[lace] left handed hitches

2020-02-28 Thread Elizabeth Pass
The talk of problem hitches, left-handed winding, anti-clockwise etc. reminds
me of the time that I used teach children on Saturday mornings. (I did it for
sixteen and a half years). One girl had great trouble winding clockwise, so I
suggested that she look at the head of the bobbin and imagine that it was a
clock face, then check with the electric wall clock. The second hand would show
the direction to wind the thread. This proved to be a success - no more
anti-clockwise and the hitch stayed put. One day the hitch wouldn't stay, and
the bobbin thread kept lengthening, the bobbin had been wound anti-clockwise. I
asked, "Did you look at the clock?" "Yes," she answered. I looked at the clock.
It was going backwards!

[lace] Bukingham Lace Industry

2019-10-06 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello Arachnes,

I've been given a pricking of a very large, two piece, Bucks collar, each
piece maximum 7inches by 18 inches. The pricking has been rubber stamped as
follows - Buckingham lace Industry, Moreton Manor House, Buckingham. Does
anyone have any information about this?

Devon, I've not come across the word 'diaper' in this context before (I thought
it was a word used in the US for baby's nappies!), has it any other meanings?

Re: [lace] Vintage pattern books

2018-01-22 Thread ELIZABETH PASS
Hello everyone,

Unfortunately my copy of DMC Les Dentelles aux Fuseau has no indication of
date. However I have five copies of Therese de Dillmont's Encyclopedia of
Needlework. There seem to be a lot of modern reprints, one of which is so poor
that the pictures have reproduced very badly. BUT I have a very early copy and
hand-written on title page is "Holmes, Windermere, 1895." I have used this to
compare pictures with the reprint.

I actually have five copies in all - two pocket ones, Jan 1922 and Oct 1932; ,
one larger French copy from July 1923 and the modern reprint which dates from
1996, the third edition by Running Press. This has been edited in some places
to more up to date English, and also hes some extra bits such as Mediterranean
needlelace.

The larger English one I believe is the earlier version of the Encycopedia
which was originally published in 1884 and has quite a few differences from the
later ones. The owner wrote her surname, place and date on the flyleaf,
"Holmes, Windermere, 1895." Is this the oldest?

I have a large data base somewhere in the depths of the computer with many
other Dillmont's Encyclopedias listed.

Best wishes

Dear Lacemakers,

Regarding https://www.laceguild.org/ pages

Before the website format that Jean and David Leader created disappears,
back on January 12th I suggested you print a copy of the home page and tuck
it in one of the lace books Jean wrote. Printing may work for you, but
when I tried to do it - the page printed, but the black lace tie space was
blank. Jean has been consulted and gives the following advice - if others
are
having the same problem:

"You need to do a screen shot to get the black lace tie because of the way
David set up the page. I don't know how to do that on Windows, but I'm
sure someone will be able to tell you."

Re: [lace] Hermitage Russia and Buckingham Palace, London

2016-08-14 Thread ELIZABETH PASS
Hello Nathalie,

We visited the Hermitage Museum 3 years ago and I only saw one piece of lace,
and that was a simple Torchon edging to a cover of some description.
Unfortunately I don't read or speak Russian so I can't say what it was for.

The museum is vast and very busy. We were on a guided tour, so were hundreds
(no exaggeration) of others, so didn't have much time to stop and admire. That
said, I would go again if I had the chance.

You'll find a good selection of the lace from the Hermitage if you try this
website and put 'lace' into the serch box.

Yesterday I went to Buckingham Palace to see the special exhibition. This year
it displays clothing belonging to the Queen throughout her life. Her wedding
dress is there and also her Coronation Robe. There is a whole range of dresses
and outfits for formal and informal occasions; weddings, ceremonial; state
banquets, royal visits to foreign countries, etc. Many of the dresses are
accompanied by photos showing them being worn and descriptions of the occasion.

Although there are no foreign language description in the display cases, you
can borrow a personal gadget (like a smart phone) which has masses of
informaton in several languages with photos, videos, commentries and maps. Off
hand I think there was English, Spanish, French, Chinese, German, Russian,
maybe others too. The guide book was also published in the same(?) languages.
Added to that, many of the stewards are young people from different
backgrounds, wearing lapel badges if they speak languages other than English.
They are all very friendly and knowledgeable too.

Some friends and I visit the palace every summer. This year we've been lucky
as the railway company has a special offer of day return tickets for £16, much
cheaper than the usual £40+. But I'm tired today!

Re: [lace] Joining lace

Hello Ann,

Try to get hold of a book called "Practical Skills in Bobbbin Lace" by Bridget
M Cook. There is a whole section entitled "Completions, ending and finishings"
which has several suitable methods for finishing where there is a large amount
of ground - not totally invisible, but less obvious than darning in lots of
ends.

You should be able to borrow the book from the Lace Guild if you are a member.

Good luck,

Spanish lace pins.

Traditional lace making pins that were originally colour coded for following a

I have recently received the transcript of an English will from 1630.
Elizabeth Lougher was a widow, whose husband,
Robert, died in 1624. They had at least
one daughter and five grandchildren.

Amongst the bequests (original spelling) were:

·
A petticoat with Philip and cheney and
with .. coloured lace and the feather bed and boulster on which I lye

·
a paire of curtaines and a vallance of
greene layce,

·
a paire of red and greene layce cushens

A lot of the will deals with furnishing textiles, particularly bed linen,
pillows etc.

Can anyone give me a clue as to what kind of lace might be
referred to? I’m especially intrigued by
the mention of coloured lace.

[lace] french lace pillow

2015-08-28 Thread ELIZABETH PASS
Hello Everyone,

I watched Who do you think you are last night when Derek Jacobi went to Paris
to find out more about his 6X grandfather who was a Huguenot. The historian at
the Protestant Historical Society of Paris showed him an etching of some of the
atrocities which were perpetrated and in the corner of the picture I thought I
saw a lace maker. It was such a short view that I coudn't be sure.

So today I've been watching BBC I Player and there it is, about 19-20 minutes
into the programme, in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. You'll be
able to see it clearly if you pause the picture.

I'm sorry that you won't be able to watch if you are outside UK - it's
something to do with needing a BBC licence.

[lace] spanish bobbins

2014-09-17 Thread elizabeth pass
Hello everyone,

Can any of you tell me what kind of bobbins are used in Majorca? I've
searched the internet without much luck. They have been described to me as
having no neck or beads, about 1cm wide and 10-12cm long. They are suitable
for a lady who has arthritis, does sewing in her lace and needs to find more
of the same.

Best wishes,

Re: [lace] lace style sheet, was lace proof readers

2014-05-20 Thread elizabeth pass
When in doubt I consult the Oxford Spelling Dictionary (it has British and
American spelling) , which lists the following:

lace

laces

laced

lacing

lacemaker /s

lacemaking (but the spell checker on this computer wants to spell it lace
making or lovemaking!)

lace-pillow /s

Similarly, needle follows the same pattern, although neither needlelace nor
needle lace are listed.

Bobbin /s but bobbin lace.

Confusingly, my very large dictionary (not Oxford) uses hyphens in
lace-maker and lace-pillow.

It seems that You pays your money and takes your pick.

I taught Improve Your English to adults for 15 years, with emphasis on
grammar, spelling and handwriting. When there was choice my advice always
was, Be consistent and don't change from one form to the other in the same
piece of writing. I suppose you could give the same piece of advice to
beginner lace makers.

With regard to lace or laces, context can help decide which to use. A box
of laces could mean shoelaces or even shoe-laces.

Dear Adele,

Thank you so much for letting us know about this video. I was so surprised
when I saw the lady who was talking about Honiton Lace - Val was one of my
students in my early lace teaching days. She started with Torchon and
progressed to Bedfordshire. Then she moved - to Honiton no less, where
Cynthia Voysey became her teacher. Val had one big advantage over me - she
is short sighted, so she just removed her glasses and could see what she was
doing. Even with mine on I struggle with Honiton and prefer to enlarge the
patterns by 200%!

[lace] New podcast from the Royal Collection

2011-07-22 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello everyone,

I thought you might like to see/hear a podcast from The Royal Collection.
The section on the wedding dress lasts for about six minutes and if you
choose Audio with images, there are lots of close-up photos of the lace,
especially on the skirt and train.

The Royal Collection curator Caroline de Guitaut talks about the intricate
craftsmanship of the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding dress.

http://www.royalcollection.org.uk

There are other photos on this website - I really liked the one where you
could see the pins holding the lace in position on the gazar.

I can't get to the Palace until September this year, so I'm having to buy a
new ticket as last year's will be out of date by then. If you time your
visit carefully you can get free entry for a year (although Buckingham
Palace is only open from the end of July until early October.) A friend and
I go every year and see old favourites as well as each new special
exhibition. Last year we had afternoon tea on the terrace overlooking the
lawns where the Queen holds her garden parties each summer.

I'll let you know what I think in September.

RE: [lace] Glass Bobbins on ebay - Diane Miller?

2009-10-29 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello Jean,

It's just the box that has a Brian and Diane Miller 'label' in it.

Diane painted bone bobbins and miniature paintings but Brian made a variety
of items, pen holders, paperweights etc where he encapsulated leaves,
flowers, even dandelion clocks in some sort of clear acrylic. They were
sold in good quality presentation boxes and the Millers took great care
about displaying the item. These glass bobbins are just in the box for safe
keeping, I should think.

I've got a couple of their boxes but what's in them now was made by me.

RE: [lace] Dillmont again - to Liz Pass in Poole, Dorset

2009-10-18 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello Lucie ( and Lynn)

From your description, it appears that you have a French edition. The
earliest French edition that I have details for was dated Oct 1909, when
630,000 copies had been printed. I don't have the number of pages for this
one, which is the larger size, but the 1924 pocket size contained 828. So
it appears that your book predates 1909.

I keep looking for more clues to dates - the best so far was a English
version which had a handwritten inscription - Holmes, Windermere, 1895. I
believe the first book was published in 1886.

Hope this helps a bit,

Good Morning all,

Take a look at this page - http://www.guildofneedlelaces.org/Sales.html - it
shows a modern aficot (pronounced 'aff ee co' a bit like picot, with the
stress on the first syllable.) Make sure that you scroll down at least half
way to find it.

By the way, if anyone needs a good introductory book, the first on the page

[lace] Dating Therese de Dilmont

2009-06-29 Thread Elizabeth Pass
My thanks to the many listers who replied to me both on and off list. I
will be a few days updating my data base.

There seem to be a lot of modern reprints. I have one which is so poor that
the pictures have reproduced very badly. BUT I have a very early copy and
hand-written on title page is Holmes, Windermere, 1895. I have used this
to compare pictures with the reprint.

I actually have five copies in all - two pocket ones, one larger English,
one larger French and the modern reprint.

What a wonderful book! I have referred to it for all sorts of things - even
the dreaded Roseground ( well it was when I first started lace.) In fact,
for about two years, every time I needed to do Roseground, out would come
the little book. If you know the book, you will realise how difficult it is
to follow in places - the pricking on one page, picture on another and
word for word instructions elsewhere. I used to get my daughter to read out
a line, then work the lace, then Anne would read another line and so on.

Now it's time to get to the lace pillow.

Once again,
Many thanks
And if anyone else wants to send any details please do.

RE: [lace] Dillmont dating

2009-06-28 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello Diana,

If your book has the number 630, it was published in June 1930. Check that
it also says 1,260,000 copies published and has 813 pages. It seems
that many book sellers had their own business details on the cover. One of
mine comes from WH Smith, the other has no further details on it.

I've been collating these books for some years and so far have established
that there were 18 editions in English covering the years 1895 (handwritten
by the first owner) up to 1955. I've also got a modern reprint and I've
details of 5 French editions and 2 German.

If anyone has the Encyclopedia of Needlework by Th. de Dillmont and wants to
send to send me the details, I'd like to know the number at the bottom on
the reverse of the title page, the number of copies published and the number
of pages as well as the size. There was a 'pocket' edition and another
twice the size. If there are any other details such as the bookseller, I'd
be interested in that too.

Best wishes,

RE: [lace] Edgings

2009-04-29 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello Ann,

I realise that you've already started your lace but here's a idea for
another time.

One way to get a ruffled edging is to use a circular pricking and keep going
around until you have the desired 'straight' measurement along the foot
side. This gives a nice effect without too much gathering and does away
with the need for moving the lace on the pricking.

I would enclose the start and finish ends within the side seam - it won't be
that thick in point ground lace.

Whenever I'm not sure if a word exists, I check the Oxford Dictionary of

Other 'lace' entries are;

There's no sign of lacer, although American spellings are included if

RE: [lace] lace on hankies

2009-03-15 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello Spiders,

Janice wrote that she made the lace very slightly larger than the actual
hankie and eased the fabric along the sides and corners to make the lace
fit.

This reminded me of the first Bucks hankie edging that I made. I originally
had planned to make a sample, but I was enjoying it so much that I decided
to continue it into a square. I was so pleased with it that I wanted to
enter it into the County Craft show, so I began to mount the lace on to an
oversize piece of fine cotton fabric. That's when I discovered that three
sides had 12 heads and the fourth side had 13!! I had lots of 'fun'
stretching three sides and easing the fourth one on to the carefully pulled
thread square.

Funnily enough the judge didn't notice that there were too many repeats in
one edge. She only saw my straight start which I did because it was only
going to be a sample.

Since that day I've never been worried what judges think of my work. I know
my faults and always say, I'll do it better next time.

RE: [lace] Spare thread

2008-07-13 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello Wendy,

I don't think there is any need to worry about 'mixing' the thread. I
presume you will be using the same make, colour and weight of thread.
You've noticed that the bit you unwound was kinked, but it wouldn't have
seemed kinked if you'd carried on the same piece of lace.

I often continue to use bobbins that are already wound, as long as I need
the same thread. If there is a long length of thread, I wind off about half
on to an empty bobbin, make the hitch and use the pair as any normal pair.
When all the 'new' pairs begin to run out, I join on any bobbins that
weren't long enough to make a pair in the first place.

It's not that I'm mean with thread (yes I am!) but I detest winding bobbins.
Added to that, my time is precious so I like to have as much as I can
actually making the lace.

The kinks will not be apparent in the finished lace if you have good
tension.

RE: [lace] Glass Character Divider Pins

2007-10-28 Thread Elizabeth Pass
I've just looked at Martin Tuffnell's site and found it very easy to
navigate. If you want to see what sort of tops can be added to divider
pins, check out - Beads - English made animal beads. I had some of these
quite a few years ago, and bobbins too.

RE: [lace] Beautiful vintage table doilie in needle lace

2007-10-02 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hi Alessandra,

Yes, this is needlelace. It's typical of Chinese production. I'm not sure
that it is vintage though. In 1993 I bought a new table cloth very similar
to this in Australia and it was clearly marked Made in China. I think
you had a good price too. My cloth is on my dining room table; it gets
hand-washed frequently and is just recently showing signs of needing a few
stitches to repair some breaks. I hope you enjoy your cloth as much as I
enjoy mine.

RE: [lace] smile! it's a raffle...a memory raffle

2007-08-16 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hi Debbie,

I remember Mr Harrison very well - all those suitcases that he brought, full
to the brim, wooden bobbins in one, bone in another and goodness knows what
in the rest. He just opened them up and tipped them out. I believe I was
Chairman of Poole Bobbin Lace Circle at the time and we had invited him to
be a supplier at our lace day.

I won't enter your raffle, Debbie - I will have bought more than a few
(probably wooden bobbins) at that lace day and one or two other occasions
when I met him. I'll let others have a better chance of winning.

Good luck to all who enter,

Hello everyone,

Just to let you know that there is still time to enter the 100th Exhibition
of the Dorset Arts and Crafts Association. Entry forms must be received by
Monday 16th July and you can download these from the following website.

http://www.dorsetartsandcrafts.org/

If there is any problem about delivering your entries on handing-in day, I
can do that for you.

How about a repeat of the 'Picnic' when some of us met up last year on the
final day of the exhibition. This year it's Tuesday 31st July.
Let me know if you're interested.

RE: [lace] dutch girl or boy in lace

Hi Andrea,

I have a piece of lace about 5-6 square which shows two Dutch children, boy
and girl, kissing. If it would be any help, I could scan it for you. You
might be able to use the print-out instead if a pricking. (This is what I
did years ago when I saw an enlarged photo of something I liked.) It worked
quite well. I'm not sure how to describe the finished piece of lace - it's
certainly not tape, torchon or Milanese. The figures, mostly cloth stitch,
are set in a square plaited mesh.

Best wishes,

RE: [lace] Lace Buttons - Birds eye buttons

Hello Jean,

I've just got in from our lace class at Broadstone and am catching up with
the e-mails. I've got both these books, Jean. Very good they are too. The
author is Marion Howitt, who was taught by Thelma Johns. Birds Eye buttons
are very easy to make. I wonder if the Dorset ones are the same as the
original enquiry. If you look at the Fact File page you will see Birds Eyes
in the middle column, second and third down, and second down on the right
hand column. They are soft buttons not having a horn disc or metal ring
inside, so were often used on baby clothes.

I came on the following site, which has books and kits for
sale for these buttons.

PS Just got the Apr/May edition of 'Stitch' which has an article about
Dorset Feather Stitchery, developed from the embroidery on agricultural
labourers' smocks. One Photo clearly shows Cartwheel buttons.

RE: [lace] bucks garter lace

Hi Sue,

I've made lots of garters and always work on 27 inches as a good length,
working to the nearest pattern repeat. I've done one sided and two sided
garters, depending on the amount of time available, but concentrated on one
sided since I heard that two sided were tarts' garters! The garter can be
worn any where from just above the knee to the top of the leg, but if the
bride is going to expose it for the photographs, just above the knee is
best.

I have been working my bucks point garter strip of lace (Wedding Bells, in

wondering what others who have made bucks point garters would consider a
sensible length. I was thinking 30 inches and using ribbon approx 1 inch on
one edge and not in the centre.

Dear Seller. I am a lace maker but the tools concerned have nothing to do

But the seller doesn't agree.

Thank you for taking the time to email me. I will add this information at

As Nottingham is the home of machine lace in England, it sounds to me like
the lace bobbin is the large spool used on the machines.

The predominant British reel was called the Nottingham reel, based on the

[lace] Silk thread

2006-08-20 Thread Elizabeth Pass
At present I'm using Piper's spun silk 140/2 to work a pattern called Cameo.
It's from 'A Visual Introduction to Bucks Point Lace' by Geraldine Stott.

I'm making a rectangle to put on the cover of a photo album which will be
covered in creamy, silky material, slightly padded. Inside there will be
photos of all the babies who have been christened in the Poole Robe. The
present album is looking rather tired. It's one of those where you lifted a
thin clear plastic film and placed the photo underneath. After 20 or so
years the backing card has discoloured so it's about time for a revamp.

[lace] Arachnes living and holidaying in Dorset

Hello ,

The Poole Arachnes ( me, Beryl, who lurks, and Jean Nathan) and Jane are
meeting up tomorrow (8th Aug) at the Dorset Arts and Crafts Show,
Bovington Middle School, not far from Wool and Monkey World. If anyone is
in the vicinity we'd love to meet you in person. (Not everyone on the list
can afford time or money to go to Prague and IOLI, more's the pity.)

The website is here:

Full details can be found at http://www.dorsetartsandcrafts.org/ although
not everything has been updated.

The show was established in the early 20th century and this year is the
92nd exhibition (suspended during the war years). There are classes for all
kinds of crafts as well as Fine Art and Photography. There is even a
section for traditional Dorset crafts - buttons, bonnets, smocks and Dorset
featherstitch.

There are also sales - it's the time to buy those special presents (unique
work), as well as books and general needlework and patchwork supplies. The
exhibition is well worth seeing; refreshments usually delicious; and many
crafts people demonstrating. I will be there myself on the 8th,
demonstrating bobbin lace.

RE: [lace] bobbin lace beads

2006-08-02 Thread Elizabeth Pass
In my experience half stitch doesn't have workers. I prefer to use a fine
crochet hook, pass the bead on to it, pull through one bobbin thread (
worker or passive, which ever is appropriate for the design) and transfer
the bead to the thread loop, then pass the second bobbin through the loop.
Sometimes I tie the pair of threads, sometimes I don't need to.

If you are working in half-stitch, and assuming they are round beads, it
would be easiest to thread them on to the worker and push the beads into
place as and where you want them.

RE: [lace] Lace pillow maker? on ebay

2006-05-26 Thread Elizabeth Pass
This is an intriguing description for an item on eBay. Firstly does the
seller really mean pillow maker?

I think it should read - Lace maker's pillow.

And what is that around the roller?

It's a piece of Irish crochet. Well it's lace, and it's on a lace pillow.
Could have been tatting instead. You know, they make tatting with bobbins
on a pillow!!! I've met dozens of people when I've been demonstrating
bobbin lace whose grannies did tatting just like you're doing. She made
alter cloths and table cloths too.

As lace makers our mission in life must also be to inform as well as to
educate and entertain. Does this sound a bit like the remit for the BBC?

RE: [lace] Re: Wire as thread /wire as wire (twisting and turning g)

2006-05-25 Thread Elizabeth Pass
If that's so, then what's single-ply wool? Why isn't it
single-strand?

It is correctly called 'singles' , not ply or anything else. But of course
most people don't know this so call it one play as they would two ply, three
ply etc. When I learned to spin thirty years ago, I was taught that after
the first spinning, two, three or more threads could be plied, reversing the
direction of the wheel. Oh what trouble I had!

Hello Malvary and Tamara,

Just one point with regard to the pricking that was on sale on e-bay. It
was originally published as part of a book and therefore if ripped out of
the book would have had another pricking on the back.

By the way, if anyone would like a copy of the toadstool pricking, just
e-mail me and I can send you a scan.

RE: [lace] Breach of copyright?

2006-04-30 Thread Elizabeth Pass
I have been in contact with the seller several times today and her replies
are below.

All the patterns I am selling belonged to my mother who now has alzheimer's
disease and
the are all original purchases she has made from either the Lace Guild or
another source

The next one stated:-

Hi and thank you for your reply. I totally respect your wishes but am
unable to stop the
auction as somebody has bid on the pattern now. I will obviously explain
the position to the
winning buyer and will ensure that the pattern is not sold. My mother is
devastated that she
may have got me into trouble as she has assured me that she bought all the
patterns I am
selling for her but as I pointed out she is not very well.

Whether anyone chooses to believe the explanation is not for me to say.

I've also contacted the bidder to explain the situation. I haven't heard
yet if the seller has, in fact, ensured that the pattern is not sold. My
personal opinion is this: I am well aware that photocopying does go on but
I'm am annoyed to think that someone may be profiting from this - after all,
what does it cost to photocopy? 5p Postage? 29p + cost of envelope. Total
34p. E-bay £2.49. good business.

I await developments.

On a positive note, I will be going to demonstrate at Blandford Georgian
Fair tomorrow. This will mark the destruction by fire of all but 5
buildings in the old town (1731) and its rebuilding in the (then)latest
architectural style. It’s a beautiful country town centre now.

Time to get the stuff together.

[lace] Lace in New Zealand

2005-11-30 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello everyone,

I'm leaving for New Zealand on 15th December to spend three weeks with my
son and his girl friend. My lovely husband is staying at home to look after
the house and cats, and suggested that I take my mother with me. We are
both lacemakers - bobbin and needlelace. Are there any lace related
happenings in the Auckland area around this time?

At that time Pam was making jewellery and I still wear the carnelian pendant

development as a designer. The designs - mostly Torchon - are pleasant,
but not particularly inspiring. She does use colour which, .

This book on e-bay is the same as my Japanese original hard back copy,
except it's in French and paperback. As I can't read Japanese, I can't say
when it was published, but when I go to work next Wednesday, I will ask my
Japanese student. (No, it's not a lace class.)

I'm not surprised that the instructions are rather peculiar . To be
translated more than once will accentuate any problems with technical terms
especially if the translator isn't a lacemaker. I find the diagrams are
very good, perhaps because I don't have to cope with the written
instructions.

By the way, Yusai is a man. My copy is autographed by him and there is a
photo of him at the back of the book. Some twenty or more years ago, he was
taught to make Honiton lace by Elsie Luxton, and when he and his partner,
Saikuo Takana, were in UK for a course with her, some members of Poole
Bobbin lace Circle were delighted to meet these two gentlemen. They
entertained us with traditional Japanese delicacies and wore beautiful
kimonos for the evening.

I have two other books written by him. One is a collaboration with Elsie
Luxton, 'Royal Honiton lace' and the other is called Tambour Lace'

RE: [lace] Re: IOLI contest entries

2005-09-21 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello everyone,
How different things are here in UK!

Tamara P Duvall wrote,

England *alone* is able to sustain 2 nation-wide organisations (Lace Guild
and Lacemakers Circle).

Actually, there are three. The Lace Society predates the Lace Guild, and
many lacemakers belong to all three.

We are so lucky to have many, many lacemakers here in UK, but this has taken
35 years or more for the numbers to build up. In the past we had lots of
encouragement and support from local authorities many of which supported and
provided and subsidised hobby classes. That no longer being the case,
classes are becoming more difficult for the man or woman in the street to
find out about.

You're more likely to pack your car full of gas-sharing friends

This may or may not happen. For committee meetings and conventions, the
organisers and committee members come from all across the country and so the
possibility of car sharing doesn't always arise. Last week, petrol prices
here were nearly £2 PER LITRE. At 4.56 litres to the gallon, the cost
today works out to be £9.12 for a gallon. Today's rate of exchange is
$1.81USD. I'll let you work out the maths for that one! Yes, we would love
to car share whenever possible, especially as government regulations no
longer permit giving the driver a proportion of the cost.

IOLI collects demonstration hours - to maintain its charity status -

As far as I know, this concession doesn't apply to bona fide organisations
with charity status, such as the Lace Guild.

Best wishes to everyone. I'll let you know how much lace I accomplished
during the summer when I get a few more free moments.

Congratulations was [lace] Posting to Arachne

2005-07-13 Thread Elizabeth Pass
As one of the occasional posters from Poole, I thought I should be the one
to let you know the result of Poole Bobbin Lace Circle's Annual Competition.
We have a dozen or so trophies to encourage a wide range of lacemakers to
enter. The best piece of lace is awarded the Rosebowl Trophy. Once this
has been won, the winner cannot win it again. There is a separate section
which can only be entered by previous Rosebowl winners. This ensures that
less experienced members can still enter the competition without feeling
that they haven't got a chance. There are three sections for Young
Lacemakers; a class for those who attend a local authority lace class, (not
sure if there will be many entries for this in future as three teachers have
withdrawn from Adult Education teaching this year) and some other
categories. There is also an award for people who haven't entered any lace
previously - this is a hand engraved goblet, made by the husband of one of
our members some few years ago. All the trophies have to be returned each
year and then prize winners are presented with a commemorative bobbin.

So, what is all this leading up to.

This year's winner of both the Premier Trophy AND the Rosebowl is non other
than Arachne Jean Nathan, who entered a blue, satin ring pillow with a
Torchon lace square covering. It was very pretty and the award was well
deserved. I know that Jean had made this piece for her Lace Guild
Assessment (intermediate I think) and I believe that she may also have
designed it herself.

Congratulations Jean. Well done.

[lace] Hair weaving and free lace workshop

2005-03-13 Thread Elizabeth Pass
I promised that I would ask Pompi Parry about bobbins for hair weaving when
I saw her yesterday. We all had a fantastic time at a workshop day. Just
about everyone managed to reach the bottom of a piece of lace intended for a
wall hanging even if the finishing off had to be done later. We had no
pricking, no working diagram, no design in mind before we started. We had
fifteen, assorted, textured threads, an eight inch copper ring, some very
large bobbins and glass headed pins. The only 'rule' was to move the
threads from one side of the ring to the other, by using half stitch,
tallies, twists, and various grounds. Irregularity was the order of the
day! We all enjoyed the experience immensely.

As to the bobbins for hair weaving. Pompi said that there were two kinds -
some made entirely of lead, the others rather like very elongated tear drops
about three inches long and without a neck. Looks like those on e-bay were
something else.

RE: [lace] Lacemaking classes

2005-02-02 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hi Christine,

Although I work in Adult Education and I also teach bobbin lace, I came out
of that area some five years ago.

Yes, we had an Ofsted inspection last year, and they didn't like what they
saw, although that was on the admin side of things. As a result of the
inspection, either before or after, lots of tutors in all sorts of areas,
did not renew their contracts. Nothing would make me teach lace for Adult
Ed. because of all the paperwork needed. I really can't see how it is
possible to do individual lesson plans, assessment records etc for bobbin
lace, knowing the speed that the work progresses.

I was taught to make samples. This didn't suit my temperament! So when I
started teaching lace ( to children at school) I knew that there had to be
an end product and not just a tiny strip. I have continued in this way with
adults. I only advise making a sample if there is any doubt over choice of
thread or a particular technique that needs to be learned, and even then, I
have probably got a simple pattern which incorporates the technique.

By the way, we are to be re-inspected just before May half term. Needless
to say, we have no lace classes at my centre as the tutor resigned last
Easter and the inspection was the first day of the summer term.

Hope your inspection goes well.

Liz Pass.

I would be very interested to know if other tutors have been put through
this ordeal.

Wish me luck!

I know that Malvary was referring to ILOI and Canadian Gazette but anyone

produced on CD. I bought it at Havant Lace Suppliers Fair and it only cost
£5. As a matter of fact I had already managed to get my hand on some very
early copies but the CD is very easy to access.

On a different note - a very dear lace making friend passed away just before
Christmas and I have been asked to dispose of her lace making equipment etc.
There may be some Lace Guild and Lace Circle magazines coming up shortly.
I'll let you know.

It was her wish that all proceeds from her lace things should be donated to

seem to have collecting buckets for donations to the Tsunami Appeal.

I hope that 2005 will bring peace and happiness to so many distressed people

I have the Luxton-Fukuyama book on Honiton. Half is designs by Luxton, half
are his. All the samples were made by his wife. Both of them did a design
of grapes and grape leaves and it is interesting to see how different the
results are, and they way they chose to represent the plant forms. He has
two crane designs. All of his in this book have a touch of Japanese
artistic style in the designs, which is also very interesting. Most of the
projects are small and do-able. Her most involved is a large rose bouquet
(for the experts).

I think he is the same guy who wrote several books of Flanders designs (at
least I think it is the same person). Lorelei

Because many joinings are needed to complete this sort of lace, beaded
English bobbins would be extremely difficult to use.

No, not 'extremely' difficult, just slower and call for a bit more care.
Beaded bobbins also come in lots of different sizes, so you don't have to

The lace for the competition covered Bedfordshire, Torchon, IrDA (we
recently had a day school in Poole), several pieces designed by Eeva-Liisa
Correlate as well as other modern lace and some needle lace. There wasn't
any Honiton or (from memory) Bucks in the competition. The winning bobbin
lace piece was a dragon in two colours of gold metallic thread. This
pricking was in the Lace Guild magazine many years ago. The other trophy
winner was a Carrick across piece depicting a fuchsia in pinks and green
silk - quite beautiful in its simplicity. Lots of the bobbin lace was in
colour. I especially liked the whippet or was it a greyhound, made mostly
in shades of browns and greys, just shaped whole stitch strips, not really
Honiton technique as far as I could see, joined together and lightly padded
in parts. It was accompanied by a photograph of Bonnie the dog.

Dorothy's students' work covered a wide range of styles including Bucks,
more IrDA, Torchon. I was working a simple fertility handkerchief in Beds.
The wedding took place on Easter Saturday! But as they didn't know anything
about it, I will present it to the 'bride' if ever we get to Malaysia where
the wedding took place and where the couple live.

Well that's all for now, except to say that the show lasts until Tuesday,
closing at 4 o'clock and as well as competition entries there are lots of
genuine crafts on sale, other demonstrations, children's Have-a-go workshops
and wonderful cakes in the refreshment hall!

Go and see it if you can. It's situated at Bovington Middle School, not far
from the village of Wool, close to Monkey World (a rescue centre for
primates and open daily) and Bovington Tank Museum (the most comprehensive
collection of military tanks in the world) so, something for everyone in the
family.

Best wishes,

RE: [lace] Winding bobbins with equal amounts of thread...

2004-07-31 Thread Elizabeth Pass
The disadvantage of winding equal amounts of thread on all the bobbins is
that they will all run out at much the same time!

I never mind joining thread, after all, I wouldn't expect to knit a jumper
without a join or fifteen at least.

Wind the mate with 8 rotations off
the first bobbin, and your pair is equal - and you don't have to deal

[lace] Christening dress - long

2004-07-07 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello everyone,

Just last weekend I had in my possession a modern heirloom. In 1982 the
students of one of Dorothy Brown's lace classes made a Christening set,
comprising dress, petticoat, bonnet, booties and shawl. There were a dozen
or so of us lacemakers. My contribution was the lace (Bucks) for the neck
of the dress and a small piece of Torchon which went on the bodice of the
petticoat. The whole set was entered in the English Lace School's
competition that year and won the John Bull Trophy. (When the English Lace
School ceased the Lace Guild took over the John Bull competition.)

The dress was made from cream silk and the lace, all Bucks from the Luton
Museum pattern book, I think, from Piper's Silk Floss. The pattern for the
dress came from Dorothy's own Christening robe so is traditional in style.
There are long edging from neck to hem, the skirt has a central panel with
horizontal strips about two and a half inches wide, and the lower edge has
the same lace.

The bonnet back has a small circular piece with a crown picked out with
gimp. The shawl was knitted by one of the lace makers from wool spun by
Anne Parker (Tim's wife) To complete everything there is an accompanying
photo album containing the history of the dress from its inception to the
present day and photos of all the babies who have been christened in it.

At present the Christening set is with my niece. Her third baby, Daniella,
is to be christened on the 18th of this month. We tried it on her last
Saturday. She looked a picture and my niece is absolutely delighted with
the loan. The only one that she liked was in Marks and Spencer's and cost
about £90 for the dress alone. When we originally made the robe, we intended
that it should be used for Poole Bobbin lace Circle members to use for their
babies. However as the years pass by we are becoming grandparents, great
aunts etc so now any Poole lacemaker can borrow the set. (How about it Pam?
- for the next one?)

As to washing, it gets hand washed in Stergene and dripped dry before wear,
lightly ironed and washed again afterwards before storing in acid free
tissue paper until the next time. Even sicky, dribbly babies haven't
managed to spoil it!
