[JAWS-Users] reading columns

2016-09-10 Thread Mario Brusco
I am trying to help someone I know. She uses JAWS 17 and/or Magic 13.
her message follows:

"I find that my JAWS reads across a webpage or other document so that,
say, if there are three columns of text, the reading winds up in making
no sense at all.

How can I set JAWS to read one column top to bottom then start the next
column?"

I don't know if the columns are laid out in a table or not. I am waiting
for acknowledgement. meanwhile, any ideas?

Teresa, the point in what I said was that using the task manager will
not permanently prevent the program from starting when Windows starts.

Hi Mario,

There is a 'startapps' tab in task manager; you get to it with control
tab or with right o left arrows being on the tabs.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws , safe mode and windows 8.1
Check out the following link;

Safe Mode is a special Thunderbird execution mode that can be used to
troubleshoot issues in Thunderbird. In Safe Mode, you can reset some
settings or
disable add-ons that might be the source of problems. By comparing
Thunderbird's behavior in normal mode to its behavior in Safe Mode, you
can find out
if problems are being caused by a specific add-on.

Note: Thunderbird Safe Mode has no relation to Windows Safe Mode.
Note: In Thunderbird versions prior to 5, there was a shortcut on the
Windows start menu for Thunderbird Safe Mode. As of
Thunderbird 5
this item has been removed, and replaced with a Restart with Add-ons
Disabled entry on the help menu.

Howdy,

Another way to hear what Jaws has said is using Speech History, explained
below:
Speech History

By default, JAWS retains a list of the last 50 announcements that were
spoken by the speech synthesizer. For users of refreshable braille displays,
JAWS has always provided a mode where you could review this spoken
information in braille. When this mode is active, you can use the controls
on the braille display to review the last 50 announcements that have been
spoken by JAWS.

Speech History extends this functionality to users who rely on using speech
more than braille. If you miss one or more messages spoken by JAWS, you can
press INSERT+SPACEBAR, followed by H to open a Results Viewer window
containing up to the last 50 announcements spoken by the synthesizer. When
the Speech History window opens, you are placed on the line containing the
most recent announcement.

To clear the history, press INSERT+SPACEBAR, followed by SHIFT+H. The
history is also cleared when you lock the computer or completely log off.

If you do not want JAWS to keep a history of what is spoken, do the
following:

1.. Press INSERT+F2, and select Settings Center.
2.. Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to load the default JAWS settings.
3.. In the Search edit box, type "speech history" without the quotes.
4.. Press DOWN ARROW to move to Enable Speech History in the filtered
search results in the tree view.
5.. Press SPACEBAR to clear this check box.

Take care.

Three ways come to mind.

1. In Windows 7, press the Windows Key and type ease into the search box.
Then press Enter on Ease of Access Center. When the Ease of Access Center
appears, tab over to the Use the Computer without a Display link and press
Enter. Next, tab to the How long should Windows Notification Dialogs Stay
Open combo Box and choose from 5 seconds to 5 minutes. Thirty seconds or 1
minute should be adequate. I wouldn't want those balloons hanging around
too
long; they might block access to other items on the screen. (Posted by
frequent contributor Gary.)

2. Use the JAWS layered command JAWS key+spacebar, then (I think) shift-r.
for related features, press JAWS key-spacebar, then ?. (I can't get JAWS to
repeat the text in this dialog, or else I'd copy it here. I'd be happy if
anyone could clarify.)

3. Press JAWS key+left mouse key twice quickly. This method has never
worked
for me, but it has been recommended by other JAWS users.

Re: [JAWS-Users] unmuting HELP!

2016-08-29 Thread Mario Brusco
I'll tell you now because it's time for me to get ready for dinner, so
if you don't have any sound, the following should work in Windows 8.1 as
well as 7:

press the windows key and the letter R to call up the run dialog.
type sndvol and press the Enter key.
wait about 5 to 10 seconds and press the Tab key once.
press the Spacebar. this will unmute the main volume.
press the escape key or Alt+F4 if you wish.

you do realize the example I gave about CAD was for Kurzweil 1K, right?

Mario,

Your "CAD" example shows another anomaly. On my system, it's pronounced
as "cad," as in a disreputable man, even though written in all caps. I
wonder why yours says "Canada."

The larger problem you raise is one that applies across the board,
regardless of capitalization. The JAWS default for "Dr" is "Drive,"
presumably because FS figured it would come up most often inn addresses.
I've changed the pronunciation to "doctor." Ditto "St" is set by FS by
default as "Street," but it could also mean "saint."

Then there's the "read" problem, with the present and past tense
pronounced differently but spelled the same. In this last example,
however, FS must have figured out an algorithm because most of the time
JAWS pronounces it correctly when used in the past tense and also when
used in the present tense.

These problems must have beset creators of speech engines in the early days.

maybe a second dictionary just for abbreviations? but what if there's an
abbreviation that you don't want the facility to interpret. how would it
be handled, maybe with an exclusion rule?

I do believe the Kurzweil 1K has such a facility, but sometimes a
passage has an abbreviation that is not what it is commonly associated
with. for example, when ever WA is encountered, K1K says Washington, but
I don't want that. K1K should say W A, the way it appears.

another example, CAD is encountered and is pronounced as Canada instead
of C A D as in computer aided design.

Mike,

The potential problem with such a setting would be that many headings
and other text would also be spelled out. The only setting that comes to
mind is in the JAWS settings center that enables reading uppercase
letters when JAWS reads by line, word or character. The default is caps
announced only when reading by character. If you want to change that
default, go to the settings center with (as you know) JAWS key+6 on the
number row above the letter, then type "capitalization" into the edit
field. In the results that appear below, only one option is displayed.
Press spacebar to cycle through the options. Tab to and click on apply

Re: [JAWS-Users] repeating a track in winamp

2016-08-15 Thread Mario
if you decide to play one track, r will repeat the track once it is
finished playing provided the repeat mode is off, but if you decide to
play a playlist, r will repeat the entire play list once it finishes
playing the tracks. for example, playlist A has 3 songs, and song #2 is
playing. oo, I want to hear that song again. type x to repeat song #2.
but if you want to repeat song #2 that is part of a playlist, pressing r
will not repeat that song. r will repeat the entire playlist after song
#3 finishes. then song #1 will start playing, then song #2 and finally
song #3. and then the playlist starts again unless repeat is toggled off.

you can toggle repeat on and off while a track is playing.

If I have a play list playing though, x will replay the song, but let's say
for example, I'm cleaning the house, the play list is playing, a song I
decide I want to repeat, how can that be done because it sounds like I have
to always tap a key for it to repeat.

Hi Jaws users list, this is my updated section of my W-10 and Jaws, complete
guide for the anniversary update to W-10. Please read and let me know what
you all think about the guide. This helps me to determine if I am helping
you all learn about W-10.

Section, Customizing Windows 10 with Jaws.

Customizing w-10 with Jaws.

Overview.
Each section starts with***.
1. Reinstalling Jaws 17.
2. Setting default programs in w-10.
3. Changing your folder options, now called File Explorer Options, in w-10.
4. How to Turn off the background apps in w-10.
5. How to change how Windows updates are delivered.
6. Live Tile Region, now called, pinns view list box.
7. The All Apps region, now called, apps view list box, of the Start button
area.
8. How to put the, This PC, Icon on the Desktop.
9. How to put a shortcut to your user folders, on the Desktop.
10. Making Program shortcut Icons, on your Desktop.
11. How to put a shortcut, for iE on your Desktop or Taskbar.
12. Using a Pin to log-in to w-10.
13. How to Verify your Microsoft Account in Windows 10, I think this is
correct.
14. Miscellaneous.
15. Making your W-10 desktop look like W-7.
16. The Notification area and the Notification Chevron button.

1. ***Reinstalling Jaws 17.
1. The first thing you may want to do on your Windows 10 computer is,
Download the latest version of Jaws 17 to your Download folder.
2. If you upgraded to w-10 from w-7 or w-8.1, you should for best
performance, uninstall Jaws, you can keep shared components and shared
settings, so, uninstall Jaws 17.
3. You then can use Narrator, press Windows key+Enter, to turn Narrator
on/off, to go to your download folder where a downloaded copy of Jaws 17
should be already downloaded.
4. Now, install Jaws 17, Freshly on to your new w-10 computer.
5. This has proven to increase the performance of Jaws on w-10, especially,
in the Start button area, and in the Settings area of w-10.
6. Redo your Jaws shortcut keystroke, Control+ALT+J.
7. Redo your Jaws setting to make sure, that it is set to come on at the
log-onscreen.
For whatever reason these two settings are not saved, all other Jaws
settings are preserved.
8. If you are using Open book, you should do a fresh reinstall of this
program as well as, any other screen reading programs, on your w-10
computer.

2. ***Setting default programs in w-10.
1. windows key+I, Opens the settings area, search edit box.
Tab one time, You are in a horizontal list of 9 items, use your right and
left arrow keys to move across the items.
2. Right arrow to System, press enter, tab one time, down arrow to default

3. Tab across this window, look for the internet browser which by default is
Microsoft edge.
4. Press the spacebar on the edge, tab to IE 11, press the spacebar, this
will set IE as your default browser.
Do the same thing with all the different default programs, for example,
email clients.
5. Tab to, say, WLM email client default, press the spacebar on it, tab to
say, Outlook 2016, and press the spacebar, to set Outlook 2016 as your

The touch cursor works under Firefox 48, but, as you noticed, the JAWS

I've had similar experiences elsewhere, for example in the Windows 10

Turning off hardware acceleration and checking Always use the cursor keys to

Using JAWS and win10, the two best clients that work best with JAWS are
Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail. Right behind, After the new build of
win10 that will come out in a week, the win10 mail app will be

Thunderbird is your only choice with which you can import any account

this point, because there have been some little hiccups with Windows

Hi Steve,

Only after I updated to the latest version, V2.1.1, today. This update came
out May 20, 2016, but if you update to it, it will cost you a key code! So,
if you don't have an extra key code don't bother, & I'm not going to update
our other computers because the updates in this version aren't worth
updating for! I only did it to see how the new version worked, & a mistake
it was, at least for me. Someone more knowledgeable than my self might get
some benefits out of the updated version, but not us. Here's the updates
for this 2.1.1 version:

Last Updates:
**
v.2.1.1 -19-5-16
More reliable installer
Work offline feature (using right click on
Tray icon)
Fixed eset issue (hang on users that have eset and "email intergration"
enabled)
Some other minor fixes

v.2.1 -23-11-15
Fixed installation problems
Fixed runtime errors
Send-To for Windows 8 and 10
Simple Mapi mail now available (Send emails through other programs) for
Windows 7, 8 and 10.
Fixed Help menu
Faster and easy installation

Hmmm, are you getting that message Mike? I haven't in at least a year with
OE and Win 7.

You can go into the registry and reset the count:
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{..what ever your idenity
is.}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0. And look for the key
CompactCheckCount. The default is supposed to be 100, but you can change
that.

Also, check out these instructions on how to disable compacting in OE:

1. Do the Run command.

2. In the new window, type regedit and press OK

3. The registry editor opens

You need to make sure that you've scrolled to the top of this list and left
clicked once on My Computer so
it is highlighted.

Now click Edit and choose Find.

4. Type Compact Check Count and click Find Next.

The compact check count will increase by 1 every time you close Outlook
Express, by default, when it gets to 100 it will ask you to compact.

5. The number within the registry is based upon hexadecimal, and 100 in
hexadecimal is 64. It will take a few moments for the computer to find,
when it appears double left click the mouse on Compact Check Count

6. Then enter 0 as the value data and press OK

7. To finish, click File and Exit.

When I activate the link to install the add-on in Firefox and use the Alt-A

tried activating this button with an additional "enter" key, the Spacebar

Mike, the options you suggested have no effect on the announcement of
cells in Excel. I did find out on a cell, if I press control+alt+numpad
5, JAWS announces the coordinate followed by it's contents. but I want
JAWS to automatically announce this way as I move to different cells.

Hi Mario,

Try the following:
1. With Excel open open the Settings Center, Insert + 6, on the number row.
2. Arrow down to, Text Processing, right arrow to open, down arrow to,
General, & right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to the following, & tab 1 time on each of the below
options to
get an explanation of each:
Say Item State 1st, This is checked by default.

Say Windows Type 1st

Say Window State 1st

I haven't played with these settings, but I think this might be where you
make the settings changes you're looking for.

First highlight the column by pressing control + spacebar. Then using
the application key select column width and press enter. Now you can
enter a larger number for column width. By default it seems to be 8.43,
increase that to about 10.50 and you should be able to read the column.
I haven't played with the amount much so you may be able to read the
column with not such a large number but you will have to play with that
if you wish.

Kevin,

So does one of those cables have two USB connectors in a "Y" formation?
Connect them both to your computer. Or, if both those cables are able to
connect to your external drive simultaneously, then perhaps the intent is
that both need to be connected to the drive and to two USB ports on your
computer.

Does the USB cable have one or two connectors for attaching to your PC? On
my external DVD, there are two connectors. One connector only provides
power, while the other connector provides both power and data. With my

2013 and perhaps 2010, and might work in 2016 as well:

One way you can do this is to use JAWS key with F5 to list fields and press
enter on the one you want to move to in the form.
Press the application key (or shift+f10) and look for Properties in the
contextual menu. If you open properties there is a group of a couple radio
buttons for choosing between whether the checkbox is checked or unchecked.
Just move to the appropriate radio button and then use OK.

Re: [JAWS-Users] checkboxes in word

2016-06-30 Thread Mario
Kimsan, although I don't have 2016,the following is claimed to work in
2013 and perhaps 2010, and might work in 2016 as well:

One way you can do this is to use JAWS key with F5 to list fields and
press enter on the one you want to move to in the form.
Press the application key (or shift+f10) and look for Properties in the
contextual menu. If you open properties there is a group of a couple
radio buttons for choosing between whether the checkbox is checked or
unchecked. Just move to the appropriate radio button and then use OK.

Hi,

I'm filling out a form that is in word. It asks me a question where I must
check an item. How do I check the item?

I'm using jaws 17 and word 2016.

Thanks.

Mike, in addition to what MSA told you, I heard that since it's a fresh
install of W7, checking for updates should be continually done until
none are left. there are updates for updates already installed, not just
what you have installed like Microsoft Office programs.

Good Morning Adrian,

After clicking on New Updates in the system tray, tabbing twice, I land on
the Notification Chevron button, I arrow up twice to, new updates are
available, press enter , & I land on a progress bar that says 0 percent.
But, reviewing with the Jaws cursor, it says checking for updates. I
keep a

Windows Update shortcut on my desktop for convenience, & if I click on this
icon, if updates are ready I'll land on either the Important or Optional
update link. Now if I click on this icon I get the same progress bar 0
percent. I called MS Accessibility & they said to wait a couple of hours
since this is a new install & I've never checked for updates it could take
awhile. Also, they stated that they've had problems with their updates
that

might make updating even slower. Thank you very much for your input.

Mike, I'm experiencing this behavior, too. Go back to the system tray,
click

on Windows updates, then tab twice. If you get the same verbalization I do,
you'll hear, "System tray, new updates available." Here it's a button.
Press

enter and you're in business. For progress reports, I think you need to
return to the system tray and repeat the operation.

in windows 7,
launch the control panel,
type s or arrow to and enter on the sounds applet,
control+tab to sounds tab,
tab to the treeview where the first item should be "windows opened",
type s 3 times or arrow down to system notification,
press alt+b to browse for the location and sound you want.
the rest is fairly common to follow. I think wav files are the only
format that's accepted for a system sound.

I don't know how to assign system sounds in windows 10. hoping someone

which should give you enough time to left click the notification as soon
as JAWS announces it, if it is set to show it's icon in the notification

notifications which do not allow interaction, for which JAWS will

In order to use a different JAWS voice, you must switch to it. Press
JAWSkey+control+s to open the Select a Voice Profile dialog. Then arrow
down to Vocalizer Expressive and press enter. There used to be an option to
have a SayAll use a different voice than the default voice. But that option
has disappeared somewhere in the last few releases of JAWS. To switch
between the different Vocalizer Expressive voices, you need to open the JAWS
Options menu and then choose Voices and then choose Voice adjustment. Make
sure you're on the Vocalizer Expressive profile. Then tab to Voice Person
and select the voice you want.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS say all reading voice

2016-05-31 Thread Mario
Adrian, the problem is that I have 4 vocalizer expressive voices from
FS's site installed but they don't show up when I go to the profile for
vocalizer expressive. I'm suspecting that there's something else I need
to enable before Allison, Samantha, Ava and Tom shows up.

what that is... I haven't got a clue.

Mario, if I understand the problem correctly, you would differentiate
between profiles using the same voice by saving the new profile with a
different profile name. The initial vocalizer voice will be shown as
"vocalizer default" in the insert-control-s voice-switching menu. If you
then save your new vocalizer profile with a name such as "Vocalizer for
say all" when creating that profile, it will show up in the
insert-control-s list with that name, along with the vocalizer default.

Hi

In order to use a different JAWS voice, you must switch to it. Press
JAWSkey+control+s to open the Select a Voice Profile dialog. Then arrow

Hi all,

I am having problems installing the Goldwave scripts for JFW 17 on my 64-bit
Windows 7 PC. I am running Goldwave 6.22 and downloaded the latest Goldwave
scripts contained in file goldwave_5-6_jaws_scripts_2_0.zip.

I unpacked the zip file and placed the contents in folder:

C:\Users\My User Name\AppData\Roaming\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\17.0\Settings\enu

I then ran Goldwave and the scripts do not work. I would greatly appreciate
any advice. Thanks.

however, in Firefox's address bar, the link is

the authkey, id and cid are identical except that the difference is in
FF's link, the authkey's number is preceeded by an esclaimation mark,
and in IE, the authkey's number is preceeded by an ampersand. I don't
know what's the significance between the esclaimation mark and the
ampersand.

also pressing enter on the shortened link that Jim provided does get the
page of shared material. my default browser is set to FF. so even though
my default browser is not set to IE, the shortened link works with FF.

also, the original link had a break with the entire link enclosed in a <

Good morning Jaws Users list.

I have added an audio tutorial called, "Using OneDrive with Jaws to the jaws
users download page.

This explains how to use OneDrive on your computer to control what you have
stored in the cloud storage of OneDrive.

There is a 10 second gap in the middle, please ignore and keep listening to
the audio tutorial.

All feedback is welcome on my tutorials. Let me know if this lesson is

I just reviewed the documentation for installing them and it occurs to
me that since they are so old some additions might need to be added. For
example they were written for 4.51 and I doubt anybody on here today is
still using that version they would need to be compiled for a more
recent offering of JAWS, 15 at least if not 17.

I could do an audio recording of me installing them for myself if there
is any interest out there in listening.

I mention updating them since version 13 we have had the my extensions
feature which personally works for me very well. There will still be a
need to modify the default key map file, but since it is only a text
file with a JKM extension notepad handles that job quite simply.

Feedback would be appreciated including thoughts on a demo good or bad.

2016-05-26 Thread Mario
Sachin, in my past experiences with that error message, before doing
anything to it, what I do is

open the jss file associated with that script using notepad,
select and copy the entire contents to the clipboard,
press insert+f2, select and enter on JAWS's script manager,
if the file has scripts from another program, control+a to select all
and control+v to paste from the clipboard.
now save the file as cuckooclock, the jss is automatically added, and
proceed with the instructions.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Users OneDrive new share download link

2016-05-25 Thread Mario
Patti, when activating the link within the email, the default browser is
launched to go to the webpage, and if the browser has a add-on that
blocks ads, you will get that page asking you to login or create an
account. I know because I experienced the same issue.
you need to select and copy that address enclosed in a < and > symbol,
launch a browser that does not have any ad blocking add-on, paste the
address you copied to the clipboard previously into the browser's
address bar, hit enter, and you should be able to get to the tutorial.

Leonard, even if you don't intend to use lightening, hiding it does not
prevent it from loading. it is still enabled and will slow down the use

to get to the addin manager, press alt, then t, then a.
tab twice to a list of categories and arrow to extensions. tab 3 times
to a list of the extensions. lightening calendar should be on the list.
if it is the only one, you need to select it by arrowing to it and tab
to get to it's buttons. there should be a remove button. activate it by
pressing the space bar. it may go thru two stages where it's

Re: [JAWS-Users] How To Get Download Status Reports With Firefox 46

I use FF 46 often and don't need any plug in for JAWS to announce the
download status. just press control+j while the download is in progress
and just wait a second or three. you can try pressing the insert+up
arrow or the insert+tab to hear the status repeated.

never needed the status plug in

although... I use JAWS 16. so if JAWS 17 doesn't announce the status of
the download after pressing control+j, then this would be a bug in 17...
I think?

Hello.

I am currently downloading and saving the latest version of Jaws 17, and I
have discovered that, in Firefox 46, I can't get the download percent status
indications like I used to in earlier Firefox versions.

My sighted wife was able to get the download percent notifications started

not sure how to get to that on the keyboard with this new version of
Firefox.

If anyone has any suggestions to remedy this issue, I'd appreciate them very

in windows 7, JAWS would announce once the notification appears and then

switch to standard view (I think it started out as scientific). Then,

Hello gang.
Fox It reader seems to be completely inaccessible to JAWS for reading
PDF documents. My company forces us to open certain internal PDF's in
Fox IT reader. JAWS does not even access the menu much less read and
navigate anything in the PDF. Has anyone using JAWS hooked a Braille
display to the computer and been able to navigate and read the PDF in
Fox IT with JAWS running on the PC?

additionally, there are instances where skipping ads will not skip. this
depends on if the author has allowed skipping of ads. so if it doesn't
skip an ad, there's nothing you can do. just let it play.

Re: [JAWS-Users] regarding goldwev

2016-05-09 Thread Mario
I don't believe the trim silence affects the whole file, it just trims
the silences at the beginning and end of the file. for example, a music
or speech file is played at which music starts playing 4 seconds after
dead silence, and the music or speech ends 4 seconds before the file
stops. trimming the silence removes the 4 seconds at the beginning and
at the end of the file. so instead of the original file being 3 minutes
and 8 seconds, after the trimming is done, it is now 3 minutes long.

the feature that you're referring to is silence reduction which affects
the silences within the file.

On 5/9/2016 5:45 PM, Paul wrote:

I would add that the "remove silence" command can be very aggressive if

longer duration, in order to avoid truncating speech.

It is usually preferred with Goldwave (as well as other audio editors)
to avoid the presets and specify what you want. This is easily done by
tabbing through each effect or edit menu until a form field is reached
where you can type in the values.

1. It is free.
2. It is very simple to use.
3. It is very easy to install or may be used as portable.
4. It is very easy to configure.

I publish five podcasts and over 160 radio programs weekly, have many

something that used to be easy, when most sound cards had Stereo Mix or
