Re[2]: [lace] domain name change
Liz We are very grateful to you for continuing to maintain this lacelist. Many of us have been on it for a long time and appreciate it even though we don't use it as much as we used to. I think it would be fine to no longer have lace-chat. It was created when we were a very busy list and was a place where non-lace topics could be chatted about with our lace friends. Is there an archive for lace-chat, or only lace? If there is one, is there anyway it's archive could be kept? Re[2]: [lace] Help With Skeined Cotton Thread
I looked in the archives for "slip" and came up with these messages from Brenda Paternoster: [lace] Slip threads Brenda Paternoster Sat, 31 Mar 2007 15:18:22 -0800 Dear Spiders I have recently acquired some old slip threads - thank you Lynne - and my quandry is whether or not I should break the packaging in order to measure the threads. Slip thread, is gassed cotton in skeins as traditionally used by lacemakers in England. According to Thomas Wright, 'Romance of the Lace Pillow' the thread came in 2 ounce packets; each packet containing 4 parcels and each parcel divided into several slips - (hence the name slip-thread). The slips are separated from each other by a red thread twisted between each slip. I *think* that the slips are joined together, ie one long length of thread. What I have is two packets plus one parcel of 12-slip, two packets plus one parcel of 10 slip and one parcel of 6-slip, plus a couple of individual slips that I don't know the size of - once a parcel has been opened and the red thread cut the "size" information is destroyed!! When I weighed the four parcels they only weighed 4 ounces - I think that could be an error by Thomas Wright (I know his book is not now considered 100% accurate), and I think the thread was manufactured by E Peat, Son & Co of Nottingham as there's a blue paper wrapper bearing their label in the bag that the threads came in. Wolter-Kampmann's book (German edition page 26) shows a parcel, a packet, a wrapped packet and a larger wrapped packet (2 ounce) of this thread. My question is; should I break the wrapping threads to measure the thread or should I keep it intact? Brenda in Allhallows, Kent http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/index.html Re: [lace] thread on eBay Brenda Paternoster Thu, 27 Apr 2006 16:17:57 -0700 Hello Clay Today some thread sold on eBay, and it raised a couple of questions that I thought you might be able to answer. The thread was described as "12 slip 230 , so very, very fine". The first question is, what does this term (12 slip 230)mean? Is it related to the old "band" descriptor, as in "12 band"? I've not heard the expression 12 band before - is that an American term? Probably does mean the same as slip. 12 slip means that there are (were originally) 12 little skeins joined together as a continuous length in one 'parcel'. Each 'slip' is separated from the others by a coloured thread inserted between the slips in a multiple figure of eight. The more slips in the parcel the finer the thread - I think 14 or 15 was the finest and about 3 or 4 the "thickest". To quote from Miss Channer's little book (revised 1972) "For point ground a fine cotton thread was used. The most usual size was known as 10 slip. The skein was divided up by red cotton into the number denoting the size, eg 6 slip was divided into 6 groups, 10 slip into 10 and so on. A 200 linen thread would be the equivalent to a 10 slip cotton but unfortunately neither is being manufactured at the present time. DMC thread No 80, although highly mercerised, seems to be a good substitute." The 12 slip would be finer than that. I *think* 230 means cotton count 230 - so very much finer than anything currently available (and horribly fine to try and do a wrapping!!). The second question is that there were what appeared to be four hanks of thread in the lot, and each hank was in a small sealed plastic bag, where it had been placed by the Honiton Lace Show "many years ago", since that is when the seller says she bought them. So the question is, do you think that the plastic was harmful to the thread over time, especially considering how fine it is said to be? I was at a lace day on Saturday; Tim Parker was speaking about threads and he recommended storing lace threads in polythene bags. Certainly light, acid and atmospheric pollution will cause more damage than polythene, but I'm not expert on that. Jeri, do you have any comments about storage in plastic? They offered us a 2 year price of $133, saving $11 over the 2 years, so I decided to go for it. 18 people kindly contributed to the cost, including: Barbara Morrow Beth McCasland Brian Lemin Carol Melton Carolyn M. Wetzel Deborah Johnson Doris O'Neill (who asked me to tell you all that she is still here and loving Arachne at 92!) Jean Reardon Joepie Hammett Karen in Malta Leonard Bazar Lin Hudren (who wanted you all to know that she has survived last year's chemo) Lorri Ferguson Rosemary Horr Ruth Lyon Susan Lambiris (and a couple of anonymous donors if you were counting! [lace] European Project "BOBBINLACEE"
I don't know if this message didn't arrive in your Arachne inbox. For some reason I didn't see it, until it was forwarded to me by another lacemaker. I see from the archives that there are only two responses to it - and it deserves to be seen. So I am copying it in again in case other people also missed it. There is a lot of information on the website, and I would really recommend visiting it. Thank you for all your hard work, Antje. Hello dear Arachne colleagues! Finally I can share with you the work that we have been doing during a three year long European project. I have been so busy, that I can't remember if I ever told you about it! Sorry if I didn't! As a resume: 6 European countries have participated in this very demanding project: Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Czech Republic and Spain. I belong to the Spanish staff team. Each country needed to create a group of 5 teachers and 35 learners to be able to teach them in their own country the type of lace they decided to choose. Each country also had to learn and to teach their learners the laces from the other 5 countries. Each country had to prepare a teaching workbook, which is now available for anybody who is interested. Do not hesitate in having a look at the material the 6 countries have prepared (you can find it in our webpage: https://bobbinlacee.eu/ under "Learning material". It is also downloadable, if you are interested) and read the resumes of every transnational meeting. The project also included travelling to the partner countries to learn their methods, but unfortunately, we could only enjoy of half of the programmed trips. The rest had to be taught online to a very numerous group (around 60 people)., which was a great challenge, as there was no previous experience in this type of teaching. Language barriers were also enormous, as most lacemakers of the participating countries did not speak English, which was our common communicating language. In the end, I have experienced two things: 1. that working in groups is difficult, as everybody has their own way of thinking, sometimes very opposed. 2. that working in groups gives us a wealth of knowledge not just about bobbin lace and its techniques, but also from the human point of view. So, please enjoy surfing our webpage, which will only be available until the end of the summer 2022. I thought you'd all like to know that we have had 10 people volunteer so far to help pay this year's subscription, one of who is willing to underwrite any balance not met by other people. So clearly people still want to keep our Arachne flickr account open. Many thanks to those 10 ladies! As I said a few days ago, we don't have to pay this till April. Nearer the time I will be accepting donations via PayPal (for preference), and will remind each of you how much you have pledged. I will continue to collect names of people willing to help fund our Flickr account for another year by donating a small sum eg $3 or $6 to pay the bill in April. [lace] Flickr photos for Arachne
Hi All One of our members reminded me this weekend, that it is time to consider our Flickr Subscription. In 2020, a group of Arachneans helped pay for a 2 year subscription, which expires mid-April 2022. The two year plan is no longer available. The cost to us in April will be $72 for one year. Arachne barely has any conversations these days, so I am no longer sure whether we still wish to host photos on the internet. I thought I'd raise this topic now so that we have time to discuss keeping our Flickr Pro account. If we decide not to keep it we will still have enough time for people to download any photos they want mid-April. So over to all of you: firstly do we still want to keep this Flickr Pro account and secondly, if we do, are there 12 people each willing to pay $6 to share the costs of the account? Or 24 people to pay $3 each? Please do not send me any money until we have corporately decided on whether we want to keep the account Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re[3]: [lace] Project Lace Dress
Here's the text from the pdf, to whet your appetites for participating! You'll need to follow the link https://www.facebook.com/groups/30338026304/files to see the sketch of the dress and get the registration form. Jean, could you also upload the pattern page? Project LACE DRESS - Kirsten Brinckmann kirsten.project.l...@gmail.com With great interest I have followed the âRed Dressâ project, conceived by British artist Kirstie Macleod, which provides an artistic platform for women around the world, to tell their personal stories through embroidery. âTHE RED DRESSâ During 11 years, from 2009 to 2020, the Red Dress travelled around the globe being embroidered by more than 200 women and 2 men from 28 countries! Some of the women were established master embroiderers, others first-time embroiderers. They were encouraged to tell a personal story that they would like to share through embroidery, expressing their own identities, adding their own cultural and traditional experience. Some chose to create using a specific style of embroidery practiced for hundreds of years in their family, village, or town. Initially the project sought to generate a dialogue of identity through embroidery, merging diverse cultures, with no borders. The Red Dressâs 11-year journey around the world through embroidery is now complete, with the dress assembled in its final configuration. Covered in millions of stitches, the 6.2 kg silk dress is weighted as much by the individual stories and collective voices waiting to be heard as by the threads and beads that adorn it. It has been exhibited in various galleries and museums worldwide. In future, the artisans will be invited to take part in exhibiting the Red Dress in their own countries alongside their own work. You will find detailed information: www.reddressembroidery.com Instagram: #reddressembroideryproject Facebook: @thereddressembroidery I am sure you will be fascinated too! I was incredibly impressed and thought: Look what we can achieve, when we put our talents and skills together! How interesting it is to get to know the many personal stories of all the embroiderers. Inspired by this extraordinary project, I came up with the idea of initiating a similar project centred around a Lace Dress. How wonderful would it be if lacemakers from all over the world work together to decorate one dress with lace? So, Iâm pleased to invite all lacemakers in the world to participate in this project! The finished dress is to be exhibited and admired at the 20th OIDFA World Lace Congress in Hamburg from 4 - 6 August 2023! It won't be long until thenâ¦. I have drawn a sketch of the Lace Dress, look at the cover - this is what it could look like. The more lacemakers who participate, the more opulent the design of the dress will be, therefore please tell your lace friends about it too and bring this project out into the lace world. Let me describe the possibilities the project offers you. Choose any lace technique you like, or a combination of two ore more, create your own design or choose a traditional pattern (note the designer's specifications!) and adapt it to the given formats and dimensions. The pieces of lace can be executed in two or three dimensions. I have put together several geometric shapes - square, rectangle and triangles in different sizes. Please download the PDF pattern sheet, select one or more geometric patterns, and make sure to check the given dimensions! You can use any textile material (e.g. silk, cotton, linen) in various thicknesses, but please only in white or off-white color! It would be nice if you would document the planning of the pattern and the execution process, with photos if you like. If you would also like to share your personal story through lacemaking with us, ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers: 1. What encouraged you to start making lace? 2. What fascinates you so much that you spend time, energy and money on it? 3. What inspires you, where do you get your ideas from? 4. Do you specialise in something? 5. What place does making lace have in your everyday life? 6. What has making lace changed in your life, what is its importance? Finally, all your laces will then be arranged and appliquéd by hand, the design for the dress - which is dependent on the number of pieces of lace I receive - will be created in collaboration with costume designers and then made from silk fabric in my studio in Hamburg. After the congress, the dress will travel and exhibited, together with all the stories it tells. Later the dress is to be auctioned off for social charity or donated to a museum. I am very much looking forward to meeting many new lacemakers through this project! Kirsten Brinckmann Conditions of participation The project Lace Dress is open to all lacemakers of the world! To participate in this project, please send the completed and signed registration form to me by 30. September 2022 at the latest.
Re[2]: [lace] Project Lace Dress
This looks like a very manageable project to participate in. The threads to be used have to be white or cream, and the biggest piece of lace required is 2 x 4 inches (5 x 10cm); the smallest 1 x 2 inches. There are 2 rectangles, 3 triangles and 1 square and all fit in less than an A4 or letter sized piece of paper. Deadline to register isn't until September 2022. Hi, No I didn't use Lia's pattern as I made the seahorse ~2010 and took it to Cannes OIDFA Congress in 2012. I modified the Bedfordshire pattern by Japanese lacemaker Keiko Takekawa. I wanted a fanned dorsal fin. The pattern is on page 39 in LACE #101 (January 2001). And LACE #99 has 2 bookmarks with seahorse motifs (pages 30-31). There are other seashore motifs in that issue, including a seahorse and shell within a shell pattern on page 35. It's interesting when you look at images of seahorses some have different kinds of dorsal fins & some have none. And I do know that it is the male that carries the eggs until they hatch. I had considered the digest people and decided I had no idea how long it would be before a digest came out and just needed to get these things out of my house while I had some time to deal with them. So I was sorry not to have contacted everyone on the list with my 5 day offer but I really didn't want to have emails coming in about the subject for a month Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com -- Original Message -- From: "Janice Blair" To: "lace" Sent: 9/29/2020 11:27:07 AM Subject: [lace] : Free Battenburg patterns & calendar Hi Sue,Just wanted to point out that I receive the digest version of Arachne and as emails are less frequent these days it takes a long time for a digest to come and even then it only contains about 6 emails. Anyway, your offer was seen today, September 29, by me and probably many others who get the digest. If anyone offers a raffle in the future maybe you can set a date about a month out so everyone has a chance. I am getting my lace fix these days in Zoom meetings of guilds I belong to and working on new designs which will hopefully be in the Bulletin and Lace in the next year. I have my Christmas lace already done, including my Arachne exchange. I think this Covid thing will be around for a long time which is a bummer. Re: Re[3]: [lace] Lace identification
Thank you to everyone who has had any input in this discussion. It is interesting to read all the different thoughts and view. It has given both myself and my sister much more idea of what she has owned for 32 years and it has been moved from a keepsake box into her knickers draw so she can enjoy looking at it every day. Whilst writing this I have just thought of something she might do in the coming weeks, when she can stop shielding and go back out into the world. The Wardown Museum in Luton is not very far from her home so she can over and visit it and perhaps one of the ladies might be able to show her something like it. Many thanks to all wherever you are in the world, it is a special thing we have on here to help share the beauty of lace of so many kinds. Sue T I agree with Maria. As I said initially, this is machine-made needlerun on machine-made net. This indeed a form of embroidery on net, which is not usually included in what people mean by "needle-lace". I didn't want to get into an argument about how narrowly or how broadly one defined "needle-lace", since embroidered forms of lace are indeed made by a needle. I'll attach my initial analysis since I never saw that appear on Arachne and maybe was lost in cyberspace. Re: [lace] Re Lace identification
Incredible, thank you Jane. Sue Turnbull I agree with needlerun, but also the thought that went through my mind was Limerick?, though I'm wondering about Nottingham (Leavers) as some of the net sides have been stitched into (splitting the twists) rather than the careful darning which would be done by hand. At that point, my Nottingham-born husband walked in, took one look and flippantly said, "that looks Irish to me"! His knowledge of lace goes as far as being the grandson of a lace runner (mending the nets and darning ends in as they came off the machine is what I was told that meant; Phil's maternal grandmother was a lovely lady who died in 1982, the year after we got married) and, as a descendant of Bedfordshire lacemakers on his father's side , being able to do cloth stitch, so take that remark as lightly as it was made! She bought it in the Kings Road, London, England UK. It appeared from its storage in recent times while shielding from the covid 19. She took a couple of photos were sent to me because she knew I would like to see them. I dont think I did the day of her wedding but my knowledge and joining the lace world only began in 2001 and then increased when I joined Arachne in 2005. I thought that all you many experienced lacemakers who also have great knowledge of lace, techniques, origins and all of that would enjoy to look and we might all learn a little about it, especially as many of us have been stuck at home for months. My sister was stunned when she got some fab feedback quickly from a couple of ladies here in the UK and when I read all the comments basically saying they needed to see the back I asked her to take a photo of the back. So far we are all agreed that it is needlelace and a very pretty well made piece which has survived the years well. We really appreciate all the feedback and are both grateful for it. Re: [lace] An historical reference to a "Bobbin Maker in Devon also a "trolly bobbin"
I read this email today and immediately remembered that I have 2 Devon Trolly Lace books written by Carol McFadzean. Carol is a lace maker who lives in a place called Woodbury in Devon. She was handed a bag of samples of this lace that had been found in the attic of a local school in the mid to late 1970s. After much researching and reworking of some of the lace patterns worked in the 1800s she produced several books about it. There are a few photos of trolly lace bobbins with masses of decoration on them. There was some information and reference of Queen Victoria putting lace work for the villagers to help them earn money to keep their families safe in difficult times.Maybe she has some information she might share with you. I have two books alongside me which I flicked through but my brain is thinking I might have a third. Certainly these two have pictures of the original samples found and bobbins, reference to certain people who did work on the Royal Christening Gown. This still exists as has been documented on here before but a new one has been worked which has been used for the latest royal babies. Good luck Sue Dorset UK 2:57 AM To: lace@arachne.com Subject: [lace] An historical reference to a "Bobbin Maker in Devon also a "trolly bobbin" I have had a great morning going through all my collected quotes for historical sources with an idea to collate then into interesting quotes to the East Devon and Downton bobbin project. Re: [lace] Happy 25th Anniversary
I was born in Luton and lived lived there for my first 28 years but didn't begin to learn to make lace until 2001. Reading books and Arachne, learning about the Lace Dealers Pattern Book for the first time we visited the museum in about 2003 and then a couple of other times. We took my Mum with us one time but she was more interested in the straw hats which she knew much more about. Luton is also famous for making straw boater hats. I have learned a great deal through Arachne, like many of us I expect Sue T OMG!!! I just found 2 things that I “physically” acquired through this list! They have been “lost” since 2003! I found them on our 25th anniversary! 1. The pricking of Miss Channer’s Mat that I won in a raffle Jacqui held through Arachne! I never ever win raffles and won that one!!! I Sooo want to tackle it but still need more bobbins! 2. The Lace Dealer’s Pattern Book from the Luton Museum! Everyone in Arachne worked so hard to preserve the samples from Thomas Lester’s Lace Pattern Book, and to get the facsimile book produced so we could turn to it without having to go to the Luton Museum! Seemed like it took forever then suddenly it was offered to us. They mention Arachne in the book and mention how we brought worldwide interest to the conservation work. As a group we should recognise how deeply we have impacted the world of lace. It has been a very good and productive 25 years. Re: [lace] Happy 25th Anniversary
For now just celebrating being alive and having the mobile phone contacts with family and computer contact with friends and family around the world. I joined 10 years after the beginning, so a relative newbie, I have had some excellent help from Arachnids around the world, so thank you to one and all. My last piece of lace was complete in time for Christmas and I have been relearning the skills and patience needed working on an embroidery table cloth. Initially because I wanted to have another go after 40 ish years. My DH asked who it was for (because my work is normally a gift for someone), I told him, no one and I may never complete it but I am now 3/4 of the way round with the last bit to do working a little every evening. I have also been playing nicely trying out quilt making or patchwork. I always loved the American quilts made by so many clever women in very hard times and never thought I had the patience but that is something lacemaking teaches I feel. I have made 3 blocks, completing each one as a single tablemat, a pair for local friends which they and their cats love, and a single one which is waiting to be posted to my younger brother. I had started working a piece of bobbin lace dragonfly, before I worked 3 strips for gifts at Christmas, so now it needs to be picked up again and worked to completion so I can sew on one of my tops to wear. Looking forward to seeing that finished. For 12 years I worked only bobbin lace, then I learned to make needle tatting (tatting being something I had wanted to see made and learn to work) and with the aid of good friends and you tube videos. So we are able to bring old crafts back into use, or learn from scratch, which is a huge help in the current situation as we have been confined to our home for the next 12 weeks. So I wish you all joy of your crafts, hope you are well and onward into the next 25 years. Sue T in sunny Dorset UK, after a very wet autumn, winter and spring. Re: [lace] History of Lace. Spoiler: this could be boring!
There is much talk in books of the privateers raiding ships of Spain and taking cloth, lace and jewels from them to Elizabeth 1 in England who was daughter to Henry V111. Earlier than that Merchants who travelled between countries with spices and whatever so why not lace fabric and other. I believe gold lace has been found on Egyptian Mummies from the pyramids, so think back to times and places. Sue T Dorset UK -Original Message- From: Jane Partridge Having been at the Lace Guild Convention when Dr Yallop gave a talk on the history and subsequently bought and read the book, I agree that his theory, which relates to the history of the Honiton lace industry, makes more sense than the much copied theories in Mrs Palliser's book that lacemaking was first introduced by migrants. This migrant theory also exists where the British nail making industry is concerned, (the Romans taught us that!) and no doubt also to many other industries. 1590 is very late when you consider that lace was worn in this country in 1537, if not earlier. It is reported that Anne of Cleeves had lace in her wedding trousseau, and we have the stories of Catherine of Aragon teaching her ladies to make lace... albeit hearsay, the chances are that the Spanish industry goes back further as I believe I have read somewhere that lace (maybe needlace rather than bobbin) was in existence around 1480, I think it was 1485 she married Henry? JR Planche, writing (from primary source research) in 1837 includes details of broad bands of gold lace on Henry VIII's clothing, I can't remember the years but this would have to be before 1547. I think the earliest of the Huguenots are said to have arrived in the 1570s. Of course, lace throughout history has been led by fashion, and that what was in fashion on the Continent would be brought here by merchants. Kings travelled abroad to lead their troups in battle, Henry VIII included, and would not want to be behind the times in what they wore, either. So a fashion for lace adorned clothing would easily spread from the continent to England where the nobility were concerned. We know that Milan was the centre of fashionable clothing then, just as Paris is known now. Much would have been imported, but I doubt the well to do would want to spend money unnecessarily so our weavers could well have been set the task of copying some of the lace, possibly aided by some of Catherine's ladies (or their servants) which developed into our own industry, prior to the refugees arriving who likely joined with those similarly employed (for ease of work and sales) where ideas and patterns may have been shared. That's what I think, but none of us were there at the time so we will never really know! Jane Partridge Brian wrote: There is little doubt in my mind that the settlers must have made a real contribution to English lace making wherever they settled, and so too did the English businessmen make it a combined and profitable English business. As to the origin of lace in that 1590s ( plus or minus), I leave that point to be argued by others who know better than me. Re: [lace] 1851 Great Exhibition catalogue
Precious materials were used to make all sorts of items to trade, other than ornaments. Snuff boxes often had ivory inlay cigar boxes, etc I expect. As mentioned handles for parasols or fans, I also wonder what decorations have adorned castles/palaces around the world, Spain, France, Russia, Britain as well as others in Eastern Europe which have been used by top folk in all of those countries along with all the silver and gold items in these places and during the last 150 years others have come and gone. Sue T I remember Barbara Underwood saying that Thomas Lester used family and friends for his complicated patterns as they would not be cost effective for the average lacemaker. Maybe they used ivory bobbins. I always thought it would be impossible for antique bobbins to be ivory but maybe there are some about. I do have one ivory Bobbin which was made by Richard Gravestock, possibly early to mid 1980s just before it became illegal to sell ivory. And I have an Antique ivory parasol but I have no idea how old it is. Even if it was legal I wouldn’t buy ivory now. Re: [lace] How much did lace makers pay for high end bobbins. Reply
We hear of Nuns or the lady of the manor teaching children to make lace way back. most that I have heard from (partly during family history research are often daughters of agricultural workers, wives or agricultural workers or similar). Lots of novels I read mention a nurse who tats, miles of tatting waiting for someone to marry and then use it on their bedding or whatever:)I have heard mention of tambour work, and embroidery by ladies of leisure, white work done by the young wives of a family. We see paintings with the lady holding a fairly large tatting shuttle but I have never seen a large portrait with bobbin lace pillow included. As you say it is usually the lower classes. There are of course, small pictures of ladies making bobbin lace. Sue T Dorset UK As usual, I am indebted to Arachne members for their response to my question. 1. Most agreed with my proposed new motto about how much we DO NOT know. All agreed. 2. It was suggested that our study of bobbins (basically relating from Springett's book) is dealing with the high end of lace making. 3. This what the Arachne member said to me : Yes, I would love to know how low paid workers got their mitts on ivory mother and babes. I am suspecting that the "middle class" possibly made lace. Possibly they made it for their own use or possibly as a pass-time. Being in a class with more coin to spend, their pillows would be decorated with better quality bobbins. I would figure that [the better off] would be the ones that would be buying ivory bobbins. Maybe servants were occasionally gifted a pair that was old or slightly damaged, as a reward for service above and beyond? Re: [lace] lace trim on clothing
I have had several lovely ideas so thank you very much ladies and having looked at the various ones I have gone back to one I made some years ago, which is the one by Claire Burkhard and used as part of a dream catcher inside our living history tent awning and in our home for some time. It is too big to reuse on my top, but the lines are pleasing so I have dug out the pattern again, reduced it in size but have decided to add or extend a couple of areas to get the look I want. Now need to decide on colours:-) I have some ideas. Sue T Hello Sue and all, There is a dragonfly in the book, 50 New Bobbin Lace Patterns by Claire Burkhard, page 64. [lace] lace trim on clothing
I have spent part of today sewing a Milanese Hummingbird (Louise Colgan pattern) onto the high shoulder of a new top. I didnât actually make this one although I did make it, mine was given to my Mother). This one was a gift to me via the Arachne exchange a number of years ago. I had this lace sewn on to another item of clothing for years which was rarely used, but enjoyed when I did, so now have it on a normal clothing item which can be worn by me any time and it looks good. But now that is done I have the desire to make a similar size lace Dragonfly and sew that on to another top. I have made one or two other items before to achieve this but not the right choices so still sitting in a box somewhere which is sad. [lace] Raffle
I was lucky enough to find at a car boot a very old sewing case which also contained several packets of large darning needles, each packets holds 25 needles so plenty to share. Considering how old they were the needles are perfect and very useful for sewing knitting etc as they have large eyes. I will never use them all so am raffling a packet off please send me your name and address if you are interested in having them. I will draw the raffle on Tues 24th Sept. Hi Alice Norfolk Lacemakers have a very large library but we cannot store them where we meet but are lucky enough to have two very good librarians who supply a list of all our books. If we want a book we simply ring or email them and they bring it to the next meeting. [lace] Re: Love your bauble!
Well we all now know that once these images are out on the internet we cant retrieve them but I am so pleased that it also inspired you as her work and help inspired me. Normally my brain and my life and lace is worked symmetrical but this is almost the only time it saw this different angle, so I am pleased with it and I might just bring the pattern out again and make it up for my two very special sisters, so this piece keeps giving and giving. I must choose a different colour and make a small change I think. To be honest I have struggled around Christmas for the last three years for various reasons so havenât taken part in the exchanges and dont actually remember if I saw this before or not. Grief and age taking their toll a little so I am pleased I have now looked and been reinspired, but I hope that if you use this again you will give me credit for the original design. Sue T Dorset UK Dear Sue, I do hope that you claimed credit when you saw it back in 2017 the first time, because I definitely believe in giving credit where credit is due. I am pretty sure, in fact, that I did learn it was your design and that I wrote to you then. In any event, I love the design and have made some other variations on it since. At my library we have a photocopier that allows us not only to enlarge or shrink, but even to manipulate the x-axis and the y-axis separately, so I have made a few of the same in "long and skinny" (110% taller than original but only 90% wide) and am planning on making some short and stout (110% wider than original and 90% of original height)! One of the biggest drawbacks of Pinterest is that you usually can never find the source :-( Happy lacing, Sally Jenkins Arachne 2017 Christmas Card exchange, made by Sally Jenkins in the USA for Sue Duckles in the UK, taken from Pinterest is a design created by me in approx 2009 when I first began using some of the lace software. Thank you to you Trish and to Liz Pass in Poole who came back to me yesterday. I am keeping the information to see if the lace makes it out of the apartment in the first place. It might not have survived the fire or the ruthless hosing down and at this point I have no idea but it seemed a good time to ask the question in case! Sue T Still sunny in Dorset UK, Hi Sue, If the lace is still intact and just smoke damaged it is worth a try to restore it by soaking and washing it to remove the smoke. [lace] Is there any change to recover this lace
My brother and his wife were taken into hospital recently due to smoke inhalation after an explosion in their flat which caused some fire damage and obviously smoke damage. In the first few days our concerns were for them but once the initial shock he asked me if it was possible to replace a gift I gave them a couple of years ago, which I have been able to do easily, but today I remembered that previously to this I worked a lace photo frame for their sitting room which is the area where the fire took place (although I dont think that has dawned on them yet). The flat is not currently habitable right now which gives you an idea of the extent of the damage. Can I ask if it is possible to recover white lace to a reasonable state if it has survived the main fire area or should I just consider remaking it, as I created the design on my lace program at the time I still have the pattern in my files ? I know some of you more experienced ladies have masses of knowledge about this kind of situation which I hope you will point me toward please. I felt that most of these bobbins were hand made and often a bit rough and ready so not necessarily a style but maybe as a result of inexperience and not made by a skilled craftsman perhaps. Re: [lace] What is the best way to start bobbin lace?
I started to learn lace when my son was 10 months old - so it is possible to combine with a young child. However I hope she has a less absent-minded partner than my husband. He was supposed to be looking after my son while I cooked. Instead I heard an interesting pinging sound coming from the dining room, where it turned out that my son had discovered that if you pulled each bobbin carefully the thread would snap. He managed to break about 17 threads before I found out - on the corner of a piece of Bucks lace. I ordered them both out of the house before I did something I'd regret to the older one of them!! [lace] Flickr account - decision made!
I am tremendously grateful to Clay Blackwell for all the years she has hosted this Flickr unlimited storage account. She has done so as a way of giving back to the lace world. Thank you so much for doing this, Clay. This morning I investigated having several free Flickr accounts. It would mean, downloading all the photos from our existing account uploading them to free Flickr accounts and typing in all the info all over again. I remember how much work it was when we last moved storage platforms of the photos and I went through that process. I have NO desire to do it ever again, especially as we have a lot more stored photos than we had in 2012! Quarterly charges used to be $6.95 every 3 months, but changed to $17.95 every 3 months in October 2018, which is what triggered Clayâs request to me earlier this week. So having spoken with Clay on the phone, I have now taken over this Flickr Pro account and decided to go with the annual charge of $49.99, which I will pay this year. It is due in April. I may ask for donations to help fund it in April 2020. It allows us to store unlimited photos. This way we can keep storing photos in the same place and keep all the information that has been written about them. Our Flickr account https://www.flickr.com/photos/lacemaker/ is always listed at the bottom of each Arachne email. [lace] Flickr account for photos
Hi All We need to put our collective thinking caps on. For many years now, Clay Blackwell has been funding our Arachne Flickr site personally â apparently since 2012. We have more photos (2674) stored there than can be stored on a free Flickr account (1000). There have been changes to the Flickr account recently and the costs are now $17.95 a quarter. Clay no longer wishes to be responsible for hosting this account. I have been assisting her by maintaining the photos in albums and helping Arachneans post those photos. We need to find a solution for the future for our Flickr account, which will involve getting the account out of Clayâs name into someone elseâs if we are to continue to use it. I have not investigated how this might be done â or, if indeed it is possible to do so. Suggestions as far as I see them are: 1) find someone else willing to host our Flickr account! 2) ask for donations to fund our Flickr account â (Maybe via PayPal donations once a year. 72 x $1 donations would be sufficient at present) 3) find a different platform to store the photos (I have no knowledge on other platforms) 4) suggest people remove their own photos and close down the storage online 5) remove all stored photos and simply go with the reduced storage that the free Flickr account allows. This would allow us to see photos as we wanted to discuss them 6) have multiple free Flickr accounts - starting up a new one as we near the limit of 1000 Please donât just reply to me personally on this, but let the whole list know what you think? Do you want the availability of a photo storage site? Do we need to keep all the photos? Can we archive ones in earlier years? All suggestions welcome â but remember to trim your posts!! Articles about Ireland, Italy, France, The Netherlands. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/05/fashion/lace-carrickmacross-ireland.html You may enjoy the loving way Carrickmacross is presented in the article at the address above. We know that technically, this is embroidery and applique applied by hand to a pre-existing foundation fabric (usually net). However, it and Limerick lace (hand embroidery) were marketed as lace in the 19th C. and they have been called lace ever since. There is something for almost everyone in this special "Craftsmanship" section, as you will notice at the bottom, where you can select from 3 additional options: 1 - In Florence, an 'Undiscovered Jewel' of a Fabric Mill. (Silk, Pucci, female weavers, Leonardo da Vinci's inventions. Did you know hand looms used today were once owned by noble families in Florence and date from the 1700's? Silk has been made in Florence since the 1300's. Going to Italy in 2019? Da Vinci died in 1519, and Florence is beginning to celebrate the 500th anniversary of his death. This silk mill is attracting the attention of Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, and Bill Gates.) Art book Jeri recommends: Merchants, Princes and Painters - Silk Fabrics in Italian and Northern Paintings 1300-1550, by Lisa Monnas, Yale Press. 2. Who's Got the Button? Chanel. French. (Google to view Chanel at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where you will see what appears to be a lace runner appliqued to the front of a dress!) Jeri's fashion tip: Upgrade a garment and give it new life by changing buttons. Inexpensive clothing can be treated to fabulous buttons from a specialty shop. When you travel to a large city, search for button shops. Nice buttons are better to own than tawdry souvenirs, and can be saved when garments are discarded. Buttons are collectible, have potentially long lives, can be used when creating textile art, and some can serve as spangles for lace bobbins.) 3. A Dutch Laboratory that Paints in Yarn. (This is very interesting, and about TextielLab, where research and development is the focus - for making large tapestries and textile installations. You will think in new ways about the potential when paint is applied to lace. They tried to make red pop by adding a little fluorescent, but then the textile became stiff. So, here you learn how professionals tackle problems as they "invent". There is a museum to visit at this location.) Re: [lace] Lace Digest
Not doing much on the internet at the moment, I managed to complete all my Christmas lace pieces, then found I had missed 4 so got back into that and then sat trying out another piece but with beads in . I learned what I had done wrong with that one, putting all the beads on the tatting ball thread rather than most of them and some added with a crochet hook, so will try that one again later. I layed this piece of white tatting with gold beads down on a red tablecloth which showed contrast nicely and I husband liked it, asked who it was for and when I said nobody just a trial thing he said how nice it would look on clothing. So I just laid it up on the shoulder of my top and he loved it. He then laughed saying how well I had trained him over the years, lol.I bought some metallic crochet cotton to try out something to attach to our led church candles. The thread is difficult to work with so I have abandoned that for now. I am now taking a break from tatting and back to my bobbin lace pieces, completing a garter wanted for summer next year but I do hate leaving things to the last minute. I am pleased with this and now I can get back to making some more leaves to go with pink petals for a brooch pin which is a gift to a local friend. Yesterday I got stuck looking through old photos hunting for one for my sister and scanning lots of them for some projects I have decided on for during next year. I will probably start playing with them over the Christmas holiday period and winter weather time, those days when you cant or dont want to go outside. Fun to put together photos from down to years to music that fits the the person and their lives. I still have a copy of one we did for my parents. For you Janice, February is not so far away and you will have plenty of work to get you lace made before that. Sue T in Dorset where we have winter for 3 days and then warming up a bit for a few days as well. The last Lace Digest I received was dated November 7. Is the list just quiet because of the holiday here in the US, or are you all busy working on your lace.  I have just completed 12 stars in rings for my knitting group. Last year I made them my cat bookmark which they liked. I hope they like this ornament. It is an old design off my website that I have tidied up and put in silver rings. Re: [lace] Activities at Lace, not Lace
Wow! Devon you are having an amazing time. I was so impressed with the exhibit. You did an absolutely splendid job Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: Devon Thein Sent: Monday, November 5, 2018 10:24 AM To: lacelijst - Subject: [lace] Activities at Lace, not Lace It has been a busy week in Clinton, NJ. On Thursday, Greet Rome, Martin Bruggeman, Wally Thoma and Veerle Merschaut visited the exhibit at the Hunterdon Art Museum, having come from Belgium. In honor of this international visit, a town councilwoman was sent by the mayor to greet them, and a Hunterdon County Freeholder also came, welcomed them and took the tour with them. The Freeholder had to leave before the end of the tour, because the tour took about 2 hours. The duration of the tour varies with the interest level of those on the tour. After the tour we went across the historic bridge and had lunch at the Clinton House Inn, an historic inn which was established in 1743 and was once a stage coach stop. On Friday, we had a viewing at the Ratti of War Lace and other Belgian lace with the four Belgian ladies, and we were joined by Karen Thompson who journeyed up from Washington, DC, and Loretta Holzberger, President of the IOLI and Lee Daly who was graciously acting as Loretta's hostess for the visit. On Saturday, Loretta, Lee, Trenna Ruffner, who had come from Michigan to see the show, participated in a ticketed tour that was organized by the museum. There was one lady at the tour who had made bobbin lace in the 1970s and wanted to get back into it. I noticed that Lee was giving her all the details of how to connect with lace in NJ. There were about a dozen people on the tour. It seems like the more people there are, the shorter the tour is, so this tour was only an hour long. Although this may seem counter intuitive, it actually makes sense because when there is only one person or a few people they enter in more freely with their observations about the works on display. So far the record length of a tour is 2 hours and twenty minutes. After this tour, a small group of us walked across the historic bridge to the historic inn and had lunch. The inn had thus been subjected to two times this week when a group of 7 people who had not reserved in advance walked in demanding food. They seem to prefer to have reservations made, but as I learned at the time of the opening, they don't like reservations that are for a yet to be determined number of people at a yet to be determined time. On Sunday, we picked up Elena Kanagy-Loux at the Newark train station and drove her to Clinton for her to give a beginning bobbin lace class to 10 people. The class was completely subscribed. I stayed to assist. The students completed a sampler of cloth stitch, half stitch, whole stitch, and in some even did torchon ground. Everyone seemed to enjoy the class and several people wanted to know how to continue. I directed them to the IOLI website to have the regional director match them with the nearest lace opportunities. Several people seemed to be interested in returning this coming Sunday for "Drop In Lacemaking" with Pat Morris. After the class Elena and my husband and I crossed the historic bridge and walked into the historic inn without a reservation for dinner. I enjoyed reading both of these, different but lovely:) I am stunned that I completed all my Christmas pieces from a very later start for me and by the end of October. I am going to make a spare one, just in case I want to give a small gift to someone else in the near future and it can sit in my box. I have also decided to make another piece, this one with some beads on if I have enough to do it right now to while away my evenings over the next week. I am waiting for some gold thread my husband suggested something to go round our 2 led candles, so will see if I can pull something off in the next few weeks. My latest poppy is now ready to go on my clothing. Someone told me to put gold in the centre which I did but during the year I removed that one for my memorial flowers and have now replaced it with the conventional black centre and I have to say it looks absolutely right now. Janice, if I can get a decent photo of my memorial flowers I will send you a pic, many of the petals were done using your pattern (thank you so much for that). I now have them sitting in a glass vessel with a top on to keep the bugs at bay. I love it and can see it every day. Happy Birthday Beth. I do see Herons around the various water ways local, though not often we seem to be feeding approx 40 Goldfinches daily with the feeders we put up in March when we had some nasty weather. Started off seeing 5 so the word has got round, lol, they keep me entertained while I am washing dishes. Sue T Dorset UK Busy knitting lace...I've just finished one lace shawl which I'll wear to my birthday party on Saturday, and started another. I'm enjoying my copy of Lace, too, but don't think I've got time to make a lace poppy before Remembrance Day. My lace pillow only comes out for high days and holidays since I went back to work full time... Beth Janice wrote: It is 6 days since I received a digest.  Is everyone busy making lace? Re: [lace] re: Ebb 'n' Flow
Yes, I tried to get there from Liverpool on public transport, and it was not easily possible to get to Poole or Bournemouth - not by train or coach. So sadly I had to give up on the idea when I was in the UK in September Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Lace, Not Lace
If you havenât yet got to New Jersey to see the contemporary lace exhibit, which Devon has so carefully and successfully curated it is well worth the visit. The Urchins are going to be there till 10/10 (extended dates). However they do look as if they need a good wash â and, as I expected, the points of many of the motifs do not hold up. I remember pointing this out as I worked on several #2 motifs, but being told that they had a plan to keep them in shape. Well, by the looks of things the plan was never executed! Still they are dramatic from a distance. I have posted more photos on the flickr site. Sadly it was a grey day and the urchins would have looked better with blue skies! They were also setting up for a marathon to run through Clinton, so the Urchins had lots of red tents for company! Re: [lace] Securing knots in silk
I usually darn the ends in with silk, after the following knot: 1 right over left and under; right over left and under (ie two wraps here) 2 left over right and under then sometimes step 3 too: a further right over left and under Glue can show on silk, because it seems to be absorb even a drop of glue more quickly than cotton does, so more glue seems to wick into silk Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
