[Kaboodle-user] Kaboodle 1.x mothballed
Heyaz. As most of you probably know, Kaboodle has been mothballed. I've updated the main webpage to explain this: "After many years of effort, and through no fault of your own, Kaboodle has been mothballed. :-( Please feel free to try it out and suggest improvements, but our development efforts are currently focusing elsewhere..." I'm going to discontinue this email list later today, because who really needs more email, right? Please feel free to email me directly with any questions or suggestions about Kaboodle's future. cheers, Scott -- Colocation vs. Managed Hosting A question and answer guide to determining the best fit for your organization - today and in the future. http://p.sf.net/sfu/internap-sfd2d ___ Kaboodle-user mailing list Kaboodle-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/kaboodle-user To UNSUBSCRIBE, click on the above link.

Re: [Kaboodle-user] Kaboodle crashes just after startup
Terry: Hello! Nope, I never did figure out that error. You're right, some users worked around it by disabling the 1394 interface completely from the list of "network interfaces" (it's not as if 1394 is, really, a network interface to begin with). But that workaround isn't 100%, and Kaboodle development has mothballed while I work on EchoVNC these days... cheers, Scott On Apr 5, 2008, at 7:22 AM, Terry E. Re: [Kaboodle-user] Privacy Policy
Sylvia: Hello! I presume you're asking about the GetEngaged registration and partnership server, and not Kaboodle itself. If so...the unfortunate answer is no: I've not clearly documented the Privacy Policy we have for that server and the information users provide for it. A user asked about this last year as well, when I wrote: Heya. All good questions. It's actually been a concern of many Kaboodle users over the years -- the security of a basing our GetEngaged authentication on public/private keypairs is a Good Thing, but there is no "de-facto standard" for us to base those keyfiles on, so we wrote our own...and the privacy concerns (if not handled perfectly well) make that a Bad Thing. In the future, I expect we'll be forced to change the authentication mechanism, so that Kaboodle generates its own keyfiles, and users simply email them to each other. Since that's harder to use than we originally envisioned...we may even fall back to simple "passwords" for GetEngaged connections. In any case...I'll post some text onto the GetEngaged website to answer the perfectly valid concerns you wrote about. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Unfortunately, I remain delinquent about getting some text onto the GetEngaged website. I've been putting a lot of effort into the 2.0 release, which will not require this certificate server approach at all. That's not much of an excuse, I admit, but it's a reason that -- in my mind -- it's not going to be a longterm issue as the server will not long be needed. You wrote on Fri, 4 Nov 2005: Hi I've somehow managed to get Direct Connection working fine now - maybe I didn't have the ports forwarded correctly one end. Now I seem to have uncovered a small problem. I can connect fine and remote control my master node pc on the other end if I connect using the Kaboodle Proxy - I am using TightVNC as the remote control software. However if I connect using the Direct Connection method the remote control doesn't work - I get an hourglass for a few moments and then nothing. I try it again and nothing, no sign of TightVNC viewer firing up. I've tried this a few times and it seems to be consistent. I also have a hunch that remote control doesn't work if you one party makes the connection via Kaboodle proxy and then the other one tries to remote control a pc on the first network. Although I guess this would be quite an unusual scenario. One small point - I can't seem to disconnect by right-clicking the connected network's name and selecting disconnect. It's never worked for me. The only way I seem to be able to disconnect is to close down Kaboodle. Another small point - when I close down Windows XP Professional with Kaboodle running Kaboodle doesn't get closed like other programs but instead I get a dialog requiring me to 'End Now', which is a shame because I cannot then restart the computer remotely - this blocks the restart process. Re: [Kaboodle-user] Other routable networks
Hmm. The tick-boxes for RFC1918 address ranges is in interesting idea, thanks! And I've seen NetworkView before. It's pretty good! Kaboodle was built to enable remote-control of what it finds on the network, though, not just the ability to find stuff. Am looking forward to 2.0 myself. :) cheers, Scott On Oct 23, 2005, at 1:30 PM, Warwick Grigg wrote: Hi Scott, My VPN connections are handled by the router/firewall/gateway (ipcop.org), not by a separate VPN client network adapter, so the multiple network interface idea wouldn't work for me. I appreciate that you don't want kaboodle to be misused and classed as a threat by AV progs. How about some tick boxes for additional ip addresses (and mask options) for the officially designated *PRIVATE* ip address ranges: 10.0.0.0- 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix) 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix) 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix) ... also allowing more restrictive mask options than above (e.g. 192.168.131/24, or 172.31.16.0/24) I've taken the above ranges from http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html . These addresses are guaranteed not to exist on the real internet. Taking that one stage further, the additional ability to add *single* internet hosts (in the public IP address ranges) would solve the mail server requirement for me, and stop people doing completely stupid things like trying to scan the whole internet accidentally. Re: [Kaboodle-user] Kaboodle won't connect?
Ted: Yes, since you're using the demo proxy, the router/firewall settings won't matter, they all get bypassed easily enough. The times I've seen Kaboodle not work was because the Partnership files were not installed on the current Master Node, but rather on another PC that was the Master node at some other time. As I said the other day, it's a bit more complicated that I originally planned; it will be much cleaner in 2.0. For now, please let me know if EchoVNC ends up being more useful for you. cheers, Scott On Sep 9, 2005, at 5:30 AM, Ted Barham wrote: Scott, Basically I'd like to be able to access my home PC (and network) while I'm on the road or while I'm at work. I'm not sure what other information I could provide that might allow you to help me figure out what's wrong. I followed the instructions for setting up connections and partnerships, but most of the other settings I left at default. I didn't have any installation problems, and the software has never crashed. I have ZoneAlarm firewall on my home PC and Norton firewall on my laptop, but I gave full access for Kaboodle, WinVNC, and Zebedee on both systems so the software firewalls probably aren't the problem. However, for whatever reason, when I was using my laptop at home (thru a wireless connection) it did allow me to have the main desktop as master and the laptop as master as well. That's when I was able to do a connection from the desktop to the laptop (but not the other way around). I guess this points to a problem with the network setup? -Original Message- From: Scott C. Best [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 08, 2005 7:15 PM To: Ted Barham Cc: kaboodle-user@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: Re: [Kaboodle-user] Kaboodle won't connect? Ted: Heya. Sounds like you have some things a bit jumbled (not your fault; that part of Kaboodle *is* a bit jumbled). When two or more PC's are on the same LAN, only one of them (ie, the "Master Node") can participate in a LAN-to-LAN GetEngaged connection. So if your PC and laptop are on the same LAN, only one of them can be the "Master Node", and so you won't be able to make a GetEngaged connection between them. If your laptop and PC are on *different* LANs (ie, one on the LAN, one connected via dialup), they can both become "Master Nodes", and they can then make a GetEngaged connection with each other. As for the KaboodleProxy capability, it can be used to help facilitate the GetEngaged connection -- it's an alternative to doing port-forwarding. If you've already port-forwarded for the PC on the LAN, you won't need to use KaboodleProxy (though it will still work, of course). Lastly...what *is* the "connection you really care about"? If you just want to connect from one Windows PC to another Windows PC across the Internet regardless of firewalling, you should try EchoVNC: "http://www.echovnc.com";. It connects just to PC's together, whereas Kaboodle attempts to connect two LAN's together. hope that helps, Scott On Thu, 8 Sep 2005, Ted Barham wrote: I just discovered Kaboodle yesterday and excitedly installed it on my home computer, my work computer and my laptop. And I verified that Zebedee was running. But so far I've only been able to make a connection from my home PC to my laptop - not the connection I really care about. And even that connection may not have been a good test since both PCs were on the same network at the time. What I really want to do is connect from my laptop to my computer at home, or from my work computer to my home computer. But trying to connect I always get a message along the lines of "Sorry...your GetEngaged partner could not be connected with via any of your KaboodleProxy connections." Is the problem my firewall settings, or should the demo proxy allow connections beyond a firewall? I'd gladly purchase the $25 software that allows connecting behind a firewall, but only if I'm fairly certain that it will fix my current problem. Tyler: Let me look thru the logs...exactly what email address are you using on both sides of the connection? The usual reasons for seeing the error you're seeing: 1. The Zebedee server is not running for some reason. If you go to "Setup -> GetEngaged", the main screen will show you if Zebedee is running or not. 2. You've installed the same registration file on both sides of the connection. Each endpoint needs a unique Registration file, and each partnership for each endpoint needs a unique Partnership file. cheers, Scott On May 26, 2005, at 7:16 PM, Tyler West wrote: I am using GetEngaged and using demo Kaboodle Server as the proxy. Re: [Kaboodle-user] kaboodle proxy
Peter: Heya. The echoServer lisens to TCP 1138 by default. The Microsoft ISA server probably blocks outgoing traffic to any "non standard" TCP port -- ie, ports not associated with the common applications of web browsers, FTP, DNS, etc. So try this: run your echoServer on TCP-443. Then just add a ":43" to the end of the server address, for example: my.proxy.address:443 Please let me know if that works for you! cheers, Scott On May 22, 2005, at 3:02 AM, Peter Gower wrote: Hi I have Kaboodle proxy set up on my home network not a problem. Re: [Kaboodle-user] "Stop Check" not clickable
Kelly: Heya. The "Stop Check" button should become clickable only while Kaboodle is trying to auto-detect for VNC servers on a target PC. Once it's done checking, the button should "grey-out" again. Similarly, the "Connect" button will be greyed-out when Kaboodle doesn't think there's a VNC server running on the target PC (ie, there's nothing to "connect" to). As for the Install button...that capability has been deactivated for the 1.0 release. I hope to fix it for 1.1. As for PC's beyond the local subnet, you'll need to setup a "mini VPN". Re: [Kaboodle-user] does Kaboodle just store proxy server ip address, or does it store server name somewhere?
David: Heya. Some answers below: As per our previous discussions I am now using the widows echoserver and the fqdn for it maps to a dynamic ip. I see that when the echoserver authenticates it then drops the name of the proxy server and just stores the ip address. It looks like it stores it in the registry, and then retrieves it on next startup. This leads me to several questions: 1) If my IP address changes, even though my dynamic dns client from no-ip.com adjusts for that, I don't see that kaboodle would be able to pick this up, since I don't see it storing the server name? Kaboodle does mistakingly store the list of proxy servers as IP addresses, not as FQDN's. We'll fix that. Then when it starts up, it'll reconnect correctly, even if the FQDN resolves to a different IP address (e.g., dynamic-DNS). 4) In any event, is there a way that I could preconfigure the kaboodle install - to send to a customer with the proxy server name and/or ip address already added? If it read from a config file I could change the config file. If I have to write to the registry, then I could figure out how to do that programmatically.. don't know how but obviously there must be a way. It's a good idea, but not yet supported. That goes onto a second list. :) cheers, Scott --- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. Details about that here: http://www.kaboodle.org/kpdemo_setup.html I would try #2 first as that's easier, in my opinion. As for the DEBUG files, please only worry about those if Kaboodle crashes or generates an error on startup. Once you do #1, those errors should go away (the next version of Kaboodle will do #1 automatically). Re: [Kaboodle-user] Rookie Kaboodle Questions
Frank: Heya.Unfortunately...when Kaboodle is used to connect two networks together, you can't yet "map a drive" across the connection. That's a feature I plan on adding soon, but it's not there yet. Once we do, you'll be able to perform automated remote backups. And it's an interesting idea: designating another LAN to be "auto-connected". Right now, every VPN connection must be done "manually", even for re-connection. It would be useful if those connections could be full automatic though. Thanks for the suggestion! -Scott On Nov 6, 2004, at 8:54 PM, Frank Clavelli wrote: Scott. I thank you very much for your reply. The reason I want to permanently connect the two LANs together is to perform automated remote backups. As you stated, if the IP address changes, the Kaboodle personal VPN connection would break. This would cause the backups to fail. Would Kaboodle automatically re-establish a VPN connection if the backup application attempts to connect to a computer on another LAN or does the connection need to be manually made before the application is used?
