Re: Historical data for performance of Linux

2008-06-01 Thread Jae-hwa Park
Thank you for all of you.
I think that this redpaper would be helpful for me right now. However
as many of you mentioned, it'll be needed some other product for
performance monitoring for our customers using zLinux images on z/VM,
I think.

Anyway, I wonder that how do the customers using zLinux for their
business in other countries monitor or charge-back their z/VM and
zLinux. Are almost of the customers really using some of product for
performance monitoring like ESALPS/Performance Toolkit? If so, how
many linux images are running? Or are there some of customers using
in-house program for monitoring/charge-back?

2008/5/28, Michael MacIsaac [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 Jae-hwa,

Are there any ways to collecting and saving the performance data?
How does the other customers running Linux on their mainframe manage
the performance data for chargeback or planning for capacity?

There's a good Redpaper Accounting and Monitoring for z/VM Linux guest
machines, number 3818, on the Web at
 http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/redp3818.html

Historical data for performance of Linux

2008-05-27 Thread Jae-hwa Park
Hi,

Some of our customer have an issue for accumulating their performance
data of Linux servers and z/VM. They wants to get the historical
performance data for Linux and z/VM itself. However the customers
don't have any budgets at the time, and they have only Performance
Toolkit, no other monitoring tools like OMEGAMON XE, ESALPS, etc.

Are there any ways to collecting and saving the performance data?
How does the other customers running Linux on their mainframe manage
the performance data for chargeback or planning for capacity?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Historical data for performance of Linux

2008-05-27 Thread Jae-hwa Park
Thank you for your consideration, Tim.

I need the way for collecting performance data of Linux at z/VM side.
And it'll be better if I could save the data from z/VM to mysql or
files on the other Linux server.

Is it possible to read and get the files from CMS using cmsfs driver
at Linux? I think that it could be possible to save the perf. data
using this cmsfs, couldn't it?

Thanks in advance,
Jae-hwa

 Nigel,

any plans for a version based on Red Hat ?
The short answer is no - we had relatively few cycles on the residency
which was really just two people for one week.

However, thinking about it, the mkror.sh script should only need a few
small changes. I'm not sure how different SuSE and Red Hat are with their
statup scripts (/etc/init.d/boot and /etc/init.d/boot.rootfsck in SLES
10), but there would almost certainly be work to do there. If someone were
to get this working quickly on RHEL and report back the changes needed,
there is some chance the paper and tar file could be updated.

Hello list,

Does anyone have a simple wrapper around SSH to run the same command on
multiple Linuxes?

If I have key-based authentication set up from one server to another
server, call it linux01, I can issue the command:
 # ssh linux01 ls /root
 bin
and see the output from linux01 without needing a password.

But let's say I'd like to issue that command on 5 different linuxes. I
could call the command dssh and define a group linuxes that consist of
linux01-linux05. Then I could issue the command:
 # dssh linuxes ls /root
 linux01:
 bin
 linux02:
 bin
 linux03:
 bin
 linux04:
 bin
 linux05:

DB security encryption tools?

2007-05-31 Thread Jae-hwa Park

Hi,

Are there any products that secures data at the database level, with
no programming required and supports zLinux?

Our customer wants to deploy db security encryption tool(?) on their
db2 server(DB2 UDB 8.2, SLES-9 64bit on z990). According to customer's
study, tools are not support zLinux. (Secure.Data, DataSecure,
D'Amo(Korean Product), CubeOne(Korean products))

Are there anybody knows about this kind of products?

Thanks in advance.

CPU Usage Measurement for Linux

2007-02-06 Thread Jae-hwa Park

Hello,

I'm running 50 linux images on 2 zSeries systems(z900, z990) for

mips. I've used vmprf monwrite for this. Is this the right way?

Are there any other method for this pricing by mips? If there are,
please let me know how can I set it up.

ORACLE 10g RAC on zLinux

Are there any hints and tips for installing RAC on zLinux? I've alread
read the redbook - Experiences with Oracle 10g Database for Linux on

Are there any references for ORACLE 10g RAC on zLinux under the

using? ORACLE 10g R2? z/VM 5.2? 5.1? ...

Thanks.

How can I get the SYSTEM DUMP file?

Hi,

It's VM question.
Using VMDUMP in the ASSORTEDPARMS session of PROFILE TCPIP, I got the
VMDUMP file for the TCPIP. How can I get this VMDUMP file from spool device?
I can see this file from rdr list like the below.

Q RDR
TCPIP0004 V DMP 00020906 001 NONEOFF OFF

I was tried to receive this file using receive command, but it's not a
valid way, I think.

Please let me know if you have any idea.

z/VM Cloning

2004-05-31 Thread Jae-hwa Park
Hi,

I'd like to make a clon of z/VM server for some other new linux systems.
But I'm using DIRMAINT and RACF on z/VM now, so it's a little difficult.
Without DIRMAINT/RACF, I've made some clon of z/VM server. With DIRMAINT,
how can I do this cloning?

First of all, I made DDR dump of 430RES, 430W01, 430SMF.
And IPL this VM under the second level VM with only 3 vols.
And Changed SYSTEM CONFIG file with new volume name like S43RES, S43W01, S43SMF.

If it has no DIRMAINT, I would change USER DIRECT file with new vols name and
issue DIRECTXA command. and using CPFMTXA command I change VOLS physical
NAME.

But I don't know about DIRMAINT case. Please let me know if you have any
idea. Thanks.

DB2 UDB on SLES-8 s390x

2004-05-08 Thread Jae-hwa Park
Hi,

One of our customer's applications is a big and running on OS/390 now. This
application will migrate to Linux/390. So I installed SLES 8 64bit version
on our z/VM 4.3. The application will have much more memory and
cpu power, so it will be running on the 64bit better than 31bit, I think.

On the SLES 8 64bit(s390x with SP3), we(with our db2 engineer) installed
DB2 UDB V8.1.5(FP5). But the following problem is occurred.

db2 list application does not work.

db2 starts ok, but when I issue some db2 command like 'list application',
db2 doesn't reply. So, I gathered trace for this command using strace32.
you can see this trace file from
http://php.sarang.net/down/ibm/temp/db2-list-app.log .

If you have any idea for this problem, please let me know.

Thanks in advanced.

Is there any solutions for using VTS or ATL under Linux on zSeries?

How to assign cpus to linux guest?

   | | | | | | | | | |- 25% spare element
   +---+ +---+ +---+ +---+ +---+

Like the above, I want to give two 50% of cpu to one linux guest and
when a linux guest need some more power, I'd like to assign 25% of
spare(?) cpu to the linux guest. Is it possible?

What kind of command or method?

Can I use SET SHARE command?

Just run 'mkswap' - depending on your kernel (and on
whether you made it CMS reserved) either the FBA or
the diag code in the dasd driver will pick it up and
treat it as a disk with just one partition for the
 entire disk.

Thank you, Rob.

It works for me. Just run mkswap and swapon.

Thanks again. :-)

When I get some service or updates done to my test Linux server, that's
actually the easy part. Then I have to move it around to more than a dozen
other Linux servers, logging on to each one in turn and doing an FTP get
for each file on each server. As I get more servers running, this problem
 will only get worse.

I'd like to automate this, with a single script to consult a list of servers
and a list of files to be placed on each server. Then with a single command
from my central distribution server, I could automatically update files on
all the other servers. This presumes a service userid with the same
password on all servers, changed frequently.

Is there anything like wget, except doing puts instead of gets? Is
there anything else I might use? I really want to have to avoid logging on
to each and every server. Bonus if it would preserve ownership and
 permissions.

Well, this might be the solution for you, I think.
Use 'lftp' and .netrc file.

Here's urgly example:

.netrc (permission: 0400)
machine sml01 login opc password opc
machine sml02 login opc password opc
machine sml03 login opc password opc
machine sml04 login opc password opc

putscript.sh
#!/bin/bash

lftp -u opc sml01 -e 'lcd /home/sml01; cd /home/www; mirror -R; exit'
lftp -u opc sml02 -e 'lcd /home/sml02; cd /home/www; mirror -R; exit'
lftp -u opc sml03 -e 'lcd /home/sml03; cd /home/www; mirror -R; exit'
lftp -u opc sml04 -e 'lcd /home/sml04; cd /home/www; mirror -R; exit'

How about this?

How can I use hipersocket on RH's s390x?

2002-03-15 Thread Jae-hwa Park

Hi, there.

I'm trying to install the latest RH's s390x on my z900.
And I'm going to use virtual hipersocket between VM TCPIP and
other Linux guests.

I applied several PTFs that required for hipersocket on z/VM 4.2.
And I downloaded qdio/qeth(8) oco modules from developerworks site.

But RH's kernel(2.4.9-21.blabla-6sx) couldn't load qdio/qeth module
with 'unresolved symbol tasklet-blabla'. What should I do now?

course, if that were true, how would you download the .iso files?) The
bottom line is, .iso files are a convenience for people who want to make

CD images are a convenient way of
Packaging stuff for download - get the image, check the sum and you
know whether you've got that bundle
Storing stuff when not in use. CD storage is cheaper than online disk.

A CD that boots on your desktop might make a handy NFS server to
install from. I recall problems with SUSE not installing from NT
servers. (A bootable DVD might be even handier;-))

The software for your CD burner might not package the files
 convenently. Red Hat's procedures do.

 Downloadable CD images are GOOD.

Yes, In my case, the connection was very unstable and slow, it took about
10days to download whole tree. It was terrible.

So, I made ISO files from this downloaded tree except SRPMS. If you need
this ISO files, please let me know. Or if this is no problem to put these
files on internet server, I'll put them on public area.
