Re: Facebook is getting on my nerves.

Even Menutab isn't ideal with the way they are changing the site. FB has become
more and more difficult to use, and the way they re-arranged the newsfeed made
it all 10 times worse. I'm getting to the point where I might consider one of
the specialist Windows clients in my VM. An app would be great, I agree.

TeamTalk for Mac is mainly usable, but hardly accessible. You really have to
know what you are doing, but most things can be done. Many of these things are
extremely fiddly and slow to do due to the lack of accessibility, but if you
know your way round a server, a lot can be done. If you are an admin, or can't
be bothered with a lot of fiddling, then you need the Windows TeamTalk to be
honest. I've had many hours of fun with the Mac one though.

Re: Tips on Abbyy Fine Reader?

Html is good for receipts for example. You need to go to finder and find the
receipt you saved and open the html receipt from finder. Then you can usally
move like in a table up-down and left-right. This is through for most receipts,
but not all. Something with the paper and print maybe.

Take care

press the scan button, do my scanning either one or multi-page, and then
 press the finish button.
At first I got a little confused by the initial once-over scan, thinking it
was the scan, but in fact, its just an initial pass that sets up the scan I
 think.

This is getting to be a ramble, but the point is, the first pass of the
scanner doesn't actually scan, you have to then press the scan button to
 start the scan process.
The two scan passes are different in their speed and sound as well, the
once-over is fast, and the actual scan passes are a bit slower.

Hope that didn't muddy the waters too much.

FR Pro works great and this is just an oddity I noticed when I first used it.

It has a copy of NFBTrans seemingly compiled for OSX. NFBTrans is a

do use this program, but not on the Mac, so am unsure of the ability

Re: Topic: reading brf files on the mac

2014-04-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
If you convert a file to html, louis will convert it to brf. That makes sense,
since the markup is text as well. Going the other way is a little more
problematic. Half the time Louis interprets braille italics as dots 4-6 in
computer braille, putting a period before each word instead.

Personally, even with programs such as Kurzweil, I always found back
translation to be less than desirable. There are too many variables, and
sometimes there are strange results with it. Saying this as primarily a braille
reader, there are very many more books available in audio and other formats
than in Braille. In my personal experience, I've started keeping brf files in
their format and using a Braille display to type in them, rather than
back-translating. Of course, I have the luxury of having a braille display.

Re: Viewing Recognized Text in Fine Reader?

2014-04-17 Thread Phil Halton
I use a compatible scanner, there are lots of them, and after scanning, FR Pro
recognizes the scanned pages and then opens a save dialog. I save the pages
using the default file name untitled, and then the document opens in textedit
where I can read the doc. I have the format set to RTF and that triggers
Textedit as the default app. I suppose if i set the format to .docx, it would
open in pages.

There is no viewing facility in FR Pro, but quickly saving it in a throw-away
file will open it in an app were you can view/edit the file.

 Hi Alex,

I'm not sure you can view text of a document you have just scanned in
 FineReader.

The way I use this app is as follows:

I either add new pages via the add new pages dialogue - there's a button
there, or better still, I vo+shift+m on the name of the scanned file and
choose open with FineReader. I guess I do this because I use Vuescan to
scan my documents first and use FineReader for recognition only as my
scanner is not compatible with FineReader.
 2. After FineReader has recognised the document, in the toolbar I find the
button export all pages. A dialogue appears which gives me a choice of the
various file extensions I can choose from. Remember that the last extension
 used will already be highlighted.
 3. If I want .rtf, for example, I vo + arrow keys to it, and then route my
mouse cursor to vo and perform a click with vo+shift+spacebar to choose the
 extension.
 4. I jump to the very right of the screen where you will find next button.
This will now actually create a file for you which you will be able to read.
 Press this button
 5. A dialogue will open up with untitled file and extension. Call it what
you wish, and save it where you want.
 6. After you press the save button, the file will open in the appropriate
application for the file extension you have chosen.

I don't know of any other way of reading what you have scanned, not in
 FineReader itself.

Caution: if you want to scan another document without simply appending it to
the one you've previously scanned, you need to choose a new task by pressing
new task button in the toolbar - I think there's a shortcut key under file'
menu. Otherwise, your new scan will be attached to the end of the previous
one. I've learnt by mistakes about this.

I'm sure there's much more about FineReader that others know more about
Hope somebody will comment if I'm wrong in what I've said.

 Best wishes

 Andrew .

Pages improvement

2014-04-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

The latest update to Pages brought a big improvement. There is no longer any
need to interact with the Paragraph styles button to hear the name of the
style. This means that we can now set a hotspot on that button and consult it
from within the document. Also, we can find the short cut for a given style by
interacting with the styles table and the short cut is shown beside the name.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Viewing Recognized Text in Fine Reader?

2014-04-17 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

I have been following this thread out of interest regarding Fine Reader Pro. I
have not yet purchased it, but I believe from all of the current posts and
other discussions in the past that this app for the Mac is the most friendly
user with voiceover. Would like to suggest a solution for wanting to quickly
scan an envelope, which I do and then use another scan and read on the PC side
to OCR an item that needs more attention. I use my iPhone and Text Detector app
to sort my mail. The other app on the iPhone would be Prizmo that doesn't save
the image if you rescan immediately. If the mail needs more attention, I use
the scan and read OCR on my PC, but you could interchange it by using your
scanner and Fine Reader Pro on the Mac side. JMO and an alternative. HTH.

Cheers,

 5. A dialogue will open up with untitled file and extension. Call it what
you wish, and save it where you want.
 6. After you press the save button, the file will open in the appropriate
application for the file extension you have chosen.

I don’t know of any other way of reading what you have scanned, not in
 FineReader itself.

Caution: if you want to scan another document without simply appending it
to the one you’ve previously scanned, you need to choose a new task by
pressing new task button in the toolbar - I think there’s a shortcut key
under “file’ menu. Otherwise, your new scan will be attached to the end of
the previous one. I’ve learnt by mistakes about this.

I’m sure there’s much more about FineReader that others know more about
Hope somebody will comment if I’m wrong in what I’ve said.

 Best wishes

 Andrew .

Re: Pages improvement

2014-04-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Isaac,

To set a hotspot, go to the place you want to put the hotspot and press
VO-Shift-plus a number from 0 to 9. To jump to the hotspot, press VO-number. To
consult the hotspot, press VO-Cmd-number.

So, in Pages, if you set a hotspot with the number 1, you can press VO-Cmd-1
anywhere within your text and hear the name of the paragraph style currently
active.

You can also jump straight to the Paragraph styles button by pressing VO-1 in
this case.

Cheers,

Also, on the Mac how do you delete dates? cmd delete did nothing and I can't

Re: Status Menus Are Gone

2014-04-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Don't rush to the reformat, that is a drastic and usually unnecessary task.
Try to do a repair permissions first. To do so...

* Go to the Finder.
* Press cmd-shift-u to open the Utilities folder.
* Navigate to the Disk Utility app and open it.
* From the table of disks, select your Macintosh HD.
* Stop Interacting with the table and select the First Aid tab.
* Navigate to the Repair Disk Permissions button and press it with VO-space.
* Wait patiently as it does its task.

Sometimes this needs performed more than once to fix most permission errors.
In some cases, you'll need to perform this from the Recovery Partition, but
I'll wait to see if this does the job first. By the way, what exactly happens
when you press the VO-m-m command? Is there an alert sound or simply takes you
somewhere but no Menu Extras are available.

Keynote Aglore!

2014-04-17 Thread Daniel Hawkins
Hello everyone!

Ok, I have been trying to learn how to make my own keynote slides. So far I am
getting the hang of it somewhat. But one of the biggest problem my friends told
me that the Body area is very very small print. I know how to make larger print
by cmd+, but they explained to me the square where the print is in is very
small.

What I want to do is have a title and in the middle of the slide to have some
lists. I was wondering how do you make it bigger?

Thanks!

Re: Viewing Recognized Text in Fine Reader?

2014-04-17 Thread Alex Hall
I have those iOS apps, but they are rather finicky and slow when all I want to
know is what an envelope or sheet of paper says. I suppose a scanning stand
would help, but if I already have a scanner and Mac, it seems an unnecessary
expense.

Having the file open automatically is helpful. Plus, so long as you name the
file the same thing each time, I guess it will keep overwriting the last one so
you don't end up with hundreds of files with random text in them. How do you
set this to RTF though? Or is it right in the Save dialog if you choose to
export to Word?
On Apr 17, 2014, at 10:01 AM, Phil Halton philh...@gmail.com wrote:

I use a compatible scanner, there are lots of them, and after scanning, FR
Pro recognizes the scanned pages and then opens a save dialog. I save the
pages using the default file name untitled, and then the document opens in
textedit where I can read the doc. I have the format set to RTF and that
triggers Textedit as the default app. I suppose if i set the format to .docx,
 it would open in pages.

There is no viewing facility in FR Pro, but quickly saving it in a throw-away
file will open it in an app were you can view/edit the file.

 3. If I want .rtf, for example, I vo + arrow keys to it, and then route my
mouse cursor to vo and perform a click with vo+shift+spacebar to choose the
 extension.
 4. I jump to the very right of the screen where you will find next
button. This will now actually create a file for you which you will be able
 to read.

Re: Calendar in Mavericks-creating an event that will recur once a month?

2014-04-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
hi,

You should be able to set events like that in within the Custom area of the
Repeat options. So, after activating the date/time link,

* choose Custom from the Repeat Every pop-up.
* Select Monthly.
* Select the On The radio button.
* Select the proper day, eg. Third and Tuesday.
* close the window.

Not sure why it wasn't working that way for Daniel. Regarding the deleting of
an event, when in Month view, you can navigate to the event then go up to the
Edit menu and choose Delete. I believe that in some other views, you are able
to use the Delete key and/or some other commands.

Later...

Re: Viewing Recognized Text in Fine Reader?

2014-04-17 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Alex.

The windows version of finereader has an option to view the text in word,
internet explorer, notepad or simply sent to clipboard., I would recommend
abbyy to implement this function in the mac version. How to write to abbyy is
the question. They are making good products, but their costumerservice is in my
opinion not the best, but maybe someone on the list has a better experience.

Best regards Annie.

 unnecessary expense.

Having the file open automatically is helpful. Plus, so long as you name the
file the same thing each time, I guess it will keep overwriting the last one
so you don't end up with hundreds of files with random text in them. How do
you set this to RTF though? Or is it right in the Save dialog if you choose
 to export to Word?

 3. If I want .rtf, for example, I vo + arrow keys to it, and then route my

 5. A dialogue will open up with untitled file and extension. Call it what

 6. After you press the save button, the file will open in the appropriate

Re: Putting messages into folders

2014-04-17 Thread Alex Hall
Make a new folder by going to the Mailbox menu, then New Folder. Place messages
there by optionally selecting them (or do it one at a time), right clicking
with vo-shift-m, then choose to move to or copy to and select the folder
from the submenu. Copy and paste may work, I don't know.

To sort automatically, either make a new smart mailbox and configure its rules,
or use your server. Gmail, iCloud, and other providers let you choose rules
from your account settings, so that all your devices have messages sorted the
same. The disadvantage to using local rules on your mac is that other
computers, web interfaces, and mobile devices will not necessarily reflect the
changes, so that messages neatly sorted on your Mac will all appear in your
inbox on your iPhone, for instance.

re:Topic: Topic: reading brf files on the mac

2014-04-17 Thread Eric Oyen
perhaps its time that those of us with braille note taker devices start
volunteering some time to getting new braille books submitted to the NLS. the
only really bad hitch I see with this is the copyright laws here in the US. If
that doesn't turn out to be an issue, then we can all participate in expanding
the current library of braille materials from its very low percentage to
something far better. My one reason for us doing this is: we need braille
literacy and there just isn't enough available materials to go around. The last
braille loaner I tried to get from the local talking book library was on
backorder for several months. This, among other reasons, is why we need to
expand the electronic library versions. Having those files available will mean
that one can simply get them printed through a local branch.

anyway, it would be nice to be able to read braille from any document around.

 * Select Monthly.
 * Select the On The radio button.
 * Select the proper day, eg. Third and Tuesday.
 * close the window.

Not sure why it wasn't working that way for Daniel. Regarding the deleting
of an event, when in Month view, you can navigate to the event then go up to
the Edit menu and choose Delete. I believe that in some other views, you are
able to use the Delete key and/or some other commands.

Re: Facebook is getting on my nerves.

2014-04-17 Thread Christina C.
One thousand and one reasons to delete your Facebook account. :) OK, here is
what I used to do. I have deleted my faceBook account. So, this is mostly off
of memory but it's the only way I could tolerate basic use of faceBook on my
iMac.

Go into Safari preferences.
Go to the Advanced tab.
Check the check box towards the bottom that says something like show Develop
menu in menu bar. I can't recall the exact words. :)
Then close preferences.
Go to the mobile site for your Facebook account.
Then go up to the safari menu via the VO plus M command and VO over to the
develop menu.
Activate this develop menu and go down to the User agent option. A sub menu
will open.
Go down to the fire fox windows and select this. Make sure it's firefox windows
and not Mac. The mobile Facebook site will reload.

You should be able to get around fairly easily. I will warn you that you will
often hear lots of gibberish but it is very easy to use faceBook this way. You
will not be able to do any advanced settings through the mobile faceBook site
but you will be able to read posts and make comments. It's not a perfect
solution but it was the only way I found bearable. :)

To quickly get to a particular spot I would hit my tab key as this would
quickly put me in the edit box for typing a Facebook update. Then I wouldVO
down the page past my notifications to read friends status updates. I also had
set up a web hot spot (can't remember the proper name) so that when my page
loaded the VO cursor was in the status update text box. This would not always
hold though for minor changes to the page. :)

As a side note, I just want to say that I use this develop menu often. If I
come across a website that seems really cluttered, I will try this develop menu
and instead of choosing the fire Fox windows option I use the Safari iOS iPhone
choice. This tricks the website into thinking you on an iPhone and will
sometimes display their mobile version. It doesn't always do the trick but
sometimes it's just the thing I need for easier navigation.

Feel free to ask me questions as I am not very good at explaining directions. :)

Best of luck and happy faceBooking,
Christina

Re: Keyboard Focus / Voice Over Cursor / Mouse Pointer

2014-04-17 Thread Robert C

Anne,
This is an old message but of interest. Specifically, the cursor
tracking when in a chat environment.

If tracking is off, keyboard fozus is on the edit field, and VO is
on the text the other person types, do you hear both spoken or do you
need to use commands? This is new to me and I wish to try a chat soon
with a friend.

Hello Lee,

The keyboard focus is the position of the insertion point, which is shown on
the screen as a tiny line between two characters. This is where your text will
start if you begin typing.
The VoiceOver cursor is shown as a box around an area on the screen and you can
change its size in the VoiceOver utility.
Normally the keyboard focus and the VoiceOver cursor are tied together so that
VoiceOver tells you where you can enter information, but in a chat, you want to
be able to read what the other person has written without moving the insertion
point from the field where you type your reply, so you turn cursor tracking off.

In general, we don't need to worry about the mouse cursor, but some operations
require the mouse to be on a specific element, in which case, you can bring the
mouse cursor to the VO cursor with VO-Cmd-F5 if you don't have the mouse cursor
tied to the other cursors already.
I prefer not to have my mouse cursor tied to the other cursors as I find it can
cause some irritating jumping around.

Mouse keys allows you to pilot the mouse using either the numpad or the letter
keys on the righthand side of the keyboard.

In VoiceOver utility, you can tell VO to speak the text under the mouse with no
delay so that you can hear where your mouse pointer is. Moving the mouse
pointer in this way can make some elements accessible which the VoiceOver
cursor can't reach.

Cheers,

Anne

 hi,

You should be able to set events like that in within the Custom area of the
Repeat options. So, after activating the date/time link,

 • choose Custom from the Repeat Every pop-up.
 • Select Monthly.
 • Select the “On The” radio button.
 • Select the proper day, eg. Third and Tuesday.
 • close the window.

Not sure why it wasn’t working that way for Daniel. Regarding the deleting of
an event, when in Month view, you can navigate to the event then go up to the
Edit menu and choose Delete. I believe that in some other views, you are able
to use the Delete key and/or some other commands.

 Anne Robertson a...@anarchie.org.uk Apr 17 04:27PM +0200

 Hello everyone,

The latest update to Pages brought a big improvement. There is no longer any
need to interact with the Paragraph styles button to hear the name of the
style. This means that we can now set a hotspot on that button and consult it
from within the document. Also, we can find the short cut for a given style
by interacting with the styles table and the short cut is shown beside the
 name.

 Cheers,

 Anne

How do you set up hotspots?

 Anne Robertson a...@anarchie.org.uk Apr 17 04:50PM +0200

 Hello Isaac,

To set a hotspot, go to the place you want to put the hotspot and press
VO-Shift-plus a number from 0 to 9. To jump to the hotspot, press VO-number.
To consult the hotspot, press VO-Cmd-number.

So, in Pages, if you set a hotspot with the number 1, you can press VO-Cmd-1
anywhere within your text and hear the name of the paragraph style currently
 active.

You can also jump straight to the Paragraph styles button by pressing VO-1 in
 this case.

 Cheers,

I use a compatible scanner, there are lots of them, and after scanning, FR

pages using the default file name “untitled”, and then the document opens in
textedit where I can read the doc. I have the format set to RTF and that

There is no viewing facility in FR Pro, but quickly saving it in a throw-away

2014-04-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

When you say that you were getting annoyed at how long it takes to get a date
down, what exactly did you mean. You can have the Calendar app automatically
place events on the proper date by pressing cmd-n to create the new event then
putting the date within that field. For example, Meeting with my Boss at 3:00
pm on Apr 30 will place that event exactly where you need it. The more
detailed info if it's recurring and such does seem to need manipulation though.

2014-04-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It appears to be an automatic thing when you have the Download in the
Background checkbox checked in the AppStore pane of System Preferences. I
believe that if you uncheck this box, those messages won't always come up.
Other than that, you could turn on Do Not Disturb in the Notification Centre
and those alerts wouldn't happen. Then again, no alerts would which maybe is
what you are hoping for.

Re: Status Menus Are Gone

2014-04-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hmmm. I wouldn't bother doing another repair after this, as some items just
don't seem to repair themselves. How about you try the following:

* Go to your Finder.
* Open your Macintosh HD
* Open the System folder.
* Open the Library folder
* Open the Core Services folder.
* Open the Battery item.

Now try accessing your Menu Extras again with VO-m-m and see if the Battery
Status menu is available. If it is, then do the same process to get some of
the other extras back onto the Status Menus. If that doesn't do it, let me
know.

 Hi,

Don't rush to the reformat, that is a drastic and usually unnecessary task.
Try to do a repair permissions first. To do so...

 * Go to the Finder.

By the way, what exactly
happens when you press the VO-m-m command? Is there an alert sound or
simply takes you somewhere but no Menu Extras are available.

I too have the same question. I tried setting to the second saturday every
month. It ended up on doing the same date number, not the second Saturday.

Also, on the Mac how do you delete dates? cmd delete did nothing and I can't
 find anything under the menubar.

 hi,

You should be able to set events like that in within the Custom area of the
Repeat options. So, after activating the date/time link,

 * choose Custom from the Repeat Every pop-up.
 * Select Monthly.
 * Select the On The radio button.
 * Select the proper day, eg. Third and Tuesday.
 * close the window.

Not sure why it wasn't working that way for Daniel. Regarding the deleting
of an event, when in Month view, you can navigate to the event then go up to
the Edit menu and choose Delete. I believe that in some other views, you are
able to use the Delete key and/or some other commands.

 Later...

  Pages improvement
 Anne Robertson a...@anarchie.org.uk Apr 17 04:27PM +0200

 Hello everyone,

The latest update to Pages brought a big improvement. There is no longer any
need to interact with the Paragraph styles button to hear the name of the
style. This means that we can now set a hotspot on that button and consult
it from within the document. Also, we can find the short cut for a given
style by interacting with the styles table and the short cut is shown beside
 the name.

 Cheers,

So, in Pages, if you set a hotspot with the number 1, you can press VO-Cmd-1
anywhere within your text and hear the name of the paragraph style currently
 active.

You can also jump straight to the Paragraph styles button by pressing VO-1
 in this case.

 Cheers,

 Anne

Viewing Recognized Text in Fine Reader?
 Phil Halton philh...@gmail.com Apr 17 10:01AM -0400

I use a compatible scanner, there are lots of them, and after scanning, FR
Pro recognizes the scanned pages and then opens a save dialog. I save the
pages using the default file name untitled, and then the document opens in
textedit where I can read the doc. I have the format set to RTF and that
triggers Textedit as the default app. I suppose if i set the format to
.docx, it would open in pages.

There is no viewing facility in FR Pro, but quickly saving it in a
throw-away file will open it in an app were you can view/edit the file.

I need to remove drm protection from an adobe digital pdf book which I have

Thanks for any tips.

Re: Facebook is getting on my nerves.

Wow; this is the best bunch of suggestions I've seen for dealing with Facebook
and difficult sites. Terrific.

One thousand and one reasons to delete your Facebook account. :) OK, here is
what I used to do. I have deleted my faceBook account. So, this is mostly
off of memory but it's the only way I could tolerate basic use of faceBook on
 my iMac.

Make sure it's firefox
windows and not Mac. The mobile Facebook site will reload.

You should be able to get around fairly easily. I will warn you that you will
often hear lots of gibberish but it is very easy to use faceBook this way.
You will not be able to do any advanced settings through the mobile faceBook
site but you will be able to read posts and make comments. It's not a perfect
solution but it was the only way I found bearable. :)

To quickly get to a particular spot I would hit my tab key as this would
quickly put me in the edit box for typing a Facebook update. Then I wouldVO
down the page past my notifications to read friends status updates. I also
had set up a web hot spot (can't remember the proper name) so that when my
page loaded the VO cursor was in the status update text box. This would not
always hold though for minor changes to the page. :)

As a side note, I just want to say that I use this develop menu often. If I
come across a website that seems really cluttered, I will try this develop
menu and instead of choosing the fire Fox windows option I use the Safari iOS
iPhone choice. This tricks the website into thinking you on an iPhone and
will sometimes display their mobile version. It doesn't always do the trick
but sometimes it's just the thing I need for easier navigation.

Feel free to ask me questions as I am not very good at explaining directions.
 :)

Best of luck and happy faceBooking,
 Christina

actually, that works in reverse, at the moment the Canadian dollar is less

If that doesn't turn out to be an issue, then we can all participate in
expanding the current library of braille materials from its very low
percentage to something far better. My one reason for us doing this is: we
need braille literacy and there just isn't enough available materials to go
around. The last braille loaner I tried to get from the local talking book
library was on backorder for several months. This, among other reasons, is
why we need to expand the electronic library versions. Having those files

anyway, it would be nice to be able to read braille from any document around.

If you convert a file to html, louis will convert it to brf. That makes
sense, since the markup is text as well.

Saying this as primarily a
braille reader, there are very many more books available in audio and other
formats than in Braille. In my personal experience, I've started keeping brf
files in their format and using a Braille display to type in them, rather
than back-translating. Of course, I have the luxury of having a braille
 display.

expanding the current library of braille materials from its very low
percentage to something far better. My one reason for us doing this is: we
need braille literacy and there just isn't enough available materials to go
around. The last braille loaner I tried to get from the local talking book
library was on backorder for several months. This, among other reasons, is
why we need to expand the electronic library versions. Having those files

 branch.

anyway, it would be nice to be able to read braille from any document around.

If you convert a file to html, louis will convert it to brf. That makes
sense, since the markup is text as well. Going the other way is a little
more problematic. Half the time Louis interprets braille italics as dots 4-6
in computer braille, putting a period before each word instead.

Personally, even with programs such as Kurzweil, I always found back
translation to be less than desirable. There are too many variables, and
sometimes there are strange results with it. Saying this as primarily a
braille reader, there are very many more books available in audio and other
formats than in Braille. In my personal experience, I've started keeping brf
files in their format and using a Braille display to type in them, rather
than back-translating. Of course, I have the luxury of having a braille
 display.

Re: Pages improvement

2014-04-17 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Ann,

That's great news about the hotspots and I have been getting a lot of use out
of the latest Pages. Setting shortcuts for paragraph styles is so much easier
now too.

However, the update to the paragraph styles button is a bit of a double edged
sword. It seems to always display the same paragraph style even when you change
it. As I import many documents from Word, these usually start off saying,
Normal. But even when I change the paragraph style to something like Body
or Heading the paragraph styles button continues to say Normal. It is not
until I interact with the paragraph styles button that VoiceOver will read the
correct paragraph style name.

This leaves the misreported keyboard cursor point and the problem with
selecting text which wraps a page as the main bugs outstanding. Then if they
could bring back merged fields we'd be laughing. Is there much else I'm
forgetting?

Re: Calendar in Mavericks-creating an event that will recur once a month?

2014-04-17 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Re deleting events in month view, I've found that VoiceOver has some problems
with focus. Keyboard focus and VoiceOver focus seem to get separated, and this
results in either not being able to delete an event or deleting the wrong one.
I've been able to eventually fix this by using just the arrow keys to navigate
around, rather than the VoiceOver keys.

Hi,

That should be the one. It's starting to look like you may need to do a
re-install. I wouldn't go the total clean install route yet. You could try
the Re-install option in the Recovery partition. This would install the
newest MacOS onto your system, hopefully fixing any issues that exist. A good
backup is preferred prior to attempting this but it is quicker and less
problematic than a clean install. I think it's worth a try for you.

The latest update to Pages brought a big improvement. There is no longer

consult it from within the document. Also, we can find the short cut for a

Hotspots and Web Spots in Safari

2014-04-17 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I am working on a Safari article for new Mac users, and I thought I'd cover
hotspots and web spots. Now, though, I don't know if I should. Here's what i
did to try out hotspots:

1. I went to an open page in Safari, navigated to a heading partway down it,
and pressed vo-shift-1.
2. I hit vo-left a few times, then vo-1, and was taken to my spot. Great.
3. I moved to the top of the page, tabbed a couple times, and hit vo-1. Nothing
at all happened.
4. I pressed vo-1 again, chose my spot from the Hotspots menu, and nothing
happened.
5. I hit vo-cmd-1, and was told the hotspot no longer exists.

Did I do it wrong? I try hotspots every so often, and each time I remember why
I never use them... I'd love to know I'm wrong and that they work great, but
they seem like a broken and neglected feature to me. Thanks for any input.

I did try Web Spots, and they didn't break immediately. However, I really like
that hotspots are associated with numbers; web spots require you to move
through a list sequentially, right? Are there major problems with web spots as
well, or do they work reliably?

Re: Status Menus Are Gone

2014-04-17 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Jane,

Out of curiosity, have you checked your cursor tracking settings? It sounds
like your VO cursor might be routed to your mouse pointer.

This is just a guess but it might be worth a look before you go the route of a
reinstall.

Re: Hotspots and Web Spots in Safari

2014-04-17 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Alex,

I believe you may be seeing an issue where the heading you marked is no longer
visible.

When a hotspot moves out of the visible screen area or somehow becomes
invisible, VoiceOver can no longer move to it.

So no, hotspots are not broken. One just needs to understand that these are
based on visual screen layout. Arguably this may not be the best or easiest
approach for the average blind / visually impaired user, but this is what we
have for the moment.

Perhaps a spoken message letting the user know that the particular hotspot has
moved out of visual range may be in order.

Hope this helps and have a great night!

Smiles,

Cara :)

Re: Pages improvement

2014-04-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Nic,

Once you're in your document, does consulting the hotspot on the paragraph
styles button give you correct information? For me it does. However, there are
many fields that don't display a change until you've moved away from them, and
the paragraph styles button seems to be one of them.

Another good thing is that the hotspots remain associated with the particular
document. I reopened a document I was playing with last night, and when I
consulted the hotspot on the paragraph styles button, it reported everything
correctly and I didn't have to reset the hotspot.

Apart from merge fields, the other big improvement or correction I'm also
waiting for, is correct reporting of the position of the insertion point. I'm
glad to say that more and more people are getting annoyed about this and
reporting back to Apple.

Another outstanding bug is the messy way we have to set tab stops.

Cheers,

Anne

 Hi Ann,

However, the update to the paragraph styles button is a bit of a double edged
sword. It seems to always display the same paragraph style even when you
change it. As I import many documents from Word, these usually start off
saying, Normal. But even when I change the paragraph style to something
like Body or Heading the paragraph styles button continues to say
Normal. It is not until I interact with the paragraph styles button that
VoiceOver will read the correct paragraph style name.

This leaves the misreported keyboard cursor point and the problem with
selecting text which wraps a page as the main bugs outstanding. Then if they
could bring back merged fields we'd be laughing. Is there much else I'm
 forgetting?

The VoiceOver cursor is shown as a box around an area on the screen and you

Normally the keyboard focus and the VoiceOver cursor are tied together so
that VoiceOver tells you where you can enter information, but in a chat, you
want to be able to read what the other person has written without moving the
insertion point from the field where you type your reply, so you turn cursor
 tracking off.

In general, we don't need to worry about the mouse cursor, but some
operations require the mouse to be on a specific element, in which case, you
can bring the mouse cursor to the VO cursor with VO-Cmd-F5 if you don't have
the mouse cursor tied to the other cursors already.
I prefer not to have my mouse cursor tied to the other cursors as I find it
can cause some irritating jumping around.

Mouse keys allows you to pilot the mouse using either the numpad or the
letter keys on the righthand side of the keyboard.

In VoiceOver utility, you can tell VO to speak the text under the mouse with
no delay so that you can hear where your mouse pointer is. Moving the mouse
pointer in this way can make some elements accessible which the VoiceOver
 cursor can't reach.

Re: Status Menus Are Gone

2014-04-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

That's a good idea Cara. I've seen that happen in the past when I've forgot to
turn cursor tracking back on with VO-shift-f3 after doing whatever. It did
cause these sorts of frustrations that didn't seem logical. Certainly worth a
try.

 Hi Jane,

Out of curiosity, have you checked your cursor tracking settings? It sounds
like your VO cursor might be routed to your mouse pointer.

This is just a guess but it might be worth a look before you go the route of
 a reinstall.

 Hi,

That should be the one. It's starting to look like you may need to do a
re-install. I wouldn't go the total clean install route yet. You could try
the Re-install option in the Recovery partition. This would install the
newest MacOS onto your system, hopefully fixing any issues that exist. A
good backup is preferred prior to attempting this but it is quicker and less
problematic than a clean install. I think it's worth a try for you.

Let me know if you need assistance getting started with this if you choose
 to go this way.

Are you talking about the BAttery plugin under Menu Extras? It won't let me
open that. Or do I need to look elsewhere in the Core SErvices folder?

Hmmm. I wouldn't bother doing another repair after this, as some items
just don't seem to repair themselves. How about you try the following:

 * Go to your Finder.
 * Open your Macintosh HD
 * Open the System folder.
 * Open the Library folder
 * Open the Core Services folder.
 * Open the Battery item.

Now try accessing your Menu Extras again with VO-m-m and see if the
Battery Status menu is available. If it is, then do the same process to
get some of the other extras back onto the Status Menus. If that doesn't
 do it, let me know.

I am repairing permissions for the third tie now and I am down to one
permission that needs to be repaired. Interestingly, it has nothing to do
with Status menus. It has to do with Safari. I still can't access the
 extra menus, though.

 Hi,

Don't rush to the reformat, that is a drastic and usually unnecessary
task. Try to do a repair permissions first. To do so...

 * Go to the Finder.
 * Press cmd-shift-u to open the Utilities folder.
 * Navigate to the Disk Utility app and open it.
 * From the table of disks, select your Macintosh HD.
 * Stop Interacting with the table and select the First Aid tab.
 * Navigate to the Repair Disk Permissions button and press it with
 VO-space.
 * Wait patiently as it does its task.

Sometimes this needs performed more than once to fix most permission
errors. In some cases, you'll need to perform this from the Recovery
Partition, but I'll wait to see if this does the job first. By the way,
what exactly happens when you press the VO-m-m command? Is there an
alert sound or simply takes you somewhere but no Menu Extras are
 available.

Yep, I have tried with both. It doesn't work I bet I am going to have
to reformat and re-install once I have stuff backed up, *sigh*

Are you using VO-m twice or control-F8 to get to the status menus?
 This is not typical behavior.

 Hi there.
I tried both cycling VO off and on and a re-start of this computer.
It didn't make a difference. Any other thoughts?
