Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report

2017-11-16 Thread Cathy Pinner
Dennis,
As soon as you enter Unknown you deprive yourself of the different ways
Legacy has of searching for or displaying in Reports that information is
unknown. See the option in Book reorts to add underlines for missing
information and the multiple searches on the Search-missing information tab.

For me, blanks are a far more obvious indicator than any word.

"married unknown" is no better to me than "married someone."

I've already explained how easy it is to change to just "married."

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report

2017-11-16 Thread Dennis Murphy
I abhor blanks as well so I always use "Unknown" when a person or date is
unknown. Since my reports are usually sent to relatives and/or other
genealogists, I advisee them to please contact me regarding any of my
unknowns for which they may have better information. Also it's nice to be
able to readily spot this missing data and create Legacy search lists for
particular unknown items before heading out to the various repositories. To
keep my Master Name index in a logical order, I have a Master Surname as
(Unknown) so that a completely unknown person appears in my database as
Unknown (Unknown) - first with no parentheses and surname with parentheses.
It may seem awkward but it works and keeps well with lists and indices.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report

2017-11-14 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ruth,
That's good. I thought it probably did if you hadn't edited the Wording tab.

Yes Jennifer - I just omit the "someone" and leave married

Same for relationships - "had a relationship" though hidden within
Legacy is another option that overrides that one and it generally reads
"had a child." Since I prefer that for most cases, I don't fuss too much
about it.

Cathy,
Thanks. I went to the location you mentioned and deleted the word
"someone" and clicked on "SAVE" and it corrected it on all the people
I had with no known spouse name. The "married someone" just looked
extremely awkward to me. Right now I just have "married" until I can
think of something better that would fit. Thanks again.

The Option that controls this is Options - Customise 8.7
You can change the wording there to get rid of the "someone" - I do.
There is no Apply button or Refresh on the marriage screen so I'm not
positive that it updates automatically or whether it is for future
entries. I don't think it overwrites if you have already made your own
Wording options.

Ruth:

Go to the person that has no wife and click on their Marriage
information below the two people in family view.

In this window, select the Tab at top that says: Wording Options.

You can change the wording options to whatever you like there for that
couple.
Try a few things and print/preview a report and see what your changes
look like in the report.

You will need to do this for each family you do not have a spouse for
if you want the wording changed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report

2017-11-14 Thread Ruth Mohr
Thank you for your help. I guess I was hoping for changing something that
would change it on all people involved at one time (that would be too
easy). So I will have to try your suggestion and the suggestion of Leon
and do it the proper way.

As far as the dates you were inquiring about. If I chick on "Name List" -
at the bottom left is:
"Print" and I click on that. Up comes a "List Report Options Page" and
I have the following options checked:
  Surnames
  Sex
  Birthdate
  Death Date
  Spouse.
This gives me a list chart of all in my program. I do not check RIN@
because that changes with deleting or adding people - I just keep it in
alphabetical order. If a person does not have any of the dates or spouse
it just leaves those columns blank, but the person is still listed.

I am not sure this helps with what you are looking for, but hope it does.
Thanks again. Ruth

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report

2017-11-14 Thread Leon Chapman
Ruth:

Here is more information from the Help file about the Wording Options Tab.

*Wording Options Tab*

*Family View Labels*

Choose the labels you would like to use when displaying this marriage
couple. The default labels are *Husb* and *Wife*.

*Default Report Phrases if this is the First Marriage*

The traditional (and default) phrase used when printing reports is "
*married*". John married Sarah..., or Sarah married John If the *This
couple did not marry *option has been selected, the default changes to "*had
a relationship with*". John had a relationship with Sarah..., or Sarah had
a relationship with John (The defaults for these two phrases can be
changed globally in the *Options > Customize > View > Default Family View
Labels and Report Wording *box.) If you want to change the phrase for this
marriage/partnership only, you can type a new phrase into the box. Keep in
mind that this phrase is used to build the beginning of a sentence. The
sentence will then have the date and place added to it. John married Sarah
on 12 Dec 1888 in London, England...

*Overriding the Report Phrases*

If you would like to completely change the narrative wording that Legacy
normally uses to construct a sentence for a report, you can change it to
anything you want to. Whereas the default wording above automatically
inserts the first name of each of the spouses/partners, these new override
phrases does not. You must include the names in the phrase. This gives
you the option to modify the names and to change the order of the
parts. Johnny
took Sarah as his wife ... or Johnny and Sarah got married ... or John
married his high school sweetheart Sarah Again, this is the beginning
portion of a sentence that will have the date and location added to it, so
keep this in mind.

You must construct two versions of the sentence, one describing the
husband's first marriage (or partnership) and the other describing the
wife's first marriage.

*Default Report Phrases if this is Not the First Marriage*

Similar to the wording for a first marriage, the default phrase used for a
second or later marriage is "*next married*" or "*next had a relationship
with*". John next married Sarah..., or Sarah next had a relationship with
John If you want to change the phrase for this subsequent
marriage/partnership only, you can type a new phrase into the box.

*Overriding the Report Phrases*

Just as with the first marriage, you can enter your own wording for later
marriages. Later in his life Johnny got remarried to Ruth ... or Several
years after her divorce, Sarah met a man named Alfred and they were married
Again, this is the beginning portion of a sentence that will have the
date and location added to it, so don't put a period at the end.

Again, as with the first marriage, you must construct two versions of the
sentence.

*Other word substitutes*

You can also change the terms *Spouse* and *Marriage* to other words that
will be used in various reporting situations.

2017-11-14 Thread Leon Chapman
Ruth:

Go to the person that has no wife and click on their Marriage information
below the two people in family view.
In this window, select the Tab at top that says: Wording Options.

You can change the wording options to whatever you like there for that
couple.
Try a few things and print/preview a report and see what your changes look
like in the report.

You will need to do this for each family you do not have a spouse for if
you want the wording changed.

I think this can only be changed in the Marriage/Relationship
Information window for each listing you want to change (i.e., there is
no "global" setting for this that I know of).
With the appropriate Family tab opened, click the Marriage Events button
(screen center - righthand side), then Wording Options and modify or
delete the phrase.

By chance, Ruth, do you know a solution to a similar problem I posted
earlier today?
Is there a way to suppress (remove) blank spaces in reports?
Specifically, I'm printing a Name List (Index) Report, and for every
listing that lacks birth and death dates, it prints thusly:

John DOE ( - )

Is there a way to eliminate the blanks where there is no data present?

Unlike Win7, Windows10 includes a built-in PDF reader using the Edge browser
which it sets as the default PDF viewer. If your Win7 system was automatically
upgraded to Win10 in the dark of the night by Microsoft, usually such
applications such as other PDF viewers are still available for your use in
Win10. Once in a great while, either the Win10 upgrade fails for a particular
program or else that particular viewer may not have been compatible with Win10.
I suspect that the old one you used to use on your Win7 machine is still there,
but Microsoft is trying to force you to use Edge instead. You may have to hunt
for it in the alphabetized list of “All Apps” after clicking on the Start
window thingie in the lower left of Windows.

Just google “PDF Viewers in Win10” and you’ll get a list of multiple programs
that you can download and install to view PDF files. The most commonly used
viewer is Adobe Reader which is free. Just go to “adobe.com” and click on any
link that says “Get Adobe Reader”. I would caution you to not get click happy
while on the Adobe web site because by default Adobe will include the Google
Chrome browser, make it your default browser, and add the Google Toolbar to
your browser unless you un-check those boxes.

You may then wish to visit the Legacy “Customization Settings – Launch” and
check to see what if anything you have entered for any of the programs that
Legacy will use to view various types of file formats. These programs include
web browsers, word processors, text editors, and PDF viewers. Most users leave
these blank which means Legacy will use whatever program Windows has been told
is the default program for that file type. So if Edge is the default browser
and PDF reader for your computer , then this is why you are seeing Edge to view
the PDF files. If you installed Adobe Reader or any other PDF viewer AND then
tell Windows to use that program by default, Legacy would then open Adobe
Reader to view your report. This is also where you can tell Legacy to use
Firefox or Chrome or Internet Explorer to view your HTML formatted reports
while you may wise to keep using Edge as your default browser (don’t know why
anybody would actually do that….). While in this customization section, just
remember that DEFAULT means for Legacy to use whatever Windows has been told is
the default. You need only enter something if you want for Legacy to use
something different.

Good Morning Margaret,

Was the report you created saved to pdf format?

If so, the Win 10 version of Internet Explorer is called 'Edge', symbolized by
and "E" and has an imbedded pdf reader.

And if you do not have another pdf reader installed, it becomes the default,
thus printing your pdf document.

Oh my!!! This is so confusing to this old brain of mine. What happened to
the one in Legacy that I used on my Windows 7 machine? Or was that
controlled by Microsoft also? I don't think I have anything else on my PC
to change it to. I will have to find someone to help me do all this. I am
not good at all this kind of computer stuff.
Thank you for all your help.

Win 10 does use the Edge browser as the default reader of .pdf documents.
However, you can change that default either when installing a different Acrobat
application (I use Acrobat Pro) or later. Occasionally when adding a Win 10
patch I have had that pdf default changed.

If you have an application you use as your default pdf software and that
default has changed, go to System > Default apps > Choose default apps by file

[LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report Issue

2016-06-03 Thread Margaret Gagliardi
I created an Ancestor Book Report. I have Windows 10. When I went to
print it, it brought up the "E" for Internet Explorer and took forever to
print, double sided. The report was 167 pages. There was about a 30
second pause between printing 1 page double sided.

My question is why did it bring up the Internet Explorer to print it? And
what caused it to take so long to print. About 1/2 hour or more.

Thanks
Margaret

[LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report question

2015-01-25 Thread Mary Young
Ancestor Book Report Report Options Event Narrative Format Bullet Point,
Number, or Nothing Precing Each Event, results in each Event being shown on
a separate line BUT events are separated by horizontal lines. Can these
be de-selected? I like Events on separate lines, but the lines are very
dominant, wasteful of ink and IMHO completely unnecessary.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor book report - spouse events

2013-11-21 Thread Paula Ryburn
Paul, To get back to the basic question...  A workaround for this one issue
would be to produce RTF/Word documents and remove the duplicated events for the
first generation in each report.  I doubt a request to add that particular
functionality would bubble to the top of an enhancement queue, surely not
within your timeframe (given that v8 still has not been released).

What other things are giving you problems, making the ancestor book report less
than half decent ?  There are many folks on this list with more experience in
using the Publishing Center than I have.  Perhaps they could answer other
specific questions you have.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Ancestor book report - spouse events

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone with any experience of producing ancestor book reports
may be able to offer some advise with a problem I have.

I'm tying to put together an Ancestor book report through the
publishing centre in Legacy 7.5 to give to my parents, aunts uncles. As
such I thought of producing 2 ancestor report books, one based on my grandad,
the other based on my grandmother, that way the report is not based on any one
child (such as my dad) and is applicable to all.

The trouble is, when I produce my grandad's report, in order to see his
numerous life events and photos that I've attached to them, I've had to select
Events for husband and wife in the Options for Ancestor Books
window, but this also displays all my grand mother's life events as well.

Then when I produce my grandmother's report, again I have a similar
situation where as well as seeing all her life events which I want, I again see
all my grandad's life events as well. It looks a bit poor repeating the same
content so I was wondering if there's a way round this because so far I've not
found it?

I've got to admit I'm finding it quite a challenge trying to get a half
decent looking book produced from Legacy about my family history to give to my
family.

regards
Paul

2013-11-21 Thread Paula Ryburn
I think the one issue about printing events differently for the first
generation in one report because of how you want to produce two separate
reports does not warrant anger.  Legacy is still the best.  That is, none are
perfect.

Further, I know the Legacy folks want to hear about both bugs and suggested new
features (and anything in between).

What's this, pick on a new user and new member to the forum!

Ron, when I said 'use in anger' was wasn't referring to me being angry, just
the fact I'm trying to use the program to its fullest capability. It's a common
enough phrase.

I e-mailed my problem to the forum hoping to find other people who've
encountered similar issues with book reports and perhaps receive practical and
useful advice. Instead it seems some people have nothing better to do other
than criticise and what I say and my experience so far with Legacy. If this is
the purpose of the forum then I'm very disappointed and will probably
unsubscribe.

I didn't think my question was unreasonable and I certainly didn't expect
criticism.

2013-11-20 Thread James Cook
You are not alone in your frustrations. While legacy is good at data
entry, you are not the first, nor will you be the last, in voicing
frustrations over the inability to get your own data back out of it. The
archives are full of workarounds to address these issues too - locations vs
addresses, single pics per event, no BMD pics, and so on. I'm surprised
there isn't plugin packages available for reports, web page generation and
even GEDCOM like there is for charts. I suppose the definition of 'basic'
is somewhat subjective, but at a minimum you should be able to get on
individual, ancestor or descendant reports all the facts, all the pictures,
all the addresses (and the rest of the other hostage data issues that go
around these threads re: reports) on all the people included in the report
(print option flags to turn on or off would be fine). Likewise, well
formed source writer citations in GEDCOMs (save the 'can't reimport'
comebacks, that's a horrible way to share data between Legacy DBs and is
irrelevant to the need of well formed GEDCOM exports).

It would be much, much, much better to get a report with all my data
included and let me whittle it down than only getting partial data back and
trying to determine what was NOT included and manually adding it in. This
is a fair criticism and only a request for complete basic vs partial
basic.

Finally, you are not the first to note the hostile tone that comes through
in this group. I've been around a while and still find it very odd! If
you don't let it get to you, and look past it, the group really is quite
helpful.

You said 'use in anger' is a common enough phrase. FYI - I am a 66 year old
American if that makes a difference and I had never heard this phrase used
in this manner so I Googled it here

Now I understand what you were saying. I too read this as you were using

Rarely do the majority of people on this list criticize others. I have
received more support from this list than any other I have used. Give it a

Paul,

Legacy is a relational database and uses Access. What it emphatically is not is
a wordprocessor, nor in my view should it ever contain one.

In the same way as it creates basic websites it creates basic reports. Using
other software Legacy generated webpages can be changed. Save reports as rtf
files and they can be amended in WORD or OO.org Writer.

As a programmer you should know that programs are designed to fulfill specific
functions, in the case of Legacy to store data and enable its retrieval. The
rest is a bonus.

[LegacyUG] Ancestor book report - spouse events

2013-11-19 Thread Paul Richardson
Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone with any experience of producing ancestor book
reports may be able to offer some advise with a problem I have.

I'm tying to put together an Ancestor book report through the publishing
centre in Legacy 7.5 to give to my parents, aunts uncles. As such I
thought of producing 2 ancestor report books, one based on my grandad, the
other based on my grandmother, that way the report is not based on any one
child (such as my dad) and is applicable to all.

The trouble is, when I produce my grandad's report, in order to see his
numerous life events and photos that I've attached to them, I've had to
select Events for husband and wife in the Options for Ancestor Books
window, but this also displays all my grand mother's life events as well.

Then when I produce my grandmother's report, again I have a similar
situation where as well as seeing all her life events which I want, I again
see all my grandad's life events as well. It looks a bit poor repeating the
same content so I was wondering if there's a way round this because so far
I've not found it?

I've got to admit I'm finding it quite a challenge trying to get a half
decent looking book produced from Legacy about my family history to give to
my family.

Paul

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor book report - spouse events

2013-11-19 Thread Carolyn
Hi Paul,

Here is my solution, I select the person I want to create the report about,
then select a descendants narrative report, create the PDF and save it to a
folder.
Next I open the PDF, then copy and paste the contents into a WORD document.
This way I have the ‘bones’ of the story, and can add in pictures, newspaper
clippings, certificates, etc, plus change the stilted wording.
The descendants narrative report covers all children, so does not focus on any
one child.
Give it a try and see if this will suit your needs.

I'm wondering why you create PDF and then copy/paste into Word, rather than
creating rich text format and opening with Word...?  I just quickly created a

The descendants narrative report covers all children, so does not focus on
any one child.
Give it a try and see if this will suit your needs.

2013-11-19 Thread Paula Ryburn
Paul, I see your point.  It might make more sense to have it be two tick marks:
Show Individual Events and Show Spouse Events... followed by the Show
Marriage Events.  Of course, that would have to apply to all individuals and
their spouses in each generation of the report (programmatically logical),
whereas what you're wanting is to just drop them on the first generation
spouse, right?  Perhaps Carolyn's suggestion is a better way to go.  You could
then delete the first generation spouse's events.

It looks a bit poor repeating the same
content so I was wondering if there's a way round this because so far I've not
found it?

I've got to admit I'm finding it quite a challenge trying to get a half
decent looking book produced from Legacy about my family history to give to my
family.

regards
Paul

2013-11-19 Thread Paul Richardson
Hi,

Thanks for the advise so far.

Paula, you're spot on in that I only want to disable spouse events for the
1st generation. When I moved to Legacy a few years back the reviews
suggested this was one of the best packages for report generation and book
publishing, however now I'm trying to use it in anger I have to say I'm
quite disappointed at its capability and limitations such as this.

I've so far encountered numerous issues such as only one picture per event
can be displayed or no pictures are displayed for marriages, but bit by bit
I'm trying to find workarounds and at the moment this ones stumping me.

I'm not keen on generating pdfs or rtfs and then re-editing docs. after all
what's the point of the publishing center if thats what you have to resort
to. I also work as a software engineer and I'm used to using tools that
generate manuals from basic text and information in the code, so if we can
do this for the software industry I'd have though it could have been done
in Legacy as well.

regards
Paul

Probably because I am used to using the PDF option, will take a look at RTF and
see how I like it.
Thanks for the tip Paula.

For the price, what you get with Legacy is cheap. If you want something a bit
more professional-looking, the solution is going to cost you money that you
could probably better spend on more research.

As for your throw-away comment concerning tools within software for generating
documentation... I'm also a developer and the general-purpose tools built-in to
development software are in my opinion, largely, a piece of crap! There is
nothing that couldn't be improved with the judicious use of a good Technical
Writer.

Same goes for Legacy. If you want something that looks good, you have to do some
extra work to achieve it. Legacy is never going to write your books for you. All
it can do is lift the basic information out of the database in a
semi-presentable form that can be further manipulated. After all, the main
raison-d'etre for Legacy is the database and the recording of facts discovered
through research.
