[lace] Red wine stains
Dare I suggest one of the oxidising bleaches like 'Vanish', which remove stains but not colour. Contains no chlorine and is available in two types - one for whites (which I don't use) and one for whites and coloured (which I do). I haven't used it on anything valuable, but as someone who has returned to her childhood and really needs a bib when eating, it gets everything out of my cotton tops that I spill including red wine, blackcurrant juice, strawberry juice and curry sauce. They've all dried before I put them in the washing machine. Sometimes I do a spot treatment with it, but only on the rare occasion when the stain hasn't been removed fully in a normal wash. Hello Ruth, I think the success of the treatment depends on a couple of things I know this and I did as described. By the way the stains have gone after washing the tablecloth as i always do. Ok next time I use perhaps nothing than washing or all the salt I can found in my kitchen ;-)) Greetings to all and be aware of red wine stains Ilske - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[lace] Forthcoming exhibition
Botanica Erotica: proposed exhibition at NT Library Mezzanine Gallery Monday Novemeber 26 start with launch Wednesday 28 GENERAL PROPOSAL: A collaborative exhibition between nine artists and the Northern Territory Library, that explores the erotic and sensual aspects of botanica. Almost every culture has a tradition of celebrating the erotic and sensual within the botanical world. Botanical forms have been used to symbolise gender, generative energy, fertility, love, lust, and sexual union. This symbolism is usually widely recognised within culture and is considered to be deeply significant. It is however also frequently linked to sly humour and irreverent laughter. The nine artsists proposed for this exhibition work across a wide range of media and processes and the concept of developing works that will be shown in collaboration with the library's resources is exciting. Proposed participants: Kaye Aldenhoven: poet David Collyer: composer and lace-maker Jackie Fleet: painter Tessa Pauling: porcellaine, ceramics Helen Peake: sculptural jewellery Bilha Smith: black-fired ceramics Lillian Smith: textile artist Geoff Sharples: sculptor Estelle Virgen: hand-made books, photography NT Library: works from the Library Collection David ion Ballarat - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] Midwest Fiber Fair
I forgot to write about my shawl pin class yesterday. It was great. I am not the best metal worker in the world, but I did come away with about 6 pins in copper and brass. The class was with Leslie Wind, you can see what we made at www.lesliewind.com/ She was an excellent teacher. Now I have something else I can make for my table at the next craft sale, and Leslie gave us plenty of wire as she did not want to ship it back east so I will have to think up my own designs. Instead of doodling lace designs I will be thinking in wire for a while. All those that wrote and said I was paying for the experience were right and I really enjoyed it. I did not win at the art show but got lots of compliments on my lace. The guy who was supervising the room liked to listen in to the comments when people realised my cake was fibre and not real. He got a kick from the low calorie, high fiber birthday cake title. A quilt won, followed by two felted pieces. I guess bobbin lace needs more exposure and I doubt the judges knew much about the subject. I did meet a number of ladies who had traveled long distances to take the beginning BL class, as far as Texas, from Arachne Sylvie Nguyen and a number of them said she was the best teacher they had taken a class from at the fair. That was before they knew I was a friend. g They were impressed that the kits provided were good, including bobbins wound because of the number of newbies, and that she and her helper were very knowledgeable. I also got to meet Galina Khlmeleva who was teaching a shawl knitting class under the next canopy to our metal class. She will be one of our teachers next year so it was nice to meet someone I was corresponding with. I finally couldn't resist on Sunday and I bought two lots of yarn, then I managed to buy a hank of variegated bobbly mohair in the silent auction. So I guess I was a winner after all! I hope that it does become an annual event for the midwest as it was wonderful. [lace] OT: flooding in England, y'all OK
If you look at a map of England Scotland and Wales, most of the current flooding is in the middle to the right of Wales. The average rainfall there for July is around 35mm (1.4 inches), but 135 mm (5.3 inches) fell in one 24 hour period with more rain added to it on other days. Last week it was further up above Wales and there's some to the left of London. We're all getting a lot of rain, but fortunately most of us haven't had the real deluges that this area got. Some of the areas that are flooded have no power and no clean water. Bottled water is being taken in where people can still stay in the area. Many communities have been evacuated, including one elderly lady who was thrilled to have been saved by being winched into a helicopter while cuddling her dog. Helicopters are being used a lot for evacuation, as are boats. We were shown one man who refused to leave because he was afraid his dog would drown - he and his dog were safely rescued. A young woman was really upset when she managed to get to her house to find her two cats had drowned. Many people have lost everything and a large number have no flood insurance, either because they didn't think it would happen to them or because they didn't realise (some because their houses had been built on a flood plain, and that is going to continue to be done). The water in some places was over the roofs of cars. If any Arachneans are in the flooded areas, they're unlikely to be able to contact the list, but I'm sure we all wish them well anyway. Re: [lace] IOLI Membership Message/e-mail list
I don't mind one way or another - but... the IOLI organisation is big enough that it should consider an inhouse system of notifying members, surely it shouldn't be that difficult - could be an agenda item at the coming convention, if someone would step forward to volunteer to help the membership chair (and I'm not member, but have lots of free advice ...). If you have renewal times that happen 4 periods of a year, the membership database can be set to do a reminder message the period before the respective renewal for those with e-mail. Or - you could swing the whole entreprise to one renewal time only, a temporary headache, but in the long run easier to administer I should think (see? lots of free advice...) Another free suggestion: that IOLI have a member forum via the website, to encourage communication - it does require someone to administer it, though this is pleasant volunteer time. Other groups have them and can be set up to be private for members only. On 7/23/07, Laurie J. Hughes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: *Please let me know if this is NOT alright with you all. Hello Daphne Thank you for thinking of me. The village where I live is quite high up, so no problems with the flooding but many of the surrounding areas have been quite badly flooded especially Castleford. My daughter and her family live in Pickering which was badly flooded but fortunately not where they live. In a message dated 7/16/07 2:46:48 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I must correct the impression that Jeri is giving, the EG magazine, Embroidery, is talking of the collection at the Museum of Costume and Textiles in Nottingham, the museum is now closed to the public but all of their collections may be viewed by private appointment with Jeremy, he also still runs 'hands on' days based on a particular theme, details of these can be found in the local What's on in Nottingham Guide. Jeremy Farrell is still the curator of the museum and the address given is that of the museum.. Dear Friends of Lace, This is to apologize if I mis-led you with my memo about the Embroiderers' Guild article regarding the museum lace collections in Nottingham: In the current July/August 2007 issue of Embroidery - the official magazine of Embroiderers' Guild in the UK, there is a 6-page article starting on page 40, Nottingham Museums. (No mention of the Trent University project.) There is also a photo and article on page 49 about a hollie point sampler in the Embroiderers' Guild collection. Perhaps there are members of EG within UK lace clubs, and you can read their copy of the magazine for more information. --- As you can see, I tried to make it clear I was writing about the museums in Nottingham, not about Trent University. It was my intent to give information that would be helpful to anyone planning a visit to Nottingham - contact information that could be used while planning a visit. This was because we have (in recent years) lamented the museum situation in Nottingham -- the closing of one excellent museum being of most concern to members of Arachne. So concerned were we, that many of us participated in a letter writing campaign to save that museum. By quoting as much as possible from the EG article, I hoped it would sit in Arachne archives until someone needed to reference it for a web site or telephone number. There is so much printed reference material in my resource collection that it has become difficult to find a specific publication when a question is raised on Arachne months after it has been put in storage. Hoping all the lovely lace collections we love to visit in the UK are safe from floods this week. And also, that no lacemakers have suffered a loss from the heavy rains. [lace] IOLI and PayPal
Thanks Clay and Laurie, Is this something new? I looked back at my Spring issue and didn't see anything. I'm still waiting on my Summer to arrive. No doubt it will soon as it's been a couple of weeks since everyone else received theirs. As thankful as I am for our APO getting our mail to us here in Belgium, magazines are not a priority. Regardless, I'm glad to hear that I can pay via PayPal and as I remember renewing either just before or after I arrived here last year, I'm sure it's time again. And I think I've answered everyone privately who responded to my questions regarding Flanders snowflakes with twists before pins or after as well as my pin/pillow question but in case I've missed someone, I appreciate the replies. It seems it probably doesn't matter whether the twists are made before or after placing the pin as long as it's consistent throughout the piece. And as I've moved on to the large snowflake sample where the pins are not always closed, it makes more sense to add the twists before placing the pins. -at least in my mind. Still don't know why my pins tarnished so quickly in my straw pillow, but a browse through the archives brought up the recipe for cleaning brass pins and it worked wonders. Thanks all. [lace] Re: Lace at Sweet Briar
I needed to come out and let you all know about the wonderful time that was had by all at the first Lace at Sweet Briar, in Virginia this past week. After finally wending my way home across the country, I should add my little bit. I took Elizabeth's class, and we had a lot of fun. We had an antique dealer and two embroiderers, as well as lacemakers, so we had a wide variety of viewpoints. The old lace -- both the Barber-Connin collection and the private collections the attendees brought -- were fascintating to study. We had so much of it that we wanted the other classes to see it also, so we set up a lace exhibit on Thursday evening which was well attended. Just after everyone had taken a look, and the lacing classes went back to their pillows, a thunder/lightning/rain storm hit and took out the lights to the exhibit area. The lacing classes still had light, so they just continued on, but the study group closed the exhibit. Michael told me the name of my Binche handkerchief pattern, and gave me a 5 minute lesson on Binche patterns. I peeked into his classroom a couple times a day to see what everyone was working on. The sales room was well attended. I spent more than I had planned to...but that always happens. G Some of the new books were irresistible. The facilities are great, and the food very good. The campus is beautiful, and very large -- 3200 acres. It used to be a plantation. The museum is small and has varied things in it. It was a fun week. Look for information on next year's retreat later in the year. It's worth considering in your summer schedule. We're dry, our house is on high ground, but other parts of Tamworth have been affected, roads closed, etc. Getting to my Newton Regis class and back tonight was a case of (DH) driving through water - yesterday it would have been impassible. At least this time the warnings were early enough for the pub in the middle of this to get the sandbags in place on Saturday and declare Sunday closed. The swans are enjoying the extension to their normal territory on the two rivers that run through the town centre, where the flood plains are about field width and well and truly under water. After round one, our local paper printed photographs from years past, when the town centre flooded on a regular basis, most winters. Work has been done on the storm drains since, but the rivers still decide who goes where! Has anyone heard anything from Angela Thompson recently, Worcester has been hard hit but I think she is up on higher ground? I know she had problems when Worcester flooded last year. -- Jane Partridge - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Dona - On page 17 of the current issue, there is a lovely statement just below the IOLI Trust display which states that IOLI accepts PayPal! Clay -- Clay Blackwell Lynchburg, VA USA -- Original message -- From: Dona B. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Laurie, I'm all in favor of saving paper! Is there a way that IOLI can set up a PayPal acct. so that in the future we can just e-mail you our form and make a payment via PayPal? Saves paper, envelope and stamp. Thanks for all your hard work! [lace-chat] IOLI and PayPal
Thanks all.
