I think I answered my own question there. It seems to come down to that issue:
no easy route from XeTeX to LaTeX for latex2rtf to work. Kinda obvious I guess!

All this so I can give my thesis chapters to supervisors in Word for feedback
via track changes. I think it would have been simpler to just install LyX on
their machines...

Hi all. I've read the instructions for using latex2rtf with LyX here

get it to work. This is on v2.0.4 on a Win7 box (but I also have an OS X
setup). I've installed latex2rtf as the Win exe and to get around the white
space issue I've made a junction from d:\utils\latex2rtf -- c:\Program Files
(x86)\latex2rtf. I believe this is working correctly as it's picked up in
the configuration log:
INFO: checking for a LaTeX - RTF converter...
INFO: +checking for latex2rtf...  no
INFO: +checking for latex2rt...  yes
DEBUG: Add to RC:
\converter latex  rtflatex2rt -p -S -o $$o $$ineedaux

But nothing I've tried has made the RTF option appear in the File - Export
menu, or View. I'm pretty hazy on what actually governs that in general to
be honest, as many options in Preferences are 'enabled' but do not appear

exist, so I tried running View - PDF (XeTeX) but no joy.

Jürgen helped me figure out what I was doing wrong: needed to also specify
IsPredefined = true (I had false). I also finally realised I was making the
rookie mistake of trying to specify my preamble inside of the Float
definition itself.

I offer up my chimera for anyone who might be interested. It does work
quite well, BUT! be warned that as best I can tell this is effectively
overriding float with floatrow in all instances, so some behaviour is going
to be modified.

* It took me a while to find that I needed to specify the \floatsetup
command (in floatrow form) to get table float captions back on top where
they belong.
(I've gone with \floatsetup[table]{style=plain,capposition=TOP})

* Use of [H] for floats (place here definitely) appears to trigger a
package clash with float/floatrow because, at a guess, [H] expects float to
be loaded. There is discussion of [H] in the floatrow manual but it's a
little beyond me so I've ignored that for now.

Hi all. It seems that when changing Document: Settings: Font to use non-TeX
fonts, LyX will then change the default viewer action to be DVI (LuaTeX).
This doesn't work for me as I'm trying to use XeTeX. Is it possible to
specify the default viewer in this context?

months now with no problems. Obvious question: is the E-TeX package
installed (eg, check in Tex Live Utility GUI)?

Windows users can create symlinks too. If they're still stuck on XP, you can
use junction 
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768.aspx(with
some messing about); anyone using Vista and up can use the native
'mklink' command for files directly. I do exactly this for my own .bib files
in the TEXMF local tree: symlink (or hard link if you prefer) to the source
.bib file in Dropbox, under both OS X and Win7.

Windows users can create symlinks too. If they're still stuck on XP, you can
use junction 
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768.aspx(with
some messing about); anyone using Vista and up can use the native
'mklink' command for files directly. I do exactly this for my own .bib files
in the TEXMF local tree: symlink (or hard link if you prefer) to the source
.bib file in Dropbox, under both OS X and Win7.

honoured.

Yes, these are the thesis set of template files that ship with LyX 2.0.

I tried adding this to the chapter template preamble. The error is removed,
but it seems to be because the commands are not processed — the cross ref
labels are not applied.

 these calls in

 \AtBeginDocument{%
 ...
 }

 so that they are executed after polyglossia (and babel).

Yes, these are the thesis set of template files that ship with LyX 2.0.

I tried adding this to the chapter template preamble. The error is removed,
but it seems to be because the commands are not processed — the cross ref
labels are not applied.

Hi all. I'm gingerly trying to switch over to LyX 2.0 (beta 1   2) and to
start using XeTeX so I can more easily access additional fonts. I'm writing
a thesis using the included thesis templates. Actually my current work uses
the template set sent out on these lists earlier in 2010, so I created brand
new sample files from the new 2.0 version to test the problems I'm about to
describe.


1. conflict with AMS package
I've found that simply activating XeTeX under *Document Settings –
Fonts*will cause parsing errors on viewing if the document also has
*Math Options – Use AMS math package* checked; eg, LaTeX Error: Command
`\Finv' already defined, etc. I think this is a known conflict between XeTeX
and the AMS package, is that right? By changing the setting to *Use AMS math
package automatically* though, these particular errors go away. Note that
this occurs in the generic default new document (*article* class) as well as
the *KOMA-script book *class that the thesis uses.

So for a 'simple' document — which has the automatic AMS math package option
checked by default anyway — this seems to fix the problem. But is that a
reasonable thing to do, or is the thesis template not initially configured
to use the auto version for good reason?

2. conflict in thesis template
Beyond that, changing to the automatic AMS math package in the thesis
document introduces new errors. In a brand new, entirely unmodified chapter
template file, XeTeX compilation now complains about the use of ' \addto

I just tested this in LyX 2.0 beta 2 on OS X and it worked fine — after I
changed the LyX pipe path (back) to ~/.lyxpipe, which is the default LyZ
setting. You could change LyZ alternatively of course.

Point being I think it's simply down to the pipe file path matching
correctly.

over (OS X 10.6). It installs and runs fine, but as best I can tell there is
no automated import of LyX 1.6.7 settings. Are there any (draft)
instructions available for walking the upgrade path? Are there any backwards
compatibility issues or conflicts to watch out for, or can the existing
LyX-1.6 user directory pretty much just be copied across? Ditto for
migrating actual documents.

+ image files are then under thesis/_src/images/
+ lyx files are in structure thesis/chapters/ch1/

So once inserting the image file through the Graphics dialogue in an example
file under thesis/chapters/ch1/chapter1.lyx — which will use the full,
system-specific file path — you then edit it to be a relative path. If
example image file is
/Users/justin/Dropbox/_PhD/thesis/_src/images/AR4/Fig7.20-aerosol_effects_schematic-semi-direct.png

then it should be changed to traverse (in my case) two directories back to
the shared root using the standard OS ../ pointer.

This is *exactly* the way I'm writing my thesis. It works fine, though I
won't call it elegant. If it's safe to assume your document and image files
all live within a shared logical root in your Dropbox directory, and all
.lyx files will be in either the single directory or a uniform directory
structure, you can just edit the file path of the target image in the
Graphics dialogue. That is,
+ doc root is /Users/justin/Dropbox/_PhD/thesis
+ image files are then under thesis/_src/images/
+ lyx files are in structure thesis/chapters/ch1/

So once inserting the image file through the Graphics dialogue in an example
file under thesis/chapters/ch1/chapter1.lyx — which will use the full,
system-specific file path — you then edit it to be a relative path. If
example image file is
/Users/justin/Dropbox/_PhD/thesis/_src/images/AR4/Fig7.20-aerosol_effects_schematic-semi-direct.png

then it should be changed to traverse (in my case) two directories back to
the shared root using the standard OS "../" pointer.

formatting cross references in KOMA-Script and a custom float

I've asked a few newbie questions about formatting cross references,
explicitly (thread

where Jürgen Spitzmüller helped me define a custom boxfloat inset. After
many (many) hours, I've finally managed to figure out how to do it all,
so... I thought it might be of some small use to report back. A big part of
the problem was me not thinking to say up front that I was using the thesis
template example posted to this list previously, which employs *KOMA-Script
(book)* document class. Another issue which finally let me solve it all was
realising that specifying a different English dialect was breaking the
intended functionality.

My goal was: 1. to get the custom boxfloat cross reference working as for
floats, tables, etc, with the text 'Box' prepended; and 2. change default
behaviour so that section, subsection, subsubsection are all referred to as
'section'.

*Solution*:


   - by default references in this are simply the numbers, and you have to
   do something to them to get the naming we want. Jürgen quite rightly
   suggested the use of

\newrefformat{box}{Box~\negthinspace\ref{#1}}


   - but note that this only works with *Formatted reference* type, as the
  command is specific to \prettyref



   - now the thesis template preamble included these lines to redefine the
   normal \ref command, using the \autoref functionality in {*hyperref*}. *It
   was not working for me.*

   label for any boxfloat must be inserted with the caption for numbering to
   work properly.*) I haven't been able to figure out how to define the
   \autoref version for a custom counter type, so for now all boxes must use
   *Formatted reference* type, which allows this command to take effect:

paragraph spacing*. For example, this hack (based on your original
code) doesn't
work, but if I use ERT to create a *framedpar* explicitly, it works fine.
The only difference my novice eyes can see is the fact that boxfloat is of
course a *float*, wrapped in the {float} package which is used to define the
custom boxfloat type with a LyX module.

need to change a few other things... so here's a shopping list:

1. align the caption left, and set font parameters. Can I do that with
{caption} package somehow; if not, where in the LaTeX preamble is that
controlled? (Attempts to change, eg, kern8pt haven't worked.)

2. separate paragraphs with blank line the same as LyX does for normal text;
add blank line after Box caption too.

** 3. make use of cross references to the Box Float label. At the moment
this doesn't work with reference (/ref) or Formatted reference
(/prettyref) modes — both simply produce 'subsection ??'. Most importantly I
just want the reference to be 'Box 1.1', same as for figure floats; the
numbering is crucial.

I'm frustrated not to be able to figure this out for myself but so far LaTeX
is continuing to defeat me...

automagically adds 'chapter', 'section', 'subsection', and 'Figure', most of
which are fine. But normally I would prefer to simply use 'section' for
actual subsections too.

able to find \prettyref's implementation sufficiently documented for LyX,
and what I have found seems to strongly imply it's use should be avoided.

preamble and it did work, but... the text is being prepended to the LyX

  There's no special LyX documentation. We just use prettyref as LaTeX
 would.


Yes I appreciate that. (And I've since realised the problem is some sort of
conflict with the document class.)

  Where's that? There are some issues with prettyref, mostly to do with
 internationalization and babel support. That's why 2.0 will by default use
 refstyle instead, we hope.


Other than the passing mention in the User Guide and Customization help
files, mostly some 'robust' discussion on this group from a couple of years
ago which referred to prettyref being effectively unsupported. I might start
working with LyX 2.0 alpha now then actually (suitably forewarned and files
backed up of course).

  What prettyref command did you use? Prettyref itself predefines several of
 these things, but you should be able to redefine them yourself.


Just this in the preamble, as an example: \newrefformat{sub}{TEST \ref{#1}}

It outputs as 'TEST subsection x.y.z' — the original subsection remains in
place. But that was with a document class of *book (KOMA-script)*, the
thesis template[1].

I just tried it with a new file, all LyX defaults (article class), and the
override works as you'd expect, replacing 'subsection' with 'TEST'. And in
fact it works fine for the box float customisation has Jürgen helped me
with. So obviously the problem is within the *scrbook *document class? I
don't really know how to solve that at this point but at least I know where
to look...

ago which referred to prettyref being effectively unsupported. I might start
working with LyX 2.0 alpha now then actually (suitably forewarned and files
backed up of course).

Just this in the preamble, as an example: \newrefformat{sub}{TEST \ref{#1}}

It outputs as 'TEST subsection x.y.z' — the original subsection remains in
place. But that was with a document class of *book (KOMA-script)*, the
thesis template[1].

I just tried it with a new file, all LyX defaults (article class), and the
override works as you'd expect, replacing 'subsection' with 'TEST'. And in
fact it works fine for the box float customisation has Jürgen helped me
with. So obviously the problem is within the *scrbook *document class? I
don't really know how to solve that at this point but at least I know where
to look...

I've been using this module and it's almost exactly what I need. I changed
the layout to NumberWithin = chapter to give me Box 1.1, 1.2, etc. But I
need to change a few other things... so here's a shopping list:

1. align the caption left, and set font parameters. Can I do that with
{caption} package somehow; if not, where in the LaTeX preamble is that
controlled? (Attempts to change, eg, kern8pt haven't worked.)

2. separate paragraphs with blank line the same as LyX does for normal text;
add blank line after Box caption too.

** 3. make use of cross references to the Box Float label. At the moment
this doesn't work with  (/ref) or Formatted reference
(/prettyref) modes — both simply produce 'subsection ??'. Most importantly I
just want the reference to be 'Box 1.1', same as for figure floats; the
numbering is crucial.

I'm frustrated not to be able to figure this out for myself but so far LaTeX
is continuing to defeat me...

Is it possible to control the format of cross references to labels so that I
can specify the text prepended to the label number? I realise LyX
automagically adds 'chapter', 'section', 'subsection', and 'Figure', most of

I could have sworn I had spellchecker working under OS X 10.6.2 (+ x64
extensions) last week, just by installing the aspell package in MacPorts
(v0.60.6_2). But since then it wouldn't work other than to occasionally *
almost* pop-up the checker window when frantically hitting F7 -- it would
flicker for the briefest moment but never appear. Command line tests of
aspell showed it was installed and working fine. Indeed, if I changed the
LyX preference to ispell -- not installed -- spell checker would complain,
so LyX *was* able to locate aspell.

Anyway.

I just installed the latest
cocoAspellhttp://people.ict.usc.edu/%7Eleuski/cocoaspell/(v2.1, with
Snow Leopard updates), which I haven't tried before, and
it now works fine in LyX 1.6.5. Mostly guessing, I selected a few of the
various English dictionaries available from the new spelling Preference Pane
cocoAspell installs. Perhaps that makes a difference somehow? I haven't
tried non-English dictionaries though.

I've actually found MacPorts http://www.macports.org/ far more reliable
than Fink. I think I read Fink is not being maintained properly anymore?
Porticus is also a nice GUI package manager for MacPorts too.

I've done some more reading of natbib itself (the included pdf) -- it's
pretty clear that if natbib is set to *author-year* style, then the standard
\cite command behaves as \citet; if set to *numerical *style, \cite behaves
as \citep.

You can see this in LyX when using natbib under Document - Settings -
Bibliography: Citation style. If Natbib is chosen and set to author-year,
the LyX source code shows citations as \citet; if you change that setting to
numerical, the source code updates them to \citep. So I take this to mean
that LyX is using \cite, err, 'internally', and the source output reflects
the implementation in the natbib package.

Is it possible to control this in LyX somehow; to tell LyX to issue \citep
explicitly and never use \cite? Can a natbib .cfg or .sty file change the
