property, the Logo, was defaced at
the 50th Anniversary in 2016.

I am thankful for the presence of the remaining properly run Goan and Village
Organisations when celebrating their feast and events which give our people of
all generations the opportunity to Pray together, meet and greet, dine and
dance to our musicians playing. This is the only glimmer of hope we have of
keeping the next generation “together”.

On 29 October 2011, a training session was held at the Indian YMCA in London
to video the oral history of East African Goans. This Project was funded by
the National Lottery with a grant to the G.O.A. UK. In my opinion, the final
product painted a distorted picture of our life in East Africa (by people who
never lived there). The GI Nairobi 115 Anniversary video is spot on and puts
a right “spotlight” on how things were so, once again, thanks for sharing.

Former Tanzania Resident Lui Godinho informs the Dar es Salaam Goan Institute
celebrated its 100 Anniversary, the building in the then German East African
Colony was designed by the late Architect Tony Almeida with a floating dance
floor amongst its many features, A documentary in Portuguese is being
commissioned by RTP Lisbon. Well done and thank you to our creative and
enterprising people in East Africa.

Goa has always welcomed its Children and Grand Children Home sadly its great
grandchildren cannot wait to leave.

Even before the millennium twenty years ago the grass suddenly became greener
in different Goan settlements in most parts of the world making it desirable
for our younger people to leave the soil of Goa to seek their fortune leaving a
void authentic food being one of them.

Goa has in its own unique tradition has the best food in the world garnished

settlements of Vancover and Nairobi Arusha Southall Swindon have private
caterers of Goan Cusine.Apologies to those I have missed out let us know on
Goanet before World Goa Day August 19/20 so that we can all celebrate our
Heritage. Goanet reaches our people in parts of the world that others do not
reach.

Folks returning to Goa should be embraced and assimilated not rehabilitees as
announced by the NRI Office. Most will have skills never utilised by the super
clever in Goa. Seafarers sailing the seven seas have been ambassadors for Goa
centre staging Goan Cosine along with other International dishes enjoyed by a
Global multicultural audience of three to four thousand people at a time on
cruise liners who someday may come to Goa for the experience. Welcome and come
again.

True there are many places in the world that can be more economical cleaner and
pleasant to visit. Goa has everything from the harvest of the sea and land to
sunshine and rain whatever your mood in addition to folks coming home with
various skills manners and working criteria that could create sustained
employment and dignity for all.

There are individuals and organisations working on ensuring this human capital
is not wasted. One of them is Basil D’Cunha a career guidance counsellor has
sent out a message across Goa announcing that training would be imparted in
seven areas. Contact Basil for further details co o Heraldo edition July 9th

With UK Funeral arrangements now a growing industry GWS must be commended for
their arrangements of cost effective fixed costs repatriations of deceased
Goans from UK to their families in Goa in 2018 at a fixed cost of GBP2,100.00
on average while burial costs in UK is around GBP4,600.00 our people are always
looking for cheaper initiatives. The only criteria is that you have a
Portuguese Passport and claim to have no money.

Despite having a guide price, it is not unusual on the death of the newly
arrived specially a Portuguese National of Goan origin to see appeals of even
higher sums on social media by individuals. Is this in desperation due to high
levels of rejection for Money assistance by GWS and G.O.A. UK or is begging by
individuals more lucrative feeding on the goodwill of others?

Mismanagement in any organisation are like weeds in a garden left unchecked
they will destroy the garden and the fields beyond. Good management is
required for any organisation to grow and flourish.

I can remember attending the inauguration of the Goan Welfare Society by the
Late Mani Rodrigues at a facility by the then Newham Goan Circle with its

Half Term report on Observations of Goan Welfare Society (GWS) in the UK

A post holder of a Charity is called a Trustee.

The Goan Welfare Society charity no 280542 has no Staff since1983 hence the
money you contribute is held in Trust by the trustees and disbursed at their
discretion, you have no say in the matter and the Dead cannot speak. So to the
gullible, continue to put your hands in your pocket and donate to the appeal
which appeared on Goan Voice UK by unelected Trustees on which I can only
describe as take, take any which way they can this time under cover of Covid 19.

If you agree, GWS and G.O.A. UK are both sides of the same coin same people
different hats who I have observed over a decade the unchecked hijacking and
thrashing of the Goan Association UK ever since our Clubhouse at Ravensbourne,
Kent was burnt to cinders in the fire on 21 September 1998. As can be seen by
everyone, our community is still homeless and our youth do not know whether
they are coming or going.

At a Goan Village Feast a couple of years ago, the Trustees Report of the Goan
Welfare Society was scattered on tables so I picked one up. This was for the
Financial Year ended 31 December 2016 and was drawn up for their Annual General
Meeting 2017. This report did not indicate date, venue or how many members
attended. The report stated “I would like to highlight the generous legacy
left to GWS by Antoinette De Souza and this source of income has brought us a
total of £212,500.00 in 2016”. I have also heard on the Goan grapevine that
other sizable donations from deceased Goans from their estate have been made.
Goan Welfare Society also raises money from its annual fundraising New Year’s
dance every year in premium price ticket sales, revenue from the bar and
catering, raffles, sales of party hats, etc. where our community part money in
good faith, in addition to sobbing letters with crocodile tears to the bereaved,

The distributing of the Goan Welfare Society Trustees Annual General Meeting
2017 at Goan village feast socials, is I wonder another fund raising campaign
to capture the feel good factor at village feasts to instruct their respective
Annual General Meetings held on feast days to donate bos festas?

In view of the above, I noted in Goan Voice dated 2 June 2020 that a further
appeal was made for funds, this time under cover of Covid 19 by the Goan
Welfare Society UK. In this appeal it states that “as required by the Charity
Commission, the Charity has to operate as an autonomous body with its own
membership and raising its own funds” I was indeed delighted to see the audited
accounts with a healthy balance sheet for the year ending 2018

With a balance of GBP£ 260,000.00 in GWS coffers, I am concerned that continual
appeals are made for money this time under cover of Covid 19.

[Goanet] UK: Good and Sad News – Coronavirus number 19

UK: Good and Sad News – Coronavirus number 19

Having always maintained that the cream of Goa is in Goa. on Sunday 20 April
2020 the team at Goa Medical College led by 58yr old Dr Edwin Gomes at the
front line declared that Goa State was Covid -19 free, it is the first Indian
state to do so. Over our Global Village there are professionals like Dr
Edwin Gomes committed to bringing this pandemic to conclusion and we wish them
every success. In the UK human trials for the vaccine are expected to start
this Thursday 23 April 2020.

In England, an extension of the lockdown for another three weeks has been
announced and is enforced with heavy fines. Life as we know it has been totally
disrupted with over 800 people dying during a 24 hour period in hospital, the
current total being 17,337 including our people. We are yet to be advised on
the number who have died in our old age care homes or outside the hospital of
Covid-19. Our condolences to their families may their souls rest in peace.

When the pandemic first broke out, there was a rush for food in the London area
and other parts of the UK ,resulting in empty shelves and the shortage of food
particularly milk, pasta, flour and other essential items. There must have
been a sigh of relief amongst greengrocers with the arrival of 28.95 tonnes of
fruit and vegetables on 13 April ferried by Air India.

With nearly all restaurants, pubs and coffee houses closed on government
orders, food delivery wholesalers have had to diversify. One such company is
Natures Choice of Covent Garden featured in London Evening Standard of 2 April
and Goan Voice UK. Its Commercial Director Vernon Mascarenhas ex Mombasa has
seen a boom in their free home delivery service from 16 to more than 1000 a day
in less than two weeks. Facebook and Google are just two of the companies that
have recommended the home delivery service to their employees. What: Fruit and
veg boxes and £15 essentials boxes (eggs, milk, bread). Where: Across London.
Check website for postcode radius area.

The Goan Association in Swindon is voluntary collecting donations of spare
tinned long lasting & dry food which will be distributed to those in need. If
you need or would like to donate food please contact.

It was in 1970s and early 80s I came across Remo’s music and Goanna Postcards
featuring Mario Miranda’s sketches. Being new arrivals and working all week
Saturday night was party time mainly house parties just like we did in East
Africa and the occasional Jacket and Tie events organised by the then
respectable Goan Association (UK) that worked in partnership with our community.

The host would normally cook a huge meal like we did in East Africa with guests
travelling long distances to party hard, the Music Master playing recorded
English music we left Kenya with memories of Cliff Richard and Elvis Presley,
Swahili songs like Malaika and Mama Sophia garnished with our music by Chris
Perry, Alfred and Rita Rose these were all played in vinyl or cassette tape.

Having an Interest in Telecommunications the Lyrics of the song asking Graham
Bell if he heard the telephone system in Goa he would jump in the well created
an interest, at the time I had to agree with him. Electrical wiring in Goa
today is another matter. Special ad hoc parties with close friends normally
someone just returning from Goa with feni accompanied by Remo’s music kept the
patriotic Goan nourished whatever age.

It will have been around 1984/5 at the Navy Ball in Bogmalo that Remo played at
sunset under the mango tree he was indeed the master of the flute, guitar and
gumot I think this was his first gig having returned to Goa from Paris.

Over the years his music kept the Patriotic Goan living away from home
nourished and always had a meaning. It was sad to hear him leave Goa with the

[Goanet] The Goan Clubs – East Africa

2020-04-09 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
   The Goan
Clubs – East Africa

Hi Adolfo

I do not recall ever saying I was or that Thornton Heath, Surrey was a bastion
of Knowledge and Culture of the Goans. Neither did I ever say Selma was
either. If you enjoy reading her work and gaining knowledge from it, you are
most welcome to continue doing so, it is a free world! With the present
lockdown in Goa, I am sure you have plenty of time on your hands for such
reading.

As said by Vivian and I agree, the clubs in East Africa were a “home away from
home”, I certainly spent many a happy time there and it was a place I returned
to for evening and weekend entertainment.

In England the Pub is the Englishman’s front room where you meet there is no
worry about clearing up or cooking as you do at home when expecting visitors.
The Goan Club was similar we always went home.

My teenage nostalgia of motor racing is now shared by petrol heads at formula
one racing with the sound of vehicles like mosquitoes going eee eee wiz and big
money changing hands in racing circuts around the world including India.

With over forty years of Honorary community work in our community I have met Ms
Stella Mascarenhas–Keyes and enjoyed her work also the Late Joe Mendes from
Moira who used to market a boys home in Quepem.

I stumbled across the kudd system by accident in Dhobitalao Bombay in the late
1970 while looking for the Goan Club there. These run down Goan village
shelters in buildings needing attention was an education, each village ran a
chapel where our people contributed towards food and lodgings while in transit
to the wider world of employment and opportunities the life in these kudds was
brought to life by director Bardroys Barettos film with English Sub titles
Nachom –ia Kompasar which brought a tear to my eye.

The carnival in Goa just before Lent has a display of floats entered by most
villages displaying their best. I recall an excellent entry by Quepem
displaying in detail farming methods on a floodlit float. Having worked the
fields in Goa(Shethan) this was appreciated.

Hidden away amongst the lush green lawns, purple bougainvillea plants and
mango tree in the Pilar Seminary Complex is a museum, the exhibits in display
cabinets are barely visible as its glass coverings are caked in dust and need
specialist cleaning. The exhibits house the Heritage of Govapury beautifully
illustrated in a book by Fr Cosme Jose Costa ISBN 8 -903898-6-6. Artefacts
start from the Stone Age and may give an insight into our culture and
traditions.

Sorpotel you may be aware is a Peasant dish from Portugal and is our King dish,
what does that make us? Adolfo could be a prominent name as in Hitler, could a
middle name be Fidel as in Castro I ask due to the changing landscape of our
names and surnames.

You will find of interest what Father Victor Farrao says in the article from
Times of India on our surnames and how we acquired them.

Click below:

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Digging-deep-into-surname-stories/articleshow/5196.cms

I hope that the above will be of assistance in seeking what is Goan Culture.
Please be safe in these troubled times.

[Goanet] The Goan Club - East Africa

2020-04-06 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
The Goan Club – East Africa.

Nearly all of my education in Nairobi came from religion through the church
with its clear aims and objectives. Likewise our Goan Clubs also had aims and
objectives and as Vivian Dsouza who lived in Dar es Salaam stated “was a home
away from home”. It was truly our second home, where we met friends. Like
birds of a feather, we flocked together I am sure that it was our folks who
oiled the British colonial administration within the East African Community
Countries of Kenya Uganda and Tanzania will agree.

The Goan Clubs evolved from just a meeting and greeting spot networking to
mainly western sporting competitions with each other followed by socials.

As a teenager I used to travel in a Morris Minor to Nakuru and Pit stop at the
Goan club there on my way to the car races where a Saturday job awaited
selling Ice Cold bottled Coca Cola preserved in sawdust sheltering them and
delaying the ice blocks melting in the heat of the equatorial sun . The money
was not much but worth the ringside seat to watch the skilful drivers of Alfa
Romeo, BMW, Fords etc competing against each other along with motorcycle
events. Other classmates worked at the horse racing track or Golf Course in
Nairobi.

As a Club we would travel by OTC bus to Goan Club Kisumu for their Sports Day
followed by Social. Recall leaving School early to play Billiards and Snooker
at the Nairobi Institute. We also had a good indoor Badminton Court and a newly
refurbished highly polished spring dance floor.

At the Eldoret Club while younger I recall getting my first Christmas present
from Santa it was an inflatable plastic Globe. I fondly remember the late Peter
Rodrigues who would collect several of us in the Team Bus his Vw Combi for
football matches. I later worked with Peter alongside several volunteers
running the Goan Association (UK) Sports Day in London, England before and
after we had a clubhouse premises these events were always to capacity with
enthusiastic participants . There were also sporting events with Mombasa this
list can go on and on.

The Goa Toronto facilitated a splendidly organised Youth Convention in Toronto
Harbour front where I heard Konkani for the first time spoken with an American
accent by Goan visitors from somewhere in America. A City tour and picnic at
Thousand Islands was also in the Programme.

Our Goan Teachers taught us to read and write the Queens English. Our
Examination papers were from Cambridge England so on arrival in England we
spoke better English than the locals with their dialects and encountered our
first encounter with racism. Looking for employment, you would be asked if
you have any London Experience.

The lancers at 1st SCOGO Goan Clubhouse Beckenham, England was not a surprise
but the Kunbi dance was as I had never seen this before and had it featured
on the front page of the Goan Association Newsletter that was edited by me.
Marianno Gonsalves led the dance. In Nairobi South B I used to watch my Hindu
neighbours dance the Dandia, a dance of nine days nine days celebrating
Navratri which takes place a month before Diwali and the Garba.

At no time did I come across any of these dances at the Nairobi Institute, we
watched Cowboy and Indian Films and occasionally went to the Drive In Cinema in
South B.

So I fail to acknowledge that the Goan Clubs were a Custodian to Our Culture as
stated by Selma Carvalho.

Most of us accompanied our parents when leaving East Africa during and after
independence.

Those of us who stayed in the United Kingdom for over fifty years have had
hardly any criminal record and carried on limited Club activities as a search
for premises began, that’s another long story.

Today in the United Kingdom we have Europeans of another colour as the new
arrivals from Goa

Personally the friendship and camaraderie that the East African Goan developed
through the networking of clubs through reciprocal arrangements have still a
long way to be connected with the new Goan arrivals. The Goan of today is not
the same people I was matured and educated with.

Sadly the only connection is an unaccountable breakway trading as a Charity
Goan Welfare Society which collects money for coffins to fund the bodies of the
deceased back to Goa. To Qualify you have to have a Portuguese passport and
claim to have no money.

Their details can be found on the G.O.A.UK.COM WEBSITE.

Once we can answer the question of what is Goan Culture then we can agree or
disagree as to whether Goan Clubs in East Africa were its Custodians.

Announcement to all call signs please pass on to family and friends, special
attention to frontline personnel.

This Corona virus Covid -19 is indiscriminatory, you need to protect your
respiratory tract both upper and lower with immediate effect. If you agree,
prevention is better than cure.

The NBC Respirator with its charcoal filled canister is no match.

The structure of this Virus is protected by a fat membrane that can be
dissolved by soluble fat destroying the virus. Folks goggles, masks, washing
your hands with soap are all helpful. Applying coconut oil is the best of all
cooking oils (Do not use engine oil) to the nostrils, eyes, ears. mouth and
will act as a barrier to entry points into our respiratory systems. Suggest
also apply like camcream to the face and hands and hair as the fat in the oil
captures and dissolves this invisible virus on contact and kills it curbing
the spread. I have tried it and feel better.

Those who graduated in basic training field craft will remember how improvising
crushing fern leaves for scent and as a repellent kept Midges and Horse flies
feeding on you, can’t remember if it worked on Mozzies.

UK Update: Important Notice 14:00 – Sunday 20 Oct 2019 Goan Association UK
Members

It is important that you attend the Annual General Meeting on Sunday 20 October
2019 as it is a facility provided for by Law. The xxth Annual General Meeting
is at the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, HSBC Sports and Social Club, Lennard
Road, Beckenham, BR3 1QW at *no time given* I am told that this is on page two
of document sent to you i.e. 2pm.

Remember when the beer goes in the brains go out. In our ancestral Goa Alcohol
is Banned a day or two before elections it’s in our DNA that can blur decision
making processes. Satisfy yourself before voting and approving any resolution
or appointments without the knowledge of the whole membership as this will be
null and void. Take special care dealing with Goans with Water Melon Smiles aka
GWS embedded in the website of Goa UK expert at contacting bereaved families
with their sobbing letters and crocodile tears including fundraising for Coffin
Funding in the name of welfare, No Accounts, Who Cares, sadly I do. This is
your opportunity to ask any questions during the presentation of the accounts.
I have often written that Goans are not dimwits when it comes to money. You
could say my imagination is running wild, I think some of these are people who
have taken up volunteer posts have satellite dishes in their handbags and
wallets, with antennas tuned in to grab your money any which way it can.
Like the next dance, raffles, party hats, etc, what a cheerful way during the
season of goodwill to add to their additional streams of income.

It was good to note that the intellectual Property of the association (The
Logo) has been restored on the Notice of Meeting this was defaced during the
50th Anniversary celebrations. There must be some good people around that have
kept the company afloat. The company secretary is the most powerful person in
this outfit unlike those of village associations although they play a pivotal
role in the community.

UK Goans will recall The Goan Association UK by the time it reached its 40TH
Anniversary evolved to a respectable Limited company and Community organisation
registered in England and Wales its Directors became the servants of the
Company and the membership became its owners. Our community that became the
heartbeat of Goan society is today so broken that we now have many
organisations with different schools of thought no central objectives to enable
us to have one voice in the United Kingdom.

Over the last decade since the millennium the servants of the company appear to
have developed into wannabe MLAs with Cockroach mentality, blatantly violating
its constitution and rules as its owners the members (General Body) continue to
look the other way stating that they are not interested as they have better
things to do rather than striving to do things better. This resulted in the
servants trashing the organisation as its owners did nothing. The Culling of
members due to incompetence by certain post holders will continue to eliminate
the membership resulting in a situation where a handful of members could walk
away with the assets.

Unless you the owners and members attend the meeting take back charge and give
matters your serious consideration, we are heading for a faceless society
before the second decade of the millennium.

The views expressed above are personal and should not be used as any authority.

you by UK Law it is important you involve in policy decisions within the
relevant mechanisms of a limited company.

Meeting is open to Fully paid members, there may be a facility for Instant
Renewal at the door. Most Life members will be in their Sunset Years, in
Nursing homes or no longer with us, give those able to attend a hand if
possible.

We are approaching the second decade of the millennium where the next
generation of youth will grow as mongrels as their parents and organisations
have better things to do rather than do things better abdicating their
responsibility in bringing them up with Goan Values and Culture throwing them
into Britain’s melting pot called diversity.

Remember a decade ago there was an attempted cull of members designed for
certain wannabe MLA type office bearers to walk away with the assets of the
company

It is good to note that the intellectual Property of the association (The Logo)
has been restored on the Notice of Meeting this was defaced during the 50th
Anniversary celebrations. Personally I feel the lies over the years have got
so big that nobody has the balls to call it a lie anymore why else is the font
of the notice of meeting so tiny.Artificial intelligence makes people brain
dead. I have been given to understand that Bank charges for the whole year are
shown as GBP 1.00? Maybe management can divulge to members their secret in
securing such a good rate from the bank of charges of GBP 1.00? We could
learn something; this is your opportunity to ask this question during the
presentation of the accounts. I have often written that Goans are not dimwits
when it comes to money. You could say my imagination is running wild, I
think some of these are people who have taken up volunteer posts have satellite

At the door there should be an attendance Register of Members present. Total
amount of members on the books. With thousands and thousands of new arrivals

[Goanet] Are Goans Stupid, Dim Witted People? Response to Dr Oscar Rebello, Goa News 21 August 2019

2019-08-25 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
.

However, I am still of the belief that the cream of Goa is in Goa itself,
unfortunately from what I can see, a large majority are using their energy and
enterprise to avail of the domestic and international tourist trade to fill
their pockets with lucrative amount of rupees to fatten their bank accounts.
This, in my opinion, is leaving them little time to spend on projects to
improve their environment or be bothered about their surroundings?Who is
voting in these politicians? Who can improve the quality of life in this case
the basic human right of water, electricity and shelter? It is of note that
on the brighter side the much loved and abused Ration card ensures no one is
starving in Goa hence attracting migrants to a better life in the former
Portuguese Goa from the former British India.

Another observation is that patriotic Goans originally from East Africa who
had renovated family homes or purchased houses and flats in Goa to spend the
cold winters of Europe back home have now started a recent trend of “selling
up”, deciding not to bother even visiting anymore. The main reason is that
the quality of their vacation has deteriorated to such an extent that their
hard earned money spent in coming to Goa can be better spent elsewhere in the
whole wide world. Declining international tourism in Goa is far from being
addressed and time will tell if any improvement in international high end
tourism continues. Especially when you have to empty your wallet of all Indian
Rupees at departure points to extortionate Foreign exchange rates leaving you
with none to come back with.

To conclude we might be seen by Dr Rebello as a stupid dim witted people never
prepared to ask the right questions but from my observations, this stupidity is
short lived when it comes to improving our lives and bank balances. At this
point we turn into a very clever race, never hesitating to pack up our bags and
flow with the wind or water to what we see as greener pasture lands or blue
seas! The loyalty to mother Goa does not become a consideration. Yesterday
I saw the Disney film “Lion King” when a monkey asked the lion, “I know who I
am, but do you know who you are?”

Your views on the above are welcomed.

[Goanet] O Heraldo "They will dance to the tunes of Lorna in UK, but they need to have a greater voice in Goa”

O Hsraldo article Sunday 4th August ,Courtesy of Goan Voice UK

“They will dance to the tunes of Lorna in UK, but they need to have a greater
voice in Goa”

Reply from Melvyn Fernandes, Lawndon – UK for people not on Facebook

Dear Esteemed Readers of O Heraldo,

Allow me to table a correction statement about our people in UK seeking clarity
through FT for our people in Goa.

No, no, no I don’t mean the pink pages of the Financial Times but the FT World
of our Goan People FT - Fotkiros (liars) Toddokis (cheats).

The festival of today or Goa Day was originally held on the six and half acres
of grounds freehold land owned by the Goan Association UK with the Veranda of
the Clubhouse transformed to a stage from where our musicians and entertainers
have always kept us happy as they do today. People forgot their troubles for
a carefree day with friends and family used to meet and greet under the banner
of SCOGO – Standing Conference Of Goan Organisations, an opportunity for
Village Organisations to Showcase their Villages which they did with Pride. The
Event was financially self-funding thanks to nearly a hundred volunteers
participating.

The Goan Association was Hijacked over 10 years ago and SCOGO died, since then
there has been no proper accountability, by this I mean the revenue from
Entrance, Car Parking and other Income Streams like Raffles, Stall Rental do
not add up, leading to Suspicious Minds and an alleged Hand in Pocket
Enterprise with Zero development for our Goan Community in UK and towards our
people in Goa.

The organisation can only claim to be the richest Goan Club in the world as the
current management still “basks in the glory” from the proceeds of an insurance
claim roughly in the region of £300,000 when the Club House bought by mainly
East African Goans was burnt down. You will note that for an organisation
that claims the be the richest Goan Club in the world the poverty it displays
to our people is appalling.

Last year shows a recent example on the numbers attending the biggest ever
billed 2018 Goan Festival at Cranford, West London, UK. With reports and
videos coming out that over 10,000 attended, our people around the world may
feel envious that things are going so well here, not realising that we are
actually in Breadline Britain. Once again, I feel duty bound to comment on
this figure.

In 2018 putting the record straight is very easy as some of our enterprising
Goan youth have come to my assistance, recording their experience of this event
on Video. Their uploaded version on U-Tube is titled “Goa Day 2018 Routex” and
I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate them for their
excellent recording. For those of you who wish to see it the link is below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKxGkyKbY6Y

Viewers can see that starting at 6.57 of 26.51 there is a recording of the
aerial view of the whole of Goa Day UK 2018. One can see seven coaches neatly
parked, a number of cars and a group of single men all in one area of the
grounds as well as 10,000 plus blades of grass.

Today this is an event where the needs of our people are met with Greed
specially the gullible new arrivals. Note very few Ladies and Families
participate.

Perhaps OHeraldo can get accurate figures from the current management of those
attending this year’s festival at close of play for the record.

>From all of us thousands not attending Happy Birthday Lorna Cardozo on your
>75th and a warm welcome to the most humble ambassador from Goa.

Nostalgia is a necessary thing, I believe, and a way for all of us to find
peace in that which we have accomplished, or even failed to accomplish. At the
same time, if nostalgia precipitates actions to return to that fabled,
rosy-painted time, particularly in one who believes his life to be a failure,
then it is an empty thing, doomed to produce nothing but frustration and an
even greater sense of failure.

What is the significance of the triumphal entry?

The triumphal entry is that of Jesus coming into Jerusalem on what we know as
Palm Sunday https://www.gotquestions.org/Palm-Sunday.html , the Sunday before
the crucifixion (John 12:1 https://biblia.com/bible/esv/John%2012.1 , 12
https://biblia.com/bible/esv/John%2012.12 ). The story of the triumphal entry
is one of the few incidents in the life of Jesus which appears in all four
Gospel accounts (Matthew 21:1-17 https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Matt%2021.1-17 ;
Mark 11:1-11 https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Mark%2011.1-11 ; Luke 19:29-40
https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Luke%2019.29-40 ; John 12:12-19
https://biblia.com/bible/esv/John%2012.12-19 ). Putting the four accounts
together, it becomes clear that the triumphal entry was a significant event,
not only to the people of Jesus’ day, but to Christians throughout history. We
celebrate Palm Sunday to remember that momentous occasion.

UK : Holy Week & Palms – Greasing Of – The difference

Unlike Palm Sunday where crowds waving palms welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem,
today in the United Kingdom we have newly arrived and gullible Goans in
the London area (many of whom are leaving hostile environments in the Gulf
region and economic conditions in Goa) greasing the palms of fellow Goans
in Breadline Britain 2019.

At our home in Nairobi during the 1960s, we used to receive the Don Bosco
Magazine from Matunga, Bombay. There was a constant reminder on each
issue “A family that prays together stays together”. At the Goan
Institute notice Board there was a cyclostyle newsletter from the Goan
Association ‘UK’ sent by John Ferreira from Luton and one from Sydney
Australia the format was similar to the Goan Institute Nairobi dutifully
pinned for us all to read and share by Bruno the General Secretary.

The year must have been around 1968 when I was about seven or eight years
old, the excitement I had in selling a complete Raffle book at the Catholic
Parochial School fete in Nairobi. Some of my older schoolmates could sell a
Lottery book of 11 with a commission of one free ticket for every book
sold. The funds raised was towards the building of the New Holy Family
Cathedral (Now Basilica) most organisers and voluntary workers came from
generations of my community of Goan origin. The Catholic church and our
people have been in Kenya since 1542.

For the history of the Catholic Church in Kenya click link below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpvLdmyM7HQ

Having served on the Legion of Mary Committee at St Theresas Catholic
Church, Eastleigh, I was well versed in minute taking, keeping the
attendance register, basic accounts, etc this was good grounding in later
life. Playing hockey and football for the Goan Institute was good for
teamwork and morale especially for us teenagers sipping a cold refreshing
lemonade accompanied by a portrait of Rita Faria the then Miss World 1966
hung over the doorway in the lounge past the Rock Garden.

As a teenager, life was full of fun and parties including the Annual
holidays to Goa with our parents catching the Shipping Corporation Ships
SCI Haryana, Kampala and Karanja at Kilindini Harbour, Mombasa while our
English friends took the B Mckinnon lines to England we only met at
sporting events like rugby and basketball.

I took part in the first Kenya National Freedom From Hunger Charity and
still have the receipt for money collected and donated.

None of us could see or understand the epiphany happening right in front of
us. I waved my Uncle Noel (now RIP) catching an Egypt Air Flight to
London, My Uncle Peter to Germany at Embakasi Airport whose walls were
decorated with wildlife paintings by The Late Caji Fernandes his wife Julie
used to co-ordinate sporting activities at the Goan Institute not
forgetting Andrew Dias for his wildlife Photograph Postcards and
Photographer Alex Fernandes of Sapra Studios.

Our family moved from a Four bedroom Bungalow into a garage as most of our
parents lost their jobs just like that overnight due to Africanisation
creating a hostile environment including being refused to higher
education. We had to leave the country we were born in or take up local
Nationality.

For a video on Immigration AKA New Immigration Bill – Asians Leave Kenya
(1968) click below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1PKCRNIiaE

I remember climbing the gangway of the East African Airways flight staring
at the Roll Royce RB2II Engines waving to friends before taking my seat and
looking at the lights of Nairobi Town disappear as the flight took off into
the night sky for London Heathrow to be met by my Aunty Rose with warm
clothing.Transport to our first accommodation in one room at Seven
Kings, Essex was provided for by my Dad’s Sikh friends. We also had a kind
Irish social worker, Mrs Walsh, who helped us settle down into a big house
and true to the words from Don Boscos Magazine “A family that prays
together stays together”our family has lived in St Johns road for over
forty years.

The first landmark in a strange country was to look for the Catholic Church
where joining the legion of Mary at SS Peter and Paul, Ilford had similar
duties as Nairobi only that in Kenya President Kenyatta issued a decree
that there is only one President. The Legion Branch at Eastleigh had to
adapt changing the post name of President to Chairman. Capital Radio had
a job club running and LBC talk shows provided useful information for
unemployed teenagers like me.

The London Evening Standard was also valuable in looking for Jobs specially
the Friday Edition as you looked out for notices from The Goan Overseas
Association for events and Notices of Meetings. First Class postage was 4
pence. It was cost effective to a

We talk of Goans as though we are some fruit or vegetable marble even a fruit
and nut case there is always one rotten fruit that can affect the whole basket
unless removed and isolated. Those aware will know that some of the original
Goans migrated to Goa from Northern India escaping a famine to settle on the
banks of the Glorious and Magnificent Rivers of Goa one of which is the
Mandovi. The native Goa Goan is short and very dark while everyone else is fair
and taller.

As a reminder of River Mandovi and tribute to Alfred Rose and the twin bridges
before the trinity of the third bridge part of the Bombay By Pass to Kerala
via Goa and Karnataka MH47 a distance of 1270km crossing just over one km of
sparking water.

It is a blessing that Prime Minister Modi’s Diary was full and the opening date
postponed. The extra weight could have brought about an almighty splash bit
like the straw that broke the camels back and workmanship badge to the
engineers involved. Goa as it is has to deal with Litter and Noise pollution.
Even guests at the Mandovi Hotel looking for a restful night are not spared as
they are blasted with Very Loud so called music from the uncaring casino boats
tethered to the banks opposite. This is also true for nearby Fidalgo a nearby
Four Star Hotel on enquiring the standard reply it’s the “untouchable
politicians” if this is true, it cannot be right only good for business
hearing aid manufacturers.

There is also the issue of Road Surface noise reduction along the route some
1270km, rest and washroom facilities for long distance travellers, perhaps the
reason the road including the trinity bridge is at skyscraper height could
attract visitors from the former British India stopping in Goa instead of being
waved through to Kerala.

For an example of what happens at a low flyover near Hounslow London England

Where Money is allowed to be made in dishonourable ways there will always be
bad fruit when left unchecked is a breeding ground for corruption unless our
people have pride in their environment, pull their finger out and take
appropriate action then I have to agree that Goans have no sense of shame.

[Goanet] Dear Babu – Tourism Minister Goa 2019

2019-01-13 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
Dear Babu – Tourism Minister Goa 2019

Dear Manohar Azgaonkar

Issue: Tourism in Goa

Timing: Immediate

Background and Recommendation – As Below

I am writing to you for the record as having been involved with other pioneers
in setting up the Air Bridge for direct flights from the United Kingdom, UK to
Goa, the first flight being on Paramount Airlines putting Goa on the Tourist
Map over twenty years ago.I am very disappointed and feel let down with the
current state of affairs.

It is not your fault or that of the Government of Goa that Greed is openly
flaunted by most local people. For example in November 2018 I managed to get
to Baga Beach courtesy of Goa’s Hop On Hop Off Bus (Ho Ho Bus) I looked for a
place where I tasted Prawn Papad for the first time some twenty years ago. Not
being sure whether it was St Anthony’s or Sea Pearl asking around came across a
Pan Spitting waiter with a scowl who did not speak any English or Konkani and
walked away. This put me off, I ended at Brittos Shack ordered a Lime Soda
only to be served with Lime Juice, the squid served was very bland nothing like
our Goa taste garnished with masala and coconut vinegar. A bottle of Honeybee
on the menu had a price tag of INR 1,270.00 where in Mapusa the retail price is
INR 189.00 even with Government Sales Tax the price displayed, if you agree, is
pure greed. Baga Beach three years ago resembled the Costas in Spain. On this
visit, there was not one “Foreigner” or Russian in sight for a place blessed
with sunshine and the harvest of the sea with empty sun beds.

Instead there is a concreted Pay Car Park large enough for twenty football
pitches for cars and coaches. Some of these coaches bring fourth generation
visitors from the former British India who display a lack of potty training and
poor hygiene standards thus soiling the Beach with the call of nature creating
a stench despite having washroom facilities nearby at INR 10.00 to use. The
men can afford drink and break bottles on the beach for a thrill that is not
their backyard and have no respect for local people. For a factual video
summary

It was heartbreaking the see the once tree lined Panjim to Mapusa Road
resembling the French Reviera with flowers on roundabouts destroyed and
dissected, diversions due to huge man made concrete boulders and debris from
the Bombay by pass to Kerala via Goa. Locals say that there will be a slope at
Porvorim. There should also be washrooms at the bottom of the slope otherwise
travellers will be answering the call of nature in the fields and building wall
creating stench and disease if not addressed.

I also know that as part of Modieconomics India and China are Competing for
World Top Spot but at what cost. India is a democracy, at least have Goa
restored to its former Glory, restore meetings with the good people at Travel
and Trade Association of Goa (TTAG) and work on a direction or like the Titanic
prepare to sink. Every young Goan person you speak to can’t wait to leave.

[Goanet] Change the Miramar Beach benches says Goacan.

2019-01-05 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
Change the Miramar Beach benches says Goacan.

It was good of GOACAN aka Goa Can Do, the founders of Friday Balcao, to
circulate the article by Paul Saldanha writing in O Heraldo of 15 November 2018
about the state of beach benches on Miramar Beach. I am obliged to Goanet for
bringing this matter for attention of the general public and public
administrators who appear to have no initiative, unless managed. Lets give
them a hand while the cement is hot near Panjim Bus Stand.

The Bombay By Pass (MH47) goes through Goa snaking the coastal route on the
west coast of India on its way to Kerala via Karnataka a distance of over
1270km is still under construction, there is enough spare cement dumped in Goa
to mould new benches for Miramar and other public places in need of street
furniture on land run by public authorities including the covering of storm
ditches that are a hazard to the elderly and physically challenged.

There is also plenty of wood from the felling of trees for Mopa
Airport.Carpenters may be available from Sequeira Coffin Makers in Panjim.
Appeals for Collection for one bed Coffin funds by Goans With Watermelon Smiles
(GWS) in the London (England) area appear to have paused as there is so much
money in the pot for Portuguese Passport holders of Goan Origin who have died.
The NRI Office would be able to assist.

There should also be enough funding from revenue in state taxes to pay for the
labour force as required. Contact your MLA. After all that is needed is sand
and cement held by metal plentiful in Goa for the creation of employment
opportunities.

Hope this is helpful.

2018-12-18 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES

THE WINDS OF CHANGE ARE A BLOWING OVER GOA.

By Leslie St. Anne

The ethos of any culture is determined by its traditions creatively and
collectively expressed in art, literature, music, dance, architecture and sport
that are dependent on factors, external such as environment, and those that are
inherent as determined by ones spiritual and human beliefs. It is with this
perspective in mind that one may dare to analyse the drastic social changes
that have overtaken this tiny State of Goa and her people during the last 55
years since ‘liberation’ from the Portuguese in 1961.

To understand the Goan psyche one must delve into Goa’s ancestry. Goa or as it
was known by her many past ‘avatars’ ranging from “‘Gopakpattan or Gomant’, in
the Bhisma –Parva of the Mahabharata,‘Govapur’ in the Suta- Samhita,‘Gouba’ by
geographer Ptolemy to ‘Gopapuram or Gove’ by the Kadambas, has survived through
several Dynasties--the earliest known being that of the Mauryas.” Thereafter,
this ecological paradisecame under the rule of the Satavahanas, Kshatrapas,
Chalukyas, Rastrakutas, Kadambas, Yadavas, Delhi Sultans, Vijayanagar Rulers,
Bahamani Sultans of Deccan and finally Adhilshahis of Bijapur, before Alfonso
de Albuquerque annexed it for Portugal in 1510. Undeniably, both Hindu and
Muslim eras of governance have left indelible marks of influence on the
lifestyle and customs of the indigenous Goan, but without dispute it is the
four and a half centuries of Portuguese “firangi” rule that has moulded the
unique Goan character that is a blend of Western and Eastern cultures without
compromise on religious allegianceallowing for a harmonious existence of
hercitizens. It is this peaceful social fabric of the past that is now in
danger of being torn apart by the lure of ‘materialistic’ and digital
empowerment popularised by unscrupulous politicians under the cover of
‘development’.Post-liberation;the flood-gates have been thrown open to
‘investors, realtors and hoteliers from the rest of India, who have ravaged
Goa’s fast depleting natural resources.

For many a native, Goa’s “Halcyon Days” were during the Portuguese era.
Nostalgic memories of those who lived in Goa at that time painted a picture of
a theocratic administration that ruled with a firm hand without interfering in
the simplistic life-style of the ethnic citizen and their exceptional system of
agrarian-based self-governance and community living that gave birth to the
infamous“Code of Comunidades”.Recalls a retired Goan seafarerwho lived in Goa
in the fifties, “The Portuguese may not have given the State a solid
infrastructure, like roads, electricity, and water in rural areas—since they
concentrated more on urban( City ) development---but, they instilled in one
a‘discipline and respect of law’ with minimum police and military presence.
Crime was a rarity. One felt sosafe and ‘protected’ that it was possible to
leave one’s home open without fear of robbery.” A documentary conducted by
“March of Time” (MOT) director Dwight Godwin of Americain 1953echoes this
view.Heobserved that Goans enjoyed a “good” level of prosperity and that there
was “noextreme of great wealth or great poverty”. The TV journalist felt that
“the standard of living in Goa was very satisfactory in comparison to the rest
of India.”

To the colonial Portuguese, Goa’s mainstay economy was mining of manganese and
iron ore supplemented by farming and fishing. Goa’s natural harbour of Mormugao
was considered “one of the best in all of Asia” and it became an excellent
transit point for exports of manganese ore to USA and Japan and for import of
luxury Itemscheaply from the West that also sustained a profitable
“black-market” trade to Mumbai (formerly Bombay) and other parts of India.
Travelling extensively throughout Goa Godwin inferred that “most Goans
preferred to be Portuguese citizens as they felt that they were better off than
the rest of India”. Nonetheless the “March of Time” director believed that
“change was slowly coming to Goa through its younger generation”. And the
transition would be through education. Godwin noted that there “were 530
schools within a 1300 square mile area opened by the Catholic Church imparting
knowledge in ‘English and Portuguese’.” An impressive literacy rate apart,
Goa’s underlying charm and difference from the rest of the Indian sub-continent
was not lost on the MOT director, a fact with which he confronted the then
Governor General of Goa, Paulo Bernardo Guedes prompting the latter to point
out that “Goa is not a Portuguese Colony but a province like any other province
in Portugal proper. Every citizen of Goa is a full-fledged citizen of
Portugal.” It is this detail that has stood hundreds of Goan youth in good
stead when seeking Portuguese Passports so as to obtain employment abroad.
Those lucky enough to be gainfully employed waste no time in remitting funds
back-home, thereby in a domino effect, improving

Sorrowing lies my land by Lambert Mascarenhas Inspired me during my early
teenage years over 45 years ago while in Nairobi Kenya I will need to read
the book again for the actual wordings .

As India powers ahead with its 5 Trillion Economy, the Motorway or
Skyscraper of a Highway 47 snaking through Goa looks like a civil
engineers dream or a dodgy contractors playground as sleepy villages have
their roads and land devoured with heavy plant and machinery lying
everywhere disregarding any dust control and human health it looks like a
semi controlled Building Site.

This Bombay By Pass to Kerala via Goa Karnataca and Manglore will be over
1270km when completed . The Goa Section towers above villages too high to
gauge the width of this concrete giant. Will there be provision for harbour
areas for emergency vehicles and slip roads for rest stops to villages
whose small shops that also is the backbone of the economy of India.

What happens to the heavy poisonous carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles,
will this just float down to be gratefully received by the cashew, mango
trees amongst other vegetation to be turned into oxygen through
photosynthesis. What will the health implications be amongst humans and
animals.

The Panjim to Mapusa tree lined road containing circles with flowers is
completely broken

Government Officials will come and go. The Administrators currently do not
have any initiative on Goa oh What a State.

[Goanet] UK - Remembrance Sunday 11 November 2018 100th Year Anniversary of the End of the First World War

2018-11-08 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
UK - Remembrance Sunday 11 November 2018

100th Year Anniversary of the End of the First World War

Last Saturday at our local supermarket was a trestle table with merchandise in
a regulated fund raising campaign for the Royal British Legion, a British
National Movement to say “Thank You” to the entire First World War Generation.
All who served, sacrificed and changed our world. Customers appear to be taken
aback as it was manned by fellow Indians.

There was non-existent reporting in the local media that on Sunday 28 October
at the Diwali Celebrations at Trafalgar Square, London there was a limited run
of Khadi Poppies. These poppies are identical to the Legion and Poppy in all
ways except the petals are made of Khadi, a spun cotton cloth popularised by
Mahatma Gandhi on his spinning wheel.

The Legion will not accept any donations for this but asks that it be worn as a
“Thank You” to the First World War Generation and encourage other British
Asians to do the same. Together, we can ensure that Remembrance is understood
and available to all and handed to the next generation.

Asian Voice Vol 47 issue 27 reminds us most Britons are unaware of the
contribution made by the British Indian Army in undivided India of more than 4
million men (over 1.5 Mn in World War 1)

The British memories of those who died in the World Wars is very Eurocentric.
Many have forgotten how soldiers from colonial India gave up their lives for a
country they were not born in, or have ever visited.

The memorial gate at Hyde Park set up by Baroness Flather is the only monument
to particularly remember the soldiers of the Commonwealth.

While war raged in Europe and the Baltics research by Mr Clifford Pereira a
fellow of the Royal Geographical Society tells of Goan Stewards on board Royal
Navy ships in the Battle for lake Victoria in East Africa.

This Sunday the 11 of November attend a service of Remembrance near you and be
an ambassador for Goa for this day at the 11 hour the angry guns went silent a
hundred years ago. The power of Prayer and lighting candles in Church also
helps keep the peace,

Be advised that the Goan Chaplaincy based at St Peter and Paul Church, One
Cranmer Road, Mitcham, Surrey CR4 4LD in addition to the monthly Konkani Mass
is holding a Memorial Service at 3.00pm on 11 November.

Fr Patrick Dsouza has requested you send a list of your loved ones that are no
longer with us and join in at a Tea and Snacks Social after mass.

[Goanet] UK:London West Southall Musical Extravaganza 27 May.

2018-06-09 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
Grina Pereira’s Musical Extravaganza on 27 May 2018 at Villiers High
School,Southall England was “Pure Silk” from Back stage well-dressed and
organised crew to sound and lighting engineers the Band and Master of
Ceremonies seating arrangements to the quality of catering. It was such a
great delight for all who attended PUTTING THE Talent of Goa and its People
Centre Stage.

The Stars off the Musical were our young people, their performance in amche
bhas was indeed refreshing to hear, true ambassadors for their villages in
state of Goa and our people. I hope this revival will continue and encourage
others.

Seen on a recent Whats App:

You can travel First Class or Economy the destination will be the same.

You can wear a Rolex Watch or an Ordinary one the Time will still be the same.

You can drive a Mercedes or a Nano the Road will still be the same Road.

What I am trying to say is as people we Goans say one thing and do another but
we are still Goan, you will find this all around the world as its in the DNA.

We have fellow Goans who work for the development of our community while others
are Hand in Pocket like parasites feeding on our community especially those who
are vulnerable.

If we had no Criminals there would be no need for Police.

We do have a silent majority of Goans with a good name, in time I feel sure
they will come forward and develop our community hopefully in this generation.
The musical show could be a turning point and an example to us all.

UK:Thunder and Lightning Display Setting for Goan Musical

Thunder and Lightning display with 20,000 electrical storms in the early hours
of Sunday 27th May 2018 over London and South England was nature’s setting for
Grina Pereira’s Musical Extravaganza opening night at Villiers High School
Southall where our younger children with 30 songs, 2 dances and 4 part comedy
supported by adults brought to life captivating an audience for an evening
showcasing our Konkani Songs, Music. Comedy and Dance along with a ruchichem
Goan supper.

Only a dedicated volunteer workforce could have laid on a Champagne event not
Prosecco at beer prices. You would be hard pressed to be entertained with
music, comedy and a delicious and tasty Goan 6 course Buffet including Sorpotel
, Chicken Xacuti and Mango miskut supplied by Grinas Catering (07846657791) all
for Stg.£10.00. It is refreshing to note we still have honest people in
Breadline Britain. Credit must also go to the marketing and backup of
volunteers headed by Grina, Peter, Greg, Simon and Francisco.

The show opened with music by Frampton, Sound by Proto, Stage lighting and
special effects by Greg and Compered by Roque & Ciana

Picture shows our participating young people with their personalised memento of
the Musical Extravaganza with Grina true ambassadors for Goa and our music.
Tribute must be paid to their patriotic parents for inspiring and encouraging
our next generation in preserving our music and language Konkani not forgetting
the support of the audience some of who travelled long distances, this
brilliant musical would not have taken place.

Proud to be Goan – Celebrate World Goa Day 19 August 2018.

Eugene

what is in a Name I don’t think there are chapters in America either North or
South

If you agree until we are administratively organised the following will have to
do to connect our people.

Goans of America – GOA

Goans of Birmingham –GOB does not sound right in English

Goan Associations and Societies –Various countries awaiting connection

Global Goan Alliance –mean well no structure

Global Goans –No Structure

Golden Goa Southampton

There are so many issues that until we can agree with one another for the
development of our community nothing will happen.

We can always start with World Goa Day to remind us of our Langauge ,Music
Cusine,Culture and Heritage something for the next generation many are neither
here nor there in the various countries on planet earth.

UK 25 May 2018 GDPR becomes Law are you and your organisation compliant.

What is the GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation is a new, European-wide law that
replaces the Data Protection Act 1998 in the UK. It places greater obligations
on how organisations handle personal data. It comes into effect on 25 May 2018.

The really big issue facing us Goans at the moment is, though, the General Data
Protection Regulations (GDPR) which will also have an effect on clubs and
associations and how they store and use their members’ personal data.

The Information commissioner’s office Phone helpline is aimed at people running
small businesses or charities. To access the new service dial the ICO helpline
https://ico.org.uk/global/contact-us/helpline/ on 0303 123 1113 and select
option 4 to be diverted to staff who can offer support.

This dedicated advice line offers help to small organisations preparing for the
new data protection law, including the General Data Protection Regulation.

[Goanet] UK: 29 April Cortalim Celebrates Ruby Anniversary – A Champagne event at Beer Prices

2018-04-30 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
UK: 29 April Cortalim Celebrates Ruby Anniversary – A Champagne event at Beer
Prices

With the cold icy wind from the artic still blasting the London (England) area
since the start of the feasts season just before Lent there is nothing like the
warm welcome that awaits the annual get togethers at Goan village feasts where
our people with their family and friends meet greet pray and celebrate together
all the ingredients forwards health and wellbeing as personal troubles are
forgotten for at least one day.

Taking centre stage this year was the 40th Annivisary of Cortalim Union UK
celebrating the Feast of St Philip & St James at the newly Refurbished
Archbishop Lanfranc Academy nr Croydon.40 Years is a long time ago and the
dedication with good governance of committee members past and present must be
acknowledged to keep any organisation going in these difficult days. Village
organisations play a vital part in keeping the spirit of Goa alive. The support
given by Cortalim union members and guest is no exception as many travelled
long distances to meet greet and celebrate.

Sunday Mass Celebrant was Fr.Tony Fernandes (Nairobi/Aldona/Manchester) who
informed about the importance of communication with young people as he
explained the reading Peter3:18-24. After mass , Holy pictures were distributed
by Francis on behalf of the Gomes Family while the seating was rearranged to an
intricately decorated hall with the collective creative talent of Lourdes Da
Cruz,Loreta Da Costa,Sandra Fernandes and Linda Thomson. it could easily pass
as the state ballroom of Buckingham Palace no effort was spared. A personalised
tag was designed for everyone to collect a gift bag containing the 40th
Anniversary Souvenir delightfully edited by Christopher Da Cruz and a China mug
embossed with the picture of Cortalim Church of St Philip and St James along
with the logo of Cortalim Union Uk.

The Logo at first glance is unusual on explanation “C” is converted into the
rising sun and “U” is into water/ocean with swaying palms to emphasize the
nature of Cortalim .Orange is the warmth of Cortalim People. Blue is for
perfection, Professionalism and Unity. This criteria was 100 percent including
the annivisary cake designed by Lourdes Da Cruz not forgetting the flower
buttonholes by Piedade DMello and Francina Lobo.

No Goan Party is complete without the ingredients of Good Food,Music and Drink
,the Sumptuous meal was provided by Bernies Catering, music by John Pinheiro
Lead Guitar and Singer,Hilary Pinheiro Drummer,Amorin on Bass Pratnov Fernandes
Keyboard Player Gladrin Fernandes female singer apologies to Rainbows end and
Outbreak I may have got you mixed up both good bands. The generation gap was
filled in by DJ Stephanie and a mention must be made for the low cost bar
services provided by Cos Fernandes and Conrad Henriques of Coscon Bar Services
who contributed to the feel good factor keepin all entairtained and in liquid
refreshment till well after sunset.Spare a thought or the organisers it will
have been a long day organising a champagne event at Beer Prices people came
happy and went home happier long may this trend continue.

[Goanet] UK: Fri 6 April Good News Chocolates escape Sugar Tax

2018-04-08 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
UK: Fri 6 April Good News Chocolates escape Sugar Tax

On Friday 6 April 2018, the UK Government imposed a Tax on all sugary drinks
and juices. This was to tackle the growing obesity in the UK especially among
children and reduce the rise in diabetes and other conditions due to high
consumption of sugary items.

Lucky for us, chocolates were exempt. Chocolates are a high invisible export
from the United Kingdom as they are taken all around the world as presents to
spread happiness.

For us Goans in the UK this is especially good news as for relations and
friends suitcases full of chocolates are taken from here to Goa with goodwill,
a common myth is that they taste better from abroad not because they are given
free purchased from earnings in the UK.

In our FT World , Fotikoros and Toadokis( Liars and Cheats) anything goes. True
a fruit and nut chocolate purchased in Goa may have just one piece of fruit and
half a nut but the taste is, according to my taste buds, no different. Try the
Triangular Toblerore or Ferro Roche let us know the difference if any.

In the UK the Chocolate sizes have got smaller for the same price so this
season even more can fit in a suitcase so you need not miss anyone to share the
happiness. After all who wants to see a sad face during vacation? Cadbury is
still first choice.

[Goanet] UK: The fork in the road with no directional signs and O in the middle - Part A

2018-04-03 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
UK: The fork in the road with no directional signs and O in the middle - Part
A

Easter Bank Holiday Monday and the first quarter of 2018 is over, gone for
ever. The people I grew up with are not the same people we live with today.
When you are persuaded to give your hard earned cash with sob stories and
crocodile tears in the name of Charity keep this in mind.

UK Annual CEO Salaries (e)

Christian Aid GBP £126,000

Cancer Research £240,000

NSPCC £167,000

Unicef £395,000

Age UK £190,000

Macmillan £161,000

British Red Cross £184,000

Oxfam £119,000

Save the Children £163,000

Alas with Goan Welfare UK (£ Amount Unknown) - Is it being shared amongst
Trustees and associates? Is this the question to be asked? See Public
Notification from website of Goan Welfare Society UK.

What would you say on the statement below from GWS Website True or False?

“However, as required by the Charity Commission, the Charity operates as an
autonomous body with its own membership and raising its own funds. The present
Trustees are: Paul De Mendonça, Norma Menezes-Rahim, Alfred Rebello, Raymond
Lobo and Flavio Gracias.”

A communication picked up at a village function by myself and presumably others
attending the function was the trustees report for the financial year ended 31
December 2016 dated 1 October 2017. It did not indicate the venue, date of
meeting, who and how many members were present, etc. Does this organisation
have any criteria or operating standards?

Membership is GBP £1.00 for life based on the Anglo Indian Model of the 1970s
with the Annual “Help A Poor Child” event being their main function. Correct me
if I am wrong but I have heard no more news on either this Annual Fundraising
Event or hot off the press fundraising events for this charity. Will someone in
the know provide an update?

NB: Most of the above were former Directors of the Goan Association who have
now moved across to what appears to be self-appointed, elevated Trustees for
GWS – Goan Welfare Society. I feel sure that anyone who carries out an Audit
trail over the last ten years would find it very revealing. Some UK Banks
offer basic account opening facilities for GBP £1.00 you can always get your
money back on closing protected by the Financial Authorities.

Those living in Breadline Britain have developed and are still developing
innovative income streams. Just look at the recent 31st December 2017Charity
dance organised by the GWS, income streams would have included not just the
ticket money, bar income but lucrative raffle selling as well as hats and
festive items to bring in the New Year. I am also given to understand that
there was revenue from a “Pop Up” pre-planned membership subscription drive.
If you attended the 31st New Year Dance event and feel Toadokid(Cheated)
contact the Police.

In previous communications, I have already touched on our ‘FT world’ of
Fotkiros (Liars) and Todokis (Cheats). The appeals for “funeral funding” to
pay for transportation of the newly arrived Goan who has died in UK back to
Goa, the family claiming to have no money for burial in Goa. Has anyone seen
accountability for such lucrative appeals?

Are those contributing to such appeals aware that accounts of the GWS show a
balance in 2016 of GBP 212, 500 (Two hundred and twelve thousand five hundred
pounds), enough to send at least 100 coffins to Goa! With such a large
balance, I am surprised that no one in our community has questioned why appeals
for funds in 2017 took place.

As a community we have reached a fork in the road with Goan Overseas
Association in the middle with the “O” the left or right with no direction
could be either Goan Association UK Limited Company Registration no 04768032 or
Goan Welfare Society Registered Charity No 280642 with The Goan Association in
the Middle Registration No 04768032. The named Directors are Ms Mary Bernadette
Gracias Company Secretary appointed 18 May 2003, Mr Paul De Mendonca Appointed
May 2003. I can recall the word Overseas being removed some years ago as the
committee at the time felt that we live here in the United Kingdom and are not
overseas people. The G.O.A. Reg no 1626437.

It would be interesting to see what service level agreement any of the above
organisations have? For example within how many days are they supposed to
provide a response when someone writes to them?

The Goan Prymid at Mopa (Part 1) pl circulate to family and friends

For folks who have just joined this conversation The Goan Prymid at Mopa Goa is
intended be a memento to our present civilization specially as it is now
eighteen years since the millennium living in our world of FT Fotkiros (Liars)
Todokis (Cheats) I had difficulty in getting the translation of Honest in
Konkani perhaps this word is not common of the Goan of Today. Thank you for the
various private inputs I will try and address issues raised in bite size parts.
This being part one.

The recant felling of 21,000 trees to make way for Mopa Airport indicates
that of the roots still in the soil and will be given a chance to grow again
like our community ,the branches represent our families and the millions of
leaves all of us worldwide

>From what I gather the Mopa Airport project is still under discussion, the
>felling of trees can only be criminal. To assist decision makers is the Mopa
>Airport ask yourselves is this a need or a want for the State or
>infrastructure of India.

When you fly into Goa you see a canopy of green and a blot on the landscape
where mining activity has taken place. One writer asked if there will be a
heatwave in Goa this year due to the recent destruction of a forest.

With the Easter Break approaching and families meeting in the Balcao and
various homes and events around the world can I persuade you to accept and
participate in an invitation by Global Goans Network who are coming out with a
book on reflections in the form of short stories. Get our younger people to get
creative instead of being screen attached to artificial intelligence If you’ll
have any doubts..or questions..simply write to “The editor” directly on
goastoriesfromchildh...@gmail.com
The editor will guide you. .Your conversation with the editor will remain

Your story (500-3000 words only) of the simpler way of life we use to live in
Goa during your childhood days..the rural life and tradition..the religious
fervor that pervaded was so different from the rest of our country India.
During our childhood days we witnessed the waning years of a time that made us
- rural Goans ,for centuries- following the arrival of the Portuguese.
Now with Goans migrating by the thousands and with the arrival of non Goans
from the rest of our country, India- our unique..colourful way of life is
changing dramatically. This book “goastoriesfromchildhood” will be a collection
of a few selected stories of the Goan way of life we inherited from the
Portuguese. There was that LATINO flavor…that came to be known as the Goan
flavor.
The Goan Hindus were the hardworking working class..the Goan Catholics
preferred the white collared jobs. Yet they lived in harmony … even going to
the extent of celebrating each others festivals.

So here ..this great initiative by The Global Goans Network will come to
frutition and it will be made possible if you send in your story within a time
frame of 4 months. This book is being planned to be released early next year
and we’d like a few Goan stories from Goans living across the diaspora. Feel
free to use our Amchi Bhas, our local colourful Konkani (with it’s English
translation please in brackets) will be acceptable to make this book even more
appealing.(+comical)

Here’s hoping that these untold stories evoke memories..Its a gift to the
younger generations- who are born and spread out in the diaspora. They will get
a taste of the way of life their ancestors lived by. They will get some
knowledge of their roots….
Please try to be as accurate as possible..we want real life stories accompanied
preferably with photographs from the 60s and 70s too.

May I take this opportunity to wish one and all a happy and peaceful Easter.

21,000 trees have been felled. The MOPA Airport project has been stopped while
the search for local workers to be employed resumes.

To get the Pyramid project up and running you will need a committee headed by a
President, on second thoughts scrub this as no one follows any rules.

The days of crab mentality played a vital role in the survival of our people
yester year when our hardy ancestors left the shores of Goa without Travel
insurance to plant the flag for Europeans inland on the dark Continent. Crab
Mentality prevented deaths by stopping people going into disease infested land
and wild animals a place where the Europeans sent you first never to return.

https://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg128379.html Frederick
Noronha

Looks like the MOPA airport project is being steam rolled regardless of
environmental concerns by NGO. This reminds me of an ancient civilization the
Pyramids of Egypt. In Panjim a beautiful building in the shape of a pyramid
is the Library from which a blueprint can be taken.

With 21,000 trees being felled and the fate of the wood yet undecided perhaps
the authorities can consider pyramid building on land within MOPA to receive
the dead being brought to Mother Goa from Abroad for Burial as these bodies
will be contaminated with chemicals to prevent decay. The coffins will be zinc
or lead lined and airtight before export to Goa from the country death occurred.

In Goa I understand graves are recycled every three years as bodies decompose.
To prevent confusion in a land that lacks common sense, bodies from abroad
laced with chemicals may not have decayed after three years and may be assumed
to be saints.A problem for the Church and Society.

If you agree my suggestion for a pyramid area next to Mopa should be considered
for the long term. Who does one seek permission from. were the felled trees
approved as grass to be cut?

As Goa trundles into the next century at least there may be a trace of the
present day in the shape of Goa Pyramids.

[Goanet] UK Red Cold and Dying to get to Goa Update - 1march 2018

2018-03-01 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
UK Red Cold and Dying to get to Goa Update 1 March 2018

Public Announcement - Living in Breadline Britain brings about innovative
income streams. One of the newest of these are the purveyors of transporting
the dead from the United Kingdom to mother GOA for burial. Begging, although
illegal, is lucrative in Breadline Britain. On 17 February 2018 and in the 14
years of Facebook I came across the first fundraiser appeal on this internet
platform to arrange a funeral in Goa for a fellow Goan who died suddenly in
London England.

This appeal has no customer care for people who donated via an unsecured
facebook payment system based in Ireland. I found it incredible that no name or
billing address is required only your card number and security code. And in our
world of Fotkiros (Liars) and Toadokis (Cheats), the donors, with the best of
intentions of participating to help, have left their Bank account details open
to Fraudsters to rinse their accounts. Can anyone translate the word Honest in
Konkani.

I hope I am not too late to advise you to cancel your card with your issuer and
request a new one before you are unwittingly cleaned out and your card issuer
will not be liable for any losses. Check your Bank account immediately and if
compromised inform your Bank and Action Fraud Telephone 0300 133 2040. Fraud is
costing the United Kingdom Economy 193 Billion a year. Stay safe online.

We have based in Cranford, England the Goan Welfare Society who have expertise
in collecting Money and Transporting the Dead to Goa over 10 years. There is
enough money in the account with a balance in 2016 of GBP 212, 500 (Two hundred
and twelve thousand five hundred pounds). It is astonishing with such a large
balance, perhaps someone will help me understand, why we have had appeals in
the whole of 2017 when there are enough funds to for at least 100 coffins in
addition to Income raised at the recent Fundraising New Year’s Ball at
Wandsworth Town Hall through sales of Entry Tickets, Raffles, Paper Hats and
Bar income. So please no more begging direct your request for assistance to
GWS. If you attended this event and feel Toadokid(Cheated) contact the Police.

In 2018, I am really looking forward to our events, Village and Others, being
free of Predatory emotional blackmail appeals accompanying basket collections
and sobbing letters, targeting the bereaved should also stop immediately
Until a list of donors is published and actual Balance update on revenue, only
then GWS and its current Trustees may earn its credibility and respect in the
community.

funeral in Goa for a fellow Goan who died suddenly in London England The
amount asked for is GBP7.500 this appears to be for a four Bedroom Coffin. I
say this because The Goan Welfare Society UK has been having Coffin Appeals
over the last 10 years with letters containing sob stories and unaccountable
Basket Collections and Raffles at Goan Socials, we are told for a fixed fee of
GBP 2100 (TWO THOUSAND ONE Hundred)A one bed Coffin will get you to GOA
Therefore and with due respect for the Bereaved the amount asked for looks like
a scam in Rip off Britain. Sometimes there have been appeals for around GBP
4000 what looks like two bed coffins. There is no need to go on the Internet
Begging for money for Funerals .The Goan Welfare Society has embedded their
Adver
tisement on website GOAUK.COM they currently have enough funds for the first
one hundred coffins please direct your application to GWS Trustees in the first
instance The people assisted so far have been Portuguese Nationals of Goan
Orign whoclaim to have no Money. In Goanvoiceuk of 22 February there is an
article to say that in Goa opposition members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA)
allege some ruling members of the House are wasting tome and that the NRI
office in Goa functions like a bank clearing house of getting the dead bodies
of Goans back to Goa A little like GWS activity in England.Any guess if
unaccounted money is involved.

[Goanet] UK: Government announces Minister for Loneliness Jan 2018

2018-01-23 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
masquerading as a Charity whose
lucrative begging appeals to fellow Goans is on an industrial scale normally
targeting the elderly who have no family support and the venerable with sob
story letters, basket collections at socials and funerals with no public
accounts.

At a recent village function attended, the last GWS Annual General Meeting notes
were on the table and I picked up a copy. This was dated October 2017. To my
recollection, it did not indicate who was present but said that there was a
balance in 2016 of GBP 212, 500 (Two hundred and twelve thousand five hundred
pounds) . It is astonishing with such a large balance, perhaps someone will
help me understand why we have had appeals in the whole of 2017 to airfreight
dead Goans with Portuguese Passports and no Money to Goa. Sums asked were in
multiples of two thousand and four thousand pounds is this for one bedroom or
two bedroom coffins! As it is in Goa, I understand there is a shortage of
grave diggers. The current amount in the accounts will be able to fund at least
100 coffins to Goa!

The must go to “Sold Out” 31 December 2017 social at Wandsworth Town Hall will
have increased this opening balance of 2018.Word on the ground was that this
event was overcrowded, was there a reason for overcrowding? What about the
safety and comfort of their customers?

On a success note, I have observed that since my communications on GWS, bereaved
families are asking for funeral donations to go to much more accountable and
worthy charities.

I look forward to our events, Village and Others, being free of basket
collections and sobbing letters of appeals in 2018. Targeting the bereaved
should also stop immediately with a list of donors published and actual Balance
update on revenue, only then GWS may earn its credibility.May I ask Special
Advisor to Rt Hon Tracey Couch MP to give the Goan Community a look in for
inspiration on Loneliness.

[Goanet] Happy New Year 2018

2018-01-01 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
Happy New Year 2018

Midnight 31 December is usually one of the most celebrated occasions in the
world. This year wil be 18 years since the start of the millennium and a new
society for 18yr old Goan adults and the age of consent on our Planet Earth.

Will this generation born outside Goa and the Goan community abroad ever know
the value of family structure , Certainly in England I have observed their
cross eyed and cross nosed Goan parents shun Goa and our community in preference
to the mongrel or Chotara society around us scavenging for money feeling
elevated and upgraded by fundraising events and Raffles in the name of
Charity and community development when in actual fact its hand in pocket with
no regulatory body to oversee these rich pickings from our proud Goan community
that is nourished dance after dance.

What has been achieved over the years may I ask? There is no right or wrong
answer. Usually, this day is celebrated with close friends and family. But not
everyone is fortunate enough to have their loved ones around.

It is with compliments that 2018 will be brighter and peaceful than the one
passed celebrating your Birthdate Anniversaries with good health and happiness
to one and all.

[Goanet] UK Walking in the Dark

2017-12-15 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
UK Walking in the Dark

We are in the season where people go to work in the dark and return home in the
dark and if your workstation has no windows the chances of seeing sunlight for
three months is minimal. Time for vitamin D tablets or head for the Sun soaked
destinations, if possible.

On Monday a lady in her late Twenty’s was hit on a pedestrian Crossing by a
Heavy Goods Vehicle and then subsequently struck by a second lorry and two cars
none of the drivers stopped at the scene at Tulse Hill in South London.

Police officers believe that after being hit by an HGV while she was crossing
the road at a pedestrian crossing, the woman was subsequently struck by a second
lorry and two other cars, none of these drivers stopped. She was pronounced
dead at 7.21am and has not been formally identified but her family has been
informed. Information Credit London Evening Standard, Metro and Local Radio
Stations.

Today Thursday two lorry drivers were arrested. It is reported that she was on
the pedestrian crossing while the traffic lights on the main road were on green.
A few tips that could save a life in an increasing uncaring selfish society.

If you or your children are screen attached while walking alongside roads or
school entrances you need to review this and pay attention to your senses of
Sound and Vision unplug your ears from headphones.

Leave enough time to get to your destination.

Cyclists and Pedestrians wear reflective gear or light coloured clothes.

Drivers use headlights in the Dark and Fog be seen.

Abide by the Highway code.

Accidents are caused Prevention is better have a safe Christmas Pass this on
save a life or injury on your roads and Railways.

May her soul Rest in Peace
