The new model (930B) which I recently bought is *also* the same resolution. In fact I checked nearly all LCD's available and very few support higher resolutions (most 19" have 1280x1024 native resolution), and they are insanely expensive. I am not a graphic designer so cannot say whether it will suffice for graphics work etc. Playing DVD's is great and there is no ghosting whatsoever. Also playing high-end games is totally fine. Again no ghosting etc. on high resolution (on a 256MB GeForce FX 5200). I got my old 17" Samsung CRT (763DFX) plugged to the analog output of the same graphics card and I can notice the vast difference in quality between the two displays. Earlier i had reservations thinking CRT's are any day better than LCD's but now I think otherwise. You may google for the complete thread. Over allocating swap space is a BAD practice, but the effects are usually not as apparent as under allocating swap space, and such a system works most of the time, albeit often not as efficiently as it could do. The solution is to allocate the correct amount of swap space. How much is that? There is not really a simple answer, and it's certainly not as simple as twice the physical RAM. A run-away process on a server with too much swap may well cause the machine to become very unresponsive, whereas if the amount of virtual memory available had been little more than what was expected to be required, the run-away process would have terminated, allowing the problem to be fixed with minimal disruption to other services. Even for systems that don't *need* the extra memory space, swap can actually provide performance improvements by allowing unused memory to be replaced with often-used memory. For example, I have 57MB swapped right now. It allows me to instantly grep the kernel tree. If I turned swap off, each grep would probably take 30 seconds. The VM doesn't always get it right, and to make matters worse, desktop users don't appreciate their long running jobs finishing earlier, but *hate* having to wait a few seconds for a window to appear if it hasn't been used for 24 hours. swapping happens. A small swap (no more than the amount you accept being swapped out) ensures that the paging code can select the best page for eviction, rather than being forced to evict code. Swap serves another (often underrated) purpose: Graceful degradation. If you have a reasonably amount of swap space mounted, you will know you are running out of RAM because your system will become noticeably slower. If you have no swap whatsoever, your first warning will quite possibly be an application OOM killed or losing data due to a failed memory allocation. On a _desktop_ with 1 GB RAM, you can run swapless. That's very much possible. But i would recommend having a 512 MB swap partition. I am saying 512 MB because the negative effects of having too less swap are more visible than those of having too much swap. Also, you can always alter /proc/sys/vm/swappiness to your liking. Or maybe try Con Kolivas' autoregulated VM swap. patch or similar, which had pretty good feedback. I suggest the OP should figure out his workload before trying to work out the amount of swap space to go with the particular hardware configuration. Makes more sense. You dont need to worry about the decryption of dvds anymore. libdvdcss doesn't require the region of your drive to be set. Even with region mismatch, it reads DVDs. Cool, heh! Here's what the actual documentation of the library says about your hidden directory: Some environment variables can be used to change the behaviour of libdvdcss without having to modify the program which uses it. DVDCSS_METHOD: sets the authentication and decryption method that libdvdcss will use to read scrambled discs. Can be one of title, key or disc. DVDCSS_CACHE: specify a directory in which to store title key values. This will speed up descrambling of DVDs which are in the cache. The DVDCSS_CACHE directory is created if it does not exist, and a subdirectory is created named after the DVD's TITLE OR MANUFACTURING DATE. If DVDCSS_CACHE is not set or is empty, libdvdcss will use the default value which is "${HOME}/.dvdcss/" --- I got this from the libdvdcss developer documentation at: http://developers.videolan.org/libdvdcss/libdvdcss/doc/html/ BTW, some more information on DVDs. I use okle, xine, mplayer & totem to play DVDs. They play all DVD's flawlessly. Only problem i have faced is that okle needs a restart when you change DVDs. Hopefully that will be rectified soon. Transcode is another amazing software which provides fantastic tools to rip dvds. I have dvd::rip installed but there is this amazing perl script called V2divx which keeps everything very neat and simple. Converting the LOTR-III DVD (3 hrs 12 min long) to divx using V2divx (using transcode and ffmpeg) took only _three_and_a_half_hours (on an LFS system with 512MB RAM and 1800+ athlon XP) What I got was a neatly done 700MB divx file which I burned to a single cd! The symlink to /lfs/Mail is sufficient. On debian (reiserfs filesystem) all I need to do is mount the ext3fs for mails. That way, whichever system I boot, I can always check my mails. The whole thing is completely transparent. No synchronizing whatsoever. I use KDE 3.1.4 on BSD, KDE 3.1.3 on LFS and KDE 3.2 on debian. They have never created any problems. In fact I have even used the same folders with RH7.3's kmail. The only thing I have to check is what type of mailbox the user-agent is using, i.e. whether maildir or mbox. Kmail stores mails in maildir format by default. If you use mbox type mailboxes, you can even open the same with mutt (or for that matter any other s/w) without needing to do any changes except create a symlink. Of course you can set up most mail agents to use the type of mailboxes you prefer. Also, copying the kmailrc file to another distro saves me the trouble of setting up any account details. And finally... a symlink to .gnupg folder lets me use the same GPG settings and signatures. Nevertheless, sometimes things can go wrong. Running "grep 'CMIPCI' .config" on your 2.6 config shud give you something like: CONFIG_SND_CMIPCI=m (or a 'y' if built in) ALso check for a file named "snd-cmipci.ko" in the directory /lib/modules/"ur_kernel_ver"/kernel/sound/pci/. If its there just load the module and you neednt compile the kernel. Else you dont have support in the running kernel for the chip. What i want to know is whether anyone is running the game on a debian machine (unstable/testing). Or maybe if someone could give me a few tips on trying to solve the problem in a neat manner. Then enter the binary digits, get the hex output, and input the hex result using 0x prefix. I would still suggest to use the hex system. In fact, working with network packets, you should definitely use hex. Get used to it. Its far more convenient. Look, even my GPG key is shown in HEX! I have an old Asus A7VE motherboard which has been running for 3 yrs without any problem whatsoever. OTOH I am currently running an MSI board with KT333 chipset which has gone dead twice. The guys at Priya (the distributors) couldnt repair and I had to get a replacement (for free, of course). The new board also gave serious problems so I replaced it again (for free). [snip]... > > did an ls into /lib and found it does not exist there. > > what's going on? Source packages are installed in the /usr/local directory. So your libs are getting installed in /usr/local/lib and not /lib. Check the Makefile of the source package. You will find a line "prefix = /usr/local". This is basically done by all source packages so as not to mess around with the default system settings. /usr/local/ holds all such sources you compile and install. The system doesn't mix up between the two. Even after you did a make install, the package is still asking for the lib. That means your /usr/local/lib path is not searched for library files. You are required to add the path to search for library files. Read the INSTALL file that comes with the libsigc++-1.0.4 tarball. Also "./configure --help" will show you how to change the default install directories. Either you edit the Makefile ( not recommended as files might be erased etc) to install them in the system directories or pass parameters to the configure script. Also, when you install a source package, the rpmdb doesn't get updated. Installing a package with rpm -ivh *** updates the rpmdb so you can use rpm - -qa to query the BerkeleyDB database. So the database doesn't know about the new install you had done. Querying it is meaningless. Hence you didn't get any result. But its installed OK. You only have to give the proper links to the library files directory. I have compiled the sources of libsigc++ but haven't encountered this before. i.e. haven't seen /user directory in my filesystem. Did you at any point of time compile the sources by passing "--libdir=/user" or "--includedir=/user" ? (dont think so) or maybe edit the Makefile generated by configure and change "prefix=/usr/local" to "prefix=/user" ??? Anyways a suggestion to install the rogue rpm for k3d: try setting the library path to /usr/local/lib by doing this: # export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib Then install the rpm. Maybe that would work. Otherwise why don't you create an rpm (the spec file is included in the sources of libsigc++) and install it and see what happens. [ilugd] GRUB fails to load FreeBSD beyond 70GB
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I am not being able to boot into FreeBSD 5.1 with GRUB. I have an 80 GB Seagate Barracuda HDD with Debian (sid), Red Hat 8.0 and 9 installed. Grub's installed in the MBR and my /boot (where GRUB is located) is /dev/hda5 (within 8.3 GB though I have an Asus A7VE motherboard with a comparatively new BIOS). I boot around 8 different linux kernels with grub and they all load fine. Even kernels beyond 60 GB are loaded without any problem from ext3 partitions. (my debian /boot is beyond 60GB). Now I have a FreeBSD slice (hda3) beyond 72 GB. The problem is that my kernel doesn't boot from it. I have tried all possibilities but have reached no solution as yet. From the GRUB command-line during boot, when I do root (hd0,14), grub says partition is unknown type but gives the correct hex value. Seems it is not being able to recognize the UFS partition. After that the boot command fails. Interestingly the same version of GRUB boots my FreeBSD installation from a 40 GB Seagate HDD connected as primary slave. It boots without any problems. Here the same version of grub shows the correct partition type. I am wondering whether grub fails to recognize UFS partitions beyond 60-70 GB. Is this a known issue with grub? Re: [ilugd] Hotwire Client for Linux
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi All, I am glad some people are interested in the hotwire client for linux. I will share the code with you guys but i need a few more hours of coding to be able to present the program in a neat form. Right now the code is extremely debugged and some values are hardcoded. Distributing such premature code would be rather insulting. But I would like to share some details on it. Some input I would appreciate from those interested in the software is to send me a TCP dump of ethereal. From that I will be able to confirm my assumption that all the servers use the same port and similar time-outs. A simple way out to diagnose the server port I discovered is as follows: Type the following command at a shell prompt: echo "username~~passwd" | nc -v -v XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX 23400 replacing username with your loginname, passwd with your password, XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX with your gateway and leave the 23400 as it is - that is supposed to be the server's listening port. A transcript of the output on my comp is as follows: [EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# echo "username~~passwd" | nc -v -v XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX 23400 Warning: forward host lookup failed for hotwire-XX-XXX-del.hotwireindia.com: Unknown host hotwire-XX-XXX-del.hotwireindia.com [XXX.XXX.XXX.XX] 23400 (?) open welcome client sent 19, rcvd 14 [EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# This confirms that the server is listening on port 23400 awaiting client authentication connections (port is verified by the server if you get "welcome client" as a reply). Please send me the output of this command in a mail. I used the good old Ethereal to sniff and then filter the TCP packets going and coming from my gateway. From the data I deduced the rules used to keep the connection alive once it is established. After that the only thing left was to simulate a similar behaviour using sockets and signals. I decided to code in C,but the same thing can be coded in (p/P)erl or java easily. TODO: I will be writing a perl script to take info from the user and store it in a config file. This data will be used by the application to connect to the server in the gateway. Now a very important thing is that I have assumed all hotwire clients use the same windows binary provided by www.hotwireindia.com. The problem that might occur is that if it isn't, some settings will require a tweak. For example, the server port to which the client should connect. But that should not be a big issue as you can always run ethereal on windows with whatever client you are using, trace the server port, and change the value in the config file accordingly. If this seems to be difficult, you may send me the ethereal dump and I will do the rest. Also, if any of you guys have experience in designing front-ends, please tell me what platform should I use. I am planning to use Tcl-Tk but this will be finalised only after the code is verified on several machines. Any suggestions or volunteers?? [ilugd] Hotwire Client for Linux
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I remember a thread on hotwire client for linux that started in july. I browsed thru it again today and it didn't seem to have any concrete solution on the matter. Did any of you guys do anything? I have been myself using hotwire internet for the last 5 months on linux (redhat 8 on WINE). There seems to be no problem with wine running the MFC app (shittiest VC++ app I have ever seen!) on linux. I don't know how many of you have tried this solution. Now, why I am starting the thread again is because I wasn't pleased with the way the authentication client was working (seems to get disconnected often) and storing username , passwd, DNS etc. was a big hassle. So I wrote a socket application which does the same thing as the client. The code is in plain C and it is only command-line (will modify to include a config file to store persistent data). I have reduced the keep-alive packet timeout with the server and it seems the application is running better than the shitty windows client! Right now I am running the app and the results are very satisfactory (been up for an hour with no disconnection and avg speed of 10kbps). Now what I want to know is that how many hotwire internet users are there in this group who would be interested in this application. I started a few hours back and its already running by now. If anyone is interested, please mail me and let me know ASAP. I will develop it further, maybe adorn it with a GUI. If anyone is interested in developing, you are welcome. Re: [ilugd] Re: two questions
Hi, I finally got to know the reason for the mysterious occurrences regarding whois and ping. LL please give your valuable suggestions on this. There seems to be a rogue worm in the wild, aptly named [EMAIL PROTECTED] worm. Seems to infect TCP port 43 (thus affecting whois) and manipulate the server's NVT ASCII replies. The worm also injects malicious text into the ICMP packets resulting in the strange ping replies. The worm is Artificially Intelligent (mind you!) and seems to be able to do amazing things not discovered yet ... LL has already encountered one ... what about the others? You guys won't believe what happened when I tried to ping case.edu.pk again some time back. The transcript is shown below verbatim : -- $ ping www.case.edu.pk . Dude, what's your problem? Are you some kind of jerk? Or plain stupid? -- Man, THAT was offending! I was shocked. Now I am scared to ping the computer again lest I receive a plethora of abuses. I would be glad if someone helps me resolve this matter. Reports on the internet suggest that for the time being use the "who_the_hell_is" utility instead of whois. Also using ping with the --sco parameter (stands for Suppress Crazy Output) may curb the problem, though experts are not sure it works on all platforms. BTW did you guys know that PING stands for Packet InterNet Groper ? Regards, Bhaskar. --- LinuxLingam <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > > After the whois session, i tried ping. RE: [ilugd] IRQ probe
Hi, I presume you are using GRUB as your bootloader as it is installed by default in Red Hat 8. Open the /boot/grub/grub.conf file and modify the line similar to [these lines are from my grub.conf file, yours will be slightly different] ---> kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-14_custom_fs ro root=LABEL=/ to the following: kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-14_custom_fs ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=noprobe hdd=noprobe (The whole params are in a single line, no line breaks). That should do the work. In case you are using LILO, edit the lilo.conf file and add the line ---> append="hdc=noprobe hdc=noprobe" to the beginning of the file. Don't forget to run /sbin/lilo after the change to lilo.conf. Re: [ilugd] IRQ probe
Hi, pass hdc=noprobe hdd=noprobe as boot params to your kernel. This should stop the probe. BTW are you using alan's patches (with mandrake)? Seemed to be a problem somewhere with that. Kindly mention the kernel and patches you have installed. Your VIA ide controller's second channel seems to have no devices installed. Did you remove any devices recently from the secondary channel?? That might be a reason for the probe... Re: [ilugd] auto-startup a script, apps, *after* runlevel5
Hi LL, the .xinitrc file HAS to be an executable script. You can't run it if it isn't. It may be in any language, though people use simple shell scripts. It isn't any simple file containing app names. Xsession checks if the +x bit is set before running the script. It doesn't try to guess what language the .xinitrc file is written. You should mention that explicitly ( the shebang line is _MUST_ ). I am sending a sample .xinitrc I picked up from somewhere on the net last year (had modified it to work for me). Adjust accordingly. Googling helps a lot on this topic. -BOF-- #!/bin/sh userresources=$HOME/.Xresources usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap xclients=$HOME/.Xclients if [ -f $userresources ]; then xrdb -merge $userresources fi if [ -f $usermodmap ]; then xmodmap $usermodmap fi xterm +sb -fg green -bg black -C -geometry 45x6-200+8 -fn 6x13 -name console & # other programs add here ARG=$1 DEFAULTWM="startkde" if [ ! $ARG ]; then ARG=$DEFAULTWM fi elif [ $ARG = "kde" ]; then WM=startkde if [ $ARG = "gnome" ]; then WM=gnome-session elif [ $ARG = "after" ]; then WM=afterstep elif [ $ARG = "wm" ]; then WM=wmaker elif [ $ARG = "ice" ]; then WM=icewm else WM=$DEFAULTWM fi #finally, run the window manager, and redirect the stdout #and stderr to the file wm_out for debugging purposes exec $WM >& ~/wm_out --EOF--- now, all you have to do is type "startx kde" at the prompt to launch kde wm. Similarly for others. If you boot to runlevel 5, it will launch your default window manager. Remember that when you exit your window manager, X ends. So basically the last line in .xinitrc has to hang as long as you want your X session. Now there's a catch where certain settings are overridden after you start the window manager. To avoid this, use similar code in .xinitrc:: -shell code starts-- WM & pid_wm=$! xterm & xmms & ... ... wait pid_wm #do clean-up if necessary -shell code ends-- What the code does is that it runs the window manager, saves the pid of the process, then runs your programs. Finally it waits on the wm process. When you kill the wm, your X session ends. Hi, if you are using KDE, use the ~/.kde/Autostart folder. Put the script or a link to it and it should start after X loads. In GNOME, use ~/.Xclients-default to load your programs. If you use some other window manager, put something like this in your .xinitrc file: sleep 5 && /usr/local/bin/firestarter start Lemme know if it solved ur problem. Affly, Bhaskar.
