Hi Tom, Please use a more descriptive subject line, i.e something that pertains to your question. It will give you a better chance of getting an answer for your post. Take care. Hi you can use any thumb drive that is 128 MB or greater and install portable JAWS on there. In fact you could use any removable storage, probably not CD/DVDs though as the settings wouldn't save onto that medium of course. Hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] hello having trouble selecting text from document onthe web and clipboard and paste how tos
There may be a better way to do this, but try the following: 1. Select the entire page where the article appears by hitting control A: 2. Open word; 3. Paste what you have saved into word; 4. save that file and give it a name; 5. scroll through the page you have saved until you find the article you wantt; 6. Start selecting text at the beginning of the article and continue until you reach the end; 7. Copy that text, control c 8. open another word document and paste the article into that document; 9. Finally, give that document a file name and save it. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of KB Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2009 5:22 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] hello having trouble selecting text from document onthe web and clipboard and paste how tos I would like to save an article from the web to a file and tried it and it didn't show up in the file. Re: [JAWS-Users] Hello Waqas Chauhdry, Getting rid of greater signs in a message
Hi there, My point was that the greater than signs are there for a purpose i.e. to help a sighted reader. Now, it doesn't take long for screen reader users to make the appropriate change in the dictionary but of course, if the correspondence in question is purely aimed at vi people than it makes sense to take them out. It is my view that accessibility works both ways and sometime some vi friends forget this important principle. Re: [JAWS-Users] Hello David, Collapsed messages in outlook express
I for 1, and perhaps the only 1 - love the option of group messages by conversation. Today on this list there were 30 messages, as many were in collapsed form I did not have to go thru those unnessarily. The only collapsed message that I expanded was this subject (I thought I might be able to helpfully contribute). But David is too fast for me. I am only able to barely keep up with large message lists by using message rules coversation mode. I find the setting right up my alley. Did you know that there are simple options to either watch or ignore a conversation? Of course the delete key works also. Is that the drive that Tiger direct has right now for 119.95? I ask because I picked up a Sea Gate a couple of years ago from them and it didn't come with any software at all. I just plugged it in and it was off to the races. In other words these are some screen reader friendly external drives. Mine is a 320 which is now over half full. Re: [JAWS-Users] Hello David, Seagate External Hard drives
Thank you, it sounds like what tiger direct is offering right now for 119. It does not surprise me that the software included is not accessible at all. Like I said there are other programs to use for backing up your system so nothing to worry that way. David Ferrin ow...@jaws-users.com Life is what happens after you have already made other plans. - Original Message - From: Alan Dicey adi...@bellsouth.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, January 30, 2009 7:37 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Hello David, Seagate External Hard drives Hello David, Well, No, I purchased the Seagate Terabyte External Hard Drive at Staples, which is like Office Max, or Office Depot. It was on SALE, cost $139, and the regular price in that store was $200. I just had DSL installed for my new Dell, running XP, and since I was downloading so fast, I started collecting stuff!! In fact, I collected as much in two (2) months as I had collected in 10 years with my Dial-out modem, and my old Gateway running Windows 98 (First Edition) (Smmile) ! Hey, I still have it set up next to my new Dell, it is still working, and since it has two (2) hard drives, I use it for stuff! I am going back this weekend to get another one, and hope it is still on Sale. Not because I believe I will fill up the Terabyte, but I want to back up everything I have on one to the other. What I am downloading is very precious to me, and do not want to even take a one in a million chance of losing it! Not that I do not trust Seagate, I have a 30 GB Seagate for almost 7 years it is in my old Gateway, and it is smooth as a whisper! I also purchased a Seagate external Hard Drive 30 MB for $900 back in 1985!! Yes, $900, not a typo! (Smile) It was still running when I dumped the IBM PC I used it with!! Darn, I should have kept that thing, it might be an antique now!! Oh yes, the applications that came with the Seagate Terabyte were just too graphical, I could not use JAWS with them. My wife was explaining the graphics to me, and it seem they were just simple directory type Applications. So, I just ignored them! This is good to know, but like I said viruses just do not make it on here if my minimal understanding of the mailman program is correct. Also the server does a virus scan before allowing any messages to pass to the list. It is hard to recommend specific model numbers because they are always changing. if it is for personal use, and you don't need to print in color, then just get the cheapest monochrome laser you can find. I got an HP LJ1018 for about $100 last year, but because model number keep changing, I don't know if that model is still being made, but I am sure there is something similar. Re: [JAWS-Users] Hello, just an introduction to you because I just joined this list:
hi karen, FS does not recommend the all in one printer, scanner, fax combos. It would be best to get a dedicated scanner. The Epson models seem to work well with Open Book. As for printers, they are pretty much plug and play. If you do not do much printing, I would recommend a monochrome laser printer. They can be found for less than $100. The problem with ink jet printers is that if you don't print much, the ink dries out, and you may have to replace a cartridge even though you hardly used it. Is it a laptop or pc? If you have jaws 9 on your computer, stick with it until the version 10 comes out in final form. If you don't immediately need a printer or scanner, maybe you could hold off on getting into those so you don't bombard yourself with a lot more information than you need right now.If you have ocr reading software such as Kurzweil 1000 or Open Book, scanner choice can be requested from the vender. I recently bought an hp deskjet 6940printer that works great with my xp system. It was about $109.00 from amazon.com and was available, also, at Best Buy. Laser printers are much faster than ink jet, and their cartridges last a lot longer, even though they are more expensive than ink jet cartridges. I bought an HP monochrome laser printer for about $100, and it comes with a toner cartridge installed. I've had it for over 2 years, and am still using the original cartridge, even though I don't print a lot. Karen, A word of advice. if your using a laser printer, and the paper's a little warm after you remove it, don't worry. the laser inside reaches a temperature of around 400 degrees centigrade when printing, that's why there's a fan inside the printer, so that the paper doesn't burn, and it cools the toma as it reaches the paper. My problem now is no instruction with Jaws in my area. So much of what goes by here and in front of me I do not know what it is, or what it does, or what it's for. Do you all know of any good beginning tutorials online for windows, and Jaws? Something not too hard to get through without going through many pages looking for it? I am currently using Jaws 9 because I don't know how to install ten. A guy I know did it for me. I am also using a braillenote to communicate with you because don't complesely understand Outlook Express also need help with that too. I am also asking if you have advice about what printers and scanners may be good for use with Jaws as I am in great need of both, but have no idea what models might work. I tried a combination printer from Del, but would not work with Jaws. Everything locked up. The guy I was with had also no knowledge of Jaws. It was a combination printer scanner, but would not work. Sold to a friend. Any information would be appreciated. I did have a sighted instructor for a few months, but in the end, learned from other professionals in the area that she has been telling blind people here that she knows jaws, and she doesn't, finally admitted it to me. So many have been taken in by her. Fortunately, for us she is just volunteer at local library. So we paid nothing thank you. Re: [JAWS-Users] Hello, just an introduction to you because I just joined this list:
When you got JAWS, did you get a braille command summary? Did you get any training tapes or CD's? A few things to get started with, that I can think of now. The insert, or JAWS, key is the one bottom left of the desktop numpad. (For a laptop, use its equivalent.) Pressing insert+1 gives you JAWS keyboard help. Then pressing a key if it is used in some way by JAWS announces what it will do. Pressing a key while still in this mode twice quickly yields a bit more info on what that keystroke does or will do. Within JAWS Keyboared Help you are in a 'training mode', so while there nothing gets activated outside it. When you want to switch Keyboard Help off, hit the JAWSKey+1 again. [That 1 is on the number ro below the function keys.] You can also look through the extensive JAWS help system, by going to the JAWS icon and hitting alt-h and then exploring it, or (if JAWS is in the system tray) - Insert+F11 and if it is there, down-arrow and you will hear it announced - - Insert+j, h yields the JAWS help system. I know that there are good volunteer tutors on this list, who will teach one-on-one if they can. It might therefore assist if you were to tell us in what district you reside and work with JAWS, so that you could arrange to meet, etc. For Windows tutorials more generally, you could do a lot worse than check out www.accesstechnologyinstitute.com/ where Cathy-Anne Murtha has made available courses in Windows Fundamentals, especially adapted for blind users. (You can also normally go to a link from within an email message, when a link is under the cursor, by pressing enter on it.) You might also like, in this wise, to visit the links mentioned at the end of a message here - www.jaws-users.com/ and www.blind-computing.com/ - Original Message - From: Karen Bailey [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, September 16, 2008 12:24 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Hello, just an introduction to you because I just joined this list: Hi I am a 54 year-old lady who has been out of computer for almost twenty years. But this left me in great confusion because everything she gave me was in print, and not organized, and I have no readers. Any help you all can give will be greatly appreciated. Karen, are you using windows xp or vista operating system? Is it a laptop or pc? If you have jaws 9 on your computer, stick with it until the version 10 comes out in final form. If you don't immediately need a printer or scanner, maybe you could hold off on getting into those so you don't bombard yourself with a lot more information than you need right now.If you have ocr reading software such as Kurzweil 1000 or Open Book, scanner choice can be requested from the vender. I recently bought an hp deskjet 6940printer that works great with my xp system. It was about $109.00 from amazon.com and was available, also, at Best Buy. Maybe it would work for you to tell us what you know how to do up to the point that you don't know how to proceed. Then we can chime in. marilyn Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use the following address in order to contact the management team [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, I have to get a printer quite soon because I'm looking to print out letters looking for a job. I have windows xp, with a laptop from Del. Have the Open Book program but no scanner yet. I look at starting menu, get confused about what each thing is for.
