Re: Historical data for performance of Linux
Thank you for all of you. I think that this redpaper would be helpful for me right now. However as many of you mentioned, it'll be needed some other product for performance monitoring for our customers using zLinux images on z/VM, I think. Anyway, I wonder that how do the customers using zLinux for their business in other countries monitor or charge-back their z/VM and zLinux. Are almost of the customers really using some of product for performance monitoring like ESALPS/Performance Toolkit? If so, how many linux images are running? Or are there some of customers using in-house program for monitoring/charge-back? 2008/5/28, Michael MacIsaac [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Jae-hwa, Are there any ways to collecting and saving the performance data? How does the other customers running Linux on their mainframe manage the performance data for chargeback or planning for capacity? Historical data for performance of Linux
Hi, Some of our customer have an issue for accumulating their performance data of Linux servers and z/VM. They wants to get the historical performance data for Linux and z/VM itself. However the customers don't have any budgets at the time, and they have only Performance Toolkit, no other monitoring tools like OMEGAMON XE, ESALPS, etc. Are there any ways to collecting and saving the performance data? How does the other customers running Linux on their mainframe manage the performance data for chargeback or planning for capacity? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Re: Historical data for performance of Linux
Thank you for your consideration, Tim. I need the way for collecting performance data of Linux at z/VM side. And it'll be better if I could save the data from z/VM to mysql or files on the other Linux server. Is it possible to read and get the files from CMS using cmsfs driver at Linux? I think that it could be possible to save the perf. data using this cmsfs, couldn't it? Re: Draft Redpaper: z/VM and Linux on IBM System z: Implementing a Shared Root File System
Michael, How about rpm update works(except kernel updates) for these systems using shared root fs? Are there any ways to apply the updates to many cloned system? Regards, Jae-hwa 2007/10/30, Michael MacIsaac [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Nigel, any plans for a version based on Red Hat ? The short answer is no - we had relatively few cycles on the residency which was really just two people for one week. However, thinking about it, the mkror.sh script should only need a few small changes. I'm not sure how different SuSE and Red Hat are with their statup scripts (/etc/init.d/boot and /etc/init.d/boot.rootfsck in SLES 10), but there would almost certainly be work to do there. If someone were to get this working quickly on RHEL and report back the changes needed, there is some chance the paper and tar file could be updated. z/VM Cloning
Hi, I'd like to make a clon of z/VM server for some other new linux systems. But I'm using DIRMAINT and RACF on z/VM now, so it's a little difficult. Without DIRMAINT/RACF, I've made some clon of z/VM server. With DIRMAINT, how can I do this cloning? First of all, I made DDR dump of 430RES, 430W01, 430SMF. And IPL this VM under the second level VM with only 3 vols. And Changed SYSTEM CONFIG file with new volume name like S43RES, S43W01, S43SMF. If it has no DIRMAINT, I would change USER DIRECT file with new vols name and issue DIRECTXA command. and using CPFMTXA command I change VOLS physical NAME. But I don't know about DIRMAINT case. DB2 UDB on SLES-8 s390x
Hi, One of our customer's applications is a big and running on OS/390 now. This application will migrate to Linux/390. So I installed SLES 8 64bit version on our z/VM 4.3. The application will have much more memory and cpu power, so it will be running on the 64bit better than 31bit, I think. But the following problem is occurred. db2 list application does not work. db2 starts ok, but when I issue some db2 command like 'list application', db2 doesn't reply. Can use VTS or ATL on Linux/390?
Hello, Our customer's mainframe application will migrate to Linux on zSeries is using VTS. The application is storing some data to VTS and reading it from VTS. Is there any solutions for using VTS or ATL under Linux on zSeries? UTS Global has the product for STK SILO, but we have only VTS, ATL. If you have any idea for this situation, please let me know. How can I use hipersocket on RH's s390x?
Hi, there. I'm trying to install the latest RH's s390x on my z900. And I'm going to use virtual hipersocket between VM TCPIP and other Linux guests. I applied several PTFs that required for hipersocket on z/VM 4.2. And I downloaded qdio/qeth(8) oco modules from developerworks site. But RH's kernel(2.4.9-21.blabla-6sx) couldn't load qdio/qeth module with 'unresolved symbol tasklet-blabla'. What should I do now? Re: UDB 7.2 install problems on SuSE 7.2
Bill, You can install RedHat's compat rpms on SLES-7. You can find these files from my web page or RedHat's ftp site. http://linux390.linuxkorea.co.kr/~kingcrab/s390/ I'm using these compat packages and I have running WAS 4.0 UDB 7.2 on SLES-7 server now. Re: Redhat ISO Images?

(Of course, if that were true, how would you download the .iso files?) The bottom line is, .iso files are a convenience for people who want to make real CDs. If you don't need that, don't worry. If you _do_ need that, then the software on your CD burner should be able to handle the job of transferring the files from a PC to the CD. CD images are a convenient way of Packaging stuff for download - get the image, check the sum and you know whether you've got that bundle Storing stuff when not in use. CD storage is cheaper than online disk. A CD that boots on your desktop might make a handy NFS server to install from. I recall problems with SUSE not installing from NT servers. (A bootable DVD might be even handier;-)) The software for your CD burner might not package the files convenently. Red Hat's procedures do. Downloadable CD images are GOOD. Yes, In my case, the connection was very unstable and slow, it took about 10days to download whole tree. It was terrible. So, I made ISO files from this downloaded tree except SRPMS. If you need this ISO files, please let me know. Or if this is no problem to put these files on internet server, I'll put them on public area.
