[LegacyUG] ***SPAM*** Re: ***SPAM*** Re: ***SPAM*** Re: ***SPAM*** RE: A question about FAG numbers

2024-02-03 Thread Gene Young

This has been an interesting thread.

Regarding the occasions where you may
find a duplicate FAG entries for the same person, be aware there
may very well be two legitimate entries for a single individual.
Consider the instance where a person may have died a long way from
home and the family could not afford to have the remains shipped
home. The person would have been buried where they died and the
family would install a marker in the family plot. This marker,
which looks exactly like a grave stone, is called a cenotaph. Some
times there will be a note in the FAG entry denoting this. Other
times you will have to use your genealogy detective skills to
determine the burial location and the cenotaph location. If you
are able to definitively establish which is which, notify the
maintainers of each of your findings so each can enter this
information and enter a reference to the other to assist others
  who encounter this pair.

I enter the burial location number in
the FAG field as the burial location and I enter the cenotaph
number as a comment in the comments field in the source detail.

I have created a master source for each
  cemetery with this format:
Cemetery - Find A Grave, Alex Cockram
  Cemetery, FAG ID2246704.
This helps in keeping things in order.

I also tag everyone in my database as
  follows:
Has a FAG # - Tag 7
has a burial location: - 6

no FAG - 5
When i find a FAG entry I clear 5 and
  6.

I don't expect that everyone will
follow this guide but I find it helps to make information easily
  available for research.

This post has been long enough so I
will save other comments for another time.
Good hunting,

Gene

As a side issue, I have found FAG memorials including photos, for individuals who died and were buried elsewhere – with no mention that the Memorial is not in the burial or death place. In fact, for 3 instances, the birth and death places in the FAG memorial text asserts that they actually died in that place (Australian state #1), when it was actually at another (Australian state #2) which is more than 300km distant.

Unless I have other proof that the person is actually buried where FAG says the Memorial is, I do not record the FAG entry as a Burial event, but simply as a "general" Event entitled "Memorial Inscription" which reads something like "Memorial Inscription: A Gravestone in XYZ Cemetery, Cemetery Address, bears the inscription 'Joe Bloggs, son of Jack, died 01 January 1801. Rest in Peace.'"

If I had proof that the FAG entry is incorrect I would message the person maintaining that entry. I don't think I've had to do that so far, but on several occasions I have provided additional information which has been accepted and recorded.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 Family View Screen

2023-11-01 Thread Gene Young

Linda,
Turning the computer of rather than re-start does nothing.  When you
turn it off it saves the current state of the computer, as is, including
any errors that exist in memory.  When you the start the computer again
it reloads everything, including errors.  When you do a restart it will
flush the memory and start fresh.  Remember, re-start clears and flushes
memory, turning off and on preserves the state of memory, saving and
re-loading all existing errors.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing

2023-09-18 Thread Gene Young
I believe this is what the OP is referring to.  I do not believe it can
be turned off.

-
When you are in Assigned Sources and a source is highlighted, if you
click on the copy source icon in the lower left of the page. You get a
warning;

Copy to Clipboard
The Source Clipboard currently contains a source. Do you want to
Overwrite it or Cancel?
Copy/Overwrite Existing   Cancel
-
If this is not what the OP is referring to disregard.

As a side note, it is helpful if, when requesting help, you specifically
reference the page or tab you are looking at.  This information will be
displayed at the top of the page or tab you are seeking help on. It will
save confusion and speed up your assistance.

Look at the Source Clipboard screen when it is open.
See the checkbox lower left corner.
It is also controlled from Options > Customise 7.4
If you watch any of the webinars from Geoff Rasmussen you'll see he

Re: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair problem

2023-09-04 Thread Gene Young
In Index view, in the box for RIN, enter the first RIN, 23361.  That
should highlight an individual. Double click on the individual and the
individual's Information box will open. On the bottom center of that box
click on the text "Find a Grave ID".  That will connect you to the Find
a Grave entry for that Find a Grave ID.  If the names and data match,
that one is the correct one.

To double check, repeat for the RIN 23365.

Delete the Find a Grave ID from the incorrect individual.

Cindy,
Here are the Support articles on your errors.

http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00271/11/Error-Messages-Problems/Error-508-Cannot-move-temporary-file-to-target-zip-file.html

It's a bit strange to get either of these if you are backing up to your computer hard drive as you indicate.
The default location for backups is ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\ folder but that's because it's a folder Legacy created so knows about. You should backup to an external drive or to a folder that syncs to the cloud - like a Dropbox folder or Google Drive or OneDrive.

To use the backup data zip, you don't unzip it yourself. You use File > Restore File in Legacy and it does the unzipping as part of the process.

Legacy allows you to print to an excell file.  In preparing to print each file,
do not select first and last name together rather select surname, then first
name, birth date and death date. Now you are ready to print the entire data
base to an excel file.  After it has printed, open the excel file and input the
name of the database in the first blank column. Repeat these steps for the
second database.  In the first empty column input the name of the second
database. Copy the entire page for the second database and paste the results at
the end of the first excel spreadsheet.  Do this for each remaining database.
Finally sort the file by the using the surname and then last name.  Now you
will be able to go down the alphabetical list which will tell you the database
for each person.  For excel help, see youtube.

Andrew,

I can not understand how two clicks is so onerous a chore, however, if you had done a
Google search for "Pin Website Shortcut to Taskbar in Windows 10"  you would
have your one click shortcut in the taskbar, available whenever you want it, even if you
are not running  Legacy at the moment.

What you want is not possible in Legacy.

To save you the "extra clicks" I am including the link to the directions on how
to accomlish the above in Edge, Chrome and Firefox.

If you only want to click once then you can only have an icon that will
open the website rather than set up the search.
Is it so hard to make two clicks instead of setting up the search yourself
in Ancestry???
The mechanism has been provided to do what you want to do and you're
bothered about the number of clicks to access it?
You can put the Search Internet onto your My Toolbar by customising your My
Toolbar by going to Design > Toolbars > My Toolbar.

If you are importing data to Legacy using the Legacy FamilySearch Share

given the option for an automatic Source to be added to your Legacy
file. If you are taking data from FamilySearch, then FamilySeach IS

If you mean that want to copy a Source which has been added to an

On the next window there are a number of check boxes to select to exclude items

Select the notes that you wish to exclude, Medical, Regular or Research or all

Fire Shot is a browser extension and of no use in Legacy.  If you must take
screen shots, Greenshot is free and will take a screen shot of anything in any
program.  I would, however, go with creating a report and sending that in a pdf
format.  Less hassle and easier to use.

Re: [LegacyUG] Version 9.0.0.265 Font Question

2018-12-04 Thread Gene Young

A possibility to check on:

*Note*: Color scheme settings in Legacy also include the current fonts when
they are saved. Thus, when a saved color scheme is loaded, the font settings
for Legacy will be changed to those saved with the color scheme. See Customize
- Colorsfor more information on color schemes.

I haven't checked this.

On 12/4/2018 6:42 AM, Chris Hill wrote:

I have been looking at that in the past. As far as I can tell there is no
obvious way to set a specific font size for the text in the Notes.

On Customise / 10 Fonts you do have some control over fonts, but are limited.

1. You can change the font to be used for Notes (3rd entry in Screen Fonts) but
not the font size, even though the selection includes the font size. Having
tried different options, the Notes text is always the same size.

2. You can specify a *Min font size*. This is limited to 6 to 14 size, with a
default of 6, but is only applicable to the data fields, buttons and some text
within the Individual's Information and has no effect on the Event details
display.

3. The only option which impacts on the Notes text size is the *Stretch fonts
when resizing* tick. When this is enabled, expanding the size of the Event
window will cause the font in the Notes text to be larger. I know that I had to
make it larger since I had the same problem with font size. From experience I
have found that I need the Event window to be about 35% of the display, but
that would be dependent on your display size so you will need to experiment to
find your best solution.

Chris

Re: [LegacyUG] import from family search

Open your new empty family file and enter the person you wish to download the
information for.

On the tool bar select Search > Family search. When the results show, choose
the one you wish to download.

Towards the top you should see an icon for Import tree. (You may have to
"Match" your individual first).

The family file will import into your new, empty tree.

Make sure you use a new empty tree because it is a bear to identify and remove
all these individual from your good file.

From my memory of when I set the colours many years ago, I used Vintage and

Brian,
the RTF formating for a paragraph looks like this in an ascii environment;

\par \pard\plain
\s0\widctlpar\hyphpar0\cf0\kerning1\dbch\af8\langfe2052\dbch\af6\afs24\alang1081\loch\f3\hich\af3\fs24\lang1033{\rtlch

Notice the "\par" with a backslash. I wish she would post one of the links she
is copying from. I would like to see it myself.

Have you tried hitting the "Strip HTML" button in the notes field? Copying
from the web can often also copy embedded code and symbols that need to be removed. It
is possible that this is what you are seeing.

It is not Legacy. It is windows. Windows remembers where a window was when the

You may have had a window open off screen when you closed Legacy and windows
put it back there

Here's one way to "rescue" such an off-screen window and bring it back onto the
active monitor:

Make the off-screen window the active window by clicking on its icon in the
Windows Taskbar.
Press Alt+Space, and then press the M key. ...
Press any arrow key once.

That is the primary reason I use Note Tab as an intermediate program. It immediately and instantly

]"space" replacing with ]^T (replaces the space following the ] with a tab. A search and
replace for "space^Pmarriage:: replace with "space^Tmarriage: removes the lf/cr and moves
the marriage info to the same line as the couple. This takes less that 30 seconds and results in
each marriage being on its own line. From there is is simple to copy into libre or open office for

Just search for everyone with an obituary and tag them with an unused tag.
Then search for everyone with a death date before 1961 (simpler) and death
place contains Tasmania and does not contain the .Tag (the tag you selected
above).

Simple, I thought, I'll just get Legacy to do a detailed search, and
then do a print-out of the people who currently don't have an obituary
notice; I should also say that within my Legacy database I have an Event
named Obituary that all newspaper death notices get grouped under.

My Search request looked like the following:

Individual >> Death Date >> Before >> 30 Dec 1960

AND

Individual >> Death Place >> Contains >> Tasmania

AND

Individual >> Event-Name >> Not Equal to >> Obituary

This doesn't appear to work, as the results list gives me people who do
have an Obituary event.

My question is: Am I doing something wrong here ?

re-enter it. If it is for all locations then you will have to contact Legacy for a
solution.

It occurred when I clicked on Edit in a Location. I need to enter the correct
coordinates for that location, but as soon as I click on Edit, in order to
enter the correct coordinates. Legacy freezes up, and tells me I have error
3420.

What is that error?

Why does Legacy Help not list it?

How do I overcome this?

I have done Check and Repair = no errors.

I close Legacy, but cannot reopen without going to Control-Alt-Delete to close
the leftover trace of Legacy.

Then I can reopen Legacy, but the next time I tried to edit the coordinates =
the very same problem.

What is going on?!

Legacy 7.5. Never had the problem before today.

Why is this error number not isted?

Re: [LegacyUG] Cannot open Legacy

2016-06-28 Thread Gene Young

Dave,
Brian gave an explanation in another email. If shutting down does not work the
next step is to search for and delete all files with an .ldb (lock data base)
extension.

 From Microsoft:
"Although .LDB files are typically removed when all users have closed the database,
one or more .LDB files may occasionally be left behind. When this occurs, these files are
safe to delete - they will be re-created the next time"

This file will prevent "another" instance of legacy from opening as it thinks
it is already open.

Why this 'urban myth' of waiting a minute or two. The power's off, there's
nothing left active in the machine. No need to wait.

It is not an Urban Myth. The reason for waiting is so all the capacitors have

Then it's probably not a family file problem, but a possibly program
problem. Intermittent problems can be exasperating. Perhaps a fresh
re-installation of Legacy will resolve the error 381. Please see the

Legacy 8.0 at http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00926. To do
a fresh download of Legacy Family Tree 8.0 Deluxe, please visit

This re-installation process will wipe out any customized setting you have
made. If you want to keep them, please see
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00983 for the steps to back
them up. (Be aware that sometimes it's the customized settings that are the
cause of a problem and restoring the settings may bring the problem back.)

My personal preference would be to back up the customized settings to a safe
location first then delete them. When Legacy recreates them, if the program
works as it should, the settings were the culprit and I would re-add them one
at a time to locate the offending file. If the problem persists you at least
know you can restore your customizations upon re-install.

A check of your mail header shows you are running AVG antivrus. A quick check
on Google shows a number of problems Eudora has with AVG. (That is one of the
reasons I dumped AVG and use Avast.) Since you appear to be the only one having
this problem I would suggest contacting Qualcom and asking them why their
program is misbehaving.

Note: I just went to that link and they want $42 to answer the question. That

If you are using the Deluxe version (and have activated it in your upgrade) and

She worked keeping a boarding house from 15 Apr 1910 in Christiansburg,

He worked as a house carpenter from 15 Apr 1910 in Christiansburg, Montgomery,

It really is not difficult. Say the path to the folder with the pictures is

IMG HREF=\Some_Server\Other_Language\my_picture ALT=My_Picture you just
have to change all occurrences of \Some_Server\MyPages\ to

You can accomplish this with a number of programs. I personally use BTR Wizard

You'll see plenty of hits if you search roxio installer keeps popping up

It's definitely a problem with Roxio and maybe you should contact their
 support.

I tried Microsoft's solution and it didn't work. It only asks to install or
uninstall. I don't want to do either. It's already installed and I want to
keep it. I just want to get Roxio to stop wanting to reconfigure every time
 I open Legacy.

Is it feasible (or do some of you do this already) to put your Legacy
family tree on your own website? I'm not talking about Ancestry.com or
any of those other sites where you can lose control - I'm talking about
your own website. For example, we have a website and it has some nice
features, but I would prefer to be able to display the information in
the Legacy format and with the great many features Legacy has to offer.
Is that being addressed somehow for the future (or maybe I just don't
know about it) - a way that we could use Legacy Family Tree software on
the World Wide Web - with proper purchase and licensing requirements, of
 course? Thanks! --Jerry Boor, MerriamFamilyTree.org

Yes it is, and many members have done so.
See http://myyoungs.atspace.com/index.htm This is my site created with Legacy
Family Tree and edited for appearance.
