[JAWS-Users] Table View In Outlook 2016

2016-12-27 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.

Within the past few days, whenever I bring up Outlook 2016 in Office 365, I
am told by Jaws that I am in table view.

So far, this doesn't seem to have created issues with my ability to navigate
files and folders, but I'm wondering what table view is, and whether this is
something I should be concerned about.

I'm using Windows 7 and Jaws 17 here.

Thanks for any wisdom anyone can provide.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

Once again, I've set my Jaws to follow the PC.

It originally was set on "Jaws will not follow PC".

Will see if this makes a difference.

Which setting is recommended, to follow or not to follow?

Hello list,

So I don't know what I may have done, but for the last few days, I have been
experiencing an incredibly annoying issue with Jaws and composing Outlook
messages.

When I begin to type, the first few letters are spoken by jaws even though
I've always had this setting to echo speech off. The more frustrating thing
is that focus will jump around and what I type is spread out all over the
document. This is especially annoying when I'm working off a template text
and have to go hunt for the stray letters.

The thing is, if I type the first couple of letters and then erase them,
everything works fine.

I have to believe that in all my typing, I must have accidentally enabled
some sort of odd setting since this has only been a recent issue and I don't
experience it in a standard Word document. Only in Outlook messages. My
version of Outlook is 2010 and my messages are set to HTML. I am using the
most recent version of Jaws 18.

Does anyone have an idea of what may be causing this issue or what setting I
might try to change to fix it? That or is there some sort of set to default
setting in Outlook for composing messages?

Thanks,

A QUICK ACCESS TO ATTACHMENTS USING MICROSOFT OUTLOOK
BY: JOHN JUSTICE

Outlook offers an easy way to view, read or save attachments. This
process works on any attachment, text or audio.
1. Open the e-mail message in Microsoft Outlook.
2. SHIFT+TAB to the list of attachments. That list will include the
message itself.
3. Use the right arrow to highlight the attachment to be read or
listened to
4. Press Enter to activate whichever app will be used to access that
attachment.

With audio attachments, the default player is Windows Media Player. For
Word documents, Outlook will open a Word based document in that environment
automatically.
If the attachment is in text format, Notepad is the default application.
NOTE: This process will not automatically save the attachment. It will
simply open it for you. To save the attachment, press CONTROL+S and follow
the prompts.
FORWARDING AN E-MAIL ATTACHMENT USING MICROSOFT OUTLOOK Outlook will still
show the list of attachments on a separate screen.
Focus on that screen and press Escape to close the display. To forward a
message including the attachment,
1. Return to the list of messages.
2. Press CONTROL+F to activate the Forwarding option
3. Type the destination e-mail address
4. Tab to the message body and press ALT+S to send the message.

Hello Tom this is true if you don't renew before December 31 the cost does
go up to $180 this has been true since Jaws 4.0 so I always renew before my
SMA runs out.
When they came out with the first beta of jaws 18 I renewed mine so now I am
good through version 20 so I advise you that if you can you need to do this
ASAP because on January 1 the cost goes up and they don't care about how
difficult it is to get money.

My intent with this e-mail is not to stir up controversy, but to try to get
the truth regarding upgrading a Jjaws SMA.

Here's my situation:

My current Jaws SMA ends with Jaws 18.

I recently received a mail notification from Freedom Scientific advising me
that I can renew my Jaws SMA for the next two Jaws upgrades for $120, as
long as I do so by December 31. In a followup conversation with the FS
Customer Service Department, I was told that if I wait to renew my SMA after
December 31, that cost will go up to $180.

I was always under the impression that the $120 SMA renewal cost figure

inbox? Then if I do a alt+tab it will go back to the email I had open. I
have had this happen maybe once or twice a day. Has anyone else had this
issue. This just started doing this about one or two months ago.

I am using Jaws 18, Outlook 2010 and W10

[JAWS-Users] Strange E-mail Issue

2016-11-25 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.

This morning, I have discovered a very strange e-mail issue that I could use
some help with.

As a bit of background:

I currently run two e-mail accounts through Outlook 2016. They are my
University e-mail account, and my personal g-mail account.

When I send an e-mail to a particular e-mail address in my g-mail account
through Outlook, I get the following error message:

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

Technical details of permanent failure:

Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for
the recipient domain by d105412a.ess.barracudanetworks.com.
[64.235.150.252].

The error that the other server returned was:

550 Service unavailable; Client host [mail-io0-f173.google.com] blocked by
zen.spamhaus.org; 24.231.151.149

(Note: I have deleted the e-mail address from the message in order to
protect the person's privacy.)

I have no problems at all sending an e-mail to this exact same address using
my University e-mail account and outlook.

This would lead me to believe that something is wrong with my g-mail
account, but I can't figure out what, or how to fix it, especially since I
know the e-mail address I'm using is accurate.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

I think that's exactly what happened to me in the little experiment I just
did.

I believe the format was changed when trying to use forwarding.

I see that advantage to forward/edit mode, but when you forward a message,
you change the format, sometimes in unpredictable ways.

Hi All,

When y'all are copying text do you have the message open as if you were
reading the message? Or, do you have the message in edit mode, as in
forward / reply mode?

Running Outlook Express , & not Outlook, I always have the message I want to
copy text from in an edit mode so the cursor won't jump around on me using
the text selection keystrokes.
Take care.

Tom, I typically encounter this problem when the message consists of tables.

Regardless, my workaround is:

select and copy the entire message not with control-a,-but by placing focus
at the top of the message and pressing shift-control-end.
Paste the copied text into Notepad,
Select and copy that result with control-a, Paste the result into an empty
Word file.
Then I search for the passage I want and go from there.

If I paste from the email to Word, the confusing table format is retained.
As I write, I'm wondering if I've tried the control-alt-v paste special
method to paste as unformatted text. You might try that in order to skip the
Notepad step.

Hello, everyone.

Recently, I have been having problems with selecting, copying, and pasting
e-mail message content in Outlook 2016.

In many instances, the text I select does not correspond to what I later
copy and paste either into a word or notepad document.

I have tried routing the PC cursor to the Jaws cursor, but this does not
solve the issue.

The only way I can get the copied and pasted text to correspond to the
selected text is to select the text character by character, and then go
through the usual copy and paste process.

I believe this is a Jaws issue.

I'm using Windows 7 and Jaws 17 with Outlook 2016 here.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problems With Selecting, Copying, And Pasting e-mail message content In Outlook 2016

2016-11-12 Thread Tom Behler
Mike:

When I have encountered the problem, I was in reading mode with regard to
the involved e-mail.

In the latest situation, I tried to select, copy, and paste the info I
wanted after putting the e-mail in the forwarding mode, but only got partial
information, and some of what I did not want.

In this case, the info presented is in a table format, which, as Adrian
suggested, could be part of the problem.

Even though it is a bit more work, I can select, copy, and paste the entire
e-mail into a notepad document, and work with it from there.

I have yet to try the paste special option, but will do so at some point.

As I think I said in an earlier post, I ultimately got sighted assistance
last night from my wife, so auto-numbering is now turned off for e-mails in
Outlook 2016.

So, at least for the time being, I don't think I want to mess with anything.

However, I'm going to save your revised instructions here, so that if I
encounter the problem again, I'll know how to address it, hopefully
independently this time.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hello Tom; let me see if I cant help you hear.
Yes I did say it's a little tricky within the last step.

Tom,

1. From the File tab, click Options. Alt+f, t.
2. Select Mail and click the Spelling and Autocorrect button.
You can press letter "m"=mail, or down-arrow to mail. Do not press enter.
Tab. Enter on Spelling and Autocorrect button 3. In the Proofing section,
click AutoCorrect Options.
Tab enter on, AutoCorrect Options
4. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
Now hears where you need to navigate a little differently.
Tab around until you get to the ok button, now tab once to cancel, and then
tab once more, note jaws will not say anything, if you left arrow, you will
hear jaws say, Auto format as you type.
You now can use the tab key until you find your auto numbering, Note, if you
right or left arrow, when your two tabs past the ok button, You will see
various settings.
Hope this helps.

step to reach auto numbering. I'm working in Outlook 2010, but it looks as

instructions work on my system. One question that remains for me is whether
it's necessary to tab over to "Okay." I did so just in case, but it would be
nice if we didn't have to.

1. From the File tab, click Options. Alt+f, t.

4. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
5. In the Apply as you type section, un-check Automatic bulleted lists, then
right arrow once and check Automatic numbered lists.

Hi Tom,
If I am numbering sentences or anything and I want the auto numbering to
stop do this.
After you hit the enter key to start a new line then just press the let
arrow key and the auto numbering will stop. You can now just start typing
your next sentence. Then if you want auto numbering to start again just type
in the number you want and it will start numbering again every time you
press enter. To stop it again after press pressing the enter key just press
the left arrow key and the auto numbering will stop and the last number will
be gone.

I hope this helps.

The option just does not seem to be there.

I think I'm going to have to get sighted assistance on this issue, although
I'll be happy to try other suggestions.

Tom,

I hope David Whitehead won't mind if I re-post his instructions with some
slight modifications. I notice his original didn't include the right arrow
step to reach auto numbering. I'm working in Outlook 2010, but it looks as
though the steps haven't changed from 2010 to 2016 because David's 2016
instructions work on my system. One question that remains for me is whether
it's necessary to tab over to "Okay." I did so just in case, but it would be
nice if we didn't have to.

1. From the File tab, click Options. Alt+f, t.
2. Select Mail and click the Spelling and Autocorrect button.
You can press letter "m"=mail, or down-arrow to mail. Do not press enter.
Tab. Enter on Spelling and Autocorrect button 3. In the Proofing section,
click AutoCorrect Options.
Tab enter on, AutoCorrect Options
4. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
5. In the Apply as you type section, un-check Automatic bulleted lists, then
right arrow once and check Automatic numbered lists.

Hello Tom,

If you want to use the built-in auto numbering but you want numbering to
stop after pressing enter key just change the style to normal. After
pressing enter key and hearing the number you don't want press CTRL with
Shift key and the letter N. This should remove the number on the line
because you are switching from the list numbering style to the normal style.

I am a bit concerned over the significant drop in list traffic over the past
several weeks. Granted Microsoft has blocked out this domain and earlier this
year road runner did the same thing. Also in the past com cast and others have
done the same.

It might be possible that the list has run its’ course. It is 11 years old this
week as a matter of fact which I find hard to believe myself.

Let’s see how things go for a while before any major decisions are made so
don’t anybody panic at this point. I am just expressing my concern about the
way things have dropped off so much. It had to happen sooner or later. The fact
is I have no idea how long the average email list stays in business, I suppose
that would be an interesting study.

Now to sit back and see what kind of response this message generates.

Hi Tom.

Press Windows-key+e and select the drive you want to search on.
Press f3 and type the part of the filename that you know, and press
shift+tab twize or possible 3 times to the listview.
Arrow down to the file that you are searching for, and press the Application
key, and arrow down to "Open filefolder" and press enter.

Now you are located at the filefolder where the file is stored.

Hope this helps.

Hans Pauli.

Hi.

press f3 when you're at the location from which you want the search to
begin. Focus goes to the search box, type your search keyword(s) and I
believe press enter, not sure if you have to or not. The results come up in
the traditional style your list view is set to. Tab out of the edit box to
find them when there are any. Caps lock page down may possibly tell you
something about the progress of the search attempt. Backspace to go back to
the folder you searched from.

[JAWS-Users] Problems When Searching For A Lost File On The Computer

2016-09-23 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.

I am having a problem when trying to search for a lost file on my computer.

What I used to do was to go to my computer, and then the drive I thought the
file was saved in. I'd then hit control F, and the search would proceed.

I'd be notified when the search was completed, and I could then tab to get
the results, usually telling me where the lost file was located.

I can't seem to get this to work any longer.

I'm using Jaws 17 on a Windows 7 laptop here.

Hi Tom, I'm still using CDex to rip CDs but that's on my Win 7 PC. I haven't
tried it on my Win 10 machine yet. I know it's pretty long in the tooth but
I will use it as long as I can because I find it the most accessible and the
most configureable of such programs. Norma

I meant to ask whether the program allows you to rip CD's from your personal

I have used CD . EXE for that purpose, but I know that program is getting

from what you describe, it looks like outlook.com is blocking emails sent from
the jaws-users.com domain. Email accounts ending in @outlook.com, @

Here's some relevant info:

We are currently experiencing problems with the following ISPs:

MSN, Live, Outlook and Hotmail.

They are blocking out messages from this domain. They can post to the list but
they are not receiving messages. If those of you who are receiving messages
know members who are being blocked since they are using the above mentioned
services could pass this note along to them and ask if they would contact their
internet providers to un-block this domain that might go a long way towards
resolving the current crisis. People are contacting me privately asking what is

[JAWS-Users] How To Stop Jaws From Saying Clickable At The End Of EveryLine In A Downloaded PDF Document

2016-09-13 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.

I just received a faculty Emeriti news letter from my University. The
letter is accessed via a link that was included in an e-mail.

I can open the news letter with no problem, but when I start reading it,
Jaws says clickable at the end of every line.

Obviously, this makes for an anoying reading experience.

I have received news letters from this organization before, and have not had
this problem.

Is there something I can do to turn this "clickable" announcement off, or
could it be something in the way the news letter was sent and formatted?

I'm using Jaws 17, Windows 7, and Firefox as my main internet browser.

Thanks for any advice!

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

2016-09-11 Thread Tom Behler
Mauricio:

Well, I went into my g-mail account on the web, and deleted the five
messages that existed in my drafts folder the other day.

After that, however, a message I sent to the JFW list also appeared and got
stuck in my Outlook 2016 drafts folder, and I can't seem to get rid of it in
Outlook.

It sure is a pain to have to go into my web-based g-mail account to clean
things out of the draft folder on occasion.

Hi Tom,

I had the exact situation you described. Using Windows 10, JAWS 17, and
Office 365, there was an occasion that a message or two would not leave the
drafts folder from within Outlook 2016 despite the fact that the messages
were sent. Like you, deleting did not work; Shift+Delete was also tried to
no avail. Rather than doing the legwork to locate a potential setting
configuration in Outlook, I signed into my Gmail account using the web
interface and deleted the offending messages from the drafts folder. I have
since not had this problem.

Hello, everyone.

I am having an interesting problem with my personal g-mail account in
Outlook 2016 in Office 365 here.

For reasons I don't fully understand, I have 5 messages stuck in my drafts
folder, that I can't seem to get rid of. These are messages that were
successfully sent over the past few days, but they still appear in my drafts
folder. I have tried deleting each item, esentially moving them to the
deleted items folder and emptying that folder with no luck. I have even
selected and individually deleted each message. When I have individually
deleted each message, I was informed that the deletions would be permanent,
which was fine with me. The items get deleted from my deleted items folder,
and even temporarily from my drafts folder, but within a few minutes, they
re-appear in my drafts folder again, as if nothing ever happened.

How can I get rid of these messages in my drafts folder once and for all?

Yes, I did, but had no luck.

Interestingly, when I check my g-mail on my iPhone, there is nothing in the
drafts folder.

Right now, there is one message still stuck in my drafts folder in Outlook

I guess I stand corrected too!

Once again, I decided to go the Office 365 route, and, in my view, the verdict
is still out for me as to whether this was the best decision.

I'm finding that whenever Office 365 is updated, it can create some
difficulties with Jaws functionality.

As some may recall, my latest example of this was with the failure of the shift
tab to access my Outlook e-mail folders list after a recent update.

Both FS and Microsoft are aware of this issue, but it is still a bit
disconcerting.

Having this issue myself, I am somewhat pleased to learn it is not unique to

temporary fix is to use Control+Shift+Tab to get to the folder list and
Control+Tab to get back to the message list if you do not move to
Control+another
email folder. If you use Control+Shift+Tab to move to the folder list and
then use your arrow keys or first letter to move to another folder, using
Enter or the Spacebar will still work to get into the folder; Control+Tab is
only used if you use Control+Shift+Tab but do not move to a different folder
than the one just exited.

I hope this makes sense and hope there will be a quick fix. Thanks for the
info regarding how this problem is a known issue.

[JAWS-Users] Another Observation About System Restore

2016-08-08 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, all.

Ok, so, I exited Outlook, and got back in, and my Outlook folders no longer
display correctly, even after having done the system restore, which
apparently only corrected the problem temporarily.

I'm now really starting to pull out what little hair I have with this
problem.

Can anyone help me figure out what is going on here?

Sorry to keep this going, but it is really getting frustrating.

May have to call FS in the morning.

[JAWS-Users] System Restore Question

2016-08-08 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.

As I noted about an hour ago, doing a system restore solved my problem with
the folder display list in Outlook 2016.

However, for some reason, the first time I tried it, the system restore back
to two days ago did not stay.

When I got back into system restore, the "Undo system restore" option was
checked, and I could not get down lower on the screen to check the option
that lists restore points. I could find the option with my Jaws cursor, but
could not access or check it using the P C cursor.

I had to seek sighted assistance to get to this option.

Does anyone have a work-around for this issue?

Hopefully, my earlier system restore point will stay this time.

Thanks all for your patience.

[JAWS-Users] Outlook 2016 Folder List Display Problem Solved

2016-08-08 Thread Tom Behler
   Hello, everyone.

Well, I did a system restore to a restore point about two days ago, and now
my Outlook folders display properly again via the shift-tab key.

So, thanks to those who helped me work through this issue.

And, I now know how to do a system restore, so I've learned something new
today! (smile)

Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange Outlook 2016 problem

2016-08-08 Thread Tom Behler
Hi, Adrian.

I tried to maximize the screen when in Outlook, and not in an actual
message, but it did not make any difference.

The strange thing is that I can get to my folder list via control Y with no
problem.

It's almost like my folder list view that I get to via shift tab is somehow
collapsed, or, perhaps, not expanded.

I have no clue how this happened, especially since my e-mail was working
just fine earlier this afternoon.

I think it is some sort of a Jaws issue.

I'll keep checking here for possible remedies.

In the meantime, I can always use Control Y.

Tom, I wonder if you've inadvertently minimized Outlook. In case this is
what happened, put focus in Outlook but outside a message, then press alt
and spacebar together, then x for maximize.

Hello, all.

This afternoon, I tried accessing my list of folders in Outlook 2016, and am
suddenly unable to access the folder list.

I can get someone sighted to access my Outlook folders via the mouse, but
whenever I shift Tab from my message list view to my folder list, I get a
current mailbox submenu item, and I can't move anywhere with my arrow keys.

It's almost like Jaws is stuck in my current list view, with no way to get
back to my list of Outlook folders.

I have checked my layout settings under the settings view, and all seems as
it should be. My folder view is set to normal, the reading pane is set to
off, and the to do bar is off.

I'm at a loss as to what to do here to get things back to the way they
should be.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Mike:

This is good to know.

For whatever reason, I have always found the address book, accessed via
control shift B., to be easier to navigate and work with than the contacts
list, accessed by control 3. I've found this even in earlier versions of
Outlook, such as Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010.

Not sure why this is the case, but hopefully, it's just a matter of personal
preference and what works best for a given individual.

I'd be interested in the thoughts of others.

Although I can't speak about Outlook 2016, in earlier versions of Outlook,

between the 2 renditions of the addresses, I not aware of any major

Re: [JAWS-Users] setting up signature for email

2016-07-18 Thread Tom Behler
Mike and all:

Here are two sets of instructions that I have for creating an e-mail
signiture. They are for Outlook 2010, but as other list members have said,
they should work for later versions.

I haven't done this for quite a while, but I know that I was successful
using one of these procedures.

I believe both sets of instructions came from Jaws Users List members.

Tom Behler

Instructions For Creating E-mail Signiture:

1. Alt f to get to the file menue.
2. T to get to options.
3. Arrow down once to mail.
4. Tab six times to get to the word signature.
5. Hit your spacebar.
6. Tab three times.
7. "it will read "signature to edit".
8 Arrow up or down until you find the email address that you want to use
with your signature.
9.Tab twice, and it will say, "New signature".
10. Hit enter.
11. Type a name for your signature. I usually use the account name or
subject name, so I don't forget on which emails I want the signature.
12. Tab and space on the okay button.
13. Then you land on the signature page. As you tab read your choices for
font, etc.
14 When you get to the edit box type in your signature, then tab and check
the okay button.
15. You are then given a screen of other choices. Tab through to decide
whether you want to check or
uncheck any of these boxes. Once you tab to the okay button and click it,
you are back in your inbox and have created your signature.
16. If you have a single account your signature should be placed in your
message automatically.

Alternative instructions:

Create a new message -- alt H, N
Go to the insert tab -- alt N and arrow down once to the incllude box Arrow
right until you reach the signature dropdown and press enter.
You'll find yourself on the word signatures followed by an ellipses.
Press enter. You are now in the email signatures tab.
Tab three or four times until you get to the "new" button and press enter.
Once you've done that, you will be in an edit box where you want to type the
name of the signature.
Type the name then tab to ok and hit enter.
Now you will find yourself in a tab with all sorts of options like which
account you want the new signature associated with, the font, alignment,
whether you want the signature added to replies or forwards etc. The last
tab before ok is the edit box where you will type the text of the signature.
Once you type the text, tab to ok and press enter.

Zoe, if you have win7, press the Windows key together with the pause key
(the top right key on a desktop keyboard). Then switch to the JAWS cursor
and arrow down. On my computer, I'm told I have a 64-bit system. It takes
several presses of the down arrow key to reach this line.

The following is a list of improvements made between the JAWS 17 June 2016
release and the July 2016 update.

JAWS

. We have been working with Microsoft to improve the accessibility of the
Mail app included in Windows 10. After installing this update, read-only
messages you open are now read using the Virtual Cursor, similar to Outlook.

Additionally, just like in Word or Outlook, JAWS now announces when you turn

on or
off the bold, italic, and underline attributes in editable messages using
the CTRL+B, CTRL+I, and CTRL+U commands. While users should notice improved
performance with the currently released Mail app, Microsoft has made a
number of changes

as well to improve the experience which will be included in a Windows 10
update that will be available in the coming weeks.
. Due to issues with obtaining results from 411.com, the People Search
Research It lookup source has been updated to use the web site 10digits.us.
To search,
you now only need to enter the person's first and last name. If you receive
too many results, you can narrow the search further by typing the person's
first and last name followed by a comma, and then the city and state, or zip

code. For example, John Smith, Saint Petersburg FL, or John Smith, 33716.
. Addressed an issue where the INSERT+4 keystroke could not be found using
the JAWS Command Search feature. This command opens a dialog box where you
can select from a list of items such as Euro, Yen, Pounds, Trademark,
Copyright,

bullet, plus or minus, etc. and the symbol for that item will be inserted at
the cursor position in the currently open document. If you know of any other
keystrokes that are missing from the JAWS Command Search, or are not easily
found, please provide us with the name of the keystroke and the search terms

you are using to locate it so we can update the command descriptions with
this information to make them easier to find.
. When entering text in contracted braille using the APH Refreshabraille
display, addressed a reported issue where contracted words beginning with
dots
4-5-6 were not being correctly translated.
. This update contains new scripts from Corel to add JAWS support for the X8

versions of WordPerfect, Quatro Pro, and Presentations.
. Dictionary pronunciation rules have been added so that JAWS now correctly
speaks the name "Ai Squared".
. Resolved an issue with the Weather Research It lookup source in the German

version of JAWS not displaying the temperature.
. In response to customer requests, you can now configure braille input when

the braille language is set to English - United Kingdom.

Thanks, Jim.

Like you, I typically obtain and then save the executable file for the
latest Jaws updates when I think I need them.

This time, I decided to try the update function. ... The download seemed to
take forever, so I aborted it before it got too far along.

Not sure why that happened, but it was my experience at least this morning.

I download from the JAWS site www.freedomscientific.com. From the home

from the site (you get the the entire JAWS program with the adds, not just a
patch that you would get from clicking on the update links. Some say
re-downloading the entire program is a better way to ensure that JAWS always
remains integrated. You won't have to redo your settings..they remain as
you had them.

Hi Tom,

This is what I do in Widows 7 to make all the drives show in list view in My
Computer 1. Go to My Computer, & press, Alt + V, to open the view menu.
2. I have the, Status Bar, checked. If yours is unchecked & you press enter
to check it, it'll get checked but, it will also close the view menu after
you press enter to check it. So press, Alt + V again to open.
3. Arrow down to, List, & press enter to check it if it isn't checked.
Again you will have to reopen the view menu after pressing enter to check
the list option.
4. In, Sort By, I have Name & Ascending checked.
5. In, Group By, I have, None, selected.

With these settings I get only the drive names & letters reported by Jaws
without any extra verbiage. Of course, you may want extra stuff announced
so your settings may vary.
Take care.

Understood, Reed.

I guess I'm lucky in that my current Windows 7 laptop has an insert key
directly to the left of the delete key on the righthand side of the top row of
keys.

So, hitting this key, in combination with the letter T. is a very easy way for
me to get my status bar.

Anyway, I just thought I'd throw the suggestion out there since it may be
workable for some others with similar laptop keyboard configurations.

Hi Tom,

The problem with many laptops is that there is no Insert key. On my new Lenovo
X250, the insert key is a FN+End key combination. And, typically, the FN key
is on the left side of the keyboard and the End key on the right. So, it makes
it really difficult to get some of the JAWS key combinations.
I suspect this is the issue that the writer is dealing with. The only real way
to take care of it is to use the Laptop keyboard.

Go into basics under the file menu on the jaws screen and set your keyboard

hold down caps lock. For example, caps lock f7 will list links.

2016-07-05 Thread Tom Behler
No, the drivers for the external hard drive were already installed long
before I started experiencing this problem, and the drive now comes up very
slowly on the list of drives every time I call it up.

Specifically, I'd say it takes a minute or two for the hard drive to be
listed under "my computer".

The drive itself is a 1 terabyte drive, and contains about 200 gigs worth of
material.

I originally thought that the amount of material on the drive was the
culprit, but I haven't increased the amount of material stored on the drive
since I began seeing the problem.

Anyway, it's kind of strange, but at least the drive is now being
recognized.

Well, for some reason, my external hard drive now re-appears without having

I do notice, though, that it takes much longer for this to happen than used

When you click on Computer on your desktop, are you sure that the external
device isn't listed under "hard drives expanded" rather than"devices with
removeable storage"? On my Windows 7 desktop, for some unknown reason I
have never been able to figure out, my two portable hard drives are listed
under hard drives rather than devices with removeable storage whenever I
connect them to a USB port, although my flash drives are listed normally
under devices with removeable storage.

Hello, everyone.

I have just noticed a problem on the newly-acquired Windows 7 laptop I'm
working with.

When I insert a media storage device into one of the USB ports, such as an
external hard drive, or a thumb drive, the computer gives me the sound
indicating that the device is recognized. However, the device is not listed
as an available device under "My Computer".

The only way I can get the new device to come up under "my computer" is to
shut down and then re-boot the computer.

Is there a setting that I need to change in Windows 7 to get these external
devices to be automatically recognized and listed in the usual way?

I'm using Windows 7 and Jaws 17 here.

Re: [JAWS-Users] no jaws key on laptop

2016-07-05 Thread Tom Behler

For example, insert plus T will give you the status bar.

Go into basics under the file menu on the jaws screen and set your keyboard
layout to laptop rather than desktop. This change will make the caps lock your
jaws key, so whenever you would hold down insert to perform a function, instead
hold down caps lock. For example, caps lock f7 will list links.

What exact setting would I be checking?

The strange thing is that I didn't have this issue with this computer, prior

This is why I think a setting might have been changed somehow.

Tom,

In Windows Explorer, check your Tools/Folder Options settings, under the

Hello, everyone.

After quite a bit of effort, and another call to the Microsoft Accessibility
Hotline, I now have my personal g-mail contacts list imported into Outlook
2016 on my Windows 7 laptop.

However, there is one problem remaining:

I have two contacts lists in Outlook 2016-My University contacts list, and
my personal g-mail contacts list.

To access my University contacts list, I use the control shift B function as
I have always done.

However, I have not been able to accomplish this for my personal g-mail
contacts list.

Now, in Outlook 2016, if I want to access my personal g-mail contacts list,
I have to use control 3, and then when I am done, I have to use control 1 to
get out of that contacts list.

Does anyone know how I can get my personal g-mail contacts list imported
properly so that it can be accessed via control shift B, like I do to access
my University contacts list?

I used to be able to access both contacts lists in Outlook 2010 with no
problem.

The Microsoft Accessibility Hotline technicians do not know how to
accomplish this.

Sorry to obsess on this, but I simply have to believe it's possible!

[JAWS-Users] How To Save And Import Contacts Lists In Outlook 2016

2016-06-30 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.

In the process of re-installing Office 365 and Outlook 2016 to work with my
g-mail account on a Windows 7 laptop, my g-mail contacts list has been lost.

Fortunately for me, I have the completely updated g-mail contacts list on an
older Windows 7 desktop which I also use for home office work.

Can someone give me a set of instructions for saving, and then importing
that g-mail contacts list from the older PC to the new laptop?

I have some older instructions here for Office 2010, but am not sure how
well they would work with Outlook 2016 and Office 365.

Thank you!

[JAWS-Users] Firefox Question

2016-06-15 Thread Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.

I have a question about something I have noticed since the last firefox
update to Firefox 47.0.

It used to be that when I clicked on a link to a file that was included in
an e-mail, Firefox would go directly to the involved file, and I could read
the contents of the file right there in the Firefox browser.

Now, whenever I click on such a file, the file automatically gets placed in
the downloads folder on my computer.

The confusing thing is that this happens without any indication from Jaws.

My sighted wife tells me that there is a blue downloads arrow at the top of
the screen that you can click on to open the file. But, of course, I don't
have a clue about that arrow, and how it can be accessed.

I have noticed the same pattern if I manually copy and paste the link to the
involved file into the Firefox Browser.

I'm curious if anyone else has seen this new behavior, and if there are any
settings I can change to get things back to the way they used to be.

Thanks as always!
