[Kaboodle-user] Kaboodle 1.x mothballed

2011-03-17 Thread Scott Best

Heyaz. As most of you probably know, Kaboodle has been mothballed.
I've updated the main webpage to explain this:

"After many years of effort, and through no fault of your own,
Kaboodle has been mothballed. :-( Please feel free to try it out and
suggest improvements, but our development efforts are currently
focusing elsewhere..."

I'm going to discontinue this email list later today, because who
really needs more email, right?

Please feel free to email me directly with any questions or
suggestions about Kaboodle's future.

cheers,
Scott

Re: [Kaboodle-user] Kaboodle crashes just after startup

2008-04-05 Thread Scott Best
Terry:

Hello! Nope, I never did figure out that error. You're right, some
users worked around it by disabling the 1394 interface completely
from the list of "network interfaces" (it's not as if 1394 is, really, a
network interface to begin with). But that workaround isn't 100%, and
Kaboodle development has mothballed while I work on EchoVNC
these days...

Heya. Yes, we turned off the GetEngaged service, as it started to

Kaboodle is still useful for intra-LAN command and control. But for
remote-desktoping across the Internet that Kaboodle provided, I'd
recommend our "UltraVNC with echoWare" solution for now:

Re: [Kaboodle-user] Privacy Policy

2006-02-12 Thread Scott Best

Sylvia:

Hello! I presume you're asking about the GetEngaged registration
and partnership server, and not Kaboodle itself. If so...the unfortunate
answer is no: I've not clearly documented the Privacy Policy we have
for that server and the information users provide for it. A user asked
about this last year as well, when I wrote:

Heya. All good questions. It's actually been a concern of many
Kaboodle users over the years -- the security of a basing our
GetEngaged
authentication on public/private keypairs is a Good Thing, but
there is
no "de-facto standard" for us to base those keyfiles on, so we
wrote our
own...and the privacy concerns (if not handled perfectly well) make
that

a Bad Thing.

In the future, I expect we'll be forced to change the
authentication

mechanism, so that Kaboodle generates its own keyfiles, and users
simply email them to each other. Since that's harder to use than we
originally envisioned...we may even fall back to simple "passwords"
for GetEngaged connections.

In any case...I'll post some text onto the GetEngaged
website to

answer the perfectly valid concerns you wrote about. Thanks for
bringing it to my attention.

Unfortunately, I remain delinquent about getting some text onto the
GetEngaged website. I've been putting a lot of effort into the 2.0
release,
which will not require this certificate server approach at all.
That's not
much of an excuse, I admit, but it's a reason that -- in my mind --
it's not

going to be a longterm issue as the server will not long be needed.

I hope that helps!

Re: [Kaboodle-user] VNC not working with Direct Connection

2005-11-06 Thread Scott Best

Jeff:

Heya; sorry for the very late replies to your detailed messages.
Yes, there is a "bug" in Kaboodle's GetEngaged connection that can
cause the connection to be unreliable, especially in "direct mode".
If you can connect using KaboodleProxy via a common echoServer,
the overall connection should be more reliable.
Sorry for the confusion. I look forward to having this repaired
in the 2.0 release.

Any ideas on why this might be happening. Are there any settings I

Any thoughts?

PS I must admit I am finding all the permutations a bit confusing.

You wrote on Fri, 4 Nov 2005:

Hi

I've somehow managed to get Direct Connection working fine now -
maybe I didn't have the ports forwarded correctly one end.

Now I seem to have uncovered a small problem. I can connect fine and
remote control my master node pc on the other end if I connect using
the Kaboodle Proxy - I am using TightVNC as the remote control
software.

However if I connect using the Direct Connection method the remote
control doesn't work - I get an hourglass for a few moments and then
nothing. I try it again and nothing, no sign of TightVNC viewer
firing up.

I've tried this a few times and it seems to be consistent.

I also have a hunch that remote control doesn't work if you one
party makes the connection via Kaboodle proxy and then the other one
tries to remote control a pc on the first network. Although I guess
this would be quite an unusual scenario.

One small point - I can't seem to disconnect by right-clicking the
connected network's name and selecting disconnect. It's never worked
for me. The only way I seem to be able to disconnect is to close
down Kaboodle.

Another small point - when I close down Windows XP Professional with
Kaboodle running Kaboodle doesn't get closed like other programs but
instead I get a dialog requiring me to 'End Now', which is a shame
because I cannot then restart the computer remotely - this blocks
the restart process.

Thanks again for a great free set of programs.

Kind regards

Jeff Cole

 10.0.0.0- 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)

... also allowing more restrictive mask options than above (e.g.
192.168.131/24, or 172.31.16.0/24)

I've taken the above ranges from http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html
.

These addresses are guaranteed not to exist on the real internet.

Taking that one stage further, the additional ability to add *single*
internet hosts (in the public IP address ranges) would solve the mail
server

requirement for me, and stop people doing completely stupid things like
trying to scan the whole internet accidentally.

Useful ideas? Keep up the good work! Thanks! Warwick. PS BTW have you

Heya. Yes, that's a popular request. The problem is, if Kaboodle
allowed
the end user to specify a network range to scan, a lot of user would
set it up

try to limit
the scan range, by requiring users to pick networks that we some small

What we're going to do in Kaboodle 2.0 is to enable Kaboodle to scan
the /24 range on *all* of it's active network interfaces. So when you
VPN, a
virtual interface is created, and Kaboodle will scan it.

Hope that helps!

Ted:

Yes, since you're using the demo proxy, the router/firewall settings
won't matter, they all get bypassed easily enough. The times I've seen
Kaboodle not work was because the Partnership files were not installed
on the current Master Node, but rather on another PC that was the
Master node at some other time. As I said the other day, it's a bit more
complicated that I originally planned; it will be much cleaner in 2.0.

For now, please let me know if EchoVNC ends up being more useful
for you.

I'm not sure what other information I could provide that might allow
you

to help me figure out what's wrong. I followed the instructions for
setting up connections and partnerships, but most of the other settings
I left at default. I didn't have any installation problems, and the

P.S. - I noticed (at work) how it's not possible to have two PCs on the
same network as masters. However, for whatever reason, when I was
using

my laptop at home (thru a wireless connection) it did allow me to have
the main desktop as master and the laptop as master as well. That's
when I was able to do a connection from the desktop to the laptop (but
not the other way around). I guess this points to a problem with the
network setup?

Ted:

Heya. Sounds like you have some things a bit jumbled (not
your fault; that part of Kaboodle *is* a bit jumbled).

When two or more PC's are on the same LAN, only one of
them (ie, the "Master Node") can participate in a LAN-to-LAN
GetEngaged connection. So if your PC and laptop are on the same
LAN, only one of them can be the "Master Node", and so you
won't be able to make a GetEngaged connection between them. If
your laptop and PC are on *different* LANs (ie, one on the LAN,
one connected via dialup), they can both become "Master Nodes",
and they can then make a GetEngaged connection with each other.

As for the KaboodleProxy capability, it can be used to
help facilitate the GetEngaged connection -- it's an alternative
to doing port-forwarding. If you've already port-forwarded for
the PC on the LAN, you won't need to use KaboodleProxy (though
it will still work, of course).

Lastly...what *is* the "connection you really care about"?
If you just want to connect from one Windows PC to another Windows
PC across the Internet regardless of firewalling, you should try
EchoVNC: "http://www.echovnc.com";. It connects just to PC's
together, whereas Kaboodle attempts to connect two LAN's together.

hope that helps,
Scott

4182, 4183, and 11965 (being a novice at TCP/IP stuff I can't be

certain

I did this part correctly, though). And I verified that Zebedee was
running.

But so far I've only been able to make a connection from my home PC to
my laptop - not the connection I really care about. And even that
connection may not have been a good test since both PCs were on the

But trying to connect I always get a message along the lines of

Is the problem my firewall settings, or should the demo proxy allow
connections beyond a firewall? I'd gladly purchase the $25 software

it will fix my current problem. And are there any other things I

Heyaz. Thanks to Dmitri Popov for the recent NewsForge article

[Kaboodle-user] echoServer 1.40-RC02 for Linux released

2005-06-23 Thread Scott Best

Heyaz. Just a quick email that Release Candidate #2 for
the 1.4 version of echoServer for Linux is now available.

ftp://ftp.echogent.com/EchoServer/echoserver-1.4rc02.tgz

In this version of the echoServer:

* user-mode connections are now supported.

* the software is now a try-before-buy "shareware" similar
to echoServer for Windows.

* minor fixes for stability, memory-leaks, and debug modes.

If you previously purchased a echoServer for Linux
at our Kagi store, and would like to upgrade it to this one,
please just reply to me via email, and I'll send you the
required registration code.

Feel free to pass along any questions or concerns or
suggestions for improvements of future versions.

thanks,
Scott

[Kaboodle-user] echoServer 1.40 for Windows released

2005-06-19 Thread Scott Best

Heyaz. Just a quick email that we released the 1.4 version
of echoServer for Windows today (the Linux version should also
be ready before the end of June). It's not yet on most of the
mirrors, but you can get it here:

ftp://ftp.echogent.com/EchoWare/echoServer_1.40_Setup.exe

In this version of the echoServer:

* user-mode connections are now fully supported. With a
user-mode connection, you can easily assign a single user
(e.g., an "admin user") to multiple connection groups.

* we added a "Check Server" button to initiate a firewall-scan
of the PC hosting the server.

* GUI updates in the Status tab, so you have a better idea of
exactly who's connected.

Any registration codes you purchased for previous versions
are still valid for this version, of course.

Feel free to pass along any questions or concerns or
suggestions for improvements of future versions.

thanks,
Scott

[Kaboodle-user] Re: Problem after new installof Ver 1.02

2005-06-12 Thread Scott Best

Wow, that doesn't look good. Exactly what version of
WinPcap do you have installed? You can find the very latest
one here:

http://www.winpcap.org/install/default.htm

That screenshot looks like Kaboodle crashed when
loading the WinPcap DLL. We had a problem with one of
the earlier 3.0 releases, but things with 3.1beta4 have been
pretty stable.

And did Kaboodle 1.01 give you this problem as well?

thanks,

I connect to selected GetEngaged partner that works with the Kaboodle

Peter:

Heya. The echoServer lisens to TCP 1138 by default. The Microsoft
ISA server probably blocks outgoing traffic to any "non standard" TCP
port -- ie, ports not associated with the common applications of web
browsers, FTP, DNS, etc.
So try this: run your echoServer on TCP-443. Then just add a
":43" to the end of the server address, for example:

my.proxy.address:443

Please let me know if that works for you!

cheers,

Re: [Kaboodle-user] "Stop Check" not clickable

2005-04-28 Thread Scott Best
Kelly:
Heya. The "Stop Check" button should become clickable only
while Kaboodle is trying to auto-detect for VNC servers on a target
PC. Once it's done checking, the button should "grey-out" again.
Similarly, the "Connect" button will be greyed-out when Kaboodle
doesn't think there's a VNC server running on the target PC (ie,
there's nothing to "connect" to).
As for the Install button...that capability has been deactivated
for the 1.0 release. I hope to fix it for 1.1.
As for PC's beyond the local subnet, you'll need to setup a
"mini VPN". So, each subnet will have it's own "Master Node", and
you create a GetEngaged connection between the two:
http://www.kaboodle.org/GetEngaged_setup.html
Hope that helps!

Heya. The "remote install" feature of Kaboodle is
still broken; you'd best best off still using FastPush for
that, for now.
sorry,

I cant get Kaboodle to install to remote pc. I have
admin on it, and have vnc installed locally. I also
have FastPush on here too.
Any ideas? The button for intall just stays disabled.

Re: [Kaboodle-user] does Kaboodle just store proxy server ip address, or does it store server name somewhere?

2005-03-05 Thread Scott Best
David:
Heya. Some answers below:
As per our previous discussions I am now using the widows echoserver
and the fqdn for it maps to a dynamic ip. I see that when the
echoserver authenticates it then drops the name of the proxy server
and just stores the ip address. It looks like it stores it in the
registry, and then retrieves it on next startup.

This leads me to several questions:

1) If my IP address changes, even though my dynamic dns client from
no-ip.com adjusts for that, I don't see that kaboodle would be able to
pick this up, since I don't see it storing the server name?
Kaboodle does mistakingly store the list of proxy servers
as IP addresses, not as FQDN's. We'll fix that. Then when it
starts up, it'll reconnect correctly, even if the FQDN resolves to
a different IP address (e.g., dynamic-DNS).
 4) In any event, is there a way that I could preconfigure the
kaboodle install - to send to a customer with the proxy server name
and/or ip address already added?
If it read from a config file I could change the config file. If I
have to write to the registry, then I could figure out how to do that
programmatically.. don't know how but obviously there must be a way.
It's a good idea, but not yet supported. That goes onto a
second list. :)
cheers,
Scott

Re: [Kaboodle-user] error on loading

2004-12-17 Thread Scott Best
Dave:
The problem with XP SP2 is the firewall. So even though 11965 is open
on your router, it is not (probably) open on the built-in firewall.
Please try
one of these two things:

1. Add Kaboodle and Zebedee (inside of the Kaboodle Helper folder) to
the
list of program exceptions. How to do that is described here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/
sp2_wfexceptions.mspx

2. Use the KaboodleProxy server instead of a "direct" connection.
Details
about that here:

http://www.kaboodle.org/kpdemo_setup.html
I would try #2 first as that's easier, in my opinion. As for the DEBUG
files, please only worry about those if Kaboodle crashes or generates an
error on startup. Once you do #1, those errors should go away (the next
version of Kaboodle will do #1 automatically).
Hope this helps!
cheers,
Scott

Okay...try this one. The 0.99e pre-release is available on

Heya.Unfortunately...when Kaboodle is used to connect two
networks together, you can't yet "map a drive" across the connection.
That's a feature I plan on adding soon, but it's not there yet. Once

And it's an interesting idea: designating another LAN to be

Kaboodle personal VPN connection would break. This would cause the
backups to fail. Would Kaboodle automatically re-establish a VPN
connection if the backup application attempts to connect to a computer
on another LAN or does the connection need to be manually made before
the application is used?

Thanks again,
Frank

[Kaboodle-user] Re: uninstalling Kaboodle (was: no subject)

Ken:
Sorry for the very late reply: Kaboodle 0.99c didn't come with
an installer, so it didn't install itself into your Windows system in
the
same way that most commercial Windows applications do (ie, no
DLL's, no "Start Menu" entries, no "Desktop icons", etc.). You can
simply delete the Kaboodle folder and it'll be effectively gone.

I'll be including a InnoSetup installer with one of the future
releases this year; am just working on other Kaboodle components
first. If anyone wants to help out with this ... please feel free to let
me know!

Hello! Yes, the 0.99c version of Kaboodle had a few difficulties with
WinXP SP2, especially the restricted use of "raw sockets" that it allows
(or, really, doesn't allow). I think we've completed a workaround, but
it's
not fully stable yet. Please feel free to evaluate the BETA version of

Re: [Kaboodle-user] kaboodle proxy

Helmuth:
Hello! Kaboodle-proxy is currently being tested on our debian-servers
right now. It should be ready for public beta-testing next week. If you
would
like, please join the beta-testers list here:

http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/kaboodle-proxy-beta
With kaboodleproxy, two Kaboodle users can use Kaboodle's
"personal VPN" capabilities even though both of them may be behind
a restrictive firewall. In Kaboodle, a "web-browser VNC Viewer" is not
yet supported -- only the "native" Windows VNC Viewer is supported
in Kaboodle (since Kaboodle is windows-only currently, that was the
easiest approach).
Regarding professional support for kaboodleproxy, please feel
free to contact me off list with your support requirements, and I'll
provide
a more considered response than "sure, of course!". :)

thoughts on setting it up as a service so that it runs before login?
These would GREATLY extend the functionality as a remote management

sharing, but it seems that a LOT of the discussion on this list has to
do with remote management.

Heya. I think I know what this bug is that you're seeing. Do you happen to
be running Kaboodle on a WinXP machine via a user account that does not
have administrative rights?

-Scott

First, I like the idea of Kaboodle, it’s neat.  But, I am noticing a few strange problems.  The first time I run it, it sees the system I am running on.  I then refresh and it sees my two other systems running VNC and my two routers.  However, it seems to think that none of my systems are running VNC, which they all are.  I can’t seem to make it understand that VNC is running on them so it refuses to allow me to connect without installing VNC on them, which I don’t really want to do since they are already running VNC.  Is there something that I am doing wrong to cause my issue?
Thanks,
Scott
