[JAWS-Users] JAWS reading in Word print envelopes

2016-04-08 Thread George Martinez CPA
I am using Windows 7, Word 2016 and JAWS 17.
I just went in to print an envelope and when I got to the Envelope/Label
window I noted that the return address was blank because I had just
installed a new hard drive and re-installed my Office 365.
So, I typed in my return address and while doing so I suddenly became aware
JAWS was not only reading the keystrokes but would read the line and when I
arrowed up it read ALL lines.
I went back up to the address I had just imported and to my delighted
surprise JAWS read the lines there also.
It looks like FS has finally been able to get this working for us.
Thanks FS.
George

Good afternoon, Jaws users list.
For all the iTunes users.
iTunes 12.3.317 is out today.
Funny thing when I opened my iTunes today, it told me that there was an update.
I tried like usual using Jaws 17, to go through the iTunes update normally in
which I have no issues doing to update iTunes.
Today however it failed twice.
So, I went to ninite.com and downloaded and ran it from there with no issues.
This seems to be my week with facing all kinds of issues.LOL.
Yesterday, I added some audio files to my OneDrive group download page.
Microsoft wanted me to use the groove music app to play them from OneDrive.
That was fine.
But they had a stupid ad trying to get me to buy it for all my devices.
They had a get started button, but know way to decline the dumb thing.
I had to recreate my OneDrive shared folders on my desktop giving them a
slightly different name.
I then copied all the tutorials from the old folders to the new ones.
I stopped sharing the old folders and deleted them.
I put the new OneDrive folders in sink with my computer.
I got a share a OneDrive link for both folders individually.
I then had to switch to Jaws 16 to make changes to my Yahoo group settings,
Jaws 17 still will not work doing this task.
Both my OneDrive group download pages are working correctly now.
Seems like Microsoft is trying to integrate all their programs together.
This is a challenge all by itself, we don’t need all the ads to complicate
things even more.
Are any of you who are using Jaws 17 to update iTunes having any problems?
Thanks for listening.
Now time for more coffee.

Now that works. I press shift+spacebar then just held down the shift key and
then down arrowed to the line I wanted.

2016-03-21 Thread George Martinez CPA
Mario,
Those are very cool JAWS commands I forgot about. Thanks.
BTW-Selecting the entire column does not suit for Ed'sexample of only
selecting 8 rows. In that case that GoTo command seems to be just what the
doctor ordered.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Three Excel shortcut keys

2016-03-21 Thread George Martinez CPA
Hi Mike Et Al,
I am not sure what version of Excel Ed is using but your first answer is not
accurate for 2013 & 2016.

Mike-
To insert a new line into the open spreadsheet, position the PC cursor on
the line after where you want the new line to be inserted. Then press alt+I
and then r.
George-This must be ALT H I, then R. This may not require the "H" in 2010
or earlier.

To read a cell character by character, position the pc cursor on the sell
you want to read and press and hold down the JAWSkey and press the SayWord
key twice quickly. For the desktop keyboard layout, that would be hold down
the numpad insert key and press numpad 5 twice quickly. For the Laptop
keyboard layout press and hold the caps lock key and press k twice quickly.
Or if you have a numpad, you can use the desktop layout keys as well. To
read a cell character by character with the arrow keys would require routing
the JAWS cursor to the cell you want to read and making the JAWS cursor
active. This can be done by pressing Rout JAWS to PC.
Mike - this is a very cool JAWS command, thanks.

To select entire lines to copy, Place the PC cursor on the first line you
want to copy and press Cap+space to select the entire line. Then while
still holding down the JAWSkey press down arrow to the last line. Now all
the lines including the first and last lines will be selected.
Mike-This is also very cool, again, thanks.

Ed,
Try hitting ALT + H I in quick succession then the R. This is a ribbon
command that I have also placed in my QAT for convenience. I use it all the
time in 2016 and did so in 2013.
I do not know of any command to highlight the entire row as I arrow down. I
doubt if there is such since the row is composed of individual cells.
Mario's suggestion of using the GoTo command to highlight the entire group
is a great one.

George and anyone else, I learned of another way to select a block of
cells. lets say you know a block of text that you want to copy, move,
perform functions on, etc. and you know it ranges from b1 to h9, press
the goto function, usually f5, at least in Excel 2010, and type in the
range b1:h9 and press enter. the range should be selected to do whatever
function you want. this was a function in Excel 2003 and it carried over
into later versions, but don't know if it is mentioned or if Excel users
know about it. cool!

2016-03-21 Thread George Martinez CPA
1. Shortcut key to insert a line.
ALT + H,i,R
THERE ARE SEVERAL GOOD FUNCTIONS IN THE ALT + H,I AND IN ALT + H,D

2. Is there a way to read numbers in a cell one number at a time with
the arrow key without doing the F2 key?
I ALWAYS USE F2

3. How to select a group of lines to copy. Another words say line 1
through 8?
FROM THE TOP LEFT OF THE TARGET DATA
HOLD DOWN SHIFT KEY AND ARROW DOWN 7 TIMES TO HIGHLIGHT ALL 8 CELLS IN THAT
COLUMN
THEN STILL HOLDING DOWN THE SHIFT KEY ARROW TO THE RIGHT AS MANY COLUMNS AS
DESIRED. JAWS WILL SPEAK THE HIGHLIGHTED AREA AS YOU ARROW.

2016-03-19 Thread George Martinez CPA
It has been way long since I worked with columnar data in Word but it seems
that I could use F6 to toggle between the columns. Page down might even work
to get to the second column.
If all else fails End Down to the bottom of the first column then arrow down
and it should wrap over to the top of the second column.

Thanks for this, however I am not looking to create tables but text columns on
the Page so it will look sort of like the newspaper. I know how to create the
columns but not how to navigate between them with jobs.

Hi,

Does anyone know of a text editor that works well with Windows 7 and JAWS
17? I called Technical Support and was told that UltraEdit is broke with
JAWS, which I found out, and Notepad++ also will not work with JAWS. They
had no suggestions. Really! And a text editor is a basic thing. I use it
for my job all the time. This just came up because I got a new computer and
can't find the serial number for my old UltraEdit, so thought I'd load their
current one. But that doesn't work well at all. I also have a note out to
UltraEdit to see if I can get a serial number for my old version.

Well, if anyone has suggestions for a good text editor, please let me know.

Thank you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Formatting columns in word then getting jaws to read the columns

2016-03-01 Thread George Martinez CPA
Kimber,

Adding a little to what Teresa said see below.

There are many variations of this but here is one way.

1. Press ALT and then arrow to the right to Insert and press space bar.
2. Now TAB over until you hear Tables, it will be 3 or 4 TABS.
3. Press Space Bar and it brings you into a grouping of boxes. you will be
in the top left box. JAWS will say something like "1x" which is your row
number.
4. Now ARROW down an JAWS will say "2x" then "3x" and so on. Arrow own to
5.
5. Now arrow to the right twice. This will give you a beginning Table 5
rows long and 3 columns across. Press Enter.
6. This brings you back into your Word document and you are in the upper
left cell of your new Table.

If you want to mess with the width of your columns then from here press your
Applications key.
7. Arrow down to Table Properties & press enter.
8. You land in the Table properties TAB where you can set many parameters
for your table.
9. ALT + U moves you to the Columns TAB and then ALT + R takes you to the
Row properties TAB. There are also TABS for Cell and All Text.
10. In the Column TAB TAB once an you land on Preferred width an it is
checked by default.
11. TAB once an you land in the Spin Box to set your preferred column width.
12. I forget the keystroke to move between TABS but you could use that to
move through the TABS as well.

This sounds a little complicated but like most things it is fairly straight
forward and gets easier the more you practice at it. Don't be afraid to
create tables modify them then dump the document and begin again until you
get just what you want.

Adrian,

Thanks for the link. I did some poking around but couldn't find any
reference to purchasing individual textbooks. And a subscription for
$500 is way more than I want or need. I do a lot of work with Word and
would definitely be interested in that book in particular.

Thanks again.

I use maxemail.com to send and receive faxes, you send them as email
attachments and receive them the same way. After receiving them, you can
either print them for sighted assistance, or scan them with Open Book or
similar. They charge $24 for three month with I think 100 outgoing pages
per month, I have never exceeded it, and they give you a fax number in the
area code of your choice.

Hi Alana,
I do not know all of the technical reasons why but I believe you will have a
lot of difficulty using JAWS 14 with Office 2016.
I have Windows 7 and had difficulty using JAWS 15 with Office 2013 until FS
made some serious updates.
Now with JAWS 17 I have some issues with 2016 but they are getting better as
FS updates.
Unless someone on this list knows the exact answer to your question I would
call FS before you move up to Office 2016 with JAWS 14.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Caret browsing

2016-02-06 Thread George Martinez CPA
It is likely that FS can add a video feature to JAWS however...
For the last 10-12 years I have used both a screen reader & screen enlarger.
In spite of what FS tells you they do not work & play well together.
When I first began I used Zoomtext with JAWS and they fought constantly. FS
tech support kept telling me that both MAGic & JAWS were developed by the
same developer & of course they would not fight. So, I switched from
Zoomtext to JAWS.
They do conflict; not as bad as with Zoomtext in the mix but they do
conflict.
That is most likely why they are not anxious to add a video feature to JAWS.

You would think that since they can add speech output to Magic, they could

Making JAWS easier to follow by a sighted person is something we have been

Re: [JAWS-Users] More testing of Jaws 17

2016-02-04 Thread George Martinez CPA
Jim,
I am not in Windows 10 but Windows 7 with JAWS 17 and Office 365.
I have experienced the 10 second or more silence in JAWS 17. I at first
assumed it was due to having both MAGic and JAWS in the same machine which,
of course, run perfectly together.
However, I am seeing some instances on this list of the instances of JAWS
going silent.
I just switched to JAWS 16 and updated to the 16.0.4468 update.
So far I believe it is executing more quickly but time will tell if it
eliminates the pauses. More later.

Good morning Jaws Users group.
Last night I was doing research and other things.
So, I started out using the latest Jaws 16, and then switched to using the
latest Jaws 17.
Let me know if any of you have noticed the following intermittent lockup of
Jaws 17.
This intermittent lockup of Jaws 17 has been doing this from the beginning
of the Jaws 17 release.
For example.
I had the following programs and windows opened.
Bookshare, F S Reader 2.0, WLM, personal folders, and on occasion my
external back up drive.
Using Jaws 16, latest release no issues.
Using Jaws 17, latest release, it froze up intermittently six times or more
in a little over an hour.
The freeze lasted for 10 to 15 seconds, this is very frustrating.
For example:
When going into the search edit box on Bookshare, Jaws 17 intermittently
freezes for 10 seconds or so, you can do nothing until it speaks.
When pressing Control+N, for a new message in WLM, same thing.
When pressing Control+R, to reply to a message, same thing.
When pressing the escape key in F S Reader 2.0, to go from my alphabetical
list of books back to the current book, same thing.
When pressing ALT+f4 to close a program, or pressing Control+W, to close a
window, same thing.
When pressing ALT+Tab to switch From one program to another, same thing.
When in the settings area, going from one screen to another, same thing.
Again, this is an intermittent Jaws lockup, very difficult to reproduce with
any regularity!
But never-the-less, this is a very frustrating issue with Jaws 17.
Again, this has been this way since the first release of Jaws 17.
This is why I went back to using the latest Jaws 16 on my w-10 computer.
Do any of you use Jaws 17 older version or the latest version, regularly on
your w-10 computer?
Have you encountered this Jaws 17 intermittent lockup, which last for 10 to

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using GoToMeeting

2016-01-28 Thread George Martinez CPA
Hi David,
Not good news...
I logged in to my Citrix WebEx webinar a few minutes ago and JAWS did great
getting in.
However, once I arrived at the initial Presenter screen I was unable to get
to the Chat button and when I used INS + F7 it told me that I could only use
that while on a page on the internet, Duh.
So, after several minutes of trying every thing I knew I could see the Chat
button but could not access it with JAWS!
I believe that once the Chat button is activated that the Chat box and maybe
even the polling may be accessed with key strokes.
I have numerous webinars in February-March and will continue experimenting
using only JAWS.

2016-01-26 Thread George Martinez CPA
Hi David,
I am in the process of using this online teaching tool by Cytrix. I am
taking webinars put on by Thompson Reuters.
I have just enough sight so that with MAGic I can navigate the page. While
I know that there is a Chat link that I have accessed with JAWS I know what
you mean about the Chat box and polling.
I am taking another webinar this Thursday so I will log in a half hour early
and during breaks putter around with it without MAGic and see if I can
figure a way to at least use the Chat because if you cannot get to the
polling with JAWS at least that way you can enter the answers in the Chat
box for credit which is what I do.
Over half of the instructors ask the Host to read the polling questions and
if yours do that I think you might be able to input your answer on the
polling. I will see if I am correct on that & let you know.

Not sure what you mean "ftp" file. FTP generally stands for File Transfer
Protocol which is a method to move a file from one computer to another.
I use FTP regularly to transfer files from another computer while I am

Here’s hoping that perhaps one day sooner rather than later JFW can be made to

I hope that helps someone.

reading the to and from address areas at all. Can anyone else reproduce this
behavior; or has anyone found any work arounds to improve the performance in
this dialog area?
thanks in advance.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Query about JFW reading a dialog inMicrosoft office2016

2015-12-08 Thread George Martinez CPA
I had noticed this issue in 2013 and when I was taking an FS webinar on Word
Dan Clark noted it to the class that JAWS did not read in the Adressee or
Return Address boxes and blamed it on Microsoft.
I use that function a good bit and it for sure is passed onto 2016.

Hi,
So are you saying that this is an issue with Microsoft's design not screen
reader functionality then?
As System Access performs flawlessly in this dialog currently. I'm just
curious then if it is a Microsoft short coming then why it is working better
in this instance than Jaws is.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Can i get step by step instructions for converting m4afiles to mp3 files?

2015-12-02 Thread George Martinez CPA
Hi Mitch,
I tried nee converter and it was not very accessible and free for one day.
So, I went back to Mr Google and found "Free M4a to MP3" by Maniac Tools.
Very easy to download and install. I had 2 M4a files in the first folder so I
highlited them both and it converted them very quickly in the same operation.
My Windows Media Player simply spits out these M4a files and opens iTunes and
begins playing a Christmas Carrol off my list.
Thanks for the tip.
George
PS-The converted MP3 files plays very clear.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 16 and internet explorer

2015-11-21 Thread George Martinez CPA
There is another practical side to IE9. I was using it until about a year
ago & upgraded to IE11 when one day BofA rejected my login until I upgraded.
More & more web sites are doing that with HTML 5 in wider use.
I know for myself that JAWS 16 "works" with IE9 but for me the question is
where can I not go with IE9?

Hi all,
I forgot to mention that you do not even need to have dropbox to download
the tutorial from the link I gave you. You don't have to know how to use it
or anything like that. All you guys need to do is enter on the link in the
email, and a page will come up. Go to almost to the bottom of the page and
there will be a download link, and press enter on that. Now, you can save it
where you want on your computer. That is it. If you guys want to learn how
to use Drop Box, I could teach you that in my next tutorial. Take care, and
I hope you can download it and all will learn a lot about Chrome. I am now
using it as my default browser. It is an hour audio tutorial and I go over
all the basics of Chrome from browsing, to saving and getting to book marks,
saving pages in different formats, downloading and saving files, and much
more. Let me know how it goes downloading it.

of Chrome like browsing, downloading and saving files, saving pages in
different formats, and I take you through all of the options in the Chrome
menu. I hope you learn and try Chrome, because it is very fast, great when
streaming, and it is more accessible than it has ever been. Here is the
link. Just enter on the link, and a page will come up. Arrow down to almost
the bottom of the page, and enter on the download link and you can save it
to your computer. Here is the link.

Hi all,
I forgot to mention that you do not even need to have dropbox to download
the tutorial from the link I gave you.

Hi all,
Yesterday, I sent all of you a Drop Box link to a tutorial that I did on
Google Chrome. I am not sure it got through, because I just read that the
list was shut down. This is an hour tutorial that goes over all the basics
of Chrome like browsing, downloading and saving files, saving pages in
different formats, and I take you through all of the options in the Chrome

David, If you again find that you need to turn the list off to make a point,
or for any other reason, may I suggest that you post a warning before you do
it. I had just made a change in my membership so, when I did not get any
emails from the list I thought that it was something that I had done wrong.
I worked trying to get the list back for quite a while. If I had known that
you felt you needed to close down the list I would have felt better waiting
for you to turn it on again. I, personally, think that you do a good job
running this list. I can only wonder how much time it takes you each day.
But this list is a helpful, -no nonsense place where I can come and learn
about Jaws. I want to thank you for all of the work you put in to make this
a good place to come to to learn about Jaws. I think that the vast majority
of people on the list feel just as I do. It is a shame that one or two
rotten apples can ruined the pie. As for me, I say, Thank you. LeDon.

2015-11-05 Thread George Martinez CPA
I am using Win 7 Pro with JAWS 17 and Office 365 2016.
I have some issues in both Outlook and Excel. A couple of my issues are due
to the fact that I am also using MAGic 13. In spite of what FS says MAGic
does not nicely play well with JAWS in all instances.
I have not experienced the "blank" issue in the Inbox but I do get it when I
press F1 for help frown.
This weekend I want to experiment on these issues to determine if they are
caused by MAGic or JAWS or a combination. I will report here on issues I
find that are JAWS related.

Only way for me to stay in touch with my kids and others as they simply do
not email anymore.

Hi George,
I was looking at the
6 addresses you posted at the end of your email.,
And they looked familiar.

If you add the 10 digit telephone number of a cell phone before the @

I am very sure you can text a message to a friend cell phone number and send
it with alt S..

And they can reply you right back as an attachment.

I use that trick once in a while still to text from my pc.
And have saved the cell number as a contact only for that perpose.

Hi Jaws users list.
I am enjoying playing with Customizing W-10, here is a new discovery.
I just discovered the pinning of items to the Quick access, and pinning this
quick access shortcut to the Start area.
I will do an audio tutorial on this next week.
For example:
Press Enter on your, This PC icon on the Desktop.
Go down to your C: drive, highlight it, do not press enter.
Shift+Tab, to the, This PC treeview.
Press the Home key, to go to the top.
You will hear, Quick Access open or closed.
While you are on that, press the Application key, go down to, Pin to Start,
press Enter.
So, as you go down through your computer items in this treeview.
On any drive, folder, file, and other stuff, highlight an item you wish to
add to Quick access, press the Application key, go down to, pin to quick
access, press enter.
So, you can have a list of many shortcuts to Drives, folders, files and
other stuff pinned to Quick access.
You can pin Quick Access to the Start area, this automatically, makes a
group header called Quick Access under your live tiles region.
Press enter on the Quick access shortcut, in the start area, this will open
a list of everything you have pinned to Quick access.
You can use first letter navigation in this list, very handy, and a fast way
to get to all your important things on your computer from one list.
This is fantastic! another way to personalize your W-10 computer.

David, do you know how long can a session last until the connection is
terminated? I might have to initiate a connection to help someone but
don't know how long the session is going to take.

[JAWS-Users] "Helpful" Hints in Excel 2016

2015-10-27 Thread George Martinez CPA
Using Windows 7, JAWS 17 beta and Excel 2016.
I do a lot of combining Sheets into one workbook. When I type H+O, R to
rename the sheet Excel is throwing up a "helpful" hint or selection and when
I continue to type as though I am typing the sheet name it errors out.
How do I shut off those helpful hints. It may actually be more than a hint
and may well be some type of formatting choice. Either way I want to shut
it off.
Thanks,
George

Re: [JAWS-Users] A Basic question regarding multiple email attachments.

2015-10-26 Thread George Martinez CPA
Hi Justin,
Not sure if Win 10 makes any difference but when I used Outlook 13 which is
very much the same as 10 once I opened the email with attachments I would
SHIFT + Tab where JAWS 16 announced "Message" then I would CTRL + RIGHT
ARROW and that would put focus on the first attachment and JAWS would read
it to me. I could then repeat CTRL + RIGHT ARROW and it would read me the
2nd attachment, and so forth.
Once I was on the attachment I wanted I could use Applications key to save
or save all or print etc.

Hello List,

Using Windows 10 and Outlook 10, I continue to be frustrated when trying to
read the titles when I receive multiple attachments.

I press Ok on the first attachment and then shift tab so read the title
before saving it. I then press OK and save it to documents to to a specific
folder in documents.

When I go to the second attachment and press shift down arrow and then Ok, I
don't see the title of the next attachment.

I'm sure there is a series of steps in this process using specific keyboard
commands, the shift and arrow keys etc.

I would appreciate it if someone here could present the steps in the process
for saving multiple attachments to reduce this frustration allowing me to
master one more function Using JAWS and my not so technical brain. .

Best,

Justin

Changing your Folder Options in w-10:
The “Old folder Options” is now called, File Explorer Options.
So for an easier way of finding it, do the following.
1. Press enter on the Start button.
2. Start typing, folder,
3. Press down and up arrow, look for File Explorer Options, Control Panel,
press enter.
4. By default, the first item is set to Quick Access.
Down arrow one time to change it to, This PC.
5. Press Control+Tab, go to, reset Folder Options press the Spacebar, Confirm
again with the Spacebar, this will apply changes to all folders.
6. Tab to the OK button and press enter.
7. Now, when you Press Windows key+e, this keystroke will open your, This PC,
instead of Quick access.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2016

2015-09-23 Thread George Martinez CPA
Mike,
I really like my Outlook 2013 and it is very powerful for all my business
and personal needs.
I have suggested this before on other lists and received a tepid return,
possibly due to blind people being low on funds or having a "jumping over a
dollar to grab a penny" attitude but Dan Clark does a terrific webinar at FS
on Outlook. When I took it the cost was $29 but now is about $70 but still
a huge bargain for 3 1.5hour webinars on Outlook where you can download the
class audio and a plethora of materials. He does the same for Excel and
Word.
The other thing to consider here is that JAWS 17 is still on the verge of
release and even after it releases it always takes FS an update or two to
figure out the latest Office Suite and that it is just the way it is and
always has been.
So, all of the little niggly things with JAWS and the new Office 365 are to
be expected and will mostly go away after an update or two into JAWS 17.

Dan,

I am not really an Outlook user, as I haven't used it in many years. I have
been considering returning back to it however. I really need to read some
tutorials or other training material to be able to understand how the
program works now. So, I really cannot answer your concerns at this time. I

would suggest this, on the Office.com web site, you can click on the "See
what's new" link, and it gives you a quick run down on what the major
changes have been, plus, it has some links that lead to training materials
and other support resources. Maybe some of this information would be helpful

to you to see what the differences are and how to address them.

Yes, I have fooled around with it a bit, plus I asked before installing the
upgrade if this was an issue, and Microsoft Accessibility told me that there
were no issues between JAWS 16 and Office 2016. So far as I can tell, they
are telling the truth. The Office applications actually seem to load faster
than the Office 2013 apps did, and no hiccups so far. I created one new
workbook in Excel2016, and opened and edited some other types of documents
with Word, Powerpoint, and Access with no trouble. After you install the

Hi George,

Well, yes I did sort of manually upgrade it. I signed into Office.com,
clicked on the link that indicated that it was where you could get the new
version, clicked on the link on this page that read "Upgrade Now", or
something similar, and I got the Run or save dialogue. I opted to run the
installation, and it then installed itself. It was just that easy. Once the
installation completed, I did think that something had not gone just right,
because I was still showing the Office 2013 applications in my start menu.
But, after a minute, the computer restarted itself, and all of this changed
to Office 2016. You will have to go to your desktop and delete all of the
old shortcuts for these apps, and create new ones from the Program Files
folder, or from the menu you get when you right click an empty spot on the
desktop, and then select "Personalize".

Hi.
Smart navigation and navigation quick keys are two different things.

Smart navigation is a glorified version of the old screen layout web
document presentation mode.

If you browse a site that has links placed on a line along with other
text, such as a link in the middle of a paragraph, without smart
navigation it places the link on it's own line and interrupts the flow
of the text. Visually the link is just part of the text in a different
color that you can click on, but to jaws the link is on it's own line so
you can arrow down to it and press enter. With smart navigation however,
jaws tries to read the link among the text around it just as it is shown
visually. It's more than just that, but this was a quick stab at
explaining the point of smart navigation. The idea is to allow you to
continue having efficient access to the web while giving you a more
accurate representation of the layout of the document.

Navigation quick keys is what you thought yes, smart navigation is as
I've explained here, and not the same thing as navigation quick keys.

Hi All,

I received an email from a work colleague that has an attachment. I
know this because outlook tells me there's an attachment as does the
text of the email. But no matter what I do, I can't locate the
attachment to either open or save it. There's no attachment tab and
when I explore with the jaws cursor there is no attachment either at
the top or the bottom of the email.

I've gotten other emails like this and I assume the inaccessibility
has something to do with how the sender attaches the document. But I'm
not certain what method produces this result.

Can anyone help? This attachment is the template for a report I need
to prepare, so it's pretty important that I gain access to it.

Thanks,

You are going to have to use the JAWS cursor in there.
Good old Microsoft has made it so that that area does not read with JAWS.
In the FS Word training Dan Clark, ever the optimist, says, and we cannot

I cannot get JAWS to read the delivery address or return address, in the
printing process.

Here is what I do and what I hear:

1. Have a word document with the address.

2. Get the cursor in the middle of the address.

3. Alt plus the letter M. I hear: upper ribbon mailings tab

4. Strike the letter E, for envelope. I hear: Delivery Address edit.
However, it does not read out loud the address. Nor can I arrow up or down
and hear anything.

Tab to the return address. I hear: Return address edit. It does not read
out loud the return address nor can I arrow through it.

Tab to the print button, and strike the space bar. The envelope prints
precisely.

So, my bottom line question is how do I get JAWS to read the mailing
address and return address? Using JAWS 16.4350 and MS Word 2013.

Thanks. Neil Towery

Neil,
I just verified in my Windows 7, Word 2013, and JAWS 16 and indeed your
description is right on the money.
The trick is to adjust your fonts on the Delivery address while in Word
and the same for your return address the first time before copying into the
windows/labels window.
I just verified that you will land before the first letter of the first word
in the first sentence in both windows and you can highlight the text using
normal movements and delete and replace with something else if you wish.

Re: [JAWS-Users] increasing cell height with jaws

2015-08-23 Thread George Martinez CPA
Mike,
No problem. The problem is/was in how I interpreted the question. I think he
was asking how to increase the size of just one cell.
Anyway, the whole thing is a tempest in a teapot since in 99 cases out of 100
it does no harm to simply increase the row height or even to increase the Font
size which will accomplish the same visual result.

Hi George,

I believe this is correct. I don't think that you can resize only one cell,
it is going to have to be the entire row or column. I don't recall ever
changing just one cell. Sorry if my answer was misleading.

I looked in Excel help for 2013 and a search for cell height produced a

Tom, You can open the Home tab and shift tab upwards 13 times or until you
find Cells group box, Format... and press enter on this. You will be given

the option to either type in a number for the height of the cell, or to Auto

fit the sell height. The Column width is here a as well along with some
other cell formatting stuff. Hope this helpx.

Re: [JAWS-Users] increasing cell height with jaws

2015-08-22 Thread George Martinez CPA
Hi Tom,

To the best of my knowledge there is not a way to raise the height of a cell
without increasing the height of the row.

I did try to increase the Font to 84 points and it did so within that cell
and the font was still the same size as it was before. However, the row
height was increased to accommodate the 84 point cell; similar to the way it
would look when turning on text wrap when the row width has been made less
than the text in a header.
I also searched the Excel cell height functions and there was nothing
presented that did not involve increasing the height of the entire row.

In Excel, to avoid trusting all attachments, I use ALT + F, I, E for each
document. This command also works in Word or as advised you can make it for
all or selective recipients.

You can in Office visit the trust center and approve all docs from a
specific source if you get a lot of docs from this person. I will have
to search for the path to the trust center if you want follow up.

Additionally, I've found that trying to save a protected doc results in
a Word/Excel dialog seeing if you want to remove protection. Click yes
and the process is quicker than using the ribbon menus.

There is a way to turn off protected view for Word documents.

 2. Press T to highlight Trust Center.
 3. Press Tab until you get to Trust Center Settings and press Enter.
 4. Use up and down arrow keys to highlight Protected View.
 5. You can tab to four checkboxes, and you can uncheck the ones that you
feel are safe to uncheck. Perhaps the last one regarding data execution
 should remain checked.

This is what I have done at my work location and all seems to be well.

Microsoft Office 2010 treats imported documents in a special way if they
originate on the Internet. The document is opened, but is placed in
something called Protected View. Jaws will not read a document in that
 state.

In this mode, if you use a Say All command, a message appears explaining
what Protected View is and why the document was handled that way.

To change from Protected View to an editable version, press Alt F and
arrow
down to a button called Allow Editing and press Enter on that option.
Once the document has been altered in this manner, it will read normally.

It is recommended that the document be saved in the new editable format
since it will not remain in that condition if the user exits the document.

 From: Scorpio4Ever

You can fix this easily by going into trust center settings, then arrow
down
to protected view and tabbing to the various file types in that dialog
box,
then, for each file type, unchecking all of the check boxes.

It would appear that Jaws is not reading the dialog box correctly, and so
it
may read as check the box to allow editing, however, this is not the case,
and the boxes must be unchecked. Make sure you arrow down the list of
file
types, then tabbing to the checkbox to uncheck it.

The checkboxes should read as Save and Open, though only some of them
have the open checkbox, but again, you'll have to do this for all file
 types.

 Hope this helps.

hi,

you do realise since win8 you no longer require third party av.
microsoft have re-designed the built in security from start to end. for
example, enabling enhanced protection mode in internet explorer creates a
sandbox around the os. many articles have tested this statement and explain
that the core intergrated security is more powerful and effective in av
protection than the third party counter parts.when you install third party av
these disable the built in security features.

i have been running win8 for over 2years without third party av and touch wood
no viruses and windows is running much faster and quiter.

the biggest hurdle the average user has to overcome is the notion that having
no third party av does not mean your pc is more vulnerable to attacks.
microsofts intergrated security provides protection in the background, heck
they don’t even place the defender icon in the system tray anymore.

I do not ever remember seeing a way to remove the table (borders) and

jumble without the table to hold the spacing.
However, there is a way to make the table lines invisible both on screen and

[JAWS-Users] Excel entering text narrative that crosses columns

2015-07-08 Thread George Martinez CPA
I am using Excel 2013.
I am formatting and making pretty a budget proposal for a blind friend
using the little bit of vision I have.
The budget uses Columns A through G.
He wants to place a Budget Narrative at the bottom.
I have entered his narrative. If I manually spread it across columns A thru
G it takes up 5 rows but it is pretty ragged on the right side.
I seem to remember there is a way to enter text like that that crosses
numerous columns and rows and have Excel display it and even justify it
within that area?
Has anyone used this function and could help me out?
Thanks,

I have a Word document with names addresses that I use for envelopes
labels.
Highlight your name and address in a Word document then perform the steps he
outlined.
JAWS/Word will land you in the address box and it will not read you date in
that box.
ALT + E will take you to the line above and activate you want to do an
envelope.
ALT + L same thing for labels.
Once you have told it labels or envelope then you can tab around until you
get to PRINt and it speaks.

spacebar on the Find Next button, use shift key with F6 and read the
position with Alt and delete. You don't have to keep jumping between the
panes using shift with F6 to move to the document and F6 to move back to
 the
navigation pane. Once you find an occurrence of what you are finding and
move to the document pane you can just use CTRL with page down to find the
next occurrence or CTRL with page up to find a previous occurrence and
 check
position with the Alt and delete key.

If you are wanting to use replace option but not the replace all
choice
then you first use CTRL with H to move to the page of the dialog where you
can do replacements. It is a good idea to start at the top of the
document
first. After typing in what you want to find and what you want it
replaced
with you can use Alt with F to activate the Find Next button. Press
 escape,
use Alt+Delete to get position, and then use CTRL with H again and use the
Alt+R to do the replacing. You can then use escape key, find position
 using
alt with delete, use CTRL with H followed by Alt with R to replace it or
 alt
with F to find the next occurrence.

In Word 2013 there doesn't seem to be a way to switch between the
 navigation
pane and the document pane the say you can if just finding something.
 Also,
in the dialog box the Alt+delete only gives pixel position for the control
in focus so you have to be in the navigation pane to get the position of
something using Alt key with delete key.

 Take care.

[JAWS-Users] Accessible dictionary

to use the JAWS cursor?

Well I am prehistoric then because it was 50 years ago this coming September
that I started learning to type on a manual typewriter.

No I don't! As far back as I can remember the tab key on the computer was in
the same place as the typewriter, another pre-historic relic.

Of course, JAWS wasn't in the picture then, but do any of you remember when the
tab was where the function keys are now?

Yes, We've all been reduced to Ribbons, and they're here to stay. Now it'd
be nice if there were a tab key on the right of the keyboard as well as
just the one on the left! (It'd also protect JAWS from being swore at so
much in dialogues as well by users!)

 I understand, less is better.

Doesn't change the fact that they are here to stay.

I will admit though it drives me bonkers to tab a thousand times but if
one remembers all of the keytips or use the qat to their advantage then
all is better than before. The qat, allows 9 items I think, so pick your
favorite 9. Also, I think you can create your own ribbon with all of your
favorite keytips aalso to avoid all of that tabbing.
I think with enough time and patience one can modify it to their liking to
 getter done.

But you have to remember more shortcut keys, and more often, than in the
past! It takes longer to move around the ribbons.

this is true while the drop down menus were replaced by the ribbons the
shortcut keys still work, so if you remember the shortcut keys your fine!

I think Landa nailed it. As Microsoft Office became more complex, pull
down menus did not enable most users to see more than a few controls
without going to sub menus. Hence, the ribbon, which had been in use in
other software products, was adapted to replace much of the top line
apparatus. This said, not all ribbon controls are logical nor highly
visible either. e.g. page renaming in Excel comes under a layer called
cells. Fortunately, hot keys perform the most common functions in office,
bypassing the need to overheat the tab keys.

If you press tab, you will be in the choices for that ribbon. The tab
key, in my opinion, is the most reliable way to move from item to item
on the lower ribbon. Control right and left arrow is supposed to move
you from group to group on the ribbon so that you can move through the
 choices

After you type CTRL + P it is easier to SHIFT TAB about 3 times.

Hi Guys,

How do you print the email message in Outlook 2010. I am having a brain fart
this morning. I hit the crtl+P key but then I could not find the print
button.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Ed

Re: [JAWS-Users] Speaking of Office 2010?

2015-06-25 Thread George Martinez CPA
I was the same way when I transitioned to Office 2013 I also changed from XP to
Windows 7. For about 3 months I was one lost puppy.
Then I took the 3 FS webinars on Outlook, Excel, and Word and spent some
one-on-one time with a trainer.
I have always liked keystrokes all the way back to WordStar and Lotus1-2-3 and
Office is full of them.
I discovered the Quick Access Toolbar QAT in the webinars and combined with my
memorized keystrokes I get along great now with Office 2013.

I hated the ribbons the first time I was introduced to them.

Another list member here was actually my trainer for it and if memory serves, I
think he wanted to pull out his hair lol
However, I hated it because it was new but after I left his training
sessions, I was good and after a few, I loved the ribbons and I can do without
menus.

People state the ribbons are confusing and cannot find what they are looking
for, I'm the opposite. When I use something with menus, I'm like, ribbons!
Where are the ribbons!

the ribbon menus is suppose to add more security however they are suppose
to accomplish that. I dislike the ribbon interface as well.
I think microsoft is seeing how complex they can get.
the ribbon interface is basically for power users. not all of us are
 power users.

Where in the world did Office 2010 and other newer programs come up with
this ribbon idea? It makes no sense to me. I just got some directions,
 keep
them handy and follow them. I guess it makes sense to somebody.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] another marathon session with Microsoft

This was quite interesting. For two days there was a critical security
update for MS office 2010 that would fail every time. Finally I called
 the
accessibility support team. After two attempts they started running some
diagnostic and clean up tools. One of the first questions asked was if I
ever ran any registry cleaners. When I told him no he was glad to hear
 that.
Then he tried it again and it failed. He then wanted to uninstall office
2010 and had quite a few problems. He ran some fix it tools and finally
 was
able to uninstall it. We reinstalled and it took a long time to apply 39
critical updates. Every thing there is now working fine. As soon as it
 was
completed I created a restore point and started a system backup. We were
 on
the phone for almost 2 hours.
